Reporter yeah, it is a little bit quiet, ashley, but its been picking up. We were here in the middle of the night. Last night they opened things up at 8 p. M. Local time, but folks have been lining up, actually, since wednesday night to yet in, thanksgiving night at 8 p. M. We have talked to several shoppers, one of which came at 4 p. M. Yesterday. In fact, we saw her at 5 a. M. , so you talk about an intrepid shopper, 13 hours later, fifth visit back to target. This one she came back by herself without her daughter so she could buy her something she wouldnt with know what it was unless, of course, her daughter sees that broadcast. Basically, the doorbusters were mostly they had new ones at midnight. The truck was here overnight to restock some of the supplies, the xbox one or the playstation 4, youre out of luck. For those guys you have to keep searching for them, theres going to be a limited supply as theyre brand new. But what has been selling really well not only the tvs which were some of the doorbuster, this one not but it is on sale, and i should mention that the electronics have a separate checkout over there, and its pretty brisk. Also seeing some of these newfangled speakers here. Sony is one example. Camera, and, of course, some holiday classics that no collection should be without. Just to spend a little quality time with the family. And also staples. Weve seen a lot of people checking out with staples, and theyre telling us some of the betterselling items have been towels and pajamas. People not only buying some of the gift items, some toys for the kids, perhaps, but also picking up some other items that you need for every day as well and trying to take advantage of the fact that youre seeing finish and target telling us nationally theyre seeing better traffic than ever here in terms of, you know, their early opening, at 8 p. M. This year. They were open at 9 p. M. Last year. Ashley you wonder as many and more stores open on the actual thanksgiving day and earlier in the day whether that takes away a little bit from black friday itself. Reporter or if theyre just spreading out the sales over a longer period of time. That is definitely something that we wont know for several days time. I will tell you i walked through the south bay pavilion, were adjacent to it as big boxes are beside a mall, and i walked through this morning, and there were a lot of tiredlooking people in there, sort of reminded me of an airport, you know, in the middle of a snowstorm, people camped out everywhere. Today had the cinna bun open, the pretzel place. One interesting thing was a shop selling suitcases and bags i guess so you could take all the loot home, the shopping bags probably not strong enough. Thank you, gentlemen. Things may be heating up for target stores, but the stock is filling the chill feeling the chill. So how are some of the other retail giants faring today . We know that yesterday, thursday, so many of the retailers made the choice to be open because of the fact that its a shorter Holiday Shopping season. Right now despite the tact youre seeing the markets the fact youre seeing the markets hitting new highs, the retailers are not necessarily participating. Walmart hit a new high. Jcpenney, macys, target and sears all pulling back, macys did hit a 52week high as well. Its worth noting as we take a look at walmart, 81. 07, as i noted, hitting a new high, do you know how many rebellinger the transactions they had just between 6 and 10 p. M. . Ten million. It just sounds so many, right . And, obviously, talked about the traffic in the stores. In addition to the fact 400 million payment views. Target continues to talk about their online sales, not necessarily so much the traffic in the stores per se. So thats what were watching overall. Jcpenney, been hearing the am lists talking about the fact analysts talking about the fact, jcpenney was an example of this, but they have to discount promotion afromotion and how much does that promotion after promotion, and jc enemy was named as one of the stores doing exactly that. You may see retail sales higher, but the margins and the revenue coming in year lower op some of these guys. Ashley yeah, when you have such fierce competition, thats what happens. Now for a rook at the broader markets, lets get to the floor show. Traders at the new york stock exchange, the che group and the nymex. Jonathan corps pee know, weve just been talking with nicole, yes, its a shortened day today, but were still moving higher. Absolutely. It is a shortened day. Its a great day. We get cobring our to bring our kids to work today so we can put them to work and try and help this market move higher and higher. [laughter] yes, in fact, we cant forget the fact that it is a half day today, theres still a lot going on. Its the end of the month, weve got some changes going on in the s p, jcpenneys coming out, so that is going to administer volume and volatility. And next week weve got a very robust Economic Calendar ending with the unemployment number. So what you start to see now is a lot of Portfolio Managers starting to mark up their portfolios at the end of the month and then make sure theyre positioned accordingly getting into this week next week because time is running out. Theres been a lot of money on the sidelines, and theres only a few days that are left to really get that benefit of this market moving higher and higher. So were going to start seeing that momentum, and it will continue into next week. Ashley lets get to ira epstein at the cme. What are you seeing today on this shortened day . Basically, the same that jonathan was talking about. Therell be new money going to work in the stock market next week. Thats the first of the month money. Im seeing also Short Covering taking place in the metal markets, so youre getting that going into month end. A lot of money was made on the short side over the past couple of months here, so some traders taking the profit there, and a big rally taking place in the Energy Markets today in terms of crude oil, up about a dollar. But, you know, its the end of the month, its a half day, thin volumes, you cant put too much weight on