In the words of our president barack obama one year ago, even when our heart aches, we summoned the strength that maybe we did not even know we have. To carry on and we finished the race. And we dod the race that because of who we are. We do that because we know that someone around the bend, a stranger, has a cup of water or use our spirits. Smile, just the when we think we have hit a wall, there will be someone there to cheer us on and pick us up if we fall. This day next year on a third monday, the world will return to tos dutiful American City run harder than ever to cheer louder than before for the 118th maritime marathon and bet on it. Here we are one year later. We are all boston strong. See you on monday. Hello. Good afternoon. Majorar ago my husband adam davis had just returned from afghanistan where he was fighting the war on terror, on injured. We took a long walk into sunny boston. In a matter of seconds our world was changed forever. It is difficult to believe it has only been one year. Weeks. S like only a few we have a long road yet to walk. I stand here today as a proud bostonian. Adam and i just moved to boston three short years ago. The city has stood by us. Supported us. Help us heal. Held each other in the face of terror. We grieved in the face of tremendous loss. We grew in the face of adversity. Is notvivor Community Something any of us have chosen to be a part of. We are just that, a community. There were many moments we could have not made it through had it not been for one another. And providing a shoulder to cry on, a warm embrace, and a hand to hold in a crowd. We know just by eye contact with the other is feeling. I am thankful for our friendship. I look back on this past year, i think about the lessons we have learned and that had to relearn, that no milestone is too small to celebrate, even walking into a nonhandicapped act and for the first time doing a happy dance. It is the little things. That moods are contagious. Our community, our city, our surgeons, onders, our our physical and mental us fail. S will not let our devotion to strength is why we stand here today. I have learned it is ok to not be ok. We still have to let ourselves grieve. We can stay in bed even. Or a few days it is the boston strong attitude that gets us back out. We cannot find the string to do it ourselves, we have those around us that lift us back up. My wish if i were allowed to grant one is that we use this day not as just a day of remembrance but a day of action. I wish that everyone who is facing adversity today would have the support we have had. If anyone is wondering what they can do, what you can do, i would answer, look around. Neede in your community your support. They need your patience. They need your time in dealing with similar situations such as ours. Let april 15 be a day when we all Work Together to make this world a better place. The biggest lesson of all the lessons that i have learned over this past year is that something in your life, in anyones life, can go horrifically, terribly wrong in a matter of seconds. Make every us to second count. Believe me. They do. Thank you. [applause] ive heard it said lifepeople come into our somethingon, brining we must learn lead to those who if we letst to grow them and we help them in return well, i dont know if ive true but i know im who i am today because i knew you orbit, comet pulled from as it passes the sun like a stream that meets the boulder halfway through the wood who can say five then change for the better . Because i knew you i have been changed for good it well may be that we may never meet again in this lifetime so let me say before we part is here because i learned it from you youll be with me like a hamper and all my heart handprint on my heart how our storyter ends, i know you have rewritten my because you are my friend like a ship blown from the harbor like you see jobs from a skype bird halfway through the wood i dont know if ive been changed for the better i do believe i have been changed for the better and because i knew you because i knew you because i knew you i have been changed for good [applause] as it says in the book of james, the testing of our faith produces for surveillance perseverance. We learned that in the past have felt it,s seen it, share it appeared for the families who lost loved ones, for those recovering from injury of every kind, it is what life is all about now. It is about dancing again after losing a leg. It is about starting a marriage forged and tragedy. It is about learning early on to care for family and friends. The testing of our faith creates perseverance. Is there a tougher test of faith for a parent than the loss of a child . Or sync your child badly hurt while you fight pain and injury yourself . Seeing your child badly hurt what you fight pain and injury yourself . Remembrance, i start at the heart of the community where i was a kid. Other day i came across some photos from a Neighborhood Party a few years back. One picture stopped me cold. There i was with some friends, my arm around a little way, holding him close. He was wearing a smile that could light a deadly part fenway park. Little boy was Martin Richard. His parents set a date is not passed we do not cry over the loss of martin. We also laugh and think about him. It feels the right way to remember a little boy with in a few days, the Little League will open their season. Martin later in that league with enthusiasm and sheer joy. League, coach in that watching kids like martin gained skills and competence and understanding the importance of never giving up also martins older brother henry gets that. He is an exceptional student, good athlete, a great kid. Always eager to help. He is the kind of kid you want your kids to be friends with. So is his sister, jane. Now they are teaching us a thing or two about never giving up. By the way, you didnt hear from me, the james is back laying basketball again. [applause] martin would have loved that. Way he saw the world, anything was possible will stop all across our city, we are learning that. Were learning not just perseverance, but resilience. Zillions rooted in hope. We may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. We endure the night violence came to our city, to boylston street, and it felt like we knew everyone who was hurt all stop everyone who was suffering. We heard also will stop that heard follows earlier routes, down the redline in dorchester, up 93 through somerville and on Memorial Drive to mrt. Our grief draws a painful map. We look to our First Responders who are always our beacon of hope, courage and hard. We saw police officers, firefighters and emts running toward danger as they always do, as they always will. We saw medical staff and volunteers tending to the injured. We saw businesses on boylston street sheltering the