be able to call themselves america's top ranger their burning training brigade conducts transformational training to create the world's most elite soldiers. throughout the 61 days of ranger school they push their body and minds well past exhaustion. that they can thrive in any combat situation. the course forces them in realistic tactical under intense levels of mental and physical stress those will have mastered the tactics of dismounted infantry, airborne, airmobile and amphibious operation. then they returned to their units throughout the armed forces in the army to pass on the critical skills. lieutenant general was the airborne and ranger training brigade from 1971 to 1973. he wanted to continually challenge the ranger in the ranger body. he directed competition to see who were the best ranges of all. all about training is about to be put to the test sunsets over fort benning, 102 shoulders are. for the most demanding more from three days of their lives. before sunrise and 60s plus our battle will begin to determine america's top ranger. >> it is 5:30 a.m. it is called fort benning georgia at camp rogers u.s. army ranger in the best ranger competition for america top ranger about it. working to be covering every single angle. after the introduction the teams are called to the starting line, this is where it comes down to strategy, deciding whether to go up fast and hard or conserve energy and wait for the right time to make a move. the competition has begun as these 51 teams travel to and a half miles with no ordinary run as you can see down the road and rapid pace has really kicked off. there's a lot of excitement, but just like any race once the gun goes off. >> the two and half mile run in the ballistic vest is just the beginning of what is called the mass start workout, it starts and ends right here at the obstacle course bringing outside of the course, each team will find a workout pit where they will begin the why or the workout of the day. a brutal series are crossed the exercise. the next event the run swim run spans 3 miles, they will race against the clock to reach seven checkpoints marked on the designated route. >> we will go to 237 and then 33. it is just starting to peek out over the trees on this chilling spring morning, the ranges are required to put on a personal flotation device for safety and swim across victory pond. the coming of the field behind me not 50 feet at the bottom of the field nearly freezing cold waters, they keep going there is no moment or relaxation or no moment to rest. >> teams will ditch their flotation devices and head out for another sprint on foot until they reached their final grueling task at checkpoint seven each team member will carry their own 5-gallon water jug that they must transfer back to the starting line of the event. it's here team 37 takes the first big move of the day, any weighted movement we wanted to get to the 5-gallon jug in a good spot that we can take the lead we started to pull ahead with the weighted jug. >> they will end at the obstacle course, they have to rely on their hands and their arms which the 5-gallon jugs have not been kind to prehistorically is a significant event. we really wanted to pace ourselves in carrying those cans. >> we are at the mall the st, they are coming directly from victory pond to see the competitors coming up the hills coming up behind me. the course is one of the most humbling challenges, they will need to find the ultimate second wind in order to complete this beat. so i can actually get a grip. >> they start mall blasting with the pull-ups, these guys are coming from victory pond were there soaking wet and then they have to comply climb this rope, they are slippery and their arms are fatigued, i talked to the two winners from last year end they said it's not a matter of how fast they get the rope, it's a matter of them being able to do it. >> all of us have been to the school we know exactly what to expect. they have been holding the water can. it's not too hard but when you throw in the tires and you're cold that this point and also. the third task to conquer is a vertical love letter three points of contact for safety it can still continue and you must start over at the base. left to swing their legs over, entire bodies and come back down the other side they had back leading the pack after the day's fourth event, team 37th boyle and corson. thankfully we were able to get through in a pretty good time which again it builds our confidence into the next event. ammunition into rifles, started into the complex and buildings going through windows. we didn't expected to be the cans over the walls, they set us up a little bit. some lessons learned, keep moving keep moving. once they get over these walls you see another team coming through. >> it's pretty common, how you climb up a building, it can get kind of messy if you don't have the technique down. it as they make their way through the building around the fire and they get past that, the good to be ambushed and they don't know that, we had to move the cover and return fire. we knew we were gonna clear rooms and talk to each other the entire time and if it was engaging targets where we needed to go next. >> once they