Span radio app. More on this at 2 30 eastern today, where we plan to bring you todays White House Briefing live here on cspan. Taking decrepit old facilities and turning them around. Respogging them, rehabilitating them. Making them functional again. Environmentally cleaning them up. Mr. Hollingsworth helping manufacturers and distributors grow right here in america versus going overseas. So i did that for about 10 years and then moved into owning some of those manufacturing businesses themselves. Trying to figure out how we could create more opportunities, not only in the marketplace, but also for employees who wanted to come onboard and work with us. Reporter how did you get involved in that work . Mr. Hollingsworth i went to business school. I always knew i wanted to be in business. Back in 20042005 2004, 2005 and 2016, it was all the rage to go overseas. All these manufacturers were fleeing the United States and manufacturing seemed dead in the country. I never believed that. Always felt that this country has the most innovative, most productive workers in the world. The products that wed come up with, the Refined Processes that we were able to develop, really set us apart. And so i started investing these old manufacture fag silts and got lucky on a few manufacturing facilities and got ucky on a few. Certainly the energy reyou are resurgence in america. The realization that supply chains around the globe are fragile and other things have brought more Companies Back onshore. I was excited to be a part of that movement. Reporter why did you decide to run for congress . Mr. Hollingsworth i think my feeling was, we should be doing better than this. We should have more opportunities for americans and hoosiers to get great job, great jobs, to to see those jobs pay more over time. For people to be able to create businesses in their garages that become the apples and the googles of the world. I wanted to see more opportunity for americans and i think the way to do that is to bring real and genuine business sense up to washington. Create the opportunity for americans by ensuring that policies in washington reflect that the business of america should be business. And so i wanted to take some of the experiences id gained, one of many diverse experiences that are up here, but take that experience and help inform good policy. Inform my colleagues about what its like out in business, trying to create opportunities against difficult regulatory environment, right, or to create new products with a tax code that doesnt really work and promote growth. Reporter you grew up mostly in tennessee. How did you become the congressman from the ninth district of indiana . Mr. Hollingsworth i grew up in a small town in coal country in tennessee. But like many kids, moved away to go to college and met my wife shortly thereafter. As we moved all the ways a crogs the country for her ways a cross the country for her job way across the country for her job, we decided when we started a family that we wanted to live closer to her home. We live four miles from where she was born and raised. Six miles from all of her family. Shes one of five. As were expecting our first baby in july and the first grandbaby in the family, she knew that she wanted to be close her family. Reporter do you plan to keep a house in d. C. Or keep your family back there in indiana . Mr. Hollingsworth we are going to stay in indiana. Its hugely important. My wife and i, as we expect our first baby, we want to be close to her family. That was the entire point of living in indiana. To be close to family. So we could raise our kids. Then knowing their grandparents, seeing their grandparents on a regular basis. We have sunday night dinners every week. I know that my wife, now that weve started those, wouldnt ever give that up. So she remains in indiana and i continue to fly back and forth and get home as soon as i can. Reporter youre 33 years old . Mr. Hollingsworth correct. Reporter what does that mean for you in an institution where according to the Congressional Research service the average age of a member of congress is just under 58 years old . Mr. Hollingsworth i think what it means is we all bring a different set of experiences. My world was certainly shaped by the experiences that i the for mittive experiences. 2001, the attacks on new york city and the pentagon and in pennsylvania. Also the financial crisis of 2008 and twine. And being able to bring those 2009. And being able to bring those experiences to washington i think is very, very helpful. Certainly i absolutely respect all of my colleagues and all the many diverse experiences they bring. But i think millennials being represented in congress is hugely important to us, ensuring that policies reflect the massive amount of technological growth weve seen over the last 20 years. Reporter you dont plan to be a member of congress when youre in your 50s, do you . Mr. Hollingsworth i dont. One of the big things i continue to push is term limitses. I believe in them because we have to change this Institutional Culture in washington. I think the sense in district is that washington doesnt serve the people of this country as it should. And that representatives who make a career out of politics, instead of taking great experiences