Academy. It is great. I have learned that the bottom line, which they focused on and i respect they say this is not, we are losing money. How do we encourage these companies to keep programs going . I understand the community aspect, but are the corporations doing something viable or positive . Program, where they take a test and see how they qualify in the it field. They start to educate them. At the end of that program, microsoft has said we will int erview you. They also have heart nurse partners to interview. How do we encourage them to keep this going . I understand the bottom line. I see this as an investment. That we made they will stay with the company to help it grow. And curiouser by your thoughts. I would like to take that first. The bottom line is, what is important to every company, right . You have a budget that you have to sustain. I will tell you that there is not a ceo in this nation that does not want to have great employees, trained and able to do what they do. This goes back to the point i made earlier. When you separate all of these veteran programs and talk about the divide, it almost becomes a whole thing about this group losing money. Talk to microsoft about what it is costing to train the other employees. Should we integrate that . I are the pieces that do believe the cynical side people, that a lot of not necessarily microsoft, but a lot of employers do this. I have had employers call me and say i really want to get a hybrid amputee. They want a poster child to show that theyre doing something. Microsoft is not the case. We need to ensure there is more integration. These programs are not necessarily strung out from differences. Every ceo wants quality employees with great attitudes. Nobody wants a i will use the other word. Other word. Se the we need to teach these companies that these are citizens and great people. The great thing that veterans bring some of them have more skills than anybody else around. Just my thought. We have a comment to make . Think we need to publicize best practices. Not just to ourselves, but to the Business World at large. I will single out usaa. Job of a great institutionalizing these practices throughout the company, from the highest level to the lowest level. That is what makes some of these initiatives successful. They are embedded in the culture of the company. We do not see enough of that. Thank you. Mic 2 over there. Thank you for being here and for your comments. I am with the volunteers americo rps. We provide services to veterans and also we are a housing developer. You have talked about employment and connecting the community on helping veterans and families returning. What ie not focused on have seen in mr. s diction. Jthis jurisdiction. The stock of Affordable Housing is diminishing. Employed, veterans be living in Affordable Housing . In fairfax county, 10,000 homes have gone from affordable used to mark a great housing. I live in howard county. And a county council meeting, they were talking about new development where it cost 2000 for anybody to live in a onebedroom apartment. My question is, how can we be resourceful to increase that Affordable Housing stock for veterans . The hud program is a wonderful program. It is not enough. What might you provide us a far as guidance on incentives for developers . What are things that you have heard are working . As a developer, were here to do that and provide Housing Assistance to veterans. What is the formula that might work . I might take that. It depends where you are in the country. Living in this area is a high cost area. Us,is a huge partner for not only an adjusted, but in other communities. Augusta, but in other communities. Solely, ust rely on them it is unaffordable. If you role in the qualifying security, butcial if you role in unemployment, even if partial employment one of the meanings things that we run into when you start to combine resources and benefits is that one negates another. You have someone who is fully qualified for Social Security because they have a disability. X number ofre than hours and now they are not eligible. It is a trickledown affect before you know it. How do you do it . Way, isoach, holistic to not look at housing. Look at housing with employment and other earned benefits. We have also gone to local apartment owners. Augusta, about 15 are vacant at any time. That is not the case here. Whenwe have found is that we bring a qualified veteran to a developer and say, if there is anything beyond homeownership, behavioral issues, if anything comes up, call us. You do not have to figure out howho to go to. They say really . We become a partner with them. You are all over the United States doing great stuff. I am sure you have that experience in other places. Did that answer your question . Ok. Next question, over here. I am a senior at Georgetown University right now. As someone who is very much out of the loop on this issue and knows relatively little, what would you suggest as a way that i can contribute to the Many Solutions you have mentioned . Also, as a common concerned citizen, what would you tell them to get involved on this issue . I would strongly consider joining one of the components of the armed services. [laughter] thank you. Go ahead. I do not want you to walk away [laughter] there are a lot of reasons why people cannot serve. You can serve, whether through americorps or peace corps. There are probably, in this audience, 1020 nonprofits that would jump at having a georgetown senior. There is a handwrite here. Senior who has the passion and the aptitude to ask that question. Congratulations. This is a great place to be. I would say the same thing not only americorps in these other organizations, but i can tell you that we have hired interns over the summer. For one reason or another, they do not want to serve. I cannot imagine why you would not want to, but i know that a lot of people cannot. Especially now that we are downsizing. Take a look at the internship. I do not know what youre studying, but think of this narrative. At least a group on your campus, how you can get with them and write a paper. Help them write a paper. There are guys at georgetown who are great not great writers. You can help them. You have to go on here and get involved. We will have a bidding war at the end. Next question. Lsen, i am the Vice President of Student Affairs at georgetown. From your experience, i have heard complementary comments, but what do you think Higher Education does not get or approaches in a way that is not optimal with regard to working with returning veterans . Years to gete 19 my bachelors degree. I am taking this one. [laughter] dont you get . Where do i start . First of all, one of the big problems we make is i have been in a lot of meetings where they say every veteran has to get an education. It is hard. You have a family of four, it is hard to go back to work. Extending the benefits that you spouses and children, that is where you start. There is a huge cap and gap in our education. The more people we can get, the better. We had a program in san diego called troops and teachers. I do not know if it still exists, but that is how you make a difference. The other thing is a tutorship and getting smart seniors. Was it kiernan . Like kiernan to help in the enlisted ranks. Their enlisting veterans in the highly selective schools. Rate fortion undergrad. They may have passed the sats, but were letting veterans into the school for different reasons. It is helping with tutorship wrote rims, which can be huge. I never would have made it