study professor it's good to have you on the show you were study is based and i think this is key here on a new method of measuring ocean temperature what what is so different here. thank you for having me so yes ocean warming has been measured for a few decades now using ocean temperature direct measurement of temperature in new sion and there was some discrepancy city idea with that is that he was can we find another method to estimate that independently and have going to check on the numbers that we get so that we have a more accurate if you will way of measuring what's happening with the temperature in the oceans and what do we do with that information i mean can we talk about immediate consequences. so it's not that it's more accurate is what is important science should have different estimates of the same thing and sue we have two methods now that really couldn't berge towards one number and that number is larger than what we think it was before. so the implications well if the ocean has warmed more than we thought that means the earth has one more than we thought and the implication of that is that the earth is more sensitive to the experts in the commissions and in fact. it is this you know your study in the findings that you were publishing i mean it's only like another alarm needs to be sailed and so did it it sounds like that things are actually worse than we expected is that how you would describe the situation so we've we've known that the ocean has warmed a lot and we know that the aleutian takes up more than ninety percent of the global warming the atmosphere just accounting for about one percent the question was really how much exactly and you're right it's more it's warming more than we thought and had that has implication and how the way forward how we want to move forward if we want to stay if you want to keep our temperature below one point five or two degrees right on the ball and professor before we run on something we just ask you do you think the findings of your study did should they impact the paris climate agreement does that need to be changed at all so what it does compared to the first agreement or the one point five degree report that just came out from the i.p.c.c. is that he didn't think those scenarios for a possible two possible but what he does is that it makes it harder to get there so basically what are protesting what they see as the tech giants lenient treatment of executives accused of sexual misconduct employees stage walkouts in new york dublin london tokyo and singapore last week google's c.e.o. disclosed that the company and fired forty eight employees including thirteen senior executives for sexual harassment in recent years he also apologized for the company's past actions the you know you don't expect this to be going on at a company like google but what exactly are these google employees are they fed up with well they're frustrated with what they're describing as a culture of complicity in sexual harassment and also protection for people accused of it and what's brought this all out into the open why these people are marching today because of an article last week in the new york times and it reported that google paid to the founder of android android software a man named andy rubin and nineteen million dollars severance package when he was accused of sexual harassment and the article reported that google paid this money just spot finding the claims against team as credible he of course denies these and the articles reported that there were similar cases where google has been making similar payments and basically that's why these employees are. staging mass walkouts out of their offices today as the one sign it said what do i do a google i work hard every day the company can afford these nineteen million dollar payouts to executives who harass my coworkers with ninety million dollars at the company what do the employees what concrete measures do they want to see ok so they want to what's called for and this is designed to stop people from taking their complaints public they want to clear a process for reporting sexual harassment anonymously insightfully at google they want the company to create a transparency report around sexual harassment to make that public they want a possible managerial restructure and they want an employee to sit on the company's board and they also want google to commit to equal pay for men and with this nondisclosure clause the. talked about recently i mean it's coming under fire yet again do you think our perception of google. should change or is it changing because in this it's hard to say i mean old habits die hard because what do you do when you when you want to find something out you log on to google and that's why over the past twenty years it's become so powerful and one of the world's most valuable companies because of us and i'll die but it's starting to appear that some of the country companies around one hundred thousand employees are starting to question whether its commitment to do evil is genuine or decent course isn't confined to google we have to point that out the tech industry in general generally has a problem with an imbalance of men and women far more men we can take then women do and that contributes to what a lot of people in silicon valley describe
