Transcripts For CSPAN Campaign 2022 Kansas 3rd Congressional District Debate 20221031

There with us and what will be the most unscripted hour of the entire congressional campaign, if you have heard the expression two heads are better than one, how about three heads . We will question our candidates as is visa rodriguez, news director at the npr affiliate. Charisse davis has represented Amanda Atkins says no, she is the republican candidate in this race, you have 60 seconds to give us a sense of how you are running this race. We have to understand that you have done it for two years, what have you actually done for us over the last two years, what can we expect the next two years . Thank you so much, thank you to the moderators, everyone who came together to make this debate happen. For folks that do not know my mom raised me and my brothers, i worked my way as a First Generation College student from Johnson County Community College to cornell got the chance to serve in the white house. We kansans Work Together to self test problems, like getting really for my family when we were in the darkest days in the pandemic by passing the largest trade deal in a generation and making sure that the care finally has the right to negotiate Prescription Drug prices. My opponent has a different set of ideals she has aligned herself with extremists that have called the elections into question, would decimate Social Security and medicare and would impose a total ban on abortion without exception. Those are not the approaches that would work for us. I will work for everyone listen everyone. Amanda, you were together on the ballot two years ago you came up short then, white are you in the why are you in the race this time around . What would you do differently . I have a simple question ive asked people in the third conditional Congressional District in the last two years. It takes me back to my childhood and a great president and Ronald Reagan, are you better off today . I consistently hear from the people across the third Congressional District, eight individuals, families, that they are not. Yet to look at records 40 your high inflation that people are your high inflation people are suffering. Interest rates are suffering rising. That is due to bad policies on the part of President Joe Biden and Charisse Davis has voted for its 100 of the time. I am forced first and foremost a business leader. I am focused on results, focused on doing good things for kids and for families, i am here today to expose her record, which has been bad. We will have plenty of time to do that, your time is up. We will get the questions. With the Supreme Court decision overturning roe v. Wade, abortion rights have come to the forefront of this years midterm election, in august, a clear majority of voters in the Third District reject the idea trip the right to abortion from the state constitution, was your view on the amanda i have been clear on this issue. It was a decision that was made by the Supreme Court, the dobbs decision, abortion policy is a statelevel issue. I strongly leave the decisionmaking needs to happen very close to the people. The people in the state of kansas have spoken. I have said because i believe it is a statelevel issue. I believe in federalism. Congress does not have a role here. As such i do not support a congressional ban on abortion. My opponent in comparison in joe biden want to make a federal issue. She supports taxpayer dollars being used for abortions. She supports very painful lateterm partial abortion. I know in this election cycle more important people in this community are focused on the economy. When i go out and neighborhoods they do not talk to me about abortion. They say amanda, i can no longer afford a carton of aches. Eggs. Sharice thank you, when roe was overturned folks were scared. I know tons of people write your home had anxiety. We watched as neighboring states were passing extreme laws. I have been very clear since the first time i spoke on this. I am prochoice. I will always fight to protect a womans right to choose and make sure that politicians are not the ones making the decision for you. My opponent has the issue is not her specific stance that she is prolife. Is that we cannot trust her on these issues. On her website she supports an agenda that would lead to a total ban with no exceptions. Your answer will change depending on who the audience is. Frankly it is very concerning and says a lot about what kind of representative you would be. Yet there just extra but. Amanda your comments are this honest. And deceptive. I have been i have been prolife my entire life. I have. Been very clear. I have been interviewed almost 15 times on this issue. I have said the federal government had does not have a role. I therefore do not believe the federal government should push a congressional ban on abortion. I would add that people in this district have already spoken. Should Sharice Davis your last word . Sharice i would encourage folks to go to my opponents website and look at the legislative agenda she has endorsed. It includes a total abortion ban. I will always fight to protect people from having state or federal politicians making your Health Care Decisions for you. Another question. There has been no evidence of widespread voter fraud and dozens of lawsuits have been dismissed for lack of evidence. Former President Trump in