anything going on today in the markets. Ashley good point. Paul saks at the nymex, you trade gold. Gold having a much better day today for what has been a lousy month. There are a lot of gold bearerrers out there, arent there . Yeah. Were up today 1 on dollar weakness, but we are certainly in a wear market. Bear market. Theme of this year twofold the breakdown of gold as a safe haven model, i mean, we had cyprus, syria, the shutdown, all three of those situations give you very little, and, of course, people are going to be squaring their books. I would look for gold to trade lower next week. Ashley interesting. Jonathhn, you mentioned the busy week next week, is there anything out there that could, you know, create concern in the markets, do you think . If we get a bad jobs number, i guess, but it pushes back the taper effect. On a shortterm basis it is good for the markets, but what we have seen is all the Economic Data leading up to the unemployment number, its all a piece of this big recipe thats there. And investors really arent buying into the fact when this unemployment number moves in the direction we want, they dont really believe thats truly happening. Talk to your neighbors, your friends, your relatives. The job market is still tough. So i think everyone has learned accordingly to really take these numbers on a granular basis. Ashley ira, you know, theres still time for seem to get into this market, but there are a lot of folks out there that just believe theyve been sitting on the sidelines too long and believe that theyve missed the boat. And i think thats going to continue in a good part of december as well. And then after the fist of the the first of the year as people get back from the holiday, they might jump in again one more time. You know, a lots going to depend on december, the unemployment number and what the fed does. I dont think the feds going to do anything until the latter part of the First Quarter of the year when ms. Yellen, hopefully, becomes chairperson. And shell take it under her realm. Why would they make changes now . Ashley good point. Paul, to you, last question. The taper is built into these markets, but anytime you start to talk about seriously, we see quite a big correction. What do you think the market will do once we can make that final move to tighten up the Monetary Policy . Yeah. What did you see at the biggest mall in america . It seems consumers did take those early openings, we saw high traffic at 8 00 p. M. Traffic tailed off for the midnight hour as more Stores Opened up so we think Stores Opened early, got the jump and captured those early sales. Ashley i was reading the experienced Consumer Confidence index which you say shows Consumer Confidence slightly higher this year but that doesnt correlate with university of Michigan Confidence numbers month after month. Why do you why are you more confident about the consumer than the Michigan Survey is . If you look at experienced Consumer Expectations index we are able to divide our index with 20,000 variables. We keep on the digital consumer, consumers that bought on line in the last month. They are 14 more confident this year than in previous years. Look at this year for online sales to be more positive than last year. Ashley the same issues, the economy struggling to get a foothold, unemployment still elevated. I get the sense consumers are still pretty tight with their money. Consumers are and there are intricacies to Consumer Expectations index. Those people saying they plan to make bigticket purchases are less confident so look for those bigticket purchases to happen later this Holiday Season. The other big factor to consider is plastic is back. We looked at consumer limits on their credit cards and they reached a high, the highest point they have been since 2008. Consumer Credit Ratings are looking really positive going into this Holiday Season. Look for more spending happening on plastic than in previous years. Ashley you Cover Companies like lulu lemon, abercrombie and fitch and so on. Have these retailers changed their strategy in any significant way compared to previous years . We would say a couple things. Some made the decision to open early. You have seen some tweaks and promotions, some were hired this year, we seem to get consumers to make those early purchases and some retailers like abercrombie and fitch added models to the front of the score at a greater selection to create a little excitement around the thanksgiving black friday shopping event. They are trying to compete for those early dollars. Ashley who will come out as the winner and to deal have concerns about . Abercrombie and fitch were 50 off yesterday evening. The store was jammed, we have lulu lemon, very little promotion but we saw the longest lines, strong sign for them. On the flip side lot of mid Tier Department stores continued to struggle. This is the year of the high end, we will continue to follow through. Ashley all of these store openings on thanksgiving day, does that change consumers outlook . Does that take away from black friday . I dont think it does. Over the past ten years we noticed one of the busiest Online Shopping days is thanksgiving day. The fact that those sales are starting to shift to brick and Mortar Stores and online is continuation of a tradition we have had over the last decade. We are trading 16. 4 times this years bottomup operating, if we traded 16. 4 times next years estimated bottom of operating earnings you are talking 2,000 on the s p. If you look at the correlation with the stock market and christmas sales christmas sales will be of roughly 5 even though we have eight day is less shopping time in between thanksgiving and the Christmas Holiday and Consumer Discretionary sector has been one of the best performing sectors. Someone thinks the consumer is in good shape. Ashley i wanted to get back to stocks but last time you were on the show in september you picked riteaid and that stock has jumped 68 , pretty impressive. Do you like that stock . The difference between perception and reality is where investors opportunities lie and Interest Rates will stay low longer than people think.
