Half of them on lifesupport. This as responses are pouring in from around the world. Well have much more on the developing story. Connell lets get back to the markets for the timebeing. Dow ends the week on high note, which as we say another record close. Nothing crazy. Mark fourth day in a row, sixth straight day of gains. Longest winning streak in four months for the dow. Phil flynn on top of movement from price futures. Price business contributor, in chicago watching oil and gold from the cme. Lori rothman from the floor of the new york stock exchange. A little touchandgo but we got another record. Reporter it was kind of an exhausting session today but if you look at the whole week it was mind blowing. Dow up 2 on the week. S p despite mild losses today up 1 1 2 . No surprise were seeing markets take a breather last couple days. Goes without saying the horrific terrorist attack in nice, france, that was all the talk on the floor. Also impressive that the markets didnt fall further because of that now the tone was also set by Economic Data. June retail sales are pretty good. Stronger than expected with citigroup with better than expected. So important to note that the financial stocks as a group were lower. Hey, walgreens in the news. Looks like this deal that walgreens is trying to pull off to buy rite aid might still be alive. There was concern about this New York Post is reporting that walgreens is talking to the ftc about divesting some of its investments. That is part of this 17 billion deal in the drugstore industry may actually happen. Rite aid got a boost up 2. 4 . Look at winners on broad arquette average. Broad market average. Hershey was down, international paper, but winners, chipolte finally getting a break. It backed off 3 . I got my stats backward. Chipolte was down. Cvs was up. Cbs. Melissa thanks, lori. Phil, how high do you see crude going . Were in very key support area. I thought crude was up despite concerns of terror attack in france and what it might do to oil demand in the short term. We saw numbers out of china really blew away expectations. Not only their gdp beat expectations, refinery rinse for oil were at alltime record high. This came as their production fell 4 yearoveryear, which means china will have to import more oil. So that was bullish. We also saw reports in nigeria of a pipeline outage. That gave us some support. That offset it. Look at gold today. Gold actually pulled down today. Seems like people are moving around their risk. Theyre moving back into the stock market. It was at record high. It is interesting, data from the cftc show dollar long, safe haven play, highest level since june and buying ten year treasury notes, believe it or not at highest level since 2013. So there is still risk on in the market. Theyre just putting it in different place, the notes, not so much in gold. Melissa phil, thank you so much. Connell a little perspective on this stocks lose momentum at end of record week. We got gains we talked about. 10 points on the dow, another alltime high today. Market panel, scott martin, kings view asset management, Fox News Contributor and jack hough from barrons. Scott, there used to be a time with horrible attack in france and market sells off and people focused on that but that doesnt happen anymore. We set another record high, albeit small gains. What do you think of that first of all . Well take it. Your reason is exactly right. It is a shame really these day as terrorist attack overnight doesnt rattle the markets because frankly it has become so commonplace but i will tell you, connell, what i think is supporting equity side of markets is Central Banks around the world. Look what happened recently. Earlier this week, bank of japan, shinzo abe, trillion dollars yen of stimulus. Ecb meeting next week on 21st. That will be more stimulus. And in two weeks a fed meeting turned totally dovish of late. To me, terrorist attacks, slow Economic Data doesnt really matter as long as Central Banks are in play with all the money theyre spreading around. Connell they are giving us all the stimulus, jack, that scott is talking about. We have as he said eternally low Interest Rates were dealing with. The only place where you find return in equities, particularly u. S. Equities, does it worry you . Should we be worried about that . That has been the fact sometime i guess . You definitely should be worried about it. You say theyre giving stimulus. What are they stimulating you to do apart from pouring more money stocks . Connell right. Americans have a lot of debt. You know what they have more of than debt. More savings and bonds together. Connell youre a bubble guy . You think there is a bubble . When we have rates this low. Youre not stimulating economy. Punishing people who have money saved up. That net effect is larger than anybody looking to borrow. This is becoming a drain on the economy at this point but certainly chasing people into risky assets. Melissa travel and Airline Stocks falling today after the horrible attack on french riviera. It marks the third major terrorist attack in france which earns more tourist dollars than any other european country in the last 18 months. Scott, you hate to reduce this to dollars and cents but traders are as they watch it today, thinking about the