Transcripts For FBC Countdown To The Closing Bell 20140130

Countdown to the closing bell starts right now. Fetus the robot and bob greifeld. What more can we want . I am liz claman, live at the Nasdaq Market place in the heart of times square where we are awaiting a huge Earnings Reports to get to you. Google and amazon coming out in an hour from now, widely held stocks, you may air and on your portfolio but also will barometers for what is going on in technology and also ringing the closing bell with some very wellknown superstar nfl faces and our fox sports robot cletus. The last hour of trading, a rally on our hands and you might call todays rally the facebook affect. We should tell you Mark Zuckerberg and social networking giant hitting it out of the park with the Earnings Report yesterday and now getting 63 of its ad revenue from mobile. That is absolutely few. Market watchers and analysts took stuff on fire today, up 15 . It also had a brand new alltime high of 62. 50 a share. As impressive as those numbers are we cannot give facebook all the credit for todays rally. The u. S. Economy growing 3. 2 in queue 4 thanks to robust consumer spending. Markets love to see that. That was 4. 1 growth in the third quarter, stronger performance than anticipated. Some remaining drag on the economy from the partial Government Shutdown the number was very welcome. Look at yields on a ten year treasury note, it rose to 2. 7 from 2. 68 on the Federal Reserve announced it would make further reductions in its asset program. As i mentioned, a massive earnings day, dozens of Companies Reported including auto nation getting a major boost from the sale of very high end luxury cars, were talking 95,000 mercedes, talking to auto nations chairman and ceo mike jackson later in the show about what we can infer from the fact that if people are buying ttat many, is the economy doing much better than expected . One of the busiest trading days of the season, big names, everything from these and exxon mobile, 3 m, all reporting. Nicole petallides on the floor of the Stock Exchange with todays winners. Liz it is earnings season and it is a busy day so lets look, take a look at visa and both of these names out with their earnings and these are earnings winners, up 383 but that is worth 17. 6 so that is a huge move and visa, stellar performer today helping the Dow Jones Industrial average moved higher. They came out with earnings that topped analysts estimates and also guided the company over the last few years because in 20112012 they had some weak results they have been trying to refocus this company and today a very nice showing. The profit beat the street estimates. Profits rose 8. 8 and one simple way to explain it is people using their cars a lot more. Liz perfect discussion with mike jackson of auto nation. Many stocks are rebounding so the question becomes will this rally picked up steam into next week . To the floor show traders of the Stock Exchange, cme group and nynex, i am at the nasdaq looking at real winners. Let me start with you. When you put it altogether january may be the worst we have seen in a couple years. What do you think happens in the next couple sessions . Encouraging to see a balance and stabilization and emergingmarket. That is a factor, helpful to this market overall, tough to make too much of this because we have seen a lot of volatility. This is the new normal and you cant make much of this rally. If we got 1815 in the s p and give it a little credit, technology is starting to show signs of performance particularly ahead of the google and amazon earnings but tech is a standout. The nasdaq back over january blows, the nasdaq, the dow jones, something to point out and all the indices managed to hold december lows, critical level of support Going Forward and the fact the we had a shortterm collection for longerterm january will be down forward for the year, a lot less robust as a result of that. A couple surprises, Consumer Discretionary one of the worst performing sectors this month, and falling out of bed, good signs of strength and technology, health care continues to be strong, utilities has people scratching their heads. Some of that could be attributed to the pullback. Liz the ticket in nasdaq added 89 points. And a mostly obscene in two years. Marks tone, this rally might not be for real. What do you see here . This last month was contrived. First the economy failing, then the fed and now the emerging markets and the fact is we had a very good run up and especially in the Fourth Quarter of 2013 was due to cool off a little bit. Gdp number today was very strong. There was a definitely mess in the housing numbers, havent had a lot of good housing numbers in the last few months but all in all still growing, puuling off a little bit. This is a good time to find stocks that are on sale. Liz what is not on sale is crudeoil, bumping of 97 for the first time in i want to say six weeks and natural gas doing a complete reversal. Bring this up because the weather is getting warmer in new york city, not as freezing as it was a day ago. The game we saw a natural gas at 11 , were seeing a slice back of a on that. You will see below volatility continue over is the next couple weeks. Looks like a real cold we have been going for