across issues at home. she was head of the commonwealth including 16 realms also queen. >> the commonwealth was very important to the queen. didn't necessarily dominate her diary but she spent a lot of time meeting commonwealth leaders. >> she always regarded the commonwealth as important and significant and i think sometimes felt, you know, the political class didn't pay enough attention to it. >> well i've always thought that she had what i like call a composed compartmentally and when we think of prime ministers and number of foreign dignitaries she's introduced to. endless list. and that was her life. from 1952 onwards. >> i name this ship in britain may god bless her and all who sal in her. it was a never ending series of meetings, and engagements, ceremonies and tours -- garden parties and walk abouts. what one forgets with monarchs is they know about a year in advance everything they're going to be doing for the next 365 days. just imagine for the whole of your life always knowing exactly what you're going to do almost hour by hour right forward throughout the year. the queen just accepted that. >> it was always a joke that everywhere the queen went she thought place smelt of wet paint because it was for her to arrive so she knew everyone made a massive effort for her and she smile and wave and to be there back as a queen you couldn't really have an off day that included her clothes. everywhere she went, people expected her to look a certain way. nothing flashy, nothing that would be common -- something outfits hat, bags always similar so no one would talk about queen as fashion play and talk about her clothes -- >> i think the idea that she had to be dressed in a particular way is almost a double edge sword on the one hand, it is a constraint it is about saying i can only wear bright colors so people can see me and on the other hand it's a job it is part of her uniform and didn't dress that way when she wasn't in the public eye. as queen she had really affected her. the disaster whatted in the years following the births of the queen's two youngest children princess aron andrew and edward and demands on her time regularly took her away from her family. she would put the duty first before thinking of the children. i mean she -- on the children but if she had to go and do a reception or something then -- children missed out. >> we tried to judge the queen and duke's parents by the standards of the 21st century we're talking about -- you know, 50, 60, 0 years ago and by the standards of their time they were good, loving parents. as people, though, not touchy feely people. >> always a -- as far as i'm concerned this was a fantastic mother. she was always, always there. she was always always -- i know when i was growing up used to call extraordinary very good for the job used to have a map and follow where they went and traveled. those tours were one of the ways in which prince phillip supported his wife he played a crucial royal in her reign. something the queen disclosed in a speech to mark their golden wedding anniversary. but he has quite simply been my strength and stay all of these years. and i and his whole family and this and many other countries joe him a debt greater than he would ever claim and more than we shall ever know. it is important to understand about anyone -- the position and it doesn't come really big area or not the system than the monarch that they're a human being at the same time so they have their -- their periods of anxiety and worry and doubt, and lack of self-confidence, and important. >> i followed them on several trips and would be in the car behind theirs and they would get into the car at end of the day and midly the duke would begin to entertain the queen telling her amusing stories you would see her laughing, hem laughing -- they chatted they were good friends. she was far less formal than you would think. [laughter] she was always the queen and that was important to remember. but on the other hand, you know she would be -- could be extremely playful and funny and actually very good company. the queen was a very white person loved to geek and not take life too seriously and loved a laugh and kept private within her friends within her family. in front of the public queen was always composed. even when she was shot at during trooping the color in 1981. she controlled her horse and continued. that calmness was shown again the following year when an intruder michael pagen managed to get into the more -- complex issues that, you know, when you lose a love one can compare. so no she's been incredibly supportive and i've really appreciated her guidance. >> the queen did understand the strength of public feeling. but i think she genuinely at first found it difficult to know how to respond in the right way. it was a tradition that flags would only fly over palaces when the monarch was present. the public gathered outside buckingham palace and they look at the symbol of monarchy and there was a bear flagpole. the lack of a flag and queen absence provoked a storm of protest from the press and public. >> i think it must have been quite an unpleasant time to have to go out and as she did wanting to meet the crowd. and wondering really was it good reception? >> what we've been doing effectively. that evening queen made unprecedented live broadcast to the nation where she spoke about diana. she was an exceptional and gifted human being. in good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. i admired and respected her for her energy and commitment to others. and especially for her devotion to her two boys. >> the family did take some time to come back and not that that absolutely became republicans but many thought i don't care so much about royal family and not so interested they're not so relevant to my life. queen learned lessons demonstrated in 2002 when just months before golden jubilee celebrations princess margaret die that was followed just seven weeks later by the death of the queen mother. ♪ ♪ she realized that she had to be visible. that this difficult balance between private grief and public duty had to err on side of public duty the fact she gave a broadcast soon after the death of her mother was -- quite extraordinary. my family and i always knew what she meant for the people of this country. and the special place she occupied in the hearts of so many. ♪ ♪ was incredibly close to
