Right now on your screen. For the first time oh, lets listen in for a moment. Hes talking. Weve been getting together for a long time. A hundred years our ambassadors have been involved in that program in the United States. Fighting together but working together. These statements speak for themselves. Ill tell you what. Id like to. Might not be easy, but id like to. Do you recognize this from many of your allies . Sometimes it seems america alone because it has adverse impacts. Well, i think i can say very easily that weve been very good to our allies. We work with our allies. We take care of our allies. Ive inherited massive trade deficits with allies. We even help our allies militarily. We do look at ourselves more pos tifrly than ever before. I think australia is a good example. Weve worked together closely. Recently had a big trade situation. We had a little bit of a trade situation going. Worked out well for both of us. And i think especially when it comes to those great allies, australia would be right there. Were very proud of it. Its one of our oldest and one of our best. We were talking about the battles we fought together. These are big name battles. And they were tough battles that we won every one of them. So its great to be with you. Thank you very much, everyone. Thank you. Thank you, press. All right. Well, reporters didnt waste any time getting into talk of trade and President Trump jumped in there talking about trade with australia and allies. But of course the all eyes on his meeting with president xi and what will be happening with tariffs. Well be following all of this for you. But first, we want to begin with cnns m. J. Leash. She is live with highlights of the debate. M. J. . Reporter good morning. Ten candidates last night fighting for precious time to talk about their ideas, to talk about their policies, and try to have some breakout moments. While we didnt see any insults personal insults thrown at one another, there were a lot of policy disagreements last night. Ten democratic president ial hopefuls tried their best to be heard taking on a crowded debate stage in miami. Leading this field, senator Elizabeth Warren. Starting the night fighting off questions that her plan could be risky to the economy. When youve got an economy that does great for those with money and isnt doing great for everyone else, that is corruption pure and simple. We need to call it out. Reporter focusing on the issues barically mentioning President Trump. Well aadios to donald trump. The biggest Security Threat to the United States is donald trump. Reporter but that unity fizzled into several testy exchanges. Julian castro emotional delivering his plan for immigration reform. Highlighting the father and daughter who drowned crossing the rio grande into the u. S. After waiting two months to get asylum. Watching that image of oscar and his daughter valeria was heart breaking. It should also piss us all off. If i were president today, i would sign an executive order that would get rid of trumps zero tolerance policy. Reporter the humanitarian crisis at the border and the policy of separated undocumented families igniting a texasstyle showdown between castro and beto orourke. Youre looking at one small part of this. Im talking about a rewrite of our immigration laws. Reporter let me tell you what. Title 18 of the u. S. Code, title 22 already cover it. I think you should do your homework on this issue. If you did your homework on this issue, you would know that we should repeal this section. Reporter new york city mayor bill de blasio also blasting orourke on health care. Would you replace private insurance . No. I think the choice is fundamental to wait, wait, wait. Private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans. When you talk about the copays, the deductibles, the premiums, the out of pocket expenses. Its not working. Thats right. So for those for whom it is not working, they can choose medicare. For the workers who i listen to youve got to acknowledge the system is not working for people. Reporter de blasio and warren the only two raising their hands in support of eliminating private insurance. Warren even endorsing the plan of another democratic heavyweight who takes the debate stage tonight. Im with bernie on medicare for all. Well, health care is a basic human right. Reporter senator cory booker getting personal about the gun control debate. Im tired of hearing people all they have to offer is thoughts and prayers. In my faith, people say faith without works is dead. So we will find a way. But the reason we have a problem right now is weve let the corporate gun lobby frame this debate. It is time that we have bold actions and a bold agenda. Reporter and army veteran hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard slamming on policy. We cannot keep u. S. Troops deployed to afghanistan thinking were somehow going to squash this taliban that have been there that every other country thats tried it failed. When we werent in there, they started flying planes into our buildings. So im just saying the taliban didnt attack us on 9 11. Al qaeda did. Al qaeda attacked us on 9 11. Thats why i and so many others went into the military. To go after al qaeda. Not the taliban. Reporter Amy Klobuchar receiving a roaring round of applause after jay inslee said this. We have one candidate thats advanced the ball. And we got to have access for everyone. Ive done it in public office. Senator, senator, senator klobuchar, i want to thats a false claim. Im fascinated by this. Senator . I just want to say theres three women up here that have fought pretty hard for a womans right to choose. Ill start with that. Reporter klobuchar winning over the crowd once again delivering this one liner about President Trumps handling of iran. This president is literally every single day ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war. And i dont think we should conduct Foreign Policy in our bathrobe at 5 00 in the morning. Reporter now, we are ready to do this all over again tonight. And it is going to be a very different kind of debate. A flurm of the top candidates will be on the stage. And the big question, guys, is going to be are the knives going to come out for joe biden tonight . We will try to get some of those answers right now. M. J. , thank you. Lets bring in david gregory, and frank burney. Great to have all of you for the post game wrapup. Frank, your takeaway from last night . I dont think it moved the needle significantly on this. Because so many candidates with so little time, its hard to do that. I think Elizabeth Warren had a spotlight on her. Shes the only one with double digit poll support. I think she used her time well. I think we may see the end of beto orourkes candidacy. Why . What do you think didnt go right last night . You know, all of them tended to treat the questions as mere suggestions rather than things they actually had to answer. I think he was one of the worst in that regard. All of them are reciting memorized bits. In his case that was more obvious. He just didnt look as sure of himself as the other candidates. That exchange with Julian Castro was one example. I get the feeling watching him because ive seen him in many town halls in texas and he can be dazzling. I feel hiss trajectory so far in this race, hes one of the only people that has fallen since the beginning. I think he lost his confidence. He was chosen as a straw man in a way by other candidates bill de blasio and Julian Castro who are about to speak with david gregory. The reasons they chose him i think is what came from this debate