History. They are asking you to tell us how the government could better prevent lone wolf attacks and other attacks of domestic terrorism. Republicans can call in on 202 7488001. Democrats at 202 7488000. At 202 7488002. You can also find us on twitter and race book. And facebook. A. M. ,use is in at 10 00 the senate is also in at 10 00 a. M. There is a briefing at 3 00 and the question of how the government prevents thomistic terrorism will be on the minds of members as they enter the briefing. Here is how the New York Times puts that question today in the headline on the front page. Exposes gaps in fighting isis. The story notes that investigators face the question of how much the killings were the act of a deeply disturbed man and how much he was driven by religious or political ideology. Whatever drove him to carry out the shootings, his actions highlight the difficulty for the American Government in trying to address a new style of terrorism. Random acts of violence that they have been partly inspired by the Islamic State but were not directed by the group leaders. At the classified briefing happening today, members Briefing Members will be james comey, the director of homeland ofurity and the director national counterterrorism. James comeyt outlined the investigation so intonto the shooting and the background of the gunmen. Here is what he has to say. Aware ofey we became him in may, two thousand 13. He was working as a Contract Security guard and he made statements that were inflammatory and contradictory that concerned his coworkers about terrorism. First, he claimed family connections to al qaeda. He said he was a member of hezbollah. An organization that is the bitter enemy of the islamic isil. He said he hoped that Law Enforcement would read his apartment and assault his wife and child so he could martyr himself. When this was reported to us, the florida fbi Office Opened an investigation. Over the next 10 months, we determined whether or not he was a terrorist threat. Our investigation involved introducing Confidential Sources to him, recording conversations ,ith him, following him reviewing transactional records from his communications and searching all Government Holdings for any possible connections or derogatory information. We interviewed him twice. He admitted making statements that his coworkers reported but explained he did it in anger, because he thought his coworkers were discriminating against him and teasing him because he was muslim. We closed thes, preliminary investigation. In july, 2014,r the killers name surfaced again in an indirect way. The miami office was investigating be florida man who , withimself up in syria the group in conflict with isil. We learned from the investigation that the killer new him casually from attending the same mosque in that area of florida. The investigation turned up no ties of any consequence. Course of that investigation, a witness told us , when wondering if you knew anybody else who might be radicalized that he once was buterned about the killer, the witness had concluded that he later got married and had a child and got a job as a security guard, and so he was no longer concerned about him. Our investigation again turned and interviewed the killer to find out whether he had significant contacts with the suicide, determined he did not and the great continued, focusing on the suicide bomber with no further focus on the orlando killer. We will continue to look forward and backward in this investigation. We will leave no stone unturned and we will work all day and all night to understand the path to that terrible night. We will look hard at our own work to see whether there is something we should have done differently. So far, the honest answer is, i dont think so. Anything in reviewing our work but our agents should have done to family but we will do this in an open and honest way and be transparent. Host james comey will go into more details in the classified briefing that is happening for all members of congress at 3 00 p. M. Today. Have several members of congress on our program today. We will be asking them about information they will be looking for from federal investigators. We are asking viewers, how can the government best prevent the mystic terrorism . The president ial candidates put out suggestions of their own with different speeches from donald trump and Hillary Clinton. They are described in the Financial Times donald trump double down on the approach that hisopes will support hawkish president in waiting. Hillary clinton warned against demonizing islam and demanded a dedicated team tasked with tracking down global terrorists and tougher guncontrol laws. We will take you through more details of the speeches but the phone lines are open. I want to go to joe in georgia on the line for republicans. Caller good morning. I heard donald trump speech and i thought it was an excellent speech. I think it will help them win the election over Hillary Clinton. We need to increase our intelligence activities and be a lot tougher on immigration. Know, i wont mention the persons name, but the fbi had information about him. And his tendency to be provocative about america, and i think they ought to have arrested him and maybe they could have prevented this tragedy. Is,i think the main point donald trump will be much tougher on terrorism than Hillary Clinton would be. I predict donald trump will be the president of the United States. Host we will take our viewers through some points of Donald Trumps plans from his speech. He wants to suspend immigration from countries with proven histories of terrorism against the u. S. And allies. To screen applicants to know whether they are affiliated with radical groups. He wants to reject calls for more gun control. He condemned importing radical islamic terrorism. Hillary clinton offered a different set of proposals. Resources to increase for intelligence and lawenforcement officials, work with u. S. Allies to disrupt terrorist networks. She does not want to declare a war on religion, she wants radicalization and she wants a ban on assault weapons. Details to get into from those different proposals but those are the outlines of the two speeches from the presumed president ial candidates from each party. We want to hear your thoughts. Maryland, next from and independent. Good morning. Caller good morning. Here is what i think. ,ou cannot stop lone wolves they will always act on their own. But what i want to say now is willPolitical Correctness not resolve the issue of islam. The president and the democrats are very disappointing because ory wont call islam terrorism by its name. To do something. And the best way for confronting it is to have the muslims condemn it. I dont see any Muslim Country come forward to condemn this. When they dont do this, a lot of people will just consider it is normal to do that. So muslims need to come out and denounce it. Thank you. Host he mentioned president obama. Obama has spoken a couple of times in the wake of the attack. It was announced yesterday he will be traveling to orlando on thursday to pay respects to victims and stand in solidarity with the community. We will look for more details on the trip in the coming days. Up next in pennsylvania, a democrat. Good morning. Caller thank you, cspan. Itgestion would be to different the departments are not coordinating their lists. And this man should have still been on a list, it seems to me. Universal list, all the way from the top down, into the small mom and pop gun , and then, you can just look at the list and say, this person is suspected. He should have stayed on that list. Him twice, erviewed it seems to me he should have been on the list. Furthermore, as far as assault weapons, i have heard people say, well, we like assault weapons because they are fun to shoot. All well and good but they should only be allowed in and not allowed on the street. Nobody should be allowed to buy them. Anymore. I know they are out there and that is part of the argument. But if they started preventing them from people who have them and confiscating them well, i dont want to go there but maybe, start small. Just allow assault weapons only in gun ranges. Topics we of those will talk about with our guests who will be here today. Two members of congress will be here to answer questions. Will be here from eight 8 30. And we will be joined from Eric Swalwell on the Intelligence Committee. We will talk to both of them about those issues. Edward is in connecticut, a republican. Caller good morning. Thank you for cspan. A couple of points to make. One of the points is the background checks that go on for most of the purchases of guns. Thatnk my opinion is everyone who applies for a weapon has to have a background check should have to provide five references. Family members, coworkers that way, i think you could get a better understanding of the theon through the personality and behaviors. I also want to mention that you know, i go to asia. Third world countries like the philippines. Any public place to go, they have security. A light pat down. You walk through a metal the doctor. A check to make sure you dont have weapons. You have to open your purse. And that is it. And essentially, that is what we have to do now. I think those are the shortterm fixes that need to happen around all of the philosophical nonsense. Host are you a gun owner yourself . Caller i have a shotgun. That i keep in the closet. I dont carry a weapon. I dont have a permit. That is it. I just dont think it is appropriate to carry a side arm in public. Host why is that, edward . Caller i just think it invites trouble. Weapon,g a dangerous something could happen. Host that was edward in connecticut. Annette is up next. Good morning. Caller good morning. The first thing is that i think our government has to take the nra and stop is the footing around with them. Theave to get the guns off streets. There is no reason for the highpowered guns on the street. You can find another hobby. I also believe screening has to be done but it has to be done a lot stricter, including Mental Health checks. A common denominator seems to be incrediblel and the weapon that can knock down how many people in a minute. And the last thing i want to say is that we have already hit on this this morning but given yesterday they sold hundreds more guns. So it seems like there will be people who are going to defy anything that we try to do, unless you get the stupid guns off the street. They give for listening. Nra. You mentioned the chris cox is the director of the National Rifle association he has a column in todays usa today that reads, radical islamic terrorists are not determined by guncontrol laws. Brussels didnt prevent the terrorist attack there. Frances strict gun didnt stop the terrorist attacks with automatic rifles and grenades. Us to admit that radical islam is a hate crime waiting to happen. To only way to beat them is destroy them, not destroy the rights of lawabiding americans to defend ourselves. There are several columns and editorials and Opinion Pieces over guncontrol in the wake of the attack. Heres the Editorial Board of the New York Times. Noting, americas gun violence epidemic is a Public Health crisis. If it were treated like other Health Crisis is, it would be studied in death and attacked with Rate Research approaches. But republicans have blocked that approach. There are afraid of what it will show. As long as lawmakers refused to take even the most basic step, a new city will incredibly will inevitably claim the gruesome mental. We want to hear from you on this question. Reduces the government domestic terrorism . The meal is waiting in alabama. Go ahead. Caller good morning. We have to defend ourselves as best we can with the margins. Kill go key is to right after the source of the terrorism. I will use the word isis but i use that in a broad sense because there are other jihadist groups and i will point out that we have domestic terrorism homegrown reasons, not associated with islam. But you have to kill the source. Take off his head. Destroy his heart. You cant kill an idea but you can destroy the carrier. To lookee that we need for ways to tighten up and build up our ability to fight this at home. Host can i ask. Call for increased military presence in iraq and syria . Boots on the ground to send in large amounts of troops to finish the job . Caller no. At this point, no. Let me come back to that in a moment because my Central Point is that we dont want to aggregate our fight to control violence. That is not the right approach. I cant emphasize that enough. ,s far as boots on the ground things are going slower than i would like. I have thought about ways we could have him set up a bit but we are succeeding in iraq and syria. The problem is the spread. You have to go for the heart. Let me say a quick word on that. The key is a Public Awareness campaign. And counter isis propaganda campaigns. Use it dont restrict it. That is sources of intel. I would say that with all of our accepts the u. S. Muslims and islam. Islam is not a problem. It is the perversion of islam. The central tenet of terrorism is divide and conquer. To force the mainstream to segregate. You can go back to history and find that. We are on a path to defeating isis in syria and iraq. To bring ine need Public Awareness. One of the things i worry about the confidential briefing for all members of congress . Whyvery briefing isnt there a briefing for all members of the country . And i dont mean revealing sources and methods but we need to involve the public heavily and we need to involve the Muslim Community within this country and in other nations. That point, a few of the papers today note that donald trump takes a different tone when it comes to muslim communities in this country. And muslim immigrants. A story from the New York Times notes, assailing muslims, trump tosses pluralism aside. That is one of the headlines. Pasted painted a false picture of abetted by democrats destroying American Values and disrupting the public. Among other things, he chillingly accused Muslim