Typhoonforce wind. If you hear about significant damage, thats very unusual for okinawa and a sign of the intensity of this storm which is battering an area where more this a Million People live, including as you mentioned the u. S. Military personnel. The manager of the air bass put out an alert saying this is the worst storm to hit okinawa in 15 years telling everybody to take it very seriously, hunker down and to make sure to tie down loose object so they dont become deadly projectiles. Take a look at storm by the numbers, mentioned 125mileperhour winds. 600,000 people now under voluntary evacuation advisories. 100,000 people now without power. More than 100 flights have been cancelled leaving more than 14,000 passengers grounded. And, john, the worst for japan may be yet to come because right now this storm is forecast to make landfall on the mainland later this week in the Southern Island of kyushu where 14,000 people live. Its rainy season and they have been getting drenched about heavy rain since last week. Talk about a major typhoon to hit this area that cant take any more rain, the results could be catastrophic. As will mentioned the storm will go on on several days on several fronts. Lets go to indra for the latest on the storms track. Wanted to show you a threeday radar so can you see how well defined the eye is. You can see category 2 strength, as you know, it wind impacting okinawa today, a very massive storm. Want to explain why we are calling this a super typhoon. At one point near a category 5 strength. Look at all the wins coming out of the south where all the tropical moisture is noticed. No winds coming from the north where the water is coolest. That system allowed it to strengthen so high, right now the equivalent what have we call a category 3 storm, 125mileperhour steady winds are out there. The outer bands hitting okinawa right now at category 2 strength, and all the system is expected to weaken as it makes its way north to the main island of japan. Still talking about huge impacts in the region, because one of the things were talking about are the strong winds, the amount of rain they have seen, seen 11 to 15 inches of rain and another 5 to 11 expected. All right. Well keep an eye on that over the next several days. Outrage and anger fueled by more violence on the streets of chicago. Now the citys top Police Officer is lashing out blaming weak gun laws for the bloodbath over the Holiday Weekend, the worst of the year by far. At least nine people are dead and more than 60 were wounded. Cnns George Howell is live for us in chicago where pretty grim numbers and a pretty grim weekend, george. Reporter john, absolutely. Some in chicago who celebrated the fourth of july with fireworks. In other neighborhoods though some people took cover amid the crack of gun cover. Mainly on the citys south side. Even though police admitted they had a plan in place, problem is, especially on sunday, it just didnt work. The shock remains. One day after a bloody weekend the mayor, the Police Superintendent and Community Members stand together. The gun violence that was part of this weekend is totally unacceptable to anybody from the city of chicago. Reporter more than 60 people were shot, 14 killed over the long Holiday Weekend, including Marlon Williams niece. She was like my own daughter. I feel hurt. Ill never be able to see my niece again. Reporter sadly its something many in chicago neighborhoods have come to fear and expect when the weather warms up. Ladies and gentlemen, its groundhog day here in chicago. Reporter Police SuperintendentGarry Mccarthy says part of the problem is that its too easy to get guns, like these that were seized by police, but its the guns police couldnt get that led to so many deaths. We obviously had a plan. The plan included putting hundreds more officers on the streets at the times that we needed them in the places where we needed them and what were the results in the results were a lot of shootings and a lot of murders, unfortunately. Reporter even though police say the murder rate is down from last year. To me its just talk. Its just i dont believe they are really doing their jobs. Reporter theres a feeling of frustration lingering on this street, a feeling that tragedies like this shouldnt be accepted as normal. What do i do next . Its hard to say what im going to do next. Im just going to prepare for her burial. That was our George Howell reporting in chicago. George, thanks so much. Lets continue this and bring in the homicide watch chicago editor for the chicago sun times. So michael, the short way of saying this you know this better than most. You watch this closer than most. With that in mind, george really laid out a little bit of what happened this weekend, but in a broader sense what happened this weekend . For a little perspective, we had 77 people shot in a matter of 70 hours at one point. 13 of those people have now died. For some comparison thats about the same as last fourth of july weekend which was a fourday weekend, and its double what we see on an average weekend here. I mean, its not uncommon for three, four, five people to be killed and 30 or 40 other people to be wounded in a weekend, but this was just exceptionally high. And the Police Superintendent, he said a lot of things. We heard him say its groundhog day in George Howells piece right there, but he also said this. He said we had a plan. The plan included putting hundreds more officers on the streets at times they needed it, in the places they thought they needed them. He goes on to say, what were the results in the results were a lot of shootings and a lot of murders, unfortunately. Did the plan just not work, or is there Something Else thats a problem . Well, Chicago Police have in the past, they have put extra officers in areas that they think are going to be high crime areas. There were so many people out on the fourth of july weekend, and Police Sources told the sun times that a lot of these were not gangrelated, a lot of this is just people drinking and going out and shooting. Fights were breaking out. Alcohol, drug use, led to a lot more shootings than normal. I mean, then that real makes you wonder. I was going to ask you lots of cities have problems with gangs and violence in the cities, but why is chicago becoming so notorious for this . You say its not even necessarily gangrelated. Some of it is not gangrelated, some of it is. Part of the problem is the south side and the west side especially have been notoriously violent, and thats not changing. Chicago police came out last week and said murders are down throughout the city compared to last year, and they are down significantly from 2012, but when i look at the murders in certain communities while they are down, they are still especially high. In the austin neighborhood wont side, going into this weekend that neighborhood alone already had 20 murders. Why . Its the toughest question. Its such a simple question but so difficult. Why is it still happening . I know that mayor rahm emanuel, he has made it his top priority, he has said, in reducing gun violence. Is his strategy flawed . Has he failed . Well, the murders are trending downwards. Shottings have generally been trending downward though they are up slightly this year compared to last year. In a lot of these areas there are theres a lot of poverty. Theres not a lot of jobs. Theres not a lot of Community Programs going on, you know, options for some of these kids, and it does lead to a lot more gangs. Unfortunately it was supposed to be a very fun weekend for so many and so many families were destroyed in tragedy on a weekend that should have been fun. Michael lansu, thank you so much. Thanks for your help. John. The growing fight in the debate over immigration. Today president obama plans to ask for more than 2 billion to help stem the flow of undocumented immigrants arriving from Central America, but he is facing repeated criticism for not planning to visit the border when he arrives in texas tomorrow. While this is happening a small california town is becoming a flashpoint for this debate. Dozens of protesters faced off in murrietta again monday on over the transfer of migrants to a Detention Center in that town. Our kyung law has more. Theres some things we know. The bus is not coming today. This is what victory looks like, say protesters in murrieta, california. Not in murrieta, not in murrieta. They are jubilant because this chartered plane from texas filled with undocumented immigrants from Central America, most of them women and children, went to chula vista, california, instead of murrieta. The federal government is moving the migrants to Southern California to cope with the crisis in texas. An influx of undocumented immigrants has crammed facilities along the texas border. A total of 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents are expected to cross illegally this year. The governments solution, fly and bus them elsewhere for processing. Usa reporter that didnt work last week in murrieta. Protesters forced them to turn away from the murrieta Border Patrol center. Its turned this normally quiet town into a battleground for the nations immigration policy. Usa usa reporter buses may not have arrived this time, but immigration and Customs Enforcement says the migrants will keep on coming to Southern California. Protesters promise the same. As long as it takes is what it comes down to. We dont want to see any confrontations between us and Government Agencies or anything like that, but a lot of us here are willing to make a stand. Reporter kyung law, cnn, murrieta, california. This just into cnn, a letter from the white house saying the president would welcome a meeting with governor rick perry while hes in texas. Why is the white house writing this letter . Well, governor rick perry overnight released a statement saying he would not be meeting the president when he lands on air force one in texas tomorrow. Governor rick perry said a handshake wont do justice to the issue at hand. Governor rick perry would prefer a longer meeting with the president , so in a letter just released by Valerie Jarrett, of course, a key aide to president obama, the white house says they would welcome such a meeting, and also invited rick perry to discuss the issue at greater length, still not clear to me whether a meeting will actually happen. Right now theres a political dance there but we eel keep you abreast of the situation as it develops. Absolutely. Lets turn to the middle east where violence is spiraling out of control, duelling operations exchanging rocket fire with no end in sight. The armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic jihad says it has fired 60 rockets at israel in response to what it calls unjust aggression, while overnight israel hammered the militant group hamas with air strikes. Israels defense minister saying the offensive may go on for days and may even expand. Aggression intensifying on both sides after the kidnapping and killings of israeli and palestinian teenagers. Its a story weve been following very closely. Diana magnate is near the gaza strip with the very latest. What is the latest . Reporter im standing overlooking the gaza strip, the northern tip of it right in the distance behind me is gaza city. Weve been here for a few hours now, and there have been numerous israeli air strikes on the cities along the gaza strip. Huge columns of smoke rising up from targets in the strip, and in return we have seen outgoing fire. One rocket landing literally the other side of this main road about 200 meters away. This is why the Israeli Defense forces have launched what they call operation protective edge to protect Israeli Citizens from the barrage of rockets coming out of the gaza strip. Israel is now at the ready even sending troops to positions alongside the gaza border. This as rocket attacks between the jewish state and hamas continue to excalculate. Overnight Israeli Defense forces say they struck 50 targets and air strikes across the gaza strip. At least ten injured. Israel now launching a clear offensive. Their operation even given an official name, protective edge, using increased targeted air strikes and calling out several hundred reservists to willed up troops for possible ground maneuvers. Israels change in tactic comes to a response in uptick in rocket attacks from gaza with some 80 on monday alone, those strikes forcing hundreds from neighboring summer camps to be sent back home. