CNNW The Lead With Jake Tapper June 9, 2014

House. Good afternoon and welcome to the lead. Jared and Amanda Miller took three innocent lives in las vegas on sunday before killing themselves. I can tell you that theres no doubt that they have ideology along militia and white supremacist and they equate government with fascism and they believe Law Enforcement is the oppressor and they are associated with the nazis. They pinned a note that said the revolution is beginning. The killers then ran to a walmart where they gunned down another independent victim. The killers took the coward route and took their own lives. The couple told their neighbors they wanted to commit the next columbine. Amanda miller posted to the people in the world, youre lucky i cant kill you now but remember one day i will get you because one day all hell will break loose and ill be standing in the middle of it with a shotgun in one hand and a pistol in the other. The couple had just moved to nevada but they had a checkered past. What more are you learning about this rampage . Reporter that is true, jake. We do know that especially him, he had run in with the law several times and that may be the reason behind the rampage that they went on here on sunday morning and just going out as coldblooded killers, killing the two officers and pointblank range and then taking down another man who tried to intervene. On the way to vegas, baby. Reporter this seemingly happy couple are behind the shooting rampage in las vegas that left three people dead. But they were anything but happy. Jared seen here crying about going to jail and missing his wife i just wish they could understand. Reporter the two claimed to have been involved in the standoff at Cliven Bundys ranch that made headlines a few weeks ago, where supporters gathered because they felt that the government was unfairly treating the rancher. Jared millers Facebook Page includes this post on saturday. The dawn of a new day. Theres no doubt that they are along militia and white supremacist. Reporter sunday morning their plan becomes clear at a pizza store about ten miles from the Las Vegas Strip and begin shooting. They had a backpack and i saw a gun in the hand and he told me to tell the cop it is was a revolution. Reporter the Police Officers killed at pointblank range, alyn beck and igor soldo, both with wives and young children. They placed a yellow flag on the body of officer beck and through a swastika on his body. And pinned a note to another body saying that this is the beginning of a revolution. What precipitated this event, we do not know. My officers were simply having lunch. Reporter but the couple wasnt done. They doubted across the street to this walmart where they encountered Joseph Wilcox at the entrance and shot him dead. Joseph died trying to protect others. Reporter police arrive, then a shootout. But before police can get to them, Amanda Miller shoots jerad and then herself. Police found multiple roupds of ammunition. They believe they were planning on having a massive shootout with police but because of some quick action, police were able to encounter them by going into the front of the al mart and coming from the back. They encountered them and had nowhere to go and thats why they took their own life. Police are looking into the visit at the cliven ranch. What are you finding out about that . Reporter police are looking into this. What is interesting is that dan simon reached out to cliven bundy and he says, there are a lot of people that came to the ranch. He cant say for sure that they were actually there. But while that conflict was going on, it was kind of a magnet that attracted people who had issues with government and Law Enforcement and thats what were hearing about this couple, jake. Stephanie elam, thank you so much. More than 57,000 veterans have been waiting for 90 days or longer to get medical appointments at v. A. Hospitals across the country. This is according to a new audit released today. It shows that over the past decade, tens of thousands of veterans who enrolled for v. A. Health care never got to see a doctor. Drew griffin and his team broke the story two months ago. Drew joins me now. Drew, this isnt just about wait times, this audit. This is about working at the v. A. And being told to falsify these records. How widespread was that . You know, thats what is really troubling if you take away from this report that im reading. Its the fact that the supervisors were telling people to lie about how to put down these wait times just to hide the fact that they were so long. It was a scandal being held in secr secret by the v. A. And when we talk about the secret lists, i want to read this to you. This is from the v. A. Report that it pressure was placed on schedulers to utilize unofficial lists or engage in inappropriate practices in order to make waiting times more favorable. Those are the secret lists, lists that were off the books and off the books for one reason, just to make the numbers look way better than they are. Now we know that the numbers are way worse than we thought. There was a bonus incentive worked into that as well. What was next for the 37,000 veterans that have been waiting for 90 days or longer . The v. A. Is trying to get everybody seen who wants to be seen. Clearly they have probably moved on already to find health care somewhere else but anybody who wants to be seen, they are going to get seen by a doctor or clinic and if the v. A. Cant handle them, they are in the works to farm them out into the private sector just to get the immediate wait lists taken care of and then its trying to rework the entire system, scheduling practices, et cetera to make sure this never happens again. And drew, theres another congressional hearing this evening. What are we expecting . Were going to get a briefing from the inspector general, the independent inspector general. I expect to hear a lot more questioning about criminal element involved here, whether or not crimes were committed, whether or not the department of justice is going to get involved in this and just what the extent of the lying was and what evidence there are that this was some kind of an actual crime, be it civil or criminal. Drew griffin, thanks so much. Coming up on the lead, its been five years since hes seen his family but despite being free from his captors, Bowe Bergdahl has still not spoken to his parents. Welcome back to the lead. Im jake tapper. The world lead. It was five years in hell. Were learning new details about the suffering, abuse, and isolation that Sergeant Bergdahl endured while a prisoner of the t taliban. He told medical staff that he was kept in a box for weeks that was pitch black and bergdahl still has