A Catholic Church machines ago holding a Prayer Service for shooting victims in the heart of the city. Joe write garel is essentially the mayor, and he knew Jillian Johnson. Thank you so much for being here sir. Tell us about jillian. Tell us about her. Well she was one of these ladies very involved in the community, and i want to say i didnt know her very well. Her husband used to be a reporter for one of the newspapers in this state, but in a town this guy, you say hello, give a kiss. We ran into each other from time to time. She was just a bedrock of this community, one of the real givers of this community. We have heard that the killer had Mental Illness, his exwife took away his guns once had him involuntary committed. Do you have any idea how he got this handgun . Oh, no thats not a big issue for me. Its what he did with that handgun that matters. Its just a tragedy, and its a horrible thing. I think we have a hard time as humans wrapping our brains around this. How does anybody shoot an innocent person. You used the world deranged a while ago. A normal person cant do this horror. All i mean by that is many communities have law toss prevent those who are clearly not mentally capable of possessing a gun from doing it. I would assume your community is one of those as well if he had been involuntary committed, there might have been a law that would have prevented him from getting a gun. I believe. Of course i believe we follow state laws those are mostly laws imposed by the state. What we follow here is whatever the state has in place. Theres obviously nothing that could ever explain why this man did this but are police any closer to figuring out what at least he thought, what his twisted motivation was . We just cant you know obviously, as i said, you cant withdrawn your brain. The guy wasnt from here. We know hes been here 2, 2 1 2 weeks maybe. Were trying to figure out if he was at another hotel before that. We have nothing that says he was here any longer than the last couple weeks. Why he came to lafayette is the big question, why this theater . We know he came into the theater at least the last couple days you know so he had a plan. He had the car parked. It wasnt a random act that he decided to do yesterday. So its its just one of these things that i dont think anybody can ever explain it. Psychologists havent been able to klain this yet. I hear you, mr. Durel, our prayers are with you and your city at this emotional time. Thank you for talking to us. The issue now is the families and the victims. Ive talked to a couple today, friends of mine that are in the hospital. They were in good spirits considering. Of course theyre counting their blessings. Just such a random act of violence. Its hard to explain. This community will come back. Our hearts are breaking right now. We are hurting, but well bounce back. Its a great community, a lot of prayers a lot of people supporting each other. So well be good. Thank you so much sir. I appreciate your time. Thank you. I want to bring in miguel marquez. Please described this gunman the man response for all this pain and horror described him as a drifter. Youve been dryinging on his past. He wasnt always a drifter. It appears in 2001 there was a significant event that has rocked his world. He lost his business lost his Liquor License in la grange georgia. In response to that and what he felt was government overreaction he hung a flag with a swastika on it outside his business for about a month. It seems that event was the beginning of his unraveling s John Russel Houser known as rusty portrayed himself as a selfmade businessman and entrepreneur. He had a law degree from Faulkner University and the reality appears much different. There was a restraining order put in his. Reporter a 2008 restraining order offers a glimpse, taken out by his own family says houser had a history of manic depression and or bipolar disorder. His wife so concerned about his mental state, removed all guns and or weapons from their home. The family even sought to have houser committed to a mental care facility involuntary. A request granted by a judge. We know had had contacts early on in the city with some businesses but, you know nothing that would have alerted anyone to think maybe we need to call Law Enforcement will this fellow. Reporter in postings last january to u. S. Messageboard. Com he expressed admiration for adolf hitler saying the mass murderer accomplished mar more than any other. On the same site he saluted fundamentalist muslims who have killed in the name of their religion. On the website politicalforum. Com between march and may 2013 postings that can mostly be described as nonsensical ramblings, but there are themes. Again and again he expressed concern about the media black block vote Political Alliance his writings expressing fear of gays demise the white america, fear of israel even of the nra, i knew they werent worth a damn. He said all my life i have lived my life as an oddball. Now there seems to be a purpose in it. Were trying to put together some closure. This is not a 100yard dash its a marathon. Just last week he was evicted from his home in phenix alabama, and mostly his living in a hotel. He was denied a permit to carry a concealed weapon baas his record showed an arrest for arson in columbus, georgia. The other theme that becomes very clear in reading this individuals writings is he was paranoid to an increasing degree. He