Americans of complicity with terrorists. The following shouldnt have to be repeated but mr. Trump makes it necessary. Most american muslims are as patriotic as lawabiding as most american christians. Many have fought for and are fighting for the United States in dangerous theaters far away. Mr. Trump doess about the muslims is to set the nation down a dangerous road it has trod, to its eventual regret, in the past. The Donald Trump Campaign is pulling the press credentials of the Washington Post, accusing them of unfair coverage. The Trump Campaign put out a statement on that yesterday. Two hampton, virginia. Season, good morning. Caller good morning. The question is, how to reduce domestic terrorism . Go to the white house and clean it out. I noticed yesterday that you used care anyone can go on the internet and look up care. They are a coconspirator of the holy land foundation. They are just as bad as everyone else. But anyway. I say, clean out the white house. The council for American Islamic relations put out a statement over the weekend condemning the attacks. We showed part of the statement yesterday. The thing i want to say is that we need to defeat isis, obviously. We need to get someone in the white house who is not afraid to go after them. Just put it upl front and get rid of it. In the second world war, we didnt play around. We went over there and kicked butt. A call for more troops on the ground in iraq and syria . Caller if necessary, that is what we need to do. Games, to go in and run away and go back and back and forth and back and forth. We cant do that now. We have to go in, take it over, and finish it. Get rid of whoever we have to get rid of and be america again. Like to takewould over iraq and syria until the Islamic State is wiped out . Well, im just saying isis. Islam people who are in and they are good people. Talking about isis. Find out where isis is and wipe it out. Get rid of it. Get rid of all of the al qaeda and these places that are against america. As far as to mystic terrorism as far as domestic terrorism, if ngu find someone who is planni on doing something to mystic give him the and Death Penalty. Federal investigators and lawmakers are struggling with that right now. In the wake of these attacks how to find who the lone wolves are and how to catch them. Were asking for your suggestions. We are talking to members of congress before they happen to head into the classified briefing with the fbi director and the Homeland Security director. What questions would you want to ask and what suggestions would you make . George is in tennessee. Dont i dont see why we make people who are watching the news here from other countries take a Lie Detector Test . And the Second Amendment is not there because it is a hobby. That is all. Host david in california is next. Caller yes, good morning. Know, within a few hours of this incident, so many people were already talking about oh, isuy is a member of affiliated with isil. He is affiliated with this group or another. But a lot of people have to that and ask themselves a number of questions. Booths going at into iraq initially, obviously we had reasons for doing that. But how long do you keep american troops on the ground in afghanistan and iraq . We have been here for a while. We are people to defend themselves. 4000 lives and 2 trillion killed, whylives wouldnt the iraqi country have stood up to defend their own country . They have been trained and funded. Theshouldnt their blood be one that is defending it . That is what brought isis to this point. At the same time, just because somebody picks up a phone in the bathroom and says, i support al qaeda or this person or that group, it does not actually mean is what influence this. At the end of the day, people are going to have to make a decision. Even if that decision means not taking a stand, one way or the other. Because everybody wants to talk ,bout San Bernardino radicalized by islam. This guy radicalized by islam. Incidents in schools, cinemas americans. I think people have to make a choice as to what type of country we want to live in. Thank you. David int was california. A few tweets. Laura writes in, the war on terror has backfired. Wish i would hear one of the candidates say that. Jody writes, when all congress does is hold moments of silence about gun control, i will turn my back to them in protest. Rights, it may be necessary to limit the number of immigrants into the u. S. For a while. The fbi needs less stringent rules in peter them. And one other tweet from another zones. Ban all guns free ban all gun free zones. Ban all gun free zones. Ban all gun free zones. That is the conversation this morning. We are talking about the background of the killer in the nightclub attack. Here is some of the information that has come out. Omar the biography of mateen. He is the son of afghan immigrants. He moved to florida in 1991. Spent his years in port st. Lucie. He had an associate degree in criminal justice in 2006. He began working for the Florida Department of corrections. Workn six months he found with a private security company. One part of the story that has come out in the past monday four in a and other papers, is that he hung out at years before the attack. Used a says the suspect gay chat mobile app to message them for months. So some is reporting that is the connection to that day club. Before committing that attack that killed 49 people. William is in florida. Go ahead. Yes, i am looking at this and i think we need to address what is happening here. It is the whole issue of hate crimes. I am a teacher. We see little kids, there is no hatred. There is something that happens in our system that takes these mines and shift some. I think it is extremism. When i look at the hate groups in america, they are domestic terrorist groups. Before this issue of hate groups and hate crimes, that would have been a terrorist group. The lynchings and burnings and so forth. As a country, this needs to be addressed. The whole legal marriage issue. We have christian conservatives or radical groups that put out that there are certain people who are not entitled to the same rights as you and they contest that. Win, you havethey a group of people who are upset about that. And i think a lot of the things we have to address is the hate. Because the hate groups turn into terrorist groups. And again, it is not just isil. Host are there people who can disagree with that, politically, that arent hate groups . It seems like you are classifying all of those people as potential hate groups or terrorists . Caller well, the thing is, the hate groups develop people into terrorists. If you hate someone, there is a fine line. , dole who carry out acts you understand what im saying . If you look at what is going on the court had to approve gay marriage but there are people who are upset with that. They feel that they are not entitled. They really felt that was something that is affecting their religion and so forth. Blah, blah, blah. There are certain individuals who will take matters into their own hands. So what i say is that you have to address the whole issue of the policy wasn developed, because prior to aat, they would have been terrorist group but now they are a hate group. Host all right. There were many religious groups who put out tweets and comments on social media, condemning the attack that happened in florida. Indiana, a democrat. Good morning. Caller good morning. I would like to let people know that as far as the Assault Rifles go, they talked about the firepower, which is how many rounds. And they talk about how quick it is to reload, they dont tell you about the penetration. I am a former police officer. I have been on the wrong end of one. Rounds were hit but kicked out. This guy shot at me and the only thing i could do was make myself as small as possible because i couldnt return fire. Riflesounds and assault shoot and they go through you. You wouldnt want to be living in a wooden house with plasterboard because it would go right through it. Host there is a lot of reporting yesterday about ar15s being the weapon here and late yesterday, overnight they reported that it was a different kind of rifle. It was an mc x rifle. Pat milton reported out of florida that it was actually the rifle that the attacker was armed with. Handgunth a glock 17 purchased on june 5. We will show you what that weapon looks like. The sixhour mc x. This is a tweet there from abc news. Sources say that was the weapon. Not the ar15. Does that make a difference . Caller no. It doesnt make a difference. It is just a different manufacturer. Is all that is. With different ideas. If yous of weapons i cant think of any Law Enforcement officers that would recommend that private citizens use those for protection in the home and definitely not in a car. It is just a common sense thing that apparently donald trump doesnt understand. It is a weapon to kill people. That is exactly what it is. A guyher day i heard saying that he hunts wild boar with it. But you would have to make sure that round goes the , aetration of that weapon policeman doesnt want to hide behind a car. Of fact, you want to hide behind the biggest living tree you can hide behind and that is the best cover you could get. Tuscaloosa. We are talking about how the government can best prevent domestic terrorism. What are your thoughts . You keep saying, should we send more boots on the ground but actually, we dont have to do that. Foxs military ouryst who is in charge of most Successful Air campaign in history. Desert storm. And also senator ted cruz. All of them have made the point that all we have to do is andease our airstrikes compare that to over 1000 airstrikes a day during desert storm. We just need to dramatically increase our airstrikes. We could take out isis. In 23q and syria months. Host is it a matter of finding more targets for loosening restrictions on when pilots can use weapons . Caller both. We have ridiculous rules of engagement where the pentagon and obama will not allowed our government to target main headquarters because they might kill civilians in the basement. That these are ridiculous rules of engagement. Need to have the same rules of engagement that are authorized by the International Rules of warfare that we had in world war ii. I want to point our viewers to the fact that we can have covered the rules of engagement issue before. Ityou mentioned briefly potential president ial candidate hehe turned down the said he was not going to run for president. He came on the show a few months back and talked about the rules of engagement and what sort of restrictions that we have with in iraqoyment overseas and afghanistan. So you may want to check out that segment. You can find that on cspan. Org. Innow go to daniel pennsylvania. A democrat. Go ahead. Caller yes, can you hear me . Yes. Is, howhe question government can prevent domestic terrorism. And if the things they could do congressmana quoting words from the bible which actually advocates the murder of homosexuals. As far as the person in orlando, with the terrorist incident that he wasieve crazy. Oppressede was an homosexual himself. Was not able to deal with it. He went berserk. That is all i have to say. Thank you for taking my call. Host the wall street journal today has a chart showing countries where homosexual acts are illegal and in some cases, punishable by death. Are in red and are mostly in the middle east under sharia law, homosexuality is punishable by death. Countries in orange is where there is a Death Penalty under sharia law. And then countries in gray on the map are where samesex acts are illegal. Also doington post reporting on the history of the Islamic State when it comes to their war on homosexuality. , which advocates for lgbt writes more than two dozen executions of men and women which to crimes. The Extremist Group released thems that appear to show pushing men accused of homosexual activity off roofs of buildings. Killed at least 16 people through that method. If you want to read more on the history of that, it is on the Washington Post. Marcia, good morning. Caller hello, are you there . Host yes, go ahead. Caller my take on this is a little different. I am thinking the issue of domestic terrorism or crime or violence has to do with the idea of suffering. It is very idealistic, i know but there has never been the issue of ending suffering. Theses because you set up sides that are passionate and then you have the mechanism to build it into continuing so you never have the dialogue. People would just laugh at you because there is no effort to have the dialogue. There is something about the families. Go ahead. Host how do you start the dialogue . If you are talking to members of congress, dont you think everybody wants to end suffering, on some level . Caller no. I disagree with that. This is the dialogue right now. It is nervous and scary but that is how you start this. The way. Sgender, by so you have people who react to that. They say, i will show you how angry i am. And i understand that. But i am suffering and you are suffering. You are suffering with the belief that you are threatened. But that is the dialogue that is being excluded from the media and talk shows and all of this stuff. Even on your show. There is no interest other than theioning to people that dialogue, at some point in evolution, has to happen. With all due respect to the crimes,in all of the including the other side, we have too much fun with it. Host how do you get somebody to start that conversation . How do you engage somebody . Caller i am not an articulate person but there are people like leaders, who have, it devoted their lives to that. But no one goes to them. So now maybe it is an opportunistic way, sadly, for people to hopefully consider do we keep having fun by, like, supporting my views on gun control, or whatever, im having too much fun with that. Meanwhile, people are suffering and dying. Somebodythe dalai lama who is having the conversation . Caller that is exactly right. Then you get religious. Us. Is not one of and talkedy, about that and how to