Now what . Well, they certainly did. Now they dont want tople w have to pay a lot more in taxes than they expected. Gerri, there was a way in the beginning to avoid all this. That would have been to have a compromise, Health Insurance plan, health care plan. But obamacare is obamacare is purely a oneparty deal and they cant go to congress on this now because that is republicans. They dont want to bail out democrats. Gerri listen this particular law, i think there has been something near approaching 40 changes to it. Either extension of deadlines, tweaking the language, so many problems with this thing. Dr. Scott, to you, i know youve been following this so closely. How much money are we talking for American Families . Could be substantial. They want to extend Enrollment Period for people with a penalty for the being insured to get insured. This year penalties went up substantially. Could be 2 of your income or 1,000. Gerri you thought you were getting a refund. Not so lucky there. It will be get eaten up. Right. People will owe money back for subsidies. Some people who got subsidies, actually half the people who got subsidies, is the current estimate actually got more money what they were deserving based on income. They reported income. Got certain subsidy based on income, they earned up more money. They have to pay back more of those subsidies. That is another nasty surprise they get when they file tax return. Another extension the administration is trying to work out as well. Gerri h r block say there is as many as 4 Million People that owe back payments. I think there will be a big backlash on this fred, over the weekend, yet again, there was a big crash on the obamacare website, healthcare. Gov. More glitches. This time the fault of the irs. And then were going to delay some deadlines. Is this thing ever going to work right . Well, they have had two years to try it out and four years since obamacare was enacted. You think that would have been enough. But again, that it would be operating smoothly but no it is not operating smoothly at all. I suspect it never will. One of the reasons, they have to ask for extended period for people to sign up is, not enough people are signing up. They have to go to churches to recruit people to sign up. Gerri thats right. If they were signing up like crazy you wouldnt have to have extended periods. They knew about the problems. They didnt want to talk about them. I talked to someone in the white house two years ago, arent you worried about claw back, people will owe back subsidies. This is the response he senior person that is not on top 10 things of im most worried about with this law. They knew the problems would be coming. They didnt talk about them. Now theyre trying to find ways to extend deadlines. Gerri one of the big problems not giving enough attention that these plans cost way more expensive than private plans, plans offered by your own employer. Fred, to you, have you seen the numbers out that the obamacare plans are five times more expensive than when consumer pays when the employer buys plan . No, ive seen the numbers. They come from credible organization kaiser not exactly a big foe of obamacare by any means. Think theyre very, very credible. Another thing where obamacare is not what the people were told it would be. Here you wind up spending more and getting less. Gerri the story of our lives. Dr. Scott, to you, youve been studying these numbers extensively. We talked about how we didnt bend the cost curve. Are you surprised at these numbers are astonishing frankly. Im not surprised. They eliminated competition in the insurance market. You knew costs would go up. What is surprising how low quality they would be. Health plans have been saying they are medicare plus. I dont think anyone believed it. When you look at benefits in medicaid type plan, private Insurance Plus rates. Theyre expensive. Theyre shifting costs from older individuals to younger individuals. If youre in late 50s or early 60s, these plans might be better than what you could have brought previously but everyone else theyre more expensive. Gerri lower networks. Closed drug formularies which most people are unaccustomed to. If the drug is not on formulary mix, not only not covered, what you spend outofpocket doesnt count against maximums. The report says that the hackers were able to transfer money into their own accounts and even take over atm machines. Think about it. The report doesnt name any American Bank. Tonight the trade Group Representing u. S. Banks says, it is not aware of any members being affected. But it is still possible the banks were used to move the stolen money around the world. Whether it ends up being small dollars or big dollars the thing that is different about this they got into the back office. They typically pick on consumers and Small Businesses thinking that is where the defenses are lower but they managed to get into the back office. Watch employees learn the fraud controls and then take off with the money after they had studied the Bank Back Office operations. Gerri now initial reports describe Jpmorgan Chase as being sort of a victim in this involved in this. But they are denying it. However, it is entirely possible that they were unwittingly involved. Do you believe that . It is possible. What the cyber criminal syndicates usually do, they set up Bank Accounts all across the globe. These accounts can look legitimate, until of course stolen money is put into these accounts. So it is possible they may have opened up accounts at Jpmorgan Chase or other places where they actually siphoned off funds to move them overseas. Gerri theresa, do you i think the way this happened is superduper sophisticated . Or are they just using kinds of employing kind of tactics we hear about you will at time . Gerri, you bring up the great point. This is pretty old school. They did targeted emails, that spear