You know, this is a small world. Craig was once in a punk band called bastards from hell, which is what dick and i are going to call our band. Craig is scottish by birth, so is barney. Two months ago, craig became an american citizen. [applause] im honored to call you a fellow american. Ladies and gentlemen, surprisingly, i have enjoyed these dinners. So tonight, i thought we would reminisce a bit. The first couple of years i came to this dinner, i was really into slideshows. [video clip] my mother has put together at least 70 scrapbooks about our life as a family. What i have done is pull out some of the actual, never before seen photos from these scrapbooks. [laughter] [applause] this was during the great drought of 1953. Dad, neil, doro, and jeb. In my family with all those kids in the tub, it is not arsenic in the water i would be worried about. People have asked me if it left hard feelings between my brother jeb and me. Not a bit. In fact, heres a picture of the governor of florida. [laughter] [applause] we have two dogs. This is our dog, barney. I tell him with eyebrows like that, he ought to be a senator. This is our dog spot. People often ask me how i came up with that name. I dont know. I am just kind of a creative guy. The truth is the door to the oval office has a little peephole. This is karen hughes peeping in on me. This is karl rove peeping in on me. This is condi rice peeping in on me. Spot has her own peephole. This is andy card peeping in on me. And ladies and gentlemen, this is the Vice President of the United States looking through a peephole. And dick, i hope you are not doing what it looks like you are doing. [laughter] next year, a new president will be standing up here. I have to say i am kind of surprised we dont have more president ial candidates here tonight like any. [laughter] senator mccain is not here. He probably wanted to distance himself from me a little bit. He is not alone. Jenna is moving out, too. The two Democratic Candidates are not here either. Senator clinton could not get into the building because of and senator obama is at church. But i am sure whoever the next president is will show up at these dinners, especially like the dinners in 2005 and 2006 when we had a couple of surprises up our sleeve. [video clip] the city slicker asked the old guy have to get to the nearest town. Not that old joke, not again. [laughter] [applause] ladies and gentlemen, i have been attending these dinners for years. And just quietly sitting there. Well, i have got a few things i want to say for a change. [applause] i am married to the president of the United States, and here is our typical evening. [laughter] 9 00, mr. Excitement here is sound asleep. And i am watching desperate housewives. Ladies and gentlemen, i am a desperate housewife. I want to talk about some serious issues such as ok. [laughter] here it comes. Nuclear proliferation. [laughter] nuclear proliferation. Nuclear proliferation. Nucular proliberation. All right, all right. Maintain. Stay cool. Lets give this a try. We must enhance noncompliance protocols sanctioned not only at iaea formal sessions but through intersessional contact. [laughter] we must enhance noncompliance protocols sanctioned not only at eieio formal sessions. But through intersexual conduct. [laughter] nailed it. [laughter] we have had a lot of fun over the years. Remember the year i mentioned ozzy osbourne, and he stood up on a chair and blew me a kiss . So few leaders get that kind of experience. You know, i love the crowds here. It is an interesting crowd. Just think, Pamela Anderson and mitt romney in the same room. Isnt that one of the signs of the apocalypse . Which brings me to dick. For eight years as Vice President , dick has ridden shotgun. Probably not the best analogy. [laughter] but he is a dear friend, and he has been the greatest straightman in the history of the world. Dick, i dont know what i would have done for material without you. Get out and get a little fresh air and exercise. Let me show you what he has been up to. [laughter] walk down the street [laughter] lynne and laura were out of town recently, so i called up dick and said, why dont we go to a movie . He said, great idea. Lets go to a cowboy movie. [laughter] yep, finally went to see brokeback mountain. Let me tell you whooeee yippee kiyay. Dick sat through the movie. He did not say a word. We come out. After a while he says, nice horses. [laughter] i said, yep. He became real quiet again, kind of serious like. I knew something was on his mind. Finally turned to me and said, you dont suppose the lone ranger and tonto . Down the lane i look dick cheney is struggling with documents he has been withholding it is good to touch the brown, brown grass of home yes, you are all going to miss me the way you used to diss me but soon i will touch the brown, brown grass of home [laughter] [applause] what i like best about these evenings is the laughter and the chance to thank you for the work you do for the country. I also knew this was a good chance to put aside our differences for a few hours. One thing we all share whether we are native citizens or new citizens like craig is a tremendous appreciation for our people in uniform. An appreciation symbolized by the United States marine band, celebrating its 210th anniversary this year. [applause] i love the band. And so im going to say my farewell to you by doing something i have always wanted