Melting. Why are the highest temperatures of the decade essentially the hottest temperatures weve seen on reco. Eve actually been in a hiatus since t late 1990s. Charles joining me now one of my favorite climatologists peter morici. Peter, the fact of the matter this wasnt even about climate, was it . It was about economics. Absolutely. This deal was a terrible deal. I wrote that in the watch man times two years ago and on foxs website and so forth. I mean, basically it committed china to start cutting back co2 emissions in 2030 and until then, it could grow. Heck, our emissions are lower now than 1990 because american industry has been responding on its own. It does not need the administrative states. By the way, i have sandbags by my back door. And they didnt get wet. Charles yeah, i got i am on a rowboat this weekend, though. Ill keep it somewhere in the house, maybe the garage just in case. It feels to me, peter, and maybe you can help me here. Former president obama and europeans always kind of had this social justice, do the right thing for the environment thing, and they make and form these policies and then try to add an economic vinier to them to make it seem like there was a reason for doing it, other than the fact that, you know, they environmentalists came first. Well, my feeling is the economic problem went away. Our big concern was the switching from coal over to other fuels for electrical utilities and making cars more energy efficient. Well, the reality is technology is chging very quickly for the cars andell bin eleric cars before you know it. More than that, the internal Combustion Engine is getting more efficient at all times. Shell gas has changed the whole equation. Its now cheap to be environmentally cleaner, according to the environmentalists, and that is indeed happening. Unfortunately, this is not going to do a whole lot for west virginia, simply because the price of natural gas is doing it, and it doesnt need th the governments help. Charles let me ask you also along that line, those lines what a lot of people are saying is that this now will allow china in particular but other nations to leapfrog america with respect to the next generation of the electricity or energy, you know, from solar panels to wind because were not going to subbeddize that stuff anymore. Do you agree with that . I dont think so at all. American businesses are in more than half their profits abroad. They are moving very rapidly into these technologies because theyre being mandated by foreign governments. Lets face it. But more than that, theyre moving into these technologies because the economics is changing. Its changing very rapidly. And so they want to be out there, and they want to participate. Companies like General Electric and so forth. Theyre upset with President Trump because they like inconsistency of regulatory policy. But heck, consistency you know, when the government interferes too much, let the market do the job, the market will be fine on this. Charles all right. Speaking of ge, headline ss this morning that theyre sending a 1. 7 billion wind platform to the north sea. Think they want to have their cake and eat it too. Peter, well see you later on in the show. We want to bring on a panel togues. Jillian and tom. Tom, youve been on top of this stuff for years as well. Youve been pretty adamant about all of it. Yeah. I think President Trump made a really courageous decision because he was facing a lot of heat. He was facing heat fill the g7, even facing heat from members of his own family. But yet, you know, he listened i think to scott pruitt is one of the real advocates of this deal. At the end of the day, President Trump is a ceo. He looks at the risks, the costs, and the benefits. And clearly with huge cost and very few benefits, economically for sure, there was a big negative. But also the environment, there wasnt a huge environmental benefit, so he made the right decision, a courageous decision, and let everybody else complain because theyre going to do it anyway. Charles yeah, and the press conference today, the first question of course, guys, was does President Trump believe in Global Warming or Climate Change, noel . And i think scott pruitt, who, by the way, was masterful. I mean, he handled this guys pretty good. The guys and gals in that pressroom. But what do you make of the narrative that this is about climate america hurting the rest of the world in a self very selfish move. Noel, ill ask you first, and then you can reply. The way ill look at it is donald trump knew he was going to get a lot of flak for doing you know, making this move pulling out. Charles but flak from people who arent his constituents. They didnt go to the polls for him. They didnt vote for him. They dont and economically, it put us is a disadvantage. But what i will tell you is that you have to look at this from their point of view. Liberalism is kind of like a religion. And you ms with mher earth, you messed with basically a culture or a belief system within the liberals. Thats why you see so many governors. You have the governor of washington, new york, and california coming together to do a coalition to pick up, you know, where to help make good where the pay risk Climate Change deal is going on. Theyre going to form a coalition for this. Charles President Trump also left open, jillian, the idea of going back to negotiating tables. Saying, hey, you know what . This wasnt about the environment. It was about climate, but it was a bad deal for the american taxpayer. Yeah. Youre absolutely right, and you wrought up social justice a little bit ago. I want to talk about that because i think theres a huge social justice case for not participating in the paris climate conference. Paris climate pact and heres why. So lowincome families, families of color contribute a far larger portion of their takehome pay to electricity bills. To