The Democratic Party has shifted to the left. There can be little doubt. Even before she felt strong pressure from Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton, the now presumptive nominee, was running on a strongly liberal platform probably as liberal as any nominee since George Mcgovern in 1972. , paid family and medical leave, subsidized childcare, robust investment in infrastructure, and other forthrightly measures. Now the platform is reflecting the influence of mr. Sanders, and the leanings of his voters. Mrs. Dorses extending clintons original plans to extend funding for four year anniversaries and expanding Social Security, raising the minimum wage to 15 an hour, implementing Carbon Pricing and tax on transactions, a 20 First Century version of the repealed glasssteagall act, the financial sector, and aggressive action on criminal justice reform. Party platforms are never implemented in their entirety, he writes, nor are nominees obliged to stick to what is in them. They tell you a lot about where a party is coming from, and where it proposes to go. Democrats are on a leftward course. Lets begin with david in washington. What is your party stand for . Caller like i said earlier, i thought democrat stood for income equality, working people, educated people, intelligent people. Now, if you ask me that im not sure. I think what we have going on is an endorsement of theft. Would we have going right now is an endorsement of fraud. I, as a democrat, and worried about that. I supported Bernie Sanders. I always watched elections. My birthday is on november 4. Each election you thought of both parties played fair. They played by the rules. Host what you mean when you say it is an endorsement of fraud and theft . Caller if you endorse Hillary Clinton, that is what you are endorsing. I am an educated person. The first caller, when you call when do not demean your party like that. I am upset with Bernie Sanders. He came in. E was an independent i think he messed up our party. He didnt win. It is not him, really. It is the people that were voting for him. They need the following line so we can they need to fall in line so we can be donald trump. Host what is one issue you want to see addressed this week . Betty, but we have bob in minnesota. Good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. I think the Democratic Party people. Or the little probably the majority of the people. Has alwayscan party stood for lower taxes. That is usually for the wealthy people, because the middle class are taking up the tax burden where the wealthy people have gotten a break because of the bush tax cuts. Party is publican not been honest with us, either. Well, republican congressman Kevin Mccarthy publicly stated on fox news that billions of dollars spent on the benghazi investigation was for political reasons to stop hillary. They are trying to do the same thing again with the latest investigation. Host all that said, what does your party stand for . The voice of the middle class and the under class. They dont really have a voice as far as lobbying with money goes. The democrats are not quite as bought and paid for as the republicans by the wealthier class. Yesterday, in florida, Hillary Clinton announced her choice for Vice President. Here he is. [video clip] nearly 2 million men and women put their lives on the line for this country as active duty, guard members, and reservists. They deserve a commanderinchief with the experience and temperament to lead. [applause] what does donald trump say about these great americans . These 2 million . He called the American Military a disaster. Week, donald trump said as president he would consider turning americas back on our decades old commitments to our allies. All of you remember a few months ago when he said about the senate colleague, then senator clinton and mine, john mccain was not a hero because he had been captured and served as a prisoner of war in vietnam. He wants to be commanderinchief . Our Service Members are on the front line, trunk is saying that he would leave our allies at the mercy of an increasingly aggressive russia. That is an open invitation to n. Evenir putin to roll i republicans say that that is terribly dangerous. According to his body man, someone who follows the senator around during his days on capitol hill, he said he does keep the harmonica in his briefcase. He carries a few of them. He is pretty good according to this body man. He is not a virtuoso, but he can hold his own. Was instructed to snag dr peppers. He would have a 3 00 post lunch dr pepper. A little bit about tim kaine. Host prior to serving a senator, he served as governor as the commonwealth of virginia. Back to your calls on what it means to be a democrat. With the Democratic Party stands for. This is from ellicott city, maryland. Caller good morning. I am a democrat. The Democratic Party represents the common man. The Democratic Party represents the struggling man. The Democratic Party believes ust each and every one of were created equal. That we are uniquely created by god. It is unfortunate the way the republicans have carried. They say that hillary is a fraud. Lifewoman has devoted her to trying to make a difference in peoples lives. The Republican Party is scared. I dont know why. It is really unfortunate. Host this is keith calling in from chicago. You have posted many Democratic Conventions in that city. What is your party stand for benchmark caller i am very proudly democrat. Is living outfor the ideals expressed in the constitution. Which have never been realized. Ink, objectively, democrats are more critical thinkers than conservatives by nature. There is a natural curiosity. There is a willingness to accept things as they are, which are not perfect, and always endeavor to make them better which is directly at odds with the conservative idea that our best days are behind us. We realize the ideals expressed in the constitution in the past, which we never have. This america that they want to return to, you should ask conservatives what is the actual date they want to return to . They were nonconstitutional times on many Different Levels from womens rights, minorities rights, Law Enforcement, the judicial system we acknowledge the world as it is. We strive to the ideals are in philadelphia. You can see Independence Hall or the liberty bell is displayed on independents mall. Ndentce the Wells Fargo Center is now for the democrats. It kicks off tomorrow. The next call comes from frank in pittsburgh. It is wonderful that you said that. Philadelphia with the cracked liberty bell. Dont know when it actually started, but in the 1960s john f. Kennedy was a member of the Progressive Movement. To me, i would like to think both parties are progressive, but we are leading in the Progressive Movement and like to be more openminded. Host what are some of the issues . Caller well, if i got into that lets put it this way. We are more for peace through diplomacy and then peace through war. It is very tough. As you mentioned, george w. Bush i know it is tough to tolerate the united nations. 15 years, he said he had enough of diplomacy and it was time to take on saddam hussein. I think we should keep working to not only patiently indoor, but we have to establish the best diplomacy. Host are you planning to watch the convention . Caller absolutely. In a sense, and i will get off the air, you go from an imperfect union, to a more perfect union, too, if i get my way, a more perfect union. Im glad i finally got through to talk to you. You people keep doing a great job. I remember when we had our original conversation, people tod, frank, who will want watch the government at work every day . [laughter] nk you can answer that better now. It is well worth the effort. We have cspan, we have 1, 2, and 3. You for watching. In 2000, the Wells Fargo Center was the comcast center. George w. Bush was nominated there. California, why are you a democrat . Caller i have been a democrat all my life. Stood to think that it for what mr. Sanders was fighting for all year. For social justice, economic testis, criminal justice, but it doesnt seem to be fair after i heard about the wikileaks and the 20,000 emails that were left for us to read. What debbie Wasserman Schultz werether people in the dnc doing to go against senator sanders. That is not what the democrat is about. That is not who we are. I think we used to be the peoples party. We used to help the poor, fight for social justice, equal rights, now, it seems to be really corrupted. I am saddened to hear and read about these emails that went out. I think what the Democratic Party needs to do is to take ownership of this corruption and correct it so we can believe again in what the democratic ,arty used to be, and should be and improve in the future. I am grateful for cspan, because i watched the entire Republican Convention. T was hard, but i watched it im planning to watch the Democratic Convention on cspan. Thank you for not editing your comments. Ownlet us make our decisions. You dont break for commercials. You show it in its entirety. I appreciate that. Host was there anything in the Republican Convention that caught your ear that you said that sounds pretty good. Caller no. [laughter] host thank you for calling in. Lets hear from angie and jacksonville, florida. What is your party stand for . Caller hi. Hello . Host what is your party stand for . Caller my party stands for the 99 . The Republican Party stands for the 1 . Is the great difference. , bernieemocracy sanders, i stood for. I voted for him. Them there to voting for trump is something that i cant imagine. If you are a social democrat, the policies of the republican ofty are on the opposite end what social democracy stands for. I am in this country because i was running away from the and dictatorship in cameroon. I dont see how i myself can vote for anyone like donald trump. Ive seen the dictatorship of oneman firsthand. Personally, in my life, it nearly took my life. Idea people do not have an of what social democracy is. It stands for economic and social justice. It makes sure capitalism doesnt leave people behind. It makes sure that we are all in it together, that we Work Together to make a Better Society for each other. Host thank you for calling. Guest the Philadelphia Inquirer front page. Superdelegates proposal defeated. Fight is promised. For his Committee Delegates gathered in philadelphia yesterday for what was supposed ur meeting. O it went longer when an amendment was offered to ban superdelegates. The website reports on what happened. [video clip] the pesky democratic superdelegate system that progressives have been railing against is about to be a thing of the past sort of. On saturday the democratic rules theittee voted 158 to 6 for 2 3 of superdelegates. The majority would be unbound. The change will be a long time coming. Democrats will create a commission after the election and make recommendations by 2018. The changes would need to be approved by the Democratic National committee. It is a big deal. The superdelegates have never changed the outcome of the democratic primary process. Was alwaysion negative. The insurgent campaign of Bernie Sanders has been calling foul on superdelegates from the start. This is an all of branch from Hillary Clinton and the dnc not only to sanders supporters but all across the country. It includes the expansion of same day registration and reregistration. This is how utah delegates and state party chairs responded and reacted to what happened. Disappointing. We democrats should trust the voters. A delegate from georgia saying dnc in philadelphia i dobbs unity on important but evolving role on delegates and caucuses. S, described as a Bernie Sanders delegate at large, from nevada, says abolishing superdelegates failed. Legislation is being introduced. This happened yesterday. [video clip] we have 10 seconds left. If you have not voted delegates. R the time for voting has expired. On this vote, there were 58 yay. 108 nos. The amendment is defeated. Are there further amendments . Guest that was the dnc rules committee on saturday. An amendment that offer to ban superdelegates failed. You can hear reaction. Heres the final tweet from evette williams, a Bernie Sanders delegate at large well, so very disappointing. Nomination process is so broken and binds us to special interest controls. A floor fight is expected this week. Tom in a few minutes fitzgerald will be here to talk delegates with us. Lets get to michelle in los angeles. What makes you a democrat . Caller i want to give a shout out to philadelphia. I was there a month ago for 10 days. Shout out to cedar park. As a philosophy, we embrace capitalism, but not unfettered. As far as government, i think that we believe in the collective effort to a Better Society. Are a way to do things you cannot do alone. And we believe in inclusion. For example, i live in an area that has been black for 25 years. It is now being gentrified. The people that are gentrified are exclusively democrat. Hey are the young generation they believe in inclusion and diversity. They do not run from it. I think that shows in action what we believe in inclusion. Internationally, we believe in building alliances, not building walls. That is what we believe in. Host thank you for calling in. Thank you for watching. Tom fitzgerald will be out in a minute. He covers politics. We will continue this conversation. We will change of the phone numbers a little bit. We will show those to you in a second. At the International Constitution center, where we are based this week, they have an area called signers hall. We took a tour. [video clip] welcome to the National Constitution center. We are the only museum in the country dedicated to the constitution. We are located in the heart of philadelphia. We