to do. And i do it in the spirit of our shared love for this country. [applause] [drums beating] [band playing] [crowd rhythmically clapping] [laughter] [laughter] [crowd rhythmically clapping with the music] [cheers and applause] [drums rolling] cspan brings you live coverage from the White House Correspondent dinner. Republican president ial candidate and Ohio Governor john kasich brought his campaign to a synagogue in great neck, long island, where he spoke to members of the congregation. Cameras were not permitted inside. But afterward, the governor talked to reporters about what he said, as well as the u. S. Role in the middle east peace processes. The New York Primary is on tuesday. This is 10 minutes. Governor kasich i am currently working on a secret plan, to delay the primary so that i can spend more time eating in new york. And we have not been we are going to reveal the secret plan soon. Because, listen, yesterday we were in watertown. The last time that a president for candidate had been in watertown, i was informed, it was teddy roosevelt. It was fantastic. The only problem was that i did not get an opportunity to see the lake. Which is or the island. Or the thousand islands. But if you know or not, a chef from new york city ripped off thousand island dressing. That is not right. We went to utica yesterday. We had a beautiful effort. Today, in the city and the neighborhoods, this has been so great. I am back to syracuse syracuse, i should say. On monday, i had a great time with the legislature up in albany. It has just been a wonderful, wonderful time. And then, there is no question that the opportunity that i was given today, to be in this great synagogue, given an opportunity to speak to the congregation, it will go down as one of the great moments in my lifetime. And what a privilege. So, questions . Are you in the process of examining a potential Vice President nominee yet . Governor kasich i am not, not today. Has the process started . Governor kasich somebody said to me that we need to begin to think about it. I said it seems a little early. So, this was just mentioned to me. I dont want to mislead you. I will get back to you on that then. Governor, your speech about faith and the world, why did you decide to come here today and deliver that . Governor kasich i really do not know what i was going to say when i got here. This was my speech. [laughter] ok, this was it. I wrote it about five minutes before i got here. Not out of disrespect to the people i was going to speak to, but i had a lot of things that i wanted to say. I did not want to make a political talk. I was just not interested. You go into a synagogue to talk about faith, i think. Well, i do not know other than to say that i felt that i had to follow my instincts. And on two separate occasions during that talk, i reminded everyone that surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. And i will dwell in the house of the lord forever. You see, that is about hope. It is also about why sometimes when i said things on the campaign trail about this is not the only thing that matters to me, people have questioned my resolve. It is not my resolve the need to be questioned. It is the fact that i believe life is more important than a political campaign. Because we are here, and then we are gone. That is why i think it is so important that we live a life beyond ourselves that i do not minimize the critical importance of leadership like teddy roosevelt, dwight eisenhower, ronald reagan, harry truman. Leadership does matter. Winston churchill, leadership matters. That is why i run for this office. But at the end, you know, and needs to be kept in perspective. And so, i tried to work to develop my faith as best as i can. But as i told them, sometimes you do not know how strong your faith is until the storm enters your life. And you hope that with faith, it also puts into perspective your successes. So, i cannot tell you anything other than i got moved by the spirit at a moment like this. Probably some wished i had talked more about policy or what ever. But that is all i have today. Governor, you give everybody help. If you are president , we had the candidates talking about being a neutral broker. Governor kasich i am not a neutral broker when it comes to israel. The one thing i said is that the israelites had entered the promised land. And they always will be in the promised land, forever, until the end of human history. They will be there. I am not neutral when it comes to israel. I consider them to be one of the greatest allies, the only democracy in the middle east, under constant attack. Both above the ground and beneath the ground, with people walking in and trying to kill jews, just because they happen to live in israel. I mean, it is a terrible situation. We would all love to see some sort of twostate solution. That is up to the parties. I will not tell the israelis how to run their security. How to run all their foreignpolicy. If i have something i want to tell them, i will tell them without any cameras being around. But they are undergoing tremendous pressure today because of the stabbings that has occurred. It seems that is one thing after another. I am not a neutral party with israel. You count me as a force in their corner. Foursquare in their corner. [applause] and in regard to that, i believe they need to constantly have military superiority. And i am very happy with the fact