Biden became president elect, and President Trump is still refusing to admit defeat. Yet thousands of his supporters gathered in washington, d. C. , to protest the election results, and last night those demonstrations turned violent. Officials say one person was stabbed, and at least 20 others were arrested. So listen, the president is in denial. He has no path to victory. But he continues to push these baseless conspiracy theories, these false claims, and President Trump has chosen his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to lead the several longshot legal challenges. And while trump focuses on his efforts on an election that will not be overturned, the coronavirus pandemic is surging in the united states. Take a look at this map. Yesterday there were more than 166,000 new cases, and it is the 12th consecutive day that the number has been above 100,000. Listen to this from the chief of disaster medicine at George WashingtonUniversity Hospital he predicts there will be an unprecedented surge in new cases after thanksgiving. But lets begin with cnns Sarah Westwood over at the white house for us. Sarah, this has been going on for many days now. Is there any sign at all that the president is even considering conceding in the coming days . Reporter yeah, theres really no sign of that right now. President trump has remained largely out of sight for the now more than a week since the networks projected that joe biden would be the winner of this election. We saw him emerge yesterday to go golfing. And on friday, he held his first public event, a rose garden address, where for a brief moment acknowledged at least the possibility that he has been denied a second term. But by and large we havent seen the president acknowledge the reality of his loss in any substantive way. In fact, he has vowed to continue fighting against the election results. As you fenmentioned, he asked president s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani to spearhead the voters underway in key states. We cant stress enough, there is no chance the outcome of the election will change even if the challenges were to prevail. Joe biden has a pretty substantial lead, thousands and thousands of votes in these states that he won, that President Trump lost, that blocked ultimately his path to reelection. This is causing some discomfort politically for republicans who are starting to mount some pressure on him to concede, to begin the transition, Congressional Republicans, for example, were pressuring the white house publicly to at the very least start giving president elect biden access to the same classified information that trump is briefed on every day. There are transition offices here in washington sitting empty. People at various federal agencies from the state department to the Treasury Department really twiddling their thumbs as they wait for the signoff from the white house to initiate contact with the Biden Transition Team. Reporter well, we know that many thousands of Trump Supporters flooded the streets of washington yesterday for a series of protrump events. There was the million maga march, somethings called the stopthesteal gathering, a false movement that has gained steam on line thats pushed misinformation about voter fraud. The Trump Supporters clashed with counterprotesters who had come to push backing on some of the farright elements that had joined with the protrump crowd. President trump was responding on twitter, i want to read you that, radical left antifa scum was easily rebuffed today by the big d. C. Maga rally crowds only to return at night after 99 of the crowd had left to assault elderly people and families. Police got there but late. Mayor is not doing her job. There were more than 20 people who were arrested in the skirmishes, and two Police Officers sustained injuries in those fights. Really incredible situation unfolding in washington last night. I wonder as Congressional Republicans watched what happened yesterday, watched although they say they do not the president s twitter feed, kind of egging this on, are they prepared to inherit and oversee this fomenting, this provocation when the effort to overturn the vote will fail in about 65 days with the inauguration, what are they going to do with this . Any indication . Well, this is the bargain that theyve made with President Trump over the past few years. Theyre willing to overlook his tweets, theyre willing to overlook his undermining of democracy in order to get some of the policy wins they believe theyve gotten under this president. Now President Trump is a lame duck. He does not have the ability to deliver any more policy wins for the Republican Party. But theyre continuing to stick with him. Theyre continuing to overlook some of the things that hes saying, pretend like theyre not seeing his tweets. In part because they are fearful that he is going to come back in 2024, that hes going to continue to lord himself over the Republican Party. Though its more out of fear that these republicans are not speaking out, not necessarily out of some sort of deal that they have with the president. So i dont expect that to change. As long as the president continues to have twitter, as long as he continues to hold sway over the party as he will even after he leaves office, its going to be hard for republicans to speak out against him even as a few realize that whats happening is completely out of the norm. Its not in line with what we do in a peaceful democracy where the transfer of power is a bedrock of our system. A lot of these lawmakers are realizing that they just to stay silent because if they say anything, the president is going to train that abusive twitter account on them. And theyre going to be the next target. Were seeing the lack of political courage from most of these lawmakers knowing whats right but not speaking out about it. And theres no question thats probably worsened by the two senate races in georgia coming up in january. It seems like the president is not only doubling down, but his lies about the election are accelerating. Hes now talking about Voting Machines and spinning con spirits theories. Hes