many of his allies insist that the election has been stolen from him. This is become a barometer of sorts if you believe the former president s unsubstantiated claims. Do you accept joe biden as a legitimate president of the guys ate sent you confidence and the United States and are you confident in the election system . Democracy is the bedrock of this country, any attempt by candidates to undermine the election is a dangerous move. Yes i do we have a legitimately elected president , should not be controversial and it does not take a lot of guts to say that. I will tell you that i have been very concerned about my opponents alignment with some of the most extreme voices of the republican party. Ted cruz, was just here, when the top election deniers in the country. The fact that she is most proud of having calvin haydens endorsement that has wasted Johnson County taxpayer dollars on various conspiracy theories. Calvin hayden, the Johnson County sheriff. Amanda. Amanda i have publicly stated i believe joe biden won the election. I have publicly stated a strong belief system the u. S. Constitution that our states should run elections. Here is great news for our voters. Our state election laws are very very strong. We have a great system of checks and balances in this state that i strongly believe in. My opponent by comparison supports legislation like hr one, the socalled or the people act that would nationalize elections. I believe in kansas election laws. It would do things like create an elections are as if the federal government is not big enough and poor public money into a campaign at a time were we are already stretched far through too thin. You have 30 things to rebut. Sharice thank you so much i feel like we have to acknowledge it almost took 20 months for my opponent to acknowledge that we had a legitimate 2020 election. I appreciate my opponent standing here today saying that she thinks we have quality, safe, Fair Elections in kansas. I wish she did not align herself with someone that continued to call that and question. Amanda i find it interesting when she talks about alignment. You should comment about it over the course of this debate, have you ever not voted with joe biden . Public record shows a you have voted with joe biden 100 of the time, within the last week there are members of his ministrations that came to this community and you would not show up with them. I have found it interesting that you have tried to hide with your affiliation with the president. I know, his record as it relates to the economy is a disaster. I know you will find ways of leaving it in later, on the economic front, wages are not keeping it pays pace with inflation. Supply chains remain inflexible, with winter approaching americans are preparing to face sky high home heating bills. What is the single guest action will take in congress to help york biggest action you will take and covet to help your constituents line there pockets. Amanda the single Biggest Issue i hear in the third condition third Congressional District is how worried they are about inflation. Right now, families, current inflation levels are hit roughly on average, a hit of 8,700 in negative expense per year. They are paying the same amount of money for the same goods and services. Families cannot afford that. My opponent has directly contributed to that. The big one, she voted for the American Rescue plan in the spring of 2021. She was warned by leftwing economists, people like Larry Summers that it would contribute to inflation. Here we are today, i by contrast are for a balanced budget and for getting this country back to a surplus. We need to stop reckless spending. Continue to reduce the deficit in this country. We need to commit to a balanced budget. Thank you and Sharice Davis plan is what . Sharice thank you so much, things have been hard from eight Public Health crisis that led to an economic crisis. I am hearing it from folks, my mom raised me and my brothers by herself. That anxiety, not being sure if you can put gas in the car or food on the table is real. It is why i focus on things like a federal gas tax holiday that would mean an . 18 per gallon savings. Making sure that we are not in places like china. My opponent, it is actually hard to take her position seriously when i know she was a senior aide to Sam Brownback when he decimated our states budget, destroyed our Public Education system, and downgraded our credit rating. Amanda here is my comment to ms. Davis. While you have contributed to the problem, decimated the economy, highest level of inflation in 20 years, increasing Interest Rates. In a recession that we are in or looming, the time period she was talking about, i was Building Business in this community and this country. I was building some of the new business areas that contributed to growth, hiring people in this community. I did so for 15 plus years. I did that in business and in health,. Health care. Sharice i want to turn really could lead to something my opponent has says a couple of times. She likes to cite statistics about voting with the president , he is not in the house he does not vote. That is based on less than 10 of the votes i taken this congress. I have not heard her mention the 70 of my bills are bipartisan. I have worked on on sticking our supply chains unsticking are supply chain to bipartisan info structure. The number of people