ccluster where have you been here in the second half. >> dexter mccluster if you can hold him at bay within now you have a 14-point lead, you know ole miss has got to throw the football to get back in the game. >> dave: here is mccluster trying to stretch it to the right side. whoa what a hit by marcus washington! he has been beat a couple of times today by hodge. i think there might have been a little ager in that hit. >> andre: well, you get chris white chasing him down, and he runs him right into marcus washington, and you never see dexter mccluster get hit like that. wow what a lick! >> dave: second and14. intercepted! for the second time today! at the 24-yard line. listen to scott field! it's all going in the way of mississippi state right now. >> andre: when you can play two deep coverage and controlling the run the way the bulldogs have up front, now any tip toed ball in the secondary, there are bodies and an extra defender around. charles mitchell right on the spot where the football was tipped. >> dave: dixon, take this handsoff, will keep it, down to the 15-yard line. picks up 12. trahan drags him down. let's wait on the flag. >> andre: it was such a good take to dixon, you thought he was giving it to dix. >> referee: hold be, number 3 on the offense. >> dave: that's the second penalty today against mississippi state. let's go back to our good hands play of the day brought to you bial state. >> andre: right here trying to go to summers. extra defensive back in the game on the back edge, and it's -- this is charles mitchell, right there, dan mullen can barely contain himself right now. >> dave: first down inside the 15 at the 13. lockett brings him down, but another outstanding play take by the quarterback, chris relf! >> andre: well, it's basically been a two-man party, chris relf, anthony dixon. they're going to invite somebody else. nice job here finding the marker. mississippi state hard to contain right now. thanksgiving to the five, down to the four yard line. -- dixon to the five, down to the four-yard line. >> andre: right now ole miss getting hit in the mouth, and they're making 'em like it. >> dave: that's why they call their dog bully the bulldog. >> andre: that's it. >> dave: dixon, down to the 1. first and goal! scott finally able to tackle dixon before he picks up the touchdown. >> andre: boy, you've got to give it up to this offensive line of mississippi state. we talked about the blocks that have been thrown in this game. brignone, jenkins has had an outstanding game, and lawrence, they have made the difference in this football game for the mississippi state bulldogs. >> dave: stall washington denied entry to the end zone. they're going to call it a fumble some lamar comes out of there with the football, and they're going to give it to the rebels at the 1! oh, my! what a turn of events! and now there is a quiet over the stadium that we haven't heard all afternoon. >> andre: boy, had a chance to really put a stamp on things down there inside the one-yard line. let's have a look at it. you see stalworth right here trying to go airborne. football indeed comes out. >> dave: that is a fumble. >> andre: that is fumble, my friend, and the senior defensive tackle comes up with a fumble recovery. >> dave: now the remembers have 99 yards to go. and now ole miss with some room to operate. >> andre: a lot of teams are afraid to throw the football when you're babied up that far into the end of your field. i like it. back up, take a shot. if you have an experienced quarterback who knows get the football out, you can throw the football down here. >> dave: mccluster has the first down and a lot more. ran out of bounds by jonathan banks. >> andre: he's been quiet, he's been hit, but yet, still, you get him the football, he can still make the big play for you, right here. make one guy, two miss, and now it's the speed. getting himself out of bounds. >> dave: rolls right,ly ting it up, looking for hodge, nearly picked off! >> andre: that would have been number 6 broomfield, who had 5 in e08 in e9, nearly add another one. >> andre: so much so much pressure and so fast. looked like he was expecting hodge to continue down the field. broomfield right here almost makes a nice play. >> dave: mccluster, making a couple of guys miss, including broomfield. he'll pick up about six. >> andre: when you look at it, coming up on about 7 minutes, plenty of time for ole miss. >> dave: with that turnover, you make this a very interesting final 7 minutes. >> andre: big third down here. pretty much four-down territory i would think for ole miss going forward. >> dave: houston nutt wants to make sure they have everybody in the right spot. >> andre: with the momentum that the bulldogs have on offense, i think everybody down is important for ole miss right here. you've got to have something positive going forward each and every down. >> dave: time to look at our liberty mutual play of the game. we go back to an outstanding touchdown grab by shay. >> andre: you look at it, corner of the end zone, you think marcus washington knocks it away. no, shay hodge tips it back to himself. comes down with the foot bull for a