the voter and trump would he back the nominee if not him? grudgingly he says yes. sound like no third party run. what a night it was and what a show we have for you this friday. "varney & company" is about to begin. ♪ >> it's friday morning and we are on 17,000 watch. we're almost there, not quite. we also have 242,000 new jobs reported for last month. a stronger performance, we'll get to the markets and the jobs report in a moment, but first this. >> donald trump has basically mocked everybody with personal attacks and done so with people sitting on the stage today. he's done so about people that are disabled, about every other candidate in the race, does anyone deserve to be attacked that way, it's donald trump. >> he referred to my hands, that they're small and something else must be small, i guarantee there is a he no problem. >> i don't think that people in the america are interested in a bunch of bickering school children, they're not interested in slogan, to make this campaign great. >> talking about issue, i've never tried to get into the kind of scrums we're seeing here on the stage and people say everywhere i go, you seem to be the adult on the stage. >> let me-- >> that's not what you said. >> donald, please, i know it's hard not to interrupt, but try. breathe, breathe, breathe. >> is this the debate you want playing out in the general election? >> there was a lot of that, insults were flying most of the night. donald trump was mostly the target. tammy bruce is here and so is ashley webster, did they put a glove on it, did they damage donald trump? >> i think a little bit. at the same time that cloud of romney was there. i'm feeling depressed today because it was embarrassing last night. i have great admiration for mr. cruz, mr. kasich is, you know, mr. rogers, you know. and mr. trump, i think, seemed to be a little bit nervous, he'd have a very long and hard day and marco rubio was marco rubio, suddenly become a reality tv show. we've got to elevate it beyond that and i don't think that mitt romney helped. i have great admiration for the romneys, i think what he did yesterday was juvenile, did not help and not a solution. stuart: have we had enough? >> yes, i think people said enough is enough. and i think that ted cruz were pretty well. and marco rubio, you were the someone that started insults. very, very juvenile. and john kasich, to the side, yes, mr. rogers should have had a cardigan on instead of a suit jacket. i don't know whether that helps him or not. yes, people say he's the grownup in the room, but it may represent everything that-- >> the world needs someone who is going to kick butt and take names. we don't need someone to be hugging it out. this is why we're looking for different sort of leader to make up for the last seven years. stuart: that's interesting. come in alice from the trump campaign. do you think he put a dent in it. >> it was clear with what we saw with two candidates talking about things that are not of interest to the american people and ted cruz, who is talking about very substantive usuals, case in point, one of the critical comments that he made in detroit, a beautiful, phenomenal city, decimated by left wing policies, economics policies that put this city into a bad situation, what ted cruz took was an opportunity to show what he's going to do to help towns like detroit and others across the country to improve the economy and create jobs and goes with doing away with burdensome government regulations and implementing the flat tax and doing away with obamacare and all the burdensome on americans. stuart: i take your point, alice, that didn't come across last night. it wasn't a substantive debate, even though your guy probably wanted that. what a lot of people are saying this morning is enough, you know, we've seen this so many times before, the entertainment factor, the insult factor is beginning to drag a little. i'm picking that reaction up, are you? >> i don't think the purpose of any of these debates and i don't believe you do, is to entertain. they're to educate the voters and having the best information on the contest between the candidates and ted does in each-- >> the entertainment factor did bring people in. no doubt about it. i'm saying it's run its course, time for something new. >> this is a map of the most searched candidate by state. i don't know whether you can see it or not, alice, but all 50 states, the most searched candidate was donald trump. he's flat-out dominated. your reaction to that? >> well, i'm not surprised, he's the one out there talking about things that are not on topic and maybe a little bit more salacious, i'm not going to go there, but we all know exactly what we're talking about when you say things like that, people will start googling you, but look, the fact of the matter is, these presidential debates to talk about substantive issues, ted cruz was the grownup in the room talking about substantive issues and also received great praise on-line and by journalists when he talked about abolishing the irs and his policies for the flat tax which help to increase jobs. stuart: the challenge from john kasich, he deliberately stayed out of the insult festival. >> this is the way ted has always operated, used these to show contrast and highlight, for example, donald trump's policies, that he has a lifetime of donating to liberal candidates and liberal causes and he has been on both sides of many issues so he has a lot of things to say on the stage because he needs to clarify both sides of each position, also, when it comes to immigration, he has said he's the one that brought this conversation to the table. now we understand there's a tape where he has told a reporter that what he's been saying on immigration is just policy talk and he's going to change his position if he were to be the nominee. that's extremely troubling and that's something he should release, put out there so the american people can understand exactly where he is on immigration. stuart: i guess we'll deal with kasich on another occasion. alice stewart, everyone, thanks for joining us, obviously, the fight continues. alice, thank you. >> thank you. stuart: look at this, please, mitt romney 24 hours after his attack on trump will join neil cavuto, noon eastern. we'll get a sneak preview of what they'll say at 11:30, that's a big interview. and i thought tammy bruce on the last interview. >> she never answered the question. stuart: she might not have heard. >> i immediately started hearing charlie brown's teacher. i adore ted cruz, he's my guy, there's a droning on, there's got to be excitement and understanding of the nature of what he is-- what's happening. he needs to make an adjustment. but this is the time to highlight how you're different. 