talk across religions yesterday, when he was at the institute for peace in washington, d. C. And we covered that event. If viewers want to watch the entire event, they could go to cspan. Org. He had some of become a station that you are talking about, about how to cross religious lines and that we are all humans. That we cant go to two different planets. We all live on the same planets. I would invite viewers to watch that on cspan. Org. I didnt want to cut you off. Caller no, thank you. I did see part of that and he was advocating action and not prayer, which i loved. Because prayer doesnt get it done. You can use that as an excuse not to act. So yes, thank you for sharing that and reminding that. I want to see more of that. Thank you. To point our viewers to the list of the victims that is in usa today. Several of the papers are doing stories about the lives of those people who were lost in that attack at the pulse nightclub in orlando, florida. On sunday. Killed they ranged in age from 18 years old up to 50 years old. We are showing you all of the names there now. Several people along with that, they have pictures and biographies of those who lost their lives in that attack. Floyd has been waiting, thank you. Caller thank you for taking my call. Whated to call and it is. Something in common. Gun free zones. The need to do away with gun free zones. If someone had a gun, they could take him out. That christianity is wrong the idea is not to hurt anyone, that is what our job is. Another thing is that democrats call in and complain. Are 50,000,00060,000,000 babies killed in america because of abortion but they keep voting for people who support that and that is murder. I appreciate you taking my call. Be the lastwill caller in this segment. We will begin talking about these topics through the entire show but, we are joined by Eric Swalwell, a Ranking Member on the committee with cia. We will discuss that with congressman scott perry, he will be joining us later around 8 30. We will turn to the chairman of the senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Ron Johnson joins us by phone. Thank you for taking the time this morning. I want to talk to about what you have been able to learn about the shooter and connecting to overseas terrorism. Can you bring us up to the latest . Aware of anyot evidence that he actually try to connect with terrorist groups. Reportsding the news and it seems that it is relatively clear that he was aware of isis and his actions were inspired by isis. He called in during the attack to pledge allegiance to isis. That is an example of what authorities are working on right now. But the investigation is still in the early phases. Trovel have a treasure from his personal computers and Electronic Devices that he had and then we can try to assemble exactly what motivated him. We also need to combine that learn from the fort hood texas massacre, San Bernardino. The masonic temple in wisconsin. Finding where we have commonalities and what we can do to prevent these things happening in the future. I really do think that the most important thing we can do is engagement in muslim communities. Anything we can do to help any immigrant population assimilate and become part of the population is the best way to prevent alienation. Host the last part of what you said seems to be a little bit of a different tactic then donald speechesterday in his and the hardline he was looking to take on immigration and immigrants and how he spoke about muslim communities. What is your take on his thoughts yesterday . Guest i am responsible for my own thoughts and ideas and words. We have been exploring this for quite some time. We have held numerous hearings on different aspects of security and also, this is an incredible conduct problem. All for fully vetting refugees and having immigration policies. But for people who are already in this country, legally, we are a nation of immigrants. Wheree a history immigrants have come to this country, wanting to become part of america. Seeking out opportunities and excepting our policies. Not leaving their hurt just behind but excepting our culture. Could your bidding to our society. That is what makes us strong. To encourage that assimilation. Again, positive outreach in muslim communities. I remember a briefing we had with fbi agents where we did the positive engagement and the fact of the matter is that the leaders of the communities think we have perfect information and we know exactly which may be self radicalizing and we can sweep in and prevent that but nothing could be further from the truth. Theh is why you hear department of Homeland Security say, if you can see something, say something. We need a free flow of information between peaceloving muslims and those living here in canica, so that they provide information to the authorities of anyone in their communities. That would be in any american community. If you see something, say something. Host is that effort that you talked about the in consultative when donald Something Like what he said yesterday. That muslims have to work with us. They know what is going on. He knew the orlando shoot was bad. They didnt turn them in and we had death and distraction. That was reported by the Washington Post. Personally, i think it is too early in the investigation to say what members of the Community New board did not know. I think this is radical islamic terror. It is a problem. It is the root cause. And throughout the world there are for too many adherents to it. My own faith is lutheran and we had a reformation. I think it is down to muslims to police themselves. To make sure that the self not occur. Ion does and for them to work with american authorities to make sure tragedies dont happen in the future. Host we talked about the briefing that is happening at 3 00 p. M. I dont how much you can say about what you are expecting to hear but can you talk about what questions you will be entering the briefing with . Guest the same once you are asking now. Were there other two bus in the committee . We have all kinds of questions on our minds. That is ron johnson. Thank you so much for your time. We now turn to congressman Eric Swalwell. He is the top democrat on the Intelligence Panel subcommittee with the Central Intelligence agency. Explain what the cias role is in the investigation into this attack that happened on sunday . Guest thank you for having me on for the first time. Are grieving for the dead, especially during lgbt pride month. These people were targeted for they were. We are grateful for the Law Enforcement who stormed into that building and took out the terrorist. Right now, we were briefed last night on the Intelligence Committee and we will be briefed again today in the meeting. First question asked who is this individual . Is he self radicalized . Directed attack . Those are key questions. We will be looking at foreign travel the individual may have had. He devastated in the community. And the next question is, what was missed . We had people who observed disturbing behavior and there were innocent explanations for it. But that is a big problem. And as lawmakers, we have a understand howto someone who was on a terror watchlist was able to buy a fire arm. Effortsthat with some in the house, we could have legislation that says, if you were ever on a terror watchlist or you are currently only watchlist, you should not be able to get a gun. If you were on a terror watchlist before, should we have a process where the fbi is notified where if they go and buy a gun a year later . Does one get on the watchlist . How does that process work . Case, disturbing comments were made by this individual. And the fbi has a responsibility to go and track that person down. Interview that person and follow the lead. Country will the express a desire to kill americans or do something extreme and they fbi has to chase these individuals. Is not thest listing same as proving somewhat guilty in a court of law. And for good reason. We are not restricting their liberties or putting them in jail but we are saying, we need to watch or they travel. Off theperson came watchlist, it sounds like, a couple of years ago. And then they were able to buy a firearm. And no one was notified. Is the line where someone ends up on a watchlist and what is the line when they are taken off . Is it clearly defined . Guest there are a number of different factors. A common situation would be someone who exhibits disturbing behavior and other factors. What they are doing, who they communicate with. That could put someone on a watchlist. Standard. Ot a this is different. It is just a heightened alert to where they are. To eric are talking swalwell, a democrat from california. He is on the panel and subcommittee of the cia. Call in with your questions and comments. Republicans at 202 7488001, democrats at 202 7488000 and independent callers at 202 7488002. I know that you were recently in pakistan. And you talked with the pakistani version of the fbi. Were there suggestions that you learned their about how best to deal with domestic terrorism, the lone wolf attacks . They are a country we have to work with to make sure they are doing all they can to fight terrorism in their country. Right now, i dont believe theyre doing enough. We offer support wherever we can provide it. It has been going on for 10 years. We have seen the leader of al thea, Osama Bin Laden and leader of the taliban killed so certainly, that will inspire more cooperation because those strikes were carried out by the United States. I have a large Pakistani American Community in my district. A are proud of their heritage and they are concerned about the lack of Economic Activity in pakistan and the close government. There wanting to find ways to communicate with the pakistanis because we share values. Forefront, they have a number of terrorist groups in their country. The taliban. Al qaeda. , the taliban in pakistan. So we do share a concern. Themght them there, take off the battleground there. Keep them from killing innocent pakistanis. Eric swalwell is with us. He is in his second term representing californias 15th district. First, west virginia. Steve, good morning. Caller good morning. Ofas thinking that because free speech rights and gun rights, some people are allowed to buy a gun even though they are suspected by Law Enforcement as being unstable or dangerous or or whatever. This man was checked out a few and they could not legally stop him from buying a gun but maybe there should be a twotiered system that would flag that person to Law Enforcement and they could keep a closer watch on it if he buys guns, observe them or Something Like that. I would like to say about someone who pulls this off, he frequented that club. I think he may have had gate tendencies because it takes a sick coward to shoot unarmed people who have never harmed a person. That has come out about the attackers background. A lot more information to learn in the days and weeks to come. Thanks for the question. Right now, we are in the process ,f learning as much as we can but what we do know i think should horrify all of us. He bought the weapon legally. Havee point, right now, we limited capacity to know whos buying a firearm and what type of capacity we are buying. We have individual demonstrating disturbing behavior. Under what i think House Democrats are considering, from the nofly know by legislation, i think we should also consider a way that if you have come off is watchlist, the fbi notified if you buy a firearm. They could look at that and stop the person in this case. What motivatedow him. He expressed allegiance to isil and he had problems with seeing two men kissing. We may never take it all out of heart but there is more we can do in congress to keep weapons of war out of evil. Host mary is waiting. You are on. Caller thank you for taking my call. You mentioned earlier about being self radicalized. Is a choice byat the individual or was he forced into this or funded by someone . Is this a form of Mental Illness . Guest that is what Law Enforcement is looking at. A member of isil, a member of , or was he searching on or own, on the internet around the community for a way to carry out the attack . That is the hardest thing to prevent we saw it in San Bernardino. Withw that in chattanooga a marine killed at a marine recruiting center. That is the hardest attack to prevent cared what House Democrats are saying is as long as we have laws in the country that make it easier for people who become self radicalized to obtain the most dangerous pons, host susan, good morning. Because im calling have frustrated with congress that does not pass common sense gun laws. I would like to ask anyone out congressmanl their and demand they passed gun laws. Can you give us examples of common sense gun laws . Should notabuser have a gun. This man was an abuser. He abused his first wife. He would not have been allowed to buy a gun. The background check, shoring up shows so people who go in that fire a gun without a background check. One, like people who were investigated and the other if they are on a watchlist, they should not buy a gun. Also, why cant we have some kind of machine or i dont know that we counter the idea this is truly a muslim problem . Isis is a terrorist group. Republicans are bent on calling them islamic. I can see why the president would not want to say that. Have muslims in the country and youre only demonizing the good with the bad when you say that. These are murderers, these are terrorists, and you are giving whensome kind of respect you call them islamic. It is frustrating when you see mass shooting after mass shooting and you feel so powerless in a place of power. Since sandy hook, congress has to address firearm deaths in this country. I would like to see more republicans join us on the idea of nofly, no buy. If you are on a terrorist watch list, you are not able to buy a firearm. Universal background checks across the country saying if you are mentally unstable, you do not have access to a firearm. Support anats i was aweapons 10, prosecutor for seven years. An