touchdown reception. >> dave: what a catch. >> >> andre: that was nice. we've seen some spectacular plays in the football game. that one to shay hodge. bumphis has made a couple of excellent plays in the game. anthony dixon. their first touchdown of the game. >> dave: that is nine games now that hodge has had five or more catches in the game this year. >> andre: big year for hodge. >> dave: hodge with the catch, but we'll see what this is all about at the line of scrimmage. >> andre: when the they stop the play, it's usually for false start. >> referee: before the snap, false start, number 71 on the offense, that penalty is five yards from the previous spot. still third down. >> andre: will make this third down a little bit toucher to pick up for ole miss. going to sit in there ask wait for th wai or the football. [ fans cheering ] >> dave: second tackle on the fly. now 3rd down and 10. now it's third down and 10. >> dave: listen to this crowd. what a football game. over the middle within it's caught! he got hit right in the rib cage and didn't let go of the pigskin! >> andre: and beat a good football player, wright, right up the middle. snead look okay for hodge. incomplete! hodge says he caught it! they will rule it incomplete at the 15! >> andre: that's a tough angle to judge it. remember, it has to be indispucable video evidence. >> reporter: the play is under rear view. ole miss will not be charged with a time-out. >> dave: every play can be reviewed in college football. we'll see if there's enough to overturn this baby. >> andre: i don't know if his leg, like, may have kicked it back into his -- you know, right to where he could possess the football a little bit. >> dave: the ruling on the field is it's an incomplete pass. >> referee: after further review, the ruling on the field is confirmed, pass is incomplete. >> dave: snead under pressure,, dropped at the 30! ferguson came flying in from the defensive end spot to pick up the sack! his first of the year, and it couldn't have come at a better time! >> andre: boy, did he close fast! the sophomore from miami, florida, right here, so fast that jevan snead could not even get rid of the football. once he turns the corner against bobby macy, the freshman right tackle, he is on the back of jevan snead. third town. again, snead hit as he throws. third down. you you've got guys in there just pinning their ears back and turning the corner on jevan snead. you have to go for it here with 5:47, i don't think there's any question. >> andre: kind of surprised there with as aggressive an approach as the bulldogs have taken. defensively, thought you run a nice little draw to mccluster. now you're forced to throw the football. >> dave: andthey'vee getting the pressure put just the front four. >> dave: pass is caught at the 41. city that's a first down! wow, what a throw and catch, and the rebels are still in business! >> andre: boy, a big cushion given up by anderson, the sophomore corner to that side, and you can't give shay hodge that much room. >> dave: snead there throw it again. picked off by broomfield. stays on his feet! touchdown! that's the ball game! >> dave: 64-yard interception . >> dave: 64-yard interception return by corey broomfield. the point after is up and good. it is a 21-point advantage for the bulldogs here at home. this time had played five top 25 teams here at home this year. and the bulldogs playing like they're the team in the top 25. corey broomfield with six picks in 2009. this one won't soon be forgotten by the bulldog by the bulldogs faithful or their head coach. dave mississippi state 41-20. dan mullen didn't . >> dave: dan mullen didn't want his club to forget that 45- 0 loss last year to ole miss, and they haven't. this series is 106 meetings long. it has just been a shocking day. you just didn't see this coming. >> dave: bradley in the open. field. he's out to the 48-yard line. andre, let's go back tot that interception for a td. >> andre: corey broomfield, you see him here. he's a freshman, baiting a quarterback like snead. so he's basically tilling you as a quarterback i'm going to give company the out route, but just kind of bates him into throwing it right here. he brains on the football, and now -- he breaks on the football, and then into the end zone. >> dave: how about dexter mccluster! welcome to the party, dexter. touchdown ole miss! >> andre: hang on. it's not over yet. >> dave: you! >> andre: that's the way that ole miss can get back in the football game. 4:56 left, a couple of scores down. if you score fast, it doesn't matter. >> dave: dexter mccluster in the open field. he needs space. that's all he needs is a little bit of space, and she a touchdown waiting to happen. >> andre: he is such a weapon. >> dave: point after is up and good. joshua sheen connects. now we're back to the 14-point game. 4:56 to play. dexter mccluster has been very, very quiet here in the second half. >> andre: what's the old saying? just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water? >> dave: yeah. the sharks are out. >> andre: the screen pass out in the open feed, he's out in open space, one cut, one missed tackle, on the third