Transcripts For CNNW New Day Weekend With Victor Blackwell And Christi Paul 20200404

Covid19. All of this is just kind of the Initiative People are taking and ingenuity people are exhibiting. This is new day weekend with Victor Blackwell and christi paul. Great to have you with us this morning. Governors, mayors, doctors across the country are hoping today will be different after days of new record numbers of people who died from covid19. Friday became the deadliest day in the u. S. Since the pandemic started. 1,169 people died yesterday alone. We lost more than 7100 americans to the virus now. Right now almost the entire country is in a shelterinplace order despite recommendations from top officials the president will not issue a national order. You see some of the states, eight states who have not done so yet. President also defined new guidelines from Top Health Officials to wear face masks noting hell not wear one. Theres another angle of the effort to stop the spread of the virus. Attorney general william barr are telling officials to expand their Early Release programs. After the cdc recommendation for all americans to wear facemasks the president added hes not going wear one. So, with the masks, its going to be really a voluntary thing. Can you do it. You dont have to do it. Im choosing not to do it. But some people may want to do it. Thats good. Its only a recommendation. Its voluntary. Cnn National Correspondent kristen holmes. Did the president give any further explanation as to why he will choose not to wear one . Reporter he was asked about that. Essentially he said he didnt feel like something over his face when he was meeting dignitaries and leaders in the oval office would work for him. But this is just the latest in these conflicting narratives weve seen since the beginning of the outbreak here in the u. S. On one hand weve seen these public Health Officials who are crying for people to Pay Attention and to take this seriously and on the other hand we heard a different message from President Trump and the administration. President trump saying at one point that this was like the flu, that the flu was more deadly than coronavirus so that people didnt need to be worried. Of course on the other side of that public Health Officials said that wasnt true. Another thing President Trump at one point said that the warm weather would kill this virus and likely be gone by april. Of course we now know its april and havent hit the top of the curve yet. Health officials have continued to say we dont know exactly when that is going to happen. They, of course, are working off of models but they want people to be prepared and to take this very seriously. Of course as you mentioned the very latest which is that cdc, centers for Disease Control guidance, that recommendation that americans wear some sort of cloth or fabric over their faces when they are in public particularly if they are in hot spots. Then you have President Trump saying hes probably not going to do it and make being sure to stress that not everyone had to do this. This is just a recommendation. So its really jarring to see the two conflicting narratives particularly as we hear these Health Officials essentially begging the public to stay inside, to social distance now to wear these masks as they try to flatten the curve. Thank you very much. New york city mayor bill de blasio says tomorrow, sunday is dday. What he means by that, thats when the city is expected to run out of their ventilators. New york saw its biggest one day jump in deaths yesterday. The state is now reporting nearly 3,000 deaths. Lets go down to cnns athena jones who is following the latest for us in new york. Good morning. What were hearing from mayor de blasio and Governor Cuomo by the day, theres still some degree of optimism, but they are just describing some very dire situations there. Reporter good morning, victor. Thats exactly right. These numbers like you just mentioned the biggest jump in deaths in a single day those are not encouraging numbers. Were obviously it will take several days to make a trend. While a few days this week it looked like some of the numbers may beginning to turn around its very clear were not yet at the apex as Governor Cuomo puts it. That could still be a couple of weeks away. And that is why were seeing a growing number of patients flooding into hospitals certainly here in new york city which has more than half of the cases of coronavirus in new york state. So a real focus on resources of all types. Hospital beds. Supplies. Things like ventilators and staffers. When it comes to ventilator, mayor de blasio said the city will need 15,000 ventilators total to get through the months of april and may and said for next week, week of april 5th new york will need a minimum of an additional 2,500 to 3,000 ventilators. Now this is being addressed, Governor Cuomo has signed an executive order to allow him to take ventilators and personal protective equipment from institutions that dont need it now and move to it places that do. For instance hospitals in new york city that are flood with patients. Institutions will have the ventilators returned or be reimbursed for the cost of it. Take a listen to what the governor had nor say about this issue. We dont have enough ventilators. Were doing everything possible, splitting ventilators, using bypass machines by this new protocol, using the anesthesia ventilators where the federal government can be as helpful as they can from the federal stockpile but in truth i dont believe the federal stockpile has enough to help all the states. Reporter and you heard the governor saying the federal stockpile which has gotten so much attention, the Strategic National stockpile done have enough. The president acknowledged this in a certain way in his press conference on friday saying he couldnt assure that new york would have enough ventilators. He said new york should have taken the opportunity to amass more ventilators some time ago, but, you know, were trying our best for new york. We have other states to take care of. Thats from President Trump. Athena, i want to ask you about the Javits Center. Thats turning into a field hospital. What do we know about the people being transferred there. Reporter thats right. Tomorrow, this is a field hospital. Its been in operation, the Convention Center a sprawling Convention Center on manhattans west side and originally it was not supposed to house covid patients, suppose to relieve the strain of hospitals by putting patients who arent covid here. You talk to people working in hospitals whether its a doctor in the emergency room or a nurse in the intensive care unit or a hospital mr. Straight orthey say look all the patients were seeing are covid. This hospital mr. Straight orthought it was unrealistic for Javits Center and u. S. Navy ship comfort not to accept covid patients. So maybe people who need oxygen but not necessarily ventilators. You talk to these doctors and theyve seen people coming in with other complaints, like appendicitis or a stroke. When they do that chest xray they are finding evidence of covid19. Lungs that have the tell tale signs of the coronavirus infection. May not be testing all of these patients but all of their lungs are showing signs of this. They believe it makes sense for a place like javits to take covid19 patients. Athena jones, we so appreciate the update this morning. Thank you. The cdc is recommending the voluntary use of