CNNW New Day Weekend With Victor Blackwell And Christi Paul June 29, 2019

Kim jongun at the dmz tomorrow, would you step across the border into north korea . Sure. I would. I would. I would feel very comfortable doing that. This is new day weekend with Victor Blackwell and christi paul. Good saturday morning to you. Theres a lot going on. Were starting with President Trump. Now on the way to south korea. And what could be an historic meeting with north Korean Leader kim jongun. The president tweeted an invitation to meet kim jongun at the dmz for a handshake. Uhhuh. Or maybe more. He says he would now consider, think about this, he would consider stepping across the border into north korea. Thats something no other president has ever done. Now, theres a lot more coming out of this hour 14minute News Conference from the president. President trump said trade talks with back on with china with now tariffs on hold. He pushed back on the idea that he was joking about election meddling with russian president Vladimir Putin, and he said the murder of Jamal Khashoggi made him angry, while defending his relationship with the man the cia says ordered the murder. Joining us, White House Correspondent abby phillip. Abby, the president made a lot of news, but there could be this major moment thats coming if kim jongun responds to that tweeted invitation. Reporter thats right. A lot of news from President Trump in that press conference. Well start with that. What could be a historic moment if kim jongun accepts President Trumps invitation to meet him at the dmz, the demilemilitariz zone, not far from here in seoul. And President Trump is also saying that he would be willing to go over into north korea, step foot on to north korean soil, and he would feel comfortable doing that. Listen to him talking about what could happen tomorrow. If you do meet kim jongun at the dmz tomorrow, would you step across the border into north korea . Sure, i would. I would. Id feel very comfortable doing that. I would have no problem. Reporter so while we wait for whether or not that will happen, there are also a number of other pieces of news the president made. And on china, on trade, this is one of the big things that he was trying to accomplish in this meeting, the president had a dinner with chinas president xi jinping where they were trying to reset the relationship as it relates to trade. The president made news by saying he is not going to put new tariffs on china, basically calling it a bit of a truce as they try to restart the talks. Listen. We will be continuing to negotiate, and i promise that for at least the time being were not going to be lifting tariffs on china. We wont be adding an additional, you know, tremendous amounts of we have i guess 350 billion left which could be taxed. So it could be tariffed. Were not doing that. Were going to work with china on where we left off to see if we can make a deal. Reporter so this is by no means a breakthrough. But for u. S. Markets, for farmers, for other Business Leaders in the United States, it will be good news that there is not on the horizon 350 billion in tariffs on chinese goods coming down the pike. It still seems that they are still quite far apart in terms of resolving some of the major issues and coming up with a grand deal that President Trump has been seeking. In the meantime, there was also another piece of news from President Trump as he met with saudi arabias Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman yesterday as part of the g20 meetings. He was asked did you raise the death of Jamal Khashoggi, the journalist who was killed in a consulate in turkey. And President Trump defended his positive relationship with the saudis and said he did, in fact, raise that issue. Theres a lot of things happening. At the same time i will say nobody said, nobody so far has pointed directly a finger at the future king of saudi arabia. There are large numbers of people being prosecuted. Hes very angry about. It hes very unhappy about it. And i did mention it to him very strongly. And he answered strongly. But theyre prosecuting large numbers of people. That was a bad event. Reporter i had to correct something here that President Trump said. He said no one has pointed the finger at the crown prince. That is not true. Quite a few people are saying that Something Like this could only have happened with his okay. So many of those people who are implicated in that murder are tied to the crown prince, as well. But as you can see there, President Trump weighing in on a wide range of issues. One more thing, he talked about that democratic debate there week, especially the one involving joe biden and Kamala Harris. The president somehow decided to defend joe biden in that exchange with Kamala Harris. He said that he didnt think Kamala Harris did as well as he thought he did. He also didnt think that joe biden did as poorly as everybody thought he did. A little bit of the president putting his finger on the scale there in that race and tweaking the democrats. But i think its clear that President Trump has been watching that even as hes been overseas dealing with a lot of thorny international issues. Yeah. Very good observation. He said i think biden was hit harder than he should have been hit, as well, adding that. Appreciate it so much. Thank you. President trump says that he may meet again with north Korean Leader kim jongun. It started with this twitter diplomacy. Heres the tweet from the president i will be leaving japan for south korea with President Trump moon. While there, if chairman kim of north korea sees this, i would meet him at the border, dmz, just to shake his hand and say