His closest competitor was Keith Ellison who is asked to serve as deputy chair. Before the balloting process took place, all candidates had an opportunity to address members. We will show you that, followed by the victory speech from tom perez. Z. We are ready to move to the election of the new dnc chair. [applause] i have beene informed that nominating statements were filed pursuant to the rules for the following candidates. Ladies and gentlemen, take your seats. We have established in order. They were able to draw. Tom perez will go first. Followed by sally brown. Keith ellison. Each candidate has 10 minutes for speeches, which may be divided between no more than four people, excluding the candidates. I will ask staff to go ahead and bring for the candidates. How are you doing . Good to see you. Wonderful. Chair brazile tom perez will go first. Apple bomb will nominate him. Mayor Eric Garcetti will follow. And then jamie harrison. Chair brazile ok. Mr. Perez, secretary perez has changed the order, which the chair approves. I will restart the clock. Mayor garcetti will go first. [applause] mayor garcetti good morning democrats. I guess i should say good afternoon. Are we fired up . I we ready to win . Are we ready to govern . Are we ready to unite . I am here because i want to see a party that stands up for americans and we are the party. We are the party of opportunity. We are the party of success. And im here today as we are reminded of dr. Kings dreams who supported a dreamer named tom perez. Aetrium or his his entire life has stood up for the ideal that americans anywhere and everywhere can should have their godgiven rights to the fill their dreams. I have seen this man, when of the smartest people i have ever known. I have felt his heart in my city. When workers said they deserved the minimum wage, who did the president send, tom perez. We raised the minimum wage. And when the economy was losing 1 billion a day and dockworkers and one out of 50 workers who depend on their work were threatened, who did the white house send . Tom perez. I saw how he brought people together and i am grateful to my city and the American Economy for tom perez saving the u. S. Economy. Over timen him make count, i have seen him do it for communications workers, home care workers, i have seen him stand up for whitecollar jobs, and as a son of refugees, a powerful message at this time we are closing our borders and building walls. Let us break one down and elect tom perez as the next chair. He has got we need local support and he has been an elected local leader. As a mayor and all of you from local organizations know, we need somebody who has been a local leader, served as a state official, cabinet official, he has delivered what was seen as the biggest secondbiggest a compliment in years, overtime laws. He traveled the country long before the campaign started. Are we ready to win . Are we ready to unite . I we ready to stand up and stand tall . , hope you will stand with me elect the next chair, a great american, tom perez. Thank you so much. [applause] my fellow democrats. Anger is wasted emotion. We are all angry, but we must let that anger propalestine not paralyze us. I am in support of a candidate that will channel that anger into concrete action. Who will move us forward and to be the voice for all americans. I am in support of tom perez. Rightsez knows voting cannot be a catchphrase, but must be the cause of the dnc. Tom knows that Cyber Security means more than building a firewall around the dnc. It means expanding the security to all the states and territories. Because, if we are compromised in the field, we remain vulnerable. Tom knows that all election matters, and unless we work at the micro level, we have no right to complain when things go wrong at the macro levels. [applause] ms. Lewis that is why winning from school board to senate will be his cause. When you wrap this up in his outstanding experience managing and turning around a large bureaucracy, his work with the Civil Rights Division of the justice department, his steadfast progressive values, tom represents who we are and what we need at this critical time. He is the only candidate with the knowledge of the past respect for the present, and a , vision for the future. I urge you to join me in supporting tom perez for dnc chair. Thank you. [applause] good morning, democrats. It has been a tough few months for democrats. I will never forget feeling that pit in my stomach as i watched the returns on november 8. I will never forget the next morning when my twoyearold son asked if i was sad. Growing up in South Carolina i learned to never bend, never break, in the face of the challenge. I learned to live my states motto. While i breathe, i hope. At tomrison when i look perez, i see a fighter. Someone that gives me hope for our party and my sons future. Tom perez has spent so much time speaking out for the rights of every american, especially the most vulnerable. He spoke up for immigrants living in the shadows. He spoke up for civil rights, voting rights, at the department of justice. He stood up for working families at the department of labor. And tom perez will lead us as we stand up and speak up together as we unite this democratic , party for shared values of inclusion and opportunity. We will build our party in every single community, because the American People deserve Democratic Victory up and down the ballot so we can enact the progressive change our country so desperately needs. Democrats, with eyes fixed on the future, and hope in every breath, i