cathedral, and the burial service at arlington national cemetery. we are on the steps of the capitol. there's is a huge crowd that has gathered. the watch is almost over. van is about to play hail to the chief. the casket will be brought down. the family is looking into the rotunda. a very quiet crowd. they are paying their last respects now. -- thed morning air cason will roll to arlington national cemetery. -- will notice in the crowd they are conscious that there is a television camera on them. you will see no waves. i saw one. there always tends to be just one. this day of mourning is reaching it's final act. feeling.only one just one. shared by all of us. let's go back to the studio. that from jack on the steps of the capitol. thing,n incredible beginning with the tragedy and the assassination. that seems aftermath like a mad unraveling. in chicago, a man turned to his wife and said the president was shot in the head grid i am going to shoot myself in the head. he did. it was fatal. in iowa, a man was enraged by his father's remarks. he attacked him with a knife and stabbed him to death. ands as though reason sanity are thin films -- they can be scratched through when something terrible happens. it will be good when the nation is back on a more even keel. >> what the chief justice had in mind -- you pointed out the irony that this man believed above everything else in reason and tolerance. of a mant the hands who was clearly intolerant. the congressman from texas said that he sincerely hoped that if there was any benefit at all -- that at least that benefit would be that the world learned a lesson. our country learned the lesson. the state learned a lesson. --remism is truly >> one thing is the generator -- generosity that came forth. one hour after president kennedy's funeral, there will be a service in texas. on friday whene he tried to catch oswald. he was shot down. you will recall from the new stories that he died without money. there was no provision for a pension under the system there. they have donated many thousands of dollars to his family. -- i knew when i heard this that people would desire to do something. >> a republican congressman will toe it a federal crime conspire against the president of the united states. many americans were not aware of this. it had not been a federal crime to do this. someone could couldn't -- kidnap a child. crimes, likeious assaulting a president, that have not been a federal crime. it does not stop there. -- certainly, ied if he had lived, he would have been tried as an assassin. it did not matter. if we look back on the history -- when john wilkes booth killed even those in the by aing house were tried federal court. this is part of the whole constitutional system. in the wake of that, many people felt an injustice had been done. the people in the boarding house had been tried by the military. there was no necessity for making this a federal crime. it was not a significant change. emotions of the congressman. i do not really think that there is a need for it at this particular moment. there is an odd statistical safety. -- 35 have held the office of president, including president johnson. have tragically been removed from office by an act of violence. it would seem that the pressure of the office might indicate that there was a potential for a higher number. >> well -- >> there is a safety that it is not too likely to happen. >> statistically, more than 20% of our presidents have died in office. >> that is true. >> four violently. in that sense, in terms of numbers and statistics, one out of every five men who are elected president will die in office. >> they do not live through the office. one interesting note -- you noticed the riderless course. that is symbolic of the commander-in-chief. it was not able to be cave -- behave in a way that it was trained. this course was a pakistan thorough bred. it belonged to mrs. kennedy. he acted nervous because he had never been trained with crowds. police forces are. i think that we have talked before about mrs. kennedy and the incredible grace with which she meets this terrible hour. she brings dignity to it. casketl walk behind the when the proceedings begin. --i thought it was terrible the moving story that congressman boggs told. the three-year-old son was taken away by one of the police guards. the youngster that small could not realize or comprehend what was going on. he became restless. he took a few steps away from the rotunda to the speaker's office. he walked in there -- there were two american flags. they were decorations on the desks. they youngster looks at them and they gave him one. he held it and said, can i have the other one for my father? terribly -- >> one of the most moving things. the merciful innocence of a small child. it is like the lion in the play. -- all remember the name the way home, the boy said, even after being told, he said i wanted to show him my new hat. that kind of thing is more poignant than the known grief of an older person. we want to take one last look at the capitol rotunda. the coffin has reposed through the night. havethousands of people been able to file past and pay their last respects. end of thenear this broadcast for today. we will switch to the rotunda. where is that? they may have found that we tend to repeat a great deal. that is for the benefit of those who could