assault weaponss bullets fly twice as fast as a regular semiautomatic assault. They fly so fast and the Sheer Velocity when it hits the victim gives the victim no chance. Because it came from an ar15 and if was a vast, the victim had no chance and died. Host were you listing those in order of what is most likely to happen . The easiest to pass is if you on a terrorist watch list, if we do not let you want a plane, why would we give you access to a firearm . It is bipartisan. Opportunity toan show we will do something about this. Host mike is waiting, independent. Caller thank you p or i enjoy your show and your speakers. Wanted to basically go through the evolution of vices and how they came about. The first step on that was when andck obama went to egypt basically set how bad we are. I think everyoness mouth dropped open. This was basically the beginning of the isis problem. Then we went to libya. Then he put the red marker in syria and did not back it up. Then when isis became a problem, syria, he saidn they are the junior varsity, do not worry about them. They will not do anything. I think that probably infuriated them more and now we have got a problem. As far as assault weapons, we have had them hundreds of years. Now they have become a problem because radicals are getting a hold of them and using them. Ift would not have happened obama had come in as a strong leader. Leader to stand up and say, america is great, we will do something about this, and i think that is what we need. Mike in colorado, on his history of the evolution of vices . Ask Osama Bin Laden if you think barack obama is a strong leader. Ask the leader of the taliban and who was killed a couple of weeks ago whether he thinks barack obama is a strong leader. Barack obama is not the genesis of isis. This was suggested by donald , who said perhaps president obama knows more about isis that he leads on, suggesting he is part of the group. It is disgusting rhetoric. It is not true. Since the United States left iraq, because the iraqis would not sign a bilateral Security Agreement ensuring the safety of our troops, isis was able to grow and expand in iraq and now syria. Inspiring the United States, continuing to pound and disrupt them and make sure our middle east partners on the ground it in the air to do that. John is waiting, a republican. I have a couple of comments about gun control. It seems like with a tragedy that happened like this, everything goes right to the guns. Agendas like a common being pushed. You are not looking at the problem. The problem is not the guns. There are millions and millions of guns in the United States owned legally and handled responsibly. Oris the few who are sick extremist, that they could get these guns legally or illegally, and they will commit the crimes regardless. You keep going down the path and everyone says stricter gun laws. If everyone knew what the gun laws in place work, then the background checks be performed are, you would find a lot of laws are in place. Secondly, one of things mentioned earlier by a previous caller, a generalized statement where the one caller was grouping anyone who has a disagreement or a difference of ornion with an extremist highly likely to become a terrorist. This falls into a watchlist you are referring to. There are no rules as to how you get on the watchlist or any protections in place as to whether you are on and off the list. Senator ted kennedy was on the list. Guest we can keep the American People safe without rounding up and taking everyones guns. Lawabiding individual, you should be a will to keep your gun and protect your home. What the American People are asking is seven out of 10 of the greatest Mass Shootings in the country involved a an assault weapon. They not taking weapons of or off the street . The Second Amendment used as a shield to protect a terrorist ability to carry out an attack . The caller is making the same point. Radical terrorists are not deterred by guncontrol laws. Attack, the gun did not stop the two attacks in paris with fully automatic rifles and grenades. Will never prevent every gun violence death in america but just as we did, we have made it safer and safer over the last 100 years with automobiles. We can do more to reduce gun violence deaths. Host you mentioned deadliest Mass Shootings in the United States. Here is a chart from the washington times. To around 49vised with 53 injured. Connecticut, 27 killed in that shooting. California, 14 killed in that attack. Nancy is waiting in washington, d. C. Caller an attack sponsored by the criminal element we will hold off on conspiracy there is. Richard, illinois, line for democrats. I wanted to make a [indiscernible] you are going in and out. Guest the media rightfully focused on Mass Shootings we had but since sandy hook, we have had newly 1000 Mass Shootings terrorizing our communities. It is not always dozens of people who are killed. Many times it is 1, 2, 3 People Killed, and a couple of people injured. It is happening across america. Until we take the most dangerous weapons out of the most dangerous hands, background checks to a more to help people with Mental Health issues, we will see every neighborhood in america affected by gun violence. Host on twitter guest i think it is ludicrous to suggest you have to be 100 perfect to carry out a nofly know by policy. Strive to scrub anyone from that list but to say senator kennedy was on the list so we should not use the list to set to stop people from buying firearms, i think that is ludicrous. Caller i have got a couple of points out like to make. Looking at Hillary Clintons comments, she said we need to make a lone wolf terrorists the number one target. They are not already the number one target, what is . What is above a terrorist target right now in the fbis eyes . Wanted tocomment i make was i have no retired major. You want to get rid of the idiots with semiautomatic rifles. The reason we do not have machine Guns Everywhere in our neighborhood is one heck of a license fee to own one. Why not make it a 2000 license rifle own a semiautomatic . Anything that is not bold acting, or a semiautomatic . Istal pistol why not do a complete background check for about 30 days . Neither one of those two weapons are of any use on a target range , nor are they any use for hunting. Thank you for your service as a sergeant major. Lone wolves have to be our major priority. I believe they are, but finding them is the challenge. Stop the hardest target to. It is a twopronged approach. We have to defeat isis in syria and iraq. Take away the safe harbor, the ability to push out and inspire lone wolf. Then you have to find a lone wolves in the less success in iraq and syria, we get more success here in the United States. I agree we have to draw a line. I think the weapons of war on our street are too dangerous and are too often falling into evil hands. Will he is waiting, a democrat. Caller i am a to tom two time via nonveteran. Nowhere in the world would we have a young soldier Walking Around in the jungle with a 45 distal. I have got a pistol and an assault left in. We need to band the assault weapons, i am serious. Host until they are banned, are you saying we should allow lawabiding individuals to have the so they have the ability to fight back on the cool plane . Caller you think about in the 1950s, before assault weapons, you did not have People Killed like this. Im willing to turn my mine in. Ban them all. I think the American People overall agree that you can protect yourself but there have to be less. The way to protect ourselves from assault weapons and not allow more assault weapons, we should at least reinstate the assault weapons ban. Host joseph, good morning. Every to the years, they gowo through a process with a have a test. A commercial license or a business license or a state license, you have to go through examination. Rs and i think that should be done to every assault owner in the. Ountry guest there is a test on the right hand rather than putting on the shoulders. That is easier for a mass shooting. Magazine, emovable that would allow you in a very quick manner to get bullets flying everywhere. Those are common features that are restricted. It is the features on the guns themselves and not necessarily the base weapon . I ask because there is a six inr now being reported some outlets as the weapon being used in this. We talk about ar15s. To understand, is there going to be a list of guns . Guest we decide the features on the guns that allow you to very reduce it to simple terms. Host louisiana, a democrat, good morning. Caller good morning. I have a comment. Why do we need these Assault Rifles and what are they really used for . I think considering republicans and democrats, we need to Work Together with things like this instead of blaming each other for what is going on. We are all different people in the United States. This is a free country. No one should real to tone of the person they cannot come to the united is. I would like to know what are the uses for the Assault Rifles . What waswant to focus measured at the end about who can come to the United States. Yesterday, candidate trump was saying a muslim would have saved those souls in orlando this was an americanborn citizen not too far away from where donald trump was born. The idea that you can than an entire religion of over one billion people to make a safe is crazy. The American People do not want to see a divisive candidate. Radical interpretations of islam inspire people to have violence like this. Are carrying the sound and a name of islam or toe other radical religion, just target an entire population is not who we are as americans and that has never been rewarded in history. Florida where jerry is waiting, line for republicans, go ahead. Caller i am calling talking about the nofly list. You would be banning people with based solely on suspicion. What Constitutional Rights would you take away . The Fourth Amendment . All based on suspicion. Process. It seems unconstitutional. You see it you talk about gun availability, you could buy a gun without a background check whatsoever and by a magazine advertisement and have it delivered to your door but we do not have the same volume of Mass Shootings so it is not necessarily gun availability. Guns were easier to buy decades ago. I think it is a change in our society. Guest the point of why would we want someone on a nofly list not convicted in a court and not be able to buy a weapon. This is putting limitations on who can buy weapons. It is not prohibiting all americans from by weapons. It is saying if you are being investigated because of your beliefs or your behavior, we do not want you to have a weapon. If you are notified you are not able to buy the weapon, there should be a process for you to appeal that. Everyonenk to protect in the Community Around you, we should at least have a timeout and not put a weapon in that persons hand. Host congress had this debate last year in december in the that would amendment block suspected terrorists from buying guns and explosives. , this procedural rules same bill is being reintroduced. That is right. Also, a republican has a bill in the house. Cutler, new hampshire, independent. Good morning. Thank you for taking my call. We are discussing terrorism here. Has set me for serious about this, i think Congress Needs to declare a war. We have not done so. Conflict ands a korea was a conflict, yada yada. , it showsserious the country is united. The other thing i have a concern with is we recently had a funeral of mohammed ali and he had like 13 people up there heferent religions and truly was a man of peace and then this happens. Is i heard a muslim againsty speaking out this type of activity, but i really do not see much action from the Muslim Community in the way of action. We talk, talk, talk. The problem is not guns. It is the people who use them. The guns themselves to nothing. We have Mental Illness problems. We have guys with ptsd, and we. Ave a bunch of angry americans one of your previous callers mentioned road rage. People drive like they own the road and get out of my way. Host a lot there. I want to focus on the part of his comments on reactions to the Muslim Community. You mentioned you had a large muslim contingency in your district of california. Can you talk about reaction back home . We are proud of our indianamerican area just muslim area. San bernardino and now would we have seen in orlando, i have been moved by the Muslim Community coming forward and saying, that is not us and that is novel we believe to went with visual on sunday evening at my Congressional District and saw gay and lesbian families, christian families, standing together, and juice families, standing together and saying, we lowest put love over faith. The afghani ambassador to the United States was at the Hudson Institute talking about the shooting in orlando. Let me begin by offering my and seer condolences to the American People. To the families of the victims, the community in florida, and the community. We condemn this act of terror and hate in the strongest terms. Terrorists only have one goal, the use of violence to divide people. Ands time to stand united in solidarity against terrorism. Of the people who have suffered from terrorism for many years and continue to be one of the most frequent victims of terrorist attacks, we share the dreams of American People. Comes during the month of ramadan, a month of compassion and generosity. A month that increases our understanding of the difficulties of those who are less fortunate than us. Encourages us to reevaluate our behavior, to be compassionate and generous. If you want to watch the entire speech, you can see that on our website, it is cspan. Org. Time for a few more calls from california. Has been waiting in texas. Caller can you hear me . Host yes, go ahead. Caller i would like to say before my question to congress that it is nice to see an ambassador speak to the u. S. In solidarity and that someone from taliban. Is, president obama has described the terrorist acts as something that is fringe, something