Whee i missed you so much you dont know what it is like out there. Living all by myself. Nobody to applaud every stupid little bleep you do [ cheers and applause ] i have to tell you, i am so excited to be back. I learned an awful lot this summer. One, i learned i have the bard of a 90yearold prospector. I learned that i am western. Because for all that i appreciated and learned about the culture that i was immersed in, boy, i am western. In all its glorious decadent imper tech shunls, i recall driving back to new york city thinking, hello dildo shop near a school. I learned something i already knew which is i truly have the finest staff and crew in all of television and i want to thank them. They have been incredible. [ cheers and applause ] i will say this. Here is Something Else i knew. I knew john oliver was incredibly talented and do great. What i didnt know is that john oliver has dimples you can lose yourself in. I would like to bring our the man of the summer, mr. John oliver. Mr. John oliver, ladies and gentlemen [ cheers and applause ] stewart john oliver nice job stewart i have to tell you, man, you did an unbelievable job and i was so i knew exactly how you would do. I was just so happy for you and happy for the show. You did a great job. Thanks. It was fun. It was a huge amount of fun. We had some really Great Stories to play with. The royal baby. You would have loved that. Stewart would have loved that. Punched a horse in the face. There were sharknados. Paula deen used the n word. We have a marching band in here. I forget why. Oh, and for some the reason Regis Philbin kissed me on the head. It was so much fun. I cant thank you enough. Remember your friend Anthony Weiner . Yes, yes how is he doing . I havent spoken with him in a while, . It is a good question. For a start, no one really calls him Anthony Weiner anymore. Stewart oh, go ahead, go ahead. They call him mr. Mayor is that what it is . Some sort of alter ego. He actually does, a very real alter ego. Yeah, yeah. He does have that. Stewart what is that . Dont make me say it. Stewart no. [ cheers and applause ] no, no, no. Stewart how ridiculous could bit . Well, let me tell you. It is carlos danger danger stewart why did that just happen . What was that . Listen, i cant wait to get going. What kind of fun story am i getting back to . Like a comptroller in new york that takes selfies of himself . Racial rage . Something terrible about Chinese People . What have you got lined up for today. After nearly two and a half years of civil war in syria, multiple reports of large chemical weapons attacks in 25 years, the white house is poised for action against president bashar alassad. Stewart good luck with that wait, wait, wait. Maybe we can still have some fun. The people of syria seem to be in a lot of danger. No, no, no, no, no. It does not work like that anyway you can have fun and it is great to have you back. One more thing. Crossfire returns next monday on cc cnn [ cheers and applause ] stewart welcome to the show i was very much hoping, that a big story would break during the commercial so we wouldnt have to talk about syria but that did not happen. Obviously it is a dark story but we do here a magic comedy show. You have to make the best of it so you know what . Here we go. I am johnny stews good time syria jamboree reminds me of a yoke. So saudi arabia, qatar and syria walk into a bar called america is not planning on bombing you tbar tender says, i dont think you should be in here, syria. After careful deliberation i have decided that United States should take military action against Syrian Regime targets. Stewart wow, america taking military action against the middle east regime. It is like i never left. So what brought the president to this decision. 50 tons of mustard gas in a turkey farm. Stewart actually that is the wrong president , the wrong president. And that is a different country. Leave kuwait or be driven out. Stewart okay. That is the same country, and family, but it is a slightly different war. Today we celebrate our Independence Day stewart that was a fictional president and to be fair, that war was pretty justified they have evidence that chemical weapons were used in that attack in syria two weeks ago. Blood and hair samples that have come to us, have tested positive for signatures of sarin. Stewart thats the one, thats the one we are talking about signatures of sarin, yeah. I assume that is different from the new fragrance of the same name. Signatures of sarin. Because love is blind now. Came back to the, came back to a dark, dark place. Now if memory serves, 100,000 syrians have already died during the conflict with president bashar alassad, already with no military intervention, intervention from the west, so why now . Daily show flashback clip to august 2012. We have been very clear to the assad regime but also to other players on the ground that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. Stewart you cant use chemicals to use your own people. You have to do it organically. America and the world wants that you only use locally homegrown ordinance. Now back in the early eighties when iraq used chemical weapons against iran and not only did we not attack them we supported iraq and still reserve the right to use the cluster bombs and mark 77 which is not, not filled with napalm, technically. So duo the fact we have no idea who would have control over these chemical weapons, remind us again why we have to do this . The danger is the more reluctant you are and the more deliberative you are, the danger is you can start looking weak. If they sense that strength is not there, that weakness has replaced it then they go their own way. Bullies and tyrants dont respect weakness. Stewart so we have to bomb syria because we are in seventh grade and the red line the red line that they crossed is actually a dick measuring ribbon. Why does holding back look like weakness . Doesnt it look like maturity. Like the guy picking on clark kent doesnt react although he could throw the guy into the sun. This is what is real weakness, clark kent laying waste to a town because someone called him a pussy. You know what else is weakness asking the advice from a parade of experts that got it wrong on iraq or as is known in cable, experts. I hope he acts in syria, i hope he acts in a much more vigorous and robust sense. The idea of demystifying what you are going to do for the enemy is mindless. I cant imagine what they are thinking. I wish we had intervened and he could have intervened a year ago two, years ago. Stewart hey, everybody, the idiot parade is in town shut the bleep up shut the bleep up shut the bleep up shut the bleep up shut the bleep up shut the bleep up schupp the bleep up stewart just wrote that song today. All right. Assad has crossed the line of what we peel is the appropriate way to