point out before any of that we were still $70 trillion in the red as a species. so this notion we can all hang it on the meltdown. the sheer size and acceleration of the debt is remarkable and scary. seven years ago the u.s. government that was about or $.5 trillion. it is three times that now. seven years. what will it be in another seven years? what happens on the cost source? they shielded us from a lot of the pain. not all the pain. consider this, just one or 2% uptick in interest rates will add trillions of red ink here, there, everywhere. conservatives gathered in washington talked a lot about it but even tea party favorites who paul very well are not offering many specifics to deal with it. but someone is going to have to, and soon because this is about of the western world out to lunch, this is guys like putin who see us as the bombs we have become and enjoy eating our lunch. this is a global security issue, john mccain will tell you when you're in over your head, don't be surprised some not so friendly folks kick you in the you know what. the senator, former president a candidate joins us now. >> it is good to be with you. neil: i think these figures are numbing. they seem paltry by comparison. >> it was extremely low. neil: was sort of slipped past it. >> it is something that seems to me it is so big we haven't the wherewithal or the guts to address it. every time we propose some measure, we sort of leave it alone area did we conservatives have not done enough, but i believe really the only way you're going to force it, i know this sounds simplistic, but an amendment to the constitution. it is awfully hard to get around a constitutional amendment. we can get on the other path, that means entitlement reform. nobody want to touch entitlement reform. neil: nobody spelled out, none of the real hits last week. when it came to the living adjustments, but they don't do that. >> let me give you. sequestration was across-the-board cuts. that exempted certain functions of the government, laid 50% on 90% of the budget which is defense, i believe was incredibly damaging to defense, but that, in all due respect, is not a courageous act when you say we will have across-the-board cuts because you throw out the baby with the bathwater. neil: you cannot decide. >> sequestration i believe was an admission of failure to attack the areas, god knows there is waste and excess. neil: you will commit over doing nothing? >> i would not do what we have done to defense. when you exempted so many branches of government and institutions and then 50% defense, 50% nondefense, really cut well over 50% that came out of defense spending rather than across the board. the other thing is look at what is happening in the world today. should we really be cutting defense? in my view we should be doing the opposite. neil: where would john mccain get the money for that? >> i would reform entitlement. they came out together, the two old irishman 70 fix social security and it will be tough. they raised taxes, they raise retirement age. they made concessions. i think we should be willing to come up with a package that puts social security and medicare back on the path. look, you have to put everything on the table, if you don't put everything on the table the auction site says we will not agree to raising retirement. neil: have adduced in the new style. is all about being honest. that kind of strategy has gotten us nowhere. ted cruz. >> of course all of us remember president dole and president mccain and president romney. those are good men, decent man, but when you don't stand and draw a clear distinction, when you don't stand for principal, emma craddick celebrate. neil: what you think of that? >> it is all fare in politics and senator cruz who i have a cordial relationship with. neil: cordial means cool. >> we are okay. only to be from the after that. >> i see what do that to me, fine, but bob dole? bob dole worked hand in glove with ronald reagan. all these people will claim they are ready republicans. they forget ronald reagan gave amnesty to 3 million americans? do they forget he raised taxes, that he made an agreement with chip o'neil on social security? ronald reagan said 11th commandment is you don't speak ill of your fellow republicans? i don't think, he would recognize the party, but i don't think he would be in lockstep with what is being advocated here. if you're not with me 100% of the time, then you are against me. he says some is with me 80% of the time, i am with it. neil: they are barometer for the time being. three antiestablishment for one of the better term republicans. what do you make of that? >> it is a very active segment of our party, we should be an inclusive party. i will point out nobody has ever on the straw poll winning the nominee of the party. but there is a legitimate place. have to have a more respectful dialogue. i understand their frustration. neil: i think we are going to crush them everywhere, don't think they will have a single nominee anywhere in the country. that might be his opinion, did he mean to think it and not say it? >> i can't speak for him. neil: is that right? >> the tea party is a strong force particularly in primaries. they just won 41% in texas. the opponent was not a very viable candidates to say the least. so i think what our job should be is say look, come in and let's be inclusive, let's have this discussion amongst ourselves but let's not litmus test each other as long as we share principles and values and goals. that is what i want to do with the tea party. does not help me to beat up on them. what i will say if someone criticizes bob dole, there's no reason for that. neil: that is where i want to get a little personal with you. all you have been through, when i hear anyone, and it could be a person on the street questioning their principal with all the hell you have been through, i think i would pass with guys like you. i might go with guys like me, but i just don't think that is the battle. >> senator cruz said that is not what he meant. for me to get into a fight with him is not the way i think the best way. neil: they are all bonded in this respect, what does he mean by that? >> someone like susan collins or others from northeastern states which the constituency is much more centrist than may be in the state of texas or even arizona or south carolina. if we are going to have a majority, we have to have a big ten. there are some who say they're more likely to be in a minority and fewer than have the bigger. neil: guys like chris christie fall like a rock. >> i still think he is viable. a successful republican and a democrat state. neil: med rummy was a successful republican and a democrat. >> i think he got beat for whole lot of reasons, but he was still the nominee of our party, the consensus of the majority of republicans, and so if again if senator cruz thinks there is a better candidate, run a depth. i am a proud reagan republican, i will support a nominee who goes through the process of winning all these primaries, i know how tough it is, i will support that nominee. neil: would you ever want to go through it again? >> i loved every moment of it. there are upsides and downsides, but the honor to travel this country as the nominee of your party, i am a guy fifth from the bottom of his class at the naval academy. neil: whatever happened to that kid? >> i'm the luckiest person you will ever interview in your life. i've had the greatest moments. neil: do you want to run again? >> i'm afraid it is not a viable option. but i do want, for present i don't want to run. i'm considering running again for my senate seat and i will decide early next year. neil: a lot of these guys are the same ones who populate the town hall meetings don't want you to run again. >> i can sense the people of my state. when i travel around, which i do constantly, they like me, and i am very grateful. neil: you are straight shooter. it depends on the day with your kids, doesn't it? sunday the kind of like them and other days i want to sell you. >> this world is more dangerous because of effective leadership by this president. weakness of american power. watch the south china sea, look and see, i pray put in the stop of into eastern ukraine, but i think he is trying to figure out right now if he should or not. first, the fundamental reevaluation and reassessment of vladimir putin. he is not a nice guy. he is an old kgb colonel. tell him i will be more flexib flexible, he missed judges this guy terribly. as long as you understand him for what he is and how he's going to act, let's go back to ronald reagan, peace through strength i'm very worried about the perception and the slaughter in syria, the south china sea, this whole issue in ukraine going on. watch these other opec countries because putin wants to restore abroad. neil: senator, always good to see you. we will have a lot more coming up including a former tea party senatorial candidate who may not agree with everything the good senator is next. and later on this show, drones your doorstep?