hello, question mark, explanation point. Joining me is aaron david miller, former state department negotiator and commentator. Errol lewis, political commentator for spectrum news. Errol, let me start with you. The president just asked to meet kim jongun with the taushlness that i call my the casualness that i call my friends or text them and say hey, lets meet for tacos. Is it plausible to think it is what it is on its face, that there is no kind of background work to see if there will be this meeting, or the president just tweeted out, hey, if you see this, meet me at the dmz . Some of the reporting suggests that a secret and undidnt closed meeting to undisclosed meeting to the dmz is on the calendar, and this tweet is music to the dictators ears. Something that this repressive leader wants, for the president to normalize him and act as if hes somebody that the president of the United States, the leader of the free world, would go out of his way and go up to the border of a repressive regime where there are an estimated 200,000 people in captivity, Political Prisoners subjected to torture, execution, physical abuse, just to shake the dictators hands, its almost unthinkable. You know, this is what he said. And i imagine this is what he might do. Live pictures to the right of the screen here. There is air force one landing in seoul, south korea, after about a 90minute flight after the president s News Conference this morning in osaka. This is going to be, of course, a meeting with moon jaein, president of south korea. And there could be that meeting with kim jongun, as were discussing. And aaron david miller, lets bring you into the conversation here. If the reporting is accurate and there were behindthescenes negotiations and planning for the meetings at the dmz, whats the virtue in trying to convince the world that the president just sent out a tweet and say, hey, meet me at the dmz . You know, a lot of this trip is driven by what i call the summit of the vanities. Clear with mr. Putin thats the case. The president thinks his persona, his own needs and interests first. With kim i think its very clear. I think errols right, its a clear victory for kim jongun who has made very little compromise on the Nuclear Issues or on human rights. But for the president , i think its even more important because he really believes that kim, not the iran agreement, certainly not Vladimir Putin, is his ticket into the history books. He changed fundamentally changed the conversation with respect to north korea. And i think he deserves credit for that. But i think he really does believe by keeping kim on the string, by flattering hit, by stepping into north korea, that in fact he preserves the option of a credible agreement at some point during the course of his presidency that would clearly by any standard win him, win him the nobel. It would be quite interesting, as well, if President Trump grabbed president moon and the three leaders had a trilateral. Frankly, that would be an American Interest because it really is in our interests to foster a much better relationship between these two leaders to obtain security and stability on the peninsula. The significance of the possibility that the president could take that step into north korea. We saw kim jongun and moon jaein take that step a couple of months ago over the border back and forth into their respective countries. This president says, sure, id have no problem with that. Yeah. It was so casual. It was startling, victor. Look, it would be such a wonderful thing if he could step into north korea and step back with some of the human rights prisoners that normally one would expect the american president to at least be concerned about or express concern about. If it improves nuclear diplomacy, you know, all to the better. Its unclear whether or not thats going to happen. Frankly, theres no evidence that thats going to happen. Lets talk about china now. This muchanticipated meeting between president xi of china and President Trump. The president , President Trump says that hes agreed not to increase tariffs on 350 billion of imports from 10 to 25 . He also says that huawei, the Chinese Telecom giant, u. S. Companies can sell goods to w huawei, banned from selling products in the u. S. , the government has determined that theres reasonable evidence to believe that huawei has been involved in the activities contrary to the National Security or Foreign Policy interest in the United States. How can we walk back this in trade . How does the president reconcile any of the contradictions that dove most of what he does politically . The summit of the vanities. He thinks primarily about what is good for him at the moment. Most china experts predict thursday will be no breakdown and breakthrough. Thats essentially what happened. The huawei thing is the a government to the chinese. I think the president sees it as dangling an incentive to xi in the event when talks begin to see if in fact they can reach a deal on trade. Again, very much the president s persona, the president s ego and president s interests often put above the National Interest. Again, on the right side of the screen, this is air force one just landed in seoul, south korea. Were waiting for the president to deplane. Of course, weve got that live picture. Youll see that if the president decides to walk over to the cameras, as he often does. We will see that, as well. Errol, back to you on china. One of the claims the president made today is that the chinese will start buying tremendous amounts, in his characterization, of Agricultural Products from u. S. Farmers. He says that hes helping the farmers by watch this taking 16 billion