Jon hey, everybody, welcome to the daily show, my name is jon stewart. Good one tonight, my guest dr. Mar Martin Blaser here to tell us how we are all going to die from formerly treatable diseases. laughter speaking of medieval scourges that should be he rad cade, horrible goingon in nigeria. Nearly three weeks ago in Northern Nigeria high school girls, possibly more than 200 of them, were kidnapped from their school in a remote village. Jon what kind of evil satanic individual would stoop to such inhuman depths. The attackers are believed to be members of boko haram, a militant al qaeda inspired group that wants its own Islamic State in Northern Nigeria. Religious satanic people. Jon does it not say in the karan, kidnap the innocent girls for they are sully oh t doesnt say that, right, thats right. But you know what, [bleep]. The New York Times today read abduction of girls an act even al qaeda can condone. Jon wow. You know theres not a lot of times you will get a jewish guy to go i agree with al qaeda. But wow. So the Nigerian Group boko haram over al qaeda, the group that never saw something full of civilians it didnt want to blow up as saying, its not an option. Who is the nigerian maniac who has caused al qaeda to complain that he is the smirch besmirching their good name. Nigeria laughter jon i think i just figured out what i want ironman 4 to be about. laughter applause holy crap. By the way, that thing that he shekau was waving is not as you would assume drug paraphernalia, it is walled a miswak, a twig favored by the prophet mohammed and still popular in many parts of the muslim world. Shekau is using one because even if you are a soulless, forest dwelling lunatic, you shouldnt neglect your gums. laughter his parents taught him good oral hygiene and then stopped teaching him. laughter nigeria, the most populous country in africa, one of the largest economies in africa must be blowing out all the stops to get these guys. The Nigerian Government was trying to sweep this whole thing under the rug for the longest time. Jon really . How big are nigerian rugs . laughter because i can see sweeping mineral rights corruption under the rug, but hundreds of missing girls, were going to need a bigger rug. Many niger yens have sharply criticized their president for his slow response. Nigerias president rejected International Help for weeks. With three weeks before president Goodluck Jonathan said anything about the kidnapping publicly. Jon just want to be clear. Goodluck jonathan is is the nigerian president s actual name. laughter they are not just saying the president of a corrupt divided country overrun with nut bag terrorists who have also infiltrated your military good did luck, jonathan, thats not it his actual name. Not a modifier. So the president of nigeria took three weeks to speak publicly about one of the most horrifying atrocities any country could suffer. Why is he telling us that. The abductions in nigeria were unable to but the story did not gain traction online until april 23rd. When two nigerians tweeted bring back our daughters. Within days a new slogan bring back our girls was being shared around the world. Jon i owe twitter an apology. Not just for casual laughter and the reason nigeria turned down any International Assistance but now Intelligence Experts in a number of countries including the u. S. Are now assisting in the search for these girls. British and french troops. Israel is sending troops. The chinese are also lending. There is a Huge International effort. Jon it cannot force a crazy person to do something. But it can shame a less crazy person into not doing nothing while apparently driving a medium crazy person crazier. Apparently there is a twitter, what dow call, a handle, mrs. Obama looking sad. Is that not pathetic. What the what the hell message does that send it is just unbelievable the. The sad thing here is the low information crowd puddling around out on twitter is going to think we are doing something. At least she is trying, mr. Limbaugh, what are you doing, at least mrs. Obama cares, at least they are trying to get them back. Jon he seems nice. You know what though, rush, youre right. Sometimes the world has to choose sides. Lets hear our choices. Uhhuh, so thats mu lalaious aef expressing solidarity with the victims. What is our other choice, all right, that is so thats our choice, mulala or rush, the quivering rage heap who is app parently desperately trying to ding distinguish any remaining molecule of humanity that mate still remain in the chernobyl superesq cleanup site that was his soul applause jon who should we go with. Who should we choose, i dont know why dont we tweet our votes to [bleep [bleep]yourush. But now but now that boko haram maas plaus. Jon lets go to the real villain boko haram. Now that boko haram has the worlds attention, what is your message . Stephen so more proceeds than poetry, really. laughter sounds like a punk bajd. All right, you guys are trying to so hard to convince everybody that you are such bad asses but all you have sea done with this