phishing tactic, where they learn names of employees. Send them emails that look legitimate. Tricked them into clicking on attachments. The attachments were affected with malware that led them into the back office. You need to do training and thinking differently about these types of tactics as a business. Make sure your security patches are uptodate. Gerri that is great advice. You know we just dont think of banks as succumbing to this kind of thing. Normally as you said they attack entirely different groups, consumers, Small Businesses. Does this tell you there is a whole new wave of cyber criminality going on . Is it becoming more adventure rouse . They will get more emboldened by this the key we have to trust our Financial Transactions across the globe. So Something Like this is pretty stunning. We know that they have got away with it, primarily with russian banks but there is discussion it hit many banks across the globe. This should be one of those things banks across the globe sit down, share tactics and share Counter Measures and share that this doesnt happen again. You should monitor it obviously for any suspicious activity. If you have a commercial account, you are not protected under that act. If it is long term, his election is going to transcend everything. The fact that an africanamerican was elected president in a country that once had slavery whose Founding Fathers wrote all men are created equal even while they owned slaves authors of those great words, that in itself is going to transcend everything. I mean now it looks like his presidency is collapsing all around him. There is arrogance and hubris and mistakes but all of that will be washed away by that one central fact, in my humble opinion. Gerri you know, we talk a lot about what is going wrong internationally. When it comes to Foreign Policy. Do you think he will be remembered for ending an old war or starting a new one . No, i think all as i previously said, all of those details, he does not stand up well if it is all just on paper. One of the most damning statistics now is the study out of the university of california in berkeley that shows the poor got poorer and rich got richer under barack obama at a staggering rate. That is terrible legacy for a liberal president to have to carry out of his presidency and unintended consequence of his own policies. And so, Foreign Affairs the world, there is absolute chaos across africa, asia, the middle east. But when you talk about legacy of a president , i have liberal friends now who just love Ronald Reagan, and i think in 100 years, theyre going to be conservatives who arent going to say lay a glove on barack obama. They will make their argument another way without incurring the wrath of africanamericans. Gerri it is interesting what you say because i dont think the 1 ever had it so good as they have under barack obama. It is true. Gerri they have done incredibly well. And it is a shocking legacy really for the president , but you know he is a young man. It occurs to me will spend a whole heck of a lot of time repositioning everything as soon as he is out of office . You made a very very good point. I have argued that all along. I worked for these president s and studied these president s, had many in my own home. They spend their time in office trying to shape what is happening in world events. When they leave office they spend their time trying to shape what we think happened when they were in power. Gerri right. So he is a young man. His postpresidency will be something to behold. Whether he will be a Jesse Jackson on steroids and be on the board of directors of all these companies or an ngo that rifles bill clinton with billions of dollars raised he will be a factor long after he left the white house. Gerri doug, one of the big issues with the president that conservatives question is his ability to lead. He certainly seems like a terrific campaigner and boy can he read a prompter. When it comes to leadership, how well do you think he has done . Very poorly. Very poorly. There is no other way of explaining it than the hubris that comes to all men of power in every situation. There are sycophants in the white house. I got to tell you, i worked in the white house, they are nothing like the sycophants you experience in business. These are superb professionals and they must have got to him. For example, when he went to estonia, got all of his facts wrong. In front of the audience, it was embarassment, he talked about the battle over the tv tower in talon, when it happened in lithuania. It was embarassment. That is poor staff work. Poor staff work that kept him from going to paris. But when you have poor staff work, it is because you dont have people on your staff who will say, mr. President , you have got to go to paris. Who will speak up but rather instead they will feedback what he wants to hear. So, he is doing poorly right now. A csx train with 109 rail cars derailed in west virginia. At least one of the cars went into a nearby river, and one car ran into a house before bursting into flames. At least one person was injured. Labor secretary tom perez will meet with both sides in a dispute that has led to a partial shutdown of ports along the west coast tomorrow. Automakers are looming of car shortages if the dispute continues. And Lance Armstrong must pay sca promotions 10 million for lying under oath about doping. In the court filing, the Company States that armstrong has already indicated he will refuse to pay the money. And the faa is proposing new rules for commercial drones. The rules would require that operators must see the drones at all times and prohibits them from flying their drone over people. This will ground amazons plans for drone use for deliveries. The company says it remains committed to its vision. And those are some of the other stories in the news tonight. Okay, a month into tax season, and