level of your defense, and there's no one on the field that's going to catch dexter mccluster. >> dave: chaney had him. but then again, you say that a lot, a lot of guys have had dexter mccluster this year. >> andre: washington had a shot at him as well. looks like banks was the last line of defense, and he chewed up that cushion pretty quick. >> dave: now if you're mississippi state, you have to get a couple of quick touch downs here, and they're going to hang on to the football. >> andre: yeah, this is the first order of business for the bulldogs. >> dave: taken by charles mitchell who had two interceptions today, so now mississippi state will have it at the ole miss 45, and it's all about the clock now. >> andre: how about the job of the defensive coordinator for ole miss? until that play with dexter mccluster, had really held him in check pretty much most of this ball game, but right now thinks just right back to the offense of the bulldogs, and it's been yes, sir relf and anthony dixon and the offensive line of mississippi state. >> dave: here is dixon, met at the line of scrimmage. dropped right there. ole miss uses a time-out. they have two left. they will let the clock tick and try to stop it after second down, i'm sure. credits relf, what a job he has done. played about three quarters of this game, and he has produced. >> yeah, came in, led them on a field goal drive to tie it up in the first drive of the solve. and then two touchdown pass, be a touchdown run to go along with it. he has been spectacular. >> dave: second down and 9. back inside, trahan with him down to to the 37-yard line. boy, trahan and cornell have been tackle machines today. trahan now has 9. >> andre: let's go back and take a look at the day that chris relf has had, starting with the touchdown pass to marcus green. and then again, bumphis breaking tackles, finding his way to the end zone, and then this one. we've seen to tim tebow do it, and now chris relf, and that kind of quarterback lied by the offensive line, take it, direct snap, find your way to the end zone. nice afternoon by chris relf, the sophomore quarterback. >> dave: you mentioned the defensive coordinator. not many teams have been able to figure this ole miss defense out the last six weeks of the off-season. but their best defense has been been their offense taking the ball away from ole miss today. >> andre: they have won in time of possession, and you see him in still couchling up his defense, but they have played outstanding on that side of the football, when you talk about a weapon like dexter mccluster, and the way shay hodge has played on the outside. >> dave: the first down. >> andre: that's the frustrating thing for a defensive unit to not be able to stop the one, they've had their way up front. >> dave: and ole miss has done that all year. this is the first game they've really been chew $ed up in that department. >> dave: well, that just shows you what a great scheme that mullen came up with for this defense. >> dave: dixon, looking toker, to the 0 15, stays in bounds like a heady senior would do. i'm a general manager watching this kid play, i'm getting his phone number. >> andre: yeah, would be hard to pass up anthony dixon in next year's draft. that's for sure. >> dave: that stiff arm, we say it last week in arkansas on a 70-yard touchdown run. >> andre: have to come up with a name for that baby. >> dave: clock under three minutes now. just a couple of good blocks. relf some room to run. >> andre: you know you are clicking on all cylinders when the you have the offensive line giving high fives to each other, firsts pumping. they love that stuff. the offensive line, when you can mix it up, turn the football game over to the big guys up front. boy, that is playing at the highest level right there. >> dave: second down and short. and dan mullen wants a time- out. play clock was at one. with 2:03 left on the clock. clock. it is 41-27 . today's s.e.c. network game has been brought to you by... >> dave: a great day if you are a bulldog fan, not so great if you are >> 2:03 to foe, let's check in with kara. >> well, dave, you're old hat at egg bowl, it's my first time. i was told to look for the trophy. the trophy has changed hands from ole miss to mississippi state, but the bulldogs be waiting. they do not want to bring it out yet. after that dez touchdown, they're holding off a little bit. we should see it after this possession, however. so the egg bowl trophy has chained sides, but it's in hiding right now. >> dave: there is dixon who is met, loses about five on the play. lewis comes up, plays it well. you know, dan mullen since he got this job, did not want his club to forget what happened last year. doesn't even refer to ole miss by their school name, calls it the school up north. the put a clock in the locker room the day he government the job counting down to this game. it has been going since he started the job. every day the players see this. beat the team to up north. >> andre: and it doesn't just take place, you know, here. it's a battle in recruiting, a lot of these players for both -- you recruit the same players pretty much from the state