Louisiana. Now the democratic side. Bernie sanders won in nebraska and kansas but Hillary Clinton scored a major win in louisiana. Topping sanders by 50 points there. Trump and clinton continue to lead in the all important delegate counts. Clinton now 1131. Sanders with 479. Donald trump maintains his lead. And the election calendar is at a critical point. Today there are two more contests. Democrats many maine and republicans from puerto rico. Jim acosta , has more on trump. Reporter trump declared victory in two of the four contests up for grabs after winning in louisiana and kentucky. He said that was a testament to the organization hes put together and also to the movement hes leading in this country. Trump said the victory for ted cruz in maine was due to the fact he was born in canada. As for his other big rival, marco rubio, donald trump suggested he should drop out. Mere is what he had to say. I think marco rubio had a very very bad night. And personally id call for him to drop out of race. I think it is time now that he drop out of race. I really think so. You know, i dont think he can get up tonight and rant and rave and oh he comes in third. Fourth. Every time he comes in third or fourth he says you have to be able to win. And he has not been able to win and i think it is time he drops out. Trump also defended the level of discourse hes bricking. Saying the occasional scuffles that break out at his rallies are due to the fact that his events are larger than those of the other candidates. Cnn west palm beach, florida. And donald trump appears to be taking a break from the campaign trail today. His public schedule is empty this sunday. A rally in North Carolina tomorrow. In me. Ted cruzs path to the nomination, has always been evangelicals. He was supposed to do well in the south. But for him to do well in maine last night and kansas as well certainly gives him fuel. We heard trump call for rubio to concede defeat. We understand why cruz wants rubio out but it seems counterintuitive trump would want one less competitor divide, i guess consolidating the anti trump voed. If you look at the path for the nomination for trump. If hes able photo go in march 15th and is able to win florida and is able to win ohio, you can effectively say that the race is over because it would be almost impossible for the others to catch up to. Marco rubio staying in the race in florida would be good for ted cruz. Because perhaps if hes able to win florida it would zprooif trump of that victory. Last night Bernie Sanders racked up two wins to Hillary Clintons one. But the win in louisiana was so lopsided she wiped out of advantage he earned in the two states. There are two ways for this ways. Delegates and momentum. And Bernie Sanders needed a couple wince last night and did so. A large African American population in louisiana, which Hillary Clinton does well with. Bernie sanders does not do well with in many ways when you boil it down to it was kind of a split. I wonder as we look forward in the calendar and bigger states come, are we seeing any momentum, any progress in Bernie Sanders effort to make inroads into minority communities . A couple of things. The big misconception i think is that African Americans dont like beshds. I dont think that is true at all. What i think is true is they dont know Bernie Sanders. And if you look at his policy proposals in fact they probably align very well with urban communities. With his ability to say the government needs to go out and help people and lift them up. Hillary clinton is a known quality and go back to her husband in 1992 wh. Hillary clinton was going to win the shout because of the African American vote. The month of march might be Hillary Clinton. Bernie sanders thinks april andplay is the month of Bernie Sanders. And when we look at the delegate count, we are talking about delegates for that pledge delegates which is what you win in a conus but also the super delegates and the Bernie Sanders people will say once we start winning those super delegates are going to start peeling off and those arent real support right now. I dont necessarily agree with it but that is what they will say. How big does he need to have to. He needs to do well in new york and pennsylvania. He needs to do well in wisconsin. He needs to start winning. Thats the bottom line. Thank you so much. Coming up next weve got Hillary Clinton and the question is, is she unstoppable . Some are asking that question. We just heard from mark. Can Bernie Sanders gain enough momentum over the next couple of months to take the lead here . Plus, show me the money . Twhaz the mayor here in flintmy is saying to leaders across the state and across the country. This city needs cash. What needs to be done to fix the water crisis . Com so now im not being perky, telling you that drivers that switch to progressive save an average of 548 whoo i mean, whoo. Bernie sanders, takes kansas and nebraska in Super Saturday voting. Hillary clinton hits back with a huge win in louisiana. Well today democrats will be voting rather caucusing in maine. Brianna keilar in flint is here with me, shes at the site of tonights democratic president ial debate. Good morning. And i wonder with a caucus on the calendar and we know Bernie Sanders does well with with this demographic, what is the expectation from the clinton camp. Right. And it is in new england, him being from vermont. I think the Clinton Campaign thinks Bernie Sanders really has a shot at the main caucuses and i dont think they are really worried too much about it and pointing to what happened on Super Saturday. There were three states up for grabs. Bernie sanders won two, Hillary Clinton won one. When you break it down for the math, Hillary Clinton actually did better. She won louisiana which has almost as many delegates as nebraska and kansas combined. And she really blew Bernie Sanders out of the water in louisiana. His edge in nebraska wasnt quite as large as her margin in louisiana. So overall what she ended up doing was widening her delegate lead. And the line that you are hearing over and over thats being emphasized from the campaign, victor s they say her delegate lead over Bernie Sanders at this point is larger than any barack obama had over her in 2008. Implicit in that statement is they county think Bernie Sanders can win the nomination. So they are saying that privately they feel that way but publicly they are saying it would be very difficult for him to win the nomination. Setting up a big night with tonights debate. I also want to ask you about your conversation with karen weaver t mayor of flint. She said there is a specific need, i think we know the over arching need to bring potable clean water back to the community but what else . She said basically show me the money. I said the candidates are coming to flint tonight. And a lot of what weve heard them saying is i think casting blame. Weve heard Bernie Sanders say that governor schneider needs to do. Hillary clinton has said over and over this isnt excusable. But both have not laid out specifics on what they would coand that is what i talked to her about. We continue to need water and filters but weve really got to look at longterm solutions and what it is the