not stay with us at all times. the many facets of this event -- it has seemed repetitious to those of us involved, but in a way, as unrelenting as it has been, it is a remarkably short time to do proper honor to a man who has given so much to this country. as a warrior and a statesman. a much shorter time than the old days. transfer funeral lincoln, which lasted four weeks. today, we will see the final resting place at arlington national cemetery. -- three days after the assassination. we're drawing near the end now of our special broadcast. i would like to make a comparison between this tragedy and another tragedy of a totally different nature. wellsr historians like hg are sometimes accused of distorting the facts to make points. we watched a long line of mourners passing through here, we could not help but make a contrast with the scene described that happened in vienna. on a rainy day in 1791, a horse- drawn cart had delivered a coffin. the lone gravedigger dumped his burden into a whole. he drove away. he left no stone to mark the spot. there is no clergyman. there was not one living creature who cared enough to follow that corpse to its final resting place. none except for a small dog. he sat alone whimpering. that was how it was in vienna. they buried mozart, like a dog. today, no one knows where mozart sleeps. the music that he left as a monument more magnificent than anything. his music is our pride and our shame as men. our pride because it urges us to rise above ourselves. our shame because it reminds us of the brutal way that we broke the heart and then the body of a genius. will beohn f. kennedy laid to rest beneath the earth of arlington national cemetery. all the world will know where he sleeps. he will be interned with all the reference that can be provided. great princes and heads of state have come from far corners of the world in homage. all through the long night. more than 200,000 people filed through the rotunda to gaze upon his coffin. to feel the breath of eternity touch their little lives. a martyr dies in vain. if martyrdom does not inspire men -- christ without christianity would be meaningless. we do not wish to partake in deification of john f. kennedy. he was a man. with customary human flaws and blemishes. if his death is to be meaningful and hence his life -- americans must remember the things for which he stood. he inspired the admiration of the world. we do not surface memory when we respond with nothing better than an of guilt, penitents, and anger. that leads to self-pity and a desired for revenge. result wasd tawdry seen yesterday in dallas, when a man committed murder. other americans, such as when we saw at national airport, applauded the killing of the accused assassin. she cried out in hatred, and good, i am glad he is dead. if that was all that we learned from our late president, then his martyrdom would indeed have a hollow ring. if that is all his example means to us, then the weeds will grow tall over his grave at arlington. we will forget. his monument is you and me. what we make of america. unlike mozart, he leaves us no music. he does leave us his actions. his examples, his words. tend his words are these, in history at style. when he was a young man. any system of government will work when everything is going well. it is the system that functions in the pinches that survives. appreciatenedy would if you would try to help your government function. in this pinch. ♪ >> we will bury a president this morning. preparations are being made for that now. this is the scene and the rotunda of the national capital. throughout the sometimes accused of distorting the facts to make points. we watched a long line of mourners passing through here, we could not help but make a contrast with the scene described that happened in clergyman. there was not one living creature who cared enough to follow that corpse to its final resting place. none except for a small dog. he sat alone whimpering. that was how it was in vienna. corners of the world in homage. all through the long night. more than 200,000 people filed through the rotunda to gaze upon his coffin. to feel the breath of eternity touch their little lives. a martyr dies in vain. if martyrdom does not inspire men -- christ without christianity would be meaningless. we do not wish to partake in deification of john f. kennedy. he was a man. with customary human flaws and blemishes. if his death is to be meaningful and hence his life -- americans must remember the things for which he stood. he inspired the admiration of the world. we do not surface memory when we respond with nothing better than an of guilt, penitents, and anger. that leads to self-pity and a desired for revenge. result wasd tawdry seen yesterday in dallas, when a man committed murder. other americans, such as when we saw at national airport, applauded the killing of the accused assassin. she cried out in hatred, and good, i am glad he is dead. if that was all that we learned from our late president, then his martyrdom would indeed have a hollow ring. if that is all his example means to us, then the weeds will grow tall over his grave at arlington. we will forget. his monument is you and me. what we make of america. unlike mozart, he leaves us no music. he does leave us his actions. his examples, his words. tend his words are these, in history at style. when he
