>> they come visit all of the time, it was good, my plead year, they brought me food. >> that is the college experiencing. everything else about this is tougher. that is nice. >> what is it like on a day like 4th of july, you are wearing uniform of the country, you will be a second lieutenant, leading men and women potentially in combat. what does the 4th of july mean to you. >> a great day. a great day for me. you know really brings home what it means to serve, protects and defending our constitution. and on this day, you get in tune with that and understand the sacred role of a officer. >> the young man, understands, giving his life to embodying leadership characteristics we appreciate your service. >> we're proud of you. >> we still produce guys like this, i love it. the kind of guy you would want. potentially in a combat situation, you want dialed in. >> we have 4400. >> i love it, cadet thank you. >> my pleasure. >> joey jones out there in the crowd. he is joining us now. with a few more voices. >> i am here with a graduate much of west point from a few years ago, todd and dory, you came from. >> horse heads new york. >> you said you had a tradition of your own you did growing up there. >> i grew up in the southern adirondacks, my dad was in the navy, he had a pontoon boat, every 4th of july morning we would run through the campsites on the pontoon boat playing patriotic songs, and we had the red, white and blue. >> you were providing patriotism for that year, you come here, and you are a graduate, you had a solemn moment today. >> one of my classmates i was commanded with in germany passed away during the pandemic, there was a virtual funeral for him, i went by his gravesite, ed clemens class of 79, we talked to him. and said we were thinking about him, great to make some closure, a great guy, a great soldier, a great family guy, i was happy to do that today. >> the band coming in right behind us. we're really starting to feel it now. >> we will let them get by. you can feel the percussion of the drums, you are feeling it. >> this is great. second time we've been here. this is a great experience. >> it is. we'll send it back to them, thank you for sharing that. we'll see fireworks, we're ready. >> thank you joey. >> thank you, joey. >> look at that 1200 cadets, excited. kai said that is what they are, he said don't worry about them being tired. >> there are 1200 pleads, 1200 in freshman class, student body roughly 4,000, every congressman and senator can nominate one appointee to the u.s. military academy, its newest members are there. >> one week ago they probably had long hair, no idea how to march, here they are, a weekend of their training they get a brief respite to watch the fireworks and be reminded why they are wearing that uniform. we've been on campus all day, i have seen them in their different uniforms, the pt uniforms and drill uniforms, they are combat uniforms, probably the wet weather gear. >> stand tall and proud at-this-point. this is a lot of what audience comes in. >> i have been amazed. we talked about the rain, i am amazed how many people have stuck around, proud it be here, see them for a while. >> they will be peering out, is that my kid, they are dressed alike. how do i tell. >> we have seen cadets marching at 3:30 in morning and as sun goes down. >> coming up we talk to two men who embody honor by putting their lives on the line for america. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ welcome back to west point, we make our way toward the fireworks, we ask, what is honor? by definition, integrity, honesty and respect. when celebrating your nation's independence we correlate honor to men and women who dedicated their lives, the loyalty and selflessness extend beyond all expectations. >> we want to recognize and honor two americans who have done this, tim kennedy is a green beret and david bella villa awarded medal of honor. great to have you both, could not have anyone better, we ask that question, honor, code of west point, duty, honor country, david, when you think about what that means, not just to young cadets what do you reflect on. >> we look at western honor versus eastern philosophy honor two different things. you know we put so much emphasis on perception of how other people see us. and if you give me 20 men and women who believe inside, what motivates me is how i see myself. my own integrity, i am my own compass, i can do anything with 20 men and women who are committed like that if our honor is controlled by culture and society that is one thing, that honor has what to be inside you. >> tim. >> it is for me, being worthy to stand next to people i have been work watching these amazing cadets walk down 4th of july, i am remarkable how great our military . is worthy to fight with these men and women, am i good enough to be there with them. >> live worthy of sacrifices of so many have given before us, these cadets will soon be second lieutenant, you have served with officers, what advice would you give young incoming leaders in the army considering where we are as a country, culture and military. >> embrace your mco's and don't be afraid to fail, you will be screw up, embrace it. >> listen to your noncommission officer. >> trust but verify. your nco's could do you dirty, you want to do the right thing by them, amazing to be in a position of leadership and have opportunity and responsibility, it falls on your shoulders, that means you have you do not have to be the smartest one in the room, just listen to the smartest one in the room to have that humility to stand next to someone, say that say good idea or i was wrong. >> you have been combat, things i and our viewers cannot imagine. -- when 4th of july rolls around you think about what the nation represents, where does your heart and mind go. >> i think about john adams he wanted this day to be so over the top, he wanted it to be loud, in your face, he wanted china and russia and isis and al qaeda to say woe they are still here for their trip around the sun, we're not going quietly into the night. >> i love it, with top gun number one movie on the planet, your book off the charts, my book up there, i have been frustrated with our country at times but i have never been more proud of our country men, america is greatest country that ever existed on this planet, no question about this, reremind the world, we're the beacon of freedom. the lighto top of the hill. >> i am motivated there are a lot of hills here. >> i have a couple great ones, tim's back stars and stripes and david a book, house-to-house, two great patriots. >> we have another patriot out there joey jones talking with folks ahead of the fireworks, what do you got?
