You reference. Talk about the stereotypes of the allowed black woman. But just of uh discussion is centered in a critique of the obey the black feminine identity is with scholarship and consciousness. I talked about the policies and practices that underlies how we approach girls how we enders and food day are and what they are capable of. That is profound because it begins to agitate much of the consciousness how we understand these but kennedys with stereotypes. Especially in the age of social media with our understanding of the way that the black girls and women with is consistent with hypersexual lot and sassy and the latest that we refer to as ratchet but the way that we ecolab misrepresented placed into our subconscious been so willing girls are asking questions in class it is perceived to be combative four define and with their to intention. That is problematic. How many had a similar experience . Me. And we had a great conversation punishing when then on how they dress . This is a tricky question. Been big is always interesting when how i used to dress and i think about my daughters and their presentation and i recognize much of the way adults and a debt address the dress code is through a spirit of love there are places where schools have dress codes that disallow natural hair styles but if you are of african descent become no afros zero or cornrows many people in this room could not go to school with our hair that way so i say this explicitly those policies need to be removed there is no place for individual cultural practices for hair has no idea how they learned been disproportionately affects black girls. The dress code is an interesting piece because not only is it about did they show up in short shorts or a half shirt or a spaghetti strap tank top but those girls bodies and much of what i discussed it is related to the dress code bid is how they are enforcing it to that renders black girls level policing their body is not their clothing. There are girls who tell stories about arriving in short shorts with a white or asian counterpart but they have the problem on her body vichy is sent home in when the girls protest by then they get to the additional reprimand batting is critical but those dress codes are doing vs. What theyre actually doing and how we determine who is capable of entering that space for learning to use that as a way to turn certain populations away. We are working in partnership with bed Georgetown Law Center having a discussion about girls of color and that we went to a Southern City in Many Police Officers talk how they are asked to intervene with dress Code Violations and engage with the girls if they dress appropriately some will say i will turn her away and she does not, with a tshirt that is pink and not belittle me. So we have lost the prioritization of learning ebs and come to prioritize these rules. That takes us away from that true intention