kidnapping is highlight who the real bad asses are, the kids you kidnapped. Compared to a teenager who knows that her desire for an education could get her dragged no a snake infested jungle, be sold as a bribe by some demented stick chewing cartoon villain still gets up and goes to class every day, fully aware of that danger, compared to their courage, i say boko haram is a bunch of little girls. And you know what, you dont and you know what, you dont deserve that [ male announcer ] there is no substitute for experience. For what reality teaches you firsthand. But we know youve been thinking about it, too. So were always trying to make it even better. Thats why we added some ingredients and took others out, making this our best bread yet. Bread is on the rise at subway. Jon well welcome back to the show. Were going lighten things up. Were going to get it going, lighten up with our new segment wow did not see that coming. First up, michael sam becomes the first openly gay player drafted by an nfl team on saturday. Truly a landmark moment for the nfl, an amazing moment for the Gay Community and boy, is he close to his agent. He really just theres that is his boyfriend . What an incredible accomplishment. I just know the nfl a place where men hug each other professionally will welcome him with open arms. The first openly gay player drafted by the nfl kissed his boyfriend, sparking some hateful tweets from former houston textan and new york giant derek ward, for him to do that on national tv is disgusting. Man, you got little kids looking at the draft. Yes, god forbid kids look on the tv and see two men who clearly love cake, two men who cannot get enough sweet, sweet cake. laughter oh no. Two dudes filling each others mouths. laughter with cake. laughter jon the next item i totally did not see comingment an old crazy apologizing for hate speech. Donald sterling speaking out for the first time. Sterling says his own words leave him bewildered. And hes not a racist. I dont even know how i could say words like that. And im so sorry. And im so apologetic. Jon Donald Sterling taking back his words of intolerance, as well as reminding us what the cow ardly lion looks like without makeup. Im sorry, i shouldnt do that its a mean thing to say. He admitted he was at fault and its time we put this awful business behind us. Im apologizing and im asking for forgiveness. Am i entitled to one mistake, after 35 years. Jon well its not one mistake. There are you are already the subject of what was at the time the largest discrimination lawsuit settlement in u. S. History where you were accused of saying black people smell bad. And my guess is that is your one mistake chip. Or was that more of a snafu, a booboo perhaps. But at least youre taking responsibility now. Youre saying you were set up. Well, yes, i was baited. Its not the way i talk. I dont talk about people for one thing, ever. I talk about ideas and other things. But i dont talk about people. Jon i mean laughter heres an idea that i have been kick around lately. What if what if had two water fountains instead of one. Wait, wait, i got one. An idea, i just came up with this on the fly. I came up with this, you know how crosses are hard to see at night. What if we lit them up. I have a great idea for a football team, no its too much. Let me get this straight, if you ares not responsible for the horrible things that come out of your mouth, who is . I dont know why the girl had me say those things. Jon i dont know why the girl had me say those i was just reading a part in a new its a new sitcom [bleep] my old racist sugar daddy laughter well now that you have definitely shifted all of the blame on to this woman and painted yourself as an innocent butterscotch loving grandpa pa, im sure from now on you will be a little more careful. The only one that i know that i talk to is magic johnson. He is a person he what am i going to say. Has he done everything he can do to help minorities . I dont think so. Jon i love that moment where sterling is clearly thinking should i Say Something awful again . laughter you know what, why not . What the hell, [bleep] magic johnson. applause heres what is so crazy about this guy. Im starting to think there is a whole secretly recording Donald Sterling and leaking to the media thing is an enormous waste of time because clearly you can put him in front of cameras where he can see them with lots of lights and go, so, whats on your mind . laughter and let the what is performance . 