chosen not to speak with his parents. What is the psychological damage after being beaten and treated like a caged animal by the taliban. Joining me is chris. Good to see you again. Youve been personally involved in the debriefing of released hostages. How can the situations change or even break a person, especially after five years . Well, thats it exactly. And i think that Sergeant Bergdahl was shattered by this. I mean, not just him but his family has been done quite a it about of psychological harm, also. Its hard to describe how horrific this was. What do you make of the report that he has not chosen yet to speak with his parents . Is that unusual . No. I mean, the amount of stress and the changes coming back, its been likened to have been all by yourself on a dirt road and suddenly being put in the middle of the worst traffic in new york city with everybody honking at you. The mental overload is very difficult and its particularly overloaded with his family because he knows that they love him and he has difficultly responding and is even overwhelmed by that much love. Cnns Barbara Starr reported that according to an official, private bergdahl who was promoted to sergeant is being asked to be recognized as a private, the rank he knew when he went missing. He didnt know that he had been promoted in his absence. What do you make of that . Well, part of that actually, its a good sign because its an attempt by him to regain who he was. And a very hard thing for people to come to grips with is that who they were before Something Like this happened to them is probably pretty much gone entirely. So he has a memory of that and hes trying to regain his identity. So i see that as a very good sign. Being kept in a small space for that long, one intelligent source told me it was like he was in a dog kennel. It can really eat away at your muscles and your bones, i would imagine, serious atrophy. What about the mind . Yeah. Every bit as much atrophy to the mind. Maybe even more in more ways and thats part of what is so overwhelming for him because in order to survive, he almost basically stops thinking and withdraws into his himself and so now not having been used to this external stimulation, its hard for the mind to try to handle. What do you think is waiting for bergdahl hes obviously when on a u. S. Military base. He might not know anything about the controversy surrounding his release, the stuff about the swap, his former soldiers, and other questions how is he going to respond when he learns those details . Well, all of this is going to be very overwhelming to him as well. Regardless of the controversy of the swap, Sergeant Bergdahl nor his family deserve any of the negativity directed at this. As a country, we should take it easy on this guy. He has more than paid for any bad decisions hes made. He has to come to grips with those consequences as well and thats going to be difficult for him. Chris voss, thank you for your insight. Thank you. One of the biggest questions was freed, besides how or why he vanished, was made by some of his fellow platoon mates that hes partly to blame for the six soldiers that were killed after his disappearance. It also doesnt have a clear answer and might never have one. It was initially shorthanded. Six soldiers searching for bergdahl. That is not accurate. Its much more complicated than that. But the mission that summer and fall always focused in at least some way on finding bergdahl and that these searches antagonized the locals, contributing to a deteriorating security situation. That also is according to evan buetow. The fact of the matter is, when those soldiers were killed, they would not have been where they were at had bergdahl not left. Bergdahl leaving changed the mission. I spoke with more than 20 members of the 500 1st battalion to determine what the missions were and where the soldiers were killed and how related those missions were related to the bergdahl disappearance. He disappeared in june of 2009. An intense search intensified in july. Some were told to check out the polling situation and on that mission two were killed by an ied. Sergeant Clayton Bowen and morris walker. This was not specifically focused on bergdahl but one believes in this rough part of the province had led to a more dangerous security situation there. The same argument is made about an explosive in another village where, on september 5th, Staff Sergeant Michael Murphy was tasked with handing out supplies to win them back over after that tough summer. Murphrey stepped on an ied and died the next day. That was a keep your eyes out for bergdahl while youre there kind of thing, one specialist told me. Other missions had more obvious connections to bergdahl. On august 26th, the battalion received information that there was a local clinic held hostage. The insurgent commander was as important about the mission to get to bergdahl, an Intelligent Service tells me. Kurt curtis was killed in the fire fight to get this intelligent leader. When men from the blackfoot platoon went the the village where bergdahl was believed to have gone after he disappeared, according to several, the soldiers were there to get a sense of what was going on and one of the questions was, is the village connected with the insurgents who it was believed then had transported bergdahl to pakistan. In the course of this mission, Darren Andrews and Matthew Michael martinek were killed. Six men who volunteered to put themselves in harms way. Each one with a devastating loss to a parent, a child, a wife. Actor tracy morgan was injured and why did the part of the senate vote to relax rules to require Truck Drivers like him to rest. Plus, shes untouchable in the polls but why even those who like Hillary Clinton want more democrats to run, coming up. Reporter sleepdeprived truck driver. Thats what they are saying is caused this wreck. It was just this friday, if you remember we first told you right here on the lead, about a debate happening about truckers rest rules. Saturdays crash is bringing that debate front and center. Actor and comedian tracy morgan remains hospitalized after surviving this deadly Chain Reaction crash on the new jersey turnpike saturday morning. Morgan suffered broken ribs, broken nose, leg, and femur. His fellow passenger, friend, james mcnair, killed. In the criminal complaint, prosecutors pin the blame on the truck driver. Thursday, a Senate Committee voted to ease a part of a rule currently on the books. The department of transportation says the move will allow truckers to drive longer hours. As it stands, once a driver hits 70 hours for the week, they are required to take at least 34 hours. That must include two mornings between 1 00 and 5 00 a. M. T
