our panel. jayar jackson. >> i hope your unraveling theory isn't disastrous. >> cenk: i hope i'm wrong about it. on satellite, america how are you, my friend. >> hey, cenk, good, and you? >> cenk: you look sharp man you look much sharper than us. >> i overdressed. >> cenk: pleasant your heart you look fantastic. leading the ship, the cara santa maria. that sounds like the captain of a ship. >> i get that. early today we got our first glimpse of zorkar z r tsarnaev. he's being indicted on 30 charges, including the death of two adults one child at the bombing and an mit police officer. he came to the federal courthouse today and submitted a plea of not guilty. let's take a look. >> supported by heavily armed guards tsarnaev arrived at the courthouse inside a white van. the accused boston bomber stood before a judge on wednesday slapped with a total of 30 charges. with his arm in a cast, he plead not guilty to all counts includes using a weapon of mass destruction. in attendance some of the victims from that horrific day when bombs tragically interrupted the boston marathon. the attack killed three people and injuring 263 others. and tsarnaev had supporters outside of the courthouse. his brother was killed after a high-police-speed police chase. >> so it seems to be the case that there were many many kind of not supporters, i should say many victims advocate advocates families of the victims over 250 people were injured in the boston bombing, many who lost their limbs, and many came to the courthouse to watch tsarnaev put in his plea. >> i want to see who changed their lives forgive. >> they lost their legs in the bombings. they don't see themselves as victims but they want tsarnaev to pay. >> if you had an opportunity to speak to him directly, what would you say? >> probably wouldn't do too much talking with him. i probably helped-- >> moving forward what is the primary thing that gets you through it. >> just getting better. i wanted more than anything to just stand up on two feet. >> cenk: oh man seeing that is really tough right? but there was also, cara about a dozen tsarnaev supporters out there. >> yes. >> cenk: this is crazy. i understand that some were old friends from high school. >> he does have friends and family. >> cenk: i get that, and his sisters were there. >> and his mother and father, they told cnn that they're watching or maybe it was abc that they're watching from their home country in russia. >> cenk: yes, i have two notes on that. his friends i get. they're his friends. they'll stick by him whatever. this girlfriend, this 23-year-old lacy buckley came in all the way from the state of washington and there were others who don't know him at all, and they had signs up like free dhor. is there a conspiracy theory that he's innocent? >> it seems like, so, tsarnaev, it seems to be the case. he has a public defender. that's going to be difficult. he has a public defender. most people speculating right now are saying her only real plan is to get the death penalty off 9 table. but i'm wondering if part of the defense since they did submit a plea of not guilty is going to have something to do with his brother, being under the thumb of his brother his brother being the mastermind, and he was coerced to be involved in this way. his brother is never going to stand trial. he died. >> cenk: they got to go with that. if they don't go with that, they're totally screwed. but what is not going to help him is what he scribbled in the boat. he wrote quote i don't like killing innocent people. i can't stand to see such evil go unpunished. we muslimed are one body. you hurt one you hurt us all. ,that would appear to be a confession. nice knowing you. >> i mean, in thinking that he was coerced, he was an accomplice as a young kid i'm the least of the lawyerly ones here but massachusetts law, i would assume, there is plenty of murder cases where there is just someone just driving maybe they didn't pull the trialer and if it's a simple case like a gun murder, if you're an accomplice in a crime they charge you the same level. you don't have to be the one to do it. >> cenk: yes driving the go away car maybe you didn't even know it, they charge you at the same level. if you planted bombs where. 263 people were hurt, people were killed, etc. showing up there in muslim garb as the reporters called it, that doesn't do muslims any favors. >> this is not painting a good picture for that group of people. he's obviously speaking out. he obviously committed allegedly committed. >> cenk: he obviously allegedly committed-- >> he obviously allegedly committed these horrible crimes for something. you just read the quote on the side of the boat. he was feeling passionately about defending something that had to do with his religion, and i think deeper it had to do with his country and culture. speaking to that, if you were if you remember the older brother who is not going to be able to stand trial, a friend of his was recently killed--i think it was may--i've got it here, may 22, 22, 2013. it's very murky, the details of this. but there was a standoff with the fbi. apparently or allegedly there was no weapon. he didn't have a knife. he didn't have a gun. but he was killed in gunfire. there were two massachusetts police present. they were just there to interview him. and try and learn more about the bombings. some how he ended up dead, and nobody is going to investigate. >> cenk: on the tsarnaev thing it is a weird story right? and apparently tsarnaev came into court today and had a russian accent. he never had a russian accent. he grew up here. >> he's much younger than his older brother. >> cenk: super weird. there are issues of, wow i wonder what happened. but with with eli's case, there are issues. there are conflicting reports that he had a knife then he didn't have a knife. they said there were six cops and now maybe there were seven authorities. it's been over a month they haven't said how they killed him, why they killed him isn't that outrageous? >> i remember that story now and i hadn't