fact this economy is driven i about tourism rich. You dont know how much people will fly there. Airline stocks really paying the price. Yeah we saw a similar thing, melissa, when we were on couple weeks back after the brexit vote. Travel stocks, whether priceline or frankly u. S. Based Domestic Airlines like delta or jetblue which we like right here because they have just fallen so much, not alone last six months but in the last some weeks. To me the travel area is one where unfortunately these terrible, disgusting attacks or events around the world are possibly opportunities if you missed these stocks over the years because they take a hit in sympathy with bad worldwide events. Melissa jack what do you think about that . Is it opportunity or is this a trend . It is an opportunity but been an opportunity for a long time. This is an industry where investors typically panic at the first sign of profits because they worry airlines will blow out capacity. Were down to four big carriers in the u. S. I think theyre much more restrained. I think profits are here to stay years and years. It might take the next recession before investors come to admit that, that these companies will remain profitable for a while. Melissa scott, do you agree with that . Not so much. If youre looking at some of these stocks, theyre already down. Look at jetblue, delta, some. Airlines they have been already blasted in the last six to eight months. That to me is opportunity to pick up a few percent here and there because i think they have to retrace the move. Connell another big story, ftc making announcement reaching a settlement with herbalife and forcing the company to pay 200 million to consumers harmed by their practices. We know about activist bill ackman, who bet herbalife would be proven pretty much a pyramid scheme. Charlie gasparino has been all over it talking on the network. Scott, what do you make of this . Not a ton. I would probably rather go to the casino to figure out what is going on with herbalife. Ill tell you its a fun one to watch. Any given week there is crazy news that makes it go up four or 5 or down in the other direction. If youre playing this at home, you have to be careful know what kind of water youre wading into which is uncertain and full of a lot of rumor. Connell ackman kind of playing around with all this as charlie reported, jack. What do you make of this whole saga . Only one thing missing from this as investment story, proof that people buy the products because they like to consume them and buy more of them. We know people like to pitch the products to people they know in order to try to make money. Now the company will have to down play this financial return promises it made. It will have to move merchandise to people who want to consume it. Im not sure i dont see a lot of evidence that people love this stuff and want to drink more shakes. Connell need demand for that. Jack, scott, appreciate it. As always, good stuff to start us off. Thanks a lot. Melissa new details on the terror attack in france. A truck mows down dozens of people celebrating bastille day. [gunfire] bill hemmer live what we know about the driver and who he may have been affiliated with. Connell well check in with bill. Defeating isis and other islamic terrorists, retired marine Lieutenant Colonel oliver north with his take what we need to do about this now. Melissa donald trump and Hillary Clinton both responding to the tragedy in different ways. We have to get awfully tough and very, very smart and vigilant. And if we dont, were just not going to have a society, were not going to have a world anymore. This is crazy what is going on. It was an idea. A wild whatif. So scientists went to work. [shouting] connell breaking news of the day out of france, this Terror Strike in this country that has been hit so hard already. See people running for their lives as the truck plowed through a crowd in nice last night. Witnesses recounting the horror of the attack. People were running everywhere, screaming. No one understood whats going on. We just assumed there were fireworks still going off, really shortly after that, i saw people running. We seen People Holding babies, screaming, shouting. It was horrendous. Connell fox news channels bill hemmer has been reporting from nice, france, and he joins us now. Bill, what is the latest there on a friday evening . Connell, it is a bit pasteup okay, this was about the time 24 hours ago fireworks were inding at carnage got underway. Here is what we know about the driver of that truck. Age 31. Mow bouhlel. Es traininged from his wife. The wife was arrested. He has a criminal record. Not very extensive. This what we know about it now. Domestic violence charge goes back three or four years that deals directly with his estranged wife. A charge back in january of this year for a bar fight in nice, france. Back in march, apparently driving a different truck, got into some sort of a Road Accident and a road rage fight came out of that. He was arrested for assault with a weapon. He had a plank of wood. Was hitting someone else with it. He was convicted of charge, connell. Sentenced to six months in jail. Never served jail time because it was his first conviction. That was back in march. Now we do know he was not on a watch list. That