outside of that, whether thats being a doctor, being a teacher, or being in business, take that, inform Public Policy and go back to those career fields. We have professional politicians that are trying to climb a ladder and not serve their constituents and serve a Better Future for america overall. Reporter wleals the term limit that you pledge to . Mr. Hollingsworth i pledge eight years. Ill serve no more than eight years because i fundamentally believe that we should be the example for what the change we want to see in this world. I know that what matters is aligning incentives. I want representatives to understand theyre going to have to get another job again. To understand they have to raise their family under the laws that they create. That theyre going to have to live under those laws. If we dont have that fundamental alignment of interests, were going to lead to poor outcomes and policy. I want to make sure we stay away from that. Reporter what do you do after that eight years is up if you are reelected four times . Or three times. Mr. Hollingsworth probably spend a lot more time with my kizz kids. Reengage in the Business World and find an opportunity to create more value for the employees that work with me and in the market place. I hope to leave the economy, i hope to leave the country, i hope to leave the fiscal situation better than i found it and to have done my part to be able to ensure that every generation of americans that comes after us will live better than this one. Reporter every day you start by making random phone calls to constituents in the district . Mr. Hollingsworth i do. Not every day do i start that warkse but do i that. People dont like to get phone calls at 7 00 a. M. I make random phone calls. About 300 to 500. I get to hear the most fantastic stories and what theyre focused on. Reporter who have you talked to this week . Mr. Hollingsworth the Alzheimers Group was up here this week advocating. I had talked to a woman last week who had expressed to me how she cares for her husband. They have been married for decades. She lives in floyd county. Now she is having to care for him as he goes through alzheimers. Just hearing in her voils the desperation voice the desperation and sense of lifetime of memories gradually being eroded. She asked me if i ever see trump, if i talk to trump, if i get ant opportunity to hear from trump, i should ex pretty her deep desire for us express her deep desire for to us make sure resources get allocated to find a cure for alzheimers. I did. I wrote a letter to trump and said that id spoken with her and like many people across this country, theres a deep desire for a cure to alzheimers being found. And ensuring that we properly marshall the resources, aswoman as enable and empower the private sector through biotech innovation to be able to find a cure for that is hugely also ive heard from is huge. Ive also heard from law enforcement. I make sure i call local officials and First Responders to make sure i do all i can to support them as well. Reporter you didnt have a lot of political experience coming into this job. But you did have some experience with National Media dating back to when you were 15 years old in an interview with the Washington Post. Mr. Hollingsworth right. Yes. That was more foisted upon me than by my seeking it out but exactly. Reporter what was that about . Mr. Hollingsworth when i was very young, i went to a camp effectively for the summer that was really focused on businesses. And how to develop young entrepreneurs and people that were interested in businesses. Ive always been focused on how i could create opportunity in the marketplace, how i could help serve customers. I knew thats what i wanted to do. I was really excited to go out to oregon to do that. The Washington Post was really was really interested in this camp that was promoting young people into business and help them understand how opportunities might exist and how they could create sustainable, Viable Enterprises in the long run. I was just one of many that were there. Reporter about 20 years later, now the member of congress, what are your Committee Assignments . Mr. Hollingsworth im on House Financial Services which i love and im excited about. Its an area ive had a lot of interest in all of my life. I focused on finance in undergrad. But im a bannerwaving believe that are if we can get capital out to Small Businesses, if we can get capital out to individuals that want to start businesses we reignite this economy. We are not seeing the type of Small Business creation that we have over the last 40, 50 years in this country. Thats led to lack of employment growth. Its led to lack of opportunities for individuals to control their financial future. I want to get more capital out to them. I want people to be able to start those businesses in their garages, that eventually become the big businesses, that have hundreds of employees. Those types of Success Stories i want to hear about. I want to help create that for them by unlocking the Financial Services sector, to be able to get that capital out. Reporter congressman, ninth district of indiana, thanks so much for your time. Mr. Hollingsworth thank you. I appreciate it. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap.