traumatized. And our Public Employees from the city of boston russian rushing to find resources. We saw people who had come to cheer on the others and who came running to save the lives of perfect strangers. As the day went on and we theyed what they lost, told us the story of our city. Lingzi lu was drawn here from halfway around the world to study, learn and explore. Was always thel last to leave work, but she was always there when her grandmother needed her. What helier was doing always wanted to do, building a career as a police officer, devoted to community. Martin richard was a little neighborhood kid with a big smile and even bigger heart. Together, they showed us the quality of our city that will carry us through. Survivors, we bore witness to your experience. We gain strength from your current edge and we feel hope for our kurt for our future. We came together as a city. Within 24 hours, leaders in government, business and philanthropy formed the one fund. Thousands of people gathered in dorchester filling garvey park with candles and prayers. Help came from across the world. People reached out to us in solidarity, offering messages of healing and hope. Next week thousands of runners and millions of our friends from around the world will come to boston. The 118th Boston Marathon will be a living breathing celebration of our cities resilience. We still hurt. We hurt from trauma, we hurt from grief, we hurt from loss. We hurt whenever violent hits our streets anywhere in our city and our kids become victims. We hurt now as we mourn the loss of two of our firefighters in a fire. Just last week, another hero lost, a young First Responders who carry some of you to safety. This doesnt little more to shake the hands of the doctors and nurses who stop the bleeding, savior lives. Moment, the world is a better place. I know many of you do not feel like you are. You should go to get through the good days, the bad. I know. So many of you have told me about this year. Your first birthday without your beloved son. Just last week, another hero lost, a young Boston Police officer injured at the scene in watertown a year ago was honored for his bravery and is suddenly gone. We hurt when brave First Responders you that theyre all. Weeping may adore for a night, but joy comes in the morning. After a dark night and a bitter winter, spring is here, the snow is gone and the red sox are back, and in a week marathoners will be too, running for martin, for family, for friends, for boston, for america. We are never going to be the same, we are stronger than ever. Weve been tested and tested again. We face these hertz with a new understanding of our strength. We have survived the dark night to survive and face the new day. We can believe that anything is possible. Then we work our hearts out to prove it. This is boston, the city of courage and champion for the city of hope, and the city of heart. God bless you, god bless the city of boston, and god bless the United States of america. [applause] [applause] [applause] mr. Vice president , ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, none of us at this podium could possibly add to the testimony of the survivors who have spoken today. Im just glad to be here with all of you. Im glad to join in the remembrance of krystle campbell, and lingzi lu, and Martin William richard, and sean a. Collier. Some here and some not yet ready to be here who still hurt from this tragedy and yet inspire us with their determination. Chance tofor the honor and thank again the First Responders and medical fashion rules and volunteers who cared for and comforted those hurt will stop those hurt. The lawenforcement officials who meticulously and methodically worked to solve this crime and find the killers. Im glad to be here with mayor menino, mayor walsh and the Many Political leaders who put their emphasis on leader and not political throughout that week. Im glad to have this tragedy behind, and the next marathon is upon us. Im glad especially to share in the timeless grace of our communitys response to this crisis. Because as i see it, boston strong is about the triumph of community itself. Over and over again these last several years and we have emphasized the importance of building community. Seeing our stake in our neighbors strength and struggles as well as our own. Sustaining such sentiment is tough in the face of the crushing cynicism so prevalent in modern culture. Me, the things we witness in the aftermath of that vicious attack last year and i submit we are here today to celebrate is precisely that sense of community, that enduring and transcendent display you and so many others showed last year of kindness and grace will stop there are no strangers here. In the days and weeks of the marathon last year, we are reminded how few degrees of separation there are between us. I think of the young lawyer on my own staff who finished the route on boylston street equidistant between the first and second blast or the one who finished just before the explosion because their children needed a nap, or the friend who didnt. Doctors and at the cvs i met on the third shift a year ago caring for the injured. Our daughter catherine was walking toward boylston street when the first bomb went off. I carry in my pocket today the photograph of Martin Richard holding a Campaign Sign for me when he was three years old. He got around, mr. Mayor. [laughter] here. Are no strangers the day after the bombings, i visited with karen rand, her boyfriend and his brother in the hospital as she waited to learn whether doctors could save her leg. Toid what i could do encourage and support her and she reminded me we had met two summers before on shelter island. Last summer, when the street in chicago where i was born and raised was renamed for me, who should come rolling up in her wheelchair to support me but the same karen rand. There are no strangers here. We are not strangers. We are all connected to each other, to events beyond our control, to a common destiny. We share the same fears, the same hopes, the same community. Anare all caught in Inescapable Network of mutuality, dr. King used to say, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects one indirectly. We are not strangers. We are in the end one community. I hope we hold tight to that. I hope as we remember the dead injured, wee the remember community. The courage of the First Responders that we remember community. Medicals we thank the team and public officials, we remember community because all enduringo an remembrance of the power of common cause and working together and turning to each other when we could have easily turned on each other. Indeed, the power of love itself. That is what a community is. Proud be partm so of this. God was you all. God bless you all. [applause] rex thank you. Thank you very much.