am proud to nominate the man that will turn our party around and make history as its first latino chair. Everybody welcome my friend, tom perez. [applause] thank you, so much. Alright good morning. Good morning. Good morning, everyone. Mr. Perez thank you, jamie, yvette, eric, all my friends here. It is such a privilege to be with you here today among , family, among a great stable of candidates. I have Great Respect for all of them. We are one family and i know we will leave here united today, no doubt about that. I must tell you this is a humbling moment for me. Only in america can the son of immigrants and a pell grant kid who worked through college on the back of a trash truck , picking up a golf balls, should have used a helmet, to have the opportunity to make a difference at this scale under barack obama and others. Only in america and only in the Democratic Party. [applause] because you know , what . We are the party that turns hardship into hope, doubts into dreams, the party of inclusion and opportunity. And we make sure inclusion and opportunity is in every zip code for everyone. You know, 50 years ago dr. King gave a speech in atlanta where he asked a simple and critical question, where do we go from here . How do we fight for shared values, how do we continue our march for jobs and justice, how do we fill this nations promise for opportunity for everyone . The Democratic Party is asking that question, where do we go from here . Right now, we need to face the facts. We are suffering from a crisis of confidence and relevance. We need a chair that can take the fight to donald trump. Make sure that we talk about our positive message of inclusion and opportunity. And talk to the big ten of the Democratic Party. And we need a chair that can lead turnaround and changed the change the culture of the Democratic Party and dnc. Coulter change has a number of culture change has a number of dimensions. All of them are essential. We must redefine the roles that we are not simply electing the president , but electing from the school board to the senate in all of the states and territories from democrats, making sure we elect democrats. The way we do that is to build strong parties, organize, organize, organize. That is how we do that. But we also need a chair that can lead turnaround, change, and change it culturally at scale. The button says team tom. The most important word on that button is team. If elected, i promise you will all be a part of that team. I have learned that good leaders are great listeners. You will always have my ear and i will always have your back. Let me repeat that. You will always have my ear and i will always have your back. You will not let me repeat this, you will not be underutilized. You will have input in everything we do. The most important question you will hear from me is, what do you think . What should we be doing . We will plan strategy together. We will lift each other up together. We will plan the partys future together. We will take on donald trump and the far right republicans together. And we will elect democrats up and down the ballot. This is not the first time i have confronted the challenge of bringing people together. And i have the utmost respect for the challenge that lies ahead. And i have the utmost respect for the importance of a team. You know what, you cannot know you cannot go bowling alone and succeed. We must bowl together. That is what we will do as a party. We have a couple hours before we make this vote. And you know what, no matter who wins, i know that we will cross the finish line together. A united Democratic Party is our best hope, and Donald Trumps worst nightmare. And we will be there together with hope, hard work, and a hell of a lot of organizing. We will turn this party around and get democrats winning again. Thank you very much. I appreciate your help, and i look forward to your support. And i ask for your vote. [applause] [cheers] god bless you. Thank you. Thank you. Chair brazile ok, that concludes the nomination speeches for secretary perez. We will now move to speeches for Sally Boynton brown. The chair will now recognize Christine Pelosi for the nomination of miss brown. Recognizewill also after Christine Pelosi, josh abo shi for the purpose of second nomination. So miss brown and her team, if you dont mind, come to the stage. [applause] chair brazile i am keeping time, so if you see me, wave something. Go on this side please. Christine pelosi. Pelosi good morning. You might be asking yourself, what is an urban instigator like Christine Pelosi doing supporting a rural peacemaker like Sally Boynton brown for chair . Well i will tell you my colleagues, i think it is incredibly important for the future of our country that we have people like sally running our party, and running in our party as candidates. My little daughter thought she would grow up under a woman president. And though those dreams were dashed in november, i believe leadership of sally, we can have a party were where little girls like my bella will grow up knowing that anything is possible. Like sally said, they dont have to ask permission. They can step up, lead, and have the same opportunities the boys do. [applause] pelosi i believe in sally we have a facilitator, a harmonizer. I often say, let us not strive for unity. Because as you well know, that is a difficult concept for instigators like me. I believe in community and harmony. And over the last few months, sallys message as executive director, president of the executive directors association, as somebody