The department of Homeland Security<\/a> has turned out extensive warnings on this, and the big question has been what can the United States<\/a> do beyond surveillance and preparation here, resilience in the United States<\/a>. The answer youre hearing, and you heard it again from john bolton last week, becoming much more aggressive with the russians themselves to make it clear they would have to pay a price. Is that message in this way being made clear . Its clear. The reason they talked about that, not requiring the president s direct approval, come from the department of defense level itself. John bolton, you heard david say, last week National Security<\/a> adviser of the United States<\/a> says we have opened the aperture on capabilities against the russians. Clearly that message is being sent. I think whats so interesting, there were many people around the kremlin who when trump was running for president saw this was a guy that could be russias useful idiot. Ill tell you 2 1 2 years in, they dont think hes very useful. And you know, you see this in terms of the significant expense that we have on defense, which is much greater than under obama, pull out of inf Nuclear Forces<\/a> treaty, 1,000 more troops in poland, giving military equipment to the ukrainians. Trump probably doesnt like all that, may not be personally ordering it, but its happening. I think its really interesting in addition to the fact were hitting them more on cyber than we were before, in the last week and a half is the first time ive seempb the russian state media is going after not just the United States<\/a> but President Trump<\/a> personally. Thats new. Youve got to see this from their perspective, not just the media in the u. S. Its fascinating, too, david, to look at that, if they go after President Trump<\/a> personally, russian media, whats the impact of that on this administration. Thats a good question. Its not entirely clear at all to us, if the russians have to pick a side in the upcoming president ial election that President Trump<\/a> would necessarily be their favorite candidate. Its no the that he goes out and says anything aggressive about the russians, quite to the contrary, its that his administration, as ian put out, has put together a fairly traditional containment policy for dealing with russia, of which the cyber element of it is the newest and most complex part, because thats the area where the russians are inside the u. S. Most directly. One of the things we noted in the story was that the new authorities that both president and congress have given u. S. Cyber command consider cyber to be a traditional military activity. They can say were not going to brief him on it any more than we would brief him on routine patrols in the persian gulf or air flights that would go over sites or something. They can say this is what we do as part of every day operations. My guess is that part of the president s tweet concerns there came from the fact that he was reading a lot of the details for the first time in this in the New York Times<\/a> as opposed to hearing it in his briefings. And the degree thats part of the structure and part of the reluctance of his advisers to take at length to him about russia for fear of setting him off is the question. Its not just the fear of setting him off because also in the piece you write pentagon officials write broad hesitation to go into detail with trump about operations and the fact he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials. So information kept from the president because there are concerns within the Intelligence Community<\/a> that he cant keep it to himself. Well, we saw an example of this, erica, in 2017, when the Russian Foreign<\/a> minister and Russian Ambassador<\/a> at the time came into the oval office. I think it was the day after you saw the firing of james comey, the fbi director. When that happened, the president described to them a fairly complex operation in syria that involved sensitive intelligence from the israelis. And he gave it all to them. We then published it as did the Washington Post<\/a> on the theory that if the russians already knew about it, it wasnt much of a secret anymore. That was one example. Weve also seen cases where Kristen Nielsen<\/a> before she was dismissed was told not to bring up a big strategy about countering election interference in front of the president. She could do whatever she needed to do but she was told, according to her account and the account of her aides by mick mulvaney, chief of staff, this kind of thing shouldnt be discussed in front of the president. Is the president a threat to National Security<\/a> . I wouldnt go that far but certainly hes the one that has ability to release information that a lot of people that work for him would say would be inappropriate and would undercut americas ability to negotiate well. Look, russian perspective again, this is a country in decline. Their economy is doing badly. Putins popularity has sunk despite overall control of the media. They blame the west. Like 2016 theres no question they are going to try to undermined the legitimacy of our election but its hard to mamg them putting finger hard on the scale in favor of trump. To the extent that also means disinformation and leaks on information is not just against the Democratic National<\/a> committee but from the russians is actually against trump and the republicans, it will be very interesting to see how he personally responds. The most outrageous story and yet it was in trumps it got forbes to change the network, got the editors on the last day to change the net worth. That was just one of five different incidents i found. The police chief is expected at that meeting to take questions from the public and were also told that the police speed up the implementation of body worn cameras. How do you feel about that, mr. Ames . I feel like the body worn cameras would help a lot in the communities and the officers should have them on. It was a lot of them that didnt have it on and a lot stood by and watched. Im glad there was a bystander there to record what was happening because i feel like that saved my familys life ultimately. There were a couple of discrepancies id like to clear up if we could between the notice of claim and incident report. The notice of claim you filed weapons said this incident took place may 29th. The Police Department<\/a> filed no incident report but, in fact, they did release an incident report that was filed on may 27th. So the discrepancy there, both information and the date, mr. Horne.