people of flint deserve to have as a result. What might some of those solutions be . It seems there is certainly a lot of bringing awareness to the issue but there isnt a lot of talk about solutions. And the solutions are we need some money. We need money and we need to put services and and supports in place for our kids and families have tab impacted by this. Those are the solutions. Weve got to get the money because we node flint doesnt have the money to deal with this crisis and we need help. Now both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have been to flint, victor, as you know. They have tried to raise awareness about what is going on there but there is also a political point to be made by both candidate. We heard from Hillary Clintons National Political director as the flint water crisis really came into the public consciousness nationally and she said if this were a white affluent community this wouldnt have happened. Certainly there is a message and were hearing it from both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. That this is something they want to raise awareness about. That they are there for African American community o of flint and not just flint. This is a wider issue for them. And we will certainly have the congressman representing flint on shortly. And well talk more about showing this community the money and fixing the problem. Brianna, thank you so much. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders facing off on that stage tonight at 8 00 eastern on in the cnn democratic debate live from flint, michigan. Anderson cooper moderates, only here on cnn. Bernie sanders is hoping he can keep the momentum going. Maine tonight has 25 dealts s delegates as state. Lets start with Super Saturday. Some momentum built certainly. Sands taking two of the three races but he didnt win the delegate count. Hillary clintons win in louisiana overtaking his two wins. How do you gauge yesterdays contest. You know were very proud of the wins we got yesterday. Were grateful for the win in nebraska, and grateful for kans kansas. Were hoping to do very well today in maine and were hoping to do well on the debate stage. There as path to the nomination for us. We are still in this. We did amass some delegates yesterday. Were going amass some delegates today and the fight rolls on. Victor look. This is a nominating contest that we believe is going to go all the way through to the convention. Weve got michigan coming up were in michigan of course right now. Well be here tomorrow as well. And tuesday as well because we believe that the message that senator sanders has of a rigged economy kept in place by a system of corrupt Campaign Finance is one that resonates. Were going to be talking about trade. Hopefully we talk about trade tonight. These disastrous trade policy, many of which secretary clinton has supported have literally created ladders to poverty and have contributed to why flibt looks the way it looks, why detroit looks the way it looks, cities like baltimore and places like ohio. So were going to continue to have that conversation and we continue do well. These are places with High Percentage of minority democratic voters. And we see consistently that senator sanders does not do well with minority voters, or as well as secretary clinton. How does he change that moving forward . He cant have too many more contest likes louisiana or south carolina. Well we are actively reaching out to minority voters, victor and meeting them where they are and having these conversations. We were in ohio yesterday. We had a community confirmation and we had over a thousand people in there. 3 4 of the crowd was African American and we had a very good conversation. We have been in flibt. Were in detroit. Were hosting town halls and we believe our message is resonating. Folks in michigan, illinois for that matter, folks in ohio are responding to the fact that senator sanders has always stood on the side of hardworking american people. They are responding to the fact that they know these disastrous trade policies have literally destroyed these communities and they know he has fought hard against nafta, the north American Free trade agreement and hes leading the fight against the t. P. P. And i dont think voters can trust Hillary Clinton on this issue. She called it the Gold Standard and now shes against it we dont know. We are out here talking to voters about those issues. We certainly have heard ra from senator sanders on the stump. Let me ask you quickly about flint specifically. Senator sanders has called for government snyder to step down over the water crisis here. But i wonder, are we going to hear specifics about a solution tonight at the debate . Well i think you can expect senator sanders on that debate stage to, yes, offer concrete things that he believes should be addressed. Now yes he has called for the resignation of governor snyder, what has happened in flint should not be happening in 2016 anywhere in the richest country in the world for that matter. So hes going to talk about the issues. I expect him to talk about some proposed solutions. But this is an Environmental Justice issue victor and senator sanders has made Environmental Justice part of his platform. In our Racial Justice platform, Environmental Justice is part of one of the five tenants that we have been speaking about. So flint is that Environmental Justice. We have to build up those communities and we have to take care of our environment, especially for e urban and undersurveed communities, so yes. Well certainly be looking for those specifics. Simone sanders, National Press secretary for the sanders campaign, thank you so much. Thank you. Later well talk to a Hillary Clinton supporter about the water crisis in flint and specific solutions. On state of the Union Dana Bash talked with Bernie Sanders and marco rubio. That is at 9 00 a. M. Eastern only an cnn. And ahead on new day there is voting in puerto rico for the gop. Are marco rubios chances pretty good for picking up delegates there or gaining some momentum . Also spoking of momentum and rubio, ted cruz enjoys a surge this morning from Super Saturday wins. Im Victor Blackwell live in flint, michigan this morning, the site of tonights president ial debate on the democratic side for the primary. Bernie sanders won more states yesterday, Super Saturday. But this morning Hillary Clinton is in even better position to secure the democratic nomination than she was before the first vote on saturday was cast. Clinton secured 50 delegates thanks to her overwhelming win in louisiana. Bernie sanders with 46 from saturday. On the republican side, although ted cruz and donald trump each one two state, cruz ended up with a better delegate count with 64 to trumps 49 on saturday. And this morning the primary calendar is entering a critical ten day stretch. Lets talk democrats. First voting in maine. There will be caucuses there for the democrats. Michigan and mississippi on march 8th. And then the race moves to idaho, michigan, mississippi. Similar dates on the republican side. Michigan and mississippi join on the 8th and of course march 15th. The winner go home potentially states for two of the candidates, for florida, thats