apparently this is the book that might have got steve bannon fired. so stick around for that. first, people all over america gathered to watch the first total solar eclipse in 30 years. i don't know about you, but i went out, had a great time, everybody in the building enjoyed it, but i think it's safe to say nobody in america enjoyed it more than fox news' shep smith. >> a total eclipse of the -- bang! wow! would you look at that! it's a total eclipse of the sun! if i put this here and my phone here, i have a total eclipse of the phone! ♪ total eclipse of the heart we have been watching the path of totality so you can catch it in d.c. if you run. we're not even out of idaho! ( buzzing ) it's not beatrice, it's be-a-trice, nebraska. what are are they having, guys? >> total eclipse to have the sun. >> can you feel it? >> trevor: that's the joy of a news anchor that gets to cover a story that doesn't involve donald trump. the sun! the sun! finally the sun! ( laughter ) today felt like like a special day in america. we all came together, doing the same thing and we were happy about it. people in the streets, kids came out of school. they were even watching at the white house. can i just say, look at jeff sessions. ( laughter ) he looks so adorable! ( laughter ) it's like he's watching santa ride off into the sky with all the toys he helped make! just like, yeah! ( laughter ) i mean, donald trump and melania were watching together? which surprised me because, i mean, two minutes of total darkness? that should her chance to escape. ( laughter ) i would have. apparently, the president's aides were really worried about him. so they told him not to look directly into the sun. and donald trump was, like, don't worry about me. that's my policy, every day, don't look at the sun. don't talk to the sun. ( laughter ) and definitely don't celebrate the son's birthday. nothing. ( cheers and applause ) but, uh, before we carry on, ladies and gentlemen, "the daily show" is back. thank you very much. thank you very much for being here again. thank you for tuning in. like the sun, like the sornings we briefly disappeared. the show was off for two weeks. i won't lie. my goal for the time we were off was just to have a vacation. i was, like, with everything going on in america, it's getting too much. i just wanted to escape all the racial tension. so i went to south africa. and you -- ( laughter ) you guys are assholes. ( laughter ) and i was just hoping to get away from politics for a little bit, but no. >> in south africa, large crowds took to the streets of cane town to call for the removal of president zuma. >> zuma face as vote of no confidence this tuesday, a secret ballot, if lawmakers can secure a simple majority, mr. zuma and cabinet will be asked to resign. >> the first week i was there, the president almost got kicked out of power. a south african woman was assaulted with an extension cord which is an abuse of power and it's as crazy as it sounds. this is a real story. i was, like, this is not a vacation, this is chaos, but i still had a week of my break left so i thought, you know what? i'm going to go back to america and just chill. ( laughter ) turns out, i left the third world and landed in the thirdreich. >> white nationalists descending on charlottesville, v, to protest a statue of robert e. lee. >> violence. >> one person is dead after a car went into a crowd of protesters. >> president trump turns an infrastructure event into a rambling rant blaming both sides for the violence. >> you had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. i think there's blame on both sides. you look at both sides, i think there's blame on both sides, and i have no doubt about it, and you don't have any doubt about it either. >> trevor: i know he was trying to convince us but trump looks like an untrained failing jedi heart. you don't have any doubt about it, there are protesters and kfc is a vegetable. you know, you know! ( laughter ) i know this happened a week ago but i'm not going to lie. i'm still processing everything. you know, first of all, a racist neonazi killed a peacefully protesting woman with his car, all right? then the president of the united states defended the neo-nazis who that dude was marching with. and this is the thing, it's not once, but twice. donald trump said it, then three days later he came back and said, hey, hey, you know how i said that nazi defending thing. well, i just realized that i messed up. i didn't defend them enough. yeah, yeah. my support was here, and i was trying to get it here. yeah. ( laughter ) and i'm not going to lie. i don't know about you but seemed for a moment that, okay, this was it. this was clearly not what presidents do. after tragic national events, a leader, even a mediocre leader, says things to unite the country, and not inflame tensions. in south africa during apartheid, we had a nazi organization known as the a.w.b. and they wanted an all-white country, they had their own hip new swastika. a full-on nazi organization. and back then south africa was under apartheid. but the apartheid government restricted where black people could live, didn't allow them to study and stripped their right to vote. when they would hold their rallies, the apartheid government would be, nazis, no, i like racism as much as the other guy, but nazis? come on, people! i think we can all agree as humans, or as black people, that nazis is a step too far, people! it's a step too far! even in apartheid, south africa. ( laughter ) but today, in america -- ( laughter ) we're not even at that point? seven months into his term, 41 months to go, by the way, and the president of the united states has officially legitimized whit white supremacs basically saying we need to see things from the nazis poif, march a mile in their boots. you would think this would be the straw that broke the camel's back. turns out the president's party has a lot of camels. >> a new cbs poll showed 67% of republicans approved the way the president handled the response to the charlottesville attack. >> trevor: but how? but how? two-thirds of republicans thought trump handled charlottesville well is this i know it sounds crazy to say this but that's the shocking part to me. donald trump did his thing, but 67% are like, yeah, yeah, he did his thing. anyone can fart, right? they do their thing, they fart, but it takes a special group of people two-thirds to be like -- ( sniffing ) -- nicely done, yeah. i like the way you handled that. that was nice. i really like that. ( cheers and applause ) ( laughter ) who are you? and here's the thing, if so many of trump supporters are willing to give nazis the benefit of the doubt, then clearly anything goes. there is no line that they won't cross and, clearly, no cross that they won't burn. we'll be right back. ( cheers and applause ) get up... and get down at cricket wireless, with the cricket unlimited 2 plan. two lines of unlimited data for $80/mo. plus, get 2 smartphones free, when you switch. all on a network that covers over 99% of americans. cricket wireless. something to smile about. ( cheers and applause ) >> trevor: welcome back to "the daily show." now, we were just talking about the white supremacy rallies in charlottesville, boston and, you know, i realized it's a little weird to just say white supremacy as if it's a normal thing everyone should be familiar with. everyone says it but what does it actually mean? what do white supremacists want? turns out it's actually pretty straightforward. >> we're showing to this parasitic class of anti-white vermin this is our country, built by our forefasters, sustained by us and is going to remain our country. >> on average, whites are more intelligent than blacks and north asians are more intelligent than whites. >> how do you say that? >> how could you think other wise? the entire record of history is completely consistent with the assumption that blacks are less intelligent than whites or asians. >> trevor: let's talk about the idea whites are superior. whites have done well in the past few hundred years. invented light bulbs, airplanes, cured polio, went to the moon, won the grammy for best rap album. ( laughter ) it's been a good run. at one point mesopotamia was killing it. the egyptians hit back with the pyramids. white people had larry bird, then michael jordan came back, and shaq, and lebron -- basically, white people had larry bird. ( laughter ) the jury is out on who the best race is. i'm not convinced that it's these guys. >> this man's image has come to symbolize friday night's rally. your racist identified him as peter cvjetanovic a student at the university of nevada reno. >> i do not identify as white supremacist or racist. of course that definition is really fluid. people have one version, i have out. i'm alt-right because i'm pro-right. >> trevor: what? people have another version? that's weird. a millennial nazi saying he's not sure what he believes so we shouldn't label him racist? if that's what he does when he's not sure, what the (bleep) is he foingd going the do when he's made up his mind? ( laughter ) and by the way, dude, i hate to break it to you but your last name is cvjetanovic. it may be fun hanging out with nazis now but you're up in round two now. as far as the klan is concerned your name might as well be tyrone lopez ginsburg. what are you thinking? for analysis we turn to our own roy wood, jr., everybody! ( cheering ) watching what happened in charlottesville, it only made me wonder how are you the master race but you're so dumb? >> trevor: i don't understand, roy. >> trevor, these dudes, they got a great thing going and they're messing it up. donald trump's already giving white supremacists pretty much everything they want. he's building the wall, banning muslims, taking away black people's voting rights and blocked tyler perry from dropping any new madea movies. >> trevor: is that true? >> i haven't seen one come out in three weeks so it's got to be trump. ( laughter ) >> trevor: let's take a step back. i don't understand why you say white supremacists are messing up. >> because they are. they got a man on the inside, but all the stupid (bleep) they're doing is just bringing heat on him. trump's trying to give them the hook up. that's not how you treat a hookup. i had the experience. i had a hook up at went yssments my boy ramrod, used to work at wendy's. he'd give us a bag of wendy's every day. junior bacons, nuggets falling out of the top. one day i got entitled, went inside and complained because they forgot the lettuce. hookup done, ramrod retired. dwhiewnt i'm saying? >> trevor: continue complain about the lettuce when you're getting the burger for free. >> hallelujah! white supremacists have to learn by wreaking havoc they hurt their cause. o.j. went free, white people -- black people went crazy and white people locked him up again. this time, when o.j. got paroled, black people was chilled. o.j., who? but on the inside, the juice is loose! the juice is loose! ( laughter ) i suspect that, after firing or consciously uncoupling with steve bannon, that he's still going to have bannon on speed dial and that bannon is going to have a way in to trump to make his advice known if he wants to. >> trevor: steve bannon was reported to say, now that i'm out, now that i'm on the outside, i can be more effective. many breitbart editors were tweeting, you know, #war, and this means war. who is the war on? is bannon still a trump guy or is bannon now going to go after trump or is bannon going to go after the ideas that trump is forced to choose because of who he's working with? >> the story i tell in the book basically is that bannon gave trump a set of ideas. trump always had populist impulses but bannon flushed this out with policy ideas. it wasn't just anti-immigration and building the wall. it was to say, look, america needs a less interventionist foreign policy and america needs to blow up its trade deals and do a laundry list of things that bannon thought trump would do if they made it to the white house together. that's the bargain in the title of the book. bannon's frustration is it hasn't worked out. the trump administration has gone completely off the rails. what he means by war is he's going to fight for the same ideas on the outside not necessarily by taking on trump directly but by using what he called the killing weapon of breitbart news to go after trump's enemies on capitol hill and i think in the administration, so people like h.r. mcmaster, the national security, gary cohn the top economic adviser and of course jared kushner, the son-in-law, all the people he did battle with in the white house, he's now freed up from outside the white house to go after them publicly. >> trevor: how powerful would breitbart be in this instance? how powerful will they be in shaping public opinion and how powerful will they be more importantly in shaping there trs opinion from the outside? >> that is the million-dollar question. part of the reason trump surprised people and won the nomination is people, including myself, didn't understand the power breitbart and its populist/nationalist message had. it was popular and enough to get trump elected, barely but elected. i think if bannon continues to fight for these ideas on the outside, what he could wind up doing is driving a wedge in the republican party between the people who like these ideas and voted for trump and the people who say, no, no, you know, our country has gone completely off the rails, we've got to steer back in a more moderate direction. >> trevor: it's an amazing book, a really fascinating story you're telling. it gave us so much insight into a man who had more power than people perceived. most importantly, you wrote a back about steve bannon and he got fired. so who is the next book about, jeff sessions? that's what we want to know. thank you so much for coming to the show.
