tonight we start with the divide inside the republican party. on capitol hill hard right members clash with moderates over a massive defense bill. along the campaign trail, the gop presidential candidates are fighting for a place on the debate stage next month. as front-runner donald trump continues to hedge on whether he will show up. tonight, we're getting answers from the woman in charge. rnc chair ronald mcdaniel. let's start with the big subject right now and that is a republican presidential debate, just a little bit a month away. you have made it clear that you want to be on the debate stage, you want to participate, you got to sign a pledge to support the eventual nominee. and it is not just donald trump who is giving you trouble on that. take a look. >> it is only in the area of donald trump that you need somebody to sign something. i think it is a bad idea. >> i won't be signing any kind of pledges and i don't think that parties should be trying to rig who should be on the debate stage. >> i don't think the pledges good, i don't think it is the right thing for the party. i think it is meaningless at this point. >> are you standing firm on this? if you want to participate in the republican presidential debate, you have to sign this loyalty pledge. >> it is the beat biden pledge and what we are saying, and the debate committee has met for over two years, people from alexa to illinois to tennessee, if you're going to stand on the republican national committee debate stage you're going to make sure that our number one priority is beating joe biden. so if you don't want to support the republican nominee, go run independent. go run for a different party. this is the republican party nomination and you should be able to support the nominee. >> are you saying even donald trump? >> everybody has to sign the pledge. everybody. it is across the board. the rules are changing. we have been very vocal with them. >> what about somebody like governor chris christie who says, i will sign it and i will take it as seriously as donald trump did in 2016? cleat is not just a pledge, not just a piece of paper. i think the debate committee, we are going to continue to meet before we get on the debate stage and they don't want somebody saying blatantly lying. you have to be willing to say i'm going to support the for the voters choose. >> former president trump has given another reason why he might skip, at least the early debates. that is. >> i like to debate. i probably am here because of debates. i don't mind it at all. but when you are 40 points up, why would i allow people with one or 2% and zero per to be having your questions all night. i don't make it is fair. cleat the front runner, who, at this point, is far ahead of the rest of the field decides to skip the debates, isn't that really going to cut into the credibility and the importance of these debates? >> i think these debates are critical. i hope he joins the debate stage. i think the voters deserve to hear from anybody running for president. i think he will be on the debate stage. i know his consultants, some of them are saying just skip it. i think anytime we can get in front of the american people is good for our party. then he skips it, that's his choice. nobody is mandated to be on the debate stage. he has skipped it before. i think he should be on the debate stage. >> mr. trump faces federal charges for mishandling top- secret classified documents and refusing to give them back to the government and there is even a tape of him showing him, certainly showing them with people without security clearances. >> let's see here. >> [ laughter ] >> isn't that amazing? >> what troubles me is the double standard in justice. i think he deserves a presumption of innocence, he has not made his case, i think we need to wait and i do think as soon as trump does something it is automatically he is guilty. if biden doesn't, it is automatically he is innocent. >> there are big differences between the two. without getting about the what about is him. >> that is every game, that is the game. cleat doesn't necessarily the game. i am really asking you just about that take, he is talking about a tip, he is saying i could've declassified it as president, now i can't, he is showing it to people without a security clearance. i'm not asking you. >> i'm not that that role, i think he deserves to be able to present his case with the resumption of innocence but hillary clinton was found with 22 top-secret documents. donald trump was found with allegedly 17. why is there one standard of justice for her and different for him? please let me ask you a question. do you have any problem with the republican party nominating somebody who is under federal indictment? >> i think the presumption of innocence stands and i think there's a lot of republicans who are very troubled at the end of the day, chris, it is not up to me. it is up to the voters. they are going to make the decision, they're going to hear this and they are going to decide if this is an issue for them, november. or, the primary process. i am not seeing this right now creating an issue. >> i want to buy something you said on november 10th, 2020, which is one week after the election >> sure. >> when news outlets had all