is the latest information we have. As now the investigation has not revealed he was organized with any sort of terrorist organization. But again the investigation here into this, rather, it is still early. He rented that 19ton truck. He loaded it up in the hills of nice outside of town here and they have a series of cameras here, connell, 1200 of them. Those 1200 cameras they can follow every move he made. So they know where he first loaded up inside of that, that truck with the weapons and hand grenades in the back. Now how did he get here along this promenade . Because vehicles were banned. There is a report that suggests he got past a Security Check point because he said he was delivering ice cream. Whether thats true or not he got past that Security Check point. And then the carnage began, up and down the black pavement here in the french riviera. Witnesses described him as driving in a way where he could effect and hit as many people as possible. And numbers tonight are staggering. 200 injured, 84 dead. 25 still listed on lifesupport. 50 others in critical condition. Bone fractures are and head injuries, so many of the injured. They came from all over france, connell. They came from all over the world. Earlier today authorities said there were people from all continents, all over the world because of the vacation attraction in midjuly on bastille day, a day of independence here, celebrating the freedom and the independence that france has enjoyed for so long that has been shattered now, three times in 18 months. This being the they are tonight. Did he get any help . We dont know. And also, is there a claim of responsibility . So far tonight the investigation has not shown that, connell. But, again, it is early on, only 24 hours into this. Connell thank you, bill. Bill hemmer live in nice, france, for us. Melissa. Melissa president obama condeming the horrific attack in nice just moments ago. Fox businesss peter barnes is at the white house with the latest on this. Peter . Reporter thats right, melissa. The president at a diplomatic reception here called the attack in france appalling and sickening. He said he called french president Francois Hollande to offer condolences on behalf of the United States to the french people but to reiterate not only the u. S. But the entire world stands with france at this time. But then he turned to politics and he went after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich who was vetted as a possible vicepresident ial candidate for donald trump, who proposed, gingrich proposing earlier this week that muslims in the United States be screened for whether or not they follow sharia law, very strict form of islamic law. Many tenets of which are followed by, is followed by isis. Here is what the president said. In the wake of last nights attacks we have heard more suggestions that all muslims in america be targeted, tested for their beliefs. Some deported or jailed. The very suggestion is repugnant, and affront to everything that we stand for as americans. We can not give in to fear or turn on each other or sacrifice our way of life. Reporter now the white house also responded today to our own 9 11 attack and release of 28 pages of previouslyclassified material from the joint congressional investigation into the 9 11 attacks which uncovered allegations that the saudi government, the saudi royal family, may have been somehow, and officials in the government may have somehow have been helping 9 11 hijackers, either with information or funding or other types of assistance but the administration saying that the release of these 28 pages today, here they are, melissa, actually absolve the saudi government and the royal family from any involvement in the attacks. Members, the members of congress and the administration saying fbi, cia, and other intelligence offices actually investigated these allegations and found them to be unsub tant eighted. Melissa, back to you. Melissa peter barnes, thank you very much for all of that reporting. Connell. Connell it is a larger conversation, melissa, shift in terror tactics. Something bill was get into. The horrific truck, different style, encouraging loan wolves to hit what they describe soft targets. Almost impossible to defend many will tell you. Chuck nash, david sears is here as well, a former navy seal. David, let me start with you, terrorists have said, it is handbook for them, get a car, boy, a huge truck, drive yourself on to a place with crowded people, not much to we can do about it is there or is there . Not so much we can do, do measures, bollards, selfprotection things on tactical to help mitigate the risk at least but there is huge fixation on the tools of destruction, whether guns, ban guns, now do we ban trucks, right. We need to look where the diagram meets and what is the true underlying problem . The person. Connell i want to interrupt you briefly, david, breaking news, information just coming into us from overseas and from turkey. There is a, according to the Prime Minister of turkey, a coup attempt underway at this hour, a coup attempt in turkey. Gunshots were heard in the capitol. The Prime Minister is now saying, this is quote that were getting from the Prime Minister, that plotters will pay a heavy price. Chuck nash, i go to you on this