And his plan was to fly and stay here and the next morning start on a whistle stop across the state. But then word got out in the community that he was going to stay here the night. Students started gathering here. He was supposed to get here around 11 00 and instead he got here closetory 2 00. Students were waiting for three hours. His plan was to sneak in the side door and sleep for the night. He had to get up early in the morning. But when he heard there was a huge crowd he couldnt do that. Here he is looking at this huge cloud road corro crowd of people. He said to them, if you are a doctor, engineer or technician would you be willing to go abroad for a year or two and that would help the cause of democracy worldwide. And he went on and said people dont go to college just to do better in life but to do something for the world. How many of you who are going to be doctors are willing to spend your days in began na. How many of you are willing to work in Foreign Service and spend your days trailing around the world. On your willingness to contr contribute your life to this world. I think it can. But the effort must be far greater than we have ever made in the past. So that might have think the end of it, except that there were people in the audyeps a married couple who decided to take it one step further. And they ended up with this petition drive where they got 800 signatures and the drive wasnt just we think this was a great idea. It was if you set something up like this we would join it. Two weeks later at the palace in san francisco, he announced it and called it the peace corp. And then when he became president , it was an executive order march 1st, 1961. Later Sergeant Shriver who was the first director of the peace corp, he said if this hadnt happened, if the petition hadnt been presented to him. This was done at 2 00 in the morning at a college. He didnt know if they were cheering because they got to hear him. He didnt know that it was the idea of the speech. The students hero responded like they promised to. And for a long time, i dont know what the latest numbers are, but for years ive known it is probably still true that the university of mesh miichigan wa high on the number of graduates that went into the peace corp. They also used to do training here. There is a lot offenn lot eten lets say. Members of the graduating class and my fellow americans. It is a great pleasure to be here today. We are in the university of michigan stadium. This is where president johnson announced the Great Society program which was his major plan for improving the countory. He gave it at the 1964 commencement it was may 22nd, six months after kennedy was shot. Johnson had just been in office, for six months, and he would be running for election. And this was seen by him and his staff as a good time to roll out this program that was going to be his touchstop stone of what wanted to do with his presidency. It was a big audience, they had school kids from all over the state and the whole place was filled. Your imagination and your initiative and inner indignation will determine where we build a Great Society where progress is the result of our needs. For in your time, we have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich society, and the powerful society, but upward to the Great Society. The Great Society was a whole amalgum of all of the programs that johnson was thinking would be a good idea. He came from a poor background and the reason he has said he was in government was because he wanted to help other people. He mentioned the cities and the things that the people in the countries and the city would need. Clean other air, water, schools. Headstart he mentioned and the city thing encompassed a whole bunch of things and the Voting Rights act. It was key to our democracy and non discrimination and also medicare and medicaid. And you read the speech and you read about this event with sort of a what if you know the road not taken view. If it wasnt for the vietnam war wow, this guy did this great stuff. We think wow, johnson moved us ahead working on our problems as a society. But the interesting think about it on the sideline was he was clearly doing this for a national audience. He knew this would be televised and he wasnt worried about being here at the university of mesh mi michigan. Towards the end of the speech he made a reference to young people. Sort of like kennedy did with the peace corp speech. He once mentioned michigan when he was talking about education because i read over the speech. He wasnt partisan either in the speech. He was trying to be a statesman. I think it is interesting that both of these major events that are part of our National History and a major part of their programs and what they did, that they happened here. I dont think it was an accident. Michigan, the university of michigan is certainly known for young people who care about the world and has a prtradition of always having lots of discussion and opinions. And they knew that they would get a good response. Throughout the weekend, American History tv is featuring ann arbor, michigan.