safely get through that and kill the enemy they have two casualties that have to take care of. they her headed toward the ranges. it is comprised of four shooting ranges between a mile into miles apart as part of the competition and there is no calling in uber on fort benning, it is a race. they must run with their teammate wayne about 65 pounds on their back. the first stop is holcomb were each competitor received an 85 round belt of ammunition for them to 49 machine gun. for the shoot. he explained how to shoot the texas star five minutes before we actually did it. if you want to hit the top target go to the right and hit that one. in the bottom right target would come up in the field, hit that in the last two targets would stay on the bottom and there plenty of time, it worked perfectly. one point to miles away on foot is the next range. six events into a four ranges complete, they are just getting started. in the brutal 64 hour competition. they're just giving 40 rounds of the qualification. we worked with the combat weapons team and they trained us on the infamous derby queen. if you know the ranger community, is an obstacle course and a great equalizer for the ranger candidates in the competitors here today. >> there are 24 obstacles to negotiate spread out over of a full mile mountain trails. some of the one that looked the easiest can trip you up the fastest. known as the eliminator, the mile-long course of ranger candidates strength and endurance. on the commanders go. >> five, four, three, two, one. teams must race down the hill and barrel over the first wall. >> the hill going down at full speed in your tired from all the events throughout the day, it's not a good time. every obstacle must be completed and the teams must stay together across the course, no team member can move forward until his buddy has completed the obstacle. some of the obstacles are thrown out the window the technique is thrown out the window new trying to navigate. >> you need grip strength and agility and teamwork. by myself i would not be able to get to the obstacle. >> of the team is not able to complete an obstacle there is a thirty second penalty. >> unfortunately they take one penalty the grip strength is already gone, trying to do the monkey bars they are far across in your that smoke from the day. >> they will remember the derby queen is not just an obstacle course, it is a five level climb. most obstacle courses are on flat ground, not this one. >> one of the toughest obstacle courses that the army has not just the severity but the terrain itself there is a lot of drawls and spurs in the climbing obstacle is in the middle. >> few events leaving all on the field looks like, more than this one each ranger will face a challenge that puts himself to the test included a long run up multiple steep hills to the final obstacle. >> this is the moment where these guys are probably going thank goodness this is almost over, this is the last obstacle on the course. it forward teams are coming down on the black hawk once they get over the cargo net they hit the ground and they can cross the finish line. >> the derby queen being the home field advantage coaching the next the unknown distance mark reclaimed the top four spots. in first and second is teams 33 and 37 moving in at their place, teams 36 staff argent goldsmith. and forth and rounding out the top time team 47 planter and flame koski. there you have it day original 52 teams will survive the second phase of the best ranger competition. those who make the cut will have another long day ahead of them. scaling up and repelling down the towers. reaching doors with explosives. rescuing severely injured soldiers while taking enemy fire. and firing multiple weapon systems while moving between ranges at high speed as they evacuate. plus they will spend queen they started out on the unknown distance night march while carrying 65 and 75 pounds on their back. it was a race but the rangers were not told how far they will be going. it turns out it was 19 miles that is on top of the more than 20 that they had already traveled throughout the day. some teams took closer to six hours to complete, the fastest team, team 37 did it in just about three and a half hours. nobody wants to finish a 15-mile or 19-mile race and at the end get caught, we told herself is pushing through. >> at the start of day two the 75th ranger regiment taken the top four spots team 33, 37, 36 and 35 with the majors from trade-off rounding out the top five. the most formidable obstacles by tower, one team member at a time will execute a crew sick climb up the tower. it's a means of using tension onto ropes to scale straight line rope above 55th tower to a mock helicopter. it involves group strength, momentum and physical fitness to get to the top. >> what were trying to do is use your body weight to secure yourself while using the other hand to move the second set of ropes up, went to get to the top of the tower you will slowly descend the rope. the first competitor cannot advance from the base of the tower until his partner hits the crash. once both rangers are done they moved to the cave in letter. once they clear the caving ladder the second competitor can began climbing