marco rubios state. And john kasich has promised he will win ohio. But lets talk about today in gop voters. In puerto rico. Polls open in the top of the hour and 12k350i9 havidespite h electoral votes they have 23 delegates. And in san juan, who is the favorite there, boris . Reporter victor, so far everyone weve spoken to seems to believe that marco rubio is the favorite here in puerto rico. I spoke to an official yesterday who said the party isnt officiallily endorsing any accountant but it is an understanding that rubio will likely take the island particularly because he understand the needs and concerns of puerto ricoance. Mostly the debt here in puerto rico. The island has been in a recession the past ten years and looking also to an answer to the question of the statehood. Yesterday, he drummed up support beating that drum about economic independence and a conservative look for the island. In real terms puerto rico is only 23 delegates as you mentioned. So it is not huge when it comes to the electoral map but there is a symbolic victory for rubio here in that there are more than a million Puerto Ricans who vote in florida. Hes hoping his presence leads over into the voting in florida. March 15th as you mentioned. There is also a particular symbolic victory here in that if he wins the island he can have ammunition going into donald trump whos obviously claimed that hispanics love him. We spoke to senator rubio yesterday after a less than stellar Super Saturday asking how he felt after disappointing performances in maine, kentucky, kansas and here is what he said. Many of the states that voted are states that quite frankly some of my opponents do better in. And rewekzed that going in but we wanted to make sure we got our fair share of delegates in this proportional process. Were soon going to be in the winner take all process in larger states like florida and other places like that and that is where we feel very confident as we move forward. Despite the senators trying to stay positive and saying he didnt win any delegates in maine. Despite him trying to maintain the proportional delegates and try to move closer to donald trump and ted cruz, it does not look good for the Rubio Campaign right now so hes hoping to turn things around and could start here this puerto rico. Boris, thank you so much. Back here in michigan, the flint water crisis of course will be front and Center Tonight in this cnn democratic debate. The stage is set for tonights big debate here in flint, michigan. You see the two podiums there. Senator sanders, secretary clinton will faceoff about issues of the economy. Domestic issues of course and National Security but there are also talk about the flint water crisis. This community has been suffering with polluted water for some time. Now federally, you know, the federal government typically does not get involved in municipal water issue. But the water problem here in flint is anything but typical. For nearly two years, the men, women and the children of flint have been subjected to as i said the foul smelly Drinking Water contaminated with high levels of toxic lead, other pollutants and although the problem has been said for some time very little has been done. And one issue tonight they will try to address is the role the federal government should take in helping flint clean up the water supply. I have with me this morning, democratic congressman dan killdee. Good to have you. Lets start with the money. Thats what weaver wants. We know the problem is. Where tis the help . Senator mike lee has put a hold on this money to help fix the problem. Your view on that and whats preventing money getting to this community . I understand at least one of senator lees points and that is the state of michigan bears the primary responsibility and actually has unbudgeted money waiting to be deployed. Much more help should come from the state. I get that. Except that people who live in flint were citizens of the United States. Weve always pitched in in crisis. We have a disaster in flint. And and we should have a federal contribution to the recovery. Keeping in mind that i think the state does bear the principal responsibility. His point is those are natural disasters. This is a man made disaster. And whistle blowers and emails have shown and this should be something that the state carries the burden for. We keep pushing. Weve been pushing governor for some time. Back in september we asked and it wasnt until january. And i understand this point about whether the federal government or the State Government bears primary responsibility and the point about whether it is man made or a natural disaster. If you go out and talk to the people of flint, they are not too concerned how this happened. They are in need of help. We are a nation that bands together when people are in trouble and i think we have a right to expect the state to step up in a much bigger way than they have. But when the federal government can help, it should help. And that is why were pushing this legislation. It is not intended to be the entire solution. Most of that responsibility still rests with the state and they havent stepped up. Speaking of going out and speaking to people. I have been here the last couple of days. You have brought members of congress, leaders from washington here. Held tell me about that experience. Well it was a really Good Opportunity for members not to speak to communities, to our community but to actually listen to them. We had a speak out at a local church. And the members left really moved. It is one thing to understand a crisis and now how it happened and read about it and see the data. But to actually listen to citizens who are really in pain who are anxious, who are afraid, every would have been those 25 members of congress, they came in committed to help flint. They left with absolute certainty that they are going to do everything they can to make sure that the federal government steps in and that the State Government especially is held accountab accountable. I think they left with a much better understanding and more of an emotional commitment to make sure something is done to help the people of flint. I certainly came here thinking theoretically understand people cant drink the water. You cant cook with it. But having conversations with people about not being able to just rinse your hands or the small things, laundry. We know when those two candidates hit the states tonight people are going to be waiting for solutions. The problem has been identified. We know that you support Hillary Clinton in this nomination fight. What solutions will she bring . And are you expecting that more than empathy for the people . That she will come with an answer . Ive talked to secretary clinton on this issue. She kim to flint. We do have specific issues and i know she supports them. How do we make sure we get the help to young kids who have been exposed to high levels of lead. Early childhood education. Better support. Behavioral support in the school. Nutritional support. After school programming. All of the things that we would do for our own children if they were facing a developmental hurdle. Is what our plan for the recovery of flint consists of. Beyond that we also need to provide some help to maintain and grow the economy here. Weve taken a lot of hits over the years in flint. This is a big one. And were going to need help so when we get these kids through this struggle, which we will, there is an opportunity waiting for them at the other end. The one thing i really fell exc compelled to say. Flint people are really strong. All we really need are the resources. We know what the plan looks like. We know what we need to do to fix and heal this community. We just need to resources to get it done. And it has to come from the people who did this to our community. Largely people at the State Government. Strong people here. And very hospitable. Weve been welcomed with open arms here, i think in large part because not only bringing awareness but bringing the conversation here and people who can decide to do something about it. Congressman killdee, thank you. Again, the debate is tonight here in flint, michigan. 