trying to cross americas southern border has skyrocketed to significant highs this year. What is your view on federal immigration and what state policies you support . Sharice our immigration system is broken. This has been a problem for too long. What we really need is bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform. I have worked as hard as i can to find that agreement. We have been able to support, i have supported getting additional funding to secure our borders. Whether it is the technology that will help make us not only more effective but more efficient, i also think we need to make sure we are keeping our promises to our dreamers. People need to be treated as a humans they are. On immigration my concern is that my opponent will not take a bipartisan approach. I was so disappointed last time around when she failed to stand up to the former president when he was taking kids away from their families. Amanda. Amanda our border is not secure and it is an absolute disaster. I have been to the southern border. I know from conversations with our sheriffs and our District Attorney who is a supporter of mine. Where we have crime in this committee, underlying it it is so is about drugs. I went to the southern border, this is what i have heard, it is a direct result of the by demonstration, one, the borders of them, to the cartel is built a multibilliondollar industry and smuggling people and drugs across the border. Three, we have a humanitarian crisis nobody is talking about. I believe renee had need to have a skull wall in believe we need to have a is a call wall physical wall in some areas. We need to have hightech surveillance in combination. We need to protect our Border Control agents. Missed ms. Davis says you must defund ice. You have a chance to rebut. Amanda sharice i will talk about the things i voted to support like increasing technology at the border. Not only do we need to be effective need to be efficient with our taxpayer dollars. That is why i supported policies like that. I want to take issue with the fact that every time the issue of immigration and fixing our immigration system comes up, it is disappointing to hear my opponent regurgitate republican talking points. Amanda i would ask miss davis, abc can comment on this on a future question, our Vice President of the night states repeatedly of the United States repeatedly said the southern border secure. When will she support refute that . People are suffering a humanitarian crisis, our Border Agents have a message for you, they cannot believe you voted for 80 billions of dollars of money for more irs agents, they are not backed up, the message from the sheriff is that there is no end in sight. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the sussexes purity Social Security program will be paying out more money than it takes in. How will you address that issue . We need to be transparent with the American People that there is a looming crisis, if we do nothing over the course of next 10 years, people cannot expect people can expect as much as a 20 cut. That is a real problem. There are a couple of things we need to do. One, as someone who worked in business come we need to increase a number of people who pay into the system. I have a plan for women to reenter the workforce, particularly postcovid, i also believe immigration should be a workforce issue. I want people to come to this country in the right way and legally, finally people that i make two people that are at retirement or near, people that are age 50, we have to protect and preserve their benefits. Sharice thank you so much. I have always said the federal government needs to keep its promises. Social security is something that is one of those promises. People work their entire adult lives paying into Social Security. We need to make sure that we are managing the Social Security program in an effective way. This is one of the areas where i like the idea of getting more people into the workforce. It is why i support our small this is committees as a backbone of our economy communities as the backbone of our economy and the reason we have the kind of job growth we have. I am concerned because my opponent again supports go to her website she supports a website legislate a policy that would devastate so security Social Security. Amanda i have made very clear comments about how to bring more people into this country through the immigration process legally. I have a whole plan to bring more women back into the workforce. It is interesting, the only comment ive heard on your solution is that we need to have another czar over Social Security. It tells me and the people in the third Congressional District that congress, leaders like you need to want to kick the can down the road. Amanda, you get the final word on the Social Security wait. Sharice i want to Say Something serious here. My opponent, she keeps using this word deceptive. I want people to go to her website and look at the legislative plan, the plan she has endorsed that would decimate Social Security and force people to work many more years. That is as much time as you have. I get to have a question. This will go to you first. What in your view is the biggest single threat facing america . If youre elected to congress for the next two years what would you do to lessen that threat . Sharice thank you. First of all, my mom was in the