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will do whatever is necessary to stop the attacks. The hamas spokesman issuing a battle cry on facebook. The enemy has crossed the red lines and will be made to pay the price for its crimes. Hamas even showing off its weaponry in a propaganda video on their military website. These explosive scenes of violence just painting a backdrop to mounting anger in jerusalem. Tensions in the city, their worst in a decade. After the murders and beating of both jewish and palestinian teenagers. In this town where i am, here the air raid sirens they have 15 seconds to get to shelters. Israel says if they do not stop the offensive they will widen the radius they are targeting. They can already reach 50 kilometers, just this side of tel aviv and they are threatening to expand that if this barrage does not continue, and you can be sure that the sophisticated reinforced concrete shelters on this side of the border with gaza strip are very, very different to what people have on the other side in gaza itself. Kate. Seems the only thing we know right now is both sides are threatening to expand their offensive. Diana, thank you so much. In a just released opinion piece for the israeli newspapers haaretz, president barack obama is saying the only solution is a democratic jewish side living side by side in peace and security with a viable independent palestinian state. They show the warrants that investigators are looking at the medical records for both the father and the son, and they also reveal the detectives are looking at the Electronic Devices found in Justin Ross Harris car. Nick valencia is live at the cnn centre . Investigators are casting a wyatt net from information they have obtained from search and seizure warrant. Also part of their investigation is Leanna Harris. Since her husband owes arrest and the babys death her actions have been drawn into question, though shes not formally charged or named a suspect, there was a look to see if theres any search warrants for Leanna Harris on file. There are not. Her husband has pleaded not guilty. Thanks so much. Lets dig in more. Joining us is mel robbins, cnn commentator and legal analyst. Thanks so much for being with us. Really appreciate it. First john, good morning. What i want to do now is look at the where, how and why of police are doing as they investigate this case, what the responsibleas tell us. It seems to me they are trying to build a case of inconsistencies by the father, potentially catch us in a live. Lets go after the medical records, going after his medical records and cooper, the baby. Why in. First of all what, they are looking for, john, is digging for anything that might give them a clue as to motive in this case. So, for example, if youre looking at the fathers medical records, what i would be looking at if i were the prosecutor in the case and the police investigating, does he have a history of Mental Illness . Is there something going on with this guy . Did he say anything to a doctor which might give a hint as to how he could possibly do Something Like this, if in fact it was intentional, and theres also reports that hes deaf. They need to build this stuff so they can start to build a profile. In terms of the little boys coopers medical records, they are looking at whether was the child ill, did he have a catastrophic illness that might cause undue stress on their marriage so they are just looking for any clue whatsoever so help paint a picture of what was actually going on. Weve heard a lot about the car seat, too, mel, havent we . A rearfacing car seat. People who have kids know thats what you use when you have really small kids and then you grow out of it and have to change to a front facing car seat. This kid was really too big for the rear facing car seat, wasnt he . I think it depends on the seat that you buy. I remember having my son in a car seat that was rear facing until he was almost 20 months so i think it depends on the size and weight. Some of the other troubling stuff is they had him on the smallest size of the car seat so the straps were really tight against him and wrenched down and so they are going to look at that as well to see if he put him in there too tightly trying to trap him in there. Theres the thought they could have seen him popping over. He backed in, would have looked his son right in the face as he was leaving. They have charged him with a negligent type of child abuse and if they can say anybody backing up in the rear view mirror saw the kids head over the seat its less likely they can forget him. If they can say to a jury he backed in, john, and had to walk past the kid again in order to get to work, its less likely that he forgot him so they are trying to right now take a look at all the tiny little pieces to add up a picture of whats reasonable and whats not reasonable, and whats really important, john, the subject of one of those subpoenas is the cell phone, because they are going to take a look at everything that was going on on his cell phone that day. Did he get a call from day care . Did he get a text from day care . Did his wife call him about how dropoff went . He did he text friends about any plans . There were allegations, john, that he made calls at the scene, up to three phone calls. Who was he calling instead of calling 911, so these are all critical puzzle pieces, lego blocks, if you will, that allow police to build a case to basically saying he may be telling us this but all the evidence weve amassed from the phone, the dvds, the hard drive, they tell us a totally different story. Putting these pieces together as they look at the father. Are they doing the same thing for the mother right now . It doesnt seem to be quite a similar focus. You know, they need to look at her for sure, but i think weve done a really good job here at cnn of cautioning people not to rush to judgment on the mom. Sure there are things that shes done and said that cause all of us to say hey wait a minute. One of them when she said i love you, ross, im doing this for you, and we were all kind of puzzled as to what this doing thing that shes doing actually is, but shes also lost a 22monthold, has a husband her cheating on her and the world pocused on her and there are a lot of people that grieve very differently. She could be in shock and could be super angry at him, terrified so there are lots of ways to explain away her behavior, but you Better Believe they are taking a look at her, especially since there are allegations, john, that the that ross was explaining to family members how to select on two Life Insurance policies that they had taken out on baby cooper. But you make a great point there, what we have right now from the mother is perhaps strange statements, not this collection now of little threads of evidence that seem to be developing with the father. Mel robbins, great to see you this morning. Coming up next on new day, tensions growing over the Immigration Crisis as president obama is preparing to visit texas. President obama, we hear, is open to an invitation to meet with governor rick perry about immigration while hes visiting the state, but the president is at least publicly not planning to visit the border which hes taking quite a bit of heat about, and today the president is asking congress for 2 billion in emergency funds to help stem the Immigration Crisis. Is it enough, and what is it . Joining us to discuss that and much more political commentators kevin madden, republican strategist and paul begala, democratic strategist. Guys, i was going to start with the question. I think its less of an important question if he goes to the border and more is he going to hold any immigration or borderrelated event while in texas . But then this letter coming out just this morning from Valerie Jarrett, let me read just the important part of it up top. She says the president would welcome a meeting with you, governor rick perry, while he is in texas. In addition, hes asked me to invite you to join him for a meeting to discuss the situation on the border with faith leaders and local elected leaders in dallas on wednesday. John and i were talking. Paul, did rick perry just hand the president a big out politically on this . Well, i suspect what youre going to see is rick perry bounce right back and say, good, lets meet, lets meet on the border, sir. I think its you know, look, rick perry is the governor. Hes been a demagogue and frankly a dope about this issue, totally unhelpful suggesting darkly that theres a conspiracy that barack obama is behind. Children are fleeing violence in Central America. Taken a very long time to deport them because of a law that president bush signed back when he was president. That law was designed to try to protect people who are flying violence and to protect their rights, and so president obama here is simply caught trying to obey a law that was passed before he became president. But that line about faith leaders i think is most important. If hes going to pick rick perrys brain, thats the definition of slim pickings. Paul. Theres a faith leader we ought to be talking about, moork seit, been to the region, honduras and guatemala, testified before the congress. Read his testimony and actually knows whats going on and he explains that its these children are like children trapped in a burning building and, of course, they are going to leap and come to anything that looks comparatively safer, even if it risks their life to do so. I think the bishop is who he ought to meet with. Kevin, you can jump in on this. I mean, paul, that was pretty brutal, rick perry is a dope on this issue. Rick perry says hes just trying to defend the border that is his state. Kevin . Well, look, yeah. Rick perry is not known as somebody who has been particularly hawkish on immigration. I think anybody who is a border state governor has a much more informed vancouver immigration and how to deal with the border crisis. I think the big problem here for obama is his lack of disengagement on this issue up until this point. The very fact that rick perry has to invite president obama down to the border and that is even in question, a meeting such as that during a cries like this, i really do think speaks to the lack of leadership that president obama has had on this issue. I mean, we know that this is a humanitarian crisis. We know its a National Security crisis given the fact that so many folks are streaming over our bothered, and the fact that the president is going to be raising money for his political allies basically down the road but not go and visit the actual site of where this this big crisis is taking place i think is a real big approximate and i think thats why the president s standing among the American People on questions of leadership, thats why his standing has taken a hit in recent months. Paul, i mean, optics are just that, they are optics, but when the country is watching, when it kind of matters. A lot of people, as kevin is saying, how did the white house, how did the president not see this coming . Well, you know, former president george h. W. Bush, the good bush, used to say 90 of life is just showing up and i love that. Hes right, and the president should show up. He should go to the border. Its not a crisis of his making, and we understand that, and ive been in meetings like that back when i worked in the white house. Somebody said if we go, then well own the problem and be the face of the problem and we didnt cause it. I understand all