8 00 p. M. Now the water, as dangerous, toxic waste here. Built for business. Flint, michigan, the site of tonights democratic president ial primary debate. They have a terrible crisis in flint they are fighting but the people, strong, resilient. And quite hospitable as weve been here for some time. They say the city knew but did nothing about it for nine months. Families continued to bathe and drink and cook with the water. And cnn has been investigating the crisis and really been speaking with the people who live here. Not just the local officials but the families dealing with it. And we can only imagine. Im sure a lot were not even aware o. It is really interesting victor. It is not just what they are dealing with now but for two years before anyone was listening. They were shouting. Bringing their brown water to City Council Meetings and asking for help and they werent getting it and now their pain is also related to the fact they are found out official s knew what was wrong for so many months. The rash, the hair loss, the brown water. We had to figure what was going on. The Leann Walters had enough after months of no answers. Went to the epa and got the science. The test showed the water was so polluted with lead it was twice the level of hazardous waste. Most think of the epa as this organization that will come in in a time of crisis and fix things. Do you think that happened here is this. Absolutely not. Not when it should have. An epa scientist drafted a memo about the high levels of lead in the home, highlighting serious concern for residents and violations of the federal regulations. The memo was leaked to the public but instead of taking tough action t head of the regional epa office susan hedman tried to keep it under wraps. She tried to underplay the report saying the scientists acted inappropriately by sharing his findings, because it was only a draft report and that only when the report is revised and fully vetted will it be shared with the city. Marc edwards is the leading Drinking Water researcher called in to test the water. Who on earth would read that memo with the data showing a child had been lead poisoned and the worst lead in water that weve seen in 25 years. Who would get that memo and not take it seriously . Here she is, knowing this abuse is occurring. And remaining completely silent and letting these kids future be destroyed. I mean, i cant i cant even begin to think how she might justify that to herself. It wasnt until nine months later that the final report was released. And the epa issued an emergency order. All that time the people of flint continued using toxic water. The regional director susan hedman resigned. Now emails victor show that the epa did offer to send the city of flint some additional experts but people here want to know why they didnt do more. Why not tell the people who were living here what they knew about their water. Epa did decline an on camera interview but they did tell us in a statement the ability of the epa to oversee was impacted by failures and resistance at the state and local levels. It is finger pointing back and forth. Everywhere. Because the state has also said that the feds didnt do their job. And the federal government the epa the cdc staying the state hindered them and the city there in the middle wonder when they are going to get help. How much access do the people in flint have to the people to ask those questions directly . At points they do but not what they want. They dont have the answers they want. They have the bottled water. They can go pick it up. At times it is hard. It is not really being delivered to their houses. Thif to go get it. So the resources are starting to come in some ways. People are paying attention but when you talk to people they are angry ry because they dont have the answers and they want them. And there are people who live outside the community who are also angry this could happen. Not just to any city in the world but a city here in the United States. That this could happen to people in this country. Thank you so much. The cnn debate, we know that will be one of the major topics tonight. The media is saying they havent seen anything like this not since germany in the 1930s. I mean everyone loves me. Race, ugly racists. People who didnt even know they were racist. People with eyes like this. And this guy loves me, dont you . Wait . Whats that is that get him out. Oh that christie expression behind him there. And here is a take on the arise of donald trump is affecting Hillary Clintons general election chances. Arent these people great . They are strong, they are beautiful and they are all been punched in the nose at the trump rally. And speaking of trump hes on track to become the republican nominee so to all of you voters out there who have thought for years, i hate hillary, i could never vote for her. To you i say welcome. Because ive got clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and here you can stuck in the middle with me. Former cast member jason se dackis also returned to snl last night. Thanks for starting your morning with us. Much more on the next hour of your new day live from flint, michigan and it starts right now. Captions by vitac www. Vitac. Com paul in atlanta. And good morning. Im Victor Blackwell live inmy. A bit of a delay there. The site of cnns democratic debate tonight, two days before the primary. And the ever changing face of this years election is our lead story today. The republican candidates waking up to a potential shake up in the race for the white house. Ted cruz may be stealing Donald Trumps thunder, winning two out of saturdays four contests and inching his delegate count closer to the front runner. Cruz won in kansas and maine. But trump still leads in the delegate count. 