the last week or two will be gone for the foreseeable future so you will see Natural Gas Prices fell off. I would look for one more pop before march ends. Liz i would think there are few more stocks to go. Thanks, gentlemen. We have got to run, we have the busiest scene outside our window at the Nasdaq Market site. As we mentioned at the top of the show we are watching facebook surging today. Lets take a look, you see shares of social market heavyweight still getting a huge pot on yesterdays blockbuster Earnings Report. Stock is currently trading, considered higher at the moment, 14 , nearly 15 higher. And other Technology Giant basking in the green, google up 3 after hanging up on motorolas had said business. Dennis kneale, this broke after the bell, the first headline i saw, the fact that they are selling, a company, Motorola Mobility than they bought a couple years ago, lenovo takes no prisoners when it comes to hard work, what does that mean for google going into hardware and what does it mean for lenovo . Dennis wall street deciding today this is a relief rally, the hemorrhaging at motorola is over because google has lost 2 billion since it acquired motorola 20 months ago and operating it. You bought ed for 12. 5 billion and selling it to the chinese for less than 3 but brought in 6 billion by selling off this business and pocketing motorola cash so wall street looking forward deciding google will do well without motorola. Also shows you the Smartest Companies are not so smart when it comes to making smart phones. Was a waste outside its core business, but 20 acquisitions in the past year google is acquiring all kinds of stuff that has nothing to do with advertising. I am waiting to see it is a really smart strategy and fought out or a food fight, you throw it against the wall and see what sticks. Google earnings wise people are looking for double digit growth, earnings pershare of 60 when the report after the bell, net income 17 they expect 4 billion, revenue of 40 to 16 billion. We will see if earnings are hurt by several billion dollar charge to get rid of that motorola, wall street wont parrot out that. That is google. Want to talk face book . Liz we could talk facebook pour amazon. Technology is the name of the game and you heard mark newton say tech is looking like a standout not just today but over time. Dennis look at how the nasdaq has been weaker in the month of january than the other indexes. People thought tax tech was heading for a fall. You got to think what is not to like . They face two big crappiess, one for facebook was can we get on to the iphone and tablet and mobile . Mobile, 70 of users now over half of at scum, 50 and revenue is great so we have to see the other crappies, we always worried before how many people they have in the tent. Wall street is looking at what a good job facebook does selling stuff to people that are in the tenth and doing a good job. Liz it quieted a few people that were critical of it. Quoting some of the media. Thank you very much. We appreciate it. Google, facebook call list on the nasdaq, google reporting earnings after the bell, same with amazon. We will give you a full breakdown. Lets get to the fact that the closing bell is a few minutes away. We look at 49 minutes of all kinds of news we are going to give you, battle of the luxury brands, bmw versus mercedes, mercedes came out on top, auto nation chairman and ceo Michael Jackson says mercedes and bmw held his company get on top. And what customers are driving, what is revving up his earnings. Right here in the heart of times square, superbowl in sanity. Fox sports, every network has a set and nasdaq ceo bob greifeld doesnt need a set. We are well entrenched right here at Seventh Avenue and 48th street, we will talk about what else is here. Football, market investment, fox business exclusive and as we continue our special live edition of countdown to the closing bell live from the nasdaq take a look outside. You. Auto sales have roared back from the depths of the 2009 recession boosting Companies Like harmon. Listen to what harmon did. The maker of audio equipment for luxury cars jumping on the auto recovery wagon. Harmon stock surging after a Strong Quarter helped by booming sales of luxury vehicles. This stock up 17 , a huge move. The Auto Dealer Group is something that has done very well. If lot of people have high end audio in their cars how about the actual car sellers . Auto nation benefiting sales of luxury cars like mercedesbenz and bmw reporting blockbuster product and what will be the drivers of growth . Mike jackson, auto nation chairman and ceo joining me from Fort Lauderdale, fla. The numbers to me look good. You miss concern metrics for the analysts. I am less interested in that and more interested in fact that high end luxury cars do so well. Give us the sense of what happened. First i would like to say it is the 1year anniversary of launching the auto nation brand from coast to coast. I appeared on your show your ago and since then we had four consecutive alltime record quarters tapping off the year with Fourth Quarter up 20 . And you are absolutely right. Normally the premium luxury business in the Fourth Quarter this year was spectacular making up from before the 6 of our profitability and was good