Cable Television Companies and is brought to you today by your cable or satellite provider. All month, we are featuring our studentcam video competition. This year, students told us the most urgent issue for the new president and congress. Our second prize High School Winner is michaela edwards, a student at jenks high school. Her documentary on animal farming, it is entitled behind the bite. Take a look. This is a chicken sandwich. Which you can get from here, supposedly comes from a place like this, and is ultimately cheaper than anything you can get there. I dont think i could really tell you what i am eating or where it came from. And im not just talking about the sandwich. Fee labels like cage cage free and grass fed on products in the store even mean . Eating is a vital element to survival. How can we not Pay Attention to what we are putting into our mouse . I guess the question is, what are we eating . Or better yet, what lies are we being fed . Let us start with the sandwich and go behind the bun to find out. First, we need to find out where the chicken on our sandwich has come from. The answer is a concentrated animal feeding operation. You can put animals in a two small pen. You have animals confined for a purpose. After further research, for poultry, a small now, i a large is well over 200,000. Now, i cannot help but wonder, with so many animals in such a small consigned unsanitary space, how are they all staying healthy . That answer is antibiotics. The scenario where we raise livestock without antibiotics would result in the suffering and illness and death of those animals. What is a practice that goes on widely is to put antibiotics into the feed of animals to enhance the growth of animals to you have animals that are bigger, with more meat, that has little to do with them being sick. Are they used to prevent the spread of elements . What other affects do they have . Since there are two sides to the story, i decided to travel near and far. A far bigger problem is the antibiotics given to animals, and more and more superbugs result. Bacteria that is really resistant to all nonantibiotics. Superbugs are also known as drugresistant bacteria. This means that the bacteria inside of us are no longer affected by antibiotics and other drugs. Drugresistant bacteria is one of the most Serious Public Health issues that we face today. They cause tens of thousands of deaths. Millions of illnesses. And that is just in the United States. The numbers are sure to climb and lets would take coordinated action. It is a big problem. There is also the opinion that it is mostly the overuse of antibiotics that protect the true source of resistance he. Studies by the World Health Organization has revealed that 75 of the antibiotics sold in the United States are used for agricultural production. The majority of antibiotic resistance correlates to the production of meat. The center of Disease Control and prevention estimates that 2 Million People are becoming infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria every year and of those 23,000 died with those numbers growing. Tragic numbers like that, you think congress and the president would take action. Last year, the white house unveiled its National Action plan for combating antibiotic resistant bacteria which sets forth ambitious goals. That National Action plan turned out to be very inactive. It was too loose and optional for companies in the Agricultural Industry. Nothing has really changed. I have been a vegetarian for five years so i am safe for from antibiotic resistant the. It is not through eating the meat that you have the problem. It is that the bacteria in the environment in general just become resistant to those antibiotics. The environment being soil, plants, runoff water transportation of animals and , other surrounding factors that allow these antibiotics to spread even more quickly. To avoid support for the end antibiotics, the should we just be eating cage , free, grass fed organic products . Take cage free. My hands hens are cage free that i can also be cage free in a layered house with 30,000 hens. It merely means that my hands are not in a one foot by what about grass fed . Every calf born is out in the grass up until the last 6090 days of their life. That is where 90 of the beef has been put into a feedlot. Is there any cost difference because of these labels . After comparing cartons of eggs, it is obvious the label was upping the price. Same thing goes for grass fed milk product and organic labels. We are buying poorer quality products and paying more for them and unknowingly continuing our support for these practices. It seems like we have heard problem after problem. What is the solution . Here is a start. One, Congress Needs to adjust the confinement and health regulations. Starting with the urgency to ban antibiotic usage among the Agricultural Industry because of its negative effects on the Public Health and the environment as a whole. As far as labeling goes, we are the ones buying into this. What you really need to do is compare food labels. You need to educate yourself on what you need to be eating. In addition to this, the fda needs to crack down on its standards and allow for more fair and accurate labeling of
