California. New information still is coming in, but we know the shooter was a woman. Police say shes dead. And multiple people are wounded. The motive still unclear. Ill talk about that story much more with democratic senator, Richard Blumenthal and our correspondents are all standing by. Lets get first to miguel who is tracking the late breaking developments for us on this youtube shooting. What are you learning, miguel . Well, it was lunch hour when the shots started and the calls started to go into the San Bruno Police. It was the cafeteria area, outdoor patio area where the shooting began and within minutes, there was a Massive Police presence on scene as well as emergency services. Then it was a bit of chaos. With with very heavily armed Police Moving into the youtube headquarters. Over 1,000 employees there. That thousand employees were trying to get out of the youtube headquarters at the same time. Within an hour or so, they had set up triage areas. The Law Enforcement pace seemed to have lessened just a bit. Here is what the San Bruno Police chief, how he described the timeline. At 12 46 p. M. This afternoon. San Bruno Police Department receive d numerous 911 calls regarding gun shots at the youtube campus located on cherry avenue. Police arrived on scene at 12 48 and immediately began a search for a possible shooter or suspect. Upon arrival, officers encountered numerous employees flee frg the building. It was very chaotic. One victim with a gun shot wound towards the front of the business as we arrived. Several minutes later while conducting a search of the premesis, officers located a second individual with a gun shot wound. May have been selfinflicted. We are still working on confirming that. Two additional victims were located several minutes later at an adjacent business. This is the extent of all the gyres of our victims are unknown. They were transported for emergency medical care. But they are all unknown. We have four victims who have been transported for gun shot related injuries and one subject whos deceased inside the building with a selfinflicted wound. At this time, we believe to be the shooter, but wer still following up on that. And we have information those victims. One was a 32yearold female. Shes in serious condition. A 27yearold female who is in fair condition and a 36yearold male who is in Critical Condition. All of them have been transported to San Francisco general hospital. We also know that stanford hospital received several individuals from this scene as well. But it is not clear if they were victims of gun shot wounds or if they were just injured in the Mass Evacuation from youtube headquarters. Pretty terrifying incident when you hear gun shots like that at the campus. Thanks very much. I want to turn to our Law Enforcement analyst, josh campbell. Hes former fbi supervisor. How rare is it this was a female workplace shooter . Wolf, its very rare. If you look back over the last two decades, the fbi did a study from 2000 to 2013 at the Mass Shootings in the United States. And of 160 they identified. Only six were perpetrated by a female attacker. So its extremely rare. B obviously, there are so many questions we have as far as any possible relationship between the shooter and her victims. Did they know each other . Two questions i have and well learn this as we hear from witnesses and as the cctv within the building is analyzed and possibly released, is what was the ticktock here. Did the person go in . Was there conversation between the shooter and victims or did she just go and start shooting. Secondly, a big question for me, did she take her life immediately after the shooting or when confronted by Law Enforcement . Thats something thats going b to be key. I dont think as weve talked about over the last hour as weve been watching this that it appears to be some type of terrorism. You dont see the mass loss of life in a compound this big, thats something we look to. So many questions unanswered. Well continue to ping our Law Enforcement sources. Doesnt look like terrorism. The fbi issued a statement saying San Bruno Police is the lead agency, although theyre helping if it was terrorism, the fbi would be in charge. How long, josh, will it take for police to clear the scene . Its going to be a massive effort. If you look at the size of the compound and hear frg the police chief there, he indicated that you know, different victims were found in different places. As they go through to methodically clear just as a textbook response, theyre going to be looking for additional threats and additional victims. Are there other people out there that maybe they dont know about yet. Probably highly unlikely, but its got to be something they really focus on. Going from each side of the building throughout the building, floor to floor, in order to ensure they are fully confident there are no more threats or victims before they give the all u clear. Does it sound like a Workplace Violence incident that just happened to be taking place at youtube headquarters . It suggests that. If you look at these facilities, these tech companies. I was in the fbi with a roft them. These are buildings with large security presence. There is controlled access as far as coming and going. You cant just walk in off the street and walk into a youtube cafeteria. So that suggests this person had some purpose for being there. Which would suggest maybe she worked there. We dont know that yet. Whether she was a guest or how long she had been there, but still a lot of questions that are unanswered. Appears to be