both rangers will then descendent the fast rope, the teams will run to the respective rope corral, each competitor will tie i've military maps. time will and once both rangers have their hands on their helmets. up next the demolition lane and nobody loves demolition more than joey jones. of course that's were he standing by. >> were in the demo course this is the funnest part of the day the rangers will be a lot of fun, the purpose of this course we talk about explosive we think of things that are trying to hurt people but what the military does is using explosive they have to get into the building through the door and they don't have a key to the lock they will use forces to blow the door off, they will be graded and that they will be graded if they do that and the door gets blown off. >> the next station is the ranger first responder event or rfr this is a combat scenario where they must save the life of the severely injured soldier while taking enemy fire. first the rangers head downhill into a wooded area. >> first they have to return fire this is a simulated battlefield. once we had neutralized the spread we are a casualty in a down helicopter scenario a couple chest wounds and unconscious so no help from the casualty back i weighed 200 something pounds and we had to move him out. >> the smoke comes out as it is challenging to make sure that they are staying focused and putting them on this again. you have to transport them. >> it's not that difficult, when you add the additional stressors those kinds of things make these much more difficult. >> here's one of the teams of the casualties, then to prepare the casualty for the airlift. >> there are an array of time penalties and can be assessed to the team from one minute to minor and proper to the patient to ten minutes for critical harm to the patient, failing to treat an injury or missing equipment, speed is definitely preferred, so his attention to detail. the competitors are meticulously graded at the end of the event. here we are for the next event which will test accuracy and speed under stress as always. they will carry a letter with the casualty and they will move that litter to four different ranges, first rifle then pistol then shotgun then long gun. they will be evaluated based on how many targets they hit and there also told working as a team with maximum modality and maximum speed. >> day two is about to wrap up they still have to do something tonight. overall a great showcase of the different types of skills. >> the land navigation courses tonight apparently they will disorient and drop them off in the middle of nowhere. somebody was humbly done it is not just open grass and trees there are swamps and snakes in the swamps a lot is in store for the rangers. >> if you seen one there's a thousand they all look the same. you try to find your way at night. >> as we round the corner into a big night day three is still ahead. on day three of america's top rangers. the field is cut down again, only the top 16 teams remain after a long night. they start with two events a brutal obstacle course into a simulated battlefield, most new events at the ranger competition, they then head back to a familiar voc underbody of you water and end the 2022 best ranger competition with a bang. >> the vietnam war is one of the most understood periods day of the 2022 best ranger competition, after 48 hour straight the final surviving teams are set for a dramatic finish. overnight they endured an eight hour land navigation challenge that took them through to this morning the field has been cut again, 51 ranger teams, only the top 16 are back, who will become america's top ranger. >> flight was at the end of the tunnel and were almost done my partner and i said if we don't get this will never talk to each other again, the stakes are little bit higher and amines a little bit more. >> let's get day three started. >> this is it, they start the final day coming down one of the tallest repelled towers in the country. >> this is the time to vent into teams run at the same time. the looming power is intimidating as they gear up with the massive structure. there is no time to take in the view. a. over the edge even in active courage no margin for error when they take the drop of 90 feet. >> we got on and we went on the tower as fast as possible. >> the hearts pounding with adrenaline as they hit the obstacle course as fast as they can. with the resources at a low point, the competition offers no mercy in the warrior training is not letting them through without a fight. >> he needed agility and the communication was necessary and critical thickness, my hands were torn up, any obstacle anyone in the army had experienced it taxes you physically. >> the particular obstacle course is a steady uphill battle, each event is a little further up the large hill seemingly just out of reach. >> going up the hill is a little difficult in waking up the body once we got over that and broke the frost off the ropes it was difficult because the wrongs were frosted and a little bit slick. >> teams cannot move on to the next obstacle because both competitors have completed the previous one they only get two attempts at each obstacle, a three minute penalty is