of mississippi, and it's an ongoing battle year-round between these two universities. >> dave: i tell people all the time, unless you're in one of these games, you out to understand the passion here. it is really one of those things dilute don't forget when you come to this rival re. it is a small state in terms of population, but there are -- there isn't a more intense rivalry in the country. >> andre: been a great game. and you warned me, and it has not -- as they say, it has not disappointed. >> dave: here is dixon, stutter steps, did he get the first down? if he did, that was an amazing run! >> andre: unbelievable. that's a guy at 6'1", 235 pounds. >> dave: look at that. i mean, it's just an amazing effort by a guy that's wrapping up his mississippi state career. >> andre: watch a nice kickout block right there, and just the effort. >> dave: and it is a first down. how about that run, that's laying it on the line right there for your football team. wanting to win, wanting to get it done. going to leave everything out on the field. and my last college football game, first half you see it, just 17 yards, boy did he turn that baby around in a hurry. >> dave: that's what he does to you. it may not look pretty in the first half, but the crowd booing because they want dixon to get the touchdown. they're in the v formation. they're going to run the clock out on first down. there will be no need to put another one in the end zone. they're bringing out the golden egg. that's what they play for, since 1927. how about dan mullen? he will enjoy it. houston nutt enjoyed his first egg bowl game last year in oxford, now dan mullen gets a little taste. we've done a few ball games this year, and in a lot of different places, and i don't know if it's ever been this joycey and had this much energy in a stadium all year long. this has been fun to a part of. >> dave: that will do it for the ball game. with 20 seconds left to play, the bulldogs storm the field. the senior out of georgia with the trophy on top of his head. high above so everybody in the stadium can get a look! the game is over! bulldogs 41, rebels 27! oh. announcer: you don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. there are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you. so my uncle calls and he says he's dizzy and he's losing his balance. so, i'm like, "unc, you want me to take you to a doctor?" he's like, "nah--i'm going to look up the symptoms." i said your symptoms are, you're dizzy and you're losing your balance. so he says, "i can't get on the internet because my arm is numb." i said, "well, use your good arm and dial 911!" comedian: stroke's no joke. if you or someone you love is showing symptoms of stroke don't wait 'cause it might be too late. dial 911. time lost is brain lost. >> dave: mississippi state, a top 25 team, working all mississippi state gets it done in the 106th edition of the egg bowl. it was the chris relf anthony dixon show here in the second half that propelled the bulldogs to a win. dixon goes out with a bank. for the bulldogs, they finished the regular season 3-7, 3-5 in league play. it has been a great year here. the party continues in starkville. the bulldogs win it 41-27. so long from starkville. rest of the crew, andre ware, cara so long from starkville. have welcome to another edition of washington post live weekend. ahead, remember one of the biggest fixtures of the dc sports scene. also, i catch up with legendary wide receiver jerry rice. all of that and more. washington post live presented by the green turtle starts right now. thanks for tuning in to washington post live weekend, presented by the green turtle. a sad start to the week, as a dc icon passed away. ieb poland's death was felt throughout the entire city. as the news broke, we caught up with some of the biggest names and more on hissing. >> porter: phil, you played for the man, knew him well. what were your thoughts today when you got the news? >> actually i got in my car on the way to the game and i heard on 980 sports, talking about mr. poland and what he had done and when you hear those kind of, that kind of news reporting, you just -- you get gut wrenched and you get that feeling and then finally, they made this statement, that he had passed earlier today. and i guess just a slew of memories just goes back that you think about from the first meeting to all of the interactions in between. >> reporter: one of the things that stands out is loyalty. we know that if you were an abe guy, you're an abe guy for life. you played with him for several years, battled injury issues s that what stands out to you, or is there an anecdote, a few memories? what really jumps out about him? >> i guess i would say passionate. he's so passionate about his involvement in the community, everything that he's done, every time one he oh during the nighttime when i'm walking down the street and i see how lit up this whole area is, i think of what mr. pollin did to get the ball rolling. i remember my first two or three years, playing with johnson and wes, and we have our practice before the playoffs start. he comes into the practice. he watches the