Have that strength that america tel always had the tax playtex. If you love and their cuts this is it. When i am on the weekend it is the authors. Watching the neck tv the best television for a serious readers. We could have a long your conversation. Booktv begins braying author after author after of their. Fresh shot the heels of the democratic debate to be modeled with the same integrity puc in this rule as those to the new thinkers since 1986. [cheers and applause] more then 2 Million People tune in daily to the Weekly Public Affairs programs and it looks back at the groundbreaking interviews with everyone from president abutment to fidel castro. Taught and critically about the key issues affecting the world today. The timing could not be overstated. Also shining a light on the influence of hispanics. Mexico city native he has been instrumental to present against mosquitos. But i employ a number of first generation immigrants and i have seen firsthand how this group trust him as his box for. He has eight and b warrants, with 100 of the most influential people calling him in america. But as a friend i can say he is a pretty awesome father. Please join me to welcome jorge ramos. [cheers and applause] obviously i know him. [laughter] thanks for being here. We will do this in english a little once a while in spanish but we will be together for the next hour silence take advantage. The ada is i will speak for a few minutes and there are two microphones to this and your comments. So lets have a conversation because right now the fact were in the middle of a very intense campaign. I have a country that has no democracy or that in the last 10 years 80 journalist had been killed. Were talking about mexico. I cannot criticize the president of the misstates or your friend donald trump or Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders or marco rubio but that is the of the idea of democracy i go home and go to the supermarket and absolutely nothing happens said his the way it works i because i am a dinosaur. [laughter] in die and making asia huge effort not to be a dinosaur but i am. Because what i asked from you. Each one of these has a name. Maybe five donald trump overseer. [laughter] but what is really but watched the news cast every single day at 6 30 p. M. I am a dinosaur because but that is no longer valid. A meeting is gigi because there is a migration and thanks to cspan2 have an interest in what were doing. But there is saying accretion her and mediation asked permission but are you on Facebook Live right now . [cheers and applause] i will tell you what is happening. For the last super tuesday we were broadcasting in english at the same time we decided to broadcast on Facebook Live but half of those people that watch what we do do not even watch tv. And that is amazing. If youre starting journalism but it doesnt mean it isnt a great time to be a journalist at the grave now is the best time with millions of tidbits of information then what is the value to be a journalist . It is important but the science your credibility my job is but those that migrate into your cellphone. Not like i wake up line and social media. And the washington the Washington Post but then a look to touch the paper. Been i will do that but if there is the breaking news like earthquake in china or gunfire or a candidate says of the in chicago or ohio or orlando i cannot compete with facebook or twitter or snap chat or instagram. So instead of rejecting as reporters have been doing we have to raise the new technology. That is the first revolution. The second to talks about latinas. There are now 55. That would be a good year because otherwise i would be 97. Is an 2055 i will be dead. White space hispanic will be a minority is a country of minorities. Think of what that means that when i living right now in miami or leg you go to a hospital or a school in houston that is the future. And that is specifically what we are seeing. But not everyone. Many people are not to embrace a new the change but that is so we see with donald trump and his followers. So just talk about donald trump. Team shaping the dynamics and he has a nostalgic view of the united states. Tomatoes grey he wants to send us back in to a place that many of us did not like. We dont want to go back to discrimination and for the first time we get a sense of what it is. And i said this many times. To be seen and felt everywhere. Islamic love our rhythms. And i will give you a beautiful old example. I have the privilege of interviewing judge sotomayor who is one of my heroes. And then diagnosed with diabetes. And then how oh to administer insulin shots to survive. She learned she had to live life to the fullest. Tuberculosis does not happen. It is his son david you take for granted. How about at the end of the interview . And then with the experiment so our producers that is the interview. Listed up and said he wanted dance . In the picture is here. With hamburger buns in bagels were changing everything in the united states. I dunno why i am sensing many of you. [laughter] but think of this. We have to latinos running for the right house. Even though the majority vote for the Democratic Party the reality is the normal for us is to latinos could become the next president of the united states. Think about that. Two sons of immigrants. So for the first time, now i am losing my voice. His mother is from scotland. So for the first time we have that possibility theyre 44 or 45 . It doesnt matter but the fact we have gone from bigname big numbers that is a huge change in incredibly important that we can talk about things in the past we had no chance to talk about. Therefore when we have the kid did it candidate there is a new power and we can respond to that. Where were all of candidates nine months ago . Where was the u. S. And Mexican Government nine months ago . Where were they . Know where to be found. But then we responded has but he knows when youre saying is not right. And we responded. We did now wait for the latino candidate or hispanic congressmen be responded. But good luck but almost 40 percent of immigrants, by planeso he wants a big wall a lot to be really big wall for that. [laughter] and he was to change the constitution the citizenship to the children but then he has to change the constitution for that. We have the right to start changing a uncut conversation did i think we are. Talk about latino power he says he will win the hispanic vote. I will give you some news. You will not win the hispanic vote. [applause] these are the numbers i got from the pollsters a few days ago. 81 estimate they would vote against chomp over sanders or Hillary Clinton. But that is 16 because mitt romney got 27 percent of the hispanic vote and lost the election john mccain was 31 and lost. Sewed donald trump can now win if they were our power. 27 million. But i think he is helping us because many and that honesty and jean. [laughter] ice said nobody could make it to the white house without the hispanic vote and where our power resides. So to put it into perspective only 13 of 14 million by less than 5 million votes. And that could easily change the conversation. And let me just tell you about the book and why it is connected. I think after might encounter with donald trump to put into perspective perspective, when he said mexican immigrants were rapist and criminals i sent him a hand written note through fedex i expected a response city published my letter with my cellphone number so i had to change my number. [laughter] manager response . I was looking for him i found that he would give a press conference in dubuque iowa. So i bought a ticket and went so i was not very successful. Is the first time in 30 years i was aghast interesting and was subjected by one of his bodyguards. The only other time. I asked about the lack of democracy, 1991 and in 2016 and. Bomb is going to cuba and that is another conversation but i dont know if i can call it an interview is 63 seconds before i was pushed by a bodyguard but it laughed at lasted a little longer than might encounter with donald trump. Is dangerous when a president ial candidate attacks minorities after trump told me to stay few seconds later somebody told me get out of my country. And i looked around and i said i of the u. S. Citizen. Where do you want me to go . But now that we see confrontations and violence at the trump rallies we know where that comes from. Discrimination is a hatred is contagious. If that happened to me in National Television and a when this comes to the essence of a book they thought i should have been standing up in one of the reasons why is because i bought it had i been sitting down. Few are still member of congress or the president and when do you have to stand up it is okay to say no. I thank you have to take a stand as a journalist for the activist. But in certain situations you have to take a stand. [applause] and you do that all the time. But on those situations you have to take a stand. Youre not to be neutral. Can i be neutral when someone is promoting hatred . Can i be neutral when i talk to fidel castro and treat him or shop as hugo chavez the same way as the victim as q bin dictatorship or the of their authoritarian beverage. Of course, in on certain situations with those cuban dissidents who at this point have no alternative. We dont know what will happen with cuba didnt want to admit it they cannot admit it but behind the plan of going to cuba more communication more contacts were traveling they can say that. I know i will hates that when the president will call him a president but he is a dictator. But he has more contact to lead to a change in in cuba. I hope so. I hope i can take them where their grandparents lived. But they took a stand and the dissidents that is it. They dont know what will happen in cuba. Pour what is the next up. But they learn to say the word no