that. Optics do matter and showing up matters and he actually might learn something, not from rick perry, but if he meets with the faith leaders and border folks, he hed actually learn something so i do think its a good idea for him to go. Paul is right, but when the white house yesterday said they werent concerned about the optics, you know what that said, they were concerned about the optics. Real quick, good point, kevin. Real quick on this, kevin. The 2 billion in emergency funds that the president is going to be requesting of congress, are republicans going to sign on to it . If they dont, isnt that going to be egg in their face . Look, look, not without a lot of positioning and trying to gain political leverage on this in order to get some concessions on Border Security issues down the road. I think everybody recognizes that theres a problem down there, but so many folks up on capitol hill, and i think this is this goes for republicans and democrats, they dont want to be seen as just throwing money at the problem. They want to make sure that there are larger issues that are discussed and that there are longer more enduring remedies put in place that are going to solve the problem down there, thats brought us to this point. I mean, this isnt just about Immigration Reform. This is about kids at the border. This is about a crisis that needs to be dealt with. Lets move on to another topic. I want to get your take. Whats going on in mississippi . What is going to happen in the future of mississippi . So they they certified the Senate Runoff yesterday, and cochran actually made his lead even bigger. Its over 7,000 votes that he beat Chris Mcdaniel. I talked to Chris Mcdaniel on friday, and a lot of what he said is this isnt even about him. This is bigger than him, making it very clear hes going to fight on. Listen to this, guys. Is this about the integrity of the republican party, or is this about winning a race . No. Its bigger than a campaign. Its bigger than a candidate and me. No question about that. Do you even care about winning at this point . Everyone cares but thats not what this is about. What matters here is we fine the fraud where it exists, the irregularities, correct them and move forward so people can have faith in the system again. Right now there are many mississipians very angry and rightfully so because they feel like their votes were nullified or diluted based on the irregular conduct that we saw that night. I want to get your guys gut check on this. Whats going to happen here . Kevin . Well, look, i think any time you go through a campaign, particularly one that was this tough, the candidate always does feel like he owes it to his supporters to fight till the bitter end. I think he has Chris Mcdaniel is right in that he has the right to do this and that he feels like he should be exploring any irregularities all the way to the end, but i think because the certification has taken place, were talking about a lead thats probably over 7,000 votes right now. I find it very hard to believe that anything is going to be overturned. I expect that senator cochran is going to continue to be the republican nominee down there, and hes going to end up winning in november. Paul, this is a safe republican seat. One question that Chris Mcdaniel didnt really want to answer that i asked him on friday, i asked him if he thinks hes threatening or risking his political future if he continues on this fight, if he wants to have a future in mississippi politics. What do you think . Well, in mississippi politics as a republican. You know, he said this is bigger than me, certainly not bigger than his ego which i expect you couldnt even fit in the studio that day, but the risk the republicans face, in a very, very red state, the only real risk is splintering. Maybe mcdaniel gets so frustrated he leaves and forms a third party which, you know, we saw years ago. We saw ralph nader run as a left winger, and he split the vote enough that scalia and them could steal the race and give it to bush. Im not saying it could happen. Thats the one risk republicans have is they have to try to hold this guy in the party or they could have a third party. I mean, i dont sometimes i dont even know what to do with you, paul. The amount of oneliners you throw in there you dont. Imagine how i feel. I was going to say. I feel like you should take me out of the shot and squish you two together to fight it out. Please dont. Great to see you guys. Have a good one. Well talk to you soon. Thanks to you, kate. Ive got to get begalas coffee. Theres good stuff in that. Oh, paul. Perry after him now this morning, mcdaniel. Closing arguments are set to begin in august, and now the athletes fate lies in the hands or will after closing arguments of the judge there. Cnns robin kernow is live with the latest. Reporter we were just in court for ten minutes. After four months of being here in pretoria, nearly 4,000 pages of transcripts, also nearly 40 witnesses. Its all over. Now were waiting for those closing arguments, and also i think importantly in those ten minutes there was a very Crucial Point made by the defense. They said that they had wanted to call more witnesses but that many people refused to testify for Oscar Pistorius because they were scared of having their names and their voices broadcast on this court feed, so its the first time were getting some indication of how the intense media interest in this story might have been playing out in the courtroom and which might have had some impact in terms of whether or not Oscar Pistorius had a fair trial, and i think our legal analysts are saying this could be a point of appeal down the line. The winds are howling right now in okinawa and the surrounding islands. Stop illegal immigration. This is not a partisan issue, a human suffering issue. Their argument seems to be because the system is broken we shouldnt fix it. A boom. The case surrounding the death of Cooper Harris has gone from controversial to sensational. Were going to know if she played any kind of role. She looks at him and says, well, did you say too much . Good morning and welcome back to new day. John berman is here this morning chris is o. Lets begin with the breaking news were following. Powerful typhoon slamming into japan this morning. It could be the strongest storm in decades, and its already lashing the island of okinawa where the u. S. Has military assets in place. The storm is packing intense winds, up to 125 miles an hour and could bring violent waves of up to 45 feet. More than 600,000 people have been told to evacuate the islands coast. Let bring in a typhoon storm chaser, james reynolds, from okinawa, joining us by the phones. James, what are you seeing on the ground. Weve got some video were playing and what are you seeing . Hi, well, its been a very long day here. I actually made it to one of the smaller islands southwest of okinawa and we were literally, you know, in the jaws of the storm for almost an entire day. I just show you how large and sprawling and powerful this typhoon is. Its moving away from us now and the weather is improving. Earlier today i saw the biggest wave ive ever seen in my life crashing into the south and east coast of this island. Strong winds, heavy rain. The islands, its Getting Better here, but the next turn is for the mainland. I mean, that really says something because you see a lot of these storms. What are the officials there telling folks . Really its just a case of stay at home, you know, hole up inside. Dont go outside because its too dangerous. The local weather authority, they issued an emergency warning which really goes to show how seriously authorities are taking this storm to keep people safe and out of harms way. If you stepped outside, whats it like to see the storm surge and waves, up to 45 feet were hearing, and then the winds, they can pack such a punch . Reporter well, it can just be absolutely overwhelming. When youre really in the storms path, blinding rain, screaming wind and if youre near the coast, it can be extremely hazardous. The fortunate fact is these islands are very solidly constructed. They build for typhoons every year. People cant evacuate off the island and they do protect themselves against them and theres been minimal damage where i am. They say this could be one of the strongest storms to hit japan in decades. They are also saying this comes at a bad time. This is coming at tail end of japans summer rainy season. Flooding after the fact a huge concern . Reporter yeah. I think the real main concern as this moves away from the island, it will be really the flood sweat, so many mountain ranges, areas that are prone to flash floods and landslides, and its pretty clear that this typhoon will dump a lot of rain on this region, and as weve seen in the past really the main danger comes from with the flooding, flash floods and landslides. James reynolds, thanks so much for joining us and giving us perspective. Video speaks for itself. Great to hear from you. You stay safe. Vivid descriptions of what been a long, long day. Now to the other big story were following this morning. Escalating violence in the middle east. Israel and gaza exchanging rocket fire with no end in sight. The leader of the Islamic Jihad saying they have fired 60 rockets as israel keeps hammering the militant group hamas. Israels defense minister saying the offensive may go on for days and may even expand, he says. Want to bring in ben wedeman live right now in gaza city who has been surveying the damage there. Ben . Reporter yes. Actually you mentioned the rockets fired by Islamic Jihad. I think we saw some of them being fired and some immediate israeli air strikes in response not far from here. Were actually now to the northeast of gaza city where theres several homes in this area that have been hit. This house behind me was hit about an hour ago. Up the street another house was hit. In that instance two people were injured. When i was walking down the street, i found this in the street, a very large piece of metal shrapnel. This gives you an idea of when these missiles strike what happens. They go whiz willing all over the place. According to palestinian medical sources only 27 people have been wounded and one person, a person affiliated with the hamas movement, has been killed. They have destroyed up to now since yesterday evening 14 houses. Many of these houses belonging to people affiliated with the hamas movement. For israel legitimate targets but keep in mind that they are not living by themselves, and in all of these houses they are women and children and old people, but in most cases, john, they get a call and they are told to leave the house immediately. Most people in their right mind do exactly that, and thats when the house was struck so a relatively low number of casualties given the number of air strikes into gaza over the last 24 hours. John . Rockets flying out and bombs coming in. That number and the damage could only increase. Ben wedeman for us in gaza. Appreciate it. Want to talk immigration right now, because if youre just waking up, over the last hour or so theres been a fascinating political back and forth between president obama and governor rick perry of texas. The white house really just about an hour ago releasing a letter accepting an invitation from the Texas Governor for the president to meet in texas on the issue of immigration and this growing number of immigrants coming over the border into texas. Will that meeting happen though . That is an open question. While were thinking about that the president today will ask for 2 billion in emergency funding to deal with this crisis, a crisis really now at the forefront, both in washington and along the border. Lets go to the white house right now where our Senior Correspondent jim acosta is there. Quite a morning. Reporter absolutely. Rick perriy has been one of the president s toughest critics on this issue and we can report that president obama, as you said, is inviting Texas Governor