goes back again and again to the idea that the world is falling apart, that they had to arm themselves they had to take precautions, and basically painting the world as turning into a mad max scenario. He uses that term many times over the years, jake. Thank you, marcus. I want to bring in jess brewer. Through a bizarre incident he actually knew the shooter. Thanks for being here. How did you know him . Actually the gunman lived down the street from me probably about ten houses down. When you lived in alabama. For many year in columbus georgia, which is near phenix. Its a pretty small town but you would run into all the families in the neighborhood especially being lemont tear School Parents are so involved so we would run into him from time to time and i was fairly close with his daughter as well his lovely daughter. He had a great bif wife so it was very odd the situation would arise from that seemingly good family. What is his reputation. He was known for big politically charged s. Ran for local elections, and ran in local politics. He really was, as miguel said a very is paranoid man. He was believed to be in trouble for stealing opponents political signs, a lot of incidents dealing with what he thought were political or business rivals. You heard some of the things he ranted about online did he voice those opinions . Was he publicly aligned with any radical causes or views . Not openly. Im not so sure i would have been very aware of it but we do remember things like him flying a Confederate Flag or a dont trail on me so there was an indication he might have had fringe ideaologies. Did you notice any indication that he would be capable of doing something violent . You know, i dont think i did. I dont think anybody really knew him in the times he lived in columbus or knew his family would think he would carry out a really violent attack and affect so many families. I thought it was just more of he was a bit unstable and not much of a violent threat at least. But since then obviously in 2006 denied a conceal carry permit because of a previous arrest in 2008 involuntarily committed, some bad things in his life. Sure. Hes had a lot of rocky phases through his life and different incidences that have shown hes been pretty unstable and getting more unstable as the years went on. Thanks for being with us. I know its not easy to talk about these things. Thanks for stopping by. Together, were building a better california. Were going to continue with our National Lead the Movie Theater shooting in lafayette, louisiana. Last nights events combined with the shooting in aurora colorado three years ago this week serve as more evidence that theaters can be a vulnerable targets for deadly violence and represent a nightmare scenario for Law Enforcement. Theyre dark people go in and out unsearched. Moviegoers are distracted what steps can and should be taken to prevent the next shooting from happening . Cnns tom foreman joins us with more. Tom, it might seem these events happen so seldom people wouldnt take steps, but have steps been taken in aurora . Think tried to take steps nationwide department of Homeland Security met with theater owners but even as they tried to address it theyve had no way to grapple with the inherent dangers of this socalled soft targets presented by Movie Theaters places uniquely vulnerable for several key issues. In the chaos of the latest theater shootings, a sadly common theme. Some people heard the shots, heard the screams, and thought nothing of it. They heard pops. Thought it was part of the moviening they noticed the flashes. Thats when people realized something was going on. Reporter it is an understandable mistake. Out of last years top ten films, eight were action adventures like captain america, the Winter Soldier with lots of shooting crashing and yelling amplified by state of the art audio systems. In colorado the dark nikt rises was rolling when the gunfire began. I thought it was good sound effects. My wife nudged me and said no thats way too loud for something that should be in the movie. Another problem, Darkness Police say the lafayette gunmen clearly took advantage of all eyes being on the bright screen using the darkness to hide his actions and identity. We think that he intended on leaving. He did exit the theater and try to blend in with the crowd, who was also leaving very quickly. Reporter and lastly most theaters have limited security even while dealing with millions of people and films that are sometimes emotionally charged. When boiz in the hood opened in 1981 more than two dozens theaters nationwide had violent outbreaks. Today there are nearly 43,000 screens in the u. S. And canada and almost 230 Million People go to at least one film a year all with little, if any, security. So while some theater operators met with Homeland Security and stepped up their Safety Measures other operators have argued theres just nothing they can reasonably do to stop a determined killer against all of those different factor. Still, numerous lawsuits have been launched especially after the colorado shooting suggesting they need to at least try a bit harder. The idea of soft targets is the focus here. Soft tarts in general, talking about Shopping Centers or schools or sporting events its just Movie Theaters are where all those factors we cited are uniquely problematic in so many ways. Thank you so much tom foreman. The lafayette movie murders leave us with