thought about it for a while. i thought when we saw the headlines there was going to be reporting on it, but we really haven't heard anything. if it's just the fbi and this other person, the fbi doesn't really want to talk about it, we might not hear a lot about it. the deep question that everyone wants to know is why did he do it if he did it, which people assume that did he. he did. you mention the semi confession in the boat, but the fact is i don't think we'll see dramatic courtroom confession. i think we'll zoo a trial and the media is going to be bummed. they would like nothing better than a great media trial. but i don't think this is going to be the one and i would be shocked if this ever proceeded very far. i think as was mentioned north you it's trying to get the death penalty off the table and then they'll come to some agreement. that's my hunch. >> nancy grace must be thinking, come on, don't plead. don't plead. give me a trial. >> i was going to ask if it does go to trial is he going to get a fair trial if they keep this in boston? >> cenk: that's interesting. i never quite believed that. i think if you believe in a jury trial, you trust the jury no matter where they are right? if you don't trust them-- >> it's such a resonant event for that city, and it will be hard to find someone in boston who never heard of it. >> cenk: go ahead. >> they had that first world trade center bombing in new york city, and you don't hear about trials being moved to other towns any more. i don't think judges don't buy that any more. >> cenk: okay, you heard of it, does that make you bias? >> no. >> cenk: and i think our jury isn't stupid enough to say okay, i hated that bombing so i will convict anyone they put in front of me. they have to determine that it was the guy who did the bombing if it is, give him the sentence. >> but is he on is that what he's going to be on trial for? you're the one who is going the one who did the bombing and you were the guy bleeding in the boat? is that what the defense is going to say? or was he was involved, but he didn't do it, he was coerced and his brother had so much power. >> cenk: thethe ibrahim case, the fbi has to tell us what happened. there have been 150 shootings by the fbi and the fbi said all from justified. in this case the kid--and the fbi changed their story saying he had no weapon. just because he was connected to guys we didn't like doesn't mean we get to execute them on the spot. they have to tell us why in the world in the middle of an interrogation they shot this guy. it's not whether you like him or not, it's about rule of law. when we come back we'll tell but climate change, and yes my great unraveling theories. if you believe in state's rights but still support the drug war you must be high. >> "viewpoint" digs deep into the issues of the day. >> do you think there is any chance we'll ever hear the president even say the word "carbon tax"? >> with an opened mind... >> has the time finally come for real immigration reform? >> ...and a distinctly satirical point of view. >> but you mentioned great leadership so i want to talk about donald rumsfeld. >> (laughter) >> cutting throught the clutter of today's top stories. >> this is the savior of the republican party? that wasn't just a storm. that was a storm followed by a very, very cold--with the hurricane, and then a nor'easter that combined to cause horrible flooding horrible damage to the eastern seaboard. we're starting to see these things happening in chunks. what happens when florida has a terrible hurricane that strikes, and then multiple tornadoes that come out of that. like in japan there's is never an earthquake. there is never a tsunami. how about if we throw hurricanes on top of that. >> cenk: just talking about the unraveling. yesterday i read a canada, i don't know about the 18 different possibilities of disasters which two or three are going to happen at the same time. i'm not saying that it's definitely going to happen, but i think there is a chance that we look at the world five years from now or 12 years from now and we say, oh my god i don't know what happened but i'm worried about safety for everybody. >> cara, do you remember sandy no i don't remember sandy any more. it was just last year. just late last year. no one remembers it any more. nobody remembers that that's what happened. no one remembers the tornadoes that hit. >> do you remember chantal. >> cenk: i don't remember chantal. >> that was wednesday. >> cenk: now eric, that goes to your expertise eric bohlert from media matters. to connect the dots the media would have to tell them. >> right. >> cenk: how do you think the media is reacting to all of this? >> there would have to be context, but no, the way the media cycle works nothing is connected. everything just happens independently. everything happens in a silo. the good news, the bad news, that's one of the things that the press does so poorly is connect the dots. specifically on climate change you know, we waste probably about ten years in this country with the he said-she said debate about climate change. you know, there were sort of these climate denier kooks. they were given fair time because nobody didn't want to be biased and leave anybody out of the discussion. we wasted a decade giving these people national platform when they didn't deserve one. there is a consensus now within the mainstream press that you don't need to include a climate denier quote when you write an article about catastrophic theories or hypothesises that we face or clear evidence after clear evidence. but it muddied the waters. >> what do you consider the mainstream press? with you have patrick michael who is still continuing to spout this nonsense. i have a video here. he was on cnn earlier this year talking about how none of this is linked to climate change. let's take a look at that. >> the ocean is warmer than it was 40 years ago. you would think everything else being equal that that would result in the increase of hurricane frequency or power. that's one