have 3 main missions. We are museum where you can come throughout the year to see our amazing interactive expeditions, but we are town hall. You can find great programming about current cost of two National Debates and discussions. We are a Civic Education center. We want our content out to teachers and students. Today, i will talk about our museum. We are in one of the signature exhibition spaces called signers hall. This is the moment the constitution was signed. There are 42 statues in the room representing those that were still present and participating in the Constitutional Convention in september after the end of a long summer that basement in philadelphia working to create this document. You can really walk amongst the signers. You can touch them. They are lifesize bronze statues. We made them to be interactive. He is by far one of the most popular and favorite here ds and well loved he has been in the 13 years we have been open. Find out that not everyone at the Constitutional Convention was happy with how things ended up. That attendedmen at different points. Some left because they had other business. Some left out of protest. These 3 are called the dissenters. Andge mason, Randolph Albert jerry. They were here on september 17, but refused to sign the document because they felt it didnt do enough to protect the interests they had for the countrys future and their personal space. We have other famous people you may recognize. We have alexander hamilton, who was the only delegate from new york after the two delegates with him left in protest earlier. He was still here at the end and helped with the final crafting and signing of the document. We have James Madison, the. Hortest delegate, only 54 they are all lifesize accurate depictions. He is the father of the constitution. He is the guy that came in with a plan. He set the agenda for the summer. He was the super influential person in shaping the final process. He took all of the notes. He left us what happened during the convention. And we have george washington. He is the father of our country. He was also elected president at the convention. He was the steady hand who was here all summer long overseeing the proceedings. And howhis gravitas much respect he had from his fellow countrymen to the proceedings. They would have to go out to the people to make their case to get them to support this new form of government. Visit you canyour be part of the story and add your name to the constitution. This is about bringing the past to life, getting it interacts with the past, and understand this period of history then you would just reading out of a textbook. Wells fargo center is where the Democratic National convention is being held. Four miles south of center city. In center city is the National Constitution center, that is where the washington journal is located this week. The liberty bell in downtown philadelphia. Tom fitzgerald of the Philadelphia Daily News of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Are you ready . Guest as ready as you can be. Some kind always be of confrontation. Cleveland got through it. Everyone went into cleveland just got back. They thought it was going to be apocalyptic on the streets. Vibed a more rockfestival then hard edged protest. Maybe all things happening with the killing of Police Officers sobered up the protesters. Everything was quite peaceful. Host when you walk around center city, you see a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters and protesters. There will be across the part, broad avenue and a the democratic committee, Convention Committee wanted to make sure that at least some of the protesters could be seen by delegates. They designed it so that at least some of them will be close enough that you get to see them. At the rnc, they were nowhere near. They were maybe a half mile from the arena. Host in your paper this morning , an article, superdelegates proposal defeated, floor fight promised. Have big of a deal is this . An interesting deal. It is an interesting deal for the establishment, for lack of a better term. The move to get rid of superdelegates entirely. It is an interesting issue. Wanternie sanders folk may to think on if you want to get rid of superdelegates. After watching what happened to the Republican Party, you have a candidate like donald trump who took off and many believe are not in the best is not in the best interest of the party. He is in the best interest of donald trump. If you had superdelegates in that party, maybe it would have channel things. On the other hand, it is not very democratic. I can see that. I think it is a big lingering issue for the left. Doing thisave been political beat for quite a while. You were in cleveland. What is the enthusiasm level . What are you feeling from the republicans and the democrats . E t republicans there wer deep division, as you could see from ted cruz going onstage stage, urging people to vote their conscience, getting jeered off. Of San Francisco and Barry Goldwater when Nelson Rockefeller was knocking the extremism, what he saw as extremism, of the goldwater forces. It was like that. They were building up their enthusiasm by really demonizing Hillary Clinton. It seemed to be working. To go were eager into battle. Folks that have been resistant to trump for finding rationalization and reasons to get on board. It seemed to be coming together underneath all of the struggle, the big moments. Trump in cruz knifed the back. Host Tom Fitzgerald of Philadelphia Inquirer is our guest. Phone numbers are up. 20 two is the area code. 7488000 for democrats. 8002 for independence. 748 8001 for republicans. And philadelphia residents, 7488003. Lets begin. That call disappeared. Sorry about that, Tom Fitzgerald. When will Hillary Clinton and tim kaine get here . Guest Hillary Clinton gets here tomorrow. I honestly dont know about tim kaine. Host secretary clinton is coming in tomorrow . Guest she is supposed to be coming in on monday. Host any events that she will be participating in . Guest before her big moment . I doubt it. Host we will talk with the former governor and former mayor later. Ell how influential was he in bringing the convention here and getting everything set up . Guest he was a big force in getting the convention here. So much talent and experience as a fundraiser. He was able to convince the party the city would kick in its share. He is an enthusiastic civic booster. The real thing that clinched it for philadelphia, as i understand it, was parking lots. The Wells Fargo Center and the other sports the have acres and acres of lots, which provides a Security Center and you can build the tent city for the media. That was the deal right there. Their eyes lit up when they were touring the various cities. Wow, parking lots. New. Host and it is convenient to have it away from center city so that it doesnt look like an armed city. Guest in tampa, it looked like kabul. En zone in i do not mean to make light of afghanistan, obviously, but owntown was all was all cut up with security. It is isolated, but not so far here. Host you are on the air. Caller thank you for taking my call. Can you hear me . Ahead. Obby, please go we are listening. Caller i want to say to the guy that you have on, from the Philadelphia Inquirer he says that maybe the republicans wish they had superdelegates i am peoplependent, but the on the republican side spoke. I think the people that supported Bernie Sanders have a right to be upset. The medias the biggest problem we have in america today. I want to say on the email scandal and how the new cycle moved on the could didnt matter. It matters. What is going on today show she what the Democratic Party is about. Been the democrats they would not have had to resign, they wouldve let it go. I am an independent. I know who im going to vote for. I dont want to say right now because i like to stay open to what is going on. Now we have people like this guy in the media going into this convention, they will go ahead and make here all this because she is a woman. Foot she did on National Security and secretary of state we have known about her since 1992 they will glorify her because that is what democrats do. Host that is bobby in georgia. Tom fitzgerald, any reaction . Guest i think Hillary Linton would disagree that the media has been covering up the email. Candal itself it came to light because the media wanted access to the emails. It kicked off the whole investigation. I think that she has paid a terrible price for this problem. It is very much on the minds of voters. And is a reason for as many as 6 in 10 do not trust the former secretary. Where bobby from georgia is coming from, but i believe she has not skated away from that. From pittsburgh, pennsylvania. We are listening. Caller thank you for taking my call. I agree with your guest, Tom Fitzgerald, in that we should keep the superdelegates. Simply because of what happened with the republicans. I know nobody is happy with their choice. People vote with emotion. They do not vote with their heads a lot of the times. I think they do get the wrong nominee. I think we should keep superdelegates. I think we should get rid of carcasses. That is my comment we should get rid of caucuses. That is my comment. Hillary clinton was treated unfairly. I think that if this were a republican, with their emails, it would have been flown over a long time ago. I think that there is a double standard in how the media and people treat democrats versus republicans. Well, teresa, first off you make a good point about superdelegates. The superdelegate system is almost like the system drawn up here by the founders where you to be the saucer ls the houses actions. System is interesting. There are people that wish to have open primaries and get rid of caucuses so that it is more voterstic with more participating in choosing the nominee. It is not on the agenda of the powers that be. A lot of people agree that the caucuses should go and the voting process be opened up more. Hear from conrad in philadelphia on the republican line. Go ahead. Caller how are you doing . I want to ask the Philadelphia Inquirer questions. How long has he been with the history . Does he have a of both parties, democrats and republicans . Way talks about superdelegates, we talk about this and that. You can have all the american. Oters votes if you do not have electoral votes, you will not be president. You are voting for nothing. You could have 100 votes for you. If you do not have the electoral votes, you will not be the president. Philadelphia, in all the corruption in philadelphia, is he aware of it . When you call the inquirer and daily news about democrats and republicans come you dont hear anything. Are the democrats donating to the inquirer . Is that why they dont talk about hillary . Villa delphia has a lot of problems. It is bigger then talking about hillary and donald trump. You had previous elections were elected officials, they had fraud on petitions. They can turn around and come back in and do a write in. You can get a rubberstamp. Illegal petitions, get someone on the petition, and the democrats can come back in the door with a write in. On the not have any laws book saying it is illegal. The democrats do what they wanted to hear it republicans cant do nothing unless they go through the democrats. Host are you going to be coming to the best entities . Caller i have been to them. They all say democrats and republicans. At the end of the day, if you do not have a lobbyist working for you, you will not get anything. Host lets hear from Tom Fitzgerald. ,uest i think, without a doubt philadelphia has suffered from being a oneparty town. The Republican Party is very weak here. It hasy reason representation on the city council is because the charter minoritys the party a certain amount of representatives. That has allowed bad people within the power structure to do bad things. That is true. There have been a lot of scandals. Our pages have been filled with them. I dont understand the point of view that we do not notice or cover this. Ask attorney general kathleen kaine, or the state representatives convicted on bribery after he reported about it. City couldthat the use some competition. I think everybody, most civic leaders, realize that we need more political electoral competition to make the city better. Host how long have you been with the inquirer . Guest 16 years. Host heres the lead editorial in the inquirer. Y is a great place for a party, but there democrats are a disgrace. You have rob mccord and kathleen kaine. Is the statecord treasurer, as you may remember, who was basically strongarming contributions for his given Editorial Campaign with his Gubernatorial Campaign with Money Managers from the state, seeking work with the state. That is what he is charged with. Host philadelphia is the fifthlargest city in america. 