385 by cnns estimate. Cruz now narrowing that gap. Hes at 298. Hets turn to the democrats now. Hillary clinton brought in a solid win over Bernie Sanders in louisiana. But came in behind her rival in nebraska and kansas. Clinton still has a strong lead in the delegate count. Weve got our team of correspondents covering the story but were going to begin with mark preston. I want to start about ted cruz. His surge seems to be the story this morning and it is not just that he won two of the contests but his wins were thumpings. The trump wins were much narrower than expected. It was. Trumps performance at the debate last week, did that hurt him . And i dont think we can really make the conclusion yet at this point. These with contests ted cruz won that donald trump wasnt necessarily expected to do super well in. But donald trump is still very far ahead in the delegates. Were heading into that curable three weeks right now now. Marco rubio has been hitting trump hard and consistently but it doesnt seem to manifest in wins. In fact he didnt take delegates home in two of the four states. So if you go back, Chris Christie went hard after donald trump and marco rubio in particular. And he ended up falling on the sword and losing. And i think marco rubio took a gamble by going out and really becoming the attack dog on donald trump and ted cruz sat back in many ways and allowed that to happen. So did rubio go out and help cruz because hes is won who looked like he could have been slightly unhinged by going down into the gut we are trump. And perhaps that is whats happened. For rubio, everybody is waiting for the 15th. He has to win florida. But racking up the losses, how much does that undercut his entire narrative or the reason for his campaign . I look at all of this as moments in time. And over the past weeks, marco rubio is going to be the establishment pick. Hes the one everybody should be behind however that doesnt seem to be happening. The establishment is now looking at ted cruz, somebody they dont even like. But they are now talking about maybe we get behind ted cruz. We saw Eric Erickson just this morning, a influential social conservative voice saying marco rubio needs to get out of the race and run at ted cruzs Vice President and if that happens he thinks they can take out donald trump. Which is interesting. But when we talk about losers on the night you have to say that marco rubio was a big loser but perhaps even the biggest loser right now is the establishment because they have yet to have a candidate win a mainly contest or a contest al all. So speaking of winning a contest, lets go to Boris Sanchez in san one, puerto rico, where marco rubio is hoping to pick up their 23 delegates. What are you hearing from rubios campaign . It couldnt have been a great night for them we know in the delegate count. With he didnt pick up delegates in half the states that voted and caucused. Reporter yeah obviously a less than Super Saturday for marco rubio. The Campaign Making light of the fact that those were not exactly states he was expected to well in. He said the kind of voter in those states he doesnt necessarily have the best appeal for those voters. But hes hoping to win today in puerto rico particularly because there are about a million puerto rican voters in florida. Hes hoping the success here can help tip the scales in his favor on march 15th. Despite that this was a rough saturday for rubio. Here he is responding, when i asked him about how he felt about hiss lackluster performance yesterday. All of these states are awarding delegates by proportion. So tonight well have more delegates than last night. We continue to pick up delegates and we will continue to do so and this map only gets better for us. Many of the states that voted tonight are states that quite frankly some of my opponents just do better in. We wanted to make sure we got our fair share oaf delegates. Were soon going to be in larger state likes florida and other places and that is where we feel very confident moving forward. Reporter you heard the senator trying to take delegates proportionately away. He didnt do that in state likes maine so it is going to be very difficult moving forward. Hes looking to turn the tide here in puerto rico. This would also be a major symbolic victory and a challenge to Donald Trumps claim that his pacs love him. Rubio hoping this translates to success in florida. And a campaign quickly losing momentum. Thank you so much. Lets turn to the democrats. Brianna keilar at the site of tonights democratic debate in flint, michigan. Bernie sanders last night had a momentum win but it seems secretary clinton had a mathematical win with getting more delegates. What are we looking forward to tonight . He won two states. She won one. But she won more delegates and she already has a big lead over him. So it was a mathematical victory for Bernie Sanders. Tonight well be seeing both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton here in this debate hall behind me in flint, michigan. Some of the questions they will be kefielding will come from flt residents. And who of course are concerned about the water crisis here. These candidates are we expect coming to talk about specifics because that is what the residents want. This is what the mayor of flint, karen weaver said. I really want to hear them talk about what, you know, some solutions to this. That is one of the things were lacking for because weve been dealing with this situation for such a long time that it is time to move past. We know we continue to need water and filters but weve really got to look at longterm solutions and what it is the people of flint deserve to have as a result of whats happened to them. Hillary clintons National Political director said as this crisis became part of the public consciousness that this wouldnt have happened in a white affluent city. So this is a chance for Bernie Sanders and for Hillary Clinton to say not only are they paying attention and care about flint but they are paying attention to the concerns of African Americans. Yeah the people here dont want just sympathy. They want solutions. Mark, quickly on the sands clinton race. Did yesterdays vote dramatically narrow the path for sands is this. No. It has not. What the sanders people will tell you march was Hillary Clintons month or certainly i dont know the south was Hillary Clintons month and were going to look for Bernie Sanders to win out west and here right now in the industrial midwest. Mark preston, thank you so much. And today at 9 00 a. M. Eastern. Do not miss state of the union. Chief Political Correspondent dana bash will be hosting and talk with republican president ial candidate marco rubio and democratic president ial candidate Bernie Sanders ahead of tonights debate. That is at 9 00 a. M. Eastern right here an cell body. And still had an update on trumps tone on torture. Hes now saying that he will broaden laws to fight isis. Well ask a supporter what that means and how hell pull it off. Plus a supporter of ted cruz joins us and his call for marco rubio and john kasich to get out of race so he can go bone on on with trump. 