kill people. So we have to send powerful message to the world. Chemical weapons will not be tolerated. We would not put boots on the ground. Instead our action would be designed to be limited in duration and scope. Stewart you are saying the only way to keep americas penis from looking small is to take a somewhat ineffective action purposefully designed to accomplish very little. We will call it operation just the tip. [ cheers and applause ] stewart by the way, operation just the tip one of Milton Bradleys least popular games. You butt in the shaft pretty sneaky we will be right stewart hey, welcome back. My guest tonight, he is the head of the u. N. Refugee agency in jordan based at the camp on the Syrian Border. Welcome to the show Andrew Harper how are you, sir . Thank you for being here. Thank you so much for coming in to join us. You do grim yet incredibly important work. Tell me, you know, we can argue all day about the politics of assad and the chemical weapons and should we intervene, should we not, there is no argument about the humanitarian disaster that has unfolded in this region and can you give us a brief update on that . Well, thanks, jon, also thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to talk because there has been so much discussion about the politics and so much discussion about the security, but what is continually forgotten in all of the conflicts is what is happening to the syrians. And today we have marked 2 million refugees having fled across the border into jordan, into turkey, into iraq, into lebanon. And this is the tragedy. On top of that you have 5 million, and these are numbers which no one can really comprehend because each one of these refugees, each one of these persons basically fled their homes and no one wants to flee their homes but they have fled because they have been bombed, they dont have act stoas services, and they have left with almost nothing, but often the clothes that are on their back, children often have had to flee their homes which are being bombed. Stewart and the amount of children and the amount of women is astonishing. Last week or two weeks ago we hit 1 million children having fled across the border and these numbers, are just numbers when they are reported in the press, but when you are actually working with refugees or working with the displaced then each one of these individuals needs help. Each one of these individuals needs protection and the first thing we have to say thank you, aas you did in the introduction, say thank you to the countries of the middle east that have, that are often struggling to provide support to their own population and communities but have a wonderful tradition and culture of providing support to those in the conflict. Jordan, for instance, population of 6 million. Stewart incredible. Hundreds of thousands of iraqis and 500,000, 600,000 syrians and they are the people that opened their doors, jordan has no oil. Stewart or water. Or water, right. And basically had to absorb what is basically an international disaster. Stewart right. It is not just a syrian disaster, it is not a regional disaster, this is an international disaster, and it is. Stewart . And the part of the u. N. You sort of understand is the more theatrical, you know, hugo chavez at the u. N. Giving a speech about sulfur or whatever that is or, you know, putting libya on the Human Rights Commission or those type of things. There is this whole other avenue of the u. N. , boots on the ground people like yourself doing this incredible day to day work effectively, efficiently, in a manner that is astonishing to see. I mean i want to show, here is a picture of the camp a year ago. Okay . This is desert in northern jordan. A desert. There is what the government gave to start with. And this is it, this is you can see it on the monitors. These are the folks coming over, these are some refugees last week into iraq, about 45,000 crossed into iraq last week. This is one week. Yeah. Stewart so this is the camp more recently, now. Yes. Stewart this is in the desert area. It is much larger than that. It is 120,000 people that live in there and here,. Tows give you a sense, though of some optimism within this, i want with to show you this picture of what they call the champs. Guys cooking chickens on the left and the human spirit that has created sort of some semblance of normalcy and commerce within this really difficult condition. Well, what we have seen is almost like when you, you have 2 Million People move act cross the border it basically equates to whole populations leaving. Stewart right. Towns, villages, we probably have half of the province of dara who now moved into jordan. Stewart yes, jordan had, in terms of dara, the dara valley and the area of northern jordan has basically the same sort of families. Yes. Stewart like east and west germany so they have absorbed 350,000 people just in the homes this camp is just for the poorest of the poor who didnt have those hospitalities. Well, jordan tried to avoid having camps and to its credit, like it never wanted to put people in camps. No one wants to be in a refugee camp, none of us would want to be in a refugee camp so for the first two, 300,000 people, it allowed people to come in and absorbed within the community but the communities could no longer absorb them because you have cities such as urban north of jordan, 200,000 more refugees arrived there. Stewart and these are workers and they want to people will hire them for lower and puts pressure on the economy. Let me ask you, will you stick around and talk a little bit more about it . Sure. Stewart i appreciate that. Is there anything people can do can they donate . Firstly, i also would like to say as i am in the states i would like to thank the u. S. People as well because they have been the biggest and most generous doe more to the humanitarian response and this is something we have under the radar it has been a fantastic contribution so far but what we have seen is we have been almost an overwhelming number of refugees cross the borders, we havent been overwhelmed we will not be overwhelmed but we need the money to continue to work. Stewart you can doe late in to the, this refugee effort in jordan and other places around the world, unrefugees. Org. Andrew harper, we will be htght stewart welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. I want to thank everybody here. I am so grateful to be back and also want to hang the people of jordan and egypt who are so hospitable to me during my time over there, i truly appreciate it. Join us for our moment of zinn. You sat down with nixon. There is something about the Los Angeles Times about brezhnev and i mentioned this and nixon said, oh, he says, i wouldnt washington want to be a russian leader they never know when they are being captioning sponsored by Comedy Central
