CNNW New Day With Alisyn Camerota And John Berman June 17, 2019
Obstruct the investigation. As john mentioned last hour, having such a witness as
Cory Lewandowski
on television under oath offering that story could be compelling. I have a question about how that serves the ultimate end in terms of going farther than the independent special prosecutor
Robert Mueller
did in obstruction. And doesnt deal with the fact the white house may still assert privilege even if its legally dubious to do so. John, are you on team gregory, not sure where this leads or the winning team, team berman, which is that ultimately if the democrats want to draw focus to this issue, they have got to paint a picture, a moving picture, a
Television Picture
that america can see, which means holding a hearing where someone has to testify. A narrative is not enough. I think they need to actually move the ball forward with new information. What was in the mueller robert was damning but not sufficient enough to get bipartisan agreement that impeachment is necessary. Thats really the standard you need to get the the has the ability. Mueller had such a narrow vision of his brief. So conservative in his approach to the investigation. There are other areas open to investigation. In my mind, thats where the house should be focusing, new information that broadens the argument, not simply a narrative remember what one voter told justin amash at town hall that she didnt think he did anything bad until he started detailing excerpts out of the
Mueller Report
. I think if you hear more from people specifically in public hearings and not closed door hearings, that could change peoples views on just the details within muellers report. Remember, some of these people have written books. For them to say i cant, i dont want to come forward, or the president tells me not to go forward, its really hard to understand why they would do that now given they have spoken publicly in other venues. Thats true. How about don mcgahn, the white house counsel, who over his own reservations and objections cooperates with the special prosecutor and then says, no, executive privilege when it comes to congress investigating. I think thats right that getting testimony is important. I think theres another piece of this and we have to remember where we are in the calendar and who is listening to congress. We are really in the middle of a president ial campaign. The primary season is well under w way. Until and unless the democratic contenders is making this issue front and center, its going to be a peripheral issue. You havent heard biden for one talk a good deal about it. A few of the others, at least, tend to deflect the central question of whether to impeach. I think as the calendar moves forward, it gets harder and harder for congressional committees to command the nations attention on this issue. Just look, candidates say over and over that voters on the campaign trail arent asking about this as much. Yes, its a 76 issue among democrats. They have been trying to follow pelosis line, focus on policies and things that relate to folks in the middle of america, middle class folks and focus on that kind of agenda instead of simply beating up trump, which is why you need new information out there. Missing points of the
Mueller Report
cannon should be amplified by other points because people havent read it enough. House has new powers to get that out there and they should focus on that unilateral. Nancy pelosi hasnt eliminated the possibility ever, you still have a long time before 2020 as the democratic candidate and the pool narrows down. If down the road nancy pelosi does say now its time for impeachment given whatever we have heardf we do hear more congressional testimony, you may hear more of the
Democratic Candidates
as they become smaller and smaller focus on this issue. If we can, lets put up these internal polls from the
Trump Campaign
. The ones that dont exist. They absolutely exist. They are confirmed to abc news and others by the
Trump Campaign
itself, despite the fact the president calls them fake. That should tell you something in and of itself. Look, its 18 months before the election, no one is saying it will turn out this way. What does it tell you, david gregory, the president refuses to acknowledge they exist despite the fact the campaign confirms them and they have fired polsters that may or may not be connected to the lead. Everything that we saw that shocked and amazed us in 2016 about how citizen donald trump would run for president will only be exceeded by what hell do as a sitting president of the
United States
, which is to deny and deflect and lie about such things. Especially bows these kinds of polls easily dismissed as headtohead matchups. Thats not good enough. I think he was justifiable angry. Thats not the question. Why is it these are leaked. Thats what i was thinking. They are people in the trump world thinking youve got to stop the madness and we have to put this out there. Thats a problem and he knows that. He tries to hold on really, really tight. Only donald trump instead of minimumidesing and being upset about the leak would lead the purge. Again, it goes to
Something Else