6570 of republicans recognize that donald trump is not the best candidate to go head to head with Hillary Clint clinton. M. , Bernie Sanders Hillary Clinton will face off in the next democratic debate. And the calendar for the republicans is entering a critical ten day stretch. For the democrats of course voters in me are casting ballots today, michigan and mississippi on march 8th. Then the race moves to arizona, idaho, utah. Before the big prizes in florida, missouri, North Carolina, ohio. Of course the big day is march 15th. Thats what everyones looking ahead to. Florida will be crucial, as well as ohio on that day for john kasich. Lets talk now. I want to start with some video out of kansas. Good morning both of you. The turnout for kansas, 7,000 for the gop. More than double in 2012 when it was about 30,000. But trump lost wig there and this seems to undercut his narrative that he is growing the party. This is a closed contest. What do you think about what were seeing here . A big numbers here but a big loss for trump. In a fifty state contest you are not going to win every state. There is no doubt mr. Trump has brought millions of voters into the Republican Party and growing it in a way weve never seen before and the turnout demonstrates that and mr. Trumps huge margins in states geographically diverse demonstrate that. A good example how were growing the party. We have a huge election coming up in michigan where mr. Trump is doing very well. Mr. Trump has talked about how our trade policies are crushing the middle class. Now you have ted cruz, marco rubio, john kasich all in favor of the Trans Pacific partnership which will export our jobs to japan and vietnam. Especially car jobs. Mr. Trump is reaching diseffected democrats and independents with his message of creating more moring jobs in the United States instead of forcing our workers to compete with the lowest wage workers around the globe. Let me come to you, ron. How do you expand it . And your candidate had a very good saturday. How do you expand geographically what we see as the win for cruz in the south. Lets look tatd fact that Donald Trumps people have said that ted cruz is a regional candidate, for example. In maine and alaska are not exactly in the south. So senator cruz has drawn support from a variety of demographic segments of the Republican Party regionally and the like. His appeal has been brood and continues to broaden. We have an opportunity to win florida. This campaign is on offense. Weve seen a tremendous change in the numbers in recent days. I think this debate performance on the part of senator cruz which was stellar had a powerful effect on the voters. In louisiana, the ballots that came in that were cast absentee. They cast early, they favored donald trump. But the ballots that came in on election day. People who voted on election day. People who voted later were supporting senator cruz and that is why Donald Trumps margins were so small in kentucky and in louisiana. Ron, let me ask you about florida. You are there in jacksonville. I lived and worked there for many years. Do you believe that ted cruz can win florida . There is no do well in florida. It is win or go home with nothing. Is this an attempt just to keep marco rubio from winning there . Or do you think ted cruz can take home the 99 delegates . Yeah, just to be clear, i think this is a really important point. And thanks for the question. We dont compete anywhere in order to deny someone else winning. Were dpeeting in order to win. We have to get to 1232 delegates. Were not far behind trump at all. We won more dealts than donald trump yesterday. But were weeting to win. Shows the political dynamic have very very different. So marco rubio is in big trouble in his own state and were going to compete to win. Donald trumps call to narrow this field last night. Lets play that. I think marco rubio had a very very bad night. And personally id call for him to drop out of race. I think it is time now that he crop out of the race. I really think so. I think it is probably time. I dont think tonight he can get up and rant and rave and oh he did great. He comes in third, he comes in fourth. Every time he says you gotble to able to win. And he has not been able to win and i think it is time that he drops out. So steven, i understand why trooulz and john kasich would call for marco rubio to drop out of race. But it seems counterintuitive that donald trump would call for rubio to drop out. Because then that would consolidate the non trump or antitrump vote if you go one on one. What do you say . One of the reasons weve called for mr. Rubio to drop out of the race is because rubio betrayed the voters of florida and that is a big deal. Mr. Rubio and im in florida right now and im in florida right now and there is a lot of anger towards mr. Rubio in the state. And he campaigned in 2010 and cnn covered it extensively on a pledge to defeat amnesty. But that wasnt Donald Trumps point last night im gonna finish my point though. But my point is that it is a huge issue in the state of florida. He promised hed defeat amnesty and mr. Rubio became the biggest kpmp of amnesty in all of america. And he is what we heard from donald trump last night was not a call because of immigration policy. It was a call to get out pause he wasnt winning. Right. I understand that in political circles everyone is always debating a this person wins and that we are trying to get everybodys vote and we are going to win the voters that mr. Rubio once had who supported him on the amnesty issue and then were completely and totally betrayed. And were also going to get votes for mr. Cruz because cruzs support and his vote for fasttracking obamas trade deal is going to send away working class voters i get it. By the millions. Thats what we certainly heard from mr. Trump on the stump but you make the point that in political circles people are worried about whos getting what vote. You sir are an avierz to Donald Trumps campaign. You are in a political circle and this is a primary for the nomination. I thank you for making the point. Thank you both for being us. Back to pamela in atlanta. Ands cooper will moderaterson c. Ted cruz building his case to be the best alternative to donald trump. Joining me is cnn senior media correspondent brian stelter. Brian i want to start with the trump News Conference were seeing. While others are having rallies hes having these News Conference. First in maralago and west palm, what are you taking away from those . Every step he tries something new. He changes what is supposed to be and how things are supposed to be in election cycle. So in this case News Conferences after primary nights. I this i hes doing it partly because it is unpredictable. It is unscripted and it guarantees him Free Television coverage and headlines the next morning. He also last night brought in a lot of supporters. His club members in the first seven or so rows. The reporters were so several rows back. So that was the cheering you heard. And it has the vooif of a rally perhaps. But it is unpredictable and it gives trump an opportunity to really criticize his opponent or set the tone for todays news coverage. Encouraging rubio to get out of the race. And it gives trump the opportunity to set the agenda for today. The cruz camp says that the media does not give cruz or the campaign enough i think there is some truth this. If you think about conservative media. It is trump or rubio. And cruz has been underestimated during the campaign. Often times when rubio would have a second or third place win or a loss. Ranking in the primaries. It would be portrayed more as the win. The idea of momentum from marco rubio. Well it is really hard right now to suggest there is momentum from rubio. And i think if cruz had been underestimated until now there is