boy, obviously this is a huge development. A coup attempt in turkey. You make of it what . Well this is a major story. Turkey has had a military government several times since kamal set up the modern turkish state. He imbued in the turkish general staff the primacy of maintaining democracy in turkey, maintaining secular country in turkey and not allowing it to slip back the way the ottomans ran the country and what youve seen recently is president erdogan started out as Prime Minister, then made, then he got elected president. He has shifted tremendous power to a more of a president ialtype of a country. He has cracked down significantly on the free press. Hes jailed journalists. Hes cracked down on dissidents. And so i think there are probably elements within the military who are seeing the country slip away very quickly back from a secular society, more toward an islamic society. You have to remember erdogan came from the ak party, the akp which was banned in turkey because of its radical islamist leans. Connell so the military members of course, a lot of this would be speculation early on, may have been, in your view kind of fed up with that, obviously that is what happens when you have a coup, they take it into their own hands. Well watch closely how this plays out. Absolutely. Once he first got into power, he started, he started investigations and brought back in one case i think one of the generals, was 84 years old and he brought him back on to active duty so he could punish him in the courts. He went after all of the people who took part in the previous coup, which happened decades ago. So he was about cleaning out and laying down a line to people, to not even think about doing anything like that again. And it looks like his oppressive things may have triggered just the reverse what he was trying to prevent. Connell very quick, david, just quick thought on this . Have a few seconds. Well have more on later. Absolutely. Reminds me of Muslim Brotherhood taking over in egypt. Melissa right. Egypt government, they were protector, military protectorate of egypt. I think youre seeing same thing possibly playing out in turkey. Connell david and chuck nash, thanks to both of you, developing and breaking story of this coup attempt were hearing about in turkey. Thanks to both of you. Melissa well follow this very closely. Obviously huge implications for the region. You look to nair neighbors in syria and role they played in this conflicts with isis. This is a huge development. Were staying right on top of it. Well be right back. You do all this research on a perfect car, then smash it into a tree. Your Insurance Company raises your rates. Legalzoom. Legal help is here. Melissa all right we have breaking news for you right now about unrest going on in istanbul in turkey. The turkish Prime Minister says that there is a coup attempt. Gunshots were heard in the capitol. Were hearing about aircraft flying low overhead. The Prime Minister said plotters will pay a heavy price. Here is stephen yates, former National Security Affairs Deputy assistant. We have also a department of Homeland Security consultant. They are both here to weigh in. Stephen, let me start with you. Lets lay the background for people because there has been a lot of concern about the connection between the president of turkey, erdogan and his connection to isis and how that plays out in the region. Tell me a little bit about that. Well there has been longstanding concerns about where Prime Minister erdogans leans have been. There was a somewhat permissive Transit Route that went through turkey into the isiscontrolled areas in syria and iraq for some time. Of course there has been a terrible airport tragedy and flow of refugees that have gone through there into europe, destablizing leading to problems there. Prime minister erdogan has been controversial figure in his country and outside. Been in the crosshairs for some time. Not surprising this move would come now. Yeah. Mustafa, International Community is more concerned as he cracks down on journalists. He has been accused of human rights violations. There is talk of election fraud, whether members of his family are buying oil from isis. How do you see this whole thing playing out . This is very concerning, national concerning across the world because he has been escalating, putting journalists in jail, squashing down descent. He has jailed almost 2 how thousand people in turkey. I think military stepping in now may not be a bad thing to stablize turkey which is a key ally for the United States. Melissa stephen, i mean, what does it say about how isiss reach and how much it has moved through borders of other countries and around the world to have a Prime Minister of a country like this, a neighboring country seems to be sympathetic . Some people call him a father of isis. What do you think about all of this . I think he has come dangerously close in his relations with radical movements. Like i said he has been very permissive of that. Turkey is strategically located country. Major, major problem with instability there. As was alluded, we sent through something similar a few years ago outside of the arab spring. Melissa right. Egypt was teetering, somewhat similar circumstance, where it is true that military stepping in would