put giuliani in charge of the legal effort, and giuliani himself has been spinning lies about about voting that have no basis in fact. What do you think is really the end game here given that people close to the president seem to believe that he knows that this is really over . Yeah, there really is no end game. Thats the issue with this president. They dont have a broader strategy other than just sort of surviving the day, continuing to live in denial. The number of cop conspiracy theories has grown. Theyve had two weeks to prove some theories and allegations of voter fraud, and say that have come up with absolutely nothing. That shows that there is no broader strategy. The fact that someone like Rudy Giuliani is in charge when he does not have expertise in election law, when hes not been able to prove that he has any evidence of election fraud, it shows that the president has a dwindling number of avenues to try to keep this effort alive, try to keep himself in power. Other than just sort of trying to survive the day and keep his base rallied and angry, theres not really much of a broader strategy here. The president has been talking to some of his advisers about maybe running again in 2024. If he continues to fight the 2020 result, that may give him the impetus to run again in 2024, that the Campaign Election was stolen from him, that hes running a campaign of vengeance against all of the people conspiring against him. Other than sort of trying to keep his political fortunes alive and deny reality, there is no broader end game or strategy. In a matter of weeks it will be clear that the president s avenues have run out and he has no choice but to leave office. Let me bring in the coronavirus pandemic into this conversation. And the last two days, friday and saturday, there have been 350,000 new coronavirus cases confirmed in this country. The president did tweet yesterday about wanting a new Coronavirus Relief bill. But thats the extent of his involvement. We know that nancy pelosi wants something thats broad, broader than what Mitch Mcconnell and Senate Republicans want. Is there any indication of if a President Biden would stick with the line of Something Big and broad in a relief bill with nancy pelosi, or will he any hints thus far that he needs to get money to people quickly and will be willing to push toward a compromise that weve not seen thus far . Thats one reason that these two georgia races are important. If democrats win both races they can go big. Democrats in general are behind having a big stimulus package to inject some energy into the economy as we wait for a vaccine. Now if the democrats are not able to win both of those races, then biden will have to show that he is a negotiator who can work with republicans, that will be his first big test about whether or not his presidency can deliver big policy wins working with republicans. Now the package would have to be much smaller because republicans are not on board with the idea of a multitrillion dollar package now. Theyre looking at something much smaller. That would have to be what biden would have to compromise with a Republican Party that all of a sudden is worried about deficits and debt and does not want to spend too much money. Biden would have to tailor his expectations and try to put together a smaller package to try to get money to people as quickly as possible after hes sworn in. Yeah. I mean, that seems like an urgent situation. On top of that, the virus is surging right now. I mean, do you have a sense that in the white house theres any desire to have the president really take more leadership over what is going on with the virus in the next several months even though he is a lame duck president until january 20th . The effort seems to be more about focusing on burnishing the president s legacy when it comes to the virus. We saw the press conference over the last couple of days where he talked about operation warp speed and talking about a vaccine. And hes pushing back against the idea of any lockdowns. He is really trying to burnish his legacy and make it seem like he did a great job with the pandemic even though it seems to be one of the main reasons why he suffered defeat. It doesnt appear that the president s reengaging other than a tweet saying, you know, there should be more us . More stimulus. It doesnt appear that hes trying to get hold of this pandemic. Some of his advisers seem to be board with herd immunity, so theyre not too concerned that the virus is spreading rapidly. It doesnt appear the president s going to be doing anything over the next coup of months to try and get the pandemic under control or reduce the number of cases that we have. Instead, hes going to be focusing on, you know, fighting these election fights, pushing forward these conspiracy theories about potential voter fraud, and really ignoring his role as commander in chief to protect the country from the virus. That seems for the most part, hes moved on from that. Burnishing his legacy on the virus while the virus is also surging. Tolu, thank you so much for joining us this morning. Theyve been meeting behind the scenes last week. Theyll be doing that next week and in the coming weeks, as well. Still a lot of questions about how effective they can be given all of the roadblocks that the Trump Administration has put up here. I mean, if you think about it, theres been no communication, no cooperation between bidens covid19 team and those within the Trump Administration. One of the key members of bidens covid Advisory Board was asked about all of that, asked about how these efforts are impacting what theyre trying to accomplish here. Our task force is really just gearing up this week, and so its been a little early for us to determine just how much of a hindrance its been to be able to communicate directly with the Current Administration officials. But the transition people clearly is on top of that. And its our hope that in the very near future we can start to collaborate with them as we are this is all coinciding with whats going to be a rapidly escalating number of cases over the course of the next months.