no way anymore. Hes going earn more and more attention as a result of these wins. I understand than you went to a sanders rally yesterday. What was there . What was your take away . Eye opening for me just to take it in. To hear the roar of the crowds. Sometimes you dont fully get the sense through television how intense the fans are, whether it is for trump or rubio or cruz or Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton. Whats striking to me is you have a lot of people shouting. Hooting and hollering but in a respectful manner. None of the disruption that weve seen at trump rallies. That is because protesters are not going to sanders or clinton rallies the way they are to trump rallies. Weve heard from roertds it can seem a little scary at trump rallies. When there are the protesters and this reaction from the crowd. You dont see that as the sanders or clinton rally. Passing just behind me. Im sitting on the campus of the university of michigan here in flint. And as beautiful as this is, cause some major problems for this community. And one critical issue tonight residents will be listening for is the role of the federal government in the citys ongoing water crisis. In particular why the epa did not sound the alarm right away. Were told it waited months eventually costing the regional demean administrator her job. Is it the epa that dropped the ball . The state . I know there is finger pointing back and forth. There is finger pointing back and forth. The state definitely caused the problem. They have dpited to that. The federal government simply did not act soon enough. There are employees at the epa who say this was a pattern of behavior. I want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Cnn has learned that the House Committee on oversight is now investigating how to epas office handled the water crisis in flint. A report concluded epa knew early on that michigan was in violation of federal water laws for lead and had the authority to step in but didnt. The epas Inspector General is also looking into the allegations of the mismanagement in the epa Region Five Office under the leadership of the susan headman. A culture Carolyn Bolen knows well. She says she was reassigned after raising alarms over how the office handled Sexual Harassment cases. She says shes not surprised at how the epas scientist preliminary report was suppressed. I thought well here we two again. A dedicated employee, very serious about his work. Very effective employee, who presented the information very well and it was disregarded. On its website epa now has a warning to the residents of flint. Do not drink unfiltered water. It is not safe. Looking a back. What goes through your mind when you think about how all of this unfolded . I wish i would have protected my family better . It is not your fault. No it is not. But they are my kids. And it is not just about my family. There are adults that have Serious Health issues now. There are teenagers that have Serious Health issues now. So no, it is not okay. Because they didnt listen. No matter how much we screamed. No matter how much we cried. No matter whatever we showed them we were not heard. Now emails show that the epa did offer to bring in additional experts to the city of flint but people here want to know why they didnt act sooner. Why not tell the people who were living here what they knew about their water. The epa declined to answer those questions on camera but did give us a statement. They said the ability to the epa to oversee was impacted by failures and resistance at the state and local levels. Finger pointing. No tolerance of course for finger pointing tonight. The people hear want to hear from the candidates solutions not just sympathy. Of course. Back you do in atlanta. And still ahead the Supreme Court vacancy. Well introduce you do four judges the white house might nominate and after that well talk about debate strategy as were hours from showtime in flint, michigan. Well be right back. Mind when i got out of the hospital what about my family . My lil buddy . And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. Then my doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. Supreme court i take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn because you cant beat zero heartburn ahhh the sweet taste of victory prilosec otc. One pill each morning. 24 hours. Zero heartburn. The count is now at four. That is the number of judges who we can confirm are being vetted. The latest names. Sri srinivasan, and Merrick Garland are joining jay kelly and jackson. Here to talk about all of these nominees. At this point it is a guessing game. We know who the fbi is vetting. But who would you consider the front runner . I think judge srinivasan has to be the front runner. Hes been unanimously confirmed recently by the senate. A lot of judicial experience having been now in the d. C. Court of appeals for several years. I think he is universally respected as far as a judge and a legal scholar. He worked in the Obama Administration as deputy solicitor general. So he has a lot of experience. And the bush administration. Exactly. I think actually clerked for republican appointed judges. Hes the type of moderate consensus nominee you would expect when you have a divided senate. And what about air merritt garland. Hes been in the running in the past but a front runner weve learned . And obviously is a very impressive resume. Hes considered to be a consistent consensus candidate here but Court Watchers say his age and the bottom line the fact that hes a white male might work against him. I think the president is searching for diversity here on the court. Weve seen that in his earlier selection. So i would about pate he try to do that again. And while 63 certainly doesnt seem old to me, when you think about the Supreme Court justice trying to serve 20, 30 years on the court the president will probably pick someone a little younger. And may be more palatable to republicans in the senate to have someone a little old er. But then you get to the hearing part and republicans are saying they are not even going to hold a hearing. And jane kelly on the 5th circuit is judge kelly has been someone senator grassley has supported enthusiastically for a long time. So it is going to be very difficult to say this is a qualified judge but im not still not going to consider her just for political reasons. And then of course cotan ji brown jackson. Also has an impressive resume as we see right here but but some Court Watchers say she may lack the experience. What is your take on that . Because i think the recent judges from the court of appeals not the district court. Its been traditional at least recently to pick someone from the court of appeals, that is the next level below the United States Supreme Court and if you go another level below you get to the district court. I like this pick and i like it for a couple of different reasons. If the president says i want judge jackson, he would be going outside of the mainstream, picking someone who does have judicial experience from the trial level. The president has said that that persons experience, Life Experience is important and this is a judge that deals with people. Which is a