accomplish what we said we would accomplish under that tax, we would have had to increase the electricity bills by about 20 to 30 , and thats going to hit this families the hardest. I actually know what thats like. When i first moved to new york city, i was sharing a studio apartment with two girls. We called it the two bedroom apartment. And actually, the air conditioning became a really point of contention. I remember in the summer, a bunch of us getting, like, creamed corn frozen and putting it on our backs to cool down because we couldnt afford the electricity bills. And i think when youre asking families to make sacrifices like that and not actually benefit in the environment that much, its really unfair. Charles germany has gone through its own, even perhaps worse than that, and youre right. Its a killer, the idea of electricity making or breaking a household income. Tom, the media went crazy. It wasnt just governors and blue states. Spiegel has some pretty good things. Theres some a couple of other germ headlines out the that we cant use on tv. But what do you make of the hysteria . Its really its more than i thought it would be. Well, the media has a war with President Trump, and theyre really playing to their tune. Theyre really ratcheting it up. Charles but when they say to happen, hey, it was the last few years of the hottest years in the history of the planet. The polar ice cap is melting. Right. Charles do you care about people in other countries . When they say that the ocean is rising, whats the push back on all of this . Well, what the left does and the media is part of the left, in fact, thats the advocacy arm. They always push the emotional arguments, and thats why i think mr. Putin did a great job of staying on the message, staying on the economy, and staying on jobs. And as jillian mentioned, those are the people who put President Trump in office. The people in the flyover states. The people writing these stories. Theyre from the west coast and the east coast. They dont represent america. Charles well, lets listen to exactly what some of the doomandgloomers have to say. Roll tape. This is full nationalist America First damn the rest of the world. It was almost like mad lib for conservative speech. It was profoundly sad. He portrayed a very dark vision for the future of the country. This will be the day that the United States resigned as the leader of the free world. Its nothing short of that. Charles jillian, it sounded like a campaign promise. America first. It wasnt damning on the rest of the world, but it was american first. American taxpayer. American corporations. American businesses. You know, lower income people, americans first. Whats wrong with that . Look, this climate agreement was touted as this great break away of peace and diplomacy that was going to change it. But what were really relying on is the United States behavior and charles they didnt have to do anything until 2030. And we dont have anything to hold them accountable and open top of that, you have a Chinese Government where their entire legitimacy rests on economic growth. If they have a choice between retirement and economic growth, they dont have any incentive right now. Charles yeah, i have some recent photos of beijing. I do want to ask you, noel, you understand the aspect of this. The First Quarter was the worst ever for the dnc. Could this help them . Could this reenergize them in terms of raising money . Because now they have a central cause. With the very liberal base, it will help them with fundraising when you have people like tom stire and their environmental pacts. But on the everyday issue, charles, people care about a job with they care about food on the table. Really, obama didnt get elected on Climate Change, and i dont think these midterm, i dont think that the big campaign deals are going to be Climate Change. Charles right . And people that transferred and voted for obama and then trump, these were union people. These are not the Climate Change. Pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, wisconsin. Right. I think on the election, theyre on antiscientific on this issue. If you look at what Clean Power Plan would have done, were talking about the u. S. Contribution being 200ths of a degree celsius. Were talking about the impact on rising water levels. Thats nothing. And ask americans to sacrifice so big to accomplish so little. Its unreasonable. Charles especially to those folks who actually propelled President Trump into the white house. Thanks a lot. Just when you thought Kathy Griffin drama couldnt get any weirder or offensive, well, now shes the victim. Theres a bunch of old white guys trying to silence me, and im just here to say thats wrong. If you dont stand up, you get run over. And whats happening to me has never happened, ever. In the history of this great country. He broke me. He broke me. He broke. And then i was, like, no, this isnt right. This isot right. Charles Kathy Griffin has a serious melt down, of course the alt left provocativer. There it is right there. She posed with a bloody imitation of President Trumps decapitated head. And now all of a sudden hes the bad guy. He and his family are attacking her. This goes beyond perhaps liberal hypocrisy. But it doesnt stop there. Roll tape. The message is clear. Criticize, lose your job. And thats what happened to kathy. Charles so if everyone who criticized the president lost their jobs, then there would be 138,000 there wouldnt be 138,000 jobs added to this months jobs report. Here to discuss, gregg, let me start with you. Even though madison just got her law degree, and ill be weighing in on her expertise as well. You written that legally, its a felony to knowingly and willfully make a threat against the president of the United States. His decapitated head comes very close, no . Yeah. The secret service contacted her. Theyre investigating. Yeah, its