0 to 60 . Or 60 to 0 . How a car performs in a quartermile . Or a quartercentury . Is performance about the joy of driving . Or the importance. Of surviving . To us, performance is not about doing one thing well. It is about doing everything well. Because in the end. Everything matters. Mercedesbenz. The best or nothing. Missing microbes this is something that we have heard about for some time. But theres apparently a good deal of Science Behind the idea that i shouldnt be taking dedebecause im tired. What is the overuse of antibiotics, what has been happening . Antibiotics are miraculous. They have saved so many lives. But weve been using them more and more and more. And we have reached the point where maybe were doing more harm than good. Jon how do we know . Because its very difficult for people to understand that doing something, you see the same thing with the antivaccine crowd. They dont understand that their behavior is effecting a much larger group because its not immediate and it doesnt affect them. Well, takeant antibiotics has a lot of affects. One of them is like the vaccines, if you take antibiotics it makes all the bacteria in the world resistant t makes it harder for everybody else. But what i am especially concerned about is the fact that antibiotics especially for Young Children is making them more susceptible to all these diseases that have been rising, diabetes, obese et, allergies, food allergiesment. Jon thats the part i dont understand so lets say my daughter gets strep throat. Has a swab in her mouth, comes up positive. You are suggesting that that might actually be a real strep infection but it just may be that there is a colonization of strep not causing the infection. She is we know that every winter 20 of the kids are carrying strep. In the summer it goes down to 10 . So if you randomly check the throat of kids, 20 of them are going to be positive. But we dont know if that is what is causing her infection. Jon i would not like to have the job to randomly check kids throats because that is, that is the thing in the doctor where you go, you can hold her arm and dow this. When we do that, you know, you mention obesity, allergies, asthma. To me if those are not bacterial infections, how is it that using antibiotics would have any effect on an allergy. Because of the human microbiome. Because most of the cells in our body are bacteria. And weve had it since we were born and our mothers gave its to us and their mothers. And theyre doing important jobs for us. Jon are you right, its 10 to 1, that we are outnumbered in our own body cellularly 10 to 1 by bacteria. And theyre helping us, training our immune system, helping us digest food, making vitamins for us. So we need them. Theyre good for us. And if we keep piling on the antibiotics than we are suppressing them. And some of them are going away, probably for good. Jon cant we just in the way that you target Cancer Treatment is very similar, chemo kills everybody. Cancer cells but also all the healthy cells. Isnt there some way that the antibiotics can be used to kill the strep but there can be some way of rejuvenating the microbiomes that that was doing all those other jobs . Well, thats what we need to do. We need to make narrow spectrum antibiotics. We have Broad Spectrum that attack everything. But we have the science that we could develop narrow spectrum antibiotics that will just target the one organism, maybe its strep, maybe its a different organism but then we need to diagnose it so somebody going to a doctor will say you have a virus, you have a bacteria. If you have a bacteria, which one is it. Isnt this where the genome type project will go on, because finding the genetic makeup of these bacteria, wont that allow us to target these things more specifically. Yeah, but we have so much genomic information, we can harness that to make better medicine. Jon okay, lets do that. Yeah. So we have to right now antibiotics seem to be very inexpensive. And doctors visits are very inexpensive. But if were not doing the right thing then ultimately it will cost us much more. Who would do the thing youre talking about, come up with the targeted is that drug companies, is that it can only on done through the cdc . Like who would do that, would you do it, can i ask you to do it now in front of us . How is it that we take that on . Thats what we need taxes for. Thats our tax dollars, why we need taxes to build the roads that everybody uses. We need to develop the drugs that our kids and our grandkids are going to use so that these epidemics can be stopped. Jon lets say so could there be ayman mann project, is that the catchall for these types of, you know, were going to put us on the moon. Some would suggest in ten years s that a realistic goal. I think it is. We need both diagnostics and narrow spectrum agents. And we have to change the economic base of how we assess illness in kids and how we treat kids, how we pay doctors so that we really value that more. Jon when you threw in that last part, that makes me feel like oh o that will never get done. But the science part of it feels like it could. But the systems end of it feels like its in its much more recalcitrant than everything else, much harder to move. It is hard to move. But thats why i wrote the book. Jon this book laughter applause very, very interesting. So youre optimistic. Yes. Jon and you dont mind that im still going to take antibiotics and use purel. Of course thats your decision. Jon already made. Missing microbes is on the book shelves now, fascinating stuff, thank you, sir. Doctor, nice to see you. [ male announcer ] ode to the subway chicken bacon ranch melt.
