That doesnt exist in other forms of life but it justifies meeting out my phone in saint peters life . Let me jump in and say whats going on. You said is novel, the idea, how do you get people over the idea that this is a novelty or how do you get people over the idea that that one lifestream you saw that is not good it turns out its not hard to do but these people are going to get better at it. Are you encouraging people to sort of professionalize what they are doing . Novelty is what may drive in to check this out in the first place. The actual interaction of the product is what will get them to state. We have to approach to those challenges differently because what attracts the broadcaster to come back and come back is very different than one factor viewer and the realities we focus on both of those tracks differently. In the context of broadcasters, we try to make the kind of tools in your toolbox as a broadcaster more and more interesting over time. We watched over the last couple of months , now go pro and integration as well as drone integration so you can be broadcasting from your phone and switching between your phone camera, your go pro and your drone in the same broadcast, thats another creative lever that we didnt have before so we have to continue evolving what they can actually do with the medium to make this not a novelty but utility they can use direct with audiences. Doesnt make sense at some point to have that functionality built into the hardware itself . You mean when you are using your go pro . Where is not an act, its a button and you are periscope in i think there are pros and cons either way. Using the phone as the nexus has a lot of advantages but you may have devices, that makes a lot of sense in the context of the go pro. Strapping it on to your chest and your cruising down the mountain, you dont want to touch the device whereas if you have an external camera you want to place here and have that start broadcasting, you will probably wanted. Twitter needs to actually be in the hardware business for this to work or can you always work as sort of a software. I dont think we need to be in the hardware space. There may be advantages to having integrations or potentially even owning the stack is what you can accomplish with software and Software Integration and theres a lot you can accomplish with building an api on top of the. One of the things that facebook is doing is saying, were going to broadcast live but you dont have to make it live. You guys can take something you recorded and push it out. Really its tv. Does that make sense you question mark is that something you would like to do . We want to get more and more types of live content. And so what that means to us is it doesnt necessarily need to be captured from a mobile device which is why you see us entering the space with go pro and drones. I think that also means it could come from a device thats not any of those. It can come from some doc that cutting multiple camera angles. Whats more important than the source is out we did note where it actually came from like what we care about, we always said scope is a platform for true and efficacy and then we can hold onto about truth is that right now and periscope when you see something and it says live , you know that its happening. Its being captured by someones device where in the world and we show you the latitude and longitude. Theres nothing powerful about that that we can stand behind so i think when we enter a world where we are getting nonphone inputs into the ecosystem, we have to denote that in a way where the viewer can make a decision as to i understand this is not being captured from the phone and im going to interpret what i will from that but at least the platform has served me that information. Liberties will use periscope, were talking about kevin hart backstage. Other people that have become celebrities on periscope or natives to that form war just periscope stars . Definitely. One of the Amazing Things as we observe, platform involve is you have these microcommunities of stars and stars that didnt even necessarily is the right term but you have these niche terms like the hairstyling community or pottery community and you have these partners will spend hours on periscope broadcasting their craft and attracting other folks were really into pottery, slightly potters or really want to observe the crack there are many celebrities within their own ecosystem. How do you make money on periscope if you are a many celebrities . Now platform itself is directly making money theres no opposition at all. Theres no opposition in the periscope real estate but theres a lot of things that i think we get to experiment with as a result of being a part of twitter and the simple example is we are starting to see some brands experiment with promoted tweets that have periscope in them. We saw doritos use this during the super bowl where they were periscope and promoted the tweet of the periscope on twitter. One way you see creators monetizing is they built up an audience on periscope with their existing twitter audience, they can go to brands and sponsors and either help bring their brand onto the periscope platform by doing some sort of collaboration or some sort of activation. Unassuming at somepoint advertising comes to periscope. Its one of the ways we could monetize the platform. We are interested in other ways as well but if we were to pursue advertising, we feel really strongly about not doing the kind of traditional my buddy peter is live right now but before i get to watch them on the p with his dog i have to watch this 62nd b role. We want to be a little more inspired by that but its obviously one mechanism that we can. Thats worked pretty well for youtube, distributing to their creators and buildup in ecosystem. Is when one very effective way to monetize it. Other things that you were doing on periscope year ago that you are able to do now technically . We are investing a lot in the video infrastructure and that matters to us in a number of ways. It matters in terms of the fundamental capabilities of how low latency is and how low the connection time is and we didnt necessarily own as much as a year ago when we rebuilt a lot of infrastructure. How many people are working on her scope in twitter . Smallcompany. Its a small company. We have the benefit of collaborating with a lot of our friends on twitter so its an unfair number to look at. You get to leverage the best parts or the relevant parts of twitter it come see who you met or be at an infrastructure. Or support for other Technical Resources that help us do what we do without having more. At some point this periscope just become a function of twitter westmark you guys said you were testing to go live button on twitter. You just hit a button and you are recording . We think theres a lot of value in having a separate app, having separate real estate, separate brand that doesnt mean you wont see overtime more integration within the Twitter Product and over the last three or four months we have full consumer playback integration on ios android and web so if you stumble onto a periscope in your twitter time, you are seeing live video play. That didnt exist sick months ago or a year ago so i think you see more product integration like that, the go live button in the twitter compose as well but you will continue to see periscope and if you have a separate app on your phone that is all about seeing and creating live video, what does that look and feel like . That deserves to be its own space. One thing thats also different is there was a lot of discussion about whether you guys were going to enable piracy or a discussion about people watching a baseball game through periscope. In that conversation dying down . The conversation originally started because it was probably the first time where you had a breakaway consumer application and so there was a lot of above about this idea of is periscope a boon to piracy and all thisother stuff. Piracy and pornography. Those are two things that people have asked us about ever since we started pitching investors. I think that a couple things happen. One, people realized that periscope isnt actually a very