26 poverty rate. Baltimore, independent. Caller good morning. My question is, why do you believe the republicans are so angry . The reason i ask this question employees who 2 are going to probably support donald trump. Im not sure if they are familiar with the political aspect. Donow for a fact that they not have a higher education. A high schools education. The highest level. A lot of people on the team are going to support republicans, but they say they will not support donald trump. I heard in the past of the magic number is 65 million votes. I say if donald trump get 65 million votes, you have no worries. You do not have to persuade me to vote for donald trump. You do not have to reiterate some of the intelligence that you get on Hillary Clinton. Host lets take your opening comment and see if Tom Fitzgerald whats to comment wants to comment. Guest the republicans are so angry because the base of the Republican Party is angry because republicans promised to do a lot of things, like get rid of obamacare. They have failed to do it. Who are conservative feel they have been supporting this party for election after election and not getting results. Frustrated, really, as much as angry. Theres a great frustration among republicans because they watched for eight years being out of power, basically. Some of theting things the administration has done. Amount of worry about the future of the economy and terrorism. Violence on the streets. Of innocent the Police Shootings of africanamerican men and the shootings of police. Together, up disappointment, frustration, and worry. Host this is frank on our independent line. Caller good morning. I am going to be at the rally ch today. The way that i look at it is that we americans should be looking for the best person that will help move our country forward. Feel Hillary Clinton is that person. We never had opened debate where every american would be able to for. Who we would be voting a lot of people i have been talking to are just finding out hillary, what she is advertising she has done. Thepeople, the ceo of company and the founder, do not support her. Host we will ask about that. What rally will you be at this afternoon . Caller it will start up town and go down broad street. I think it starts at 1 30. Host what is the protest about . Caller i am protesting hillary. I am protesting hillary and the way the election process is. Endents doat us indep not have a voice. We have to vote for either person. The republican or the democrat, we may not support them like in the situation. Host what do you do in philadelphia . Caller what do i do here . I work on boats. I travel around the United States and work on 12 meter acc boats. Boats. Dollar that is what ive done most of my life. Host thank you. Tom fitzgerald . Guest that is a really good point, frank. Ents in many states, most of the contests for both parties cannot get a voice and who will be the nominee. There is a movement of reformers who want more open primary so that independents like you can get in there, too. The Party Leadership has an interest in limiting that so that they do not get swept, they do not get swept and have someone forced on them that they do not want. There is a tension there and it would probably be a lot a much more open system with independents, because in some states, particularly in the midwest, if independents could participate. Host independent line, michael, go ahead. Republicana former and now registered nonpartisan, i will have to support hillary thesen because neither of corporate policies are focusing on domestic policy. If i were to support her with my vote, i feel i would actually be supporting donald trump who scares me, frankly. Hearing a lot from our viewers today about corporate parties. Money. Guest money. It is true, that is a great underlying frustration and it unites voters who lean more to the right and those who lean more to the left. Donald trump even condemns money in politics, which is ironic in some respects. There is a feeling that the the in are just part of Group Running the country and there are no positive changes for working people. That is a big problem and the political system is going to have to address it or they are andg to keep having more more of these populist uprisings like we have seen this year with the Sanders Campaign and the Trump Campaign. I think it is a problem. Tom fitzgerald with the Philadelphia Inquirer, what would you be covering today . Guest today i will be talking to Hillary Clintons campaign up withand catching Senior Adviser for donald trump, paul manna furred Paul Maniford is having an event here in town. Host thank you for being with us, we appreciate it. Coming up next, another half hour of your phone calls and philadelphia, 202 is the area code and we are asking what your party stands for. Why you are a democrat or republican or why you are neither . For democrats, 2027488001 four republicans, can dial in ats 2027488002. Tom fitzgerald mentioned that he will be talking with hillary manager andmpaign he met with delegates who have already come to philadelphia, here is lynette hall who tweeted, first night in philadelphia, Kickoff Party as well as exploring. Here is another tweet ready for democrats in philadelphia, arizona and Arizona Democrats i am with her and him. Also, protesters are on their way to philadelphia, here is the first one at fdr park donning bernie or bust on the back of her car. For protesters that are planning to make chaos in philadelphia this week, usa today says the forecast is excessive heat and expect thathey can to be taking place throughout the week come up to learn more go to usa today website. Earlier about who will speak at the convention, monday night it will be mothers of the black lives movement whose sons or daughters have. Een killed in Police Shootings the Philadelphia Police are not too happy about that, in a letter to Hillary Clinton, john the head of the fraternal order of police said they are insulted and will not soon forget that the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton are excluding the widows and other family members of Police Officers killed in the line of duty who were victims of explicit and not implied racism. Heeing on duty in blue goes on to write it is interesting that Hillary Clinton must pander to all of the people who do not know the facts bother meant all the men and women are out protecting the political of this country. You should be ashamed of yourself, if that is possible. That j did delight 20th that letter dated july 20. Independence hall in downtown city center, philadelphia. Philadelphia has been home to many conventions, george w. Bush 2000,minated here in harry truman was also nominated some of the people nominated at the conventions in philadelphia, marcia in green bay, wisconsin. Why are you a democrat . Caller i am a democrat because of a speech that Hubert Humphrey gave. I am not quite old enough to have heard it in person, but i read it when i was in high school and that is when i became a democrat. Hubert humphrey was mayor of minneapolis at the time and it was a short speech, but the speech stressed that the Democratic Party was the party that did not look at race, creed, any of those things. It just ever since i have been a democrat. Actually, i was calling this morning not so much for that question, but because of something you played on the air about half an hour ago, you had a clip from the signers hall of because the touche and center and that jogged my memory. Theigners hall of Constitution Center. Touring around the constitution hours andit was three two minutes and 14 seconds, if people will watch that program. [laughter] was, march 4, 2005. If people will watch that program, they will learn more about the formation of the constitution, the people who created it, the factions of people who signed, the people smock isot sign, ray the model for benjamin franklin, that the best three hours anyone would find in the cspan archives and i wish you would write down the date and give the program a plug because, it is worth it. That is the reason i called. Host that is funny because i talked about that all we got. I was the executive producer of the washington journal at the time and brian came up with ray smock and there was a picture in the Philadelphia Inquirer of ryan lamb sitting right next to James Madison as he was taking notes in signers hall. March 4 2005, a threehour program from the Constitution Center. The Constitution Center is. Ormed by an act of congress in the ground for the establishment it was broken on september 17 2000, which was the anniversary of the signing of the constitution. Pennsylvania. Per, what does your party stand for . Caller because i live in. Ennsylvania because i live in pennsylvania. Hello . Host we are quite we are going to put you on hold, a reminder to all viewers, put your turned down the volume on your tv. Lets try lidia. Caller i am calling on the independent line and independents are not just conservatives that are there are many that are progressives. My vote for the last 25 years, sometimes voting democrat, sometimes green party, and frankly, i am increasingly disillusioned and alienated by the Democratic Party because, essentially, it is it still talks liberal, but increasingly acts corporate. I was a Bernie Sanders supporter, but also a supporter of the green party because i was not sure if Bernie Sanders would be able to get past the machine of corporate politics that has invaded the Democratic Party and i feel like our democracy is at this turning point and, which way will it go . Will continue to expand as we have tried to do since the new deal or will it clamp up further . I think we have to look at the structures of money, primaries, debates, we used to have the legal women voters sponsor the president ial debate and now it is a private bipartisan republican and democrat endeavor, it closed up. Bouncing off the lady that called about the Constitution Hall threehour special, i will look for that. Realis that cspan is democracy in action, i appreciate what you all do. I spent the first 30 years of my life in texas and i have been in minneapolis for the last 28 years. I have a very strange perspective of red and blue. I just feel like we are at a turning point. Host all right, we will leave it there in minneapolis. What you see on your screen are live pictures from inside the Wells Fargo Center as they get ready for the convention to open tomorrow. Lets go back to jean in pennsylvania on the republican line. Just talked to the telephone, we are all listening, why are you republican of what does your party stand for . Caller i am a registered republican because i cannot register independent in pennsylvania and vote in the primaries. I am a child of god and god tells me i can have no dealings myh nihilism and that greatest honor in him is to take care of the less fortunate. I have watched people suffer under nihilism and it is like groundhog day. We are entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts. I am tired of hearing people saying that republicans are in charge, they are not. Watching cspan and going back to basic civics, when i walk out and talk to people, i do not approach them as a party, i approach them as a child of god. Republicans are not in charge, we have had seven and a half s. Ars of senate domain veto two and a half years they had control of the house and senate and did not do anything they promised, the least among us, no gun laws. Host we will get more voices and listen to roy in sun city, california on the democrat line. Caller good morning. I am a democrat and i think my party stands for fairness to all people. The difference that i see with the republicans is that they are glo party. Caucasian an they say they want to reach out and do outreaches they are not really. After the Civil Rights Movement lyndon johnson, they were taken over by the dixiecrat and it is evident now that you see the images of the Republican Party at their convention, very few blacks. They make sure they put all of the races on the stage. As you look at the audience, there is no diversity. Frankly, i feel taking the country back is Donald Trumps race. They want to progress to the 60 to the 1960s and that was not good for minorities. That is why i am a democrat. Point, 2200 72 delegates of the Republican Convention, 18 of the delegates were africanamerican. The democrats have 4763 total that does not include the alternates. Donnie inall is oklahoma, republican line. Why are you a republican . Caller good morning. The reason i am republican is i used to be a democrat and in farm and grew up on a was taught to treat everyone the same, no matter the color of their skin. And help people whenever i could. Growing up on a farm, you are a hunter. Always safei was in 1980, the democrats wanted to take away the gun just because i guess in their party, they wanted to. It did not make sense. Whenever i hear about the gun grabbers, mostly democrats, that it just frustrates me. I just believe that the republicans stand for common sense. I do not necessarily like trump, but i will vote for him because i sure do not like hillary. I am ex military and x Law Enforcement and everything she does seems criminal to me and that is much all i have to say and i thank you for your time. Host scarlet in arizona on our democrat line. What does your party stand for . American am a native out of northern arizona, good morning, iwatch cspan every morning. I do look at both sides of the information given. The most, we are people here and we do listen and evaluate and test both attest both parties. I believe with all my years as a democrat i feel comfortable and safe and secure. Democrats stand for equality. That means you are recognized as this comingcan in election, we know that bill clinton was here and we have not seen a republican yet. It will be a very conflicting situation. Navajo, our land is here. Host we will leave it there, thank you scarlet. Caller cnet is reporting on how some of the convention goers are making their way to philadelphia this week and feature dallas roberts, they know its 32 years old and could not afford the 3000 he estimated the trip what cost, so he did what many people of his generation would do, he turned to gofundme. And just a month he raised 1500, enough to cover his 545 flight and 380 per night hotel room, which he is sharing with two other delegates. Delegates are expected to put the bill themselves in attending the dnc and it is expensive. Organizers require them to stay at specific hotels that range from 300 test 600 a night depending on how close they are to the Convention Center and then there are flights, meals, and the occasional tip. At it all up and being paid on hand for Hillary Clintons