Bill you are watching the moments in Lower Manhattan. Also go to the Pentagon Momentarily and shanksville pennsylvania 15 mince from now. Eric shawn is at ground 0. He was there on that day and joins us again on this 9 11. Eric, good morning. Good morning, bill. You know, the soulful and somber reading of the names continuing now. With each name im reminded behind each burn there was a life, loved ones, family. You hear the tributes from the daughters, the granddaughters, nieces and nephews who in some cases pay tribute to the loved one who they never met because there is a new generation now of people, some who were not even alive on that day 22 years ago. As always, each year the officials, the Family Members and survivors have gathered here at what was called ground 0. Now is a site of tribute and remembrance and inspiration with these magnificent two footprints and water falls around which are etched in granite the names of all those who were killed here, nearly 3,000 names will be read including those not just who died on 9 11 this day, but in the 1993 attack at the World Trade Center, both victims all of radical islamic terrorism. Even though this country and the world has gone through the effects and the death of what that philosophy brings, the threat still does exist. We talked with new York City Police commissioner earlier this morning and he told us that despite that, yes, the country and the city are safer today than we were back on that day on 9 11. Right now a credible threat to work city. Even security from 9 11 or any event in New York City well make sure that we have resources out there. So there are a lot of things the public will see and a lot they wont see. Rest assured well keep New York City safe. The legacy of this day is not just what happened here and those who were lost but also those continuing to die from the effects of the toxic dust that they breathed either in the air in Lower Manhattan or on that pile. Just last week the new York Fire Department added 43 names of firefighters who have succumbed to illnesses related to 9 11 and their service down here at that time. 341 firefighters have succumbed to 9 11 related illness east. Shy of the 343 killed on that day. In terms of others, the citizens, 2,835 people have died of cancers, of lung diseases, of Digestive Diseases and other ailments brought by that toxic dust. That number is over the 2,753 who were actually killed here on that day. Among the officials, Vice President harris is here, Florida Governor ron desantis running for president invited by the Family Members Group of those who are here. Tonight the iconic tribute to light will light up the night sky evoking what was lost on those days and what has been lost, which we will never replace, that we will never forget what happened here. To our viewers if you come to new york please come visit the site. You have been here. See the museum. They have a display that shows the photos of many of the victims who died here, the people behind the names that we are hearing now, the human aspect of what happened here. Bill. Bill thank you, eric. Back with you momentarily there in Lower Manhattan. Eric shawn. Dana President Biden is en route to alaska. The first u. S. President to commemorate that tragic day away terre the white house or the sites of the attacks. Alexandria hoff is live at the white house. The president making his way back from an overseas trip. It will take quite some time. With each year there is greater concern about infamily fading. Two years ago he visited all three crash sites. Last year delivered remarks at the pentagon. This year is the first time a president is not on u. S. Soil as the names are read in New York City. Once in anchorage he will deliver marks and meet with 1,000 Service Members, responders and their families. He plans to honor the lives lost and the families and loved ones who still feel the pain of that terrible day. This is something he feels is very important to do. We can only imagine that heartbreak and the pain that the 9 11 families have felt every day for the past 22 years. But its unclear if the president will meet with anyone who was personally impacted or who lost loved ones in the September 11th attacks. Retired colonel lost his brother. Maybe President Biden being at a distance is for the best. Quite frankly, i prefer he stay away anyway. We will be spared one of his stories of how he can relate like he did with the people of lahaina. He can relate because of a kitchen fire that singed his pets whiskers. We can do without that. The president s absence, Vice President harris is attending the commemoration in New York City now. First Lady Jill Biden will lay a wreath at the at the pentagon and the first gentlemen is headed to shanksville and lay a wreath at the flight 93 memorial. Dana thank you. Bill as they continue to read the names in Lower Manhattan we want to bring in our colleague and friend of many years, karl rove. Good morning to you. You were in the thick of it 22 years ago on this tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001. Then President Bush was at an Elementary School in sarasota, florida. The focus was education. That was the moment andy card walked in and whispered in his ear and his presidency changed. It was three days later where he came down to ground 0, climbed on top of a all that steel and all the guys around him were yelling we cant hear you. Here is how the Exchange