little bit different than a Circuit Court of appeals. She has clerked for justice briar. Shes been on the Sentencing Commission and she has a lot of experience in criminal law. And if the president is convince nod nominee is going to get an up or down vote this may be a good pick politically because then he has a diverse candidate which may motivate candidates to come out and vote in november. A lot of talk about energizing the base. Thank you so much paige pate. Were going to see what happens, word is in the next week or two. So keeping our yous on it. And still ahead how will Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders use tonights debate to their advantage . Well take a closer look at the strategies of two campaign pains. Im Victor Blackwell at the university of michigan here in flint. And were just about 12 hours away from the cnn democratic debate here in flint, michigan. The candidates are set to take the stage as the lead water crisis looms large over the city. Theyre going to take that stage. We know that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have talked about that issue in their stump speeches at campaign rallies. A city of 100,000 people, mostly poor, mostly africanamerican, who were drinking leadcontaminated water for nearly two years because the governor of michigan wanted to save some money. When you have that kind of dereliction, dereliction in duty, i think the governor should do the right thing and resign. But the people who live here, they, of course, are expecting some compassion, but theyre also looking for content. How do they strike that balance . Lets discuss with Emory University debate director ed lee. Ed, good to have you this morning. Explain for us how you would advise one of these candidates to not only bring, as weve said this morning, sympathy, but some solutions as well . Its an interesting balance they have to strike. Absolutely. Its an interesting balance. And also a very difficult one. But the first thing you need to think about in any communicative act is who is your audience . Who are you trying to communicate with . And i think there are two different audiences that we have. For Bernie Sanders, i think this is a Perfect Place and a perfect opportunity for him to Start Connecting some of the dots with the Africanamerican Community that hes had some difficulties with by using flint to talk about the relationship between race, poverty and powerlessness in america. And i think that for Hillary Clinton, that theres a different audience that i think that she is communicating with where shell start to try to pivot to the general elections a little bit more and contrast the tone of the republican debate, which at times feels more like vaudevillian political theater than an attempt to have a competitive discussion about policy. You know, its easy to do that when secretary clinton is the only person there at a rally or at a dinner and shes the on person speaking to a group, but id imagine there are some complications when the person youre running against in the primary is on stage with you. Can it seem a bit dismissive if you take, you know, something thats lobbed out by Bernie Sanders and then turn and talk about the republicans . Well, i think that she could make some arguments along that speaks to the issues of concern that Bernie Sanders is speaking to. But also indicate that someone like donald trump is unable to address the issues and concerns that are going on in flint. That i wholeheartedly expect her to speak about whats going on in flint because the moment of being there, the issues that are at hand, what the audience demands will require her to do so, but she will also probably and probably should speak to it in terms of the Republican Party being unable and or unwilling to address the issues that are of primary importance to the people in that theater. Bernie sanders prides himself in his campaign on having never run a negative ad. Now, some clinton supporters would question that. But possibly tonight well see him be a little more aggressive, a little more assertive. How does he balance that with his positive campaign mantel . Well, its a question of whether or not in my mind is that something that the audience wants . I think there is some value to anger and some value to attending to the anger of the audience that youre trying to speak to. And that you can see that on the republican side that theyve actually tapped into the discontent, the morass, the anger on the side of many people in the republican primary and that it will probably serve Bernie Sanders to identify that there are some issues and concerns that are worthy of us being frustrated and angry about while simultaneously trying to identify that there are policy solutions and choices that we have to deal with them. Hey, ed, you mentioned the republican debates. Just as a refresher, lets take a look, and well talk about their debates on the other side. We are not going to turn over the conservative movement or the party of lincoln or reagan, for example, to someone whose positions are not conservative. Someone who thinks the Nuclear Triad is a rock band from the 1980s. This little guy has lied so much about my record. The real con artist is senator marco rubio. The people of florida cant stand him. He couldnt get elected d dogcatcher. You know, donald has a tenuous relationship with the truth. Youre the liar. Youre the lying guy up here. Youre the one. Youre the one. Release the tapes. Youre the one. Ed, how do you explain what were seeing on the republican side . We hear the boos in the crowd and of course, those are from supporters of certain candidates, but donaldtrump has been the frontrunner in this race from nearly the moment he entered it. Yes. Part of the issue is that it gets back once again to what are the advisers expecting the audience wants to hear . It is very clear to me that what the candidates are being coached to do is to be attentive to the politics and not the policies that are at hand and strive to be extremely sensitive to the emotional needs of the audience and not necessarily the logic of the arguments that they need. And so we have politics and emotive, the affect of the presentation being elevated to being extremely important over the logic of it. And i think that Donald Trumps campaign has done a fantastic job of analyzing that thats what the audience desires, at least at this particular point in time in their run for the presidency. Yeah, certainly on the republican side, weve seen the audience take a larger and larger role as we get to, i guess, now the 11th debate on thursday night. Ed lee weve learned a lot. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. Certainly. And the past couple of days, our cnn crew in flint, michigan, worked to set the debate stage. Look at this. Time lapse here for you. Two big wins yesterday for ted cruz in kansas and in maine. Mr. Cruz saying voters now sending a very big message. What it represents is republicans coalescing, saying it would be a disaster for donald trump to be our nominee. And were going to stand behind the strongest conservative in the race. Two wins for donald trump, two in kentucky and louisiana. Those Southern States keep trump ahead in the d