rick perry for a meeting in dallas on wednesday with faith leaders and other Immigration Reform advocates to talk about this border crisis. The invitation comes in the form of this letter right here from senior white house adviser Valerie Jarrett in response to a request from Texas Governor rick perry to meet with the president. That came out late yesterday. The president responding with this letter. Its unclear at this point whether or not the two will actually sit down and meet. A Senior Administration official just told me a few moments ago that basically the ball is in their court, that they have been in touch. That the staffs have been in touch with one another, but they have not nailed down whether or not this meeting on wednesday will occur. Meanwhile, as you said, john, the president is expected to officially submit that funding request to Congress Later on this morning for more than 2 billion for a surge of Border Security, border judges and expanded detention facilities to house the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors and undocumented immigrants flooding into the u. S. Over the last several months and then later on this week the white house is going to send an additional request to ask for expanded Legal Authority for the department of homeland to streamline the adjudication process, the white house signaling yesterday that the vast what mah majority of these children will probably not have the legal standing to stay in this country. They are going to have to go back home but the big headline at this point, john, as you know is whether or not the meeting between president obama and Texas Governor rick perry will happen. All eyes will be on whether or not well see that texas showdown later this week. Love to see them talk, talking cant hurt at this point. Jim acosta at the white house. Appreciate it. Thanks, jim, and john. When undocumented immigrants are apprehended they are taken to a detention facility for processing. Republican congress jim bryden went to one of the facilities in his home state of oklahoma. The center holds more than 1,000 undocumented officials and when he arrived the officials blocked him in and wouldnt you a lou him there. The congressman is joining us to discuss this and the crisis at the border we were talking to jim acosta about. You were upset, wanted to gain access to the facility and were not able to gain access to that facility. What did you want to see . Well, first of all, there is human suffering here, and as members of congress weve got to figure out why. The president is going to ask us for 2 billion and in order to solve the problem we need to understand the problem and before we spend 2 billion we dont want to exacerbate the problem which is what a lot of us fear well be doing here. Ultimately theres human suffering, theres stories of children, as much as a third of the females down there, have been abused and raped on the way to the United States. Were talking about human trafficking. Children are being leased because adults in Central America believe that if they come across with a child they are going to be more likely able to stay, and so the the crisis here is not just that we have a Border Security problem. We have a humanitarian crisis and need to deal this in a responsible way. Members of congress, if hes going to ask us for 2 billion, we should have unfettered access. Congressman, they invaded by inviting you back next week for another visit. Are you going to go . Yes, they invited me back next week. It will actually be on the 12th. Interestingly they also had a media day on the 10th which is thursday, and during that media day they sent out an email in oklahoma and i think across the nation and they said the media can come. It will be a 40minute tour, but you cant ask questions. You cant talk to the staff. You cant talk to the medical doctors. You cant talk to the children. If you would like to take pictures, you cant do that, but well send pictures to you. This is the kind of media they had in the former soviet union. This is not the kind of unfettered access that we expect in the United States, is especially if the president is going to ask us for their 2 billion. Youre going to get there and see the facility. Youre talking about the 2 billion so lets talk about this immediate crisis. Theres an immediate crisis on the southwest border. The president is going to ask for 2 billion. More details are going to come out today. I know youre going to say i cant answer this question until i get details but i really want to give me your gut check here. Hes going to ask the money is going to go to more immigration judges, more detention facilities. He says its emergency funds to help stem the tide, the flow of immigrants coming in. Can you support giving the president these emergency funds . Before i became a member of congress i did counterillicit trafficking with the United States navy, im a navy pilot and spent a lot of time in el salvador and i can tell you that the crime now there is bad, as it the poverty. But its no bad today than it was two years ago or three years ago or four years ago. The difference between today and two or three or four years ago is that we still have an open border on the south side of the United States and the president has created this perception down in Central America that if you come you can stay. Then what do you want to do with the kids, 2 billion is going to be a step in the right direction of trying to stem this flow of immigrants coming into the country. The white house says most of these children are not going to meet the threshold. They will be sent back. What to you think should be done with the kids . Well, i think if youre going to have a system where 85 of the children that come and show up in these facilities, 85 have a phone number and they are being released to somebody in the United States that becomes their custodian, when they get released, 90 of them dont come back for their court date. We have to do something very quickly to make sure that children are not just released, and these processing facilities have become illegal immigration processing facilities rather than a facility that solves the crisis. The white house is going to ask for expanded Legal Authority for the department of Homeland Security to be able to in part expedite the process of depo deporting these children because they are dealing with a law passed during the Bush Administration relating to trafficking that might be hindering this process. Can you support that change . Again, im going to have to read the legislation, but certainly something has to be done. We need not only bothered security. We need interior enforcement and if it looks like interior enforcement is going to solve this crisis, then i could support that. Well see if you can support that, that would be good to see. By and large you say that this isnt essentially youre saying this is a crisis that the president should have seen coming. The Senate Passed a bill. Republicans have not supported that in the house, but a lot of people are pointing the finger saying if youre not going to support the senate bill, thats fine, but if you guys think this is such a problem then do something. So youre confusing two very important and distinct issues. One is Border Security which is necessary for im not confusion it. I,000 know theres an immediate problem at the border. By and large this is entering into the larger immigration debate. So Border Security which is important for National Sovereignty and security is one element and anner tiely separate issue is immigration. We all want to talk about immigration, but our National Security and National Sovereignty is a separate issue. They need to be dealt with separately and certainly we need to start by securing the southern border of the United States. Are you going to push any legislation on that . Sure. Weve already passed legislation. If you go back to 2006, long before i was here, the house of representatives passed the secure fence act. It was enacted in parts of the United States very effectively. It cut down in many places 90 of the Illegal Immigrants crossing the southern border. Unfortunately, it didnt go far enough, and not only first of all it did go far enough. It just never was enforced fully and interestingly the this is a big reason why we have this crisis ensuing right now. Congressman, thank you so much for your time. Let us know what you see when you were able to get into that facility on the 12th. Look forward to hearing what you see and what kind of solutions youre pushing for. Congressman jim bridenstine, thank you very much. More of your headlines. Officials in chicago are imploring people that live there to put away their weapons after a violent fourth of july weekend. Overnight a thrill seekers nightmare, dozens of people suspended 20 feet in the air trapped for hours on a roller coaster in Southern California leading to quite a dramatic rescue. Reporter the front car of the ninja roller coaster seen dangling from the tracks at Six Flags Magic Mountain near los angeles after a tree branch fell, derailing the car and trapping 22 passengers and leaving them suspended about 20 feet in the air. We saw the ninja go into the trees, and it was just a lot of leaf noise and then cracking noises and crashing noises and a lot of screaming. Reporter four riders were hurt after the train car was left hanging at a 45degree angle facing the ground for nearly three hours. The car came around the corner and hit the tree. Just fell. Like a loud boom. Reporter two people were taken to the hospital after a specialized urban search and rescue team worked to free the passengers. Climbing atop the coaster and using a thick rope to tie the front of the car to the track above. The people that were on the ride, like their family and friends were kind of freaking out a little bit. Thats why we were like what happened. Reporter a reddit user whose sister was on the train posted this picture. Instead of operating like a typical roller coaster the ninja attraction suspends riders from the track and as this video shows the coaster is surrounded by trees. Scary because it it could have been us. Reporter derailment is the latest in a series of hoeprofile roller coaster accidents at other parks in recent years and the third incident in the past week. Six flags released a statement that reads the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, and as a procaution the ride will remain closed until a thorough inspection of the area is complete. It looks as they they need to do tree abatement. Its really overgrown. The trees sounds like one of the trees, had actually havent had a lot of rain, one of the trees broke a limb and right on to the tracks. If you run in there, you have to wait on the roller coaster to get out there. A whole lot of problems all at once. Thats a tough one. John a real paradise so nice, so nice proud to be from the Virgin Islands and the whole place nice [ female announcer ] to experience your Virgin Islands nice, book one of our summer packages today. Welcome back, everyone. A contentious debate growing over the issue of gun violence. An 8 spike in shootings here in new york city has many people questioning whether the controversial policy of stop and frisk should have been suspended. It was suspended now about one year ago so lets discuss this issue. Lets debate it. Lou polombo is here to discuss and marc lament hill and host of huffpo live. I want to lay down the parameters of where this discussion is going because i think you have diametrically opposed views on stop and frisk. Been a year since it was suspended, lou. Weve seen this spike and this rise in shootings this year. Stop and frisk, the lack of it. Is it responsible for that spike . Most definitely. I mean, unfortunately, stop and frisk is a very necessary tool and eliminating firearms or handguns or whatever form of weapon they are using in the street. Stop right there. Marc lamont mill, the spike in shootings, would it have been lower in stop and frisk . 