The top of the headlines on todays Washington Post, which says harvey pummeled texas on saturday, destroying buildings and causing massive Power Outages as residents evacuated towns and prepared for historic flooding that can keep them from their home for days. Host the fema administrator sent a tweet, turn around, dont drown, please avoid driving in floodwaters and stay home if you can. Thats fema administrator brock long. He will be calling in later this hour to give us an update to the situation there, but we are talking to you about your confidence in the government to respond to Natural Disasters like Tropical Storm harvey. John is calling in from philadelphia. Good morning, john. Caller good morning, and thanks for having me. I think that theyre going to be a little slow getting to it because of the hurricanes timing, strength, and all that. And then you got to look at the big state of texas, pretty much getting wiped out. Thats a lot of territory, but i would say that theres a lot of work going to be there. So if you want to work, go to texas. I think theyre going to be slow in response, really. Host why do you think it will be slow, just the nature of the storm itself or do you think its something about federal readiness in responding to storms as weve seen in recent years . Caller thats what it is. I went through sandy in philadelphia, and we were 100 and some miles from the eye of the storm. And it was ferocious. A mile away, power was out for weeks, and then right here power was on. Trees were down everywhere. Right up the block. It was incredible. And you could hear, you go upstairs, you could hear the wind like it was unbelievable that night. Ill never forget it, but it took weeks to get power on just a mile away. And we were inland 100 miles. So thats how i see it. I want to thank you for having me. I hope the people are all right down there. Im surprised that only two people are gone. Thats all. Thank you. Caller scommoip we are talking to our viewers, getting your views about federal readiness. Are you confident in the governments ability to handle a Natural Disaster . We have regional lines. If you live in the eastern or central time zones, call 2027488000. Those in the mountain and pacific regions can call 2027488001. If you are in texas, where hour very is currently raining down massive amounts of water and causing flooding, call 2027488002. A little bit more from the New York Times today about that storm. It says a fierce category four hurricane when it struck land on friday night, it eased by saturday into a Tropical Storm. Still, meteorologists warn that as much as three feet of rain could fall across the vast area from Corpus Christi to houston, the nations fourth largest city host erica is calling in from atlanta. Good morning, eric. Caller good morning. You know, i really look to scripture and things about things like this happening. You know, it tells nut bob of revelation and things that youre employing to have seven years of good and seven years of bad. We had the seven years of obama, good, after he got the crisis that bush and them had left. And now with President Trump, ships are wrecking, storms everywhere, military is out of hand, people are threatening wars and rumors of war. I actually feel like this man is the antichrist. Everyone has their opinion. Just let me voice my opinion this morning. Whether people like it or not. Also in revelation, it tell you with trumpet with sound. Its the the trumpet. Its the trump. President trumps mouth and his twrt account. And the 666 symbol was the building of jared kushner. Host let me ask you this. When it comes to Natural Disasters, this is the first Natural Disaster happening under the president s watch. What would you like him to do . How would you like to see him respond to this . Caller its no response to it. This is what im saying. He dont care. Hes admitted, he never goes to church. Put on his program what church he belongs to, whatever like yall did with president obama. Host ok, renee is calling in from baton rouge, louisiana. Renee, how confident are you in the federal government, or even local governments to respond to Natural Disasters like Tropical Storm harvey . Caller i survived r once since bets nye 1965. Adults cannot expect people to die trying to save your life because you did not prepare to save your own life. Host what did you do to prepare in the Tropical Storms and hurricanes you went true . Did you evacuate your home . What did you do . Caller never evacuated, and i cant even swim. Its a sign of life. Host so what did you do to prepare for them then . Caller i take all of the shelves out of your freezer. You fill your ice chest with water, and you stack them up, and when your power goes out, you already have blocks of ice and youre not on the road. You make sure you have gas in your car and a car that can get out up on the street and know where it floods and where it doesnt. You need to know your community. And if they tell you to evacuate and you have children, get out. Host ok, and the latest in a tweet from the city of houston, a warning to residents there, 911 services at capacity. If you can shelter in place, do so. A few inches in your home is not an imminent danger, only call if you are in imminent danger. Thats a message sent via twitter from the city of houston, which is currently being pummeled by rainfall from what was once hurricane harvey, which is now been downgraded to Tropical Storm harvey, but still posing a major risk to people in houston and other ommunities throughout texas. A little bit more from the New York Times about the impact of this storm and the response to it, since President Trump, facing the first significant Natural Disaster of his administration, issued