for all the germans whether it was bmw, particularly strong with mercedesbenz because in the Fourth Quarter they launched a top of the line all knew they entered a new price segment so we had in our mercedesbenz showrooms new customers, much younger, looking at the see l. A. And off the chart demand for this after this new x class and we sell almost 10 of mercedesbenz in the United States and is a big position for us. Really drove the business in the Fourth Quarter. Tracy i like you because you get a sense from how your company does to how the United States is doing when it comes to car sales. Can we deduce that if the average price of a x class car is 94,000 can we do that the economy is doing pretty well if you are selling as many as you are . When you talk about the economy there is a bifurcated recovery. On one half if you have a global perspective and are highly educated and have assets invested in stock markets and other instruments you have done very well in this recovery. On the other side of the equation, where you are competing against global labor, on gdp basis has had an anemic recovery, i think it has been tough. So it is a bit of a bifurcated recovery. When it comes to automotive we have had a good recovery because we had a depression in automotive. People stopped buying cars, pushed the average age to 11. 3 so people had to do something and we had great new products and financing. The automotive recovery has been stronger than the Overall Economic recovery. Liz you are in florida, we have seen wild weather and a lot of cars spin out in the southern states. Is it ridiculous for me to ask whether you might see some type of bump in sales from weatherrelated issues where people give up on their old cars . First, i am very fortunate. In Fort Lauderdale it is 72 degrees and you will be 80 over the weekend but for our businesses in tennessee, georgia and washington d. C. It has been a tough few days, atlanta particular of the which simply doesnt have the experience or the equipment to deal with the type of storm they have. We had our dealerships open all night, sheltering people who could not get home and our employees moved heaven and earth to get food and blankets and comfort to these people. Not just customers, any one. I humanitarian effort. I am sure there will be some wrecked cars out of the Insurance Companies to pay for but that is not what we are thinking about at the moment. Liz great heart, greg corp. Thank you so much. Great to see you. Liz mike jackson, auto nation chairman, the stock and getting a terrific. As we discussed the sales of luxury cars mercedes, on monday we got the ceo of mercedesbenz who says he sees his most formidable rival, you have to stay tuned for monday and find out and super bowl commercials will be amazing but what is ahead for the luxury car market . And other fox business exclusive. Stay tuned. I am going to be reading the closing bell in a few minutes. Facebook, largely on the back of its mobile apps revenue. Charlie gasparino says he is getting interesting ads on his facebook feet. What convinced him to brave the cold . He is going to wwlk down Seventh Avenue and come here to talk about it. And ceo bob greifeld will be with me after of a break, ceo of the nasdaq to talk about how Major Companies are getting in on the superbowl action. He will give his super bowl predictions right here on fox business, live from the nasdaq and superable boulevard. Liz we are in the heart of new york city on the floor of the market site, 43 and 7 food, a block from superbowl boulevard, we are joined in a fox business exclusive with the quarterback of the nasdaq himself, bob greifeld, ceo of nasdaq. Exciting to have this year. Glad to have you here. An exciting week, all the superbowl fans out there having a great time. We have a bunch of players coming to the close tonight and you will be there. Liz this is exciting. For me to have this fox sports right outside, people seem to be really excited. What is wonderful about times square is things are happening here all the time. This is more active than normal but regularly we have exciting things going on. Liz on top of it an exciting market today. Nasdaq has 80 points. News corp. 21st century fox, fox business, lets talk about the superbowl. We have seattle and there are a lot of Nasdaq Listed Companies in those cities. When you look at nasdaq we have 14 listed companies, 21 in seattle, founded for all our companies. Liz costco, denver, liberty. Talk to me about what you look at when you look to be all the minutiae of statistics that come through on these things. All the ties to the afl and denver one of the regional teams as i root for them. Liz they are the underdog. I dont think they are true underdogs. It is a close game. I would not call seattle landed on. Liz you have noodles those were two very good ones. Theyre very vibrant cities. A lot of ipo activity and the spirit of growth and animation ensconced in both cities. There are great representatives of American Business culture. Liz so much talk about the Stock Exchange, how are you doing . Doing very well. When you look at our franchises broadening dramatically, last year, biotech was the standout, 98 of ideas came to the market in biotech but traditional industrials we saw our share of