probably be more reassuring than a radicalized Prime Minister clashing with his people. Melissa must tafa, a lot of people make comparison right now what went on with egypt. In chaos that followed arab spring wasnt an improvement. Well i think this may be very different. First, it is very early. We dont know exactly what is going on. We dont know if the coup has actually taken place or it is just an attempt but one thing important for our viewers to understand one part of istanbul is on the asia side and the other side is on the european side. So the location of turkey is so critical to not just the security of europe but the security of the United States. Melissa yeah. Stephen, i mean it does, were obviously here in the u. S. We bring it all back home. This says a lot about instability all around the world. Why are we seeing so much of this right now in your opinion . Are we lacking sort of a Global Leader . Well, i believe that. I think that weakness is provocative. I think america taking a relatively permissive and passive approach to things doesnt mean we go in and take over and try to run other countries but i think that as countries and regions cant feel like they rely on the United States these kind of forces gain steam and letting the chips fall where they may puts us exactly in this risky situation. Melissa talk to me about the dominoes, you know, how they fall in this region as this plays out. Every country has a neighbor and so much of this we have seen spill over into neighboring countries. I mean there are implications, you know, to russia. Talk to me about those issues. Well, the first domino was iraq. When iraq fell and broke apart it started to destablize the region and with turkey, the significance of it is that it is not just the middle east but pouring right into europe and russia has backed the, assads regime and they have launched their airstrikes in syria. And there has been a great challenge in the world on how to keep russia back. And all of it is eminating from this region between turkey, syria and iraq. Melissa stephen, how do you see this playing out . What does it mean to you . Well i think its a major, major litmus do we have what is needed right now to rally countries in europe, nato, as well as allies in the middle east to try to help stablize things like that. Turkey stands alone in some ways. Its a link between these communities. We dont have effective leader at the top and we havent really established stability in europe. I think it is very tumultuous time without much resolution in the months ahead. Melissa with evidence of that, you were both booked to come on this show to talk about something totally different and which have so Many International calamities going on now. You returned to the breaking news instead. We thank you for going were that and talking to us about this. So much going on in the world right now, very distressing. Thank you very much, gentlemen. Connell. Connell anything but a quiet friday. Well continue on the developing story in turkey. More after this short break. Keep it here. Melissa we have breaking news right now. Gunshots heard in the capitol city of turkey. The turkish Prime Minister says there is a coup attempt after Prime Minister saying this is an illegal action by military group. Were staying on top of the story right now. Connell. Connell this is all developing very, very quickly. We have Lieutenant Colonel oliver north with us, the host of war stories and fox news military analyst and counterterrorism coordinator in the reagan administration. Colonel north, we know a limited amount. We know as melissa, the Prime Minister told us there is attempted coup underway. There are all other kinds of reports and claims that we have not been able to confirm just yet but what are your thoughts on the importance strategically and geographically of turkey when there is attempted coup taking place . Talk about why turkey is really important. Not just where it sits in the world geographically and our nato ally in that part of the world. Right now turkey stands between the deal being done by iran and russia and we need them. Lets put it no other way. The problem is of course erdogan came late to the game of fighting isis. He became power as member of the Muslim Brotherhood. This man used to belong to the organization. He let isis run rampant crossborder with foreign fighters. He did very little unvery recently to deal with this problem. On top of it, when he came to power he locked up all kinds of senior officers. Fired the general staff and left the military kind of foundering. He of course is totally opposed to some of the kurds we have been working with inside of syria. So he is not set himself up well for survival. The army has long been, all the way back to the 1920s, has been the power inside of turkey just like it was in egypt. What we dont want to do, this administration, knowing their penchant for dumping people like mubarak and not talking to elsisi who took over and elected president in cairo, we cant afford to keep doing that and alienating people we need to working with. Turkey ought to be working closely with us along with other sunni powers in the region to deal with the problem of isis. In the aftermath of the syrian civil war, connell, there will have to be some kind