effective tool to use for piracy. If you want to get a bootleg copy of game of thrones, there are 50 better ways to do that. The world is a big place. Going to try to force but at the end of the day i think weve done a good job of being very vocal externally on the policy standpoint, this is not something we want on our platform, both for content and copyrighted material and we have a lot of procedures in place to respond to that stuff and i think over time the other thing that helps this external perception is a lot of these partners who were concerned about their content being kind of redistributed on periscope, they became users of the product as well as you mentioned baseball. The doctors and the mets are using pace periscope on most every game to stream practice so that creates a perception that periscope is a place i go to watch the doctors, watch the mets, watch what cnbc wasbroadcasting so that has helped. The combination of those things has helped. Six months ago cnbc was kicking people out of their studio because they were periscope in. I think its changed quite a bit. Thank you members of the class of 2,016. President belton. Faculty, parents, friends. Its an honor to share this day of celebration with you. And all my friends, thank you for your Exemplary Service to the Southern University of new orleans and the state of louisiana. Under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable over the last 10 years. Donna and i and the state of louisiana wish you well in your future endeavors. And while i am here, i want to issue an official statement named by the authority of the state of louisiana, specifically high, John Bell Edwards together with the citizens of this great state to hereby give special recognition to doctor victor u polo, chancellor in acknowledgment of your leadership and dedicated service to the Southern University new orleans and the Southern University system from 2,006 two 2,016 and whereof i have set my hand officially and called to be a fixed this great seal of the state of louisiana, n city of baton rouge on the seventh day of may 2,016. And ive sign this and want to give this to you doctor polo as a sign of appreciation to the great state of louisiana for you. [applause] before i go any further, our invocation today mentions ordering our steps. And so did that musical selection. And god will order our steps if we ask him to. He will order our steps in his words but we still have to move our feet. We all have to move our feet. Youre going to get an opportunity here as you leave as graduates to move your feet as youve never done before so congratulations. Its a great day. To be here to celebrate with you. On may 25 of 1988, i graduated from west point. It was an outdoor service. We were wearing full dress gray over white. And what i remember was raining hard. We smelled like a lot of dirty sheets and the speaker spoke way too long. And im sure he gave a good speech. In fact it was the Vice President george bush much later became president but i still dont remember much of it. So im not going to keep you long today. In fact, im told that one time doctor seuss gave a commencement speech. He got up and he said that the purpose of education is to determine what from stuff and having said that, ive said enough and he sat down. Im not going to be that brief im not going to give up on suno either [applause] i have long believed that suno is too important not to fight for. And when there were threats of closures in the Southern University system, i stood up to defend this universitys important place in this community and in our state. I know that theres a vital role now and in the future for a public hbcus in new orleans and that is your role, suno. [applause] suggestions to the contrary or incomprehensible to me. Your education is not just your priority, its mine. Its a priority for everybody in the state of louisiana. Despite the roadblocks along the way, suno has experienced tremendous growth through new and renovated buildings, steadily declining enrollment and oneofakind programs such as the Forensic Science program and the honorary center for undergraduate student achievement. Named for a louisiana hero, an American Hero and the Southern University graduate, Lieutenant General russell l honorc. Eventually, the fema trailers disappeared and in their place the Small Business Incubators Center was built. If that isnt resilience, i dont know whatresilience is. In addition to representing a new chapter for suno, you also represent a new chapter for the great state of louisiana. One i hope that is also resilient. One that i know is resilient as well. And theres no doubt we have challenges to overcome. We are still dealing with the largest budget deficit in the history of our state. Weve seen the largest cuts to Higher Education in the nation over the last eight years and at the same time the highest increases in tuition. In the nation. Over the last eight years. We continue to have the highest incarceration rate in the nation and we should not. The people in louisiana are not innately more sinister, more criminal than people elsewhere. And we shouldnt put them in prison. To a greater extent than the rest of the country. [applause] so while im very frank about the challenges we face as a state, i want you to know that i am also genuinely optimistic about the future of louisiana and that is largely because of the bright individuals seated in these seats right in front of me. You know, we can never and it should never guarantee equality of outcomes in our state but we must guarantee equality of opportunity and access to quality Higher Education is an opportunity and your graduation today presents another. And i want to focus for a minute on samuel apache. Graduating today. In addition to having the highest grade point average in his class, samuel has been working parttime for the past three years as a Research Assistant at the Louisiana Cancer Research center. Because of his passion for life saving research, he has decided to continue this work before starting a joint phd Program Next Year at the lsu Health Sciences center. Thank you samuel. I am delighted that you plan on staying here in louisiana because we need you here. In fact, we need all of you here. Too many times ive seen young people of our state think they might have to leave to get a great education or have a good job or a rewarding career. Nothing could be further from the truth area opportunity, great opportunity awaits you right here in louisiana. Just look at suno alumnus orlando williams. The same year that suno returned home to new orleans, orlando graduated with a masters after also receiving our undergraduate education era suno. He went on to be the first woman to serve as chair of Paris Council and the youngest person ever elected president of the Louisiana Police jury associations black caucus. So never underestimate the power that you have to make a real difference. Your talents and your fresh ideas can forward a new and better path for louisiana. And a determined spirit is one of the greatest gifts you can take away from suno. Its the kind of determination that will give louisiana a better and Brighter Future but it will also help you as you enter this new chapter in your own life and while i am confident that you are leaving here with the tools needed to be successful, i cannot promise you that its going to be easy. The test of school may be behind you but there will always be tests in life and many of them will be harder. And even when it may seem impossible, never, ever doubt your abilities to succeed and dont let anyone convince you that you cannot be successful. So dream big area chase that dream and catch it. Im speaking to you today is the 56th governor of the state of louisiana and had i listened to the experts, the political pundits, the naysayers, i would never have run for this office because i wasnt supposed to win so when i tell you you can do anything, trust me. You can do it. If you can dream it, if you can chase it, you will catch it. [applause] so i hope you leave here today not only with a quality education but with a determination to make a positive difference not just in your life and not just in the