army, my grandfather was in the army. My mom was stationed in germany when the berlin wall came down. We were over there when that happened. Watching Vladimir Putin and and unprovoked and aggressive way invade a democratic sovereign state like ukraine is truly alarming. I think we have got to make sure that we are continuing to stand with our allies on the world stage. By the way it would not of been possible under the previous president. We have to make sure we continue to impose strict sanctions on people like Vladimir Putin. We have to make sure we are protecting democracies, and i just think this takes cannot be higher on watching what is happening over there. The biggest threat for amanda is what . Amanda i appreciate the comments on global freedom, sadly at this point in time, i remember Amanda Atkins says no, she is the republican candidate in this race, you have 60 seconds to give us a sense of how you are running this race. We have to understand that you have done it for two years, what have you actually done for us over the last two years, what can we expect the next two years . Amanda i appreciate the comments on global freedom, sadly at this point in time, i remember Ronald Reagan saying this country should be a shining city on the hill. I grew up thinking about that, i thought about my own grandfather was a kurt trooper in world war ii and what it meant paratrooper in world war ii and what it meant to protect freedom. We need to ensure first and foremost that we have a strong economy. Right now we are in terrible shape. 40 year. Highs in terms of inflation. I have people calling my Campaign Office talking about the fact that they cannot afford socks or pay for eggs. It has doubled in price. We have to get back to managing our economy. The only way well do that is for washington to start solving problems again. We have to be fiscally prudent with our dollars and take very seriously that every dollar matters. There is as much time as you have on that. Rebuttal . Sharice i would absolutely to talk about the ways we can make our economy stronger. Set our kids up and grandkids for success. On this, when we talk about working together in a bipartisan way, my opponent would have been voting against what the u. S. Chamber called the most fiscally responsible investment in info structuring decades. If we want to talk about getting our economy back on track, he should look at eisenhower and invest in infrastructure. Amanda i come from a builder family, my father worked in heavy info structure for years. First and foremost i am a huge proponent of the structure infrastructure. I think it is a opponent of federal government in addition to national defense. We will have to get back to solving problems in this country. We are not in a great place. We have 40 year high inflation. Interest rates that are rising. We are in a recession. It is directly a result of the bad policies of joe biden and davis. Many cities across the state are sitting rising rates and halls im homicide and rising violent crime. What steps can they take . As i noted earlier, it is unfortunate that the shares in this community and District Attorney are supporters of mine. I will go back to an earlier point. Where violence and crime exist in this community is always underlined about drugs. District attorney said some times to times, he just said ata press conference that he is now seeing overdoses everyday related affectional. Related to fentanyl. We need to backup our Police Officers having a strong relationship with our schools and health care, for sure. I will go back to my comments on the border, this country is not safe if we cannot first and foremost secure our border. We do that with a wall, backing up Border Agents, and making investments. A joe biden has failed to do that. The sheriff said to me, amanda, where is the end in sight . I do not see it. Democrats have failed on this issue. We need Real Solutions. What are those Real Solutions . Sharice thank you. Look, i just know people are scared of for a lot of reasons, actually. Sometimes parents are scared to send in their children to school because they do not know if there will be a mass shooting incident because it has become way too prevalent. I have done what i can to support legislation that would keep people safe from guns. We had the most meaningful bipartisan piece of legislation in over two decades just passed out of the house and senate, and the president signed it. And when it comes to sending the resources necessary to our local and state law enforcement, i have absolutely voted to do that, to give them not only the training, but the equipment necessary. And that access to Behavioral Health resources, to figure out ways to deescalate situations. Amanda at its Amanda Adkins . Amanda it is difficult to say that you are bipartisan we have voted way joe biden 100 of the time. Your community would not call you bipartisan. And clearly right now this community is facing Serious Problems again starting with the economy. At the number one thing i hear about in this community. I will say the same things i said earlier, the highest levels of inflation, including an 8,700 hit to households in this community, Interest Rates rising. We will have to wait, because you are out of time. Charice, last word on crime. Sharice i think that, again, i would point to my record. I have absolutely supported getting the