was this leftward shift. This complete leftward framing, perhaps, for the Democratic Party as they approach this primary season. I think its significant. I agree about beto orourke. That vanity fair cover which was a mistake. App sizzle and no substance. And Pete Buttigieg. Those two things happened to beto orourke and so he faded. I think the leftward tilt of the party, what you saw in the last two cycles was this kind of progressive redefining of the Democratic Party that was largely quashed by barack obama, then senator obama, then Hillary Clinton. And now its really coming to the forefront to where you have Elizabeth Warren who i thought showed a lot of fight, showed passion, and substantive specificity saying this is where the party needs to be on a huge issue of health care. I mean, its interesting. Shes talking about a corrupt federal government, but also that there ought to be that we ought to scrap private insurance and have the government do it all. So these are big, bold undertakings. Look, particularly in the world of donald trump, this is going to be big, bold writing for policy and politics. And i thought warren captured that. I thought booker did well capturing some of that. And even de blasio i think spoke out about obscurity to assert himself in a way that was powerful. De blasio was the foirs get the debate going on the issue of health care for all versus private insurance. And for what m. J. Alluded to in that they never attacked biden, they also didnt attack Elizabeth Warren. She out of the gate got the first two or three questions. But she was nowhere to be found on the issue of immigration. And really, that was an area where we didnt see much from her another all. We havent seen many policies from her on this area. But the fact other candidates didnt go after her and beto was the punching bag, i think it was a turning point for beto orourke. And there was a chance delaney was able to answer a question much more effectively than beto was. It was interesting when he piped up for a moment. He took a lane that i think joe biden will just dominate tonight. Which is a more centrist for sure but also electability and also talking about the current President Donald Trump who is largely absent from this discussion last night. I think that was the most surprising aspect of the debate. I also think that was wise. If you look back at what democrats did correctly in the midterms, those candidates who won house races in competitive districts, they did not talk about donald trump. They talked about what they were going to do in a positive vain for the country. I think all the candidates on that stage remember that lesson well. I think thats the you know, the opportunity for biden is to really own that ground. Thats what hes done so far. That his biggest argument is electability. To go after trump to take the fight to trump, who can prevail. Thats what the Democratic Party faithful want to hear. But to franks point, one of the reasons i think Elizabeth Warren has done well is because shes saying this is a vision for what the Democratic Party is in the future and what the democratic president would do. She combines that with being able to take on the president. So ill be very interested to see if that keeps up tonight. I have to believe that biden wants to really take the fight to trump tonight. Especially to try to ignore his rivals more. Lets talk about that, about if they were able to glean anything from last night and will they use any of it tonight. If joe biden or Kamala Harris were watching last night, what will they employ tonight . I think health care will once again become a big issue. Whether or not joe biden defends the obama act or not or whether he says take it to the next level. I think it was interesting to see Elizabeth Warren come out and say that she is with Bernie Sanders on medicare for all. It deflates some of the ammunition he may have tonight about separating himself from Elizabeth Warren. Of course many people think that shes taking away some of his thunder as far as polls go right now. Whats bidens test tonight . His test partly is just not to kind of say anything goofy. Because hes been thats his political persona. Hes been doing that a lot in the Short Campaign so far. Tonight is going to be completely different. Last night Elizabeth Warren has better polling numbers on that stage last night but they didnt treat her that way. I think tonight you are going to see the other nine candidates around biden treat him as the clear front runner. Theyre going to be criticizing him throughout the two hours. Okay. Thank you. Very exciting to see what happens tonight. We meanwhile will have three of the candidates with us on this program. Including google trend sent out an email last night that says searches for one candidate sparked 4,000 during the debate. Which candidate is that . Julian castro. President ial candidate Julian Castro sparring with his fellow texan beto orourke over immigration. Watch. The reason that theyre separating these little children in their families is that theyre used section 1325 of that act which criminalizes coming across the border to incarcerate the parents and then separate them. Some of us on this stage have called to end that section, to terminate it. Some like congressman orourke have not. And i want to challenge all of the candidates to do that. I just think its a mistake. And i think that if you truly want to change the system then weve got to repeal that section. Joining me now is Julian Castro live from miami where i know it is hot and humid. Secretary, thank you very much for being with us. Before we start with the tough questions, how much did you sleep last night . I have not slept at all. So i have two things going against me this morning. The humidity and that my body is discombobulated. Had a great night last night. So its one of those good reasons that i didnt sleep. Good night. Google trends sent out an email last night to tell reporter what is they saw in their data. They said searches on you spiked 4,000 . Why do you think that is . Well, clearly i had a great night. I with ent in there and the truth is before last night there were a lot of american vote who are hadnt in the opportunity to hear from me. The media have focused in these last few months on some of the other campaigns. I know ive been getting a good response in candidate forums leading up to the debate. Last night people saw that i have strong track record of getting things done. I have the right experience. I have a strong vision for the future of the country. And as you played the clip there, people want to know can you stand up to donald trump . Can you handle yourself . Can you hold your own . I more than held my own last night. Well, they heard you have specific views on immigration. One of those is about section 1325 of the legal code here. And at the risk of sounding like i didnt do my homework, its a law from 1929 which makes illegal entry into the United States a misdemeanor but a crime. You want to do away with that. What will that do . How will that help the crisis at the boarder . That will help the crisis at the border because its this law that was written in 1929 that is allowing the Trump Administration to incarcerate parents and then separate them from their little children. About 1929 to 2004, these border crossings were actually mostly enforced as a civil violation. When i say we should treat it like a civil violation, this is not something radical. Thats actually the way we used to treat them even though we had this law in the books. I have called for all the candidates to s