life of your family but in your community, in your state and in this world in which we live live. Congratulations graduates and god bless each and every one of you. [applause] Hillary Clinton is holding a Campaign Rally in cleveland at this hour. We will bring you live coverage and she begins her remarks. Until then, a commencement address at Colorado College with marcia mcknight, president of the National Academy of sciences. She is the first female editorinchief for Science Magazine and a graduate of Colorado Colleges class of 1,974. [applause] wow. What a great day this is. I am just so thrilled to be here as your commitments feature and to be able to congratulate the graduates, parents, the family , faculty and friends of the class of 2,016. You know, honestly to me, it seems like it was just yesterday i was putting on your side of the podium. As a member of the first class to be entirely educated under the block plan. And now, instead, i am saving up for my own grandchildrens college education. And thinking to myself will the class of 2,034 still go to college . And im thinking, well thats probably a pretty safe assumption because this system of Higher Education has actually been around since the 11th century. So that is a pretty good run. And when you think of how many changes weve had in just the last 50 years and how Much Technology has changed every aspect of our daily lives, but yet we still find it essential for young minds to gather on a campus to learn and grow. I think its a pretty good bet that my grandchildren are going to be on a College Campus and that is how they are going to learn to be independent thinkers. Now, graduations are a time when Everyone Wants to give all of youadvice. Your professors want to tell you what to do with your degree. Your parents want to tell you what to do with your lives. And graduation speakers trying to find lofty truths to prepare you for success and youre probably going to forget tomorrow after a good night of partying anything i told you and as your esteemed board chair told me a few minutes ago, you are not only going to forget what i told you, you are not going to forget how long i took to tell you that. So, with that in mind, let me on with my remarks. I sort of view life as a high stakes poker game. And advice that is given to you is more or less like cards that you are being dealt in five card draw. And you got to decide which of those cards to keep and which of those cards to discard. And when i look at the success that ive hadin my own life , compared to that of my peers, i dont think that i necessarily been dealt any better cards than anyone else. But the only thing thats been different is being a little better at deciding which cards to hold and which cards to discard. So the advice i want to try to pass on to you today is how do you make a decision on which cards to keep and which cards to discard . What advice is worth keeping and which advice do you want to pass on . And i want to give you some examples from my own career. Now first, i learned early on in my own career that you wanted to discard advice from people who cant imagine you doing things that are outside their own experience. And so they say, well, this wasnt in my experience so i cant imagine it being in your experience and thats the advice they give to you. So they want to basically, they want future generations to have their own fate major in physics because theres never been a woman to graduate in this department. If the Wright Brothers had taken that attitude i would have taken a train to get here to give this graduation speech. Now if that sounds pretty outrageous to you, the problem is, is, if it comes from an authority figure, you can have a hard time discarding it because it comes from someone you respect. So this is a time when you need to listen to what is being said rather than who is saying it. Now i think that more difficult choices in terms of taking or discarding the advice comes from when the advice is actually very wellintentioned and it comes from people who are actually very much looking out for your best interest. So let me give you two examples of this. When i was nearing graduation, i had planned, along with my best friend to take a year off to work at a ski a ski resort in sun valley idaho. Then i would apply to graduate school a year later. I thought my plan was brilliant. When i talked to my graduate advisor about it, she was horrified. So i said, whats wrong with this idea. He said, he was concerned that id get out of the habit of studying, i would have a parttime job job and get used to having money in my pocket and i would get derailed from my plan of eventually going to graduate school and that basically i would never return to school. His concerns actually made some sense to me. So i ditched my plan to be a ski bum and i immediately went to graduate school instead. Now i dont want to scare any of you out there who have plans because im sure any pursuits you have in your plan are more redeeming than being a ski bum and will actually benefit you in terms of your applications to graduate school. So, dont fret. Actually, being a ski bum probably would not have benefited my application to graduate school. But if i had not followed my professors advice, who knows what would have happened. Right now i could be a bartender in idaho wondering about the path not taken. Or worse yet, rationalizing that it actually was the best i could of done and that i never would have been cut out for anything better. We leave this program now. You can see at any time cspan. Org. Now is the time to unite behind smart, effective strategies to go after terrorism wherever it exists and to keep america safe at home and abroad all while upholding the values that made the United States of america the greatest country on earth. [applause] now is the time, beginning sunday, yesterday, now is the time, now is past time to finally muster the political courage to say enough is enough. [applause] now is past time to pass common safe laws to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists and out of the hands of violent criminals. [applause] sundays violence was fueled by hatred, hatred which which has no place in our country. As we watch the news and horror yesterday, my my wife connie and i couldnt help but remember how very different we felt almost exactly a year ago. We stood on the steps of Cleveland City hall celebrating the historic Marriage Equality decision. [applause] that day we joined a community of lgbt americans and are straight allies in one joyful celebration. Today we want our lgbt friends and neighbors to know that america stands with you in your grief and your outrage just as we stood with you in celebration a year ago. [applause] understand that you are not alone, straight or gay. You are not alone. We are with you and we will not tolerate hate in our country. [applause] while we grieve standing here, im reminded of the resilience of our american spirit. Marjorie and dan moore experienced a worse tragedy any parents could imagine with the loss of their daughter wendy. They took their grief and they turned it into action. They want to protect other daughters and sons with the equipment that you all make in here at Cleveland Ohio. In doing so they create good manufacturing jobs and contribute to our local communities to save lives and what is better than that . [applause] this is the american spirit. These are the values that we see every day, every single day in Hillary Clinton. [applause] these are values that i saw from a distance and then beast beginning in 2007 when i came to the senate. I had the peer good luck of having my office right across the hall from senator clinton from new york. Right across the hall for those couple years in 2007 and eight, these are the values that i see in hillary. These are the values i know in hillary and these are the bill values that i trust in Hillary Clinton. Hillary clinton has the wisdom. She has the resolve. Our country is safe in the conviction and in the strength to refuse to let america be intimidated by terror. She has the courage to fight for commonsense laws to protect americans from gun violence. She has the compassion to stand with