of a sunni force which we can work and the kurds in terms of dealing with whats going to happen to syria. Is it going to remain a state or break up into pieces . We have to deal with the kurds. Theyre after their own homeland. You have to deal with the fact that iraq is essentially today a sunni stan, and a shiastan and kurdistan. Not good to have a coup in the middle of it. Connell we saw some pictures coming through to us from the streets of turkey and Turkish Television piped through our colleagues and partners at sky news there. Youre getting an idea, seeing a tank in the street. Obviously an interview with the gentleman on the left side of your screen there as they do their own analysis of this. President erdogan, colonel north, is it in our interests, United States interest to have him remove from power . We dont know who would replace him. Were ahead of ourselves with this story breaking but is it an ally . What is it in the United States interest when it comes to erdogan . Connell, good question. He came let helping us with the isis problem and syrian civil war. He came to us early on after the civil war started to take major steps against assad. We didnt do it. We didnt allow him to go back and do it. They came late to the game. We couldnt use the Incirlik Air Base we built in turkey until a few months ago. He not up until recently figured it out. He apparently figured it out. The problem turkey is not able to deal with the isis problem at home. They killed hundreds and hundreds of people all over the country. We report on terrible event just like what happened in nice. The fact is isis carrying out an attack a day somewhere in the world. A lot of it is in turkey. Just doesnt make the news. Connell latest newsflash coming across the Turkish Military taking over government. A claim doesnt mean reality. That doesnt mean that the claim is being made by the members of the Turkish Military. This is developing situation. The Prime Minister characterized as attempted coup. Do you know anything, colonel north about leadership of kurdish military, what type of people are carrying this out, what their interests might be . I do know a number of people in turkey. I know americans in turkey. I know folks that have been out there for some time. I know a good number current and former, Senior Intelligence military officers out there. Before you and i went live, connell, i was on the phone trying to get more information myself. We dont know a lot. The bottom line you dont need chaos in turkey, whatever outcome of this attempted coup or real coup, we dont need an opponent operating from the top of the government in turkey. Connell right. And especially, i know you said it wasnt all about geography, but that is a certain part of it, right . Well it is. In fact the turks have told us now for literally a year, what theyre concerned about, most of all, is the deal that is being done between the russians, putin and the ayatollahs in tehran. They know thats whats happening. They hate shiites. They dont call them iranians. They call them persians. What iran has been after opening up land corridor goes between the border of iran and iraq to the border of syria. They are about keeping assad in power. Isis is lording over the fact only ones standing up for sunnis in that part of the world. Erdogan knew that. It prompted him to come late to the party but he finally got here. Connell colonel north, terrific on the spot to have terrific insight from you. We learned a lot. Well continue to follow the thank you, sir. Melissa he really did a lot to illuminate that situation. Great to have him standing by. A lot going on. Well have more on the developing story after the break. The white house just responding now to the situation in turkey. Y life. So when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my longterm control medicine. I talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment with breo. Oncedaily breo prevents asthma symptoms. Breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Breo wont replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Turkeys military seizing control, to reestablish constitutional order. Although we have to warn there are all kinds of reports who is in charge right now and it is very unclear. This is all going on in turkey. The white house now responding. Lets go to peter barnes. Peter, what are they saying there . Reporter nothing from the white house yet, melissa. We asked the white house for comment on this i think theyre just learning about it as we all are. They have not yet put out a formal response but obviously this is a very difficult and delegate situation for the Obama Administration and all administrations given the, our alliance, military alliance with turkey and fighting insurgents in the middle east and on the one hand, our, us in alliance with the kurds in some of these fights but kurdish rebels, the turks fighting with kurdish roesch bells who want to secede from part of turkey at same time. This has always been a very delicate balancing act for every administration. I can tell you as i was coming up from our booth here in the at white house there was a Turkish Military spokesperson who said that all existing alliances and relationships would be main takenned by a military government if, in