8 is an increase, a spike is a much. We dont know yet. We have to unpack the data and figure out whether or not eliminating stop and frisk is the cause of this. I know in 2013 there was a 50 dedrese crease in stop and frisk degrees and 25 drop in crime. A variety of factors to consider here. Lou, what about that, the numbers, as marc is talking about. 8 rise, maybe not a spike but a rise in shootings. Still, the Second Lowest number of shootings i think, you know, on record here in the city. You know, if the question is there a correlation between the increase in shootings and the abandonment of the stop and frisk policy the answer unequivocally is yes. It takes a little bit of time. Based on what . Based on what . Based on experience and im going to make reference specifically for you, mark. When bill bratton first came into his job as Police Commissioner approximately 20 years ago, we had over 2,200 homicides in the city every year. Stop and frisk was one of the most effective tools that was implemented. We reduced the homicides to approximately 500. You cannot arbitrate that, marc, thats the statistical truth. It takes a little bit of time until it filters to the street that the police are in the hands off mode and thats why theres a lag time that occurs 2013 and the present time and why increases are starting to take effect. The simple truth of the matter is the individuals that carry out these acts with firearms realize now that the police have been instructed to lay off. They have no fear or reticence about carrying weapons. Before, when they implemented the stop and frisk, stop question and question, they realized there was a high likelihood they were going to be found out if they were carrying weapons. Marc . First there, wasnt a high likelihood. 89 of the time when they stopped someone and frisked them, they were found innocent of everythinging right, not just guns, but also drugs and other activity so in general what time frame are you speaking, to marc . Look at the nypd data from 2000 even to last year the the most successful rate police had was something marc, and the reason and the reason you made a sires of arguments. Another point here is that it doesnt work. Again, statistically it does not work. Weve found effectively most people who are stopped dont have anything so if somehow people with guns think that police have a high likelihood of finding them the data doesnt bear that out but a whole other range of reasons why this is problematic. One, youre saying that theres unequivocal statistical evidence and then say this is based on experience. If you look at the range of factors that go into it, its stop and frisk and Community Policing and high engagement, targeting populations likely to engage in criminal behavior. Taking a whole bunch of people and pulling them over and stopping and frisking doesnt seem to work. Youre right about that, my friend, but the reality is this. Youre speaking current time and im speaking not just currently but over a span of over 20 years, but i do agree with you. It wasnt something that happened over 20 years. All these guns and crime and suddenly we stopped and pulled everyone over and suddenly crime went down, but even if that was true. Thats what happened. The only thing police did was stone and frisk, i would like to think its Community Policing. Theres no subtuite for stopping and frisking people looking for guns. Of course. And if youre asking me if i were to stop every american on the street arbitrarily i would find guns and at some point that would reduce crimes. It violates the Fourth Amendment but beyond that its not the most effective way. Its not the only tool. I would argue that with you and the statistics that existed 20 years ago when you were a young man support the fact that stop and frisk is effective in getting guns off the street. What were experiencing now is an increase in shootings and weapons on the street because the police have been told to lay off and the element in our society and culture that carry firearms are not fear until anymore. They were never fearful. 20 years ago they were fearful and thats supported by the fact that the homicides dropped from 2,200 to 500. Thats tabs lotulelei not true. 20 years ago when you were a younger man thats not case. Both young men and growing older by the second. By the end of the summer well have more statistics, lets hope they are not bad statistics one way or the other and police say they are watching, putting 400 cops on the street, taking them from out behind the desk and putting them on the street and hopefully that will do something. Kate . Coming up next on new day, something out of a movie, quite honestly. Was a cuban government behind attempt to smear a u. S. Senator. Thats a blockbuster charming in a new report. Well take a look at it in a second. Welcome back to new day. Heres a look at your headlines at almost half past the hour. Japan facing its strongest typhoon in decades. Andrew rector filed a defamation lawsuit against two espn commentator, the yankees and Major League Baseball for showing him sleeping during an april broadcast of the yankees red sox game. Both teams, by the way, so bad that sleeping is the only responsible action. So says the red sox fan. Isnt it assumed that you will be on camera once you walk into the stadium . I dont think its so much showing him. Its a public event, one that is going to be broadcast. I think its the comments that he most took issue with. 10 million. Be careful guys. When i doze off. You can film me dozing off and say whatever you want and ill only charge you a million. John king, wake up, john, wick up. Welcome to inside politics. Joined by fellow suffering red sox fan. The red sox should be paying us to stay awake. Well said. Thats how bad it has been. Good morning, folks. A lot to cover inside politics this morning so lets get there quickly. Share their reporting and insides, lets start with rick perry and president barack obama. Sometimes you get what you ask for. Governor perry said hes met with the president on the tarmac, a handshake to talk aboutig issues like immigration. That wouldnt do. See them there back in 2013 so he wants a meeting with the president , and the white house this morning overnight sends him a letter saying, sure, lets meet. The president will be in texas tomorrow, margaret. Will have a meeting in dallas. Not going to border. A lot of republicans said go to the border and guess a firsthand look of the crisis down there. He wont do that but is meeting with faith leaders and immigration activists in dallas and says, governor per be, come on in. I would say a smart counter from the white house but also an opportunity for governor perry, no . I think its pretty hard for both of them to resist this for completely different reasons, but it is sort of the ball is in governor perrys court now. My most recent conversation, have not yet heard back about whether this will happen, but its a real official offer and theres a roundtable event they have put together that will serve as instead of him going to the border. He couldnt just go and do fundraisers, as a certain point thats untenable. Come to the event without having him on the border in a bad situation, and and now this has become a much more interesting visit. And perry has revived himself. Had a disastrous president ial Campaign Last time. Couldnt name the three cabinet agencies he would cut, it was awful. Reviving himself slowly, reaching out to key activists on the country and on this issue hes restored his National Prominence being at a Point Counterpoint with the president. Whats he looking for in a meeting like this . Is it all partisan or is there a greater opportunity here . Something that both teams can get out of this and i texted a perry advisor, havent heard back whether they will take this meeting. Hard for them to say no. It elevates him. At some point the white house, you know, called his bluff, so to speak and now he kind of has to accept it. But it puts him eye to eye with the president of the United States and this does elevate rick perry, like you said, who is try to climb back to prominence and be taken seriously so its probably to his political advantage. The letter, Valerie Jarrett, the president s Senior Adviser that says thank you for your concern over the humanitarian crisis. The president is going to ask for more than 2 billion for steps on the border. Look, the white house is doing this for political purposes and governor perry doing it for political purposes. A majoror policy issue here. Might they actually seize this opportunity to say we disagree with this, this and this and will fight that another day but how about we agree on this, this and this and maybe governor per desend a message to the fellow republicans and say we may be at odds but when it comes to increasing Border Security, speeding up the processing of these children well cut a deal. One thing that really damaged rick perry in the last president ial campaign is he took kind of a reasonable approach to immigration. Remember in that orlando debate where he really cratered even before the oops moment, calling for a texas d. R. E. A. M. Act and got booed by conservative activists. Hes tried to seek out a middle ground and interesting to see what he does in todays meeting. The president wants 2 billion to expand resources on the border for these children. Perry wants these kids to be turned around and sent back immediately so its hard to see where the middle ground is right there. Thats what the white house is count willing on, any meeting in the middle will mean the money they are asking for. How active do they become on child deportations . Whatever authority they get from congress, whatever do they do with it. In divided government you cant get any progress unless you make a deal. Either get nothing and the political deal. If you want to deet deal with this crisis, make a deal. Were 119 days away from the election but the candidate who lost the mississippi runoff says hes not done yet. Remember, Chris Mcdaniel thinks a number of africanamericans voted illegally in the rubboff a couple weeks back and hes planning on suing though hes not gone to court yet. His team keeps saying they will go to court. Well see when that happens and among those joining his cause is ted cruz, the tea party favorite, freshman senator from texas. Listen to him last night on the mark levine radio program. What happened in mississippi was appalling. Primaries are always rough and tumble, but the conduct of the washington, d. C. Machine in the mississippi runoff was incredibly disappointing. We know, peter, that ted cruz was a Chris Mcdaniel supporter in mississippi. The thing that strikes me though is this has been hard for him this year but he still officially has a title, does he not, as a deputy something or other at the National RepublicanSenatorial Committee which is the washington machine of which he speaks. The very people who wanted senator cochran to win in this election and are bashing their heads against this wall about this continued mcdaniel call for a recount or to throw out some votes. Yeah, hes a member of the nrc, vice chairman. This has to just further aggravate not the chairman of the nrc but Mitch Mcconnell who watches the republicans in the senate watching ted cruz sound off again. Kind of takes this race which the Political Class has paid attention to and conservative movement has paid attention but it elevates, too, and brings even more election, an outside voice taking a little bit not the only outside voice. Hillary clinton did this fascinating interview with cspan with her book over the past weekend in which this very same issue came up and she praised cochran and gave him a shoutout for saying he did exactly what hes supposed to do by reaching out and courting these black democratic voters. I wonder if thats a position she would hold further down the line. The question about the specific race is