thing we can look at to see if its happening. i have an illustration that i gave over there that shows something called the accumulateed cyclone energy beginning in 1972, that's when satellites began to go up so we can sense all the hurricanes. and it shows no change between 1972 and now. in fact, if you look at the data, the recent years are at or near the lowest value for hurricane energy in the entire records. >> cenk: so this is so frustrating. i mean, there is an expert on cnn who says between 1998 and 2008 we would have a significant cooling trend, and it turns out, yikes, there is no cooling trend. it was some of the hottest years on record. and he's still on tv. >> but nobody calls him out either. >> well, we do. you know, this guy has been doing it for a quarter of a century. we have a recent post up just debunking, as you mentioned we're going to have a cooling trend. i bet you that the water temperatures don't go up. all of this stuff is wrong. he gets paid to be wrong. it's weird right-wing welfare. you're paid to be wrong. you get to be associated with the cato institute and you get to be on cnn, and nothing that you say in your expertise is right ever. that's an example of how the conservative movement, how these think tanks, these moneyed interests muddy the debate, specifically on climate change. this is someone who is paid to be wrong and paid to go on tv to be wrong and the fact that he's wrong all the time, that's sort of the job description and classic misinformation. >> cenk: one last thing on this before we leave this topic. i get that cato institute is funded by these giant corporations so they have these invested interests in lying. but i don't understand the media. >> yes yes. >> cenk: how does that dynamic work where the media is some how verboten to connect the hurricane, the drought, the wildfires, why who is the editor or executive director of cnn who says, don't say that, you're not allowed to say that? >> right, it's this ingrained fear of the liberal media bias charge. media has written about all of this drastic weather events, all these catastrophic weather events whether it's drought, firefighters hurricanes, blizzards. climate change is almost never mentioned as a context. never a sentence or paragraph this might be why it's happening. meteorologists never talk about this topic. they're afraid they're going to be attacked. they are afraid they're being biased that they're adding a political element to a story. they might be because it's part of the story. you need to include it. climate change has widespread drastic implications for our media culture and for the globe obviously. it needs to be part of news stories and the press cannot be too timid if we include that we'll get yelled at or fox news will attack us or conservative bloggers will go after us. it's part of the story just report it. >> cenk: now when we come back we've got another story of walmart. this time washington, d.c. is taking them on, and are they actually robbing tax payers. i lied. we don't have one amazing fact today. we have two amazing facts. the second amazing fact is involved in this story. you're going to be telling your friends about it, guaranteed. when we come back. guarantee individuals working for corporations that make $1 billion in profit and that have stores that are larger than 75,000 square feet will be guaranteed a minimum of $12.50 an hour as a starting wage. that is significantly higher than the federal minimum wage or the district's minimum wage which is $8.25. you know what, walmart is not very happy about this. in fact, as they are threatening to halt construction on three of their planned stores. let's take a look. >> walmart has all the necessities you need loaded in one store. >> but as of today the district will have three less the number of walmart stores set ho open in the district has been cut in half from six down to three because of the district's own doing. >> that kind of disappointing you know thinking that there will be one opening and you know, all of a sudden finding out there won't be one opening. >> reporter: legislation requires big box stores like walmart to start their employee salaries at $12.50 above the $8.50 wage. because of that walmart is pulling the plug on the building of three walmarts. >> here is the issue walmart is threatening to pull these three stores which is a threat of 900 jobs. it's a threat where they used in new york, in chicago and trying to allow the employees living above the poverty line, and tension from walmart lobbyists tension on policies makers, prevented them from going through with it. >> cenk: yes, so it's an interesting question, right. you're going to create some jobs. then you have these massive subsidies that go to walmart. i'm not sure how that really winds up for the community. so for example currently walmart pays its employees 28% less on average than other large retailers, even as it reaps huge rewards, $450 billion a year in sales. that puts a lot of costs on us. by the way, costco workers actually make $21.96. that could be the third amazing fact of the day. costco people make nearly $22 an hour. >> that's on average. we're talking about walmart paying their employees $8.50 $8.25. they're threatening to pull stores because the request to increase minimum wage of $4 an hour. speak everything subsidies. i don't think people realize how much the taxpayer are subsidizing this massive corporation that makes $450 billion in profits a year. >> cenk: yep yep. >> sales. yes. congressional report that found that the workforce of a single walmart store, we're talking about one store here consumes roughly $1 million in public health benefits every year relying on safety net programs like medicaid, food stamps, school lunch and housing assistance to survive. truth be told this is very difficult information to come by and some other independent analysis shows that could be closer to $2 million. for a single store. >> cenk: so look, right wingers paint comey liberals against stores like walmart. they