face coverings when in public. Health Officials Say they do not want you to rush out and buy medical or surgical masks. Instead they want you to potentially make one from something you have around your house. Listen, most americans never had to make a facemask to go out in public, so the Surgeon General, jerome adams shows you how you can make things from things that you have in your home right now. Told it to the middle from the bottom. Fold it to the mid frl the top. Fold it from the middle again from the bottom and again from the top. Then two rubber bands. Oneonone side and one on the other side. Then you fold either side to the middle and you have yourself a cloth face covering. Its that easy. Its just surreal watching the Surgeon General teaching us how to make face masks. That was part of an old tshirt. You can use a bandanna or scarf. We have with us a primary care physician, cnn medical analyst. Dr. Matthew back with us. You are pro mask but for weeks the cdc, the federal government has told people dont bother wearing masks. Now they say we should but its for a different reason. Explain. Yeah. This is the bottom line. Three reasons why you should wear a maverick. Number one if you have an infection, no brainer. Wear a maverick. If youre taking care of somebody who is sick, wear a maverick. The third reason, this is where the controversy is with the cdc and w. H. O. I recommend wearing a mask for the particular reason im about to mention which is asymptomatic transmission, victor. About 25 of americans have covid19 and dont know that they have it. And they are transmitting the virus. If youre out and about, Grocery Shopping or walking and if somebody course, sneesz and now were talking about just breathing that you can get the infection if youre less than six feet away. To me its a no brainer if youre out and about we should all assume we have the infection and wear the mask. Hes saying 25 . We got that from the director of the cdc. One in four potentially positive without symptoms. How do you mitigate Something Like that when we dont have as much testing as we should and now people are going to have to fine a way to make a mask. Whats the Public Health approach to something that pervasive . You know, so, obviously the easiest answer would be testing, testing, testing. We now have increased number of tests available. Were not quite there yet. Were not testing as many patients as we need to. Obviously thats the easiest answer. If you know you have covid19, you isolate yourself. Because its still difficult to do that i still think wearing a mask would be one way of trying to mitigate this number of people that are transmitting the virus without really knowing that they are actually spreading the virus. So, there are still, i think, eight states across the country that do not have the stayathome orders, alabama next door to georgia where you are, where i am as well. The governor there announced one yesterday. Theres still these states that do not have them. Whats the impact of say South Carolina on the other border of georgia not having that stayathome order on georgians, on people in north carolina, or the other neighbors states . Reporter i think ultimately, really, as dr. Fauci mentioned many, many times, we really should have a shelterinplace for all states in the u. S. I know the white house is reluctant to say that. They are leaving it up to the governors. But its a no brainer if we all dont act together to shelterinplace were not going to be able to really decrease and even get to flattening the curve. So ultimately, my recommendation, as a primary care physician, is Everybody Needs to shelterinplace. We need to do this together and we need to do this in unison. Thats the only way we can decrease the transmajor leagues and try to even get to that top and flatten the curve. Dock, to lets get a couple of these questions from viewers. Heres one. Can we swim . Does saltwater from the ocean or chlorine in a pool kill covid19 . Back to the basics. The way that you really get covid19 infection is through respiratory droplets, somebody sneezing, koufrg, talking. No studies to show you can get it while swimming. Swimming should be safe. Next question. What is the age for seniors in this . I heard 60 and 65. Why not 55. What difference does this five years make for this situation . You know, five years, ten years doesnt make a difference. This virus is not discriminating. The faces cognitive individual 19 is everybody. The reason we mention 65 is youre likelihood of having other illnesses like diabetes, Heart Disease is higher as we get older. Thats a good question. Ultimately we all need to be careful. We need to socially distance ourselves and Pay Attention to whats going on out there. I think personally all of us reallier at risk for covid19 and should be careful. Last question. People cannot go and sit and eat in restaurants. They are getting take out and deliveries. How safe is it if the virus gets in your mouth and you get infected. Give us the guidelines you offer around take out and delivery. The story evolves every day, victor as you know with the virus. As far as we know, theres been no transmission of the virus through food. The reason for that is the, yes, technically all restaurants and people that are making the food are being protective of preparing the food, washing their hands, taking precaution. Technically speak this should not be an issue. If you have food thats hot, you know, we have shown studies the virus is deactivated or killed in hot food. If youre worried about the packaging when you bring in the food, wipe that down and clean it. Really at this point we have no reason to believe that take out food is unsafe. Doctor, always offering great information. Thanks so much for doing it again. Thank you, victor. I know you have questions and we want to get some answers for you so tweet me victorblackwell or christi paul. Well take questions on our instagram pages. Theres a woman in maine who is showing us how to be a hero with a little help from mans best friend. Take a look at this. We think it goir stohit the first and pick up everything we need. Then we make stops along the way, giving dogs breaks in between. Her fiancee and another kennel helper are picking up groceries and other supplies for elderly people. Traveling between 50 and 75 miles a day on a sled. 75 miles a day she goes so she can make sure people have food. Team of dogs has raced competitively for the last couple of years. President trump also ended that Global Health Security Unit within the white house. The president and his administration was very slow to move on this virus. President trump has fired another key figure thats tied his impeachment. The president got rid of Michael Atkinson last night. Atkin sopranos told congress about the whistleblower complaint that led to the president s impeachment. Now this is just the latest case of the Trump Administration removing officials who played some role in the impeachment. Joining us now Cnn National Security analyst. Let me first talk to you about the reaction from democrats on capitol hill. Congressman adam schiff, at a time when our country is dealing with a national emergency, the president s dead of night decision puts our country and National Security at even greater risk. We have a statement from nancy pelosi saying the president Must Immediately cease his attacks on people who keep america safe. What is your reaction to this firing .