a federal disaster declaration on friday. The order requested by Governor Abbott covers six texas counties and opens the spigot for federal aid host and we have another tweet here, this one from the airport, from hadley airport, air field is closed due to standing water on the runways. No inbound, out of bounds flights. Please check flight status before coming to the houston airport. So its having an impact not just there in texas, but in all regions at flights there in the major hub of houston are being cancelled by the storm. Again, we are talking to our viewers. Do you think the government can handle Natural Disasters like this one, the first one under the trump administration, which has already proven to be a deadly storm . You are on the eastern or central time zone, 2027488000. If you are in the pacific or Mountain Time zones, 2027488001. And we want to hear from you, definitely, if you are in texas, how did you prepare and what did you expect . What do you expect the government to do, 2027488002. Andy is calling in from new york city. Hi, andy. Caller hi. Good morning, everyone. I believe that mr. Trump has to be impeached as soon as possible. All have to impeach him as soon as possible. I think he ruin the country, he ruin everything, and his Miss Management about everything that we have to think again and vote for next president and other president. Host let me ask you this. Were dealing with the first Natural Disaster in the trump administration. How would you like him to respond to this, to the fact that we are getting these rains . Do you think he should go to texas once the rain stops . What do you think he should do in this situation . Caller he has to face this incident. George washington has a road, 71 person of the American People confirm they fear mr. Trump, we fear about mr. Trump, about our future, about our , this about this plan big country. Were learned. It is a number. Host lets look at how many more lawmakers are responding to this. Congress woman Sheila Jackson lee of texas tweeted, houstonians mayor turner is giving great advice during this time of heat, flooding and rain in houston. Please follow houstonoem for more updates as Congress WomanSheila Jackson lee warning residents there as this ongoing emergency unfolds there in texas, the first major Natural Disaster under the President Trump administration. A little bit more from the times about the impact of the storm, it says gasoline shortages are already appearing around houston, where drivers have been waiting in long lines to fill up. Dozens of gasoline stations have run out of fuel in metropolitan areas, and prices at the pump have risen about three cents a gallon around the city this week host mike is calling from georgia. Mike, how confident are you in the ability of government to handle these kinds of emergencies . Caller i went on the ground after katrina, and they had all the wire up along the river. If you wanted to get down in there, you had to have a sticker on you. Only people could get in there, even the people that lived there, couldnt get in there, but these people with omni stickers we want in there. They left out of there with truck loads of appliances and motorcycles and everything else. It was governmentsanctioned looting. They got paid 24 a yard for moving debris. They paid 4 a yard, they moved it six times. The doggone thing is pretty much where the government is concerned, just pillaging on biblical propositions, and the incompetency and overwhelminglyness of it im sure has got a lot to do with it. But the people thats down there is on their own, and the Good Samaritans around the country that can help will get a whole lot more done than the government will. Host do you think that the government has learned from past mistakes . A lot of things went wrong in responding to katrina. Do you think that the Current Administration and federal, local, state folks will have a better idea of what to do now because of what they learned there . Caller the pumps in new orleans, six fancy pumps they put in down there aint working. Their incompetence aint going nowhere. The people thats entrenched in the bureaucracies there, it dont seem to me like they take advantage of the wealth of resources of people thats got knowledge, but we dont put people thats got knowledge. We put in brownie, you know, somebody thats judging dog she is or something. Its a dog and pony show for cash money. Its disaster capitalism at its worst. Host and as we look at images from the Washington Post, we continue to talk to you, getting your thoughts about whether you are confident in the governments ability to handle Natural Disasters. Dennis is calling from buffalo, new york. What do you think . Caller i think the government s very capable of responding to natural zagsers if they are supported, if they are funded properly. But the present regime has probably cut their budget. I dont know that for a fact, but they cut everything else. And then expect them to do their job. Ey cant do it if also the people are pointing to incompetent like brownie under george bush. So the federal government will work well if its properly supported and properly funded. Republicans believe in small government. They think government is only supposed to deliver the mill nd defend the country. I dont know what they should expect, if thats the case. And people who think that everything should be returned , they are es inking this promotes the federal government doesnt promote the wellbeing of fema. Fema is a great organization. It has improved and learned from katrina. Anyway, my answer is yes, i think the federal government is very capable, and the government can do a good job. Host ok, more from the hill about the federal responses, President