bring jobs. but it might not. first of all we're subsidizing. if you believe in the free market why would you subsidize a corporation that makes a ton of money. >> we're talking about the subsidizing in that the individuals who work in the store have to use food stamps and welfare programs. but we're subsidizing the store itself. this is old because it's very difficult to find this information, but they issued a report that found that walmart workers defense on public programs in california such as medical and food stamps cost taxpayers $86 million annually. nationwide this would be close to $2 billion annually. now that's just the individual workers. they make so little money that they have to rely on assistance that is taking money out of the pockets of taxpayers. walmart itself gets government subsidies. this is an important thing to know. this is a two-prong approach to ripping us off. >> cenk: and oftentimes they'll get subsidies to move into a town tax breaks, etc. but that's not being pro business. how about the businesses of the mom and pop stores that they crush on the way because they didn't get a $1 million tax break. >> there is so much wrong with this, and part of it is the media coverage. they pass a report and say the city did this to themselves. they passed a living wage bill and one city stepped away. costco pays its employees three times what walmart pays. there are other big box retailers in washington, d.c. they're going to adjust they're going to be fine. they're not packing up and leaving. it's only walmart that has this sort of bully approach. and then you know on fox news eric bowling was saying if they increase their wages 50% they're going wipe out all their profits, you know, walmart had $16 billion in profits. i'm pretty sure increasing their salary wages from $8 to $12 they're going to do fine. costco is doing fine paying their employees $20 an hour. this is about walmart. this is not the district of columbia who shot them in the foot. we've seen that coverage in the last couple of--particularly today. how could the city council do this they're so dumb. they're not. this is what they want to reflect in their community and one company has a problem with it. >> we saw this in the news report. the stand off comes between this community and those helping the community. i don't blame the woman in that news report. >> cenk: it might as well been an ad. >> yeah, i can't believe they did this, not walmart not this corporation is looking to take you, but i can't believe the city is doing this to us and running this nice company because she is going to benefit directly herself. when there is so much poverty, you're in complete poverty or underneath the poverty line, you think i would rather be near than completely. i'll take that $850 an hour. >> then you look at walmart and it's all smoking mirrors. i can forward to buy things at walmart. it's a company good for me and my community ignoring that walmart refuses to pay overtime to its employees. it doesn't give benefits, and they don't pay them the minimum amount of money to earn a living wage. on top of that. more smoking mirrors walmart makes all sorts of political donations here. walmart political action committee, yes they have their own pac they spent more than $2 million influencing federal elections in the three of the last five election cycle. the wall tan family who owns over half of the common stock spent more than $1.3 million on federal elections last year along with hundreds of thousands more at the state and local level. that's on top of the money that walmart's pac put in these federal elections. >> cenk: that's how big business crushes small business. crushes their competition. and they buy off our corrupt applications because of our corrupt political system. then they give these unnatural advantages to these giant corporations. what is the result of this? amazing fact number three of today, it's one of my favorite facts of all time. the walton family has six heirs now. sam walton was the founder. six heirs now worth $89.5 billion in 2010. the same as the bottom 41.5% of the u.s. families combined according to josh bivens of the economic political institute that's $48.8 million households in total. that's households combined. those six walmart heirs are worth more than 100 million americans. >> almost half of the people living in this country. >> cenk: and then as eric pointed out fox news will go on the air and say oh, they'll go bankrupt, these poor walmart guys. they'll go bankrupt. if they pay a living wage. >> what can you do with that much money? >> one last point. so one other point they're not going to build these three stores. if this is such a catastrophe to their business models why are they keeping the other three stores open. if this is going to wipe them out, why are they not closing down all six stores. this is bullying and doesn't reflect what the implications on one of the world's largest companies. >> target, costco, this applies to them as well. none of them are closing up shop. and by face it she's another blond on fox who says what everyone else says on fox. i don't think people are going to be that interested. the other couple of interesting things that happened, gretchen carlson now gets bumped up. apparently she'll have her own show on fox. the hosts of fox and friends which were famously spoofed on saturday night live for not getting the date right. they make up all these things in the morning. that's now being rewarded and elevated gretchen will have her own show. it's the bottom feeding happening. you get everything wrong in the morning, you get with regarded, now she'll get everything wrong at noon or 1:00 p.m. or wherever they're going to give her a show. it's an interesting mix. but i think she's going to be way less interesting on fox. she's going to be saying what everyone else says. they don't even have guests on fox and friends who will disagree with what she says. she'll get a nice paycheck but her schtick as it were, was when she got to yell at