larger, the effort that trump himself has made to elevate joe biden as the singular opponent at this stage. Its very good news for biden at this point. Two things from abc news interview. One the president hates polls that dont make him looking good. Two, he hates people coughing in a room during an interview. When youre focusing on the polls, i have a theory, again, why do people continue to leak in this administration . Why does he have such an untrustworthy group of people surrounding him . I think david is right. I think they are working out for him. This is a cry for help. If hes not listening to the polls, were going to do public and make him focus. In some ways thats the messaging. They said in the 6 00 hour, the other thing this shows us, assuming this is something we know, this is a president who doesnt deal well with bad news, cant take bad news. Its fascinating the bad news has to be leaked to get to the president somehow. Its not fascinating, its really, really troubling. Hes been telegraphing this for a long time. Month two of his presidency, february 2017, he said any poll numbers you see is bad news. Now hes institutionalizing this and shooting the messenger, which will not help moral inside the team. The firings will continue until moral improves is not
Winning Strategy
for team building. The denial isnt something a little bit deeper of a problem, for the organization for the country that the president wants to deny they exist. There are countries that get away with that, america is not one of them. Brought up. I dont want to gloss over this. I thought this video that come out in abc news overnight, video from
George Stephanopoulos
that we hadnt seen is extraordinary. In it hes answering questions about whether or not financial records will go public. Watch what happens in the middle of his answer. At some point, i hope they get it, because its a financial statement. Its a fantastic financial statement. Lets do that over, hes coughing in the middle of my answer. I dont like that, you know. If youve got to cough, please leave the room. You just cant. Okay. Sorry. Do you want to do that a little differently. We changed the angle. So at some point at some point i look forward to frankly, id like to have people see my financial statement. Did you see that head shake . He was seething at that. David gregory, if youre keeping story at home, violating the hatch act doesnt get you fired. Lying to the press doesnt get you fired or sanctioned in the wlous. You can spread bad information, denigrate john mccain and it doesnt get you in any trouble. God forbid you cough in the oval office. It is irritating. Theres
Something Else
i dont know if people fully appreciate. Everybody says that reagan or kennedy was a real tv president , this guy is a tv president. You know how you know . Somebody who is in the middle of an answer for a
Television Interview
stops and starts the answer again, because he in this case is thinking about a sound bite, not realizing they are going to play protracted portions of this interview. But the idea that he would stop and restart an answer means that in his mind it is so cinematic that hes thinking about being on television all the time. Pretty extraordinary. Not as though he said lets stop and see if mick mulvaney, if hes the one coughing, is okay. No. You see how frustrated he was. David is right. He is the producer in chief. Everything for him is how visually it will look. Berman doesnt like when people are coughing on the air. You can see during the commercial break, its brutal. Yes, it is. Its not just hes the reality tv presidency, also at the same time hes talking about how much he wants to release his financial forms, which his administration is fighting in every way possible and has done since the beginning with the doj releasing he doesnt need to real estate his taxes. The coughing got in the way of him staging liganother lie for oval office. He goes back to the cough and says, george, you agree with me, its irritating when someone is coughing. Back to the poll information, george said it, the idea that the president as we know will say black is white or white is black or this simply doesnt exist has a huge audience out there. If he says it enough times, to the point about justin amash and the town hall, people will believe it, which is why its so important for those of us in the media and journalists to keep pointing out what is true and what is false. People are going to hear from him something completely different. Brad, he said those are actually the numbers. They were the numbers months ago when barr the president did say what youre seeing is not happening. Im paraphrasing but close to what he said. Thank you all very much. [ coughing ] never again. Not on his show. We want to get to serious breaking news out of philadelphia where a manhunt is under way at this hour following a deadly shooting at a graduation party. This just one of a number of violent events in the city this weekend. Cnn live in philadelphia with these breaking details for us this morning. Paul. Reporter erica, now that the sun is out, you can see whats left of the graduation party, some peoples belongings, the loan red balloon tied to the canopy, its quite the eerie scene. It shows about 50 people gathered on the south side celebrating graduation when police say a gunman opened fire wounding at least six people, one of them fatally. Investigators following several leads here, police say they are looking into the possibility whether or not this was one possible gunman here. As youre about to hear from the
Police Commissioner
of the city, they are also trying to establish a motive here. There was nothing that suggested a fight, at least according to the people here. Again, we dont know if the shooter or shooters left on foot or left in a car. Were trying to get as much information hope fulfully. We did speak to several residents in the area here who say this is not the first time that the sound of gunfire interrupts their evening, there have been shootings before. In fact, just last several days, john, according to affiliate kyw,
Philadelphia Police
investigated at least 16 shooting related incidents. So it was a very busy and tragic day for