crowning will likely cost many delegates more than 4000. Many of them turning to the gofundme website. There is also this from the arkansas news website, a piece about one of the speakers at the dnc convention. Speakers from arkansas who will be talking up Presumptive Democratic nominee include bill , andon, Chelsea Clinton one not so wellknown name, dustin carson, 30 years old of benton says he finds it a little nerveracking to be writing a speech to get on stage at the convention. He will speak in support of Hillary Clinton, who was first lady of arkansas when persons was a schoolboy. Now a fifthgrade teacher at pine haven elementary school, he said clintons advocacy of education has been an inspiration to him. Is also a delegate and said the Clinton Campaign reach out to him a few weeks ago after learning of his background. Clinton chaired the Arkansas Education standards committee. Just a little bit about who will be attending the convention in philly, including some of the speakers. Demconvention. Com to get the times and list of speakers. Host on the upstairs interior of the wells fargo Convention Center you can see the balloons are being loaded up to drop on thursday night after Hillary Clinton except the nomination. Next call as to why you are a democrat or why you are a republican or why you are neither is fred from huntsville, alabama on the independent line. Caller good morning cspan washington journal. I am a true independent, that means i agree with democrats on some things and republicans on some things. Isthe last category immigration. You are either here illegally or not legally or not. Inn i walk into the booth november, i am not being facetious, i will flip a coin for Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton because it will be the same result. These are the two worst candidates we have had probably ever in the history of this nation. Thank you, have a nice day. Host leslie is here in philadelphia on our independent line. Caller i want to agree from the guy from huntsville, the candidates are terrible, but people chose them. I have quick point about the city of philadelphia, the government has been run i democrats for at least four years and city is controlled in every single aspect by them. The city council is corrupt and there are people being paid off and nothing is being done. City ho live in the will come to the city and visit all the nice areas, but there are other parts as well which show how the city really is. Talking about north philadelphia and kensington, basically north of downtown and those are the places where the people actually live and some of those areas are not as nice and people will not talk about them and i think that is a shame. As a philadelphia resident, i guess i have mixed feelings about this convention. I do not live anywhere near it so it will not affect me, i guess it is ok. It will happen either way. Those were the point i had. Thank you for cspan. Host what do you do in philadelphia . Caller i do paralegal work. Host you say you are not near the convention or the sites, will you attend politicized politifest or come downtown to watch . Caller probably not. There will be a lot of security and a lot of people and i would rather stay up where i live and watch on tv. Host what you think about the cost to the city or perhaps the benefit to the city for hosting . Caller that is an interesting question. Last year we had the pope in town and the City Government tried to bill it as an income boost for the city businesses and it turned out not to be the case. I think it turned out to be revenue neutral or revenue negative and this time they are trying to do the same thing and i am not convinced one way or the other on that. I think it will turn out the same way as the pope, if anything i think we will lose money because there will be less people here. Host tom is calling from wisconsin. Why are you a democrat . Caller i am proud to be a democrat, i started voting when obama came to rise as a classate for the working and they are for all minorities and i am proud of Hillary Clinton and all that she has accomplished. One thing they need to Start Talking directly to gay people are it obama did, but hillary and them are not and i am proud to be a democrat and i would be embarrassed for republicans republicans are embarrassing just talking about them. Thank you for having me on and i am proud to be a democrat. Bruce int call is mississippi on our republican line. In your view what does your party stand for . Caller i cannot tell you what it stands for now, i can only tell you what it stood for in 1978 when i became a republican. When i became a republican i researched i was getting out of high school and i researched it was the party of lincoln and i knew that as long as someone would give me a sand room i could probably accomplish the things in my life i would want and the Republican Party seemed to be the mechanism and the road and the way to get that done. With all the things that have been going on here lately, my being africanamerican, i am a true republicans. The thing is, i cant, i cannot go along with what i have been seeing and there are things that have happened even during the convention that the media did not even pick up on. In the first 100 days, donald trump was going to take the tax exempt status and give it to people who talk about politics in churches through that is the underpinning of our country, i cannot go along with that. What i decided, is that there needs there is time for a change, but not the way barack obama is thinking and of the way the independents are thinking. Decided we need another party i am africanamerican and i know it sounds ridiculous, i decided maybe i should start my own party. Ewarparty. Com. I am trying to find people to help get it started, i do not care what party you are in, but maybe we can make a difference if the people were feeling disenfranchised by all the parties to start another party with people that are still in the game you and i think veterans should have their own centrist a b more they should be more centrist. We are a part of everything, we put skin in the game, our voices need to be heard. Donald trump, i do not even think he is trying to be elected to my think everything he has done has been toward not getting elected because we stop following the money. I think the man has found a way to make money off of this by not getting elected, where is his money . Host bruce in mississippi come republican line and up next is brian in wilmington, delaware, a democrat. Caller thank you for taking my call. Barack obama, he has this word when he spoke at the first city and he hired a female of the secretary as secretary of state and i am upset that part of hillarys message is diversity and fairness for everybody and sticking up for women. Wasnt there a person of color sheet could have chosen for Vice President a person of color she could have chosen for Vice President or a woman . Host tony is in capital heights, maryland. He is and appended. He is independent. My reality is different than the average person because i look at things only in a rational context. Theypeople were right when said they were corporate parties because i do not see any difference in the republican and democratic parties, they are playing good cop and bad cop. Politicians are guilty of violating the lawyer act. That is the reason i could never be a democrat or republican, i do not think it is progressive to be absolutely anything. Conservativeely a or liberal leaves room for you to be irrational at times. I do not think it is progressive to voluntarily put yourself where you have to be absolutely conservative or absolutely liberal. I have views that are actually conservative views and i have views that are liberal views, but i am i reserve the right to choose instead of putting myself in a box and the absolutely conservative or absolutely liberal. Electioning up in this , tony, which way are you leaning right now . Caller i am watching this election. My reality is, right now i ifally feel that donald trump gets elected, i feel that donald trump would step aside and allow paul ryan to be president and this is how i look at it. The speaker of the house position was changed for a reason. The guy did not just stand down as speaker of the house and let paul ryan get there. I feel that even if donald trump gets elected, i feel he will step aside and allow paul ryan to be, because paul ryan is the third person in place to be president in case something happens anyway. Host we will have to leave it there and hear from christopher in englewood. Caller i want to thank cspan for their services to promoting the Public Awareness of the political system and i wish all of you well. I was in philadelphia years ago as a young man and i always embraced this dutiful city beautiful city. Being a democrat is a party of inclusion. Important that it is for us as human beings in the party to stand up for those who cannot have a say. I have been a worker at a coffee shop for 14 years and i have been an important asset to the community as a young man and always on the front lines fighting for those whom do not have a say. It has been hard for people to have a say with this election. I am more convinced than ever that we need to come together as anyoned front and get that is an independent as well, i encourage them and welcome than them into our party and say, we need you on our team, we welcome you and love you and we want you to stand with us in this hour of need because we want to go forward and we want to fight for those who do not have a say. You are a part of this community and a part of our country and we are really speaking up on the issues that affect you and it is so important today that we need to come together to have open dialogue and to vote on the issues. Host christopher in englewood, new jersey. Coming up next is the chairman of the post committee, former governor and former mayor, ed rendell. Washington times is reporting that twitter users conservative twitter users are eaksh because the dncl disappears from trending news in the wikileaks in the website. Emails propelled the story to top trending, the dncleaks disappeared and then reappeared after users cried foul. There is this from the liberal magazine the nation, about the choice of senator tim kaine to be Hillary Clintons running mate, so, it is tim kaine, like mario cuomo, he is one of those politicians who says he is opposed to abortion but supports the womens right to choose. It is out of step with the more assertive tenor of the prochoice movement in recent years. Y write that rewriter. Ewire had harsh words click to herself seems chronically unable to speak about abortion without euphemism. That seems severe, says the magazine. That tim kaineay is not our friend when it comes to abortion issues, he supported parental notification and consent and favored a partial birth abortion ban. It makes the abortion process more cumbersome. The liberal magazine the nation online come you can find it there. Put this together, a video taking a look at the latest nickname put out there by donald trump, this time for senator tim kaine. [video clip] ted, crookedlying hillary, corrupt kaine. The gop nominee has been bashing. He virginia senator to hide thetried gifts, they have been disclosed for years and most of it was travel or some sort of campaign event, there are other gifts like 5,500 in clothing and free lodging in the caribbean from another friend, all of this was completely legal because of virginia has lax gift laws and there was no exchange of favors. They are trying to distance successor, but the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of his predecessor in june. Ofre were real accusations quid pro quo in this case. Really have a national profile, so defining him early is the best way to go fits nicely inne the narrative push, they are convinced that clinton is a crooked criminal that should be in jail. The new nickname is not based in fact, but that is definitely not going to stop the Truck Campaign from using it for the next three months. From newsy, i am eugene daniels. Host back at the National Constitution center near Independence Hall. Former governor ed rendell, is that a fair video youd listened to . Tim kaine gets the issue. He has disclosed, voluntarily, it was not illegal in pennsylvania. Oneisclosed there never was talk that any gift was connected to any official action. I think it is the usual effort by the Trump Campaign to distort acts and to cast people in negative light. What i did not like about donald than it wasch other angry and dark and painted a horrible picture of the country, what i do not like about it is that he consistently did not tell the truth. He said he was going to take care of Violent Crime in america, i am a former District Attorney and former mayor and federal government has very little to do with Violent Crime. It is the mayors that control the police forces. If you are going to do something , tell us that,on but do not say, i am going to take care of crime on my first day. He said on the first day, it ends, it does not end and you have not told us one idea how you will do it. He lied about Hillary Clinton being against the second amendment. He did not tell the truth and he did not substantiate anything he said with fact that he is lying about tim kaine, and is a prize. Host before we get too far into politics on that degree, what did you think of the Supreme Court decision regarding former governor bob mcdonald . Think it does have to be a clear quid pro quo before you can take a public official and charge them with a crime. If a public official does things that are inappropriate and almost everything that governor mcdonnell was charged with, i would say and you would probably say it was inappropriate. The