added to the final time. the clock will stop as the last team member crosses the finish line but it is just the beginning of this monumental final day. >> teams head out to the landing zone, each team must demonstrate the skill that they learned in ranger school. a 55-pound wrap that floats and keep your gear dry, this is another time to vent. it will fly them to victory hung. >> you're about to jump out of a helicopter it's exciting you have a adrenaline rush to fly over and look out the vast amount that you been covering for the last two days. the hero jumping from the black hawk into the water is a very high risk special operations skill, mastering this skill allows them to infiltrate and operate behind enemy lines without ever needing to land. >> you see them dropping out of the helicopter they did not have to start swimming, they come over to the next enforcement of this assessment. the combat water survival or see wsa is a challenge all inspiring rangers must complete on day one of the ranger assessment program or immediately sent back to their home unit. one team member will begin the crime of the 40-foot lotto and across a log walk crossing the beam the ranger crawls to the ranger, to catch the tab to drop to the water below. he climbs out, picks up a trolley and takes off running as fast as he can. as a passes the finish line he passes his partner, as the crowds sheer each must go to a stairclimbing run to the top. one of the best you are ever going to see. from there the rangers must run to the finish line. this is another time to vent. once it team member crosses the finish line the clock stops i struggle with tremors, double vision, brain fog and chronic pain. i picture myself being in this place and everything being out of reach. when you hear about a cure, it brings that hope back. it means to my kids that they get their mom back. and people would be saying, hey, remember ms? you know what that is? if no one would have to ever experience this, it would just change the world. (heartbeats) introducing icy hot pro. ice works fast... to freeze your pain and your doubt. heat makes it last. so you'll never sit this one out. new icy hot pro with 2 max-strength pain relievers. >> dropped a three it is still 75th ranger regiment dominated event. >> they are incredible athletes and incredible rangers and soldiers. on any given day they could beat us and we can beat them anything. >> team 33 has led to the entire day we will see if they can hang on the red cloud range were once again the rangers will be tested on the tactical and technical sufficiency of weapon systems. >> there is a reason the red cloud range is called the big bang range. the teams are firing weapon systems most of which the teams have little experiences with making the target difficult. what makes it even more challenging is a physicality in between each shooting stain station including ammo cans each competitor will have missiles to get the designated target. they will continue to bring the ammo cans to the middle station just fire 16-millimeter mortars. the final objective is the 50 caliber station they will clear, load and fire of various targets from 200 meters to 1200 meters. >> this is a huge moment for team 37 as they jumped in first place. the score at red cloud range, t37 is able to move faster and have more hits in the faster time than team 33, the teams are headed to the final one. the last event ahead of completing the ranger competition. >> any moment they will be lining up behind this line it marks the last part of this entire competition from here they will take off running towards the national infantry museum. >> the teams are brought in for one final briefing, usually by this time at a competition first place is all locked up, but this year it is almost a dead heat in the winners may not be decided until they crossed the finish line. the teams are off after three grueling nonstop days it is all down to the final 3-mile homestretch. this is it the combination of 33 events, 60 hours, 70 plus miles and we are eagerly awaiting those rangers he were heading across the finish line. they don't do with that based on the weight of the points from the red cloud range it's team 37 takes any of the top three spots on the final run they will be america's top ranger for 2022. if they finish anywhere from fourth to 16th place the title will go to team 33. team 33 crosses the finish line first. based on the point lead coming off of red range, team 37 third-place finish makes captain josh and ty boyle on the 75th ranger regiment america's top ranger for 2022 on behalf of fox nation voted on and it's been for abby and joey to have these cameras here. i want to think the national ranger association for make it happen the airborne ranger training brigade they put on a fantastic event, that's the best ranger competition and this is america's top ranger >> hello america i am mark and this is a special edition of life liberty and love in >> hello america this is mark levin this is a special edition of "life, liberty & levin". this is a story about "the new york times", aspects you don't know about. you have not heard about and you have not been taught about. i have been studying this for a long time