the same disturbing questions we ask after other mass shootings, which we cover far too often. Mainly why . What would motivate a person to go into a theater and start shooting joining muss now president of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense fund. Ron, is there a general profile of these mass shooters . Well almost exclusively these matt shooters are single males doing this. White males usually. Frequently white males, almost exclusively male one shooter, not two, not multiple. You see these intersections with Mental Health issues repeatedly. We saw it in virginia tech. We saw it here in d. C. Navy yard. Weve seen it with Jared Loughner in aurora sandy hook. Weve seen it woven through this issue. Sometimes they Mental Health issues emerge when something is in their late teens or 20s. This shooter was in his 50s. Is that older than the norm . That tends to be older than normal than commonly accepted active shooter, but the challenge of this is and i was listening to some of your earlier coverage Mental Illness manifests itself in many ways. It manifests itself in many ways that was obvious one day and not so much the next. Before we a relative a friend a Family Member or Law Enforcement can take action you can encourage, you can coax but you cannot involuntary commit. It takes certain steps to involuntary commit his exwife did involuntary commit him in 2008. Thats right, and we have a system that is designed to treat you and put you back out on the street. If you tumble back down and nobody picks you back up youre facing a similar challenge that you may have faced before. Im trying to figure out where the fbi what the investigators are thinking right now. What do you make of the fact that wigs and apparent disguises were found in his oat room and he had parent swapped license plates . To me that clearly suggests he was looking at this as a way to get away. He thought he had an out. In fact he had left apparently saw the Police Coming reloaded went back in and took his own life. Its common that active shooters take their own life. In fact about 40 of the time within an fbi survey of study, 40 of those active shooters took their own life. 60 of these event occurred and concluded before the police arrived. So here you have to look at and credit the valor of these Police Officers. When that active shooter call goes out, and we saw it in the navy yard a few months ago, within a month, this very aggressive response from the Law Enforcement community. These Police Officers know what they have to do. It is a grim task it Shows Incredible bravely, we saw it in chattanooga. Right into the line of fire. Weaver seen it in other places rye lying on the training the tactics you have learned, and ush wondering whether youll make it through this encounter and go home. Some will not. So we see incredible bravely by the Police Officers and this training and the fbi ramped up the training effort over the last three years to train thousands of local Law Enforcement. Just hours before another gunman went on another rampage. President obama called the countrys failure to false stricter gun laws was one of the his biggest frustrations. We have seen the president from going to visibly crying and motivated to try to do something after the sandy hook shootings, to his current state which seems to be frustration expressed in an interview with bbc, which came just minutes before the gunman opened fire last night. Jim acosta is with the president today in kenya. Congress does not agree with president obama. Does he seem resigned to this being an area he wont get what he wants . I think thats the big question whether or not this has changed his calculus on this issue. President obama has landed on nairobi, returning to his fathers homeland. Unfortunately for the president , he will undoubtedly be faced with questions once again about gun violence in the u. S. As that mass shooting in louisiana has forced the issue back into the spotlight even before he touched down in kenya, the president was briefed on the situation about his Homeland Security is adviser. As you say the president had given up on control, and i have efforts failed in the president talked about t. Talked about his greatest frustration in the interview with the bbc. Heres what he had to say. If you ask me where has been the one area where i feel like ive been most frustrated and most stymied, it is the fact that the United States of america is the one advanced nation on earth in which we do not have sufficient common sense gun safety laws even in the face of repeated mass killings. For us not to be able to resolved that issue has been something that is distressing, but it is not something that i intend to stop working on in the remaining 18 months. The remaining time in office as one official told me recently they understand the political realities and the votes are simply not there. We are in nairobi, just to paint the picture of the scene here scores of kenyans were on the streets to welcome the president back to kenya. His halfsister was among them and later hi had dinner with relatives as he is getting back in touch with his rites, with a major address to the African People on sunday when hes expected to talk about that very unique african heritage. Jim acosta thanks very much. The case of the Clinton Emails takes quite a turn. Intelligence investigators say the former secretary of state sent classified emails over