practice. certainly gives words of encouragement. he let's us know that he's with us, and even when things were bad, i mean he would always make sure that he would call some of us or come to practice. he wasn't there all the time. it just seemed like when you needed him, he would show up and try to give you that extra bit of encouragement. let's go to john feinstein with the washington post, a man who knows the family well. john, when you heard the news today, what was the first thing that came to your mind, my man? >> just sadness. i mean we've all known that abe has been sick for a good long while, so it's not a shock in that sense. he was 85. but just sadness, you know, really that he didn't live to see the wizards win another title, to get back to the level they were at in the 1970s when they went to the finals three years out of five and one nba title in 1978. even though he doesn't own the caps anymore, i'm sure he was greatly enjoying the revival of the franchise and would have loved to have seen a stanley cup come to washington. he came close in 1998, of course, when the caps made it to the finals before losing to the red wings. >> i know with the media, owners have a difficult relationship. did you get to feel like you knew the man? >> i don't know if i would say i knew the man. i spent time with him. i wrote about him often. i did a lengthy magazine piece on him nears and years ago, and it's interesting because i actually dealt with him first, ivan, when i was covering politics. and he had, you know, the building of the capital center in prince george's county was very controversial. a lot of the politicians i dealt with weren't necessarily big fans of abe pollin. some of the stuff i wrote about him, quoting politicians often, wasn't that flattering. so abe and i didn't always have, you know, a buddy-buddy relationship, but i thought he was always very honest whenever i dealt with him and willing to answer questions, and also, and i don't know how much you dealt with him, ivan, because you came to town much later, but i think people would tell you, abe would get in your face if he disagreed with you. he would tell you, i think you were wrong. here's why i think you were wrong. here's why i did what i did. and i always respected that. i've always had respect for people, who if they don't like what you say or something you write, they came up to you and say i disagree, and abe never had a problem doing that. >> mike, you got to know him, wrote a lot about him. take me back to the michael jordan situation. you broke that story about michael jordan being let go of his duties as the front office -- was abe-- >> well, i got a call-- >> -- happy with you? >> i got a call from a guy i know. i had been snooping around. i heard things were bad with the wizards, michael wasn't getting along with teammates. there was a big fisher involved and a real wedge between the people that abe hired, susan o mali's and the people that michael hired and they were clashing on all levels. basically michael wanted to bring in his people at some point and take over the organization. he had no use for susan and moted, good people that abe had basically been with forever. abe pollin was about nothing else other than his philanthropy and his team, he was about loyalty. abe pollin was loyal to a fault. so i had been snooping around a little bit, made some calls. one day i get a call and ray guy says michael jordan will be fired on wednesday at a meeting with ted leon and abe pollin. of course i said that's crazy. nobody fires michael jordan. he goes, no it will happen. i proceeded to make some more calls. in fact, i knew before michael jordan was going to be fired. he didn't believe he was going to be fired. ted didn't believe it when he walked into the meeting. i'm sure it wasn't payback for michael's shouting him down at a labor negotiation and treating him like he was, he was just a greedy owner that didn't care about anything but his money and his franchise. i also think he didn't think he was going to be much of a gm. people to this day are split in this town over whether he used michael jordan, whether michael jordan used him. bottom line is, it takes some huts pa to acquire michael jordan. >> turned out as gm, probably the right thing to do. capital center was his baby. he, he created that. then moving downtown with his own money was a financial risk. i know living in this city, getting anything done in this city is not easy. getting your garbage picked up is not easy, let alone running a school system, police force, everything that goes on in the system. he got this done and when it's done, how proud was he of what happened to that area? >> you know, certainly it seems like ray no-brainer at this point. but at the time, it was a big risk. there were a number of people, closest advisors, thought he was crazy for doing it. and he, he always had a goal to put an arena downtown. that's originally where he wanted to put the capital center back in the '70s and they couldn't get a deal done. he an opportunity to build a second arena. not many people get a chance to do that. he put it downtown where he wanted to do it, with his