at the moment that had co thad cochran the nominee and most will likely win it. If youre going to go to court, take it to court. Democrats thought here was their unit to slay a giant, Alison Grimes the democrat running against the Senate Republican leader mitchman m mcconnell in kentucky. Hopes to be the majority leader. The republicans need a net lead of six leads but in a lot of trouble looking at poll numbers but shes mid a couple of tactical mistakes in her campaign lately. An outside group with a new ad questioning Alison Grimes saying, hey, what do you stand for . What do we know about Alison Grimes, the Bowling Green daily news says she waffles on the issues. Hides from voters. The Herald Leader says shes impossible to commit. So this race, margaret, looked at this a couple months ago, the ones democrats thought the republicans knocked off Senate Leader tom daschle and now well get Mitch Mcconnell . I think its tough to beat Mitch Mcconnell and its always been really tough. Why not go for it, but the democrats are trying to build a bench in places like kentucky and texas of women who take on, you know, a sort of near impossible feat and see how far they can get and i think this is what is part of when you see Elizabeth Warren coming to ken cone to raise awareness and money for people. I said early on she had a chance but had to be near perfect. Hasnt been near perfect. Hasnt been and this is the knock on her since the beginning, that shes not ready for prime phil. The nrc, speaking of them, unfortunately, called her in the beginning of the race an empty dress which was an unfortunate phrase coming from a man but if you talk to democrats there they do think shes got ebb better. Been too cautious with the media, cautious on policy. Afraid to take stands on certain things, running away from obama on coal, for example, but she has gotten better. I talked to one donor over the weekend who is expecting her to post a really Strong Fundraising quarter, maybe over 4 million which would be a really good number but almost 8 million of outside spending in the race, twothirds of that has gone attacking her and supporting mcconnell. The one republican seat, georgia sometimes, too. Democrats looking at the map, not trending in their favor. Margaret, peter, thanks. Hope mr. Berman didnt fall asleep during our segment. First of all theres too much yellow here to begin with but beyond that, theres another big problem. Its being called the dissed kiss. What was supposed to be a celebratory moment for a Tour De France cyclist has become a viral sensation when his lips and so much more are left hanging in limbo in such a public way. Jeanne moos has more on the cringe worthy moment. Reporter kissing should be like riding a bike. You never forget how, but instead, it can get so awkward, watch when the italian who won stage two of the Tour De France angles for the traditional kisses from the podium girls. The first one goes fine, but the second girl leaves him hanging, stuck pretending to fix his own collar. Its being analyzed in slow motion, looped in a sixsecond vine. But the cyclist is in good company when it comes to having his lips left in limbo. Even former president s end up in puckered up purgatory. The intended target was hillary. Bill ended up kissing air while hillary wound up being kissed by then president ial nominee barack obama. Oh reporter who himself has had his share of kissing mishaps including the time he accidentally kissed his Vice President s wife right on the smacker and the Vice President has found himself in a threeway kissing muddle. Talk about having your kiss dissed, erica badou was clowning around in a wpix reporters live shot and then she tried to kiss him and labeouf obviously excuse me reporter who eventually tweeted sorry mario to the reporter. Miley cyruss kiss was dised by kathy perry when miley went a little too far with her tongue. Of course a lot of kissing confusion can be blamed on the ageold angle dilemma. German researcher concluded after spying on 124 couples that 65 of people tend to tilt their heads to the right, rather than to the left, going in for a kiss. President obama was in the minority with his left tilt approach to kissing Supreme Court nominee elena kagan, but dont blame his lefthandedness. Many famous movie kisses start with a right tilt. Cary grant plays it both ways in notorious. German reseveners think its a womb thing. Babies tend to turn their heads to the right. U. S. Typhoon neoguri is turning into the regions most powerful storm in decades. The island of okinawa was hit by the storm with high winds and u. S. Military bases have moved their planes off the island. Lets go to will ripley, who is live in tokyo, tracking all of the latest. I talked to a storm chaser last hour, will, and he was saying it was something hes never seen before. You know, the commander of kadena airbase says this is the strongest storm to hit okinawa in 15 years. One building collapsed, debris is scattered all over the streets. The winds are still ripping in the area even though the storm passed okinawa and the islands nearby, on a course toward mainland japan. If you look at the storm by the numbers, 15mileanhour winds right now, 600,000 people under voluntary evacuation advisories, another 106,000 are still without power, its now evening so that potentially causes a safety issue for them. Also more than 100 flights canceled, the main airport in okinawa closed, 14,000 passengers grounded. This storm is headed for mainland japan and it is rainy season here, where a lot of the ground is already flooded. There have been people that were evacuated because of flooding, so this typhoon and all the rain it could potentially bring later this week could be problematic for millions of people, in kt fa, even right now here in tokyo, people are preparing for this storm later this week. John . Were talking about rain levels on handle. Well watch them closely. The mideast conflict dueling rocket attacks, neither side showing signs of backing down. Islamic jihad fired 60 rockets at israel in response to what it calls unjust aggression. Overnight israel hammered hamas with deadly air strikes. Israels defense minister saying this offensive may go on for days, it could grow, the aggression is intensifying on both side after the kidnappings and killings of israeli and palestinian. Diana, what is the latest . Reporter what the forces are trying to do is target what they call the rockets. The bases of rocket terrorism coming out of the gaza strip behind me and since last night they say there have been 100 rocket attacks into israel, so they are targeting the homes of hamas militants. They are targeting for example concealed rocket launchers terror command centers. These are the tarkts they are trying to hit with clear precision, all of this in an operation called operation protective edge. Lets take a look. Israel is now at the ready, even sending troops to positions alongside the gaza border. This as rocket attacks between the two continue to escalate. Overnight Israeli Defense forces say they struck 50 targets and air strikes across the gaza strip. At least ten injured. Israel now launching a clear offensive. Their operation even given an official name, protective edge, using increased targeted air strikes and calling out several hundred reservists to build up troops for possible ground maneuvers. Israels change in tactic comes in response to an uptick in rocket attacks from xwa zha with some 80 on monday alone. Those strikes forcing hundreds in neighboring summer camps to be sent back home. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will do whatever is necessary to stop at tacks. The hamas spokesman issuing a battlecry on facebook. The enemy has crossed the red lines and will be made to pay the price for its crimes. Hamas even showing off its weaponry and a propaganda video on their military website. These explosive scenes of violence just painting a backdrop to the mounting anger in jerusalem. Tensions in the city at their worst in a decade. After the murders and beating of both jewish and palestinian teenagers. And john, we know that Six Palestinians within the gaza strip have been killed as a result of those air strikes. There have been some 24 or so injured. Hamas has threatened that it will increase the radius of its missiles, which are already falling just short or being aimed just short of cities like tel aviv. From violence overseas, thanks to diana magnay, a different violence at home. In chicago the citys top cop is lashing out blaming weak gun laws for the violence, the worst of the year so far. 21 shooting incidents on sunday alone. At least nine people dead, dozens more wounded. Cnns George Howell live in chicago reporting this morning. Reporter john, good morning. Look in chicago, on the fourth of july some celebrated the fourth with fireworks. In other neighborhoods, though, they had to take cover amid the crack of gunfire, mainly on the citys south side. Even though police said they had a plan in place, the problem especially on sunday, it just didnt work. The shock remains. [ siren ] one day after a bloody weekend, the mayor, the Police Superintendent, and Community Members stand together. The gun violence that was this part of this weekend is totally unacceptable to anybody from the city of chicago. Reporter more than 60 people were shot, 14 killed, over the long Holiday Weekend, including Marlon Williams niece, tanya gu gunn. I feel hurt. I will never be able to see my niece again. Reporter sadly, its something many in chicago neighborhoods have come to fear and expect when the weather warms up. Ladies and gentlemen, its groundhog day here in chicago. Reporter Police SuperintendentGary Mccarthy says part of the problem is that its too easy to get guns like these that were seized by police, but its the guns police couldnt get that led to so many deaths. We obviously had a plan. The plan included putting hundreds more officers on the streets at the times that we needed them in the places where we needed them, and what were the results . The results were a lot of shootings and a lot of murders unfortunately. Reporter even though police say the murder rate is down from last year. To me its just talk. Its just, i dont believe theyre really doing their jobs. Reporter theres a feeling of frustration lingering on this street. Feeling that tragedies like this shouldnt be accepted as normal. What i do next is, its hard to say what im going to do next. Im just going to prepare for her burial. Its no doubt every time you talk to people when these things happen, its a tragic situation, the numbers of people who are shot and wounded are shocking. But it is important to put it in perspective. According to the police count of homicides, that homicides by this time of year, kate, are down, compared to what they were a year before. So they are on pace to see the murder rate lower than what it was the year before but again, weekends like this are very difficult for everyone. And its difficult to square those two facts seeing that violence over the weekend and hearing the homicide rate is trending downward. George howell watching it for us, an important story in chicago, thanks, george. Lets turn now to the growing border crisis weve been talking about this morning. President obama has offered to meet with the Texas Governor rick perry over immigration when he visits the state tomorrow. However, he still has not, he has no plans publicly to visit the border, something weve heard he has a lot of pressure on him to do. Amid all of this, a small California City has become a flash point in the immigration debate. Dozens of protesters faced off in murrieta monday over the transfer of migrants to a Detention Center in the town. Joining us is mayor alan long of murrieta. Thank you for your time. Good morning, kate. Good morning. You see as if if we see more and more of these images every day. You have said that at least some of the angry protests are coming into your