that, even when i was in congress, we began the early days of the iron dome. But it has become clear that the attacks, in every single way, i am also concerned about the rise of antisemitism in the world. I will tell you this. It will not be tolerated on our College Campuses. You are saying a twostate solution would be on the parties to achieve that. What role, if any governor kasich you know, the United States can always serve as a mediator. And that i have done this at times in my light to bring parties together. Level of for some peace, but you have to have willing partners. That is why president s do not run around the world having meetings without the opportunity to achieve something. You have got to have willing partners and i do not think the israelis have a willing partner for peace. A willing partner would appear and say, let us see if we can stabilize the situation, i would be the first person there to help. One question from the public. Gov. Kasich i have to go. Finally [indiscernible chatter] lets go. Yeah. Itll happen. Ranks governor governor sir gov. Kasich thanks for coming. [indiscernible] [car horn honks] hey. Where are we going . Right in here. Steph curry. [laughter] hi, governor. [indistinct conversation] hi. [indistinct chatter] hi. Come over here. It is great to be here with you. Gov. Kasich when you eat a pickle, you have to put your finger up in the air like this. Am i right . If you do that, its not right. Governor kasich, you said you would first go to ireland if you became president. Have you changed your mind . Governor kasich i never said my first trip was to ireland. Where did you get that . No, why would i say that . Because i am irish. Gov. Kasich i mean, there is nothing wrong with it. There is nothing wrong with it. No. So, is it true . Gov. Kasich no. So, governor, ok. Sorry. Wait until he is done eating. Sorry. [indistinct conversation] [laughter] [indistinct conversation] governor kasich you know, i may have asked for matzah. The cleverest answer i have had was when a reporter said i was 29 points down, what do you do to bridge the gap. [indiscernible] salad, chicken soup. Governor kasich and i ate a pickle. Two of them. And im going to have one more. [indiscernible] its good, huh . Gov. Kasich i am going to fly home and have dinner with one of my daughters. She is 16yearsold. We are going to go out. Do you have daughters . Yes. Governor kasich how many . One. Gov. Kasich do you have sons . One. Gov. Kasich so on that basis, im going to assume you have two kids. Gov. Kasich give this man some publicity. Talk about your restaurant. When did you start . My father, about 25 years ago. Governor kasich where are you from . Originally from russia. From ukraine. Gov. Kasich wonderful. We have to get ukraine its independence. Where are you from in ukraine . And when did you leave . In 1973. In 1983 [indiscernible] governor, good luck. Governor kasich thank you governor kasich thank you. Governor kasich i am going to have another pickle. Three pickles i will take the remains to pierre. How many pickles . Gov. Kasich what is your specialty . We are very good on the chicken soup. It has matzo balls. Cornbread. Governor kasich where do you live . I live in [indiscernible] brooklyn. Governor kasich we appreciate you having us in here. No, no, i cant eat anymore. I have eaten so much, i cannot eat anymore. And im going to have dinner with my daughter. So i am going to give this pastrami to kevin miller. Kevin miller. Kevin, come here. Governor, is this better than corn beef at lennys in cleveland . Governor kasich do not try to trip me up. I make enough mistakes on my own. I am not getting in on that. I have an opinion. But i will not comment. I love soup. Its good. Mmm. What kind of desserts you have . [laughter] we do apple strudel. Baked apple strudel. Gov. Kasich apple strudel . Could we have an apple strudel in three . So i will have a little piece. We have to have it in threes, though. Sure, right away. Governor kasich wow. [indiscernible] governor kasich wonderful. Thank you. Governor kasich yeah, for all of you who are here, people from new york. I could not have ever had a better time in any campaign, than being able to campaign in new york. And i have mentioned earlier today, going to watertown. The only candidate who had been there before was teddy roosevelt. It is incredible. You know . Visit to teddys home. Beautiful. How about that theater that we played in . The paramount . It was me, frank zappa. I dont think zappa was ever there. Gov. Kasich Dweezil Zappa was there. I think. Hello . [laughter] what do you think . N yeah, i am going to have a little strudel. Kasich yeah, im going to have a little strudel. They have never seen me eating any dessert. Did you cut it in three pieces . Three pieces, without any of that whipped cream or fattening stuff. Just strudel. Three plates. I am going to have a little piece. He is going to have a strudel, too. Three pieces. Perfect. Perfect. Ok. Theres plates right there. Im going to make a mistake i know. [laughter] gov. Kasich there we go. Ok, just so you could i will not eat my strudel with a knife. I will use my finger. Ok, here you go, shrimp. Strudel for you. Were going to eat it like this. Here. Wow. Yeah, very good. Is that apple in there . It is apple strudel. Baklava. Governor kasich lovely. I commend this restaurant to everybody here. Thank you very much. Governor kasich thank you.