her private server. Any said she never emailed classified material and technically that is true but now the Intelligence Community has had a chance to review some of her emails. They are say some of that material should have treated as classified. New disclosures from the Intelligence Community. The Inspector General saying emails on Hillary Clintons private server contained classified information their rue view of emails clinton turned over found four of them had classified information, through one inadvertently released to the public. Inspector Generals Office saying quote they were classified when they were sent and are classified now. The problem is the information was never classified by the state department. Clinton may have not known she was handling information that should have remained on a secure system now they have asked the Justice Department to have a illustrate whether classified material has been compromised. It seems like theyre making a larger criticism of the state department handles classified pearls. Referring to the department of injures. Youre saying you compromised classified material. But we have had a very rigorous process internally and frankly sharing with other agencies when their agencies are involved. Reporter clinton said she handled all information properly when using her private account. I did not email any classified material to anyone on my email. There is no classified material. While she may not be the target the controversy has dogged her president ial Campaign Including today there have been a lot of inaccuracies maybe the heat is getting to everybody. Where she renewed an offer to testify better congress. We are all accountable to the American People to get the facts right. I will do my part. The Inspector General any Intelligent Community said there are potential hundreds of other emails who could have classified information. Nick merrill emphasizing once again clinton followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials, jake. All right. Complicated and confusing. Very. Joining mess to talk about this and other political news are dan pfeiffer and s. E. Kazuo matsui. Thank you both for this encore performance. [ laughter ] s. E. Do voters care about this . They all are united by the fact that Hillary Clinton seems to have put herself ahead of national security. I dont have to tell dan, the Obama Administration was concerned about having her work at the state department and cgi, people like blumenthal involved in state business. It looks like she kind of just didnt care. The same is the case with these emails. If it was coming from an unprotected server she may have done that so i think what voters care about is this very sort of you know deep commitment on the part of Hillary Clinton so sort of do her only thing, flaw the reels u. N. When matters of security are at heart there. Dan, it seems like the best friend that the clintons have is republicans overreacting overreaching. This story without question is it was initially reported likely leaked in an overinflamed way it was not quite true enabling her to swat it away. Im pretty confident 16 months from now theyre not going to think about email protocol as it matters, and, you know nothing has ever happened in july of the offyear has matter in the general election. What you can take from this is two things. One, this is a shortterm most notably, shes getting an important speech an important message, and all these know about is the email scandal. What it also does is show once again what is happening on the hill is a partisan witchhunt. Its not about anything other than trying to win the election. I think its worth pointing out that we are all talking about it notably baas the New York Times changed their headline and the link to this story backing off from it. Because hillary asked them to. Inspection numbs that published the pentagon papers against the will of nixon is not the New York Times that changed the headline. Because they backed down or because they got it wrong . The story was factually true. She didnt like or her campaign did not like the way it made hillary sound within a single sentence that they then changed. That should be deeply disturbing. Hillary clinton isnt even the president yet, and thats schiavo influence she has. I promise you New York Times, cnn doesnt change headlines when they got it wrong here. Everything they have said turned out to not be right. They were wrong, because they relied on partisan capitol sources. This happened to us with the benghazi investigation, when the Issa Committee leaked Incorrect Information and abc news had to walk it back. Lets turn quickly to the clinton economic speech. Lets play some of what she had to say earlier today. Today we face a choice between the future and the past. The republicans running for president seem totally unconcerned about the problem of quarterly capitalism. In fact their policies would make it worse. They would wipe out the new rules on wall street imposed after the crisis and of course they further stripped Worker Rights and weakened bargaining power. S. E. . Is quarterly capitalism the new sexy thing and im not aware . It is now. Really . Is this really what middleclass voters care about . I dont know. This is i guess her hook to say im one of you now, i have left wall street behind me but it doesnt seem like the thing to grab voters. Will it appease the left wing thats skeptical of her . Yes.
