[captioning performed by national captioning institute] [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2013] alberts uncovers Technology Issues for the New York Times, and in the science times last week, he wrote about a brand, new jersey hockey team that is using technology as a way to detect the concussions. It is done by reebok and it is called the check light by reebok. Of the New York Times, thank you for joining us. How does this Technology Work that reebok has developed . The first thing is the technology does not detect concussions. It merely detects impacts to the head. So there is a skullcap within the sensor strip, and a little bit of electronics at the back with three lights on it, and it will blink green for no impact, it will blink yellow for moderate impact, and it will blink red for severe impact to the head. The exact threshold to those pressures, ypes of reebok keeps proprietary. You estimated some 300,000 people involved in youth sports and High School Sports suffer from concussions during the year. What was this particular new jersey hockey teams experience with tech with concussions prior to this technology . Talking to the players, you hear that a lot of them are getting hits in a game, and these are 17yearold to 19yearold kids, so they hit hard, and one player in particular he had recently suffered a concussion, and coming back they had just gotten all of these check lights, so hopefully the coaches will be able to see a little bit better when they get hit while playing. You write about developing what is called a hit count for this technology. What are they trying to do you . There is a group called the Sports Legacy Institute and they are trying to advance the headcount standard where players will hit the where these sensors that keep track of the sub concussions they sustain over time. The issue with that is the science is not know how to interpret what a certain number of custom hits means yet, so there is not an easy way to save you get 1000 hits or 100 hits what you should do based on that information yet. Based on some of the hearings we have covered on the issue, have you heard about antigovernment involvement, whether that is local or federal government in terms of regulations for sports teams . That is a really good question. I have not heard anything specific about that. Only reebok the manufacturer involved in developing this type of technology . They are the most prominent one, but there are a bunch of other companies, and one of the more interesting things about what reebok has done is they can be won on the head independent of the helmet. There are many other Sensor Manufacturers that have products in development that are integrated with the helmet or worn as a mouth guard. Theres a company in connecticut that is working on one that is in a headband. Theyre talking about when h about many women sports teams. Albert sun covers reporting for the New York Times co.