own money. that's something people need to remember. there weren't a lot of tax dollars involved in this. but, but the change down there is remarkable. it's basically dc's version of times square. he was certainly proud of that. mrs. pollin is certainly proud of that, the entire family is proud of that. it's, it was a big risk, but they took it and they have revitalized this, that part of town in a dramatic way. >> his significance to this area cannot be overstated. avenues man who not only brought two professional teams to the area, but also played a huge role in cleaning up downtown dc. a man who will definitely be missed. abe pollin, gone at the age of 85. up next, i hit the gridiron with one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, jerry rice. that's next from washington post live weekend, presented by the green turtle continues. girl: my name is emily and in 7 years... i'll be an alcoholic. all: hi, emily. announcer: kids who drink before age 15 are 5 times more likely to have alcohol problems when they're adults. so start talking before they start drinking. thanks for watching washington post live weekend presented by the green turtle. we're in a day and age where wide receivers are known almost as well for what they do off the field as what they do on it. but my next guest is simply one of the best of the best and holds practically every major record as a wideout. check out my interview with the legendary jerry rice. jerry, thanks for joining us. you stayed active, saw you with dancing with the stars, you stayed in shape doing good things. tell us what this partnership with gillette and how fans can win super bowl tickets. >> i have teamed up with gillette and the gillette fusion mvp locker room giveaway. you can win two super bowl tickets. you can also get, you know, exclusive behind the scenes of players after the football game, in the locker room, but it's going to be, you know, selected locker rooms. you get the gillette fusion mvp razor, which i have very sensitive skin, so when i shave, you know, it works for me and that's why i'm teaming up with, you know, gillette. you can go to nfl.com/lockerroom and get all of the information. >> one of the things is giving fans an inside look at the locker rooms. obviously post game, but through your preparation, that was a big part of what you did. you were meticulous, first to arrive, last to leave. as you reflect back on your career, what was that like for you? the time you played it? >> the thing about after the game, you get so many emotions, you know, because you might go out there, you might not win the football game. and you're going to see the interaction there. but, you know, the celebration, when you win the football game, is just like the fan being right in there. and i think gillette and also the nfl, they are doing a fantastic, you know, part here because they just bring fans a little bit closer to the game and, you know, i remember super bowl xxiii, you know, after the football game, i ran into the locker room. all my emotions, you know, just came out of me because you play the game to win super bowls. and that was my first one. so, you know, fans will get a chance to experience that. >> and one of the cool things there is fans can see the presentation of game balls after the game. i'm pretty sure you had a few in your career. did you keep them? do you have them? how many do you have? i mean did you bother to count? >> oh, my god. i couldn't tell you how many game balls i have received, but, you know, it was because of my teammates. those guys took me to the position where i could make those incredible catches and win football games. so, you know, i give credit to my teammates. but i have been rewarded, you know, so many game balls and i, you know, i have had a lot of success in the nfl with all the records i have broken, but it has a lot to do with the players that i play with. >> you were on great teams. it's funny, lot of people forget as a young receiver, as a rookie, you struggled a little bit. you had criticism, dropped passes. there's a local guy, darius haywood bay, playing for the raiders, one of your former teams, fast guy, having a tough year, dropped some balls. if you could give him some advice, what would you tell him so he could get his career going? >> i think just keep working hard. that's basically what you have to do and, you know, with him coming out of college, they had questions about his hands. so he's going to have to really work hard to catch extra footballs and build confidence in himself that he can get the job done. i had a chance to watch him a little bit this weekend and it looked like he just did not have any coordination out there on the football field. you know, he didn't have any confidence. and you can tell when a receiver is letting the ball get to his body instead of extending his hands out to meet the football. >> you're staying in shape. are you available to work out with him? he's taking good money, jerry! >> i'm always working out. i'm always working out, because i'm one of those guys that after you step away from the game, if you see me down the road, i'm going to look the same. you know, you see so many guys, they have put on a little extra pounds, you know, or two, couple extra pounds or two. so -- but, you know, i'm still working out and i'm sure i could, you know, really work with this young man and help him out and, you know, just teach him about the knowledge of the game and just being a constant pro on the football field. >> yeah, interesting when you reflect on what you did, so many records. 