millions of americans have are gotten their refunds have already gotten their refunds. How can you make sure your money is safe, and when can you expect your money to come in . Weve got an update tonight with a partner of us financial services. The numbers speak to a decent return year so far seven million refunds filed for and received and thats about twice the amount you would normally see at this time of the year. Whats going on . Yeah. I think, first of all, they claim that about 75 of people who file get a refund, so all those folks want to file early file quickly and get that refund as soon as possible. Weve had folks calling wheres the so 1099 for this, and by law usually they have to have it by march 1st, but its been delayed a little. Gerri how much is that average refund . They say right now about 3500. Gerri and i check that online to see where it is in the process of getting to my house . Absolutely. Most of the filing by the way is done electronically. The irs wants it that way because they have less people working there, and folks seem to like that. Gerri so the irs has been for weeks now saying we dont have enough money to do what we do there are going to be big delays in refunds. Hmm, not so far. Do you think thats going the happen later in the seasonsome. Well it might start happening as we get bunched up and into that funnel part of the season where everybody says uhoh, i better file. Some of the new things this year that are happening, i talk to my cpa friends and one of the things in particular is the new box to check off gerri for obamacare . Obamacare. Gerri its going to be an expensive one for a lot of people. This year its easy, you check yes or no. Next year Insurance Companies are going to be sending you a 1095 to make sure you have it. But if you dont have insurance this year okay . Could be 95 a person in gerri up to 1 of your income. Whichever is greater by the way. Gerri yeah. I know a lot of people who have had to pay that fine. It can be hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Not happy. Gerri quickly, if you had one piece of advice for folks worried about this refund fraud what would you tell them to do . Check your account for accuracy, dont fall more some of these tricks that people, you know, theres something out there called phishing, and its almost like regular fishing where people are going to send you information in an email. The irs does not ask you for personal information over the email. Gerri no. They dont call you only certified letter. Yeah. So dont fall for some of this fake information thats out there. Stories about how chinese businessmen want young girls who are virgins because they think its good luck and the brokers sell the young girls they get them back a week later, send them back to the doctors and try to make them virgins again, recycle them and make money. You think we dont have that here but, yes, we do. The fbi has a whole unit that is spending time trying to get these traffickers. Just last week in the New York Daily News theres a report about a guy from virginia who was traveling to new york with a little toy for a little girl. He had a rude awakening when he arrived the hotel, but theres exploitation of labor. It is unbelievable. Its all over the United States. And who would have guessed . I mean, i was stunned. Gerri why does this continue . It seems like its an obviously outrageous story. People would be angry when they heard it. Why does it continue . Big business. Its incredible its a billion dollar industry. And, you know, even drug cartels. You know how much money they make selling drug, theyre morphing into Human Trafficking, because if you keep selling women and girls and little boys, its like, you know, you can keep recycling them. You sell them for a little while. Its a huge business and its not just sex trafficking which is a huge business, but its also labor trafficking. We all like those cheap items we get out of Southeast Asia all those clothes, well a lot of them are made with slave labor. We have people here in the United States who are domestics who cant leave where theyre working because they are so pressed and because theyre essentially slaves. It is, its unbelievable gerri. Its a very big difference especially for firsttime buyers. Do you think well finally finally get some of those millennials into the marketplace . Yeah. I think so, for sure. And i think that also protects themself, you know them, you know, a month or six months into it because people dont realize the expenses that come up after you own it. Gerri yes. [laughter] youre not going to be able to call the front desk person when your toilet goes out, youve got to gerri thats right. Having that 2 saved is going to help them. Yeah, thats going to hopefully encourage them to make a decision and do something. Gerri firsttime home buyers accounted for 33 of home sales in 2014. That is the smallest share since 1987. Think about that. And, you know, youve heard this as well as i have from millennials and other young folks that look, housing is just not cool enough for us, we might have to move we dont want to put down roots, were not the ownership society, wed rather rent everything. Is that an opinion . Is that a point of view thats likely to persist . In my opinion, i think its going to change because if you read, you know, the housing markets continuing to grow in large part because the rental market has continued to get more expensive. Gerri right. So i think theres going to reach a point where most people realize, hey listen i really am throwing away money. And i think when that starts to happen, its going to really you know, make another shift to keep things going the way that they are. Gerri either that or they have babies, and they suddenly want to live in something bigger than a twobedroom apartment, or in new york city, everybodys in a onebedroom apartment. Yeah, if that.