a workplace shooting because it takes place in a place of business and doesnt look like she was going and shooting just to kill victims indesindes. Were getting a statement in from google, the parent company. We continue to actively coordinate with local authorities and hospitals. Our Security Team has been working closely with authorities to evacuate the buildings and ensure the safety of employees in the area. That statement just comeing in from google. The President Trump has been briefed on the youtube shooting and tweeted about it a little while ago. Want to go to jim acosta. Whats the reaction from the white house . Yeah, thats right, wolf. The president did issue a tweet just in the last several minutes saying he has been briefed on the situation out in california. We can put that up on screen. The president in addition to that, offering his thoughts and prayers to everybody involved and thanking Law Enforcement and First Responders that are on the scene. But wolf, in term of this administrations participation in this, it sounds like at this point, theyre leaving it to local authorities out there in california and President Trump, we should also make it clear, he did make plenty of news today. Also raised a lot of questions. You saw he had this press Conference Today where he announced he wants to pull u. S. Troops out of syria while deploying them to the border of mexico. The president also tried to sound tough on certain points in russia in a way that would make kennedy and reagan raise an eyebrow. Meeting with the leaders of the baltic nations, President Trump made a questionable claim. That he set the standard for toughness when it comes the moscow. Nobodys been tougher on russia than i have. And you can, i know youre nodding yes because everyone agrees when they think about it. The president pointed to the decision to expel russian diplomat, but its still a difficult comparison for the president to make not only because of John F Kennedys confrontation with the soviet ewan youn. Tear down this wall. Theres also the president s wellknown reluctance to criticize putin. Mr. Trump said he may still enjoy healthy relations with the russians. Its a real possibility that i could have a Good Relationship and remember this, getting along with russia is a good thing. Getting along with china is a good thing. Get iting along with other countries, including your three countries is a good thing. Not a bad thing. So i think i could have a very Good Relationship with russia. And with president putin and if i did, that would be a great thing and theres also a great possibility that wont happen. Who knows. Okay . Mr. Trump then urged the president of latvia to avoid the u. S. Press. You can pick a reporter. A baltic reporter ideally. Real news. Not fake news. Go ahead. Another comment that might please the russians came when the president said hes ready to pull u. S. Troops out of syria. A decision that could bolster moscows position in damascus. Its time. Its time. We were very successful against isis. Well be successful against anybody militarily. But sometimes, its time to come back home. And were thinking about that very seriously. The president s remarks seemed to contradict what his own advisers were saying, that the u. S. Is staying in syria to battle isis. In terms of our campaign in syria, we were in syria to fight isis. That was our mission. The mission isnt over and were going to complete that mission. Then the president went back to an old campaign comment that he wirs the u. S. Would have seized oil assets during the iraq war. I was saying keep the oil. We didnt keep it. Who got the oil . Isis. A lot of it. Thats what funded their campaign. Mr. Trump seems to have a new mission for the u. S. Military, namely securing the border with mexico. Something that the president insists must be done until he gets the wall he promised voters. So what we are preparing for the military to secure our border between moex exico and t United States, we have a meeting on it in a little while with general mattis and everybody, its something we have to do. Earlier in the day, the president went back to threatenithreaten i economic pain on amazon. Amazon is going to have to pay much more money post office. No doubt about that. And the president didnt exactly give a ringing endorsement to his epa administrator, scott pruitt, whos facing a slew of economic questions. The president didnt offer lot of details when it comes to these moves on syria and on the border with mexico in terms of the border. While the president says he want to withdraw troops from syria, his top aides have yet to explain what that means or exactly when thats going to happen and as a reminder, we should recall that the president has often sounded open to policy shifts like immigration and gun control only to reverse himself hours or days later. Wolf. Jim, thank you. Jim acosta at the white house. Also tonight, the first person has been sentenced to prison in Robert Muellers russia investigation. The milestone playing out just hours after the special counsel gave us an extraordinary window inside the scope and authority of his probe and possible collusion between the Trump Campaign and the russians. Our Political Correspondent has been b covering all this for us. Mueller showed some of his cards in a new court filing in the Paul Manafort case. Thats right and you get a better sense of how broad and explicit muellers purview is. It includes looking into some activities that occurred before the Campaign Began as well as the finances of a former Trump