lgbt americans who are the target of hate and violence and she has the strength to unite americans to fight back against aids hate hate and violence. She has the strength, the wisdom and the experience to unite us by appealing to our shared values, not by appealing to our fears. I believe Hillary Clinton is that leader. I trust Hillary Clinton to be that leader of our great country with that, its my my honor to introduce the former first lady. Hillary rodham clinton. [applause] [applause] [applause] thank you. I especially want to applaud team wendy for everything you do to protect our troops. First responders and others from traumatic brain injury. It is so important that we continue to support those who protect us. We want hillary. We want hillary. We want hillary. We want hillary. We want hillary. Thank you thank you all. [applause] it is good to be back in cleveland. I can tell you that i want to thank your extraordinary senator , for his leadership, for that very kind and generous introduction. You are very fortunate that you have him representing you. I want to thank your congresswoman marcia fudge who is both indomitable. She is such a tenacious advocate for the people she represents. I want to represent and acknowledge mayor jackson who is here, county executives and i particularly want to recognize the passing of george. A bench. He divided his life to serving the people of ohio, as mayor of cleveland and mayor and senator. We send our prayers and sympathy to his family. I also want to thank the owner and founder of this company and team wendy for his belief in cleveland, for his commitment to create jobs. I cant wait to work with him and do more with what he has accomplished here. You know originally, i had intended to come to cleveland under very different circumstances. We are heading into a general election that could be the most consequential of our lifetime. But today is not a day for politics. On sunday americans woke up to an a nightmare that has become mind numbingly familiar. Another act of terrorism in a place no one expected. A mad man with hate, with guns in his hands and just a horrible sense of vengeance and vindictiveness in his heart. Apparently consumed against rage against elgin g bt americans and by extension the openness and diversity that defines our american way of life. We will learn more about the killer in the days to come. We know that he pledged allegiance to isis, that they are now taking credit and part of their strategy is to radicalize individuals and encourage attacks against the United States even if they are not coordinated with isis leadership. There is a lot we still dont know, including what other mix of motives drove him to kill. The more we learn about what happened, the better we will be able to protect our people going forward. In the days ahead, ahead, we will also learn more about the many lives he viciously cut short. Many of them young people, just starting out in their lives. They were travel agents and pharmacy techs, College Students and Amusement Park workers. Sons and daughters, brothers and sisters and they had one thing in common. They all had a lot more to give. We should take a moment today and in our busy lives to think about them to pray for everyone who was killed, for the wounded, those who are fighting to regain their lives and futures, for our First Responders who walked into danger one more time. As a mother i cant imagine what those families are going through lets also remember the other scene we saw on sunday. We saw the faces of some of those First Responders who rushed into danger and try to save as many people as they could. We saw survivors like chris hansen who risked their lives to help others. People gathering outside hospitals to comfort anxious family members, waiting for news of their loved ones and waiting to learn more about what they could do to make sure this never happen again. Religious leaders condemning hate and appealing for peace. People lining up to donate blood americans refusing to be intimidated or divided. Yesterday i called the mayor of orlando and i offered my support and appreciation for the leadership that he and other officials have shown. This is a moment when all americans need to stand together no matter how many times we endure attacks like this, the horror never fades. The murder of innocent people breaks our hearts. It tears that our sense of security and makes us furious. Now we have to have our resolve to respond. Thats what i want to talk about. How we respond. The orlando terrorist may be dead but the virus that poisoned his mind remains very much alive we must attack it with clear eyes steady hands, unwavering determination and pride in our country and our values. [applause] i have no doubt, i have no doubt we can meet this challenge if we made it together. Whatever we learn about this killer, his motive in the days ahead, we know already the barbarity that we face from radical jihadists is profound. In the middle east isis is attempting a genocide of religious and ethnic minorities. They are slaughtering muslims to refuse to accept their mid evil ways. They are beheading civilians including executing lgbt people. They are murdering americans and europeans and enslaving, torturing and raping women and girls. In speeches like this one, after paris, brussels brussels and san bernardino, i have laid out a plan to defeat isis and the other radical jihadist groups in the region and beyond. The attack in orlando makes it even more clear we cannot contain this threat. We must defeat it. The good news is, the Coalition Effort in syria and iraq has made recent gains in the last month. We should keep the pressure on ramping up the air campaign, accelerating support for our friends, fighting to take and hold ground, and pushing our partners in the region to do even more. We also need continued American Leadership to help resolve the political conflicts that fuel isis recruitment efforts. As isis loses actual ground in iraq and syria, it will seek to stage more attacks and gain stronger footholds wherever it can. From afghanistan to libya to europe, the threat is metastasizing. We saw this in paris and we saw it in brussels. We face a twisted ideology and poisoned psychology that inspires the socalled lone wolves, radicalized individuals who may or may not have contact and direction from any, organization. So yes, efforts to defeat isis on the battlefield must succeed, but it will take more than that. [applause] we have to be just as adaptable and versatile as our enemies. As president , i will make a deathdefying and stopping lone wolves a top priority i will put a Team Together from across our government, the entire government, as as well as the private sector and communities to get on top of this urgent challenge. I will make sure our Law Enforcement and intelligence professionals have all the resources they need to get the job done. As we do this, there are three areas that demand attention. First, we and our allies must work handinhand to dismantle the networks that move money and propaganda and arms and fighters around the world. We have to slow, we have to stem the flow of jihadists from europe and america to iraq, syria, afghanistan and then back again. The only way to do this is by working closely with our partners, strengthening our alliances, not weakening them or walking away from them. Second, here at home we must harden our own defenses. We have to do more to support our First Responders, Law Enforcement and intelligence officers. We have great personal risk to keep our country safe. [applause] i have seen firsthand how hard their job is and how well they do it. In orlando, at least one Police Officer was shot in the head. Thankfully, his life was saved by a kevlar helmet, something something here at team wendy know a lot about. Its often been said that our Law Enforcement, our intelligence agencies, our First Responders have to be right 100 of the time. The terrorists only have to be right once. What a heavy responsibility. These men and Women Deserve both our respect and gratitude and they deserve the right tools and resources and training. Too often, state and local officials cant get access to intelligence