Police Investigators
here, john. Indeed it was. Were watching this very closely to see what else happens with these investigations. Thank you very much. President trump denying a new report that says the u. S. Is escalating its

says the u. S. Is escalating
Cyber Attacks
on russias electric power grid and has placed potentially crippling malware inside the russian system. President trump denied the report on sunday. Two

President Trump personally, russian media, whats the impact of that on this administration. Thats a good question. Its not entirely clear at all to us, if the russians have to pick a side in the upcoming president ial election that
President Trump would necessarily be their favorite candidate. Its no the that he goes out and says anything aggressive about the russians, quite to the contrary, its that his administration, as ian put out, has put together a fairly traditional containment policy for dealing with russia, of which the cyber element of it is the newest and most complex part, because thats the area where the russians are inside the u. S. Most directly. One of the things we noted in the story was that the new authorities that both president and congress have given u. S. Cyber command consider cyber to be a traditional military activity. They can say were not going to brief him on it any more than we would brief him on routine patrols in the persian gulf or air flights that would go over sites or something. They can say this is what we do as part of every day operations. My guess is that part of the president s tweet concerns there came from the fact that he was reading a lot of the details for the first time in this in the
New York Times as opposed to hearing it in his briefings. And the degree thats part of the structure and part of the reluctance of his advisers to take at length to him about russia for fear of setting him off is the question. Its not just the fear of setting him off because also in the piece you write pentagon officials write broad hesitation to go into detail with trump about operations and the fact he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials. So information kept from the president because there are concerns within the
Intelligence Community that he cant keep it to himself. Well, we saw an example of this, erica, in 2017, when the
Russian Foreign minister and
Russian Ambassador at the time came into the oval office. I think it was the day after you saw the firing of james comey, the fbi director. When that happened, the president described to them a fairly complex operation in syria that involved sensitive intelligence from the israelis. And he gave it all to them. We then published it as did the
Washington Post on the theory that if the russians already knew about it, it wasnt much of a secret anymore. That was one example. Weve also seen cases where
Kristen Nielsen before she was dismissed was told not to bring up a big strategy about countering election interference in front of the president. She could do whatever she needed to do but she was told, according to her account and the account of her aides by mick mulvaney, chief of staff, this kind of thing shouldnt be discussed in front of the president. Is the president a threat to
National Security . I wouldnt go that far but certainly hes the one that has ability to release information that a lot of people that work for him would say would be inappropriate and would undercut americas ability to negotiate well. Look, russian perspective again, this is a country in decline. Their economy is doing badly. Putins popularity has sunk despite overall control of the media. They blame the west. They blame the
United States. Like 2016 theres no question they are going to try to undermined the legitimacy of our election but its hard to mamg them putting finger hard on the scale in favor of trump. Instead, i think its going to be massive disinformation and attempts to weaken everybody. To the extent that also means disinformation and leaks on information is not just against the
Democratic National committee but from the russians is actually against trump and the republicans, it will be very interesting to see how he personally responds. Because so far every time theres been the opportunity to go after, to say putin is bad, trump himself never does it. I think harder to maintain that as we move up to 2020. David sanger, ian, great to have you both with us. Following new developments as

Donald trump the businessman and brazen tactics he used against journalists and wall street analysts who dared question his wealth all while he was drowning in debt. Former forbes journalist who has covered trump since 1908s, greenberg writes, donald trump waged a rece lentless campaign to build his open myth by suppressing the facts. Hed koch might have had the truth telling capacity of forbes magazine, the wall street journal, tv broadcasters
Arthur Anderson and casino analysts on wall street. Jonathan greenberg, youve known donald trump since the 80s. Youre one of the people he called and talked to as he was lying about his identity with john barrett. Youre that involved in the story. Is that correct . Thats correct. I have tapesen and its a surreal experience to listen to them after 35 years. Youve gone back one of the things i find fascinating, youve gone back and reviewed the journalism and reporting you were involved in for decades and what you found was this relentless, vindictive campaign. Tell us about it. It has been shocking and surprising. I started forbes, started with malcolm for years and through the 80s worked on real estate. Ive never known forbes to back down from a story. What i found as i looked over secret letters, similar to what he sent to
