I think both sides here are at fault, lou. Initially cruz could have come out really strong and said i condemn this, this shouldnt be done. He kind of did after some time, but and i know he says he doesnt control the pac, thats probably the case. An antitrump pac. What youve seen the vitriol between both cruz and trump over the last several weeks has helped one person. Its helped Hillary Clinton. Ive said for some time now that trump and cruz have to figure out a way to work together. I know all these people out there in washington and new york feel better when they use their hashtag never trump, and some of the trump people feel better when they say ted cruz, forget it, lying ted. The establishment in the republican and the Democrat Party are clear on one thing, they do not want someone who is more populist to get into power. They dont want trade deals renegotiated. Dont want immigration policy that lets in 1. 7 legal immigrants every year. 200,000 or so happen to be from muslim countries. They dont want us to move in any way to deport people who are here legally. They want to die on the hills. If it means Hillary Clinton has to be president for four years, there are a lot of people in the establishment, lou, who are fine with that. Not what they necessarily wanted but if it means stopping donald trump and theyre okay with it. Lou it wont be on the hills, it will be the fancier penthouse and condominiums across the country. Hes playing some sort of role that i dont recognize, im not acquainted with it in the literature where he stands as the arbiter of moral conscience. At the same time. He manipulates the levers of political power from capitol hill to soon the Gop Convention, and then all the while whispers about his own ambitions. We are watching mitt romney show more energy than he did in his entire term as governor of massachusetts or candidate for the president of the United States in 2012 lou, a couple of things, number one, trump has a lot of work to do, right . Cant be sending out tweets about women or id lose the whole lying ted thing, id lose all of that. If i were advising donald trump, i would say go right into general election mode. Take the fight to the establishment. Lou he did he pivoted for maybe 15 or 20 minutes. I get that. But what he needs to do now, he has his people. He needs to get some of cruzs people on his side. Got reassure them hes going to do conservative things, not just talking the conservative game or the populist game, hes going to do it and reassure the establishment folks hes going to be really good for business. Hes got to get specific. Got to get more people in the movement. I know hes picked up more states. If he doesnt, he will not become president. And the same thing with ted cruz. Cruz has got, to at some point, if he doesnt beat him in more states and by significant margins, cruz has a decision to make. He can either feel like hes morally pure and ideologically pure and stamp his feet and say no way, never trump, never helping him or the two of them can figure something out. People watching say that will never happen. Other alliances in history have happened. Bad blood has been spilled before between two candidates and theyve come together. I think that could happen again. But the egos have got to be checked. The country put first period. Thats what has to happen. Lou laura, youre not only one of my very favorite talk show hosts. Back at you you are certainly among the very brightest, and as i listen to you struggle to bring these two candidates into line and to conform to a shape and a direction that you and i suspect millions of others of americans would like to see. Rubio is out and jeb is out, they lose in home states. Lindsey graham was at negative percent in his own state. I dont know how you can be. That they dont represent anyone in the Republican Party and wagging their finger at us, last time i checked paul ryan didnt deliver wisconsin for mitt romney. I like paul ryan but lost wisconsin by 7 points. And losing most of the rest of the country because he pretends to neutrality that doesnt exist. He pretends to be faint of heart, if you raise your voice or the language is a little coarse. Lou if you do not love this president ial primary season, you are incapable of love for anything vaguely political. Senator ted cruz not at a loss for words himself as he counterattacks the counterattacks of donald trump against his attacks, except it seems he cant find his own words. And we are following this closely. Today cruz called trump a, quote, and i thought this was rather imaginative, sniveling coward. It took me back to black and white cowboy movies. It is a direct quote from the kids animated Television Show he man and the masters of the universe. It was also, and this is one of my personal favorites, in the 1951 bob hope film, my favorite spy. One of the best ever. I dont know, maybe ted cruz like me likes old movies. He gets material there. Cruz stole a line from another movie too recent for my taste, the american president. Look, when theyre arguing over their wives, i wouldnt call that high toned. It was the super pac supporting him, whether he likes it or not, thats a part of his campaign, and so the cruz people started it, now trump has fired back and theyre arguing. Look, this is not high toned. Id rather have them discuss tax reform, but a lot of people have lou god save us from tax reform. Lot of people have reacted the same way you have. They love this argument. I feel badly for both candidates and their wives. Theyll survive. Lou but i have to say, the reality is, it seems to me, goes to the fact that the candidates themselves are passionate about what theyre talking about. We havent seen this on the campaign trail in my experience. Not since, and then it was only flashes when reagan was running for president in 1980, and that, as i say, only flashes of it. What were watching now is passionate determination to win, and i got to say, its great to watch, and i wonder what is going to happen as we move at some point to the nomination process, we find out whos going to win. I presume it will be trump, given his lead, and then ultimately with, again, i assume Hillary Clinton. What do you think . I think its all a safe assumption, looks like trump is already looking ahead to having won the nomination, and planning what he wants to do to the extent he plans beyond a single day, in the general election against Hillary Clinton. He met with conservative groups in washington this week. Ones that dont endorse candidates, but ones that will help him broaden the base. And his base of supporters, and once he wins the nomination, assuming he does, he gave a really extraordinary speech to aipac, the proisrael group using a teleprompter and doesnt like teleprompter and asked people to give him a list of potential conservative Supreme Court nominees. Another outreach to conservative groups. Hes moving to enlarge his base already, and thats what Laura Ingraham, thats what she was urging him to do. And i think he started it. Lou and it is i thought the aipac presentation, people were sort of saying wait a minute, this is terrible, its going to be a horrible moment for donald trump. He mastered the moment. And i have to say i was thinking as you were talking, there is one other element here about donald trump people are not giving him credit for. Hes the only truly amongst the candidates or the rest are career politicians, hes also the only one who isnt a lawyer against presuming that it is hillary, presuming that the final opponent will be ted cruz. Hes the only nonlawyer. Thats sort of exhilarating to me. Yeah, well that was one of the things that helped ronald reagan. He wasnt a lawyer either, and look, it shows with cruz that hes not a rather with trump that hes not a lawyer. If he were a lawyer, he wouldnt be saying some of the things he says for sure. Lou yeah. Cruz and distant kasich are working with the republican establishment to prevent trump from reaching the magic 1237 number in delegates as they try to set up cruz for the socalled open contested, brokered or really broken convention that many anticipate. Kasich is a remarkable nonfactor in this race whose feelings seem to be hurt if anyone reminds him, he is in actuality in fourth place, not third place, in number of delegates. Marco rubio, whos no longer in the race, has more delegates than kasich, and it is he who is in third place. Frustration is building with kasichs role as obvious spoiler, and with republican elites who are telling the grassroots theyll make all the decisions for everybody at the convention. A new fox news poll shows they dont like that idea out there in the grassroots. Rank and file, you know, us mere mortals. Poll shows 59 of republicans believe the nominee should be the candidate with the most delegates. Even if the candidate doesnt quite reach 1237. Of course, that socalled open convention that suddenly the elites are talking about would be first in the hands of the rnc rules committees and dont forget presiding over all of it, Speaker Paul Ryan who says hes mr. Neutral. Hell be presiding over the convention as he presumes to be neutral and presumes to criticize the field of coarsened and callous candidates who dont rise to his lofty standards and hes thinking of a particular candidate in particular.