13-time pro bowler, multiple championships. 197 career touchdown catches. seems unbreakable. randy moss is about 50 behind you. do you think he's going to be the guy that catches you and breaks some of those records? >> i really don't worry about records because i didn't play it for that reason. i played it because i loved it. it was the passion. it was, you know, the thought of going out there, entertaining so many people. so if he should break all my records, i'll be the first one to congratulate him. but he's going to have to work his butt off because he's at 142 right now and i was at 197. so he, he's going to have to come strong, you know, towards the end. >> it's interesting, guys like isaac bruce, tory holt, brett favre, they are still playing. are you still tempted? do you still think about coming back? >> i'm tempted every day, every day, you know, when i wake up and i go to work out and i'm feeling good. i feel explosive. i feel like i could get back on that football field, run the routes, make the catches and all of that. but then i have to say, wow, you know, i, i played it for 20 years. you know, just pass it on to those younger guys, let them have it. and i got everything i wanted out of football. but i have on so many other things going on out of football right now. it's already been a tough season for the wiz kids. up next, we break down what they need to do to turn things around, when washington post live weekend returns. welcome back. next week on the show, we have the wise guy, mike wise. doc walker joins us to break down the redskins-eagles, plus former redskins gm charlie castle, looking at what moves the skins need to make to finish the season off strong. all of that and more on washington post live presented by the green turtle sports bar and grill. monday through friday at 5:00, again at 11:30, only on comcast sportsnet. now, before we go, take a look back at the week that was on dvr rewind. the loss to the cowboys, i didn't expect them to win the game anyway. >> when the redskins came to town, we just slaughtered them. 7-6 in the last minute! he knocked out two jumpers and the offensive rebound. >> steve: carron butler with the jumper. the wizards go back up by 2. washington looking for just its second win on the road this year, only one and that was in the opener. dallas, good defense by nick young and jamison slips in for the rebound. up ahead to nick against chalmers and he is called for traveling >> phil: chalmers may have gotten away with some contact. i thought that nick had made a good move. let's take a second look. he has a tough job of having to catch that ball. boy, that's either a jump ball or a foul. >> reporter: jie don't see travel. i've seen other guys travel a lot worse than that. we'll leave it at that. here is d wade under neat. they'll call a jump ball for both guys. >> the other night, after the philadelphia game, flip saunders made the distinction on nick young playing. he said not the 20 points that kept him in there but it was his defense. tonight, going against one of the stop scorers. he has his hands full trying to stay with dwyane wade and minimizing his effectiveness. >> reporter: yoot comedian clearly made an impression on you, phil. here is butler trying to draw contact, tries it on the reverse lay-in. nicely done >> phil: carron has been very effective the first four minutes >> steve: they took him after the sophomore year in u-conn, was the 10th pick overall, went to the lakers for shaq. beasley, drives, puts it up, missed it, rebound o'neal. >> phil: jermaine o'neal has been playing well, especially in the rebounding department. he has been scoring, averaging double digits over the last five games with this team >> steve: he has eight on the year for average. gilbert for 3, way strong. the hook shot is up no good. tips it again, up by jamison, one more time, haywood can't hold on to it and he fouls chalmers. first personal on haywood. and miami will have it on the side. good effort >> phil: yes, i love the hustle on his part. jamison keeping the ball alive, keeping it away from own bone exhibit and nearly came up with that rebound but can't control it. >> reporter: taken away bearenas, good defensive play. here is butler, 2 on 1, nice pass for young >> phil: almost made that pass too late. he had to catch it quickly before he was surrounded by defenders. >> reporter: wizards by 4, 12 to 8, 6:45 to play in the quarter. beasley turns and scores. averaging just over 14 points and about 7 rebounds a game. last year arranged 14, 5 1/2 boards as a rookie. nice move by caron but his shot is off and d-wade with the rebound. >> phil: staying down on that man. jermaine o'neal converts at the rim there but nick young made the