Campaign aide. Robert mueller making clear he has the full blessing of the Justice Department to delve deep. Even if that means digging into potential crimes well before the campaign started. In a classified august 2nd, 2017 memo, Deputy Attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, telling mueller he should investigate allegations that former Trump Campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, committed a crime by colluding russian government if i recalls with respect to the russian government efforts to interfere with the 2016 election. The memo, part of a filing from muellers team defending their investigative powers and indictments so far. The filing indicate that is mueller is carrying ut robust investigation into russian collusion, despite the president s protests. The russia story is a total fabrication. Its just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of american politics. But it also sheds light on how prosecutors could link manaforts lobbying work before the campaign to possible crimes during the 26th election. In rosensteins memo, he gives mueller the authority to dig into manaforts payments from eukrainian politicians. That probe has already resulted in several criminal charges. Manafort is aiming to have his case dismiss edismissed, insist charges are outside of muellers purview, but they argued that interactions before the campaign are directly tied to probing russian meddling and prosecutors would naturally follow the money trail from manaforts consulting activities. In public, rosenstein has defended the probe, insisting its not a free wheeling intersurprise. We understand the specific scope, so its not a fishing expedition. The memo offers hint at the scope of the probe including rosenstein didnt want to make public. So as not to confirm specific investigations involving specific individuals. Most of the investigations and individuals names in the memo are redacted, leaving almost an entire page blank. Almost a shot across the bau baugh. Meantime, a dutch lawyer became the first person sentenced. On tuesday, a judge sentenced him to pau 30 days in prison and a 20,000 fine. Thats after he admitted to lying to investigators about discussions with former Trump Deputy Campaign chairman rick gates and a person with russian intelligence ties in the midst of the president ial campaign. Now in that sentencing today, muellers team made the case about how important it is in these investigations for prosecutors to be able to rely on witnesses to provide accurate testimony. They encourageded the judge to consider sending a signal about what happen ifs you lie to investigators. Thanks for that report. Joining us now, Richard Blumenthal on the judiciary and Armed Services committees. First of all, your thoughts on this youtube shooting. My hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones of victims and my thanks to the First Responders. There are a lot of unanswered questions, but thoughts and prayers as the parkland students reminded us are not enough. The woman who took her own life, the apparent shooter, obviously suffered from some kind of Mental Illness. This nation has no higher rate of Mental Illness than other modern industrialized countries, but we have a off the charts number and rate of shootings and it reminds us that we need to do something about gun violence in america. Lets turn, senator, to the developments in the special counsels investigation. Youve heard our reports. What insight does this rosenstein memo give you suggesting that mueller is open to go ahead and investigate a whole bunch of areas involving alleged collusion . This number is profoundly significant. Its a clear message that Robert Mueller is at the doors of the o oval office and hes knocking and hes knocking hard. On the issues of collusion. Which can no longer be considered a witch hunt or hoax. Theres a footnote that alludes to b possible obstruction of justice. What were seeing is the special prosecutor following the money very clearly whether it relates to to the activities of Paul Manafort with respect to ukraine and russia. Concerning Deutsche Bank and Money Laundering there and the investigation by the attorney general. Its going to continue. This will bear more results. This memo, huge chunks of it redacted all in black. The special counsel shlgs mr. Rosenstein said, im quoting now, committed a crime or crimes by colluding with russian government officials. Closed quote. Does that imply, senator, that the Justice Department used collusion as a crime . It clearly indicate, wolf, that collusion regarded by the department of justice as a crime. And a serious one and should be under gags by the special counsel. Theres no question and what were see iing is obstruction o justice unu folding bf our eyes in real time in many of the president s statements. In his actions such as firing comey. Seeking to fire mueller. And other kinds of deceptive activities, such at the statement he did after his son participate nd the trump tower meeting with russian agents. Were seeing has the support of the professional law enforcers. This memo was written by Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney general. Jeff sessions, recused himself. Does this now put the Deputy Attorney general at risk of being fired . It certainly kuz. That is a key question. Because the pressure is mounting. The special counsel comes closer and closer by the day to the United States. The threat to not only Rod Rosenstein, but the special counsel. Thats the reason i asked the potential successors