projected joe biden was the winner of the 2020 election. >> okay. we are you are. cleat has been rigged from the beginning. right from the laws that were being passed in the name of covid to create a porous election. rigged in the sense that they kicked republicans out of poll watching and observing. why do you do that if you have nothing to hide? >> when did you stop being an election tonight? >> [ laughter ] i think saying there are problems with 2020 is very real. i don't that is election tonight. chris, i am from lane county, we had a note saying i am being told to backdate ballots. we had to look into that. when you have friends that are poll watching and being kicked out, that is deeply concerning. we have every right to look at that and i think everybody should have a little more concerned about. listen. >> wait a minute, in you are saying the chair of the republican party, you still have questions as to whether or not joe biden was the duly elected president? close >> joe biden is the president. cleat you think he won the election? >> i think there were lots of problems with 2020. ultimately he won the election but ultimately he won the election but there were lots of problems with the election, hundred percent. >> that is fair. >> i don't think you wanted fair, i don't, i'm not going to say that. let's look at the hunter biden laptop, 51 people in the intelligence agency signed a letter saying there was russian disinformation. that is what the public disseminated was being told, that is not true. >> you are suggesting that he may not be the legitimate president. we the american people were not getting the information for that election. >> a few weeks after the 2020 election, just before december 14th when the formal soda nation would happen, the president and his lawyer called you to talk about organizing fake collectors, electors in states that biden won, who would vote for donald trump, if it were to get to that point in the congress on january 6th. this is the subject of a criminal investigation, and fake collectors have you been asked to speak either >> i'm not talking about anything like that. no, i'm not answering any questions. >> have you been asked, have you spoken to either the office of the special counsel, jack smith, or to his grand jury? and i said probably go down and get some cookies and milk. and that bedroom was the bedroom we conceived our son. >> that night? >> are you crazy? no. i had to get to know him a little bit. >> okay. >> i am not that crazy. >> okay. okay. >> i like to have fun but i am not that crazy. >> a few years later you are not together and you make a movie called overboard. so the question i have, which people have been asking, for more than 40 years, we are going to get into it. why aren't the two of you married? >> why should we get married? isn't that a better question? >> well, i suppose. but why aren't you married? >> because we have been married. because when it doesn't work out it ends up to be big business. somebody has to own something, it is always ugly. somebody has to, actually take a look and say how many divorces are fun? how many divorces actually. >> none i've ever heard. >> how many divorces make you even hate the person more than you did before. how many divorces have hurt children? >> were not going to get divorced. >> how did you know that then? >> well, i suppose that is a good question. >> no one knows. >> i do want to ask two questions. is part of it making a statement that you want to show you don't play by society's rules? >> no, i've never made a statement, in my life. >> is part of it superstition that it is all going well? why rock the boat? >> that could be part of it. i think that could be part of it. our children, really, we asked them, they said no. >> you asked them whether -- >> they like it the way it is. they have been through divorce. it's not fun for them. and there is an independence that i think is interesting when two people aren't fused together. i like the idea that i can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if i want to be here. >> sort of everyday you are making the choice, do i want to stay? >> you know, relationships are hard. they are not always easy. there is all kinds of hurdles that we go through, there are things that we believe and think that we don't believe. we agree on. so i think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important. so you can hold onto yourself. and you can actually have that feeling. >> for someone who has had such a great career, i was fascinated as i studied up on you, how much time you have spent away from the business in the early 90s you took four years off to help your mom, who was dying of heart disease. and then from the early 2000's on, you were, didn't do any movies for 15 years. the question i have is, what does all that say about where hollywood ranks in your life? in the scale of your priorities? >> i always thought, when i turned 50, that i was like, what else am i going to do? what else am i going to learn in life? i just want to feel right about what i do. and when you get to a certain age and a certain time in your career, sometimes it is time to start looking outward instead of always at yourself. and for me, i was asking a lot of my