Went that day september 14th. I can hear you. [cheers and applause] i can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people [cheers and applause] and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon. [cheers and applause] [crowd chanting usa, usa, usa] bill that Gentlemen Left is bob beckwith, a firefighter who grew up in queens and became a Household Name after that. When you think about moments you cannot anticipate and how they not only changed the course of your presidency, but changed the course of World History, what do you recall from that week 22 years ago. First the moment we just saw was an accident. A white house advance person named nina bishop, the night before, had got in an argument with her colleagues. She felt when President Bush visited ground 0 he needed to speak and her colleagues disagreed. That morning she decided to make her voice heard by suggesting as the president arrived at ground 0, she literally came up to me and said they need to hear from him. She was absolutely right. I went to andy card, the chief of staff, and said they want to hear from him. He said where can he do it . I said he might be able to do it over there on top of a fire truck that had been collapsed by debris falling on top of it. Three guys standing on top of the truck. He said do we have a sound system . I said nina bishop is getting a bull horn. He talked to the president. Make sure the place is stable. I went over to the truck. Three guys are standing on top of it and i said jump up and down. They looked at me like i was a complete moron but they jumped up and down. And when they did, part of the wheel cover had a piece of debris on top of it and it jiggled. I went to move it and i cop said dont move that. There might be a Body Part Underneath and at that one of the three people on top of the truck jumped off the back and out of history. Two guys were left. I said stay there, wait. Somebody may need your help. The second person dropped off. One guy is left on top of that truck, rob beckwith. He is looking over the crowd not paying attention going on whats underneath him. A guy yells, give me a hand. He reaches down, grabs the hand, pulls the guy up and realizes its the president of the United States and sort of gets a little wobbly. He draped his arm over bob. Bob is trying to get out of there. The rest is history. The president with a bull horn didnt know how to operate it. Was talking into it. The crowd started yelling we cant hear you. No speech writer, no discussion in advance, no what is the right tone for the president to stick . The president said what he wanted to say. The crowd, you heard the response. Dana can karl, there were many opportunities for the president to speak to the nation. I printed one of the lines on a piece of paper and had it tacked up on my office wall when i worked at the white house with you and under the president. We will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail. And thinking of the heartache for some of these young people who are bravely reading names today. Names that might be even difficult to pronounce and talking about loved ones they never got to meet, it is still moving. I think the moment and us bringing it to everybody to look at today means we did mean it when we said never forget. Yeah. We cant forget. We cant forget that our country was attacked on that day. We must be vigilant. That threat to our country hasnt gone away. You are right. It is so poignant to hear people praise and describe the affection and love they have for a lost colleague or member of the family. And even just simply the names themselves. I found myself moved when i heard that name todd beaver. Remarkable family. Thats the guy who led the first attack the First Response to the attack on our country when he said lets roll. He and a group of patriots and heroes brought down flight 93 in shanksville, pennsylvania before it could be brought down on the u. S. Capitol or the white house or another important symbol of america. And, you know, it was unexpected when his name was called and i felt that pang of regret and loss. A moment of challenge and danger for our country when people like beamer steps forward. Bill thank you. Dana thank you for your reflections, karl. Bill back down to ground 0 in a moment. Several events moments of silence we should say that are forthcoming and we wont miss one of them. Stay with us as we move through this morning here on September 11th, 2023. Some other headlines were watching. This is an absolutely devastating earthquake in morocco. 2,000 confirmed dead. We will get you an update on latest to save lives. Dana were keeping an eye on Hurricane Lee how it is impacting the east coast as it returns to category 3. Bill as we reflect on September 11th and where we are today in World History and what has happened over the last two plus decades this is happening soon. Kim jong unwill meet with Vladimir Putin in russia. How soon that could happen and what the two will decide upon still to come. Still to come. Special olympics athletes with developmental needs. Dana 341 members of the fdny have died of illnesses related to ground 0 recovery. Equal number of those killed during the terror attacks. Lets bring in paul mauro. Audience might not realize where you started. You were an officer. Where were you on 9 11 and the days after . I worked in manhattan as a lot of cops did. By default thats why you were respond.