remedy for that is disclosure and the voters are the ultimate remedy, they vote him out of office as a have done with other officials that have been accused of like things. To convict someone of a crime and there was no quid pro quo wrong. I think is i think the Supreme Court may have gone a little too far and i think they basically got it right. Host last time there was a Political Convention in philadelphia, you were the mayor. Guest i was the mayor and we had more republicans and we put on a great show. Republicans used the Historic Sites to create a feeling of background and patriotism and an upbeat convention. The George W Bush convention was upbeat, he was a passionate conservative. WasRepublican Convention dark and angry and ben carson said that Hillary Clinton talks to lucifer. Paul manna for attacked the republican governor of ohio. It was strange, ted cruz delivered a major speech and essentially said, vote your conscience, which is a way of saying, i am not voting for this guy, our nominee or it it was the most is our thing i have seen a donald trump shouts his speech for 74 minutes. I thought it was stunning. I preface that by saying, every time i made a prediction over the last two years, i have been wrong. In 2000at was your role as the mayor of philadelphia . I was responsible for winning the bid of the organization i put together. Then i was involved in the planning of all of the logistics, transportation, hotels, delegate entertainment, a unique thing here in philadelphia. In 1990 nine, president clinton asked me in november to be chair of the Democratic Party and i accepted. From that moment on, i was recused from doing anything for the Republican Convention. Guest what is your host what is your role in this convention . Guest i am chairman of the Host Committee which has given me the task of raising 64 million. We have only 14 paid employees with us from the beginning and about a third of them were in charlotte and denver. We put together, i think, a great plan and we have every agency accounted for. Having said that, i guarantee there will not be some problems, especially with security because of demonstrators. I think we are ready for every contingency. Host have the donors been disclosed . Donorsthe law says the are disclosed 60 days after the convention. People say, you have to be more transparent. Why do we have transparency about who gives, so voters can make up their mind of that influences their vote. 60 days after the convention leaves at least five weeks before the president ial election, so any voter interested in Reading Press accounts can go on the website and see who donated to our convention and they can assess whether any of those donors were such that they might not want to vote for the party in question, either us or republicans. That is why transparency exists, so voters can make a judgment about who we are raising money from. Host did you ever consider running for president . Guest the timing was not good for me, if hillary a clinton Hillary Clinton announced for a five user that she was not going to run, i may have considered loveg it a shot, but i hillary and i headed up her campaign in pennsylvania in 2008. It was a great moment for me and she goes over the top tuesday night. All we want can say negatively about donald trump, but we would be fools not to realize that some of the message is right. He is right about china, but hillary has said she wants to crack down on some of chinas abuses as well. Donald said in a way that resonates with people who are out of work or people working in jobs that are paying them half of what they used to make and it resonates. It is an easy answer, not the right answer, trade is not what destroyed american manufacturing. The bigger factor was technology. Ira member going down to the Naval Shipyard as a kid and there mustve been about 100 welders with blowtorches and mallets, today you still have a very good functioning shipyard and you see four welders at a computer operating robotic arms and it has nothing to do with trade. A simple andrs direct message which is easy to understand and which sets off a button of frustration and anger and it is very effective and we would be mistaken if we think that is not a message that resonates with some workingclass democrats. Host is he someone you know . Guest i know donald very well and he probably does not believe me when i say i like him as a person. He is charming and he has come at times, a very good heart and i have seen him do nice things for people. A conservative, by the way, donald trump is almost as progressive as i am, truth be told. I just do not like the way he has campaigned and i do not like the namecalling. Iran for office 17 elections and i never called my opponent a name. When i ran for governor, every candidate iran against i ran against, either work for me or endorsed me. Running for office is hard, Holding Office is hard, you should not demean people. Terrific, he is a public server, Hillary Clinton has given her life. Hillary clinton graduated from be a law school, she could made unlimited amount of money by going to one of the big wall street law firms, what did she choose to do . She spent several years of her life working for the childrens defense fund. She is a terrific person and she is not cricket. Crooked. She probably made a mistake, but she is not crooked. Put out a tweet that Hillary Clinton chose a good man that has good instincts and is a fine United States senator. I assume tim kaine will work hard for the republican for the ticket in arizona. Is a decent guy, i like cam and i think he wants to do the right thing. I think his views are screwed up, but i will not say he is a bad guy. And on theing this inside of this convention, i have said publicly on the airwaves, lets spend no more than 25 of our time telling people what is wrong with donald trump. Lets spend 75 of our time telling people what is right with Hillary Clinton and tim kaine and be specific about answers to problems, specific details so the public can say, you know, that is right. , itce Community Relations is a question of training. Task forcebamas says the main thing we need to do is train our police better on how to interact with the public and Hillary Clinton said she would put 1 billion in federal money for a fund that police the access that money for training. To train about Community Relations and timidity policing and how to interact in difficult situations. That is a concrete proposal that means something. Host lets take some calls, richard in oakland on a democrat line. I am awould like longtime democrat all my life. I think Hillary Clinton handsdown is the most qualified one of the most qualified nominees to be president we have ever had. There has been a right wing targeting of her ever since she was in the white house with bill because basically, they are afraid of hillary. She knows how to get things done and she is proactive and stands up for her values. She does not take groep from anybody. As far as the she does not take crap from anybody. The Democratic Party is the party of the people. People who are disadvantaged, republicans are actually antiall of those things. The Republican Convention was an absolute disgrace. I have never seen such angry hatred fear mongering speeches. It reminded me of a lynch mob. Host you got a lot on the table. Ed rendell. I agreeonly thing with everything richard said. When Hillary Clinton was in the senate, she a lot got along terrifically. Republicans,th Mitch Mcconnell said, i have no problem working with hillary. Linton as president Lindsey Graham said he would have no problem working with. Illary clinton as president hillary reaches out and listens and tries to find common ground, it is not her way or the highway. You do not have to take her word that, she had six years eight years as a senator to prove that. Host diane is going from reston, virginia. On the independent line. Caller i just wanted to ask the former governor about, how does he think that hillary is going to overcome this aura of distressed around her . I think that when i ask people, what did she do . There is benghazi, the emails, what happened there . They cannot really answer those questions. I was curious to know what you think is going to happen at the convention to help that and one more thing. Guest go ahead. Host she is gone. Guest diane asked a good question, i think we have to reintroduce Hillary Clinton to the American People. How do you do that with someone that is wellknown . There if you very few people know that she turned down wall street law offices to work with the childrens fund. I think we have to reintroduce her and point out that benghazi, there were six congressional committees all controlled by republicans and one independent committee, all of which found nothinglary clinton did wrong, including the last committee that had her on the witness stand for 13 hours. They issued a report in the dark of night about a week ago which said she did nothing wrong. Republicans said she did nothing wrong after investigation after investigation. Directormails, the fbi cleared it up the second day and ironically went before the republican committee. None of the emails that were sent out or received was classified at the time. Ones that the director said were classified, he corrected the next day and said, they were classified, but after the fact. The same thing happened to powell and condoleezza rice. They sent out emails from private accounts that were later found to be classified, but were not classified at the time. Reintroduceave to her and tell people all of the great things she has done in her career and all the right choices she made. And at the same time, explains the things that have been most damning. Will that take away years of negative commercials . Not entirely, but it is hard. Debuted at the 2000 Republican Convention, it is in the Convention Center and 6 different museums and it is for people who love politics and government, to them, it is like fanfest at the baseball allstar game. You can comment here great speeches, it is amazing. Host mark, go ahead with your question or comment. Caller what is Hillary Clinton going to do for the veterans at of this country . Guest one thing she is going to do is not cut the veterans budget. It was cut significantly and guess who cut it . He Republican Party Hillary Clinton will put resources into improving the va, medical system is a disaster and that we should privatize it. 85 of veterans say they do not. Ant the va privatized hillary will improve it and put more resources and it and we will certainly not cut the budget. Paul on the independent line, you are on with former governor, former chair, ed rendell. Caller it seems that you are both republicans and democrats are out of touch. When people are getting gifts, like a 14,000 trip to the caribbean, that does not sound like nobody that i know or anybody watching this right now is familiar with people getting lavish gifts, simply because they are nice people. Usually people expect something for them. The fact is, you can talk about messaging and historical sense of philadelphia and what have you, but the average person really has not been served that well by either party and when people are getting gifts and sweetheart business deals, it reeks of finality. The idea that, there is no specific quid pro quo and therefore, it is ok, i do not think the majority of americans are buying that anymore at all. Host all right, i think we got the point. Guest i think paul raises a good question and that is the reason we should not take gifts. The trip to the caribbean was a personal friend who paid for it because tim kaine on a government salary could not afford it. And pennsylvania, that would not is. Egal, in virginia, it voters and citizens make the mistake thinking that politicians necessarily react to. Ifts or Campaign Contributions the largest contract i gave out as mayor of philadelphia was to redo the terminals at the airport. It was hundreds of millions of dollars and there were three bidders. Two were philadelphia groups that were headed by people that had given me and raised over 100,000 and the third was the boston group teaming up with a local aftercare africanamerican business that would have given me 1000. Boston people i had never met never gave me a dime, i picked them because they had the best. Did i regret i cannot help my guys, yourtold them, bid is not competitive financially and the boston group has done some airport around the country and it had gotten rave reviews, so we picked them because they were the best. We have to take money the way the system is, we have to raise money and you like to help your contributors, but if you are decent,nd honest and i think most politicians all,c officials are, not you do what is right in the end for the people you serve. Number two, the government did not do anything for people. What was the cause caller saying . Do you get Social Security . Medicare . D that basically gives you almost free prescription drugs . Do you get va benefits if you served in the army . The government doesnt do anything for you . Not even close. You record was 17 elections, are you 170 . 