of the tariffs, which the president argues are paid by china but they are not, theyre paid by u. S. Companies and then, in most cases, u. S. Consumers, and giving that to the farmers in aid. Fact check that for us. The president thinking of taking the tariff money and handing it to the farmers, everybodys good. Yeah, no, thats not actually how its going to work at all. In fact, what were more likely to see and what i see the president signaling here is that hes going to want all of this resolved and stabilized. I think, you know, well have a short week in the markets next week, but theyll probably be some kind of favorable move. A little bit of a pop because of the talk about stabilizing this entire relationship. The president doesnt want this hanging over his head going into the election year. I think hes going to reach whatever kind of deal he can, walk back some of the trade talk, hes done enough that he can go back to his base and say, im talking tough with china. Were not going to let them walk over us, and all of the kind of rhetoric that weve heard from him for the last several years. But in the end, hes going to make the relationship as normal as possible to make sure that he has a healthy economy going into the election year. The healthy economy, the transactional relationship also at the center of the narrative with saudi arabia, aaron. The president saying today that he was horrified, im parafriesing here, by paraphrasing here, by the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a u. S. Resident, Washington Post columnist, but then immediately went in to describing the economic relationship with mbs, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. The president continuing the narrative that, yes, thats terrible, but look at the money. Yeah. Well, you know something, this is what i call the great bamboozle. Think about it, his four predecessors and the first four went to canada or mexico. This guy goes to saudi arabia. Hes made a judgment, in my sense wrongly. He made a judgment that the saudis are the hook on which he wants to hang americas strategic hat. And the reality is theyre not confronting the iranians. Theyre expanding opportunities for iranian involvement in yemen and in qatar. Theyre not doing much, frankly, with respect to israelipalestinian peace. Oil prices, its in their own interests to keep prices and share low. Eight months ago, Kim Yong Chol walks into the saudi consulate Jamal Khashoggi walks into the saudi consulate to his horrific, horrific death. Yet the cia reports, the media didnt have confidence that the crown prince ordered the killing. The u. S. Special envoy on torture almost reached the same conclusion. Mr. Trump whistles by the graveyard on this one. No accountability, no accounting, and, in fact,ne enabling the coverup thats gone on for eight or nine months. And there will be no change in trumps attitudes toward the saudi. The crown prince has bamboozled him. He finds great advantage. Arms deals, money, the glory of kings, all of that appeals to his ego. And in his view, the American National interest. He was very complimentary, errol, of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. And the relationship has always been a challenging one to balance the relationship that was reserved to energy, arms sales, and the rest. This president congratulated him. And also in this News Conference said that what hes doing with women has been tremendous. Live pictures here of the president deplaning in seoul, south korea. Of course, hell be meeting with moon jaein, the president of south korea. There is that invitation that is out there to kim jongun. And weve heard from the foreign minister of north korea in which they say that this invitation from the president sent via twitter last night was, quote, very interesting suggestion there, but they say theyve not received an official proposal. The casual way within which the president has invited kim jongun to meet him at the dmz, the North Koreans are asking for a bit more formality, i guess, or maybe theyre both playing coy because there is the reporting that there has been some underground, behindthescenes effort to make this meeting happen. Maybe the president just wants the rest of the world to believe that he can send a tweet and invite the dictator of north korea to the dmz and there he will meet him. The president meeting with officials there on the ground and then hell start off on his day. Local time, 7 18 p. M. Cant imagine there will be too much on the itinerary tonight as the president has had a long day. Let me come back to you on mbs, errol. The president s compliments about mbs being a reformer in saudi arabia. That was the narrative at the start of this administration. And when mbs became the crown prince. But that seems to have changed over the last several months and years. Thats right. Its been mixed signals to say the least. For example, a lot of attention was paid to saudi arabia, finally allowing women to drive on their own. Then the women who led the movement were subjected to a crackdown by the crown prince. We also have to keep in mind that any hopes of stability that might be provided by a strong relationship with the saudi regime are greatly undermined by their venturism in yemen, the worlds greatest humanitarian crisis at this point where youve got hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced. I mean, its an absolute catastrophe. You know, there are no good choices. I talk to a lot of middle east experts. They say there were never any good choices in that particular part of the world. But that the set of choices that the administration has made in this case, you can see tha