running a rural party in a red state winning elections in nonpartisan races, sallys words of harmony ring true. And sally also was very consistent in talking about access to power. Access to power when it comes to our donations, when it comes to our participation. And when it comes to us, the dnc working for us. For my daughter, all of our daughters, and the possibility of what thisty party can be i nominate sally , Boynton Brown as chair for the Democratic National committee. [applause] good afternoon, democrats. I hail from the great state of north dakota. I am here to support and second the nomination of Sally Boynton brown because of the experience she brings to the table. She ran a state party and worked in rural red state. She spoke with independent voters every day. Boschee we know that Rural America has been left behind. Sally will be a voice for the women across the country and rural voters in the heartland of where agriculture is king, where coal and Energy Collide with water, where hunting rights and landowner rights are discussed every day. She will not leave us behind. She will not leave our state party behind. She has developed and shared her blueprint for the future. A bold plan which puts our partys future forward and our states future forward. And for that purpose i second , the nomination for Sally Boynton brown for dnc chair. [applause] ms. Brown hello, my fellow freedom fighters. I am so excited to be in this room. We have spent the last days talking with each other, deliberating, and you have a tough choice in front of you. I dont know how many times i have heard, can we mush all of the candidates together into one person . It is the basis of what i stand for, everybody has value, everybody has worth. It is time that our party comes together and it shows with our actions what our values are. So that when we say we are inclusive, we reform the party to be inclusive, so everybody has access to be decisionmakers. We have millions of people marching in the streets that we need to take advantage of. We need to be able to pull them in. To do that we need to accept that in the 21st century the way we have been doing business no longer works. We have to find a new path forward. We have to find an innovative and resilient way of keeping up with the fastpaced world and the new ways people communicate. More people in this country voting are millennials than any other group of people. And we have to we have to go out and ask them how it is done. We have to be willing to learn. In order to do that, that means we need to listen. The focal point of this campaign has been about listening to each other. And with the regime that has taken over the country, we are going to have to empathize, move into our hearts, and listen to what the people of our country and party want. And so as you deliberate, as you make this important decision, i ask for you to take a moment before you hit the button. Yes, we have to be pragmatic and smart. But in this moment, in this very critical time to look into our future, we need to lead with our emotions, we need to lead with our heart. That is what i have done in every moment of this campaign, to set that example. It is going to be so important for the people of our country to have strong examples. Because they are scared. We are scared. And in order to break through that fear we have to be strong in our convictions and values, and how we really look at what we are about. And showing that strongly with our actions. So thank you for giving me the , privilege of being a candidate for this office. I think it is amazing we have a process that allows anyone to step up and run for chair and anybody to step up and run for officers. [applause] ms. Brown i have said this before. I dont want to miss the opportunity to encourage every young woman, every person of color, every person from the Disability Community to look at how you serve. Because there should be no barriers in our party. That is what we should strive for, including every person and giving equal access. No matter where you are, what walk of life you come from, or what struggles you have, the Democratic Party needs to embrace everyone. Thank you, and good luck with your decision today. [applause] thank you. Le thank you, Sally Boynton brown. [applause] chair brazile the chair will now move to the nominating sam ronan. For sam . [applause] toir brazile who is going i will nominate thank you so much. The chair will recognize sam to give his speech. [applause] mr. Ronanan thank you. I appreciate that. Two years ago, i was active Duty Air Force wondering what am i going to do about the mess that has become our National Politics . And you know, it started in at government shut down in 2013. Our representatives in congress clearly do not understand their role in government. Which is a part, the part to represent us, the American People. And then for two more years, they did nothing but violate and attack our rights. I am an enlisted airmen. I am not an officer. I was not deployed. I am a grunt. I am a maintainer. All i know how to do is fix problems and put airplanes in the sky. That is my job. So when i look at the dnc now, the way things are with all of money, andions, the everything else, the hard feelings, all that i see is people who should be working together in love with each other , and supporting each other still hurting, still angry, still upset. I am one of them. Why . Because we should be better than this. We are the party of the people whether we choose to advertise it or not, we are the party of the people. We a