Michael Cohen related to his net worth, the editor that wrote the story, the first story to question whether he was failing before his bankruptcy was the subject of an investigation and threats by trump and bullying. The magazine backed down and changed its story and told them to say instead of trump was worth below zero that he had a network of 500 million. The reason they did it is because trump was threatening to sue. He was also threatening to expose
Malcolm Forbes with some outrageous lie he concocted, about
Malcolm Forbes bringing underage male companions into the hotel so they could drink and being so mad they werent allowed to drink that he called
Malcolm Forbes and said im going to do a hatchet job and put this story and say youre not worth as much as you are. The most outrageous story and yet it was in trumps it got forbes to change the network, got the editors on the last day to change the net worth. That was just one of five different incidents i found. Interesting. You alluded to it but found three unpublished letters intimidating and did push for this. May 14th, 1994 coverage, you want to see the result of this intimidation, this was a cover then. How much is donald trump really worth now . The original cover was going to be, is trump broke . So he would do anything, anything to make sure that kind of word didnt get out there. How far would he go, jonathan . Well, in the case of marvin rothman before that story came out in 1990 was the leading wall street analyst about casinos, new jersey casinos. Rothman said taj mahal will have trouble making 1. 3 million a day to keep profitable with junk bonds and debt. Donald trump called his boss and said fire him immediately until he says that the taj mahal unless he says he made a mistake, neil barski is a liar and its the most profitable ever. When he refused he was fired and banned from the industry which sent a signal to wall street analysts that allowed trump in 1995 and 96 to take his companies public, after going bankrupt, raise 500 million from the stock market, 1. 3 million in junk bonds and nobody said a peep because he silenced
Truth Tellers who might actually inform the public of what a failure he has been at business. The tactics worked. You noted after all of this his brand survived the problems, even thrived, because he wasnt concocting tales of his greatness, he was forcing others to repeat them or at least not contradict them. Where do you see that now in politics all these years later . Truth is like kryptonite to donald trump and
Truth Tellers are mortal enemies because they destroy his myth of success. Success as a businessman, success as a manager, success as a president governing. The only thing donald trump is really good at, the only thing hes not terrible or failing at is intimidating, bullying, suppressing the truth, and lying. Jonathan greenberg, thank you very much. Its a really revealing look back at decades of these tactics. Appreciate you being with us. Thank you very much for having me on. Shocking video out of phoenix. Get your hands off up. The couple in that video has filed a 10 million notice of claim against phoenix claiming the officers violated their civil rights. Joining us now trayvon ames in that video with his wife and children. And his attorney. We appreciate you being with us this morning. As youve heard now the mayor is apologizing in this post saying shes sick over what i have seen noting theres no situation in which this behavior is ever close to acceptable. As a mother myself, she says, seeing these chirp placed in such a terrifying situation is beyond upsetting. She goes on to say shes deeply sorry for what she went through, apologizes to the community saying she refuses to allow this type of behavior to go unchallenged. Mr. Ames, have you spoken with the mayor gal eggo. No, i havent. You havent heard from her directly. No. I notice this notice of claim was filed last week. The city has 60 days to respond. Has there been any response yet . No. If they dont respond within 60 days i can file my lawsuit. One of the things missed was the amount of violence he was subjected to. The police point add gun, yanked him out of the car, pushed his head into the very hot asphalt pavement, handcuffed him too tight. Yanked him up, i dont find his door hitting his head against the car, lined him up against the car, kicked his knee and he cant work at his job which involves physical week, punched him in the back. He was subject to a lot of violence. The same thing was done to the mother. The child yanked attempted to be yapgd out of their hands, ended up with dead arm. She was pushed head first into the police car. She gave her child to a stranger because she was so afraid of the police. The police chief should point out
Jerry Williams posted a video on the
Facebook Page said she was disturbed by the actions of our office. Mr. Ames when you hear that, what is your reaction to both what the mayor has said and now what weve heard from the police chief. The mayor, she seems like she is understanding what took place in that incident, in the video and the chief, it seems like shes apologizing but halfway. It seems like she wants to protect what the officer did instead of knowing that that was just injustice, that was inappropriate and it just wasnt right. She seems like shes not fully apologizing. The mayor is calling for a