resources. In fact, i am working on upgrading the Police Command center right now, a mobile command center look, i have spent my time in congress trying to figure out what are the issues we can come together on and i have been able to do that. Recently, Jerry Marianne and i got a critical piece of innovative legislation passed around advanced air mobility. Kansas has a huge opportunity when it comes to aviation, partly based on our strong history there. But i am concerned about my opponents approach. I am not sure i have heard anything come out of her mouth today that was not a National Republican talking point. You have the opportunity to talk about how you are more bipartisan, amanda. Amanda here is what people know about me in this community. Given my 20 years doing work in business for the community, work for at risk kids and families what they know is when i see a problem, i worked to solve that problem. I am a very independent thinker in many ways. And a lot of that i have my own solutions. She has cited National Republicans, if you go to Amanda Adkins. Com, you will find solutions i worked on and have written based on my experiences in business related to economic growth, the steps we need to take. Energy security, it is an important issue we have not touched on yet, but how we get back to security in this country. Those are the areas of commitment i am focused o in this campaign and i am willingn to work with anybody to get to a solution. 30 seconds to rebut. Sharice thank you. I would point to my record again. 70 of my bills are bipartisan. Im always here let me point to the last president. I did not agree with donald trump on a very many things, but when we all came together i was one of the democrats that stayed at the table when we got the largest trade deal in a generation past. Amanda adkins . Amanda i will point out that the main reason why i made the decision to run again is that i knew and i heard from people in the district, that the trajectory we are on is disastrous. And it is directly the result of some of the policies that joe biden put forward. And people in this community are suffering as a result of those policies. They this election cycle is what i hear in neighborhoods all the time, is that the economy, and inflation and Interest Rate growth this is on the minds of people. While we are told the cost of living and inflation is the Biggest Issue, some analysts claim that education is the iceberg issue of this mentor, yet, for the most part it has been an issue for local school boards. What role, if any, should Congress Play in deciding how students are educated . Amanda i believe education is an issue. I have children and their later years of high school, and i have hired people in the workforce our Education System needs to focus on preparing people for the workforce. I well talk about one area that has been topical, the forgiveness of Student Loans, which i hear a lot about. I will be clear. Here in this time when we are in economic devastation, forgiving Student Loans and tacking on an additional 200,000 to taxpayers is unforgivable. Most people i talked to say, i did not even go to college, why should i have to pay for this . What we need to focus on instead, and i will comment on postsecondary, there needs to be a transparent dialogue with our young people, what career are you trying to pursue . How much is it going to cost for you to be able to do that, whether it is post secondary or technical . You need to be able to come out of it and not have a significant amount of debt. Nick lets ask Sharice Davids, same question. Sharice absolutely, education is so important and i think that some of that is right here in our community its extra topical because kansas has a history of having great Public Education and great Public Education systems. I graduated from Leavenworth High School with a great Public Education right here and then Johnson County Community College, one of the best in the country. And i think that we have to support our young people. It is not the place of the federal government to dictate curriculum or any of that, but it is our place to make sure that they have resources, so there is broadband and access to technology. On this specific issue, my opponent i just we cannot trust her with her education. Being Sam Brownbacks senior aide, by his side when they were decimating our public schools, when they had to go down to four days a week, i just do not think that we can trust her on this issue. Nick lets give her a chance to respond. Amanda people know that i have spent the better part of 10 plus years doing work in the education space to help young people. In my free time, and in addition to working in business, i started a philanthropy that is focused on offering scholarships to children in at risk families to ensure that they are healthy and that they can start kindergarten ready. Because when i thing about the continuum of the workforce, children have to start early and if they want to be prepared to work for some of our greatest businesses. Nick final word, miss davids. Sharice during my opponents time as the chair of the childrens cabinet, the budget for that was decimated. And kids who are three and four should not need scholarships to get access to any kind of education, we should be having Early Childhood education because it pays dividends in the future. If we are going to talk about