152. No, that was the baseball player, id be worth 18 million a year. Host how do you survive the politics . Guest my wife says the greatest tribute to me is that on the town that turns on everybody eventually, i have been a public official for 35 years and still wellliked. I think the reason is because i say what i think and i do not hold back. It gets me in trouble at times, think peoplebut i respect that. Even people who do not agree with me say, i like you because you tell the truth as you see it ing us. Re not b. S. If i was going to advise people running for the first time, i would say, be yourself. Oryou are not a great greater, do not try to be a great greater, get a low heat context approach and respect the voters. They are more intelligent than most politicians think they are and thirdly, tell the truth readable get you in trouble every once in a while, but most often, it is the best, only an fairest answer and the answer that the people you serve deserve. Host what do you wish you had gone done this year that you did not . Guest i wish it could have done more for education in philadelphia. We have very little resources that we can devote to education other than part of our property tax, and we did a liquor by the drink tax, 100 goes to education. I said in 2000 that media corps would help these Education Systems because of the liquor tax, but i wish i had done more. The good news is that as governor, i was able to raise Education Funding around the state by 4. 2 billion. We were the only state in the union that increased education spending, even during the two recession years. In philadelphia, you have. Oughly 600 million a year unfortunately, some of was that was cut by my successor but it is any build back up. Host a call from paul, republican in lancaster, pennsylvania. Caller i want to ask you if hillary and margolis have in common . Well, marjorie is a relative, marjories son married Chelsea Clinton. Host what is she doing these days . Guest she is at the university of pennsylvania. One other thing host former representatives. Guest former representatives and paul asked a good question, marjorie cast the deciding vote on bill clintons budget, and as she cast that vote, republicans were yelling one term, waving goodbye. She did lose reelection based on the boat, but every time i going into Montgomery County and talk to Montgomery County audiences, i say, for all those republicans who voted against marjorie because she voted to raise your taxes by a couple thousand dollars a year, in a networth increased during the clinton years by about 8 million to nine lane dollars, so marjorie made a lot of money with that vote because it gave us a balanced budget and we had a Budget Surplus in the last four years that president clinton was president and that led to the blue economy. Marjorie margolis gets the credit for that understanding. Host john in virginia, democrat. You are the last call. Caller good morning, governor perry do you look great, as usual. Governor. You look great as usual. I watched that 60 minutes interview and i thought sad about my country. The reason i am calling, governor, is were forgetting one thing. Bernie sanders picked young people. 10 people graduated college today, they cannot get a job. The reason they dont get a job, we are importing employees overseas to take those jobs. You are from pennsylvania. These i. T. Issues, they can retrain our young people to get the jobs done of the employees to bring overseas. We need to be realistic. There are so many things the technology today. Guest let me interrupt you for a second because you are bright on and i want rights on and on to say while have time. The caller could not be more correct. I am all for immigration. It is something called the h1v government goes and does a we cannot find in the qualified americans to build these jobs. Theyre mostly computer software, hightech jobs and they come from bangladesh, india , pakistan and places like that and all over the world. They take jobs that americans should be doing, but the problem a faults but1v vis the American Education system fault because our kids are not educated enough in philadelphia, chicago, detroit, dallas, places like that. Our kids cannot fill those jobs. With a better educational system, they could and we would not need to import. They pay 50,000 a year at benefits. People in this city, 21yearolds would love to 50,000 a year with benefits. Same with nursing. We have a program that recruits all over the world to recruit nurses. Tooodness can make 50,000 100 thousand dollars, depending on overtime, with health benefits, and we do not train all of our kids well enough to fill those jobs, so you are about immigrants coming in and taking those jobs, but the reason they are taking the jobs is because our our educational system has failed. Of ourhe answer to all problems, crime, economy, it rests with improving educational systems in america. Donald trump,nd will do nothing to improve it. Hillary clinton is found in determined to make it better. 152,former governor, with his elections. We appreciate you coming over to cspan and good luck this week. Im sure we will see around. Guest thanks. If you get a chance, drop in on the politico event. Host coming up, we will talk to will bunch, a columnist with the other newspaper in philadelphia, Philadelphia Daily News. We will continue to take your calls as the Democratic Convention gets ready to kick off tomorrow in philadelphia. First, back to greta in the d. C. Greta time has put together a list of celebrities headed your way, including fergie, demi lovato, snoop dogg, debra messing, and those are some of them. A look at last week, donald trump has tweeted out this statistic about his speech and the republican National Convention in cleveland. Take a look. Greta according to nielsen ratings put together on the Huffington Post website, this graphic donald trump fails to live up to huge rnc dealership expectations. Take a look at day one of 2008, the rnc canceled their first day, so that is the viewership for the republican National Convention this year. K at the two and a three look at day two and 83, the red bar is compared and on day four, the numbers fall below the past two republican National Conventions. For id magazine has this on the website that the final tb rate variety magazine has this on the website that the for the rnc final night. 232 point 2 million total viewers across abc, cbs, fox, fox news channel, msnbc, cnbc and nbc, while technically they are big tv ratings, as donald trump promised in a tweet, it is worth airing in mind that it was the collective audience of 10 networks. Videoi want to show you a put together by the website for the. C upworthy. Com. It was founded by one of the ,ditors of the onion website and they ask kids to put together their impressions and drawings of the republican National Convention last week. Take a look. [video clip] [whistling] if you love our country, stand and speak and vote your conscience, vote for candidates. My hardworking mother introduced me to fashion and beauty. What happened to there is no lack of America Black or White America . There is just america [applause] [cheering] we are going to win so big. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. We are going to win so big. Thank you. Host washington journal is backlog in philadelphia. You can see Independence Hall with the cspan bus outside the National Constitution center. Our set for the week is up here on the third floor of the National Constitution center. We are joined by will bunch, a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News. Are you excited the convention is in town and is it worth it for the city . And a littlexcited exhausted after one week in cleveland. It was funny to get into the airport and leaving the craziness of one convention and here i am at another convention but it is exciting and we are excited to have you here. Welcome. Host are you glad the city is spending money to put on the convention . Guest i think so. I think the article conventions are an important part of democracy and they need to be held. I would like to see them more democratic. We may see that in philadelphia come of it i think it is an important part of democracy and it has to be somewhere carried if it has to be somewhat, why not told althea why not philadelphia. Good place for a chance for people to see what goes on here. Host there is a fight about superdelegates. Guest yes, absolutely. It, though the vote in the committee went yesterday, they will be able to bring that before, which that gets to my earlier point about opening up the convention. We may see for the first time and i dont know how many election cycles in actual contested vote on something. Not the candidate but a contested vote on an important issue because i think the superdelegate issue is important and interesting. The republicans probably wish they had superdelegates because a lot of the party elites were not happy with donald trump and superdelegates are with the party elites to put their stamp on the nomination process. On the democratic side, the situation is flipflopped. You have millions of Bernie Sanders supporters saying, the system was rigged against us as we were losing 500 connecting when the ballgame started. 500 to nothing when the ballgame started. It seems a good valid complaint. If youre going to have a primary system and say, our system is that the people at the party decide, then what is the superdelegate thing all about . That it wasbe implement it in the early 1970s and 1980s as a way for the party elites to keep control, to make sure that good people come to the convention, which is understandable, but also to make sure the next room candidate, some people viewed George Mcgovern in 1972, for example, as too extreme, and this was the way to nominate centralist candidate. Hillary clinton would have won anyway even if there had not been superdelegates but it would have been much closer and played differently without superdelegates. Our fourtht aside line for philadelphia residents. We want to hear from you and what you think about the convention, 202 7488003, is the number. Walking around town, you see a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters here. To have a lot come to protest be a part of this . Guest there are thousands. Leave the studio, i am headed 40 minutes outside of town to a campground in south jersey host a campground . Guest where hundreds of people are come over, certainly the east coast, and some farther to come to philadelphia to camp because there are no cut tilt accommodations no hotel accommodations. They will be marching, making a scene, and from what i can tell, people be taken aback between the contrast between cleveland, five and i just spent to six days in cleveland and i think the demonstrations were a lot less the people expected there, partly because i think there has been somewhat of a chilling effect. People of heard so much about the tear gas and the handcuffs that the Police Department purchased during all of my friends or like, hey, im going to cleveland this week and theyre like, do not get shot. Crazy stuff. It was nothing like that. Philadelphia will surprise people by being the opposite. Bernie sanders support is in the northeast, not that far, so you will see thousands of people straight into the city and they will be marches today, tomorrow, instead of the hundreds you saw in cleveland, i think youll see at least in the low thousands at some demonstrations and if not, more. Host will we see your story or column on the campground tomorrow . Guest absolutely. That fascinates me. That is why i am writing the column. Just the passion of people. It goes so much against the conventional wisdom of politics and the kind of savvy take that those of us in the media tend to have about politics because this is about the individuals and Hillary Clinton is the winner and bernie lost and he conceded the race and he has basically endorsed to the clinton. The fact that these people still feel so strongly that they want to be here, speak up to their issues, i think it is emblematic of the disconnect between the masses out there and the political insiders, and i think if you can go to a campground full of people the other thing is it is 99 degrees outside basically, so i mean it is kind of like the woodstock of heat and politics. Kind of crazy. I will be writing about that for tomorrow. Colling and from forest hill, new york, republican line. Go ahead. Caller thank you for taking my call. Mrs. Clinton made a point of introducing her v. P. As catholic. What does that mean . Anybody can sit in appeal in the catholic church. In the catholic church. To me, a practicing catholic follows the 10 commandments. Every baby is a gift from god, so why is it that so many politicians vote to destroy gods beautiful gift . See you in heaven, maybe, and may host marilyn in new york. Guest regarding some candidates, catholicism, interesting. Being a catholic cuts many different ways. She mentioned the abortion issue and apparently, tim kaine is one of the politicians in this country that does not personally support abortion but as a politician, i do not believe it is my job to impose that on the citizenry and that we should have reproductive rights basically. The same thing happened on the other end of the process with the death penalty. Tim kaine has also said that he morley does not support the death penalty, which is the position of the cap and church but he oversees or he oversaw 11 executions while he was governor of virginia. Being a catholic means many Different Things. He also went to Central America as a missionary for a while, inspired by his catholic beliefs, so i think his religion and his faith really is relative to who he is. I think it is a part of his biography. Host kathleen in ohio, democrat line. You are on with will bunch with the Philadelphia Daily News. Caller i have several points, but first, i watched the Rnc Convention with my 88yearold diehard democratic mother and she made amazing points, talking about how stupid it was that the media was focused on m elanias speech so much and that she got ted cruz sounded crazy, but donald trump made good points to her. He grew up working in unions and she thought he made that points, fascinating. I am makes sanders supporter, so we have differences. I think it is interesting that Mainstream Media has painted sanders supporters as a