yesterday's job report came as a pleasant surprise for the biden administration. expectations were low given omicron-related job absences. take a listen. >> as a result, the month's jobs report may show job losses in large part because workers were out sick from omicron. >> reporter: well, instead, the labor department revealed 467,000 jobs were added last month, the largest gains found this leisure and hospitality showing a return to social activities despite the ongoing pandemic. the president credits the rebound to the resilience and grit of the american people. >> our country is taking everything that covid has thrown at us, and we've come back stronger. i'm pleased to report this morning, and many of you already know, that america's job machine is going stronger than ever, opportunity for hard working men and women all across this country. america is back to work. >> reporter: while the report also showed wages climbed 5.7% in january, those gains have been canceled out by raising overall costs. rnc chairwoman ronna mcdaniel said, quote: hard working americans are facing decreasing real wages and spiking gas prices, but joe biden doesn't care. republican governors and legislatures will comet to reject biden -- continue to reject biden's disastrous agenda and support america's small businesses, families and workers. democrats want to see the build back better agenda return to the table hoping to see a deal on the $1.75 trillion social spending plan by the end of the month but, again, inflation is still high, the national debt even hire. those are precisely the reasons why senator joe manchin said he would not vote for that plan back in december. david? david: exactly right. thank you very much for that report. well, more companies announcing price hikes this week that really could change the way you shop and what you sip. fox business' lauren simonetti on all the spikes you're soon going to be seeing. lauren: starbucks says it's increasing prices perhaps several times this year on top of an increase in october and last month on what? well, that depends on where you live. consider this, their large venti coffee sets you back $2.45 last year, now it's nearly $3. amazon announcing a 17% increase in the price of prime. it will now cost subscribers $139 a year for fast shipping and ore perks -- other perks. this marks the first increase since 2018. and the items that amazon ships will cost more too. chlorox planning to raise prices on 85% of the products they sell by the end of june. chlorox sells cleaning items but also brita water filters, glad trash bags and hidden valley ranch. and they're not alone. kimberly-clark raised prices four times last year. add hershey, craft heinz, procter & gamble. tide and downey will cost more starting february 28th. and, david, we have a news alert. frontier airlines is not raising prices, but, rather, cutting the weight limit to checked bags to 40 pounds. so if your luggage weighs 41 pounds, you pay $50 for each direction. back to you. david: ouch. well, jobs and wages may be improving, but does it matter if prices keep rising? inflation still outpacing january wage growth. president biden still says the key to bringing costs down is for the government to spend more. does that make sense? here to discuss,s wheelhouse chief investment officer ann berry, former trump senior economic adviser steve moore, and former cam rah harris campaign adviser sarah norman -- kamala harris. ann, first to you. we're very happy that more people are working. thank goodness that's happening. and they're learning to leadership and work despite the covid pandemic, or maybe it's an epidemic now, but it's still with us. but inflation is still the skunk at the garden party. how much longer will it be that? >> it's going to be here for a little while, i think, david. and it's not simply the result of monetary policy. we've moved beyond that. just as lauren described, companies are announcing price increases not so much now because they need to, but because they can. if one of their competitors does it -- [inaudible] inflation will come under control, but pricing levels are higher even if the growth rate starts to come down. david:, and, steve, the president says spending many more money, yet we just had news we're now up to $30 trillion in terms of our debt load in the united states. can we afford to do that, and will it work, spending more to lower inflation? >> well, first, that was a blockbuster jobs report yesterday with those half million jobs, so i was really pleased to see that, david. one thing i really liked to see was more americans getting into the work force. as you know, we just haven't had enough americans working, so those were really reassuring signs. but you are exactly right, the inflation is the skunk at this garden party. and every indication right now that i'm looking at, david, is that inflation is not subsiding, it's not transitory. in fact, it's getting worse. you know, the oil price hit $90 a barrel. that's the equivalent of $5 a gallon at the gas pump. unless you live in california or new york where you might be paying $6 a gallon. i just filled up yesterday, paid $of -- $68. i usually pay about 45 for a fill-up. so this is a real problem, and you are exactly right, david. if you take, put more and more trillions of dollars of debt and spending and money printing into the economy, obviously that's going to make, that's going to be like pouring gasoline on a forest fire. so congress would be very smart to reject build back better. david: sarah, you know, you look at the polls, and i know they're polls, and the real poll is at election time. but the people, the polls say the people don't believe that president biden is doing ad good job on economic -- a good job on economic policies, particularly inflation. i believe he's 58% disapprove of the job he's doing on the economy. how do democrats turn that number around before the midterms? >> well, i think the really god news is now with this jobs economy we actually can focus on inflation. over the past two years, the fed has kept interest rates really low because they didn't want to hurt the growing economy. now that we have this great jobs report and a strong economy, they can start to lower those rates and inflation should in turn lower. and let's take a step back because there's another couple of things going on here. first off, i think we need to give credit back. every single metric that we use for economic success is up. we have historic job growth, historic wage growth, labor participation is up, so it wasn't the case that people were leaving the do economy concern the economy, it was that they were leaving bad jobs for better ones. we had some 20 million on unemployment to 2 million people in under two years. and that's because of the american rescue plan. and remember, not a single republican voted for the americans are cue plan -- david: but, sarah, i'm just going to repeat if i canned the question which is how -- if i canned, the american public don't buy it. they don't buy the president's suggest that the bbb plan will cost zero or lower inflation or somehow lower the debt. so how -- i mean, i just don't get how democrats are going to turn the public around on that. >> well, i think they're going to turn it around by a couple of things. one, we should talk about what that spend is focused on. so, for example, the u.s.