through my Masters Degree Program at georgetown if it was not for my army program. I wastell you how 50 years old when i went through my Masters Degree Program. With these young captains and majors, what they did to help mentor me i did not know how to use excel. I took macroeconomics and those mentor ship programs i created a network of this class that has been unbelievable. Those are some of the first things i would say. Make it quick . First, georgetown is doing a lot of things right. My husband went through the mba program and was deployed part way through. I cannot tell you how helpful georgetown was to him. I know they are doing the right things. A lot of University Campuses are doing the right things, but they have not pulled it together yet. They have not integrated what theyre doing. Outsiders cannot see what theyre doing. Integrating resources that already exist we work with for organizations, four schools in our area. We focus on the outcome of graduation rate, not enrollment. Focus on optimizing the g. I. B ill. How do you match them up . How do you take a fouryear degree and do it in 36 months to keep the vets from having a gap in their benefit . The about to be homeless veterans, they lose nd over a christmas break or a summer break. Were trying to close that up. Partner with everyone else in the community. Lastly, partner with Technical Schools or community colleges. Those who cannot make the cut, do not just discharge them. Hands them off warmly to the next school. Say we are here for you. Maybe sometime you will you may want to come back to georgetown later. That is my recommendation. Lets do a time check. The time is getting pretty short. Questl take the next six ions. Any objections by extending for eight minutes . Timeframe. I will take the next question here. Our panelists will be here we do need to stick to the timeframe. I will try to be as quick as possible. My name is dan sullivan and i am nonprofit named for a marine who died from physiological post deployment illnesses that were mistaken for psychosomatic. It is the only Nonprofit Organization in the nation entirely dedicated to confronting and eradicating post deployment bonuses. We do this through Public Awareness and research grants. Will get to my question, but as a prelude, i wanted to note that during the work of this organization, i have met a lot of military families and military veterans who are suffering from rarer deployment related illnesses. They have formed incredible networks of action or social media across the country. They have been able to organize and bring about incredible change, working with politicians and referring veterans to specialists who can identify Rare Diseases and treat them. I have noted that a lot of building andout capitalizing on the strength of veterans, is focused on employers. Encouraging employees to hire veterans. I wonder if the panel could reflect on the value of social entrepreneurship. And programs that might encourage the use across the country. This one. Take we are a social media based organization, so we see what youre talking about all the time. We have a National Presence in d. C. , but we are chapter based around the country. A lot of our presence is online. We do see military families bonding together, and service members, forming these grassroot efforts. They are very effective. They can do things that the nonprofit world cannot do. We have boards that we have to speak to. The private sector cannot do this. They have their stockholders that they have to speak to. Some of these efforts support some of the things that the others cannot do. Only they can do. They let us know about things that we may not know about, until they bubble up. Social media has been extremely impactful. 1015 years ago, these things might have been happening, but we did not know about them. Or it would have taken much longer to know about them. Thank you. Last question, over here. Time is running out. Next questions . Complements to you. S. Name is keith kelly, u department of labor. Hearing the department of labor mentioned for the first time in a long time. What do we have in this gig . I want to share with you on what is going on in atlanta. All things happened at the local level. It is not here in washington. Want to share with you that my legacy is working in in a department with a female days. Ary out of fdr all of those things that we take for granted. Ur partnership is 2500 American Job Centers scattered around the country, tied with 50 state governments and territories. There is not a governor that does not want to be just like the businesses. To revealy anxious the partnership in any community. A year ago, i moved from montana to this position. Those American Job Centers can be a key for the chamber of commerce. All of those things are out there. I want to applaud you for hi ring for attitude and training upon the skills. I give you credit for it. Lso really appreciate it is holistic. It is the veterans and their families, not just veterans. Veterans and their families. We are anxious to be a partner in and 2500 places out there, the real estate has been paid for. There are 20,000 people, including our primary partner, to assist you folks and what happens on the ground. They are local people too. Thank you. If you did not have the effort today, if you do not mind, stay around and ask your questions. I will make some closing remarks. Some key points. You heard the words earlier on, clearinghouse. We need a clearinghouse to get the information and make it clear. We need to know a point of contact. We have heard about the need for hiring managers and employees to be knowledgeable about veterans, skills, attributes, etc. We need to look at the holistic model of the entire family, not just the military person or veteran, but the spouses and kids. The word integration came up many times. It is really important to get people engaged in the community. I put out a few of the notes here. Oure is a need to increase collaboration, and coordination among organizations. By sharing lessons learned, successful models, resources, and best practices. Nonprofit, course, private, and public. From the national to the local level. This is integration of the veterans and their family members. Also, you heard it very clearly here. Looking at employment consider recruiting not just the veterans, but the spouses. That also applies to colleges. They are not only recruiting veterans for Higher Education, also recruiting the spouses and the children. Keep in mind, for those eligible veterans, tuition can be paid from their veterans benefits. Spouses and children recruit the entire family. We must get action. All of the things done here today, we must disseminate disinformation and get the facts out there. We must say how we will partner together to the work done. We know what the issues are, but the point is that we need to get together and lead those veterans and families and get services for them. Changingt the circumstances you have heard about veterans attributes. Is important to catch her capture that and help them get employment and housing. Consider usings, this model today. This seminar, this forum. Do the same thing in the local community. This is a great model, at the university level. Qc see many agencies putting programs together. Rarely do you see a university do this. This is a wonderful model. Im sure the doctor will help you with that. This is a really wonderful today,e questions here this is something really important that needs to be duplicated in other local communities. Thank you.