city from out of town. Who are these protesters . Oh, absolutely. We have causes coming from all other. Our police chief reported that the estimate was 70 at the peapeak were not from murrieta. Again this say national problem. It stirred up a lot of emotions and people came from all over the country to our doorsteps here in murrieta. What are you saying to the folks coming out of town. Do you get a good sense of who they are and exactly where theyre coming from . You know, its really varied. Lot of different locations. Our message to everyone is that keep it peaceful, keep it sane, and we are going to have Law Enforcement out there to make sure everyone is safe and that the law is enforced. Thats our message to the protesters. Reporter youre dealing with this on the ground. Are you concerned at this point that it could turn violent, that it isnt going to remain peaceful . So far, that hasnt been the case. I was out there yesterday. There was a small group on each side, probably about 30 people each, and they were shouting back and forth. Police have done a great job. They have roped off areas and the protesters seemed to assemble on one side or the other, and theres about a tenfoot space in between them to prevent any type of conflict, but you know, unfortunately there was some behavior that we dont endorse, and is not welcome here. I think you saw some video of that unfortunately, that sevensecond clip now is a reflection of murrieta, and were really not proud of that. Why, mr. Mayor, has murrieta become such a flash point . Why has it become the center of this crisis . Well, i think the general public really is at a boiling point. Many people are frustrated at the federal government for many different reasons. When you bring such a controversial item to a very small town who, by the way, had information from Border Patrol agents before this was planned, before the city even knew about it. We were getting phone calls of concern, rumors, and what we found out at a town hall meeting this past wednesday, some of the rumors and some of the concerns the citizens had were verified. Mr. Mayor, what do you think should happen to the migrants, the undocumented immigrants that are coming through your town, that are being sent to your facilities . What do you think is the fix . Right. Well, great question. If you listen to both sides of the protest lines carefully i think theyre all asking for the same thing. Thats why ive come up with, theres a third side. Its not one of two sides. Theres a third side where people just want a fair and efficient and legal process, and that efficiency is whats lacking. We were assured that these people were taken care of, and that they were healthy, they were screened through three different processes and come to find out thats not the case. These people have been shipped all over the country. Theyre sick, theyre ill. They needed to be cared for as soon as they cross the border to make sure that theyre healthy. Mr. Mayor, the president s headed to texas tomorrow, going to be meeting possibly with governor rick perry to talk about immigration issues as part of his visit. Would you like him to come to your town in california . Do you think that would help . Hes more than welcome, but what really needs to happen is a fix in the policy, and i followed his plan. We did see some movement on that over the weekend, and just yesterday i understand that part of that 2 billion plan is to send the resources needed to the border. Thats a fix temporarily. The longterm fix needs to be m Immigration Reform. There seems to be two things going on in tandem, the immediate crisis you face at the border and the larger debate on Immigration Reform, and for better or worse, whether you welcome it or not, murrieta has become the center of that contentious debate. Mayor alan long, thank you for your time. Thank you. Of course. Michaela . Murrieta caught in the middle of it all. Staying in Southern California with breaking news overnight, a frightening scene for 22 people on a roller coaster that jumped the tracks in california. People in Washington State are lining up at Recreational Marijuana shops to get their fix and to be a part of history. 24 licensed stores will begin selling marijuana as early as 8 00 a. M. Pacific time. In the meantime new york just became the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana. It lets doctors prescribe marijuana in a nonsmokeable form to patients with certain serious conditions. Interesting here for the people in washington, what theyre doing and not doing. They dont have edibles yet available. Just the smokeable form, theyre trying to learn from some of the things that happened in colorado. Each state is watching others how they do it and some of the mistakes. Interesting test cases. Will be a while before you have consensus what works and doesnt, if it works at all. Indeed. A new series of warrants reveals what investigators are looking for in the case of a father accuseded of leaving his little toddler to die in a hot car. They show police are looking at the computer files, Financial Statements, and xrated cell phone messages. Joining us, someone who knows justin ross and Cooper Harris personally. Joining us on the phone from alabama is chris wilkinson. Good morning to you. Good morning. I understand you met justin ross in alabama. Tell us how you know him. He was referred to me by a mutual friend, knew i was looking for somebody to help me with web design and we worked pretty closely together over the phone for quite some time until i had my website up. Do you feel you were friends . I thought we were. Later on when i ran into him at a Football Game he showed his son off to me and i played with cooper for a minute, and you know, just im totally confused and baffled by all that weve heard, to be perfectly honest. This is not the ross harris we know. So the ross harris that you know, what was your impression of him, lets say as a father, as a professional, because you said he did some computer work for you. Yes, he knew his craft very well. Everything that he told me computer wise, you know, i instilled in my website. When news of the searches came out, i was like, theyve got to be making this stuff up, because ross is a computer genius. He wouldnt leave searches like that if he was going to do searches like that. It does make you wonder, it does make you wonder, doesnt it, if he knew so much about computers, why would he leave such a footprint behind. You know, just i dont have an answer to that, because obviously the person he portrayed himself to be and either the person he is now or always has been are not the same folks. Theres a disconnect there somewhere. I really dont know how to explain that. We know that police are looking at all sorts of things. Theyre looking at his computer as we were just talking about with you, and that theyre really just scratching the surface. Did he come off it seeming like a secretive person to you, chris . Not at all. I mean, you know, theyre hes just a normal guy. I mean, ive heard him described as irresponsible and, you know, character out of animal house and all kinds of pejorative terms that i just would not use about him. He seemed like a responsible, nice, decent guy. You know, there are people to this day that still believe in him, because this just does not mesh with the ross harris they know. Do you still believe in him . You know, im a person that believes in the evidence, and as it stacks up and you know, from what ive heard so far, i just, i cant really say that i do. Either, like i said, the ross harris we knew doesnt exist and never has, or theres been some kind of mental issue thats happened, and you know, obviously its caused all this heartbreak and turmoil, and you know, thats something that cant ever be recovered from. So you know, do i believe in the ross harris i knew three years ago . Yes. Do i believe in the ross harris i see on tv right now . Unhuh, absolutely not. Do you have any sense or reason to believe that they were struggling as a couple . That they were having Financial Difficulties . Some of the details that are emerging that investigators are looking into, and some of the items that theyre revealing in court are pretty startling. Well, to be fair, you know, i heard her in passing on the phone. I didnt know her. Everybody has marital issues. Sure. So that part of it doesnt surprise me. You know, the fact that she knew these kinds of things were going on, or so it would appear, and that didnt bother her does surprise me, but again, people do odd things to hang onto their marriage, and until youre in that situation, you may or may not acquiesce to that. You know, you just never know until youre there, but i am surprised and im sure that his mother and father and family were quite surprised to hear what was going on in court. I just cant imagine what their reaction must have been when they heard about all this sexting and carrying on, to be quite honest. You make a very good point. John . Thank you so much, michaela. Did the Obama Administration have i a warning that sectarian violence would start if Nuri Al Maliki stayed in power . He supported Nuri Al Maliki but eventually raised the alarm saying in 2006 i helped introduce maliki is the u. S. Ambassador, recommending him as a promising option for Prime Minister. By 2010, however, i was urging the Vice President of the United States and the white house senior staff to withdraw their support for in malle. Ali khedery worked with five u. S. Ambassadors, currently the chairman and ceo of dragomon partners. Ali thank you for being with us. Appreciate it. Thank you for having me. I want to do things here. I want to get your elevator pitch. Back in 2006, what did you like so much about Nuri Al Maliki . What did you think he would be such a good Prime Minister . Well, we have to go back to 2006 and remember that iraq had just plunged into a civil war as a result of the samarra mosque bombing. The Shia Alliance were deadlocked between two leaders at the time. What i and several colleagues recommended to the ambassador was that we find somebody who was more of an Arab Nationalist who was more isolated from iran, somebody who was thus politically weak and would have to build a Broad Coalition among iraqs other leaders in order to lead the country out of the civil war and frankly, that hes exactly what Prime Minister maliki did until 2009, and after 2009 he became more dictatorial than a nationalist. More dictatorial. What did you not like about him . You thought he was great in 2006, thought he was the shia nationalist, the Arab Nationalist to bring that country together. By 2009 you had turned on him, why . Well, in 2006 and 2007 Prime Minister maliki moved aggressively to crush al qaeda, and then in 2008 in the famous charge of the knights operation in basrahi touched muqtada al sa sadrs position with his soldiers. He did what he should have done until 2008. Unfortunately by 2009 after president obama was elected and vowed to extract the United States from iraq very quickly, maliki sensed that vacuum and began to ifily it and he did so by hijacking the organs of the iraqi state and replacing hem with his own party and inner circle. You say you warned the Obama Administration that you saw bad things coming from Prime Minister maliki. What did you want the Obama Administration to do about it . Well, now i think its very important for the United States first to be realistic with the situation on the ground. We have to admit that, frankly, we allowed ourselves to be strategically defeated in iraq, when we backed maliki was a second term in 2010. Then we have to acknowledge the fact that iraq is now an iranian vessel, an iranian ally, which is actively supporting the genocide in syria, which is feeding into a broader regional holy war, and then what we need to do is freeze all american cooperation with the Iraqi Government until Prime Minister maliki steps down, and until the iraqi political leaders are able to form a National