set up for success, we have to invest in Early Childhood education and not three or fouryearolds getting scholarships from one nonprofit. Nick we are ready to hear from kc you are. Lisa what is the federal governments role in mitigating the impact of Climate Change . Sharice uh, i mean, first of all right here at home i know that people outside the area may not think that we are thinking about it much, but i can tell you that when we have flooding damaging and threatening the livelihoods of people right here in the Third District, it is absolutely something that people should know i am focusing on. I have been proud to cannot only vote to get us back into the paris climate accord, but also to make sure that we are helping our businesses, you know, wind energy and renewables are absolutely something that the market is deciding we are moving toward. We need to incentivize that movement. Wind energy is something that we have potential for an kansas. And we need to make sure that utility bills are coming down. I voted to do that for low income families. And you are not going to get the right approach from my opponent on this. Nick how would your approach be different . Amanda i will approach it from the perspective of energy in this country, Energy Security, where people are feeling the pain around it. Joe biden and democrats in congress have basically decimated our energy sector. Joe biden sent a message, he pushed out an agenda for which of country was not prepared, and as a result we have seen Higher Energy prices. Im a proponent for increasing gas and Oil Production in the country. People at the pump, the prices, they are up. And we are having a lot of pain in diesel. When you talk about supply chain, and you Start Talking about inflation and at the cost of goods, diesel is driving that up. I want to make an additional comment, in addition for being for more domestic oil and Gas Production, i want to protect the environment, too. I care about it, but the most important step we can take is increasing Nuclear Capacity in this country. Nick 30 seconds to rebut. Sharice thank you. Yeah, lets talk about Energy Security. I have already voted in ways that would decrease our reliance on foreign oil. I was one of the people that pushed back against my own party and encouraged at the president to go back to using some of the refineries that went offline during the pandemic. And, look, we need somebody from the Third District who is going to do what is right and stand up to whichever party they are from when necessary. Nick last word . Amanda once again, most people would say in this community that Energy Security is a mess right now. I will go back to people who are paying a lot more money for inflation, they know that the cost of diesel in this country, because joe biden sent a message to investors at that you should not be investing in domestic oil and Gas Production, it has been destructive for our country. One more point, Nuclear Capacity. We have a Nuclear Plant and people in the district who live and work there. Nick we are out of time. Now to call you. To kyle. Kyle regarding cost and inflation. Mortgage rates are going up, rent prices as well. What role should Congress Play to make housing more affordable . Nick amanda . Amanda i have heard about housing from people in the district. Again, the price of everything is going up right now. It is not just housing. People are feeling the pain across the board because of poor decisions made by washington, d. C. And by joe biden and that miss davids has supported. We need problemsolving in washington, d. C. Right now. One of the reasons when we are talking about new housing, we are getting back to transporting goods and the cost of energy, which is a really big problem. Every single time i ask any business in any industry, why are you having issues right now, it all goes back ultimately to the cost of energy. Nick amanda, thank you. Sharice davids, what is your fix for Affordable Housing . Sharice actually, this is something that i know folks have been struggling with and things have been really hard. Especially coming out of the pandemic, where people were either laid off or unable to work. And from the federal perspective, i think that we absolutely need to make sure that, one, people can afford, not just mortgage or rent, but also their utilities. Sometimes the difference between making a rent payment or your mortgage is can you afford the gas or electricity bill. That is why when i have a chance to make sure that people who are struggling right now can make their homes more energyefficient or landlords can do that, get those utility bills down and make everything more affordable across the board, that is what we need to work on. Nick your rebuttal . Amanda on the cost of energy, the other thing i have consistently heard from people who work in housing is at they are having a hard time finding workers. Over the last four years, the last two years, under a democratic administration, there has been a focus on not encouraging work in this country. We need to go back to incentivizing and encouraging people to get back into the workforce. Our Workforce Shortage is roughly about 11 million jobs that are unfilled. Its a real problem. Nick do you want to respond . Sharice i am not sure. Im just not sure who my opponent thinks is not encouraging people to get jobs or get into the workforce. We have