242,000 new jobs added last month. i'm going to call that a fairly strong number. joining us from the labor chief of staff under george w. bush. you're the guy who always finds something wrong with an employment report under president obama. look, 242,000 new jobs. the real unemployment rate u-6 down. the participation right up. what's wrong with all of this? >> look, i think these are good trend lines, let's take this as a snapshot in time. seeing the u-6, the number of people in the work force is important. pew research released a report this week that was really fascinating in taking a look at those states with the employment to population ratio is still down below the 2007 levels. and of those states, there are 22 states where they are down. those 22 states account for over 237 electoral votes and just 2000 alone is 215 votes. when we're taking a look at the sense upon which people decide their career future, i think there's a sense out there that people are not finding the jobs that are full-time and meaningful and will have to see how next month and the next quarter goes if the trend continues. >> that's interesting, paul. are these states swing states? do they have a lot of electoral college votes? is that what you're saying? >> absolutely. the battle ground states like florida, tennessee and kentucky. to the west, new mexico, arizona, these states have statistically significant lower employment to population ratios than 2007. and that's why i think there's a resonance, both with bernie sanders and donald trump on issues focused on employment. that's why all the the candidates in addition to foreign policy are going to look at meaningful jobs-- >> well said, thank you. the rebound in the stock market is for real? that's an opinion. and within 17-k. 17,000, inside 17 points of the close. if you would have been watching varney, you would have known all of this. look at this, look at this, a solid gain for stocks when we open up business again in a half hour, not a bad way to start the week. let's see if this is the beginning of a solid rebound. dare we say solid rebound? a lot depends on oil talks now going on in tehran, yes? the iranians now have a say in our stock market? whoa. i am a shameless self-promoter, am i not? >> you are indeed, sir, you're very good at it. in this case, well done. >> and the optimism, this is why the stock market is going up. >> you think i move the market? >> you do, clearly. we have it on videotape. >> we'll show the market, and weekdays at 9:00 eastern, that's when we kick the show off. you've got to watch from the get go. >> i'm serious, your stocks, the nature of what happens in the morning. >> flattery works. >> it's true. >> and i'll take it any day of the week. >> got to have money, but-- >> and back to the debate, donald trump, he's taking a hard stand on terror, he's talking about water boarding and he's talking about killing the families of terrorists. ralph peters has some strong opinions on this one. you look at the middle east, they're chopping off heads. everhas a number.olicy but not every insurance company understands the life behind it. for those who've served and the families that have supported them, we offer our best service in return. usaa. we know what it means to serve. get an insurance quote and see why 92% of our members plan to stay for life. >> these animals over in the middle east that chop off heads, sitting around talking and seeing that we're having a hard problem with waterboarding, we should go for waterboarder and go tougher. if i say do it, they'll do it. that's what leadership is all about. stuart: that's donald trump last night. if i say do it, they'll do it. he says american generals get out there and kill the relatives of terrorists, they're going to do it. stuart: ralph peters is with us, i want you to hit this head on. would an american general obey that kind of order and what do you think about it? >> no, no, an american general, an american captain, an american sergeant wouldn't obey that kind of order. you know, donald trump knows nothing about our military, nothing about it. he's never served this country in any capacity. you know, as an army officer i took the oath all officers take. our oath isn't to a presidential administration, it's not to a monarch, our oath says we will support and defend the constitution of the united states. we are not obliged to and will not obey illegal orders and donald trump is talking about go i having illegal orders. no now. stuart: i hate to interrupt you, but look-- no, you enjoy it. stuart: during the second world war, we bombed japanese cities and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. curtis lamay, i believe, did it, was he winning-- >> what donald trump is talking about, purposely killing civilups. it could be an effective tactic, but it would demoralize our own militaries and the outcry would cost us our allies. there's a differents, a psychological difference, if a soldier shoots a civilian accidentally, it's a war crime. if a bomb kills hundreds of civilsions, that's an oops. and i'm for much, much more for use of aggressive air party, and that's different from purposely targeting civilians, we obey the geneva convention and the constitution, if trump is president, he'll be president, and not a dictator. stuart: i'm interrupting you again. he's establishing a position, he's talking, he's not going to do that. i've got a minute left i've got to move on to waterboarding. what do you say. >> personally, i have no trouble with waterboarding, but it's foolish to do it, it's about an image. if we start waterboarding and gets out the allies will wet their pants. i should say quietly other measures. most professional interrogators, guys i respect, usually feel that torture is counterproductive. not torture, but waterboarder is counterproductive. you have to be concerned about image and you do have to be concerned about the law. i'm all for killing our enemies, i'm not one for slaughtering the innocent. stuart: ralph peters tells us how he sees it. uninterrupted, mostly. >> stewart, you're selling wolf tickets. that's a military phrase, military. stuart: new evidence of the hillary e-mail scandal. the fbi wants to know if hillary shared passwords with staffers to secret information. that would be a crime. >> i'm the only one that beats hillary clinton, i have not started on hillary yet. >> i beat bill clinton by more than anybody. >> let me tell you something, ted, the last person that hillary clinton wants to face is donald trump. >> we must defeat hillary clinton. the microsoft cloud allows us to access information from anywhere. the microsoft cloud allows us to scale up. microsoft cloud changes our world dramatically. it wasn't too long ago it would take two weeks to sequence and analyze a genome. now, we can do a hundred per day. with the microsoft cloud we don't have to build server rooms. we have instant scale. the microsoft cloud is helping us to re-build and re-interpret our business. this cloud helps transform business. this is the microsoft cloud. perfect driving record. >>perfect. no tickets. no accidents... >>that is until one of you clips a food truck, ruining your perfect record. >>yup... now, you would think your insurance company would cut you some slack, right?