cardinal sin of getting -- leaving his feet on that pump fake. dwyane wade one of the league leaders getting to the free throw line. that's going to help him go to the free throw line >> steve: four unanswered points by miami have themtied at 12. out of bound and back to miami. so the heat have been all over the offensive glass and they have come back to . >> reporter: wizards had a four-point lead. miami has come back with four unanswered points. flip saunders takes a timeout. now we are tied at 12. let's take a look at the keys for tonight's game >> phil: washington had that comfortable lead but turnovers got the heat back into the game so they must value the basketball and also free throw shooting, washington number 5 in free throw attempts but they are only 17th in free throw percentage. the heat one of the league leaders in getting to the free throw line. they have to get them out of the middle and also at the line. the heat, with wade number 4 scorer in the lead. the last five games, that percentage dipped to under 40%. they want him to continue to dominate like he has around the league. when they outrebound their opponent, the heat are 6-1, when they have more fast break points than their opponent, a perfect 5-0. one of those instances was that game, that meeting back here, i believe on the 10th. washington gave up the steal which led to fast break baskets and that got them back into the game. >> steve: he missed three straight games with a lower back strain. caron butler back in the washington line-up after missing the 76ers game with a strained ankle. the heat last played on november 21st at san antonio, prior to tonight >> phil: james jones who replaced him had a great game in that orlando meeting, had 16 points. he is a major league shooter >> steve: 16 and 30 minutes of play for james jones. wade is fouled by nick young. >> phil: all that's going to do is put you out of position. that will turn the ball over. these guys are too good in handling the ball. when you reach, that takes you out of position and makes you vulnerable to drive. >> what do have you to do then? back up a step so he doesn't turn the corner on you>> no, no. you want toin right him to shoot. when you reach, that invites him to cross over, go through his legs, whatever he's going to do. that invites his drive. you are trying to contain, try to keep him inside, force him to jump >> steve: butler in the corner, gilbert down low. jamison guarded by beasley. quick shot by an ann talk. >> >> reporter: miami ball with 9 to shoot >> phil: good hustle gilbert who was trailing chalmers but quickly made up the distance and got a piece of that >> steve: here is wade on the baseline challenged by young, shoots it over but beasley is there for the rebounds. his fading jumper is not there. jamison pulls it down. jam soip and butler have four points apiece. nick young has four. gilbert has yet to score. butler inside, blocking foul called. and he will shoot two. it's on beasley. >> phil: caron butler being driven along the baseline. beasley slips over. watch here. very close call. >> steve: car ron shooting 81% from the field for the season, 44 of 54 i wizards also have the number 1 free throw shooter in the league in randy foye at 20 of 21. caron makes one of two but jamison tips it in, a three- point play >> phil: he always has that feel for the ball and quickly rebounds. >> steve: wizards by 5, their largest lead. >> phil: chalmers, leads him on the outside. >> reporter: nick young, fading shot, bounces off the rim, no good. jam soip fighting for it, it wizards comes up with it, an antanw comes up with it. washington needs to get more and more position. >> reporter: jew mentioned the fact that he played more defense in that philly game. i have seen him play more inspired defense than he has in the first three years in the league >> phil: you have to know that tough shot with jermaine o'neal, you have to know, playing strong defense, that's the route to go, if you want more minutes. >> steve: 8 points for o'neal and beasley. arenas is fouled on the play >> phil: boy, jermaine o'neal never cleared that restricted area. gilbert so good at this. gilbert dips that shoulder, makes sure he gets the contact, turns the body, protects the ball, keeps it away from the shot blocker. now he has a chance for a three- point. again, o'neal does not clear the restricted area. gilbert gets the contact and the basket. >> steve: he had 17 point and 8 assists againstphilly >> phil: nick has averaged -- three games before that, he averaged over 10 attempts per game. so it is really incumbent upon him to get to the line. he certainly helps the team when he does that, especially when he starts making those free throws >> steve: here is javale mcgee who had a tremendous game against philadelphia with a blocked shot and he starts with one there. bad pass for arenas to nick young and they turn it over. here is nude udonis haslem. >> phil: when you start losing your focus and concentration >> steve: time. jermaine o'neal has been playing like an all-star tonight. in fact, he has played that way the last fffffffffffffff you ever think about buying a bigger place?
