The story notes that investigators face the question of how much the killings were the act of a deeply disturbed man and how much he was driven by religious or political ideology. Whatever drove him to carry out the shootings, his actions highlight the difficulty for the American Government in trying to address a new style of terrorism. Random acts of violence that they have been partly inspired by the Islamic State but were not directed by the group leaders. At the classified briefing happening today, members Briefing Members will be james comey, the director of homeland ofurity and the director national counterterrorism. He said he hoped that Law Enforcement would read his apartment and assault his wife and child so he could martyr himself. When this was reported to us, the florida fbi Office Opened an investigation. Over the next 10 months, we determined whether or not he was a terrorist threat. Our investigation involved introducing Confidential Sources to him, recording conversations ,ith him, following him reviewing transactional records from his communications and searching all Government Holdings for any possible connections or derogatory information. We interviewed him twice. He admitted making statements that his coworkers reported but explained he did it in anger, because he thought his coworkers were discriminating against him and teasing him because he was muslim. We closed thes, preliminary investigation. In july, 2014,r the killers name surfaced again in an indirect way. The miami office was investigating be florida man who , withimself up in syria the group in conflict with isil. We learned from the investigation that the killer new him casually from attending the same mosque in that area of florida. The investigation turned up no ties of any consequence. Course of that investigation, a witness told us , when wondering if you knew anybody else who might be radicalized that he once was buterned about the killer, the witness had concluded that he later got married and had a child and got a job as a security guard, and so he was no longer concerned about him. Our investigation again turned and interviewed the killer to find out whether he had significant contacts with the suicide, determined he did not and the great continued, focusing on the suicide bomber with no further focus on the orlando killer. We will continue to look forward and backward in this investigation. We will leave no stone unturned and we will work all day and all night to understand the path to that terrible night. We will look hard at our own work to see whether there is something we should have done differently. So far, the honest answer is, i dont think so. Anything in reviewing our work but our agents should have done to family but we will do this in an open and honest way and be transparent. And his tendency to be provocative about america, and i think they ought to have arrested him and maybe they could have prevented this tragedy. Is,i think the main point donald trump will be much tougher on terrorism than Hillary Clinton would be. I predict donald trump will be the president of the United States. We see little kids, there is no hatred. There is something that happens in our system that takes these mines and shift some. I think it is extremism. When i look at the hate groups in america, they are domestic terrorist groups. Before this issue of hate groups and hate crimes, that would have been a terrorist group. The lynchings and burnings and so forth. As a country, this needs to be addressed. The whole legal marriage issue. We have christian conservatives or radical groups that put out that there are certain people who are not entitled to the same rights as you and they contest that. Win, you havethey a group of people who are upset about that. And i think a lot of the things we have to address is the hate. Because the hate groups turn into terrorist groups. I am thinking the issue of domestic terrorism or crime or violence has to do with the idea of suffering. It is very idealistic, i know but there has never been the issue of ending suffering. Theses because you set up sides that are passionate and then you have the mechanism to build it into continuing so you never have the dialogue. People would just laugh at you because there is no effort to have the dialogue. There is something about the families. Go ahead. Host how do you start the dialogue . What is your take on his thoughts yesterday . Guest i am responsible for my own thoughts and ideas and words. We have been exploring this for quite some time. We have held numerous hearings on different aspects of security and also, this is an incredible conduct problem. All for fully vetting refugees and having immigration policies. But for people who are already in this country, legally, we are a nation of immigrants. Wheree a history immigrants have come to this country, wanting to become part of america. Seeking out opportunities and excepting our policies. Not leaving their hurt just behind but excepting our culture. Could your bidding to our society. That is what makes us strong. We went to the 9 11 museum and memorial and i was reminded of what the spirit was like in this country in the days after 9 11. We had vigils on the capitol steps. Democrats and republicans united. The 9 11 commission was created, chaired by tom kane and a democrat from indiana. That commission created recommendations 40 they adopted unanimously of what we should do in response. Good hearings, substantive hearings. Joe lieberman and Susan Collins led the way. We adopted, within a year, the lions share of the recommendations. We got rid of stone piping within the watch lists. You guys have had to share information and created the office of directive intelligence. State and local governments could get information they needed and it would work the other day going up. Compare that to what is going on today and it is just a tragedy. People are trying to politicize this stuff. Weve got 50 people who are dead. But the idea that somebody on a terrorist watch list can walk into a gun store and buy an assault weapon is crazy.