fact a coup had taken place. I was just, as i was walking up just looking and colonel north is right. Military basically been in charge of this country, for 100 years. This is the fourth coup since 1960. Melissa to add a little more color, if you know anything about the history, the military is thought to be protector of democracy as it is in turkey. As we look at the coup, they have been outraged on things they have seen president erdogan, cracking down on journalists, accused electoral fraud, human rights, and erdogan recently a u. S. Ally, and the country an ally but very complicated. Thanks for soring through so much of that. A lot to do there. Thank you. Reporter you bet. Connell in terms of all the unrest in turkey, by the way many of the pictures we show you, some are coming out of ankara, and some in istanbul seem quieter. This is live look at istanbul which is west of ankara. It is ankara where the military have the headquarters. Many claims from the Turkish Military saying they have been taking control of country are out of ainge aca. Tanks in the screen. Context tough to get you. Well try to do that coming up if we can. Melissa as you remember, before we looking at this attack weve seen in france, not too long ago, was the attack from radical jihad, radical islamist there in turkey. Connell right. Melissa in istanbul. This is a seen where we have seen a lot of this battle back and forth. Connell the streets and highway underneath the overpass we look at appear to be fairly routine. Traffic is moving quite slowly. Whereas the contrast quite striking when you go to ankara, you see a tank in the middle of the streets. That is military headquarters. This is still photo as we see a car cuttings over into the middle of the road. The context to some of these photos would be better served if we show you, were starting to do that now. Some of the maps, this is larger maps of bridges that have been shut down. When we heard from the Prime Minister earlier, he talked about lowflying planes and bridges being shut down. Military spokespeople coming out of ankara claiming to have taken control of the country. So again, aping can ankara te east of istanbul. Reports of a coup in major country overseas in turkey. Big story. Melissa Turkeys Armed forces toppled, the civilian government and seized power. This is what the wall street journal is reporting right now. An official at the militarys ankara headquarters is saying adding that the country would abide by all International Commitments and agreements. Turkish armed forces in order to reestablish constitutional order, democracy and freedomss rule of law, safety and security of the turkish nation and state has taken all over all of government responsibility. This is what the officer said. Are we going to Sebastian Gorka or no . Connell theyre claiming they have taken control of the country essentially. They have the power. That is statement an officer read to them or read to officials overseas. As i said earlier, a claim youve taken, doesnt necessarily mean youve taken it over. When you are so early in a situation like this, probably best to get confirmation from officials over there which is very difficult to do right now. Melissa lets go to Sebastian Gorka, threat of Knowledge Group chairman. Also the author of, defeating jihad. Sebastian, thank you so much for joining us. What do you make of the situation . This is a geostrategic event. This is very, very, significant. Turkey has the Largest Military of the european nato allies. It is a key player in terms of International Affairs when it comes to the middle east. If you think of the isis fighters that have been transitioning across the turkish border, you think about the kurdish issue, this, this is incredible. This is historic. And lets really be honest about who is to blame for this. The person who will probably get the rightful blame for this is erdogan, the head of state of turkey. This is man who under his premiership dismantling the legacy of ataturk, created modern functioning secular turkish state. He played footsie under the table with islamists. He facilitated movement of isis fighters across the border and the military have had enough. This is a man who thought he could cow those in uniform. He arrested the former chairman of the joint chiefs in turkey on completely trumped up terrorism charges, to, i know, fire a shot across the bow of the military to say, im in charge now. Im going to islammize this country. Guess what, mr. Erdogan . The men in uniform seem to have a different idea about the future of this geostrategically important nation and now they have taken action. Melissa sebastian this, is a critical moment. You know, how the rest of the world responds in these situations makes such a difference. We saw that you know with the arab spring and what kind of support, like you say the military is on the side of basically democracy and human rights as opposed to what erdogan has been doing recently. What is the proper response . No look, it is very impressive that the events are completely fresh but already, whoever is taking control is controlling the narrative. They have made a very important statement that you have repeated twice, that all treaty obligations, all alliance partnerships, will stand. This isnt about