Right now there are millions of people who have not been so fortunate. He was trying to help people. The government did not like that. That story makes me so mad. All right were going to truck about that on tonights show as well. Its go time. President obama had a press conference today. He wanted to talk about the debt ceiling and about the gun control a little bit. He has positive words that are encouraging for those of us who believe he should fight harder. Lets listen. Obama i want to be clear about this. The debt cereal something not a question of authorizing more spending. Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that congress has already committed to. The issue here is whether or not america pays its bills. We are not a debtdeep nation. Cenk i like it. Now normally i say it should have been stronger, but it was pretty strong and he made his point very good. It continues. Obama this is not an implicatedcomplicateed subject. You dont go out to dinner, eat all your want, and then leave without paying the check. If you do, youre breaking the law. And congress should think about it the same way that the American People do. They spent it in tax cuts for billionaires and millionaires, they spent it in the iraq war afghanistan, the great majority of this money was spent by george w. Bush. You have every reason to feel that way although i think the way he handled the fiscal cliff was a departurei think he bent over a little bit less than he has in the past in terms of going back on what he said he was going to do. He got americans towealthy americans to pay more in taxes. Not the specific 250,000, quarter of a million. When we came to the socalled fiscal cliff there was a question that the American People had to resolve or the politicians did between the clintonera tax rates where we had great prosperity and the bushera tax rate where we didnt have that prosperity. For some reason we chose to go with the bushera tax rates for 99 of americans. That makes no sense. But again and boehner is saying now hes literally i got 99 of what i want. Do you have confidence hes not going to get anything in the next round . I have confidence in the president by separating this out got what he wanted. Separating this whole debt ceiling out was his strategyi dont think youll hear john boehner say he got 99 of what he wanted. Cenk the ending of the negotiations. But whether theyre going to negotiate or not i think the president will say im not going to negotiate over the debt ceiling, but the sequester is happening at the same time and im negotiating over the sequester. That might be part of the negotiation. The president was careful today in this press conference as you just showed to say were talking about in. This is about doing the debt ceiling about paying the debt. It has nothing to do with the sequester. He didnt talk about them together. He talked about them separately. In fact, thats where the negotiating will happen. He said to congress well have to figure out a way not to increase deficit. It will have to come with spending cuts. Cenk more austerity, i wouldnt do any more of it. But he also talked about guns. He was asked about guns. I think what well hear him talk about hear here now but 836 people now since the newtown tragedy has died. Thats almost as if we have woken up for 32 days and there was a nu town every single day. Cenk every time we update it i get surprised. Oh, my god, its been that many more and its insanity. I think a great majority of the American People are on to it. It is a majority, 52 of americans are now more supportive of gun control since newtown. Were making progress, of course it depends on what is in it. He has the option and hes talking about using the executive order. Here is the president. Obama well, my understanding of the Vice President is going to provide a range of steps that we can take to reduce gun violence. Some of them will require legislation, some of them i can accomplish through executive action. Cenk so the executive action seems strong. Yes. Cenk do we know what theyre refer to go. It can refer to any number of things. The president specifically has not talked specifically about what would be an executive action the Vice President hasnt either. One of the things that people are thinking that he will do are background checks, to have this universal background check system even if the gun lobby or nra, they have a waning power and i should point out today there is an nra target practice. I think thats what the name of the app is. For four years and older, its nra practice range. This is the same nra that is selling an app that way saying the video games and guns have nothing to do with it, four and over. Cenk something really interesting i read at the end of last week. You wonder why the nra is so mental on not giving an initial on any initial. The one that i think theyre going to lose on is high capacity magazines. No one can justify having 30 bullets in a magazine unless you want to shoot and kill more people in one shooting.