Community Meeting tomorrow. The police chief is expected at that meeting to take questions from the public and were also told that the police speed up the implementation of body worn cameras. How do you feel about that, mr. Ames . I feel like the body worn cameras would help a lot in the communities and the officers should have them on. It was a lot of them that didnt have it on and a lot stood by and watched. Im glad there was a bystander there to record what was happening because i feel like that saved my familys life ultimately. There were a couple of discrepancies id like to clear up if we could between the notice of claim and incident report. The notice of claim you filed weapons said this incident took place may 29th. The
Police Department filed no incident report but, in fact, they did release an incident report that was filed on may 27th. So the discrepancy there, both information and the date, mr. Horne. There are some
Minor Discrepancies, but none of them are material. They are trivial. None of them justify what happened. You have to remember dravon was completely 100 compliant. He was concerned about his family. He didnt want any trouble that might threaten his family. He was completely compliant, always did everything they asked. Nonetheless, he was subject to this violence. Repetitive yelling of the f word in front of his children. All of these things cannot be justified and
Minor Discrepancies between our notice of claim and their
Police Report show they arent willing to be honest about what happened. Even if you took everything in the
Police Report, it still wouldnt justify what was done. We have to leave it there. Well continue to follow this sto story. John. A huge cultural event that has the internet on fire. Country Music star. Safe to say it was 2010, 10 years ago. I remember well because we talked at the time and what a big step that was. Nine years ago then, today arguably the biggest star in pop music is put out an entire video. Yeah. Taylor swift what a powerhouse she is and always has been. I live in new york but lived in nashville for 20 years and part of the
Country Music establishment and still consider myself part of that. We claim taylor. Shes a nashville girl. Her family lives there and her first reports came out of nashville. For her to take that kind of public capital that shes built not just globally but with
Country Music fans. A lot of
Country Music fans buy every single record she puts out. When she talks about in inclusivity and authenticity and celebrates, you know, the diversity of who we are in the world, its powerful. It changes and saves lives. Its interesting. Shes a phenomenal songwriter. I agree. She tackles so much. When i first heard the song, i made my kids listen to it. Theres so many great messages about how insane social media is, its different when you see the video. Its interesting to see her getting political ahead of the elections. Now putting out this inclusive video and that is going to start a conversation about where we are as a country. How helpful is she in that conversation . Its huge. Weve watched taylor in the last couple of years kind of rule out that musclearity of who she is. Was out last year shekt every g everyone to register in tennessee. Youth registering to vote went way up because taylor put out a link and said, you guys go vote. I think we will continue to see people like taylor, superstars, flex in this time. Its a really divided time in the nation politically. At this point, those of us in the advocacy world, were kind of like, youre against us or youre with us. Theres no more middle ground where you can say i love everybody, i dont judge. Thats old news. You have to either say you are for the lgtbq community or youre not. I know you guys know the stats. Ten women of color, trans women of color have been murdered this year alone. Violence against the trans community, in particular women of color, black women, is going through the roof. Right now its time to just lock arms and stand up. Everybody has to to. Straight allies, lgtb people as well. We have to stand up and say it with more force than weve ever said it. Just so everyone knows, we look at the screens its so good. Ryan reynolds was in it. I didnt see him before. I was watching the part. Theres a full on dance with katy perry. Like you said, that is news in and of itself. It is. Every time we turn there i see something, men kissing in the video right there. Theres a lot going on there. I think people will be decoding this for sometime. As we talk about cultural relevance, shelly, i want to go back to a moment with you in 2010, you were the first
Country Music star to come out as gay, openly gay, and we talked about it. I was one of the first broadcasters you talked to, i was abc at the time. I want people to listen to this moment and compare it. My truth is that im gay and i hid my homosexuality my entire career. Chely didnt think country could handle her secret. I would read liner notes as if they were bedtime stories. Nowhere in there did i read anything about a homosexual. First of all, its a great song. I play that. Thats on my playlist. John, we looked really good a decade ago. You look even better now, just for the record. Ive had a lot of work done. Chely, again, to talk about the courage it took you and now its come so far. Well, im not going to try to tell you that i wasnt courageous, because i was. I probably make me seem cooler if i said, aw, shucks, it was nothing. It wasnt nothing. I just got finished with shows and i always stay after and meet everybody. Without fail dozens walk up to me with a well worn book of mine and said, this book saved my life. When i decided to come out in 2007 and ultimately did come out in 2010, i had a goal that my experience, my sharing my story would facilitate some ease and understanding for at least one person. It has been really gratifying to be out but we do have a long way to go. Weve still got young people in small town america. They are looking for icons like taylor swift to tell their parents.