young. I am 64, involved in colorado, ohio with the Sanders Campaign and there are millions of people my age who supported his agenda years, 40 in the 30 years, and i thought it was interesting that tim kaine a bridge builder. My objections are to her support for the invasions of iraqis, that is where she built bridges as secretary of state, into syria and libya, and it think it is ironic that the dnc is being held at the wells fargo Convention Center because many of us do not want hillary to release her transcripts of their wall street speeches. Host all of that said, did you consider coming out here and joining the protest . Caller i sure did, but i am a caregiver, 88yearold mother and it is an honor and pleasure to do that for her. Thank you for calling in. What is your response . Things, one,le of i have [indiscernible] i was disappointed that donald trump did not address workingclass issues more. She mentioned her mother being 88 and growing up in the heyday of ohio was the heart manufacturing, many of them are closed, diminished. I heard little about that from donald trump. I think he was appealing to a motion, fear, but partsk if you are an auto worker in youngstown, ohio, and you lost your job and now you work part time to make ends meet, i have been Hearing Solutions coming out of the rnc and im not sure if we will hear it the best solutions out of the dnc. I want to hear what they have to say. Host you have been critical in your column about not releasing the names of the sponsors. Guest rights, and i had a chance to ask governor rendell about that in the earlier segment. It is a shame. He made the comment and it is true. Governor rendell in philadelphia because he generally speaks his mind, and that is why it is so disappointing that they want this information about the donors to the dnc health committee, the 60 million that it costs to come to the convention and they dont release the information. It is compiled, it exists to get a loan from a Governmental Agency in philadelphia. They released this Agency Information every 90 days, so they have these records and they will not make it public. Information was made public in 2000 and they will not say why or give a good explanation of why they dont release the information and why it is not transparent. You can speculate with so many Bernie Sanders protesters in town and they dont want the corporations that are not favored Bernie Sanders supo porters and they dont want it to be a protest, that is mike speculation, but we are at a time when we need more transparency. Barack obama promised he would be the most transparent president in u. S. History and he has not been. People have a lot of problems about request filled from the Obama Administration and this is part of the same problem and it is frustrating. Host mary in delaware, independent line. Go ahead with your question or comment for will bunch of daily news. Caller thank you. This is the first time i have been able to get in. I used to be a democrat and i left the party after nasa. My problem with the Democratic Party is they have lost touch with the working case. I dont care what hillary says, she is for it, tim kaine is for it, and with illegal immigration, you have more supply, whether american or legal, and you will not have wages go up because employers will say, take the job. Also, there transparency with hillary and lost it, she is lying i think the Democratic Party has become republican laced. That is my comments. Guest thanks for calling. I think you will hear those criticisms echoed from people in philadelphia and you make a good point regarding the transpacific partnership, which is the trade deal with asian nations. Hillary clinton worked on this trade agreement while she was secretary of state. Tim kaine, her running mate, has been a vocal supporter of the tpp. During the campaign, Bernie Sanders did not support this version. I read over the weekend that tim kaine is going to basically come out with the same position. I think what you heard there is voters do not believe this. Facen it just flies in the of their career records. They had been freetrade advocates. It speaks to some degree of the successful pressure that Bernie Sanders placed on the Hillary Clinton campaign and on the Democratic Party to listen to and maybee this rethink trade. I think a lot of voters are skeptical if clinton is elected president whether she will follow through. I am skeptical myself, to be honest. Host julie from virginia, democrat line. Go ahead. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I want to thank cspan for just being there and giving us the real deal. I just wanted to say i am a proud democrat because i support womens rights, protecting the environment, this party is more diverse than any other, to my knowledge. I do have several comments. I agree that this country should whopen to people to come in are fleeing countries where there are no human rights. I do have a problem with us providing food stamps, housing assistance, medical coverage for illegal immigrants. Thate a problem with issue. I also have a problem that we have not seen Donald Trumps tax records. I do not know why this issue has been shoved under the rug because i think it is mostly because it keeps so many airwaves with rhetoric to double the tension from this tax issue. Im angry that the socalled 2 has removed Bernie Sanders from this election. I am angry that they have manipulated us by forcing two nominees on us that pretty supporters did not want to see in office. Host we will leave it there. I think we got your point. Will bunch . Guest she brought up Donald Trumps taxes. I think what you heard there is i think donald trump is our deep paying the political penalty for not releasing his returns. It is pretty clear that whatever he comes up from monthtomonth, it is clear that those returns will not be seen during the campaign. A lot of people speculate this because maybe he is not as rich anhe says, and that would be investment if he was not a multibillionaire, like he says he is. I think it is widely known he would not release the records and that is already hurting him a lot with the voters and i think you heard that on the call. Host is there anything we do not know about these two . Guest [laughter] host what will we learn between now and november . Guest i think people will be watching for how they respond in different situations. To me, the most telling moments during the campaign have not been you things we learned about their biographies, you are right, we know most of their life history and story, but we do get to see how they respond to situations. There was a lot of talk after the horrific tragedy in a land of about donald trump and his response we came out with the tweet that seemed to be more like i told you so, this was going to happen and it did not seem to be a lot of empathy for the victims in the tweeps weet. In the t Hillary Clinton provided the more typical response traditional response. And for better or worse, we will see situations like that from now to november and i think that is what people will be watching. Can you imagine donald trump as the president or Heather Clinton is the president and how would they respond to situations . They are in prepresident ial mode right now, so we can get the article himself what they are really like under pressure, and that is what i think voters will be watching for, more than their biography at this point. Host another democrat, debbie in oregon. We are listening. Caller good morning. I cannot believe i got through. [laughter]. Was going to comment your guest was saying that there is a woodstock camp outside of town for bernie, people, i kind of resent that. Through all of the process, that is all i have been hearing, bernie is like a little puppy nipping their pant legs and all the news stations. They constantly kept adding in those 500 superdelegates that she had when she came out of New Hampshire . Won thein iowa, she town halls by six point causes, and the odds makers in daegis say that is impossible. Then she went into New Hampshire , i believe, for the primary there and comes out and she has copies 500 superdelegates, and they kept adding them into her delegates along the way. Actually, there were only a few delegates apart. Anger as au do bernie supporter . Guest older yes, i am 61 years and this is the first year that i have really understood the convention stuff. I always thought it was one vote, one person my vote counted and people said, nobody votes, and i was thinking, that is crazy. Why did they not vote . Host you heard what she had to say, but we have not brought up the leaked dnc emails. How significant are they going to be today and in one month from now . Guest i think going into the convention, the sense was that there was going to be a push for the deescalation between the tension between the Bernie Sanders people and Hillary Clinton people produce on it when he went to New Hampshire and endorsed hillary. Over the weekend, i have been surprised. Nobody expected the wikileaks and the emails to be released. That was a surprise, but i have been surprised by the way the fire has been soaked instead of put out. Tim kaine seems like a nice guy, but he is definitely more moderate and the type of guys president ial pick that hillary supporters were looking to see. Mentioned the trade issue, and there are other issues with the left wing in the party, and then write, hours releasedu had emails and i dont think there was an enormous smoking gun in the email, but it will show what people saw all along, this notsosubtle buyers coming from the dnc for hillary and against bias coming from the dnc for hillary, and i have thousands of people coming to philadelphia and they were already looking to put up a fight and now you have given them to more pieces of red meat, basically, so i think that will stoke some of the anger over the next four days. From jerry is calling philadelphia on her independent line. Good morning. You were on with will bunch. Caller good morning. Mr. Bunch, i appreciate and enjoy your work for the daily news. I have a question about the protesters in just mentioned. You mentioned they will be a ofh bigger presence protesters in philadelphia than there was in cleveland. How is your assessment of the convention is going to deal with that protest . Do you think they will try to ignore it, trivializing, repress it . Or heaven for bid, date acknowledge the legitimacy and validity of the criticisms of the party and try to integrate them into the proceedings . Host are you planning on attending . Caller i will be monitoring events from a low site and less a get pulled into the protest. Host [laughter] what does that mean . Caller it means that i agreed with the protesters and i worked at ground zero, and if time will be involved because i believe in what the protesters are doing. Host ground zero is the Wells Fargo Center. Caller no, the other ground zero, the Convention Center. Host the Convention Center. Thank you, sir. You heard him. Guest jerry made some good points. Forget, the way we do conventions nowadays, there is this law, this security zone, much smaller in philadelphia than it was in cleveland, but the wells wall along fargo center and protesters can only get so close to the proceedings. Asked or youer said, do you think it will open it up to the protesters . It is hard to do the way it has been set up. Protesters will not be getting [indiscernible] i think their views will be reflected. Bernie sanders as 1900 delegates out of the 4700, that is a lot. You can make quite a showing, and most of them are not the type of people who are going to ofl in line, so i think some what you hear out on the streets will be reflected inside the hall. Onwill see this vote superdelegates and there could be other flights as well four fights as well four fights as well. We still do not know if there will be a wall call, where all 1900 people will be able to cast their votes for Bernie Sanders or if they try to do this on a voiced vote, so there may not be drama about who the nominee will be, but if you are political junkie, there will be drama for the convention. Host the Convention Kicks off right now at 4 00 p. M. Eastern time tomorrow. Mike, north carolina, independent, your turn. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. Sayinglling because i am i am an independent, but i never believed in really been with any party. It should be about issues more than anything else. In other words, if something was broken you a democrat, and the democrat did not want to fix it, would you vote republican . It doesnt make sense. It should just be issues. Obama, when he was running for president , he said change and transparency like mr. Bunch said. What do you know more than what in . Did before he came there was the transparency. People are frustrated. It is not fear. People want change, they want actual, visible change. , how do we get to 19 trillion . How did they get that far . Why is it that way . All right, we have a lot of questions on the table. Anything to add, will bunch . Story i think that is the of the conventions, cleveland and here, which is that the metaphysical between the elites and the kind of concerns that the average rankandfile folder has. When i was in cleveland, it was not quite comparable to what we see in philadelphia, but there were many donald Trump Supporters who just came to cleveland. I attended a rally on the first day of the convention, or you had bikers for trump, christians for trump, all these trump affinity groups and they wanted to may sure their voices were heard. I think that is what has marked 2016. People are frustrated, a lot of people, theyre looking for answers and i think the political system and set up giving people what they want, and i think people do not always know what they want themselves, but they know they want Something Different and you will hear that a lot this week. Host will bunch, Philadelphia Daily News columnist, thanks. We have about 20 minutes left in the washington journal on this sunday, the day before the dnc begins. We want to hear from you, 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. 