anarchy. This isnt about one mans dream, according to this statement. Its about the need to get turkey back into the club of normal state. Back into being an ally. Because, look, turkey was helping isis. Turkey was buying oil from isis. This is a nato nation. It had to stop. And if erdogan wasnt going to stop it somebody else was going to stop it. So early days, we have to be super cautious. There is a rule of warfare, all initial reports from the battlefield are wrong. Melissa yeah. So that, you got to be cautious here. But, the way, those photographs you were showing just now from ankara, they dont show chaos. This could be very positive event pushing back on islamist narrative. Melissa that is what i was getting back to supporting this government in terms of what it means for the United States. That is exactly what i was asking. As we go in, if theyre talking about honoring agreements turkey is a country was an ally to the u. S. And is essential in the region, based on all of the enemies that are surrounding in the Neighborhood Talk about being cautious but at the same time for u. S. Interests do we want to support the military . Look, this administration, dissed one of the most important people in the middle east after arab spring. Melissa right. President elsisi. They turned their back on biggest arab nation in the world, fighting their own fight against isis branch isis. Who knows what the administration will do. We have to be cautious because we dont know exactly who is behind this or how theyre doing it. If it is really about the a military coup, to bring back stability and second cue lairty, as soon as western allies of turkey, say we have problems with mr. Erdogan and maybe you should be recognized as people bringing balance back to turkey, but im not going to hold my breath on president obama being the person who delivers that message. Melissa i mean, it just, makes you think about, you know, there was a glimmer of hope in iran at one point in time. During arab spring looked like a possibility from change of the hardline government. That is another opportunity so many people said was squandered, sitting back and waiting, being cautious in retrospect. Look at these opportunities that go by, could this be an opportunity for the u. S. . Possibly, yeah, it could be an amazing opportunity. So, you know, i was in turkey in the 1980s for the first time and everywhere you saw the legacy of ataturk. You saw statues, paintings, museums. I went back there recently a couple years ago. It was gone. Erdogans, erdogans Muslim Brotherhoodesque ideology almost wiped the secular champion of turkey out of the history books. So if we can come back to that age where it was a good ally, it was a solid nato ally, it was interested in changing same values we did in terms of National Security and international relations, that could be enormously beneficial to all of us especially given the rise of isis. Melissa i mean, place this in context of Everything Else that we have going on in this world. Im sure so many viewers out there right now are saying another country, another problem, another place . This is a essential in all of these different battles were having in the region, whether its, you know, what our relationship is like going with iran Going Forward or this terrible problem we have now. With this extremist ideology that erdogan was embrace lets take protocol out of equation. There in terms of geopolitics, turkey, russia, germany, france and britain. Thats it. This is one of the biggies. This is one of the giant jigsaw pieces of the your asia land mass. Deirdre okay. Im sorry to interrupt you. Secretary of state john kerry we believe is addressing this situation. We want to listen in to what he is saying. U. S. Secretary of state willing to engage too much with commenting on the situation in turkey. He said that he didnt know too much about it but he did say that hoped that peace and continuity would continue in turkey. He is waiting to be briefed on very fast moving situation in which an army group in turkey it will not excuse it in our eyes. We saw what happened when people said the same thing about isil for a period of time. Oh, dont worry, theyre just a force against assad, and down the road we can take them on. Well, they became more than just a force. I think it is important for the United States, russia, the entire coalition of issg to stand up against terrorism. Connell all right. So secretary kerry moved on to other topics. I think we may have missed additional comments on turkey. To recap what we know, there is an attempted coup, that is what we can call it right now in turkey. The military claims it seized power. Well follow it. Difficult to get information with the crackdown in the plead yaw. That has to be taken into account media. Melissa well take it and hand it over to risk reward which starts right now. Deirdre violence erupting in turkey. A coup, attempted one. This is risk reward. Im deirdre bolton. Gunshots heard in the turkish capital ankara. In istanbul, Turkish Forces blocked two major bridges over the bosporus river. Fox Business Reporter peter barnes is with me. Peter, you gave me the amazing statistic, that this is the fourth coup, if were counting since 1960. Seems that erdogan recently dismissed his handpicked prime