from the federal government that would help them do their job. We need to change that. We also need to work with local Law Enforcement and Business Owners on ways to protect vulnerable soft targets like nightclubs and shopping malls and hotels in theaters and schools and houses of worship. I know a lot of americans are asking how it was possible that someone already on the fbis radar could have still been able to commit an attack like the one in orlando. What more we can do to stop this kind of thing from happening again. We have to see what the investigation uncovers. If there are things that can and should be done to improve our ability to prevent, we must do them. We already know we need more resources for this fight. The professionals that keep us safe would say we need better intelligence for these plots can be carried out. Thats why ive proposed an intelligence surge to bolster our capabilities across the board with appropriate safeguards here at home. Even if we make sure our Security Officials get the tools they need to prevent attack, its essential we stop terrorists from getting the tools they need to carry out an attack. [applause] that is especially true when it comes to assault weapons like those here in orlando and san bernardino. [applause] i believe weapons of war have no place on our streets. [applause] we may have our disagreements about gun safety regulation but we should all be able to agree on a few essential things. If the fbi is watching you for a suspected terrorist link, you shouldnt be able to just go up by a gun with no questions asked [applause] you shouldnt be able to exploit loopholes and evade criminal background check by buying online or at a gun show. [applause] and yes, if if you are too dangerous to get on a plane you are too dangerous to buy a gun in america. [applause] assault weapons and background checks are totally separate issues having nothing to do with terrorism. In orlando and san bernardino, terrorists use assault weapons. The ar 15 and they used this to kill americans that was the same weapon used to kill those little children in sandy hook. We have to make it harder for people who should not have those weapons of war. That may not stop every shooting or every terrorist attack but it will stop them and it will save lives and it will protect our First Responders. [applause] i want you to know that im not going to stop fighting for these kinds of provisions. The third area that demands attention is preventing radicalization and countering efforts by isis and ever International Terrorist efforts in the United States and europe. For starters, it is long past time for the saudi and the kuwaitis and others to stop their citizens from funding extremist organizations. [applause] they should stop supporting radical schools and mosques around the world that have sent too many young people on a path toward extremism. We also have to use all of our capabilities to counter jihadist propaganda online. This is something i have spent a lot of time on at the state department. As president , i will work with our great Tech Companies from Silicon Valley to boston to step up our game. We have to do a better job intercepting isis communications, tracking and analyzing social media posts and mapping Jihadist Networks as well as promoting credible voices who can provide alternatives to radicalization. There is more to do offline as well. Since 911 Law Enforcement agencies have worked hard to build relationships with Muslim American communities. Millions of peaceloving muslims live, work work and raise their families across america. [applause] they are the most likely to recognize the insidious effects of radicalization before it is too late and the best position to help us block it. We should be intensifying contacts in those communities not scapegoating or isolating them. Last year i visited a Pilot Program in minneapolis that helps parents, teachers, moms, Mental Health professionals and others recognize signs of radicalization and young people. They work with Law Enforcement to intervene before it is too late. Ive also met with local leaders pursuing Innovative Solutions and we need more efforts like that in more cities across america. As the director of the fbi has pointed out we should avoid eroding trust in that community which will only make Law Enforcement job more difficult. Inflammatory and rhetoric and threatening to ban the family and friends of Muslim Americans as well as millions of Business People and tourists from entering our country hurt the vast majority of muslim who love freedom and hate terror. [applause] soto saying that we have to start special surveillance on her fellow americans because of their religion. Its no coincidence that hate crimes against american muslims and mosques have tripled after paris and san bernardino. Thats wrong and its also dangerous. It plays right into the terrorist hands. Still as i have said before, none of us can close our eyes to the fact that we do face enemies who use their distorted version of islam to justify slaughtering innocent people. They take us all back to the standalone stone age if they could just as they have in parts of iraq and syria. The terrorist in orlando targeted lgbt americans out of hatred and bigotry. An attack on any american is an attack on all americans. [applause] [applause] i want to say this, to all the lgbt people grieving today in florida and across our country, you have millions of allies who will always have your back. [applause] i am one of them. [applause] laramie and now orlando, weve seen too many examples of how the struggle to live freely, openly and without fear has been met by violence. We have to stand together, be proud together. There is no better rebuke to the terrorists on all those who hate our open Diverse Society and it is an asset in the fight against terrorism, not a liability. It makes makes us stronger and more resistant to radicalization this raises a larger point about the future of our country. America is strongest when we all believe that we have a stake in our country and our future. This vision has sustained us from the beginning. The belief that yes, we are all created equal and the journey we have made to turn that into reality over the course of our history, that we are not a land of winners and losers, that we should all have the opportunity to live up to our godgiven potential and we have a responsibility to help others do so as well. [applause] as ive looked at americas history, i see this has always been a country of the week, not me. We we stand together because we are stronger together. One, out of many, one has seen us through the darkest chapter of our history. Ever since 13 squabbling colonies put aside their disagreements and united because they realized they were going to rise together or fall separately generation after generation has fought and marched and organized to widen the circle of dignity and opportunity. Ending slavery, expanding the right to vote, throwing open the doors of education, building the greatest middleclass the world has ever seen. We are stronger when more people can participate in our democracy. [applause] we are stronger when everyone can share in the reward of our economy and contribute to our communities. When we bridge or divide and lift each other up instead of tearing each other down. We have overcome a lot together and we will overcome the threats of terror and radicalization and all of our other challenges. Here in ohio and across america, i have listen to people talk about the problems that keep you up at night. The bonds that hold us together as communities, as one national community, are strained by an economy with too much inequality and too little upward mobility. It strained by social and Political Division that has diminished our trust in each other and our confidence in our shared future. I have heard that and i want you to know that as your president , i will work every day to break down all the Barriers Holding you back and keeping us apart. We are going to get an economy that works for everyone, not just those of the top. We are going to forge a new new sense of connection and shared responsibility to each other and our