-china competitiveness -- [laughter] competitiveness bill was just passed in the house. it includes billions to unsnarl supply chains, for the critical items like semiconductors and as well to revitalize domestic manufacturing. this makes us less reliant on foreign products and should hel- david: well, let me move over to ann again, if i could. i think sarah's correct in saying that the fed if will have more leeway to raise rates or at least to stop buying up those bonds. but what happens when the government spends money it doesn't have is the treasury issues these bonds, and the fed has been buying up most of them, printing money in order to buy them up. that's what's been causing inflation. if the fed stops buying those debt bonds, how -- who is going to be buy them, and won't that mean higher interest that could lead to stagflation? >> well, it's whether the fed is going to accommodate this fiscal outlet, build back better or some version of it goes through and we do see increased government spending of the mag any magnitude expected. jay powell, i think, has done a good job, he is going to have to make a decision on monetary discipline as much as possible and independently as possible from what's going on on the treasury side of the house. how can this message go out on this bill and the series of -- democrats are making -- [inaudible] from a historically low base. we're seeing recovery after devastation, and the message has got to be on product it. productivity. better roads, better infrastructure, better work force participation is still very low particularly among many minority groups. productivity and long-term growth have got to be the message -- david: well, steve, there's another message that you want to get out. you wrote about it this week in the "wall street journal" that one reason why the economy is still performing is because we still are the trump tax cuts. -- still have the trump tax cuts. we're operating under the trump tax system which gave a lot of incentives for growth even before the pandemic. i mean, we were doing extremely well. you suggest today that we should keep that in place because a lot of hose measures are going to be sunsetted. their going to be -- they're going to be going out very shortly. how is that possible with the current political discord in the country? >> well, exactly, david. and, you know, one of the things that really, i think, has propelled the stock market over the last six months because this has been, you know, a pretty strong market is the failure of this absurd -- by the way, it's not 1.25 trillion, it's $a -- $5 trillion that biden wants to spend. which is outrageous. one of the things that president biden wanted to do in that bill was reverse and repeal all of the tax cuts which had such a positive effect. we had the lowest poverty rate, the lowest unemployment rate, the biggest wage gains in something like 30 years. so i hope that a we do not see those tax cuts go away, but i just want to raise one other -- david: we don't have much time, very quickly. >> yeah. people -- if sarah, if the economy is good as sarah says it is, why is it only one out of three americans approve of the job that joe biden has done on the economy? putin, as callous an individual as he is, he might face some pushback from the russian people if casualties mount on the russian side. >> i mean, that's certainly a possibility although i, frankly, think those are very low numbers. i think the numbers in an actual war are very low because i think that the killing power and striking power is so much higher than anything that we've seen in an actual war in decades. it's much worse than anybody thinks. but i tell you, the focus for us should not be on their casualties, but on the potential cost to us. and that's why, look, no matter what we want to say, russia appears poised to strike here, and the one way we can probably deter them is not with sanctions or anything else, but with saying, hey, we're just going to take ukraine membership in nato off the table, we're going to put a moratorium on it because it is not in our interest to have ukraine in nato, and if that can prevent a war, that's ten times better than holding this tough position and having ukraine invaded, and i think we need to give serious consideration to that. david: a lot of military families, including my own, by the way with, get very nervous particularly after afghanistan at looking at troop movements and moving our own troops closer to where the fire's about to begin. is, is there anything any danger of u.s. troops being drawn into all of this? >> i agree and i would agree with that approach. what we were talking about earlier at the time of the peak pandemic, to use the example of florida where ron desantis against any reasonable public health care measure and now florida has the highest infection rates of-- >> but lower death rates than new york does. >> david, we just adjusted the numbers and florida has actually got a much lower death rate when you take into account the older population than most of the blue states do. florida did it exactly right. david: i'm sorry, sara, but we had to correct the record on that, it's about 10% lower death rate in florida from covid infections per capita than you have in blue states, but we have to leave it at that, gang. thank you for being here. thank you all for coming on. meanwhile, this year's global teacher award going to a u.s. citizen who came here poor and is now living the american dream. you'll meet her coming up and with the beijing olympic games kicking off yesterday our nation's top lawmakers warning our athletes not to use their right to free speech. i kid you not. we'll play the tape. e with no down payment. and they're holding the line on purchase loans with rates in the twos. already own a home and need cash? >> yeah, david, i think it's important to focus on the energy sanctions and i'm hopeful that we can get a package of sanctions, including on nord stream two, but i think the broader picture is this. we need to recognize we're in a new era, it's the era of authoritarian aggression with china and russia they believe they can crush and invade their neighbors, their democratic neighbors and i warned after the afghanistan withdrawal fiasco that these authoritarian countries would be testing us and we're seeing that now in ukraine, and we're seeing that almost daily in the south china sea in taiwan, and i don't think this administration is doing enough to show strength. and i think that's a key issue. nord stream is just one issue, but there's a number of other ones with the signal that the biden administration is showing is weakness and that's not going to work in this new era of authoritarian aggression. david: but senator sullivan, a lot of us who have got family in the military are frankly worried about how deeply the united states should get involved after what happened in afghanistan. if we're going to say, we just heard the democratic congressman criticize the president's rhetoric on ukraine-russia. so are you concerned that we have the right leadership in place to carry out a more aggressive plan against russia?