202 7488002 independents. Build up your residence, we want to hear what you think about the convention, philadelphia residents, we want to hear what you think about the convention, 202 7488003. We will take calls in the minute heard we are located at the National Constitution center all week in philadelphia. You can see Independence Hall over the shoulder. Here at the National Constitution center, we took a tour of one of the centers. [video clip] here we are in another one of our exhibitions called headed to the white house. This will be throughout the Election Year and it is about celebrating the election and teaching about the president ial election process and all the different parts of the constitution in the process. It is broken up into four sections, so youre learning how to be the candidate, thinking about how you would join the race if you would be a candidate, and then you get to the section called earned a nomination. This is the part where you get to worry about the primary process, how that works, go to the convention, do things like make your own campaign button, get a sticker, say, vote for me for president. Like i said, we are in the so it has section, polls that look like you are on the floor and it talks about each estate and their primaries. You can watch footage from past conventions and to get the excitement and feeling of what happens on the floor of the it will belike happening and told all week. We also have great artifacts, artifacts of conventions past, funny hats that people would wear, Different Things you would get at the convention, a souvenir, a tasty cake from the republican National Convention the last time it was held in fun, so just really interactive activities, all about roleplaying and putting yourself in the shoes. In the end, you go into the oval office and he can sit and take a photo behind the oval office ask as president. It is just great the kids and families of all ages. Nside the Wells Fargo Center senator sanders has appeared on cnn, as well as abc this week with george stephanopoulos. Heres what he had to say about the wikileaks story and the Democratic National Committee Chairwoman debbie schultz. [video clip] i also said for a variety of reasons, Debbie Scholz should not be chair of the dnc, and i think these emails reiterate that reason of why she should not be, but i think the main emails, not only the the main reason is we need a Democratic Party that is breaking working people into the party, that is bringing young inple, all of the people this country who are sick of an economy that works well for the 1 while the middle class continues let me interrupt you. Bernie sanders our campaign was about revitalizing american democracy. I want to see that incorporated into the Democratic Party and i do not believe that Debbie Scholz is the one to do that. George should she stepped aside as honorary chair of the convention and denied a primetime speaking slot . Bernie sanders i think she should resign and i think we need a new chair, who will lead us in the different direction, and that has taken on the billionaire class, fighting for an agenda that works for working families. Reta sanders appearing on abc this week, that already airing, say that deadbeat should step down. She would not have a primetime speaking role. She will be doing the housekeeping business that you normally see the chair of the party doing at the convention. In atats will be gaveling the Wells Fargo Center tomorrow for their first day at 4 00 p. M. Eastern time. Throughout the week, the Late Afternoon start for the democrats every day, and then they will continue through the night. Host back to your calls in philadelphia. Lets hear from tony in fort lauderdale. Independent line. Good morning. Caller i was trying to get with governor rendell. I went to give a quick shout out to him. I saw him on the tarmac and he did it without honesty and i admire that. That is in you can tell the true measure of a person. Ask the last guest, is the Democratic Party socialist party no and is there any room and that Democratic Party for socialism . It seems that there are so many aggressiveosing as and i really want to know. I cannot vote for either the candidates. Honestly, i couldve voted for governor rendell and governor kasich, but not these two clowns. Have a good day. Host are you a socialist . Caller not ever. I left a socialist country. I fled socialism. I know what it is. I am seeing it in venezuela, cuba. There are people who think that democratic socialism is different but they are sadly mistaken. Democracy is about choosing your government. Socialism is a way of organizing your economy. They are entirely different, and tying them together is the typical socialist canard that would slip this in and say, we are just democratic socialist. We do not believe in controlling the needs of production socially, but we do. If there socialist, they must leave that. Tony in fort lauderdale. , chris from ancestor up next, chris from manchester in the united kingdom. Go ahead. Caller all i wanted to say was your guest was talking about unique change, look to brexit and what they did there. They took up change. The people can get what they want. Host do you support that change of the u. K. . Caller i do. Go heartedly. Host why . Caller freedom. Freedom for the people. Host have you been following the american elections closely and what do you think so far . Caller i think if you need change, you need to change your personnel. Chris int is manchester, england. As you can see, the cspan buses parked near Independence Hall and the liberty bell is stationed just to the right. That building halfway between the bus and Independence Hall. Streetare down on this at center city, cs in front of the National Constitution center. We will be here all week. Jerry is in maryland, democrat line. Caller how are you doing . Host how are you . Caller ok. Forve been trying to call six years. Finally, i got to, and not to tie your time up but i wanted to be one point out. I wanted to call i guess you had that name bunch but i guess he is gone but what i wanted to ask is doing the email hearings, hillary said the same thing both times. Look whenople did not they had to before congress and the questions she was answering and how she was answering the question and it stayed the same. If you could help me out, i would appreciate it very much. Host what were you looking to get . Im not sure i understand. Caller just trying to open the eyes a little more of the voters that are against hillary and trump calling hillary crooked, so on, so one, but i wanted the voters to see, and enter the can go on the computer and bring it back up to see what went on in the hearings. Host those are all available on www. Cspan. Org, our website, lets go to jane in california, another democrat. You convention is about to begin, what do you expect and what you want to see . Caller i want to see a lot more differences drawn, the call to the personalities between donald and hillary because that is what it is and maybe what the culture is, but as a brandnew supporter, i do not understand why everybody says that bernie supporters they go over to trump because they are mad at how bernie was treated. If people would only look at the of both parties that come out, it is using any bernie supporter that could vote in that,n and bring and i had to go to the internet. Nobody is calling for what the representatives and senators are anyway, i just think there ought to be more information and hopefully that will come out on the Democratic Convention. They kept quiet during the republican. Host next is susan in the suburbs of philadelphia, good morning. Yes, governor rendell said education is bad in the u. S. , well, so is claritin in pennsylvania. It starts with education with [indiscernible] like baseball and football, it education and the name is dr. Earl bradley. Do you hear me . Host thank you. Elena in california, democrat line. Good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. I became a resident in america i have worked for the person but the issues they promote and i voted democrat all the time until now. ,ow after i see the democrats. Hey break the constitution they do not care of the law and the people law, and they do whatever they want with this democracy becoming like more than should be host . All rights should be. Host all right. Lets go next to greta in washington, d. C. Ta more from the convention this week, apologizing to Bernie Sanders campaign over the dnc emails, saying, this needs to be addressed. Take a look. [video clip] first of all, as vice chair, i went over to see that Sanders Campaign and i apologize. I think allegations, emails, insensitivity, stupidity needs to be addressed and we are going to address it. Chair ofat is the vice the Democratic National committee appearing on abcs this week. About the choice of Vice President for Hillary Clinton, her running mate, senator tim metro the Washington Post section has a story, if clinton wins, who would replace virginias kaine in the senate . Whom to appoint to the Senate Democrats and the white house . Grea the last timet the governor did that in the late 1970s, they were not pleased. Democratic when Bill Anderson of minnesota, who died last week, was rejected by voters in his estate. Governor say that mcculloughs bench is thin and they said this about his options. Most begin with the states three democratic congressmen, robert bobby scott, gerald e connolly, and don buyer. Greta another piece i went to shave from the Washington Post this morning, the editorial posted online on july 22, but it appears in this mornings edition. Mr. Trumps dangers to america and this is what they write this year, we will follow the campaign as always, offering honest views and all the candidates, but we cannot salute the republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse and this fall. Greta unprecedented move by the Washington Post paper to say that donald trump is not fit for the presidency and cannot be endorsed. Let me just end with this the New York Post in washington has this headline donald trump has been treating about it already this morning residents halfbrother is voting fed up with his halfbrothers demonstration and will be talking to donald trump on election day. He has switched sides partly because his sibling and Hillary Clinton killed his friend in libya. Backlog in philadelphia, a few minutes to go before the end of the journal. Monica in ohio, democrat line. You convention is about to kick off. What are your thoughts . Caller i am calling us an educated person who is in cleveland and watched donald trump, and i will to you after listening about the Washington Post, i can tell you right now that donald trump scares me. He is an individual who is half crazed and has no idea how he is going to make america safe again. One thing hillary has to focus on is the points of what the Democratic Party is about. Howve seen articles about the Democrat Party has gone to the left and we really have not gone to the left. We really need to take the Bernie Scholz side and say, we are offered the same thing and unite together. Forget the protesting. Fear make us do something that would be crazy. We should stick to the point and go for hillary and get this out of the way and make sure donald trump does not get in. He is a nightmare. Host john is in las vegas on the republican line. As we shape inside the Wells Fargo Center in philadelphia. As we show you inside the Wells Fargo Center in philadelphia. Inler i am calling in regards to the conventions for the democratic and republican parties. The president ial candidates are picking the Vice President s according to what will get them elected and not with the peoples voice are. It is realistically the American People are just fed up with the way these parties are running these campaigns, democrats sway and all theng funding to these illegal aliens, people in the country that cannot find work. The Republican Party put people to work, they put people back in place in the United States back on the map. The american tax payer is tired of the burden of paying for people coming through this country and absorbing every benefit while the working people pay the tab. It is time that the president ial candidate realized this and i think the Republican Party is on the right track. Yes, donald trump is a little outlandish in his comments, but at least he has a direction and we are not going down the same path we have been. The last eight years have been a sham, shamble, and American People have been ripped off of hundreds of trillions of dollars paying off all these big and going this country and their people back and to fix all the social programs. Host what do you do in las vegas, john . Caller im a supervisor for Utility Company in las vegas. Host are you ready for all the political attention your state is going to get . Caller i sure am. Host independent line. Caller i wanted to call in and howi think its incredible i agree with how these campaigns are being run is ridiculous. I was voting for Bernie Sanders. Reading up on all these things. Ive never really been interested in politics except the obama campaign. Even with both of his campaigns i never did canvassing, i never went to train stations to push out turnout. Ive never done anything like that and i dont see the same kind of return coming from Hillary Clintons campaign. They are in the same old same old information. I feel like
