I hope they catch them soon and they put them in body bags. These two men are ruthless nasty killers. Just look at their records. They will do anything to achieve their freedom because theyre both in for a long time and theyve got a history of doing horrid things to people. Bottom line is they could be anywhere. That was vermonts governor. His state has stepped patrols up as well on lakes as well as on remote campsites. I want to go live to upstate new york for more on this search. We have cnn National CorrespondentJason Carroll there in west plattsburg. Jason, give us the latest from where you stand. Do they think these two escapes inmates are still together or might they have branched off and gone separate ways . The latest information that were having brianna, is that the belief is that the two are still together that richard matt and david sweat are on the run together and, in fact just recently in terms of more information about what you were talking about that those bloodhounds picking up on that scent near that gas station, that gas station located just about a mile or so from where the prison is located, that is the maple fields gas station and in all likelihood these two guys there are looking for supplies looking for food maybe in the dumpster trying to find whatever they can. Theyre going to be looking at the security cameras there to see if there are any leads that they can get from those security cameras. Dog sniffers also picked up the scent in the area where we are as well. We talked a little bit about that yesterday. Investigators are still focussed in on that particular section, a perimeter has been set up. Theyre narrowing in on that perimeter as well. We talked about the things that were found there, including wrappers that seemed to match the description of wrappers used at the prison commissary as well. I want to bring in to get a little bit more information about the search i want to bring in plattsburg chief of police desmond rassico. I know we were talking about the resources you have out here. Just bring us up to date in terms of what you have going on now in terms of the search. Well as things have been going since the start, theres a tremendous amount of resources surrounding the area. You cant look in any direction without seeing either a corrections officer or a Police Officer. So thats really helpful, obviously. The search is different zones are contained and so right now so youre setting up different zones . The whole area is broken up into different zones. It has to be tracked and we have to make sure were searching areas and researching areas. So thats really important. The new York State Police i have to tell you, im a member of the community, i have friends and family contacting us all time. Were going to catch these guys. I know youve got got some confidence there. Tell me i know youre limited in terms of what you can discuss but can you tell me about the area they were focused on yesterday . I cant get into details about the investigation or the search. I know our team is set up as a Response Team so were on standby standby. Yesterday we were at the corner of 374 and trudeau road which is what were on right now. Theres a lot of information on social media. Were sitting in our police cars we have radios on. Theres a massive information. Can you give us any sort of perspective in terms of why the Police Officer is that these two may still be together. Well, the canine, the hound dogs and people working those things have the most direct information as being channelled through Incident Command Center so right now there have been some hits with these dogs in different areas and, again, you know, theres so many sightings, sounds being heard, people see movement all of those things being checked out. But, again, were checking things rechecking things and rechecking things just to be thorough. I know youre also asking the public to be vigilant to be on the lookout for anything that might be suspicious but you are also talking about misinformation that seems to be out there as well. Theres a tremendous amount of information on facebook and text messaging back and forth from the community. We certainly need the community to be hypervigilant and report what they see but we caution theres a lot of information people are sending to their friends and family saying people are spotted, people are running heard this heard that. Sometimes it can cause more alarm for your friends and family. Really at this point let the professional News Agencies handle the information. When these people are apprehended, which we hope will be soon youll know right away. I was talking to one Law Enforcement source who says these two were operating on the fly. Their original plan didnt come through, plan a, they are now on plan b which maybe explaines why they went by the maple fields gas station looking for supplies foods, things such as that nature. No sightings of them since what weve heard from this past weekend. Anything at all you can tell us about their movement. Not really. Do you believe theyre still the area . Again, you have to operate under the assumption that they are. Theres a couple different components here. One is a tactical component, maintaining perimeters searching very very thick heavily forested areas. Garages, old abandoned vehicles. Just a tremendous amount of growth in there, too. Several years back there was a significant ice storm up here and this area that put a lot of trees and brush down. Thats all its very thick. And the other side, the new York State Police and the federal agencies and local agencies working to do the criminal investigation, trying to follow up on leads. So there are two Different Things happening at one time and, of course, theres a lot of information sharing back and forth. The hard part you know really is that the men and women stationed on these perimeters standing in the rain trying to stay vigilant theyre exposed to the elements, the bugs. And they might be as well. I know its a drain on resources. I want to ask one more question. Any information that they might be armed . Well, theyre both convicted killers so i would make the assumption that anything is possible. I would certainly for our offices and the people in the area let the professionals interact. If you see something, contact Law Enforcement, dont approach these people theyre desperate, theyre dangerous. Theyre convicted ones a convicted cop killer and the other one committed multiple murders. Very good. Chief racicot, thank you very much. I know there are a lot of resources out here. The escape has turned life upside down for those in and around dannemora, new york. Many residents are afraid to leave their homes. Theyre