that is representative of islam such as beheadings and assaults against women and so forth. Was, if the if hean agrees does, what does he make of those all thehaviors time in countries like saudi where thed iraq, attacks are institutionalized. Guest these are acts of terror, whether it is somebody carrying it out in a an interpretation of islam in orlando or a 20yearold kid from indiana who has three assault weapons and is arrested the same morning in los angeles. It is an act of terror. Want us ton people take the most dangerous weapons out of the hands of the most interest people. Talk about what is going on abroad. The United States is the leader the world looks to. Those who are not on thes Intelligence Committee to go to 11 countries in the middle east, including iraq and afghanistan. Everything we can to work with them and create an environment where they have political and economic ability. The second we walk away and allow extremism to spread over there, it is coming back. The question was not necessarily about extremism, but when it is in the law, we showed a chart earlier about the countries in the middle east that have the Death Penalty for homosexuality as part of sharia law. Pakistan is one of those countries listed there as having. Hat you were just impact them to what do you say to those folks . Do not think they reflect the values of every person in those countries. Through the aid and support we give, i think we can ask the countries to change the laws and understand that is not how we work in the United States. We are a people of love. I retired from special forces. The terminology is wrong. Is no such thing as an assault weapon on american streets. The items have to be a fully automatic firearm. These are used by local neighborhood watch, stop looting used in los angeles years ago during the los angeles riots. They were used in ferguson by state militia and local citizen protect shoplp owners. The same thing happened in new orleans and during katrina, hurricanes. The most popular sporting weapon in the United States. These people have no idea what they are talking about when they say assault weapons. Host a chance to respond. Butt thank you for serving we have ended it a different interpretation of assault weapons and i believe a weapon that has a removal magazine that all its can fly nearly twice as fast as many pistols, those are dangerous weapons. They are now getting in the hands of terrorists. Unless were willing to take the most dangerous weapons out of the hands of the most dangerous people, we will continue to see Mass Shootings in america. Host we patient your time. Come back again. Up next, we will continue this conversation and be joined by congressman scott perry, a republican of pennsylvania. That is coming up in just a minute. Are going public. We will be watched by our friends and people outside the country. The senate maye, change, not as an institution, but it may become a more efficient body because of televised proceedings. The proceedings of the United States senate are being broadcast to the nation on television for the first time. Not that we have operated in secret until now. Millions of americans have sat in the galleries and observed Senate Debates during their visits to washington. Today, they can witness the proceedings in their own homes. A kind of a stage, the senators have been acting on that stage. The audience is in the gallery. Really fundamentally changed it. We have just included all of the American People we wish to watch. Commemorating 30 years in the u. S. Senate on cspan two. Washington journal continues. Host congressman scott perry joins us now, and Army National guard general, veteran of combat missions in iraq. I appreciate you being here. Your statement yesterday about terror attacks, he said this is not about gun control or Mental Health. It is about terrorism. Where is the best place to stop terrorism . The lone wolves or going after the inspiration and isis leaders and other terrorist groups overseas . Guest the quick answer is yes. Lone wolf, we have seen more. Han one, a recurring instance ideology is a part of it. The instrument is the instrument and we will not and pressure cookies because the brothers used them in boston. Night is used at the bus stop and we have to get to the larger issue, terrorism, radicalization, and what the motivation is for these attacks against innocent people. Approach, theic ideology that tries them. Maybe some individuals have Mental Health issues. A lot of people in america do and they do not go out and shoot people. We need to focus on where the issue is before we solve the problem the problem. Host online, the inspiration, where they engage in iraq and syria, time to declare war on isis, congress has not done that yet. Guest i drafted authorization for the use of military force, which updates and invokes the previous two. I have been shopping those around. What it says is it declares who the enemy is. We need to get to the islamist in the 9 11lineated report. You cannot fight or defeat the enemy unless you can define the enemy and identify the enemy. Host what restrictions does that put on the use of any . Guest make a determination about what is necessary. Groundou push for more troops. Is that something that needs to happen or are you confident in the Iraqi Government and our allies in the region and what they are doing . Of thei do not have all information and i am not sure. I do not think it is appropriate for congress to say we need more Ground Troops without an update on what the plan is and what the capability is of the forces on the ground and what their motivation is. People complain about the money we spent training iraqi forces. As we said we spent all of the money. A amount of training gets person to the point theyre willing to lay down their life for a country or their fellow combatant, fellow man or woman. That is all part of the mix and used to determine what is the appropriate level of force and who is doing the fighting. Put outnald trump several proposals yesterday that prevent domestic terrorism, wants to suspend immigration from countries with a proven history. Applicants and believes expanding u. S. Intelligence and Law Enforcement and military capabilities and rejecting calls for gun control are just some of the issues he laid out yesterday. Do you agree with all of them . Would referand i specifically to jeh johnson and the fbi director mr. Akoni. Vetting of the individuals we are bringing in, the refugees. Opinion, it is the officials doing the vetting and saying, we cannot vet the my point of thinking preliminarily is is if if this is a fire, why are we pouring gasoline on it . Why are we bringing in easily radicalized individuals into the country . How does that help the situation . Host the phone lines are open. Host rodney is in easton, republican. Good morning. Thank you. My question is about ideology. They say isis has an ideology. To fight an ideology, we need one of our own. But weeligion has that, are a religiously diverse country, thanks be to god. How do we fight ideology with ideology and what is the ideology we should use . Is wely proposal i heard must treat isis like we treat the nazis in the last world war. Thank you. I think it is different in the Current Situation that it wasnt with the nazis. The knots is when a religiously affiliated ideology. I would say we need to start with a leadership in the Muslim Islamist with radical extremism or some people called it fundamentalism. They take the koran literally. The folks that are most in danger and most in peril are those that do not practice a fundamentalist form. We need their leadership and that is where it starts with the Muslim Community that does not agree, that chooses this, that says, it is not appropriate and andprop for not proper to say if you are engaged in this and you are celebrating the deaths of these 49 people, go downng 9 11 through the list, that is a problem and we are not interested in that kind of promoting of our religion in that context host . Context. The concerned with rhetoric of donald trump, whether it would drive people further from working with us . That remains to be seen. Some folks are saying you are playing into their hand and so on. What is the alternative, to remain silent and hope they do not do it . There is a growing tendency toward saying this is not how we want our religion portrayed and it is growing and it needs to grow faster and more inclusive. Often when a greater muslim polled, whether it is sharia, suicide bombings in defense of islam and so on, the numbers are uncomfortably high. Those numbers need to come down where people involved in the faith maybe they are not involved in acts of terror themselves what they do not necessarily find themselves in. Florida, line for democrats. Bill is waiting period caller how are you . Waiting. Caller how are you . Background checks. In 1963, i just graduated college. I went to a gun shop in to buy a target pistol. I had to wait for three days, i had an investigation taken and it came back printed. There is nothing wrong with my background. Had clearance at work for president reagan. Nothing absolutely wrong with my background but that is how it was in birmingham in 1963. One more thing. Withsure you are familiar the fire back in the 1940s. People were killed and buried to get burned to death. A lot of laws were passed about that. I would like to know what happened down there. Poor people were trapped inside. As soon as i heard that, of course these are developing details, but as soon as i heard there was only one entrance and the shooter placed himself, terrorists place himself at the exit, i was immediately concerned hearing that other exits were locked. I was not sure that was something he orchestrated or the management of the facility. I do not think we have the answer to that. As far as background checks, i think america is familiar with them and generally supports and generally,ks free access to your constitutional right. What concerns me is there was a background check done on this individual, the terrace individuals background and things that alarm he did not seem to alarm them or at least not enough to do anything about it. You are cheering the 9 11 attacks and extolling some of ,he rings this individual did his affiliation online, his suicide bomber level himself up in syria, to me those are red flags. The fbi draft the ball in those investigations . Guest i wonder why it was decided there was not a background issue with this person. They took a hard look and followed him around and so on, at least that is what we think we know. Why did they come down on the side of this guy was ok even though he was not doing anything hard and tangible, he supported most types of alarms, americans would say that is not someone i want a federal security clearance, that type of thing. Good morning. I would like to ask you a question about terrorists. The kkk is the number one terrorist group in america. Me a bunch of wife beaters and rapists, and that is one of the reasons why he got out of the clan. Why arent you all concentrating killing oute minorities here in america that are not muslim . Why one and the other racial group like the black panthers, they wipe them out. The clan is alive and is still lives in america. What are you doing about them . I must reject the assertion it the number one terrorist organization. There might be killings associated with the claim that im unfamiliar with. In the 1960s and before that, this was spawned out of the democratic party, but in current modern times, we do not see any level of the violence, even though speeches are generally perceived as hateful and disagreeable to most americans including myself and we disavow categorically, but the activity is taken out. It is not illegal under the First Amendment, but taking action is. Host on the terror watch list not necessarily isis inspired, but like the kkk . Absolutely but again, you are on a watchlist. It does not mean you have taken action. Are there is no precrimes division of Law Enforcement that says you have thought these things so now we will arrest you. There has to be action taken. You might think horrible things but there is not much we can do. Opinions and my wife and i disagree on some things but nobodys going to jail because we disagree. Host changing from inspirational to aspirational. The attackers ability to carry out this attack. Very difficult for Law Enforcement to deal with that, which is why the signs leading up to it is so important that the question will be at some point, how do we do with that . Charles, an independent. Caller im a little concerned about the definition of an Assault Rifle. In vietnam in 1966 and 1967. I am familiar with Assault Rifles. Gentleman before you was talking about the definition of an assault rife and he was anding about handgrips other paraphernalia on the rifle. His definition is wrong. And a site Assault Rifle has a switch. An Assault Rifle can be semiautomatic or automatic, depending on which is which. About sois more talked the public knows exactly what an Assault Rifle is. Are you familiar with the m4 82 . Weapon and that does not have a pistol grip, it does not have any paraphernalia that they are ar15 has. All you do is grab the grip on the top, you hold it down, pull the trigger, and it is totally automatic. Assault rifles an and otherwise, it is simply a semiautomatic. Host on the definition . Guest i think it is important. In my mind, assault weapon vision symbolizes the look. People who are familiar with weapons and who have carried weapons, as a matter of our duty and that type of thing, we find it somewhat nonsensical. It is the capability of the weapon that i think should be addressed, not the look of the weapon. It can have the same capability as the weapon but it looks different so now it is characterized as an assault weapon. It does not get to the issue most people want to get to. It looks menacing so we do not like it. Passes, the clinton registration, did not really have any net affect. Empirically or otherwise in reducing crime. What does