nation. Finally, finally let us be reminded, i remember, i remember how it felt the day after 911 and i bet many of you do as well. Americans from all walks of life rallied together with a sense of common purpose on september the 12th. In the days and weeks and months that followed, we had each others back. I was a senator from new york. There was a republican president , a republican governor and republican mayor. We did not attack each other. We worked with each other to protect our country and to rebuild. [applause] president bush went to a Muslim Community center just six days after the attack to send a message of unity and solidarity. To anyone who wanted to take out their anger on our muslim neighbors and fellow citizens, he said, that should not and that will not stand in america. It is time to get back to the spirit of those days. The spirit of 912. Lets make sure we keep looking for the best of our country, the best of each of us. Democratic and republican president s have risen to the occasion in the face of tragedy. Earlier today president obama spoke to members of the press after his National Security team briefed him on a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando Florida on saturday night. After comments from president obama, we will then have brief comments from fbi director james comey. What we want to do is give you a sense of what we know so far and then tell you as much as we can about our past contact with the killer. We are going through the killers life as i said, especially his electronics to understand as much as we can about his path and whether or not anyone else was involved in directing him or assisting him. We see no indication that his plot was directed from outside the United States. We see no association of any kind of that network. It is unclear just what terrorist group he aspired to support. Although he made clear his affinity at the time of the attack, generally leading up to the attack for radical islamic groups. He made 911 calls from the club during the attack at about 230 america morning, sunday morning. There were three different calls. He called and he hung up he called again and spoke briefly with the dispatcher and then he hung up and then the dispatcher called him back again and they spoke briefly. There were three total calls. During the calls he said he was doing this for the leader of iso who he named and pledged loyalty to but he also appeared to claim solidarity with the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing and solitary solidarity with a man who died as a suicide bomber in syria. The bombers at the Boston Marathon and the suicide bomber from florida were not inspired by isil which adds a little bit to the confusion about his motives. Of course we are working to understand what role antigay bigotry bigotry may have played in this attack. Its early and we are working hard to understand the killer and his motives and his sources of inspiration. We are highly confident that this killer was radicalized and at least in some part through the internet. At Montgomery Blair high school. Fortyone students were presented with awards in front of classmates, teachers, parents and local officials. Org Chris Shelton is president of the Communications Workers of America Union and he is our guest this week on communicators. Welcome to cspan. We appreciate you coming over. Give us a snapshot of the cwa, if you would. We have approximately 700,000 members, not not only intelligent medications as most people think but in just about every walk of life, every job you can possibly think of we have reporters and nurses and even some rocket scientists in new jersey. We have printers, we have manufacturing folks, you name it, we have them. Public workers workers so we are not the old cwa the people think about where it was just telephone employees. How is it that you can represent those other people under the umbrella of cwa . We have merged a lot of other unions, for instance the last one we merged was the flight attendants union. Weve represented these folks, for instance the print servers coming to cwa in 1987 and we been merging other unions since then. What are some of the Telecommunications Companies for your workers are represented. At t, verizon, frontier frontier, tmobile, you name it. Speaking of rising, just 45 day they strike ended. What was the strike about . The strike, from our point of view was about one thing and one thing only, jobs and job security. I think for verizon it was a lot of things and we managed to come out of it with what we wanted and i think we did very well. I think verizon also did okay. We want to go out and keep an employer successful while you represent the members properly which is what we did at verizon. We came out with lots of jobs that we didnt have before. We had lots of work back from overseas and from nonunion contractors in the United States which was our goal going in. Draining our conversation today is David Shepherdson who is a reporter. So you went on strike after eight months of negotiation. What prompted the strike. Was it just that you werent making the progress you wanted at the bargaining table or just verizon dug in on some of the issues . It was about ten months of negotiation and we went on strike because we had no other choice per the company was in the exact same place ten months after they started from where they were on day one. Where that was was that they wanted every single thing that we had been able to gain over the years, they wanted it back and we werent going to give it to them. Particularly, our jobs jobs and our job security. Did you get where you needed on job security . One of the things rison said is that they have more flexibility in terms of how calls are routed to call centers. We actually agreed with that and thought that was a good idea because we maintain that all the jobs in the call center, as a matter fact, the, the jobs in the middle Atlantic Region were threatening to call close, im trying to remember, about 14 call centers in the midAtlantic Region and we were able to save every single one of those call centers in the midAtlantic Region. We thought that having calls answered by whoever was available, whenever they were available, as long as we could make their job secure, we thought that was a great idea and with that was great for customers and we were not all about, not only all about our jobs but we wanted to make sure verizons customers were taken care of also. We believe that helped take care of customer. In terms of benefits you have a higher pay raise and verizon had proposed a nearly 11 versus a six 1 2 over the contract. You were able to push back against pension cuts and things like that but you did have to accept some healthcare concessions which could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars over the next four years. We did make healthcare concessions that were worth hundreds of millions of dollars but we had been going to do that since sometime in january. That didnt seem to get the companies, we think the company was not about money, necessarily, they were about trying to crush the union. When you offer them cuts like we were offering them and they just ignore it, you can only come to that conclusion that its not about money, its about ideology thats what we think there were after and if thats what they were after, then they did pretty badly because they did not win. As you well no, verizon put several fullpage ads in newspapers during the strike saying that these workers are already making nearly six figures. We are doing pretty well and we never said that this thing was about money, because it was not about money, it was about jobs. No matter what youre making, if you dont have a job, it doesnt matter. We knew that going in and we knew that coming out. We succeeded in getting what we needed which was jobs and job security. Verizon has taken back work from overseas and contractors that will add up to about 1500 people on the east coast, which they only exist on the east coast now, but its going to be back 1500 new hundred new jobs for us. You and labor secretary tom perez did much of the negotiating. What was that like . Give us a sense . Ive known them for