done everything we can in my office to make sure that we are supporting our local Community Colleges for many reasons, but for some it includes people wanting to get into the trade into the technical areas. I think the federal government needs to make those opportunities available to everybody. Nick covid barely registers any longer in Public Opinion polls. But obesity is up, diabetes and drugs and alcohol is increasing, as well as depression and mental illness. What is the single biggest policy change you would advocate for to improve the health of your constituents, Sharice Davids . Sharice thank you. You know, i think that absolutely you just named a litany of things that people are really struggling with, from mental health, which is a huge priority in my office i want to make sure people have access to health care services. Johnson county, Franklin County and miami county, these guys, i know there are people doing that work in our counties. And i have been there to support them. And i also think that it is really important for us to make health care more affordable. People deserve access to Quality Health care. It the republican has tried to dismantle it at every turn, the access. And i am really proud we were able to finally put a cap on insulin at 30 a month for our seniors. And that outofpocket expenses for seniors. Because we cannot keep taking all of these things away from people and expecting that they will be able to stay healthy. Nick what is the number one change you would make in health care . Amanda as you know, i have spent a vast majority of my career working in health care. My work has been focused on cutting cost, making it more affordable, and as i noted, helping people to be healthier. I think there are many changes we can make in this country that has to deal with the cost of medical care and Prescription Drugs. We need to, when we look at risk medical care, grant block money to go back to the federal government because the states know how to handle that. The best example i have seen are instances where the providers themselves make a decision to create health plans. One more comment on Prescription Drugs. I agree that cms should be negotiating on push kitchen drug price, but where the democrats fell short, having worked for an innovation company, is when you try to price control, you try to stack taxes you stack taxes on the back of Innovation Companies and your discouraging innovation ultimately. Nick 30 seconds to rebut. Sharice thank you. Medicare is literally the largest purchaser of risks and drugs in this country. If we want to talk about the market deciding, absolutely the federal government should be negotiating Prescription Drug prices. And if im surprised my opponent thinks that the state is best situated to make these decisions. Th legislature in kansase, which was republican led, extended medicaid and it was Sam Brownback that vito did that. Nick last word. Amanda i will, on the push kitchen drug prices because it is an important topic for seniors. I did a lot of negotiating in my career on behalf of employers, so i believe in negotiation. At the federal government does have responsibilities to medicare, which is my second point. Where i have concerns for our seniors, having worked for an innovation company, when you start to try to tax and add significant regulation on the backs of business, they will make hard decisions. And those included less innovation, less investment. Nick thank you. Lisa rodriguez has a new question. Lisa which action by the Biden Administration do you support the most, and which one do you oppose the most . Nick Amanda Adkins . Amanda we just talked about part of it, but i only partially supported it. I spend more than 15 years of my career in health care, despite what miss davids shared in her deceptive ads. I spent time working on affordability in health care, and i do think that Prescription Drugs is one area where we can come together, but not in the words of one journalist in the middle of the debate, if we take Vito Corleone style tactics and we try to negotiate all of the prices across america, like, we need to negotiate for medicare, but we need to protect innovation in this country. Our seniors deserve lifesaving drugs, as we move into the future and advance medical care. I am concerned about innovation and pushing back. Sharice davids . Sharice can you repeat the question . Lisa which action by the Biden Administration do you support the most and oppose the most . Sharice Everybody Knows i am an infrastructure nerd and i want to talk about the infrastructure, but i will actually talk about the negotiations that happened where we were finally able to get medicare, the authority to negotiate Prescription Drug prices and finally able to put in outofpocket cap for our seniors for their Prescription Drugs. And we were able to make sure that people who need insulin, which does not need to be innovated, so it should be available to everybody, we put a cap on that 30 a month. And i think that the second part going to the point i will have to point i already said i am an army brat. Knowing that we lost those numbers in afghanistan was heartbreaking to watch. And it is something that i think that was poorly executed and poorly planned. And something i was very frustrated and upset about. Nick Amanda Adkins . Amanda i would agree that the withdrawal was absolutely botched