a crime. The trouble is they would have to prove that she intended to instigate an assassination of the president or some other violence against the president. Thats very hard to prove. In terms of the other legal case, defamation, the president could actually try to sue her. Parody satire protected speech, so is art and opinion is despicable and deeply offensive as what she did, you know, it probably would not survive a defamation case. Charles there is speech, though, that violates the First Amendment. There are certain forms of speech that can be considered a crime. Hate speech. Yeah. Hate speech. Yelling fire in a crowded theater when theres no fire so on and so fourth. But none of that would apply here. I mean, look, the fact that Kathy Griffin didnt anticipate the enormous public fall out suggests that shes as dumb as a bucket of hair, and then she compounds her stupidity by trying to claim the mantle that shes the victim, even though she victimized the president , his family, his children, and so on and so fourth. I mean, lisa bloom ought to be ashamed of herself for trying to pedal that farce. Charles well, madison, she is trying to pedal it, and its sort of shocking that Kathy Griffin would actually hire an attorney, and you wonder where it goes from here. Right. I mean, i think from the very beginning, this was a desperate ploy for attention for someone with a failing career, quite frankly. And ive said it before. Ill say it again. Just because the First Amendment gives you the right to Say Something, doesnt mean its what you should be saying or doing. She crossed the lines here. People on both sides of the line agreed with that. And shes taking a play right out of Hillary Clintons playbook blaming everybody but herself. And in that press conference, she took time to blame the president , the president s family, tucker carlson, old white men. I can tell you right nowhes not getting fired just because of old white men. Im not an o white man, and i guarantee if i owned a club or restaurant that had her scheduled to perform, i would fire her from the gig too. I think its absolutely radio ridiculous. She needs to sit down and shut up. Charles well, madison, shes not sitting down and shutting up. Neither is hillary clinton. What do you make of theyre trying to at least thrust themselves to the forefront of Womens Movement like theyre the representative of representatives of women and the struggles and victim hood of women in america these days. I think its embarrassing because there are real struggles that women face in different areas of life. And for them to get up there and say my personal failures and bad decisions are sexism just takes away from the people who are really affected by that. Hillary clinton lost because she ran a bad campaign. Kathy griffin, you know, struggles in her career because shes not really that funny. And what she did like i said before, crossed the line. Charles gregg, ive been reading articles too where she actually before this said that baron trump was fair game. She suggested or hinted that she would go after him and apparently he was watching tv when all of this unfolded. And this had a devastating impact on him. Again, maybe theres no legal case here. But theres something so terrible about that. She is a person who would do anything for attention. Its this sort of look at me, lookt me. I mean, look at all the her stuff shes done. Undressing in time square on new years eve on national television. That was pretty awful to experience. We were all traumatized by that. Look, we know attention getters in our life, theyre sort of pathetic all rolled into one. Shes the quintessential attention seeker and, you know, she glommed onto lisa bloom, who would walk a mile for a camera and a controversy, so there you go. Charles perfect match. Guys, thank you, both, very much. What if i told you that germany chancellor Angela Merkel and ge ceo made threats that could actually be music to your ears and your wallets . Thats right. American taxpayers, maybe we wont have to do all the heavy lifting after all. Well be right back say carl, we have a question about your brokerage fees. Fees . What did you have in mind . I dont know. 4. 95 per trade . Uhhh. And i was wondering if your brokerage offers some sort of guarantee . Guarantee . Where we can get our fees and commissions back if were not happy. So can you offer me what schwab is offering . Whats with all the questions . Ask your broker if theyre offering 4. 95 online equity trades and a satisfaction guarantee. If you dont like their answer, ask again at schwab. Charles so remember when Angela Merkel said europe might have to go to loan . Well, she was joined by ge ceo who tweeted this last night. The Paris Agreement, Climate Change industry must now lead and not depend on the government. You know, i think both of them met meant those comments as threats. But wouldnt it be great if taxpayers stopped subsidizing nations and businesses . Here togues, peter morici is back with matt welch. Kristen, let me ask you. To being i said to myself. Im somebody thanks markets are great for solving problems. It doesnt mean that i dont think theres no role for government, especially on the issue with the environment. Dealing with internallities when i do something that causes harm to something else, the government has a role to step in there. But thats very different from massive subsidies from industries and stuff like that. So to the extent that we can have some kind of framework that protects the environment but markets do what they do, i think thats a good thing. Chles matt,f course Angela Merkel upset about the whole g7 nato meeting and, you know, the rumor that maybe theyll create their own army or armed forces. I think thats music to the ears of american taxpayers, and we just came from eight years of government picking winners and losers. Subsidizing,