Unity government that fairly represents all iraqis, because if we continue to sell baghdad f16s, apaches and hellfire missiles, all thats going to do is feed into the regional holy war which will devastate American Industries and probably lead to another 9 11. You occupy an interesting place in this debate. Essentially youre saying the u. S. Should have turned on maliki sooner, didnt do enough against maliki sooner. What could the United States have done . He was more or less elected in the end. He, through parliamentary maneuvers got himself a second term as Prime Minister. Obama with the status of forces agreement didnt want to leave u. S. Troops there, saying Prime Minister, if youre going to be so hard, if youre going to make this so difficult youre on your own, pal. Its actually a common misperception that maliki was elected into office. In fact he was not. He lost the 2010 elections to a more secular, moderate prowestern Iraqi Coalition led by former president allawi, known as iraqiya. We sat back and actively watched as the iranian government formed malikis cabinet in iran in september 2010, and thats when i urged Vice President biden and other senior white house officials that we need to do something about this to make sure that iraq does not become an iranian client state. Unfortunately, the white house refused to do so, and thats now why were facing this tragic situation in iraq. Very dangerous situation for the United States and its regional allies. Dangerous for the entire world right now as everyones watching this. In closing, do you want to see the u. S. Do more or less in iraq . Do you want to see more u. S. Advisers on the ground . Do you want to see more u. S. , the u. S. Trying to put its thumb pressure on what goes on in that country or do you think the u. S. Needs to pull back right now . Maliki is still very much in power there. Its not an issue of more or less. Its an issue of doing the right things. What we need to do is again acknowledge and identify who our real friends are across the middle east are and who are our real enemies and rather than encouraging iranian intervention in iraq and rather than continuing to arm Prime Minister maliki with advanced american hard wire as he welcomes syrian and iranian air strikes inside iraqi territory, we need to freeze our cooperation with the iraqis until Prime Minister maliki and other leaders are able to form a unity government that brings together all iraqis, because thats the only way you can ever restore security and stability to iraq is through a political solution. There are absolutely no military options to resolving this insurgency, as indeed the United States military learned throughout the iraqi civil war from 2004 until 2007 when general petraeus succeeded in restoring order through the surge because that was a Political Campaign primarily. The Political Campaign doesnt seem to be going well as the parliament wont meet together again for another month. Ali khedery, thank you for being with us. Appreciate the discussion. Thank you for having me. Donald sterling could take the witness stand today at a hearing which will determine if his wife, shelley, is legally allowed to sell the loss ang less clippers in a record 2 billion sale. Federal court kicked the legal battle back to the state level monday and proceedings began immediately, and boy, did they get interesting fast. Robin with the Los Angeles Times joins us. The question of which court and get past that quickly. Donald sterling wanted this to stay in a federal court. Was that more than just a delaying tactic . No, i actually think it was a delaying tactic because what he was trying to get a federal judge to say was that his medical privacy rights which are federal privacy rights had been violated but the federal judge said basically we dont handle these kinds of probate cases in this court and the Probate Court is well able to handle those issues so he kicked it back to Probate Court yesterday, thats when the proceedings began. Donald sterling lost that one and the proceedings began and they began fast, with lawyers for shelley sterling saying we want Donald Sterling on the stand. Whats going on there . Well, i think there was a little bit of drama in the courtroom. I mean obviously they knew Donald Sterling wasnt in the court, so when her lawyer stood up and said id like to call as my first witness Donald Sterling and turned with a fleurish to look at the door, there was no Donald Sterling, so that sort of gave off the dramatic impression that the man was absent, you know, and this is the whole issue in this case, his mental presence or absence. Lets talk about that, because that is what is at issue here, the mental state he is in, particularly after this interview on cnn with anderson cooper. Thats a big part of it. Is he mentally fit . Because in the ownership documents for this team between shelley and Donald Sterling, if one of them is not mentally fit deemed so by a doctor, control of the team goes to the other. Thats the issue here. Thats right, and he says he is mentally fit, and shelley sterling has brought two experts in. The circumstances of her bringing them in is what Donald Sterling is disputing. He says there was fraud and that he was misled by these two people who came in and declared him slightly mentally incapacitated. So i think both sides agree that there is some slight cognitive impairment, but Donald Sterling is arguing that hes not that impaired and shelley is arguing that you are impaired enough to be removed from the trust, leaving me in charge of the clippers fate. You make a key point there, hes arguing hes not that impaired but hes also arguing that he was somehow tricked in to these examinations. Explain that. Well, i mean, both sides agreed that theyre not going to make his mental condition the issue in this courtroom proceeding. So he is arguing, as is his only avenue i think to fight this thing, that he was tricked by his wife, who brought two experts in to his home to do tests. He claims he was tricked into a ct scan, a p. E. T. Scan, some verbal testing and some conversation, and is saying now that he did not realize what the ultimate goal of that testing was. So he feels betrayed and in some ways this has taken a very sad twist in this case. This is a guy who, whatever else you think of him, has been betrayed a number of times as weve gone down the line. Its kind of sad but seems like its marching toward a pretty inevitable conclusion. And that conclusion is . The sale of the clippers, i would say. I mean weve got until july 15th as the sort of first fake deadline and then ultimately i think september 15th is the drop dead deadline. I think the probate case or the probate judge is working in an expedited fashion so well have an answer long before september. You know, whatever does happen, hell end up with a lot of money, though, because this team, if it is sold, will sell for 2 billion. As you said, robin, it is interesting, this guy who has not engendered a lot of sympathy over the last several months for justifiable reasons, many are saying is this old guy being treated fairly. That is the weirdest twist in the case i think. Robin, appreciate the discussion this morning. Thank you. Next up for us on new day, hollywood recovering from a fourth of july with no fireworks at all. How was it turned into a blackbuster bust . son oh no. Can you fix it, dad . The Holiday Weekend brings in all sorts of people for blockbuster movies. This year only 130 million compared to last year 230 million, making it one of the weakest fourth of julys in at least a decade. Joining us brain stelter well call him, brian stelter, host of reliable source. He called it a dreadful july 4th box office it was. It was down 45 from the same time, same week last year and it was enough to drag down the whole average for the whole year so far. This year compared to 2013 box office in the country is down 4 . So this is probably a temporary blip. Its because none of the movies are actually worth seeing. But it was a pretty dramatic drop. But that makes a big difference. It helps having good movies. I did my part. What . What did you see . How to train your dragon 2. I went to my annual trip to the movies with my boys. There was nothing else there. Not a darned thing to see. A tweet says i actively want to go to a movie but theres nothing on im the least bit interested in. Werent the studios blaming the world cup as well. Great weather across the country, so many excuses. By the way there was a hurricane going up the east coast last weekend that would have maybe kept people indoors going to see movies. These are all excuses. The reasons are these movies are stinkers and its good that the box office is down because hopefully that means people are voting. People are voting with their dollar. Hold on a second. Are they excuses or is this a real thing. For example it was on a, fourth of july was on a friday, taking one of the days people typically go to see movie, date night, et cetera, on friday night. Their box office would be hit by that. Is that not a real isnt it. There is some truth to that and there are some larger trends that the industry has to grapple with. One is the fact its Getting Better to watch movies from the couch. Thats what i was wondering. I find myself renting the films still in theaters. Also building out rent movies still in theater for 10, 15 or 20. Better snacks, seating and company. Especially at michaels place. Four or five people around the couch is worth paying 20 for that movie at home. What were supposed to be the big summer hits . I feel i dont know what the big movies were the summer were supposed to be. Fast and fewer us 7 would be one of them. Unfortunately paul walkers death caused that film to be postpo postponed. It will premiere later. The studios arent worried about the slump. They think about 2015 and 2016, they have films scheduled for the summer two years from now. Star wars. Lots off sequels coming. Theyre willing to take the hit . I think they are willing in this moment to take the hit. Theyd like to have deliver us from evil or earth to echo be a big hit. Tammy, mo offies that are bad good, goodbad but some movies you cant rescue. It still made 33 million over the weekend. Only cost 20 to make it. Everyone says this is the golden age of television, all the great art and performances are happening on the small screen. Is it harder for the studios to make good films . Id like to say its easier. Id like to say the Technology Makes it easier than ever, just last night i saw one of my favorite movies of the year so far, called boyhood filmed over 12 years and cost only 5 million to make. It shows a boy grow up from age 6 to 18 so the technology is there to make it easier to make these incredible events happen in theater. Should we say goodbye to those Big Box Office record weekends of the past . Generally low expectations . I dont think so. Last summer was the biggest mystery. Can you remind me, what was the big hit last summer . I cant remember. Theres one this summer. Despicable me 2. There isnt a movie people can see again and again, theres one that brings other people to see other films as well. You need a couple of those each summer. Thats whats missing this summer, the home runs. Theres been some singles and doubles but no big home runs. This is what we call the brain summer. Brain stelter. In a letter, obama adviser Valerie Jarrett writes the president would welcome the chance to talk to perry. It also invites perry to a meeting with a group of faith leaders in dallas. President obama will be in texas tomorrow for a series of fundraisers. Earlier, perry refused to greet the president at the airport, a somewhat customary gesture saying it would be, in his words nothing more than a tarmac handshake that doesnt address immigration. President obama still has no plans to visit the u. S. mexico border during his visit. Thats a decision criticized by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle
