FOXNEWS Happening Now May 27, 2011

this explosion at this point. but haganese officials are saying they're not prepared to immediately make comment. we have had this plant in the news before, back in january, there was a worker who was killed on property here. we're watching this very closely to see what triggered this and hopefully get some pictures in to show you the scene, in gallatin, tennessee, the haganese metals powders plant, an explosion there, fox confirming at least five injuries, three of them serious enough to lifeflight them to a burn center. we will bring you more information as we learn it. jenna. jenna: >> skwro*b -- jon: good morning to you on this friday. i'm jon scott. len jenna: hi everybody, i'm jenna lee, obviously, a developing story out of tennessee and we're also watching the death toll that's climbing from the tornado in joplin, missouri. now hitting 132 today. meantime, a desperate search for the missing goes on. some who have survived the lethal tornado are turning up, their names are being crossed off the list of the unaccounted for, but of course, not all of the stories end so well. family members are looking any way they can, vowing to press on, until they find their relatives, dead or alive, jon. jon: casey stegall joins us live from op lin, missouri. casey. >> reporter: yeah jon, it breaks your heart when you drive around this area and you see the remnants of peoples' lives literally blown across fields. look at this, a recliner, hard telling where this came from, someone used to sit in this and rock in it in their living room. we are seeing the death toll rise and that's the grim reality, officials say the number could continue to go up because more than 100 people remain unaccounted for, and 89-year-old dorothy bell, her name is on that list, and i am standing in what we can only really presume was once her garage, because it's concrete, but then if you go up the steps here, you can go right into what we think was dorothy's kitchen, because you have a lot of canned goods and things like that spread around here. look at this, a can of coffee that is just sort of litter \dollars/{^ed} throughout here. dorothy, even though she was 89 years old, officials tell us that she volunteered at the regional medical center, right back there in the distance behind me. of course, that is the hospital that has made all of the headlines this week, where a number of people were killed and an awful lot of damage was done. i want my photographer to pan down, and you can see the carpeting here. we think that this was maybe dorothy's bedroom. but as we continue to widen out, you can see it's hard to make things out, because all four walls of dorothy's home are missing. and that really puts this into perspective. although there is no rhyme or reason to the damage we're seeing, because when you have such devastation around you, look at this, over here in the corner, this is dorothy's old singer sewing man that is still upright on this hard wood flooring. the governor of this state is remaining optimistic, saying this is still a search and recovery mission, there are still hopes of finding people alive underneath all of this rubble. but you can imagine, it is an arduous task, when you see how widespread the damage is. it goes some 6 miles behind our camera in that direction the same pictures, all the way around, no matter where you turn. so it is going to take days and days for those search and rescue dogs and the cadaver dogs to even get through all of the neighborhoods, neighborhoods, quite frankly, that have been wiped off of the map. jon: we can hear the chain saws in the background there, casey. what about the hospital? i know that they thought it was going to be weeks before it could reopen. any progress there? >> reporter: we're hearing that there could be a temporary hospital set up sometime this weekend, not far from where i am, and jon, you mentioned the chain saws, the photographer, go ahead and pan over there, you can see a man trying his best to clear away the debris, and this is going on all over the place. some 200 national guard troops are already on the ground, and yesterday, at a press conference, the governor says that even more national guard troops are going to be coming in to help. that is going to be the point agency for all of the debris clearance and some of these buildings will have to undergo demolition. but the hospital, again, jon, that you were talking about, just there in the background, and obviously, people cannot stay there. it is uninhabillable but we're hearing reports from locals on the ground that a temporary hospital is going to be set up in this area by the weekend, and a lot of fingers are crossed, as there is a lot of walking wounded in this region, as you can imagine. jon: i know america stands with joplin, as they try to clean up and rebuild. thank you very much, casey stegall. jenna: casey just mentioned the 200 national guard troops on the ground there and joining us on the phone is major tammy seitzer, with the missouri national guard, and major spicer, casey mentioned the possibility of a temporary hospital, can you tell us anything more about that? >> reporter: >> jenna, i can. the missouri national guard specifically has been constructing that hospital for a day. we traveled to bran son, where the hospital was located, deconstructed it, and we're putting it up in joplin, to help exactly with what was said, the city of joplin, we're standing with them, we're standing beside them and want to help them get through this crisis. jenna: how long before that temporary hospital can take people in? >> you know, the hospital staff itself will have to do a lot. as you can imagine, a hospital tent is a much more complicated apparatus than your typical tent that you might think of, so it takes about 2-3 solid days to set up the tent, and then the hospital has to get that tent equipped, so that when our joplin citizens come in, that they get the service they deserve. jenna: it is tough for us to imagine that type of work. it's incredible what you are able to do. we just announced to our viewers that 132, that is the new death toll for joplin. the list of missing was at 232. is there any updates to that list? >> you know, actually, as we seek -- as we speak, the department of public safety deputy director andrea sillers is updating everyone on the missing list. that is one of these very top priorities of governor jay nixon, is he wants that list to be at zero. make no mistake, we are going to find everyone that has been affected by 24age -- by this tragedy. jenna: i was reading some stories out of joplin, out of the local newspaper, and one of the things i didn't even think about is not having your driver's license, not having a license plate on a car, not having any sense of personal identification, because it literally was ripped away from you during the storm him how much of a challenge is it to have so many without the simplest forms of identification? >> you know, it's a tremendous task. yesterday i will tell you that jay nixon started that task off with a community resource meeting, about 3000 community members came to the missouri southern state university campus, where governor nixon had all of his state leaders, and every resource at the fingertips of the community. as a matter of fact, people could walk and sit down and walk out with a driver's license, and one woman said to the driver's license lady, you are a gift from god. so the smallest things we can offer them, a driver's license, is making such a big difference in helping them get through this recovery. jenna: thank you for sharing that, that story with us. it just proves just a little bit about how much was lost and how just the little items can mean so much. really quickly, major spicer, i understand you're overseeing the efforts at the damage on request the screen. you're working with army corps of engineers and local contractors but there's a question of how much money will be coming to the state of missouri to do the cleanup. so how do you tkpwreupblg the -- bridge the gap when you don't know how much funds are going to come in but you have so much work in front of you? >> really, the funding is not an issue for us. we are going to restore joplin. the funding will come from whatever sources that governor nixon mandates. and i can tell you that governor nixon has charged general danker with leading this cleanup effort and one of the pry ofrts will be really as much of the cleanup as possible, we want to do through local resources. meaning creating jobs. because when you look at all the destruction in joplin, it was businesses, and those are jobs, and so governor nixon and general danker, again, just another small way we can help the community and that's by providing them with jobs to get through this disaster. gen jen major tammy spicer, you joined us before and you're joining us again today. we appreciate your insight. you give us such a good idea, and some relief as well, some confidence in what's happening there. we look forward to having you back on again. thank you. >> thanks. jon: just getting those driver's licenses back, that's a great thing. extreme weather to tell but in louisiana as well, a tornado touching down in the town of bush, part of a powerful round of thunderstorms that ripped through. at least five people suffering minor injuries there. one was hospitalized. the tornado also causing serious damage to several homes. the national weather service says the twister packed winds up to 140 miles an hour. jenna: turning to north carolina now, severe thunderstorms ripping through charlotte late last night, forcing city officials to shut down the annual food line festival, organizers taking their chances now. they managed to get everyone attending the festival out of the area and no injuries were reported. this storm system is the same one that devastated missouri and parts of the midwest last week. jon: to detroit now, where the problem is massive flooding. take a look at this. more than 4 inches of rain, leaving roads and homes under water. the motor city not looking like a place fit for cars. state police warning drivers to be cautious if they try to travel a flooded street. forecasters say there has been more than 13 inches of rain in detroit, just this spring, almost double what's typical for this time of year. jenna: we certainly appreciate it when you send us your photos and you share your stories with us, and we've been getting some incredible images of what's been happening around this country and some of the weather you've been facing. karl sent us this photo from leachville, arkansas, strong winds knocked that tree right into his friend's house, he says this wasn't even the result of a tornado. luckily, though, nobody was hurt. but quite the damage there. dan sent in this photo from cedar valley, oklahoma. it's certainly going to take a lot, of course, to get that house back up and repaired. we know a lot of you are still facing some terrible weather from tornadoes to flooding. you can send us your photos, foxnews.com/you report. just remember, safety comes first. jon: well, emotions are running very high in florida, as casey anthony's future sister-in-law takes the witness stand in anthony 's murder trial. what she had to say that left both of them in tears. jenna: and an eye on 2012, where the gop's mitt romney and sarah palin stand with voters in the power play. and harris has something at our dot com monitor. the viewers are going to direct our destiny, if you will, by going to foxnews.com and voting for the story they'd most like to see and today, we have a trio of critter stories for you. and some interesting notes to go along with them. the first one is a look at a rare white kiwi bird. i want to know what a kiwi bird does. but if you'd like to see more about it, it has been born in one country and is a pretty big deal there. the next one is a pair of cheata cubs, and this one is kind of interesting because it's in japan, and a lot of people had wondered how those people would fare after the huge earthquake and tsunami there. this is a little more than meets the eye, just seeing the new cubs but also the story of survival there as well. and speaking of survival, oh my goodness, there is the twister dog! we saw so much heart eccoming out of the midsection of this country over the last few weeks with tornadoes and now a feel good story about a dog that makes it home. if you want to know more, click on the one you like best, we'll view the results and bring it to you on "happening now", and if it is happening now, you want to be with us. stay close. jon: let's talk about the race now for the republican presidential nomination. it's heating up. former massachusetts governor mitt romney, meeting with voters in the key early caucus state of iowa, right now. this is coming days before he is expected to officially announce his bid for the white house. chris stao*eurt walt is fox news digital politics editor and he is here with today's power play. no big surprise that mitt romney is going to get into the race. where does he stand right now chris? >> well, he stands, jon, at the front of the line, but with a great big target on his back, and the big challenge for mitt romney, as he's finding as he goes out to iowa, is that he's the man to beat in the field. that means that every republican is trying to hobble him on the way. and democrats already single him out as -- since he is the guy probably the president obama is least interested in facing, since he's a more moderate kind of republican, and might be able to compete in states like pennsylvania, better than more conservative candidates in the field, so he's taking incoming from all sides. it's a tough place to be. jon: that's for sure. what about sarah palin? she is a name that is constantly discussed as a possible entrance in this race, but she's been very coy to this point about her play. >> i tell you what, i think she's having a blast. all signs right now point to absolute confusion in the media world about what in the heck sarah palin is going to do. she's starting a bus tour that may take her through new hampshire, she's going to be in washington this weekend, riding with veteran s in rolling thunder tribute to america's war dead. everything she does illicits fascination, and if you juxtapose her with mitt romney, here's what you end up with. it's a lot easier to be outside than inside, once you're inside, you have to take stands on these issues and doing things, palin is having a ball and romney is sweating it out in iowa. things are more comfortable on her bus. jon skwraopbd things have coalesced now that donald trump is out, you've got mitch daniels out, you've got mike huckabee out. which of these candidates is enjoying the groundswell of support that comes with some of these other candidates out of the race? is it possible to break that down? >> the one person who we know is the winner is tim pawlenty. he's been in the race, he's been steady eddy, and he's been out there. he had a very successful role out this week, basically, on a truth telling tour, taking on sacred cows like ethanol, social security, and other things, and he got a second look from the conservative activists who were basically going to decide this election for the republicans. and i would say the tea party is having a good week in getting a second look that he needs very much to create momentum for his campaign. jon: cries stierwalt, thank you. if you like politics, get powered up each and every day with chris' power play, log on to fox news.coal, see the politics tab at the top of the page, click on it, it's right there for you. jenna: secretary of state hillary clinton making a surprise visit today to pakistan. why she's there, and what she's discussing. we'll take a closer look just ahead. also, federal agents slapping the cuffs on a little old lady, charging her with selling stuff online. you won't believe what she's accused of selling. find out, just ahead. jon: s. hillary clint kwrorpbgs making an unannounced visit to pakistan. she's there right now, looking to smooth things over after the killing of usama bin laden. the secretary joined by the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, admiral mike mullen, for this meeting with pakistan's leadership, the u.s. undoubtedly hoping for a renewed commitment from pakistan to try to defeat al-qaeda. here's more from secretary clinton. >> we will do our part, and we look to the government of pakistan to take decisive steps in the days ahead. joint action against al-qaeda and its affiliates will make pakistan, america and the world safer and more secure. jon: let's get analysis from peter brooks, former cia operations officer, and a senior fellow at heritage foundation. peter, what's the message of this trip? when the united states sends its top military officer and its top diplomat to pakistan, what are we saying? >> well, i think they're looking for an opportunity to improve the relationship. it's obviously been at near record lows recently in the aftermath of the usama bin laden raid. so they're hoping to get pakistan -- i mean, the relationship jon is at a critical juncture, so they're hope to go get pakistan to see things in a clear, sober sort of way, realize that considering the attacks last weekend in pakistan, at that naval base, that they are also threatened by al-qaeda, the taliban, and the ti -- hitani is thises at work. it's not just about the united states, it's about pakistan as well. jon: obviously, there have been calls in congress to cut the foreign aid that we send, the billions that we send to pakistan each year, there have been those that said that pakistan is not our friend, and we should just turn a cold shoulder to that country. clearly, the administration is trying to say to them, we want to be your partner, we want you on board. >> right. there's a lot at stake in this relationship. it's not a perfect partnership. it's a problematic partnership in many ways, but out of every crisis, out of every event such as the take down of usama bin laden comes an opportunity and i think that's why we sent these two senior people, the most senior people to meet with pakistani representatives since the raid, to try to put things back on track. i'm not sure how successful they're going to be but there are a lot of things debated. you mentioned that congress is talking about the aid, we have a fight in afghanistan, al-qaeda is turning up the heat, its deputy and other operatives are in pakistan, and then we have the hi complaint ani network fighting against us in afghanistan and may turn on the pakistani government as well. so there's a lot of stake -- at stake for both of us and beyond the region as well. jon: so clearly the administration has decided that it's better to deal with the leadership of pakistan, as we find it, and try to get them on board, whether kicking or screaming or however we need to do it to try to get them on board with what we're hoping for. >> there aren't too many other good choices, jon. unfortunately, like i said, we need pakistan in this fight, we need them to understand exactly what's at stake for them and for us and for others, and we need them to take the actions to press the offensive in places like north waziristan against the taliban and hikani network and others. there's also a desire to bring pakistan back into the western fold, the chinese have been there for a long time, chinese and pakistanis are good friends. there was a report about pakistan going to afghanistan, saying throw the americans over the side, we'll be your ally and bring in the chinese. there's a lot of things in that part of the world and in the united states and it's important to pay attention to it. jon: we're looking at the bin laden compound, the pakistanis very upset we didn't give t