reduce crime is mandatory minimum federal like the pro that occurred in richmond. At least in virginia, there was a five year mandatory minimum for connecting a crime with a firearm. That had a resounding effect on criminals. They thought thought twice before they did that. That gets to crime in general. When you get to the ideology, it is difficult to counter that. When youre willing to martyr yourself and give up your life for your cause, using this weapon or any other weapon, a Pressure Cooker bomb or a suicide vest, it is hard to defeat that because you are willing to give up everything. Only those motivated by punishment will not use the weapon in the act of a crime. But i think it can be helpful. Randy is a republican to you are on. Caller good morning. I would like to make one comment. Your last guest said that overseas is what it is and we want to keep it away from the United States or that is what donald trump is trying to preach. Secondly, bedded by the fbi, i could be wrong on this, but correct me on this, if there was an act of war from congress, the fbi would have more powers to get farther into a person and check them out and keep a better eye on them. Number three, the news media would not make such a big ring out of this terrible shooting in orlando. It is bringing a terrible spotlight in orlando. We should not have this news media constantly badgering us. It is dividing the country on who is right and who is wrong. It should be done quietly by the fbi and Law Enforcement to get the people who are responsible for this and go after and punish anybody who had anything to do with this. Thank you, cspan. It is interesting and i somewhat agree in the fact that we are all mourning the loss of the people. It is her if and our hearts are broken. I do not know if the media is sensationalizing it. People want to know and it is the medias job to inform. This individual drove 120 miles, 90 minutes, to this location. I think it is also a narrative in america, lot that this form of islam, the radicalization, islamic extremists, fundamentalism, whatever you want to call it, are first to the gay community, and i think people may be needed to understand what we are dealing with. Want to hide that. The americans need to understand and be informed. They need to be informed about what is out there in the world and how other societies operate and without the media doing it, i hope randy does not think the media is downplaying a tragic loss. I do not get that sense. It is a tragic loss and it is her terrific. The job is to inform and we are trying to know. That is their job. Ont i want to play a moment the house floor yesterday and get your reaction. Without objection, the fiveminute voting will continue. The motion is the gem it from illinois. Suspend the rules and pass hr 5312 on amended order. The clerk will read the title of the bill. [indiscernible] standing eman stating our parliamentary inquiry. Thank you very much. I am really concerned that we have just that we could just today have a moment of silence and later this week, the 17th, speaker, i am particularly interested about three pieces of legislation that have been filed in response. Not feelingeman is a parliamentary inquiry. The bill to amend the highperformance act of 1991, the authorized activity for support of Networking Information Technology research. Committed. Is members will record their vote by electronic device. This is a fiveminute vote. Democrats trying to get speaker ryan to bring guncontrol legislation to the floor. You saw the scene there in the house. Our members of congress to quit to retreat to their political corners in light of this tragedy . We had a caller saying there was too much focus on the politics of this. Guest what is important is that we have to take a breath as policymakers that affect the lives of every americans edison and to rush to judgment that this is automatically about gun control, i think, is irresponsible. We dont know. Here is a Common Thread is it islam extremism or the use of a firearm or both . We want to hit the target. No pun intended. We want to make sure we get the best policy. To use the moment sensationally, i think, is from my standpoint irresponsible. Host you think that is what emma kratz did yesterday . Guest it was certainly inflammatory. Everybody knows the status of the bills. If the house wants to move the bills, the house will live the bills. That is already making the judgment without any of the facts that that is the issue here and for many americans, that is not the issue. I understand their circumstances. They want to move these bills but to use this occasion where these 49 people lost their lives and 53 others were injured and others are affected, to use that instance misses the mark to me. Host abdul is waiting, democrat. Guest thank you for cspan. First of all i would like to extend my sympathy to the family that lost over this tragic incident. I am a little disappointed in trying to make this political football especially with the argument of islam it is kind or muslims face. , but i dont think like a muslims it is lot of people have guns. That good people with guns youve got good people with guns. They do Something Like sandy hook, but that doesnt mean all gun owners are bad people. If a muslim goes something goes out and does something, that doesnt mean all muslims are bad people. You are breaking up a little bit but i think we got your point. Guest that is exactly right. Not everybody who owns a gun is using it for nefarious purposes and not every muslim is committing terror attacks. When we dont know who we are bringing into the country from wartorn areas that espouse and support terrorism, if you talk about iran, the greatest sponsor of terrorism around the world, and they are pouring troops into syria and some folks will infiltrate refugee populations, it is important that we know and from my perspective that is what i hear donald trump saying. If we dont, we need to just make sure. There is no reason to rush these folks in. Especially when we dont know who they are and what their intentions are. Inweve got a fire here extremism and these attacks across america, we see another one, maybe it is one person or two person or maybe it is 50, why would we pour gasoline on that fire by bringing more people with the same kind of feelings towards america . Why would we bring them in if we are not sure . We need to be sure of who we are bringing because we need to stand for america first. Our job is to defend our constitution. Come to no right to america. You have no right to a security clearance. Host paula is on outline for independents. On our line for independents. Guest i hope you will bear with me because i am going to bring up a couple of things that have not in disgust and i want to get right back to the basics of the seeds of terrorism. In your local elementary schools, if a child shows up with even the slightest you talked about the menacing appearance of the attack weapons but if a child shows up with a p shooter or a slingshot, they are thrown out of school. We dont even address that and what is going on today and what children are being exposed to and being allowed on our territory in our country. What is being taught and how they are being brainwashed. The other thing that i think is really serious is these violent video games. I think they think it is Just Entertainment but it is a lot more than entertainment because the weaponry and the fact that everyone is delighted when they wipe out all of the people on these videogames, that is one topic. The other topic i watched this ever since it happened in orlando two questions that nobody from the media has addressed at all and i have been waiting patiently for someone to address this, is why did the Orlando Police wait three hours to go in. Why did they wait from 2 30 to 5 32 going to take that violent person out . If he was being covered by the fouror two or three or different months of suspicious activities, why was this man allowed to keep a security job where he had a weapon . That was part of his job. And i a lot of questions kind of covered the one on the security background and my concern as well. Regarding the first responders, the time lapse between when they got the call and when they finally went in, i would hate to question them at this point. We know the question is going to be asked of how they made their decisions but most of us arent put in a position of making that decision. A very tough call. Going in may because as more loss of life, the police and the terrorist, and you have to make that calculation. I think we are going to get the answers. I want to address she is right to a certain extent in that i heard a young child was expelled because he made his pop gun. Into the shape of a i find that to be a bit absurd. If you juxtapose that with the fact that Law Enforcement, generally speaking, has been taken out of monitoring some of the mosques, and you look at the radicals speaking the mosques that this terrorist attended and you think has Law Enforcements hands tied . Could they have done a better job if they had been present their . It is good police work. If this is where the facts lead you that is where you must go whether writ is a mosque where the church or the school. I worry that political seems to have tied the hands of our Law Enforcement. How can we expect them to do a good job to prevent these things if they cant be present when the seeds are being sown. Host did you want to comment on the influence of video games . Guest i think there is its attachment of reality, i am certainly familiar and aware, and i think it is the goal to alliterative everybody on the other side. But in a realistic sense, those our lives that would be lost, and if people cant separate those two and understand the difference between the Virtual World and the real world, and i think we have seen some of that especially in sandy hook where that is seen as may be a precursor and at least a portion of that story. I think we need to be aware of that. Ron is on our line for democrats. Good morning. Caller sir, i am very much against what you are saying. I disagree with you. The Common Thread is the weapon. The weapon of choice is these large capacity bullet rifles that can be emptied in a matter of seconds. And their choice is because the power behind them. And taket go in there a shotgun up. Nearly everyone one of these huge, massive casualties, there are these weapons that you people that want to stand behind the nra and against common that almostontrol everybody else in the whole world understands but we refused to because one particular party is taking contributions, political contributions from that part of our society that wants guns in every house and every pocket and it is crazy. Host congressman . Guest it is one party taking contributions there are many people here that take the oath to uphold and defend the constitution, which includes the Second Amendment. Unlike every other country in the world, the Founding Fathers determined the Second Amendment was important because it was put in there as the Second Amendment. That having been said, i wonder if ron feels the same way about the individual in the home a in oklahoma that beheaded a woman with a knife, or the tsarnaev brothers with the Pressure Cooker bombs. The ideology is the common threat. Thread but a common the Common Thread is the ideology. Singleget rid of every gun in america and that hasnt gotten rid of the ideology. It wont bring back the woman in oklahoma who lost her head and it wont bring back the people in boston that lost their lives to the Pressure Cooker bombs so we can put our heads in the sand and say it is all about the instrument and disregard the ideology but once again, we are not going to get to the issue if we have that blinder. Host lets go to robin, good morning. Question. Ave a somebody has been investigated for terrorism, why are they taken off the list . Ands keep them on theere at least keep an eye out. He wouldnt have gotten those guns. I tend to think that the hands of Law Enforcement are tied in a different way. They cant go to where these things are emanating from, where the ideology is being preached. And even iflist this individual remained on the list, the fbi only has so many resources and how does that list translate to action . Being on the flow on the nofly list doesnt equate to you cant get a gun. Being on the watchlist comes with its own shortcomings. I think that giving the fbi that mightuthorities be garnered if we had a declaration of war or a different authorization in the use of military force would allow some latitude that they dont currently have but we certainly cant keep them out of the investigative process where we know these things are occurring. That is what we think of the fbis hands being tied. We will find out whether the fbi handed off this individual from their investigation to or state law and maybe there are things that can be tied up there. But those resources are limited as well. When you have an individual that is radicalized but has not taken action, the question for america is what do we do with that . What are the restrictions and what is the constitutionality of that restriction . The Supreme Court has weighed in on both sides on whether these are fighting words or not and whether this is inciting violence or not and i think we need to pursue that to greater depths in regard to islamist extremism and the rhetoric we are seeing out of the practitioners that go out and work on this. Host darrell is in the bronx, live from democrats that line for democrats. Caller thanks for taking my call. Explode without to all this. The congressman said earlier that he didnt want to jump to conclusions because we dont know the facts there in orlando and i agree with him. If we donton is, know the facts, how can we be so certain that this killer went in as an act of radical islam or radical terror . He only said that why he was committing the crime. It was simply a crime of hatred and you are trying to name him terrorism by calling him he called him 29 that he called into 911 before the investigation. This was an act of hatred, pure and simple against the gay community. The second thing is, on this ban , the facts prove that even when the ban was in place after president clinton, it didnt save lives. I dont understand. Of course it did. If it didnt save lives it wasnt a good ban. Vote to tax the no buy. , no by host the answer guest to be placed on the whole on the nofly list doesnt take a lot and there is no due process. Members of congress have had their names placed on the nofly list but when you show at the airport and your name is the same as someone who has been placed, you cant fly. There is no due process. How can you take someones rights away whether it is the First Amendment or any other right guaranteed . If we are willing to clean up the nofly list, when we are sure that whoever name is attached to that individual, then we can before that but without due process, how can you before that . Host the caller wanted facts on the assault weapons ban. I have the upshot column from the New York Times talking about gun homicides per day. If each country had the same population, the United States is by far the outlier. 