a while and weve done some negotiating together, but i have to say sec. Perez was fantastic in this. We also had the president of the ibw involved in that group. I dont think that we couldve gotten there without secretary perez. I think he did an outstanding job and just keeping everybody at the table and not walking away and making sure that everybodys points got across to the other side, i think we did a fantastic job. You said you knew lola mcadams for a while. He is the head of verizon. We are trying to improve the overall relationship between the union and the Company Going forward. I think lowell will tell you he discovered a relationship was worse than he even thought it was. The relationship with me and him has always been cordial but thats not the day to day relationship between the union and the company. I think they are truly going to improve that relationship because they realize a happy workforce is a good work for. How successful was verizon in training managers to do the work during the strike and how much do think this help hurt verizon rush mark. I think they did the best of job they couldve. I think it was next to impossible to do what they were trying to do because most of the management, especially lowlevel management that used to come up through the ranks doesnt now and they have people who dont know anything about the job trying to train them in a pretty technical job and quite honestly they did a pitiful job. Why do you think you were successful getting contractors. You know its been much harder and theyve taken a tougher line peered was it the support of president ial candidates or other people and why do you think they agreed to the deal after six weeks . I think they knew we were hurting them what the public. They had hurt themselves with the public. They had done things that were just anti consumer and the public knew it. I think the president ial candidates obviously helped us. I dont know how much they helped us, but theyve helped us and Lowell Mcadams going to war with Bernie Sanders probably didnt help him a lot. I mean lowell, not bernie. I think we kind of had the perfect storm here. They got hurt, verizon and very quickly after we went on strike and the cfo was out telling people that they were going to lose money in the Second Quarter and i think everything came together and we got a lot of public support because as you know and Everybody Knows, the public is now into understanding that corporations in this company are making too much money while regular people are not doing so well. I think that resonated with the public. What part of this contract, for the first time about 65 workers and about half of those in their Verizon Wireless stores are going to be under a contract. One of the benefits of that contract and does that pave the way for other stores to join the unions . I think the benefits, they got the first contracts is not the greatest contract that was ever written, but it does give them a voice on on the job and the ability to bargain. It gives them a pay raise that they would normally have not gotten and it changes the way theyre paid. It gives them a grievance and arbitration procedure. Gives just cause standard in any discipline they may have which is somewhat unheardof in Verizon Wireless. We have a bunch of stores in Brooklyn New York and one in massachusetts and will it give us the ability to organize other people at Verizon Wireless, the company i think was very cognizant of that fact and tried not to give us the opportunity to do that, but i think yes it will. My understanding is the strike would be able to land mine workers who were striking. As fewer and fewer people get to those landmines, how is their job security going to be affected . Of all it wasnt only landmine workers, it was also Verizon Wireless workers, the ones that represent 90 technicians in and around new york city in the stores i mention. What most people dont realize, without a landmine network, the Wireless Network is useless. It doesnt happen. We want them to succeed in the wireless world. Without the landline division or part of the company, wireless cant succeed. Thats why we want to continue the buildout in lots of places and we finally see that theyre going to do it in boston which they only announced a couple weeks ago which weve been after them to do for a few years now. We think it will be the only way they will be able to improve their Wireless Network 25g, which is what they want. I think they recognize that now and hopefully boston will be the first in a lot and buffalo and lots of other places and ive used all the b words now. Hopefully it will make it into the files network. Well see. So how has Overall Technology changed what cwa members do . How has it affected you . Ive been around this union for quite a long time. Weve always dealt with technology and some of the unions decided they were going to fight technology. We decided probably 50 years ago that it didnt make any sense to fight technology, that that you could not win if you fought technology. We decided probably 50 years ago that we should embrace technology and treaty all the companies that we work for two train them. That is what weve done in every Communications Company that we represent. We have Training Programs that just keep up with the ongoing technology changes. They update the new technology as quick as it comes out. Weve been doing well. 1968, what was that first job you had . I was repairman in the new york city. Were you a member of the union . I was, first day on the job. How did you grow your position throughout the years . I got elected president of the union june 8 of last year so today is my anniversary of president and someone sent me a tshirt in the office and it says cwa on top and that it has all these names crossed out from my positions. Ive been up through the ranks from a local to the national union. When did your work with new york telephone and as a repair man when youre union duties took over . Sometime in the late 70s, i guess. In terms of wire and lined business, what is the future . Could verizon sell off the wireline business . Does this make it more stable are less likely that verizon would sell the wireline business . I dont know that it does either. I dont really know that they want to sell off the wireline business and if they do they have no basis for it. Theyd have to be renting all kinds of technology from a company they sold too. I dont know that i make sense based on what they have left. Theyve sold companies all over the Companies Country and all they have left is the eastern seaboard. They think the eastern seaboard is a very lucrative market and i think they would want to keep it. Besides, i dont know who has enough money to buy what they have to sell if they want to sell it. Obviously verizon is offering these bundles trying to get people to get land lines and cable and internet. Or people just going to keep moving towards telephones question and. I think landmine, in the voice world may at some point go away. But you need it for broadband. People more and more want to have broadband capability. The fcc is backing up giving Companies Money to build out broadband in rural communities. My members do broadband and thats a big part of what we do. If you would comment and david represented about this earlier but comment on the state of unions in america today. What is your thought. Everybody knows unions are not growing. We are down to about 6 in the private sector. This fight just had with verizon could be a rallying cry for unions because we werent going after what companies try to tell people. There always after more money, will they want more money. We were out there saving middleclass jobs and communities because in every instance where a company, i dont care what can a company it was, they move jobs overseas or to nonunion contractors. They destroyed community because communities are built around people having these jobs. They are dependent on people having jobs in those local communities and that is precisely what we wanted to do and what we absolutely accomplished. As the campaign primary season winds down and you have endorsed bray sanders, your message here that you just said