It is my pleasure to welcome everyone here to the first of an exciting new series of interviews conducted a i smithsonian regent and philanthropist extraordinary david rubenstein. Im sure you will agree david is also a Great American. [applause] we are kicking off this Great American a fascinating conversation with one of the most accomplished people on the world stage secretary madeleine albright. [applause] and what better place to begin than in this Great American museum . The smithsonian has always been uniquely american, examining culture and history, exploring artistic expression and scientific innovation. Ofay we are an institution 19 museums, Nine Research centers, a national zoo, with collections totaling 156 million objects. Still, the story of america is so expensive that we continually work to include even more chapters. That necessitates telling more complex and more diverse story that better reflect who we are as a people. Just across the street, the new National Museum of African American history and culture is set to open. The personal stories of its 3000 beplayed objects tell can heartbreaking, uplifting, joyous, defiance, but they share the ability to help us tell the american story to visitors from around the country and around the globe. Our first secretary, joseph henry, and understood the inherent responsibility we held to share that knowledge. He said the worth and importance of the institution is not to be estimated by what it accumulates within the walls of its building , but by what it sends forth into the world. Trained to play an ever more important were role in spurring dialogue internationally. We have thought leaders to discuss stereotypes and Cultural Appropriation in sports. To smithsonian is dedicated telling the full story of america, not shying away from parts of which we are not as proud, knowing full well that we are still striving to form a more perfect union. Throughout our nations history, people have shown they will rise above adversity and do things to change our perception of what is possible. Museumrican history showcases numerous examples of greatness in all kinds of endeavors. We all recently saw greatness in action again at the lipids in rio. The athletes representing our nation showed what our athletes are capable of them out of their ethnicity, their gender, no matter their religion. It is a reminder that our country is stronger for our diversity area the u. S. Olympic team is a microcosm of america. There is greatness all around us.