and a failure. It was botched and another example of a failure by the bite in administration. Service members who lost their lives, the equipment left behind, and other people who were there surveying us, the in country americans are left behind for a long time. Americans deserve better. Our commanderinchief has not done a good job, and you consistently have voted with him 100 of the time. Nick the last word goes to Sharice Davids. Sharice what i have consistently done is supported and pushed forward bipartisan bills, 70 of my bills have been bipartisan. And im just really disappointed to hear my opponent continue to regurgitate National Republican talking points. Nick kyle, last question from the Shawnee Mission post. Kyle we have watched russias unjustified attack against ukraine continue, and Vladimir Putin has nodded to the possibility of using Nuclear Weapons during the course of this. As a member of congress, you might be posed with a decision on how the country responds if this should to happen. How should we respond if russia uses Nuclear Weapons in ukraine . Nick Sharice Davids . Sharice i already talked about this a little bit, but i think that it is worth repeating that i have been heartbroken watching what is happening over in ukraine. And also, that we have i have been in the room, heard it directly from president zelenskyy on the support that they need. A the deployment of a Nuclear Weapon is the worst case scenario, and that is why we are doing everything we can in supporting the ukrainian people when we can, so that we never have to even address this. But i will always listen to and it looked to our military leadership when it comes to making decisions of national security. Nick Amanda Adkins . Amanda on ukraine, how disappointed are the American People that in many ways joe bidens failed Foreign Policy has led to this tragedy. The reason i say this is Everybody Knows that previously when he made the decision to move u. S. Energy security and oil and Gas Production away from russia, russia was taking money from us and our allies in europe, money that has been fed into the war. It is a sad situation. I have publicly said i support funding for ukraine in the situation we are in. My brotherinlaw is a colonel in the u. S. Army and has been directly involved in some of the supply in support going over to ukraine. I agree that we need to listen to military leaders, but our Foreign Policy is in shambles and not in a great place. We need to look for a Strategic Partnership as we move into the future. Sharice davids would you like a chance nick Sharice Davids, would you like a chance to rebut . Sharice absolutely, partly because i have been so concerned about my opponent again embry seen the more extreme voices of the republican party. And endorsement from mike pompeo, who praised the Vladimir Putin, even after the unprovoked and aggressive invasion of a democratic sovereign state i think that is completely unacceptable. Nick last word . Amanda mike pompeo is a friend. I honor that relationship. I think he was one of the greatest secretarys we have seen. We was head of his class at west point, a businessman, and very principled. Andy had huge accomplishments during his time, especially in the middle east. So i think that you are wrong, i guess you do not identify strong leaders because you cite joe biden is a really good one. Nick we will give each of you a chance to make your case to voters. Your time starts now, Amanda Adkins. Amanda i appreciate being here today. I have lived in this community for a long time and i come into this i made the decision to run because i asked people of the simple question, are you better off today . As i have said, we know that the people are not better off today. The decisions made have resulted in economic devastation in this country including record levels of inflation. And an 8,700 hit the households in this community. We are heading into a recession. And it is the result of some of the votes made by miss davids, including the American Rescue plan, and and they were warned it would go down in history as one of the worst decisions made, yet here we are at. Im a business leader. I have worked in health care. I know this community. Im Amanda Adkins. I have solutions for this community. I am a problem solver. And i ask for your vote. Nick Sharice Davids, your 60 seconds starts now. Sharice i want to start by acknowledging that this has been a rough time over the last few years. And that we are having these tough conversations and working together to make progress for kansas. And it is those tough conversations and working together regardless of party. Its why we were chosen over every other district in the country by panasonic, why federal dollars are coming to our state to invest in infrastructure purity will not get that bipartisan approach from my opponent. She has aligned herself with extreme politicians who are looking to decimate Social Security and medicare, supports a total ban on abortion with no exceptions, not for rape or incest. Look, i have been and i will continue to be ready to work with anyone if it means progress for kansas, because i want our children to have the same opportunities i had. Im Sharice Davids and i would be proud to earn your vote. Nick who should represent this district for the next two years in congress, Sharice Davids or Amanda Adkins . Only you will decide.