sounds a little bit like donald trump. Well may be Donald Trumps message sounds like mine. I didnt want to get into politics, but if i have to i will. Donald trump is kind of pushing that he is the workingclass candidate. Well its kinda hard for me to understand how a guy who is a billionaire is the workingclass candidate. Also hes adopted all these principles just recently, hes against trey but he makes ties in mexico and wherever else, Donald Trumps message is probably a lot like mine but i dont think Donald Trumps beliefs are. If Bernie Sanders leaves the campaign trail, where do you go . The only place we can go, Hillary Clinton. Do you think your members will support her even though there have been many strongly in favor of Bernie Sanders . I think if the choice is Hillary Clinton and donald trump theres no choice, its Hillary Clinton. What about the tpp which you have come out against as well. So has she. Is that a recent position or a longheld position . Its more recent than bernies, but its not really recent, about six months ago, she came out against the tpp after the actual language came out she said she studied it and she didnt agree with that. In your particular case when it comes to the communication workers of america, is that one of the outsourcing things that hurt in your point of you . When they have call centers in the philippines or india . Absolutely, during the the strike we got a Call Center Worker and we sent some strikers and one of my employees went to the philippines to find out what was going on. We found out that verizon was sending a lot more work to the philippines then we even knew they were. Companies do this all the time, for instance a few years ago we got a deal deal with at t to bring back all that work into the United States. We now have a deal with verizon that no more and were getting some of it back and were getting a lot of the contracted work in the United States back. Call centers is a place for all of these companies decide that they can shift american jobs overseas and verizon, in spite of their big ads in the newspapers saying american jobs for American Heroes, they were sending some american jobs over to the philippine hero some place. We them and they accused me of sending off strikers on a paid vacation by the union. People were sticking automatic weapons in your face is not a paid vacation. Its not my version of a paid vacation. What you mean automatic weapon. When we went over to the philippines, the guy who was employed by me when into a verizon Management Building and was asked to leave, which which he did and he gotten a van in the van took off on the public street and the verizon Security Force followed the van with people with automatic weapons from verizon security, stopped the van and held them until a Philippine Team showed up who they demanded arrest our strikers which they did, they took them into custody and held them for 15 minutes and told verizon they were crazy and to let our people go because we werent doing anything that broke the law or even came close to breaking the law. We were asking for a meeting with the management people at verizon. So, thats when they accused me of sending these people on a vocation. How motivated you think organized labor will be to get out to the polls this year . Two terms of democratic president always trying to retain power,. I think that its incumbent upon, and i hate the word, this is the most important election youve ever seen, but this might be the them most important election weve ever seen because i think if trump gets elected, not only is labor in trouble but this countrys in trouble and i think that labor has to get out and make sure that trump doesnt become the president of the United States. Democrats were unsuccessful in getting the employee free choice act approved after they had 60 votes in the senate. What would you like to see if the democrats retain the white house and retain partial control of congress . Im going to speak to the dnc Platform Committee and one of the things im going to bring up is exactly that. Employee free choice. Were not done with it and weve proven at at t that we just organized almost 8000 directv employees at at t bought because we have an agreement with them. They actually honor the agreement which is pretty unbelievable in this country. Most companies, even if they had one dont honor them. Weve proven that people want to join the union if you just take the fear in the harassment out from management and they will join unions. Weve had this agreement with at t for a number of years. Weve organized 55000 people at at t wireless and we think that it would work for the rest of the country. We have done polls and other people have done pulls, people getting fired and harassed and you name it. You mentioned some of the outsourcing thats taking place, company jobs moving to mexico or china. Do you feel like the climate is changing . To think businesses will reconsider this outpouring of manufacturing . I think the Political Climate in this country, i dont know if its because of Ernie Sanders or trump or who, but the Political Climate has changed and i think people are starting to take notice of companies who do this and a lot of those companies will have a hard time if they continue to do it. I think verizon has recognized that. You are headquartered here. , how much time do use bend with the fcc or with congress and what is your opinion of those bodies . People who work for me spend time with the fcc. I dont spend a lot of time with the fcc. I spent quite a bit of time with congress because of the makeup of the congress, Everybody Knows you cant get anything done in congress because of the makeup of congress. As you said, when we had 60 seats in the senate we couldnt get it done then. Some of the rules in the senate and congress have need to be changed so you can get people to get work done. Hopefully we will get a Democratic Senate and a democratic president and Democratic House of representative. You think there should be a rewrite of the Current Telecom lock . How much time do you have . As much as you need. I think there should be a rewrite. Theres lots of stuff that was missing. They just have to be fixed. Broadband, being a universal service in helping people figure out how theyre going to pay for it. People making less than 25000, i think about 22 of them have the ability to get on the internet. We have kids who cant get on the internet at home. Thats a crime in the richest country in the world. We have to figure out a way to fix that. I think we have to change some of our telecom rules to make sure that stuff like that gets fixed. Time for one more question. A followup to what you said, the fcc has proposed suspending the program to allow, but its not a lot of money. Will that be enough money for people to get on . I dont think so. We have to figure out other ways for people to make money. Just like 100 years ago when people had telephones for the first time. We figured out how to do that. We now had to figure out how kids and people who cant afford it have an ability to get on the internet and use the internet for all its worth. The education that can be had on the internet is just so important to our children. How do we not figure out a way to let them do that . From a new york telephone repairman to the president , he has been our guest on the communicators. Looking live at the u. S. The white house demanded that the Republican Controlled Congress passed legislation blocking extremist from obtaining weapons like the one used in the shooting. Its from the press briefing this afternoon with josh earnest and the issue of the orlando shooting making its way already into the discussions on capitol hill. They are tweeting that house chaplain. The nation is again tragically impacted by a mass shooting and also understanding that there are reports that the appropriations bill may be delayed or slow down by a gun amendment that may be presented, particularly by democrats. They are reporting on that this afternoon. The houses in this afternoon. They are coming in at 4 00 oclock eastern. We have some congressional perspective as well on the shooting over the weekend from florida republican.