27 people shot every day of the year. Has thewestern country rate of gun murders that the United States does. The chart also showing other wealthy countries well below five deaths per day. Counting Mass Shootings that make headlines in the thousands of americans killed, gunshot in 2014s total 8124 according to fbi data. In poland and egypt, one person per million dies each year. The infrequency that americans die in agricultural accidents. As americans chances are of being killed by a lightning strike. How do you explain that disparity . It doesnt show how much gun violence in particular has gone down in the last few decades and it has gone down dramatically in america. In these countries dont have a Second Amendment constitutional guaranteed right to own and protect yourself with a firearm. America is different for good reason. The Founding Fathers determined that it was important to have this right and we have to try and thread that needle, to find the balance between having firearms as a constitutional right and the violence that can be executed with those. That is what Congress Tries to do. It is imperfect but we are a free country because of all things that we have including e if we get rid of the Second Amendment, what is going to be next . Ive listen to people who espouse getting rid of the First Amendment as well. Host how would you get that number down . It is mandatory minimums with crimes committed with a gun. It worked when used but weve walked away from that in local and federal government. Weve walked away from the things that work which is discouraging the use of a firearm in commission of a crime. Host jack in louisiana, republican. Caller quick story. I gave my daughter a snubnosed 38 because she had moved to oklahoma and she had to drive to go to college, so her mother withd four kinds of heck me for doing that but when she got there on her trip back she said you are right, i am wrong. The wrong. She got scared. My daughter said dont worry, ive got my. 38. Guest in this case, his daughter didnt thwart the commission of a crime but she felt secure because she had protection with her. How goes underreported is many crimes are averted by the safe and legal use of firearms. Nobody wants to talk about that but it happens on a regular basis and sometimes has a sensational effect. A woman was in her closet while holding a gun, watching her children while some guy was ransacking and she wasnt sure what was going to happen and that i found her in the closet should theand said weapon at him. Who knows the tragedy that would have occurred. Why dont we ever talk about those things . Host scott perry is a republican from pennsylvania. The house is coming in at 10 00 so we will let you get back to work that we appreciate your time. Next on the washington journal, for our last 40 minutes or so, we will open our phones up to the question, how does the government prevent domestic terrorism. You can start calling in now. Lines are on screen for republicans, democrats, and independent. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] we proudly give 72 delegate votes to the next president of the United States. [applause] we are going public. We will be watched by our friends and by people across the , and i would hope, as i have said before, that the senate may change, not as an institution but maybe may become a more efficient body because of televised proceedings. The senateeedings of are being broadcast to the nation on television for the first time, not that we have operated in secrecy until now. Millions of americans have sat in the galleries and observed Senate Debates during their visits to washington. But today, they can witness the proceedings in their own homes. The senate floor has been kind of a stage. The senators have been acting on that stage. The audience is in the galleries. Today, we havent fundamentally altered that situation. We have simply enlarged the galleries. We have pushed out the wall to include all the American People. Commemorating 30 years of coverage of the u. S. Senate on cspan2. Washington journal continues. Host our phone lines are open. We are asking our viewers in the last 40 minutes how does the government prevent domestic terrorism . Members of Congress Getting ready to gavel in today at 10 00 at the house and the senate and and all member security briefing taking place at 3 00 p. M. Those members go about their work on capitol hill. Here are some headlines this morning. All focusing on that attack in florida. The Orange County register has the headline the fallen 49. They were students, professionals, athletes, parents, including one who graduated from high school last week, all of whom were lost in a burst of gun mans rage. Emerged monday, the outpouring grew and there were messages of support and shared memories of those who died. The pictures below that on the front page of the Orange County register of those 49 who died in that attack. Phone lines are open. You can call in this morning in this last segment. How does the government prevent domestic terrorism . First, ernestine is up first, indiana, democrat. Ifler i was wondering , more willse ar15s survive because people that use pistols that can fire off as quick, if they just had a pistol, the police need military armor and tanks because there are so many assault weapons out on the streets. They dont have i dont see how they have a choice to protect themselves from this. Thank you for taking my call. James is in myrtle beach, south carolina, a republican as we continue to show you those front pages. Go ahead. Caller good morning. Hasst want to say it been raised by many people, the point where you need to call this what it is and it just seems like this president administration, every time there is a terrorist attack whether it is benghazi or oklahoma or ft. Hood, orlando, or San Bernardino, they always find a way to try to call it something. But will call it terror they will always try to come up with something to say there is no direct evidence they perceived they received any orders from isis. But that is not true because they have told people, dont come to syria to carry out your deeds. Take your jihad to the west. Do your acts over there. It does a disservice to everyone. The democratsink are just a little hypocritical about these facts. Everybody knows the republicans fall in line and were in support of gun rights. We are provided our rights and it is not it is to defend our family and our homeland. If a criminal, who is going to find his weapon either way, if he has an ar15, i would like to have an ar15 myself. The last point i would like to make is the last point i would like to make is it just seems like everybody is ok with the right to freedom of assembly and things like this, yet we have people burning down cities, tearing of police cars that at taxpayers expense. Now people have been called to question the police on how long it took them to get inside this venue. Everything gets distorted so badly. If we would get rid of Political Correctness and fight this war and quit trying to take legal gun owners rights away from them, you know. One of those federal officials who will be at that 3 00 p. M. Briefing today is fbi director james comey. No evidence toas indicate the orlando mass shooter was directed i and outside terror organization, nor was he part of an international network. That is according to usa today. The deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History their work strong indications the shooter was radicalized over the internet before he launched his attack on the nightclub that left 49 victims dead and 53 wounded. He was the subject of an inquiry getting in may of 2014 after he made remarks at a courthouse where he worked. They reviewed his trips to saudi arabia in 2011 and 2012 which revealed no improper conduct. With we will be learning more in the coming days and weeks about the shooters background and the information that comes out we will continue to talk about it as we learn more. Christopher, independent, tallahassee. First, he made the suggestion about komi about how and how it wasnt directed by the terrorist. Im sure it was inspired by them. Ifcould maybe stop it governor rick scott calls a special session and we wrote a that if you come up twice some people give people three strikes. They lock you will a for a long time. ,m just a hardworking citizen but if you wrote a law that if you came up twice on the radar, then we would take the guns from you, because you dont get that opportunity. Maybe if you come up on the radar twice in five years, they give you some bit of leeway. Maybe that. Host christopher with his suggestions as we are talking about your thoughts on how the government can prevent mastic terrorism in the wake of the shooting at the pulse nightclub. Noel, dallas texas, you are up next. Caller thank you for taking my call. I think the way that we can stop these types of incidents is weve got to change the face of congress. Look at these men in congress. Theyve been there 30, 40, 50 years. Concept of modern america. , anyone, need an automatic assault weapon to defend their home . We are not in a war zone. Were not in israel or afghanistan. We do not need assault weapons to protect your home. But the nra has this whole country held hostage and until we change congress, break the power of the nra, start to realize this is a new era, nothing is going to change. We are just waiting for another tragedy. Host some members talking about renewed efforts when it comes to assault weapons. One of the other pushes that has happened since the sunday shooting, democrats in the house and senate renewing their push to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns and explosives and the socalled legislation. Y you can check it at cspan. Org. You can review and watch again. Charlotte is in delaware, a republican. In addition to being a republican, i am a former nra member and i spent 10 years married to a marine and i can speak firsthand to the fact that rational foray civilians to own military weapons. When we have callers say that if the bad guys have these kinds of weapons, they want to have those weapons to be on equal footing, what do you say . Caller i dont care if they are bad guys are good guys. Thated to have regulations will keep military weapons out of the hands of civilians. And whatever we have to do with policing to accomplish that, it is necessary. Host how do you define military weapon . Caller lets start with the ar15. Rapidfire guns when i was married to the marine, back in ,hose days, it was a the ar15 and intimidating weapon just to look at. The kinds of guns they have today are out of star wars. Roundsperson can fire 20 in a matter of seconds, they dont need to be on the street. They need to be in the hands of the military. Are you talking about automatic weapons as opposed to semiautomatic rifles that we are talking about here . One trigger, oneshot . Caller im talking about the gun that man had. He had a military weapon in his hands as he was killing people. Host the gun that he had, the reporting on that, originally ar15, a few an outlets reporting that it was actually a sixhour mc ask mcx. You can see a picture of that weapon from tj holmess twitter page. More details about this attack as more reporting happens as the Investigation Continues but that is some of the latest reporting out there. Susan is in virginia, an independent. How does the government prevent the mastic terrorism . Caller thank you for taking my call. I was going through some ideas ,n my head and i was thinking if the government, or whoever makes the laws could put 20 as the offense00 if they get caught with one of these fully automatic guns, i dont see where a regular person taking care of his home with a gun that is fine but they dont need an automatic weapon. Hat is for war i dont believe they should be allowed to have them. You should go back to the 20 years and 20,000. Host there are already very was very strict request restrictions on automatic weapons. This was a semi automatic weapon, a rifle that was used along with a handgun as well. Marcia in pittsburgh, line for democrats. Caller good morning. I would say the American Public as well as our president is fed up with the mra nra. It is obvious republicans are on the take when 80 of americans want national gun law. I would also say it is republicans who hold up funding for Mental Health issues. The media is not focusing on the fact that this guy was bipolar. Mental health once again, but i was not right mentally. There is no funding out there for Mental Health issues, ever since reagan. And the republicans just want to drop the issue. The president as appealed to the public, he has got public support, and is just blatantly honest efforts on obamas part and greed on the republican part. It couldnt be more clear that they are taking money from the nra and they refuse to pass Bipartisan Legislation that would have the support of the American Public. Host danny is in findlay, ohio, republican. You are on the washington journal. Sorry, got to hit the button. Caller i think the question is simple. Are we going to have liberty in this nation . Or are we going to have law . Under sharia law, they think they can kill people, murder people, all these people have something in common. They are doing it under their god. Their law says it is all right to murder homosexuals, to murder christians, that is what they believe. In galatians 51, it says stand fast and christ will set you free. We are founded on liberty. John adams said the general principles on which the fathers achieved independence with the general principles of christianity. Generale now that those principles are eternal and immutable as existence. And attributes of god. It is not our job to judge people. We might think things are wrong, the bible might say certain things are wrong but the only judge is going to be the king of kings. It is not up to us to judge. Aboutwe talked earlier proposals from the president ial candidate Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Iny laid out there positions response to the terrorist attacks and the threats of loan will terrorism. The Editorial Board of the wall street journal today talking about neither candidate rising to the Islamic State threat. The Editorial Board writes that donald trump, by his own admission, has been promoting a band for months, but beyond that where is he going . Clintons supporters whisper that she is a closet hock willing to do more than mr. Obama. She has left the policy that the impression that her policy would be obama 2. 