scared to go to work. Schools there are closed. Lets talk to jonathan parks, joining us on the line from dannemora, the superintendent of the Central School district. Jonathan these schools that have been closed are they going to remain that way until the killers are caught . Were operating on a day by day basis. Were briefed by new York State Police every evening and based on the information they provide me we get together and make a decision regarding whether school is going to be in session the next day. Okay, so youre doing it day by day. But what is the criteria . Is it based on where there are hits from dogs . Mainly the criteria is the location and the i guess magnitude of the search in this area. Our issue with the School District is a, we have students who live in and or very near that search area that we cant get to as well as a number of the roads around here are closed so we cant run our complete bus routes to get to other student this is that are near the area. So that and i guess the third factor is that this search is expanding on a daily basis more and more Law Enforcement personnel are coming in everyday. For them to have to deal with school buses traveling around the roads and, of course they get searched at every checkpoint and what not is not is not going to help the process. So for the last two days weve decide the prudent thing is to keep the schools closed . And get out of their way, let them do what they need to do. What do you do moving forward . I think of small children and the fact that parents must be having discussions with them and they must be awfully scared. What will you do if they are or arent caught . This is a scary situation with these kids . I had a conversation with one of my administrators. When we get back to a normal routine of our school day, that impact is still there. And with Young Children we have a great relationship with the Law EnforcementCommunity Around here and we will probably make a plan to bring them in to help us to have discussions with the children about what they think, what did they see and what did it mean when they saw those men standing next to the road with guns . What were they there for . You and i when we see a large number of Law Enforcement personnel in one area, we think okay, i feel better im safe. And theres a lot of that going around. A child might not process the that information the same way, a man standing around with a gun in a black uniform may cause them some concern and they would worry about that. So getting some information out to them after the fact is heres what we were here for. Heres what our Law Enforcement personnel were doing for us in the community and utilizing them to help us deliver that message i think will go a long way to help them get back to a normal routine. Back now to our top story, the search for two escaped killers in upstate new york. Investigators continue to speak to Joyce Mitchell shes the woman that authorities believe was supposed to be the get away driver. Alexandra field is outside of the prison in dannemora, new york. Fascinating developments very troubling developments. What are authorities telling us that mitchell provided by to these escaped inmates. Brianna, what shes being accused of is pretty brazen. Law enforcement sources are saying Joyce Mitchell the woman who worked in the tailor shop in this maximum security prison provided by tools to convicted killers. Were talking about hacksaw blades drill bits even glasses with lights on them. These men have been on the run for six days now, brianna, and since basically the beginning here Joyce Mitchell has been at the center of this investigation and thats because her interactions with these two inmates raised eyebrows. In fact there was a previous investigation after reports of some kind of improper relationship with one of the two men. The Clinton CountyDistrict Attorney says that no evidence ever was found that would sport r or confirm whether or not a relationship did exist but as a result of that investigation we know david sweat was removed from his post at the tailor shot where she worked. Authorities have also talked about her ties to richard matt saying her cell phone was used to connect with some of matts contacts his associates. She has been speaking to investigators. She told them that matt made her feel special, brianna. Very interesting. It makes you wonder why at this point we dont know shes been charged, right . If you look at these facts here you would imagine that investigators are figuring that she was complicit in this escape. But theyre not really taking action against her, right . She has not been charged, according to the Clinton CountyDistrict Attorney. She is working closely with investigators. In fact were told she has gone in to answer questions almost every single day and yet even given some of the accusations and allegations, she seems to have not retained an attorney. Its important to investigators right now that they continue to work closely with this woman. She may have as good an idea of the fugitives plan as anyone but the District Attorney has also said it is his intention to file some charges at the end of this investigation and, brianna, frankly, were talking about serious charges, potentially felony charges. Theres a possibility she could be charged with promoting prison contraband or even accessory to escape. This is a bill that is supported in the house largely by Establishment Republicans and it faces some strong opposition on both ends of the spectrum by most democrats and then by conservative republicans. In effect, what this would do is it would allow president obama to negotiate trade deals and it would give Congress Just an up or down yes or no vote. Both sides, democrats, republicans, even the president himself admitting that they dont know which way this vote will go. But certainly there was a huge blow to the bill when just moments ago House Minority leader nancy pelosi announced and this was secret up to then she announced she will be against the first bill taa, trade assistance authority, and likely moving to slow down the trade promotion authority. So this is a huge blow to one of the president s goals. So a lot of confusion on capitol hill. President obama huddled for a half hour with House Democrats who have been in opposition to him. They have been his appearance on capitol hill does little to sway many members. We heard from multiple members leaving that this morning that they werent swayed by president obama. He made an emotional appeal to them saying lets vote this straight dont vote on this first bill taa, in order to derail another bill the taa will be the first vote we see, brianna, that house vote here.