Trump held a camp david Cabinet Meeting to discuss the storm. It says President Trump invites president pence, met with cabinet and Senior Administration officials at camp david on saturday to discuss the federal governments response to hurricane harvey, which devastated several cities on the texas coast on friday. Trump instructed the department s and agencies present to prioritize saving lives in the aftermath of the category four storm, according to a White House Press release, as heavy rains and flooding will continue as the storm passes over the region. The president also instructed the officials to be ready to assist Texas Governor greg abbott and louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards in their states recover efforts. Both states declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, which made landfall friday night. Today President Trump is expected to hold another call to continue to address the ongoing situation there for residents affected by harvey. Louise is calling from florida. Hi, louise. Caller ive been watching the past couple of days. In florida, ive been in at least five hurricanes, one in panama city many years ago, 35, 40e years ago. Matthew recently. Charlie. I dont want to name them all. But theres a protocol. The governments handle depends on who is in government. After matthew hit, last october, trump got elected a month later. Fema after that, right after that, their people around here with still blue tarps on their roofs, but we hear one disaster after another of families not getting any help at all. Just go back to katrina. I think this weekend is the anniversary. I remember the people up to their chest in the water pushing grass and garbage buckets carrying elderly people. And judy, the head of the c. D. C. Under bush, she put out a notice saying dont go in the water, its a toxic soup, and the people are up to their necks, and dont drink the water unless you can boil it on the stove. Theres no electricity. Those people have no empathy. They just showed a picture on cnn, finally cnn showed people almost the same thing, in the floodwaters now, pushing with an elderly person, a dog, six, seven people, more coming. Host let me ask you this. Do you think that any lessons have been learned since katrina . What would you like to see local and federal officials do now . Caller i think preplan. You have those buses ready. They knew this was coming. Katrina, when it was in the gulf, it filled up the entire gulf t. Took three days before it hit louisiana, and i remember looking at the picture on tv and saying to my husband, thats a killer of a storm. And it was. Host ok, a little more from the Washington Post about the towns that were affected so far by harvey, including rockport, texas, where it made landfall, as well as in adjoining joins of fulton. There were scores of damaged or destroyed Properties Across communities of mobile homes, middleclass houses, and vacation retreats host lisa is calling in from houston. How are you doing . Caller i appreciate you asking that. Im not obviously im not doing that well. Here in houston, were having a problem that we cant handle alone. And im a democrat, so i believe in help from the government, and i dont mean like from, i mean that we all work together, we are the government, and we are going to need help. I have no idea how were going to handle everything thats happening here in houston. The flooding is catastrophic. It is also its beyond the norm of anything that anybody has ever heard of, and for right now, for this moment, i can go into my street, but i cant drive anywhere in houston because all the roadways are covered with water. So its like i cant get out any way but if theres some kind of huge truck by the military or if maybe theres some kind of air type of thing, because nobody can come in on these roads to get us. Host let me ask you this. Do you feel like you had enough warning ahead of this storm, you had enough time to prepare or what it was going to bring . Caller i really think that there was one moment in time here i had a onehour link understanding that i would have had to get everything ready and make a run for it. And thats not all thats like i think maybe you can say it is enough time if youre on point. But its like my head was like i had been adjusted to thinking about, you know, to income place, what they are saying, like zphure place. And so thats why i hadnt if i could have had more time to think about actually leaving, but i think there was a lot of things, were a population of six million, and for all of us to evacuate is a huge ordeal, and i mean, i have evacuated for a previous hurricane that didnt actually land here, thankfully. But i did evacuate at that time, and it was a very difficult thing. It took us 15 hours to do a fivehour drive, and we almost didnt have enough gas. He had two stop and get gas, and we didnt even know if we could get gas. Host what would you like what do you think you and the other folks of houston need most now from the government . What would you like to see them do next . Caller i would like to see them bringing in all kinds of vehicles, whatever type of vehicle is needed, boat, airplane, car, helicopter, big truck, go in through all the neighborhoods that are flooded and get us out to a landing. Its going to have to be, i dont know, austin. Its so much flooding. And thats what i would like. And i participate in my government. I am somebody who is dedicated to the community. Host we appreciate your call. Christine is calling in from richmond, virginia. Christine, are you confident in the governments response to Natural Disasters like Tropical Storm harvey . Caller locally, yes. The and i are and your governor seems to have