0. The two president ial candidates sound like opponents in a College Debate trying to score rhetorical points. Since the Islamic State rose to power during the amaga presidency the obama presidency. The American People have five months to begin in a better idea than they have now. The full editorial is in the wall street journal today. Rex, north carolina, good morning. People talking about these bands dont know what they are talking about. They fire is time they pull the trigger, they are not fully automatic. You can do the same thing. Ith a shotgun with five shells i agree with donald trump. I believe we need some host i know you are talking there about the difference between automatic and semi automatic weapons. Jimmy is in akron ohio, line for democrats. Good morning. Caller good morning. I believe that the Second Amendment is highly important. It does not need to be abolished for far as as far as what . We will go to greg in huntsville, alabama, republican. Comment ast a quick pertaining to Homeland Security. It starts where we need to know who is in our country. The pc police are out in full force trying to allow anyone who wants to come here with open arms. I know we are built on the back of immigrants and there are a lot of hardworking, good immigrants in our country, legal and illegal that have come in. Where you have the northern Border Security director i believe he was from Niagara Falls and he was pouting touting obamas amnesty policy and i couldnt believe he actually had time with fractures in his job and people in our country illegally to have time to come and talk to cspan. He should have been trying to stop it from reaching 12 million. First we got to know who is here. Weve got to keep the people who want to do us harm and properly vet these people and keep them from doing harm. Secondly, someone mentioned we werent in a war zone. We are fast approaching being in a war zone. The more people we let in that want to do us harm, we are going to be in a war zone. Terrorism only works if you are afraid and i think americans actually get stronger as people attack us. I think we bond together, political differences go aside, host do you think that has happened in the past 48 hours . Americans never come together like they do when they are afraid. After 9 11, you saw bonding and solidarity amongst this country. It is like a family. You will fight with each other but you mess with one, you got us all. You wont attack us without bombing us together. As far as gun control, i dont have an opinion. I dont own a lot of weapons. My father did. He was a command sergeant major, he told us not to touch his guns. I never did harm to anybody and maybe we need better people, but at the same time, it is a deterrent for someone to put boots on the ground when youve got a unified country looking to bond together like the United States. Every home has a gun. It is tough to fight every home in america. Bybe we should start protecting those borders and doing a better job. Then take a look at where we failed. We are not fighting an enemy that is easy to fight. Greg in alabama. Weve shown you coverage of donald trump and Hillary Clinton , speeches yesterday about their plans for preventing domestic terrorism. Articles fromome the Washington Post the little earlier, but the Donald Trump Campaign is pulling the Washington Posts credentials to cover his event because he is upset with the newspapers coverage of him and his campaign. He puts the news paper on a long list of publishing outlets that he has banned. Based on the inaccurate coverage and reporting of the recordsetting from campaign, we are revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post. I am no fan of president obama but to show you how dishonest the Washington Post is, donald trump to tests president obama donald trump suggests president obama was involved in the orlando shooting. The original headline, with trump cited, was changed after an hour. The newspaper changed it before the Trump Campaigns complaint. The White House Correspondents Association put out a statement about the pulling of the credentials. That Statement Reads in part, both the corresponding associates edition trump. Tion stand against any nominees for the highest office in the country must respect the role of the free press, not disown the principles of the First Amendment just because he or she does not like the tone or content. That is the White House Correspondents Association. We will look for more from the Washington Post for the next couple of days as we continue. How does the government prevent domestic terrorism . We want to bring in senator tom carper, top democrat on the Governmental Affairs committee. Thanks so much for being here. We talked about this 3 00 p. M. Briefing with intelligence officials coming off the orlando shooting. What questions are you going to be bringing . Are my life and i were in new york city on saturday with our oldest son. We went to the 9 11 museum and memorial and i was reminded of what the spirit was like in this country in the days after 9 11. We had vigils on the capitol steps. Democrats and republicans united. The 9 11 commission was created, chaired by tom kane and a democrat from indiana. That commission created recommendations 40 they adopted unanimously of what we should do in response. Good hearings, substantive hearings. Joe lieberman and Susan Collins led the way. We adopted, within a year, the lions share of the recommendations. We got rid of stone piping within the watch lists. You guys have had to share information and created the office of directive intelligence. State and local governments could get information they needed and it would work the other day going up. Compare that to what is going on today and it is just a tragedy. People are trying to politicize this stuff. Weve got 50 people who are dead. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles and we are using this as an excuse to find political gain. Host i know you knew the late senator george point of its very well. Novic. Rge boy host he was a republican. Guest we need people like him on both sides especially right now. Host how do you think he would have reacted to what you are seeing right now in the wake of this shooting . Guest he would have said how can we drill down on this without hyperbole or looking for political advantage . How can we find out what went wrong . What do we need to do to fix it . On the heels of 9 11, is all of that working . The number of americans killed by jihadist terrorists, they have all been killed by people who were either born in this country, citizens, or legal residents. They are not people coming in here embedded in some kind of refugee operation. They are not coming in on a visa waiver. , what we areto do trying to do through the department of Homeland Security, is to create an outreach. We call it the partnership against violent extremism where we work with the Muslim Community, faith organizations, to say, you dont want to see your kids radicalized. Make sure that doesnt happen. The house briefing happening at 3 00 p. M. , the senate is happening having separate briefings, in these briefings, are you coming in with concerns about clear holes in the Homeland Security net . Is it something that is bigger than that . Is it gun laws . What are you going to be asking about . Inst im interested briefingst from those that did he ever end up on a watchlist . Did he stay on or go off . And to try to find out if we made the right decision. Make the right decision in taking him off of that watchlist . The other thing we want to do with respect to information sharing, i just want to make sure the folks in florida they have a Fusion Center down there to take state and local Law Enforcement and merge them with federal including the fbi to make sure that we are all talking to one another. I want to make sure that the information one agency had was being shared appropriately with other agencies. With respect to weapons, the guy was the guy from alabama on before i came on, i grew up in west virginia. And heis a big hunter taught me to hunt at a very early age. I got my grandfathers shotgun when he died. I was a no flight officer at the vietnam war. I would stay in a guest bedroom and under the bed that i was sleeping on were guns. Hunter butnot just a a guy who buys and sells guns and traded in handguns and rifles. Not automatic weapons or assault weapons, but he was a big believer in the Second Amendment and so my. But the idea that somebody on a terrorist watch list can walk into a gun store and buy an assault weapon is crazy. The idea that someone can walk into a gun show can buy automatic weapons from a licensed gun deal and be denied and go to the next table and by the same weapon, that is crazy. 95 of American People think that is crazy. Does 95 or more of the senate think that is crazy . Theou think you will have votes for this nofly, no buy legislation . Guest remember when gretzky . People asked why he was such a good hockey player. I go with a pup will be. He said i missed every shot i never took. We need to take this shot. Not literally but figuratively. This needs to be fixed. If we dont try, we will never get it done. Host the senate is gaveling in at 10 00. Thanks for joining us. A few minutes left in the washington journal. Before we take you live to the house floor at 10 00 a. M. This question weve been asking, how does the government prevent the message terrorism . Ynthia has been waiting jacksonville, line for independents. Caller i wish the senator was still on the line and hopefully hes listening. But we have some major institutions in the world, one is our Insurance Industry and one is the munitions industry. Why dont we turn them on each other and require that everybody that wants a gun must provide proof of insurance before they receive the weapon. Companies canance decide how much of a premium you pay depending on the kind of a weapon you buy. Can never regulate any individual weapons because they are always making new ones and improvising. We cant control who buys them but let me tell you. The Insurance Companies will never ensure someone who is unstable or that cant afford to pay for the kind of damage that these weapons can do. Let those industries fight it out together. Host albert in maryland, line for democrats. That morning. Good morning. Caller one thing i want to say thisat this definition and constant use of the term assultstyleon or weapon is not bringing any type of clarity to the debate. I am prior enlisted, and if you cant put the weapon on three round bursts, or if it is not fully automatic, it is not an assault weapon. Weit gets really tired and hear a lot of wellmeaning people throw that term around. I dont think nra members are getting their moneys worth because this is a simple talking point. When that guy shot up virginia tech, he had a semi automatic handgun. These folks keep completing this term and what you are going to have is they will have any type of semi automatic weapon as an assault weapon and subject to whatever ban they are trying to actually accomplish. I think the last caller had a very thoughtful idea also. Host here is Eugene Robinsons column today. His crack at the assault weapons, saying they must be banned. The framers were thinking about muskets and single shot pistols. He could not have foreseen modern rifles or highcapacity magazines. Imaginempossible to that one man barging into a crowded room and killing more than one or two people before having to reload and surely being subdued. It is tragically commonplace. Freedom is possible, however without the right to buy military weapons. It would mean fewer deaths. The blood of all future victims will be on our hands. The Washington Post and other outlets as well. Robert is in mississippi, a republican. Good morning. Caller yes. I got turned down on buying a gun about three months ago. Host why is that . Caller i dont know but i tried calling the fbi and all that and they dont answer their phones but i had to do they wanted my fingerprints. Apparently, they sent me a letter and said i was approved to buy a gun. What do you user gun four, protection or hunting . Caller i go to the shooting range appear and i have four shotguns andmerous probably 18 or 20 guns. I am a collector, a lot of them are world war ii guns. Host what do you say when people ask why do you need that many . Caller wyatt got the guns . Host yes sir. Caller i just collect the guns.