friends, what is the third section of our life going to look like? because i was just looking at doing something extraordinary, doing another thing, learning something else. so my philosophy is don't get stuck in what you are doing because it is not who you are, it's what you do. and this is all i think about every day. i have great children, kurt and i raised them well. we have amazing grandchildren. i now want to take my life and look at how i can help others. >> i want to ask you about that. you have had four children. what kind of a mom were you? >> i was, well, my kids will say i was firm but i did, i guess you can say, as oliver used to say, katie, we knew we were in trouble when your nostrils flared up [ laughter ] but, you see, i picked my battles. i wasn't a nagging mother. and that's what it is. i was a fun mom. and kurt was a perfect balance because he was fun, too. but he was strong. so they knew where they came from. >> i have to ask you one question about katie, kate hudson, who, obviously became a big star. at any point as she was following that path, did you ever have any qualms about her getting into what you knew, first hand, was a really rough is this? >> no, not at all. i raised her tough she was, she is nobody's fool. no was something she didn't always take. and sometimes yes is a better thing to say that i know. because when you say no to kate, she is going to be bigger and stronger. >> i read an article in variety recently where you talked about the death of the movie star. and you said that people used to be in awe and that is gone. here in hollywood. do you miss that? >> i don't know that i really meant that just about hollywood i think what i mean is that who are our heroes? what happened to them? basketball, you hear every bad thing that ever happened to anybody who gets successful. one of the things that i think we are missing is off. are, that feeling, it is such a beautiful feeling. and that is what i want our kids to be able to feel. people looking at movie stars, if that's an example, elizabeth taylor or, oh, now we are so familiar with everyone that we feel like, you know, we know them. we feel like, oh my god, there is someone so. and some people, yes. but i think awe is something we are missing in our society today. >> there is still awe about goldie hahn. you have 3 1/2 million followers on instagram, and sometimes you post videos, including some of you dancing. >> you have to dance through life. happiness is an inside job. you have to find the things that make us happy so we can consistently, deep down, go take it out. what televisions the guest night and some of our guests have in common. ch ampion your skin. make a splash with the ultimate pool party essential. blendjet gives you ice-crushing, big blender power on-the-go, so you can soak up the sun with a frosty beverage. enjoy 15+ blends before rapidly recharging via usb-c. and it even cleans itself with a drop of soap and water. stand out even when you're accidentally twinning with our kaleidoscope of colors. make this summer the coolest ever. order yours now from blendjet.com. finally, tonight, the nominees for the 70 eighth emmy awards were announced this week. and we want to congratulate some of our guests who earned themselves nominations. brian cox for succession henry winkler for barony. carol burnett for her variety show, 90 years of laughter. pot, lock sheet for top shift, and michael imperioli for the white lotus. last fall i sat down and with imperial he and we talked about his first emmy win for his memorable role as the zipper on the hit show, the sopranos. and the headshaking thing he did after he won. >> you win an emmy for your work that season, and then you throw your emmy in the garbage? >> it was more of a symbolic gesture. so we won the emmy, matteo and i want one that year and the show, for the first time, won best to show after five seasons. he did not win best show so everyone was in a good mood. and we, you know, we went to the governors ball, the hbo party, we had our own party at the hotel, wound up in someone's room at like 1:00 in the morning. my wife said to me. you know, i bet you are very proud of yourself. people congratulating you, making a big deal over you, fussing over you, kissing your . she says i'm not impressed. if you had any balls you would take that statue and throw it in the garbage. we were pretty loaded by then. by that hour. i said i don't care. and i didn't want to do that but i had to show some bravado. i said i don't care about that and i took it. like this is a, the peninsula hotel in beverly hills the trash can, so it wasn't like i went into. into a compost and stuffed it in. so i took it and put it in the garbage in the hotel room. and then we went to sleep and then we woke up i said i am ordering some breakfast. she said yeah, get me, order me something, get some coffee and she said don't forget to take your emmy out of the garbage can. we hope michael's future emmy's stay out of the trash and good luck to all of our guests at the awards ceremony on september 18th. thank you for watching, you can catch my full interviews with ronna mcdaniel and goldie hawn anytime you want on max. and please join us here on cnn every friday night to find out who's talking next.
